hi i saw ur post about sm and the graduation system and i’m kinda new to kpop and kpop companies, i was wondering if u could explain what the graduation system is?

Hi! Uhm Okay, please bare with me 'coz I don't know where to start or how to explain this properly but I'll try lol

Let's start with history, shall we?

So a graduation system is basically a group concept made by SM Entertainment a music label/entertainment company where SJ, SNSD, SHINEE, F(X), NCT, EXO, TVXQ, RED VELVET, BOA & others are housed. So as per my knowledge, the 'Graduation System' was first applied or given to Super Junior when they debuted in 2005 making their debut album titled as 'Super Junior '05'. Meaning, the 12-member original lineup back then will be reorganized (idk if that's the proper term) based on their performance making the members work hard or do their best if they want to be part of the next lineup for Super Junior '06. It's like competing with your own members. So basically, every year or every comeback, there's a different or a new set of members. On the following year (2006), they added another member which was Kyuhyun making SJ a 13-member group, the largest pop group in history so far at that time. There were backlash when Kyuhyun was added. Fans (ELF) were worried and threatened about the instability of the group and the uncertainty of the concept that they have. Fans were worried about the members' future after going through intense training for yearsss so basically they didn't like it. And then in 2007, SM introduced another new member featuring which was Henry in SJ's 'Don't Don' comeback. Backlash continued. SM didn't expect that SJ's first and original lineup would appeal to the public like that, afterall, SJ was known to be 'TVXQ's leftovers'... damn writing this hurts... After all the backlash that SM received, they never tried adding anymore members into SJ and cancelled the 'graduation system'. They made Henry and ZhouMi (both are Chinese) members of Super Junior - M (SJ's sub-unit based and marketed in China) instead. Yes, just a member of the sub-unit, not the main group. If you still don't know since you're new to KPop, SJ was the first group to ever venture into sub-units. Considering they have large number of members, SM saw this opportunity to utilize their artists. It's like value adding. The first sub-unit in KPop was Super Junior - K.R.Y, a ballad sub-unit composed of SJ's main vocalists: Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, & Yesung. So yeah, the graduation/rotational system failed with SJ. They remained as a 13-member group since then (15-members actually including sub-unit members Henry & ZhouMi) Basically, SJ was a lab rat for SM, an experimental group. They gave the graduation system to them and tested the sub-unit thing as trial and error.

Fast forward to 2012, SM debuted EXO with 12 members as a whole divided into 2 sub-units which were EXO - M (Mandarin; based in China) and EXO - K (Korea) with 6 members each. There were no graduation system in EXO although they are an improved version of the sub-unit concept given, tried and tested first by SJ. SM would like to think that they left the errors they encountered with SJ's sub-unit system and then apply the 'improved' version of it to EXO. Did it also fail? You tell me. I'm seriously hoping that history won't repeat itself on WayV. Once you get deeper into Kpop especially into SM groups, you'll see eventually the connection, trend, similarites and differences between SJ, EXO & NCT (SM's largest groups) and also their Chinese sub-units, Super Junior - M, EXO - M, and WayV respectively and realize how SM worked around this concept of graduation/rotational system and infinite members and infinite possibilities that they gave NCT.

Fast forward to 2016, NCT debuted with its first sub-unit NCT U which has this rotational concept. Apparently, in NCT's case, rotational system and graduation was made separate and different. Any member in NCT regardless of what fixed unit they belong to could debut and release a song & MV as a member of NCT U depending on whoever fits the song. It could be a duo, a solo, a trio, or indefinite number of members.

SM would like to think that they left the errors they encountered with SJ's graduation system and then apply the 'improved' version of it to NCT Dream. NCT Dream debuted in 2016 with the original lineup of 7 members composed of Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, & Jisung. They were literally just 14 - 18 years old (Korean age) back then, teenagers. And the graduation system that SM gave them was that when they reach the age of adulthood which is 20y.o in Korea, they have to 'graduate' or leave the group and re-debut separately into another fixed unit which is based in another country's city ('coz SM was planning to conquer the world through music somehow lol). So after reaching the age of 20, these kids who literally grew up together as childhood friends are bound to be separated. Mark turned 20y.o in 2018 and graduated by the end of the same year. The members threw him a Kamsa (Thank You) Party which is like a send-off party around Christmas time of 2018. He was no longer part of NCT Dream's activity or comebacks after that nor seen together with the other NCT Dream's members unless it's a full group (NCT as whole) activity. So in 2019, 00liners Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, & Jaemin turned 20y.o and were expected to graduate from the sub-unit at the end of the year just like Mark. But SM announced concert tour schedules for NCT Dream on November of 2019. Til 2020 came and Chenle also turned 20y.o and SM never mentioned anything about the graduation. Not until today April 14, 2020 where they finally broke their silence and announced that NCT Dream's graduation system is abolished and will adopt NCT U's rotational system instead making NCT Dream a fixed unit. I know this might cause confusion later on especially for new NCTzens so I'm gonna clear it up here now. NCT U's rotational system includes everyone in NCT and give them opportunity to collaborate and release a song regardless of the sub-unit they belong to. While NCT Dream's rotational system is only exclusive to NCT Dream's 7 members: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, & Jisung.

SM isn't really good at taking back whatever they've started, they'll see to it that at some point, they'll still be able to push through their original plan. That's why I said on my previous post that they've 'compromised'. They didn't give in to our demands, they've 'compromised' thinking that this is the 'best' they could give us given the situation.

Other people say it's no big deal, they're still in the same group just not in the same sub-unit. Or they're just separated in sub-units, it doesn't mean they're no longer friends which is all true. But if it's just something that light of a thing to deal with, it wouldn't affect the members so much. SJ have mentioned in some ocassions before that the graduation/rotational system they had during debut was extremely hard on them because even if they didn't want to, the concept made them look at their members, their friends as rivals. It made them compete with each other. The managers kinda pressured them into thinking that way, the company made them feel that way. They were still budding into adulthood back then, around 18- 22y.o. They were struggling because their concept gave them so much uncertainty. Imagine joining the company at a young age aspiring to debut as an artist so you could put food on the table for your family (because most of SJ members came from poor families) so you went through years of intense training and then to debut in a group where your future isn't assured. While for NCT Dream, since they are childhood friends, some of them have said on ocassions before (specifically Jaemin & Jisung) that aside from their members, they don't have friends. Because they've dedicated their childhood in intense training. They didn't have the time to mingle with other kids in school because right after classes, they'd go straight to training so the only friends they know and have are their members. Think that all those years they were building that relationship together, while SM were planning to separate them from each other when they turn 20. SM even made Jeno, Haechan & Jaemin drop out of high school just a few months before their high school graduation to focus on NCT Dream's graduation. Think about how they were robbed of that opportunity. I specially/personally feel bad about knowing how Jeno enjoys school and excels in academics. Think about how hard they cried during their first ever concert The Dream Show thinking that it might be their first and last concert together because even themselves don't know what SM plans to do with them after graduation. That's what the 'graduation system' does to young group of people. Although the concept is not all bad, but it's not nice to play with other people's emotions like that. That's why no one wants it.

So yeah, that concludes my explanation. Sorry if it's kinda information overload. I think, while writing, it became more of a vent/rant more than explaining. 😅

Taeyeon was born in Seoul, South Korea and lived there until age 5, when her mother passed away from cardiac arrest, moving away to America (more specifically, Los Angeles) with her father, who was a neurologist, and her younger brother

During the time she was in Korea, she was childhood friends with G-Dragon of Bigbang, but they lost contact after she moved

Taeyeon wanted to be a criminal profiler during her childhood

She had her first relationship was when she was sixteen, with a girl the same age as her named Yeon Hyunjung, who eventually broke up with her after about a year

(i) She featured in Bigbang’s Let’s Not Fall In Love MV as GD’s love interest; many people commented that their acting and chemistry were extremely natural, to the point where the dating rumors that had died down started again

(ii) She composed, wrote, and produced the title song for Super Junior’s Mamacita album, Mamacita, as well as the side tracks of the album: Hit Me Up, Islands, and Evanesce

This is why Taeyeon makes sure to clarify that she and the other members gathered together to work, although they love each other after so long together – therefore, internal or personal disagreements have no place interfering with or threatening their continued existence as a group

What complements and softens her strictness and natural exigence, however, the members and others around her say, is that she’s “warm-hearted” and takes good care of everyone that she works with; also, the results of her attention to detail are almost always very good, making the payoff worthwhile

Taeyeon is an excellent cook

oh yeah, just so you all remember, all your faves are able to do what they can today because of super junior. Remember when zhoumi and Henry were supposed to be officially a part of the main team but fans were so fucked up they bought stocks and forced the company to put them as suju m members instead? Remember when hangeng was in a time before foreigners were allowed on TV so he had to wear masks on stage and basically pioneered the way for your favorite Chinese/Japanese/etc idols to join kpop groups? Subunits, large groups, so many integral parts of kpop are because of super junior so I really wish that people sort of. Understood that. You don't have to like them, but I just hope y'all respect them for what they did, especially what the Chinese members had to sacrifice for your foreign faves to be able to perform as they do right now.

It's a beautiful thing. Althought I don't condone what Kangin have done, if SM and the other members believe in him, I think ELFs should give him a chance.

But honestlly, I think we are forgeting someone. Zhoumi!

#ELFWantOT12 should be trending. Even of only13 did what they did back then, we shouldn't perpetuate what they did.

Because whoever ever prevented Henry and Zhoumi to join back then weren't in their right mind. Can you imagine how cruel it was for the two men? They even lived with the other in the dorms! Their place was with the other, in the main group!

It's too late for Henry sadly ( and it's a sad thing really), but not for Zhoumi (yet). Mimi is always adorable and present for the other members, he even went to see Yesung in Japan recently! He worked as hard as the other members and got horrible things said too him and acceptance from ELFs, SM and a place in SuJu is long overdue for him.

I doubt its still possible honestly but I think we should make it know that we think it should be that way. Mimi needs support.

And even of you are not a fan of him , I swear to tweet or try that tag. Mimi is an adorable sunshine, a funny diva, he sings SO FREAKING WELL. He' s a great MC and seems to have great friendships with Siwon, Kyu, Hyuk. And even Yesung with who he shared dorms back then.

And Chul, he tooks care of him when Chul was injured! He still follow Min on Insta ♡

Ahh welcome to the Kyu cult stans club! he’s adorable I love him so much

anyway! since I covered the basics in my last post, I’ll be jumping straight into the members I didn’t discuss last time.

Past Members:

Kibum (Kim Kibum)

he doesn’t even look like the same person i’m-

Kibum was a part of the original SuJu lineup in 2005 as a vocalist. In 2006 he began acting, and slowly began focusing on his solo career more and more. He was completely absent from “Sorry, Sorry” promotions and “Bonamana” as well. He left SM and SuJu officially in 2015. He’s in Attack of the Pin Up Boys (a movie starring all 12 of the original SuJu members) as the narrator. He’s a good actor and he’s been in a movie and a drama with my wife Go Ara, so you know he’s got some talent. I personally don’t keep up with him much, so there’s not much I can offer on terms of his personality.

Hangeng/Hankyung (Han Geng)

He was the original leader of Super Junior-M until his departure in 2009. He left after filing a lawsuit claiming SM’s 13 year exclusive contracts were unfair, and also revealed that SM had refused to give him a day off in over two years, resulting in health issues. Hangeng won, but SM filed a appeal and later Hangeng and SM reached ‘mutual agreement’. He was also Heechul’s best friend and he’s a huge sweetheart, please listen to his solo stuff! He hasn’t put out music in three years now, but he has such a nice, calming voice

Super Junior-M Members:

Zhoumi (Zhou Mi)

This precious baby, my SON, is Zhoumi. I know I said before I wouldn’t talk about main or lead positions, but Zhoumi is the main vocalist of Super Junior-M and his voice is so goooooooood. He just dropped a new MV and honestly I love him so much, his solo stuff is amazing, I want to squish him He’s so close with his members and it honestly fuels me in life. He’s also the only fully Chinese member in Super Junior-M.

Henry (Henry Lau)

I honestly debated putting him here or in past members, since Henry left SM in April of 2018 and effectively left Super Junior-M. The maknae of Super Junior-M, Henry is also a undercover comedian in his own right. He’s got so many funny moment compilations I don’t know where to begin. He’s also close friends with Mark Lee from NCT. Henry is honestly one of the funniest idols I’ve ever witnessed, and his solo music is full of bops. He’s also an amazing violinist and is even the “mysterious violinist” in SuJu’s “Don’t Don” MV! Stan talent, stan Henry Lau

Members on Hiatus:

Kangin (Kim Youngwoon)

The “dad” of SuJu, he’s been on hiatus since 2016, when he committed his second DUI (the first being in 2009). He’s also had the police called on him and some say he assaulted his girlfriend, but the official report says the woman did not press charges and it was simply an argument.

He loves his members, and he’s truly a great singer (pls give him more lines when he comes back). He’s amazing and I hope he learns his lesson and is able to return to the group soon.

Sungmin (Lee Sungmin)

The cutest not-makne around! Sungmin has been on hiatus since 2015, when he got married. When SuJu announced their plans to return, ELFs protested again his presence in the group and he issued an apology and said he wouldn’t be joining SuJu when PLAY came out. if y’all pull the same shit again i will hunt you down and throw hands. He’s honestly just so cute, this gif is ruining me as we speak

Kyuhyun (Cho Kyuhyun)

oh boy. oh no. you guys opened the floodgates. a whole can of loving kyuhyun is ready to be served. i spent forever even just looking for a gif for this

Kyuhyun, the forever maknae of SuJu. I’m pretty sure he has the voice of a Greek god, and you can quote me on that. He’s incredibly dorky and sweet and just??? His smile owns my entire heart. He is the softest man alive and his hair is so fluffy! I love it!!! He’s so cute! and evil His hiatus is set to end May 24th, 2019, when he returns from military service. He’s also earned himself the title of “ballad king”. He’s called “vicious tongue”, but he loves his members and hopefully his return from the military will convince SM to bring OT11 back together again.

As sad as I am that a chankaisoo subunit isn’t likely to come out of this, (This isn’t from anything I’ve heard, I’ve just been weighing odds and I’m doubtful.) I am kind of curious if a prediction of mine could come to pass:

Kai and Sehun have alluded to ‘solo’ music in the past year, so perhaps it’s a Chanhunkai (Is that the name??) unit, but on the album each member will have a solo track?

This is purely speculative, of course. I’m still unfamiliar with a lot of practices in entertainment companies. I’m also basing these predictions on the assumption that there won’t be member overlap in the subunits. I know that’s common in the big groups, i.e. SuJu and NCT, but comparatively EXO is a small group now. And as much as we miss OT9, it’s probably going to be staying at 8 members for a while. This also isn’t taking into account the possibility of new members being placed in the subunits without being part of the main group, i.e. Henry and Zhoumi of Super Junior-M.

Henry’s already branching out into other things he’s always wanted to do, and I’m so proud and sad at the same time! This brings up so many emotions as a String and ELF and a Forever15....

I’ve been a String and ELF since Henry’s debut. It was actually Super Junior M that I first discovered on Show Luo’s variety program. I liked him, because he played the violin like I did and I thought he was charming. It was only later that I realized he was (but not really, let’s face it) part of a much bigger group and was in the middle of so much hatred and prejudice.

What makes me the saddest is thinking how long he suffered under not just SM’s restrictions, but at how hateful certain ELF were toward him and Zhou Mi. It was their reaction to Henry joining Super Junior that caused this whole isolation from the group. And yes, look into it: in the very very beginning, he was originally meant to join the main group, but “fans” opposed it so hatefully, SM had to back-track and say he would be part of a sub-group. They were so hateful, even Leeteuk, the leader of the group, showing support and love for Henry was ignored, and even sparked controversy. On Radio Idol’s True Colors, Heechul spoke with ZhouMI about how helpless he felt as a hyung having to stand by quietly and watch what was happening to Henry and ZhouMI, and feeling like the best he could do was be good to them. ZhouMi cried in this episode thinking back on it. If you’ve followed Heechul for as long as I have, you’ll know he always had a soft spot for people who were unjustifiably mistreated.

Well, I guess ONLY13 should be pleased with themselves.

Now that Henry’s no longer a part of the group that zealous faction of “fans” can officially die, as they no longer serve a purpose. Hopefully ZhouMI will follow suit shortly, if he’ll just do himself the favor and let his contract run out. I say this because Henry and ZhouMi will remain close to the members they are already close with, whatever fans think: Heechul and Hangeng were seen in pictures together as recently as 2015 -- SEVEN YEARS after he left Super Junior due to mistreatment by management and SM Ent.

Whew. Okay. Got that out of my system.

I hope we can all move foreword in this, and I hope Henry (and ZhouMi) will thrive and flourish and to all the things he’s always wanted to do and couldn’t.

I hope this for quite a few SM Idols who have shown signs of feeling stifled and helpless and creatively strangled. I want them all to thrive and do everything they’ve always wanted to do.

Of course Super Junior aren’t going to speak on it any time soon: they’re still in SM, after all. All of that will have to come with the passing of time, and we can only wait. Who knows. Maybe now that Henry is out of the group, they can support him openly for Christsake!

Yes, it’s for the best, yes, Henry will be free to do the things he wants, and maybe the other members will finally have the chance to talk about him without getting back-lash for it, but this is a huge chunk of my younger days that’s kind of been shattered.

I don’t know if I’m the only one who is as upset and happy at the same time, but I haven’t really adjusted yet.

Lowkey still hoping for Henry and Zhoumi to be announced officially as part of the main SJ group. They freakin deserve it yo. I was bored so I checked out label sj's ig and saw that the account doesn't follow them and that breaks my heart. They're following every member with an ig account and sm only... its sad to see how cautious they have to be until now.

I do include Zhou Mi! I’ll also include Han Geng but won’t mark him as Super Junior, but I can’t include Kibum because I don’t know him at all. Henry I’ll pass on.

About Sungmin and the division among ELFs

There’s been a lot of anti-Sungmin sentiment lately and I for one had no idea why there was hate for him to begin with. “Are K-ELF angry bc their bias got married??” I think that’s the most common reaction among I-ELF but that of course isn’t it. What bothers me the most is the divide between Korean & International ELF tbh. Each side calling the other stupid/ignorant bc “they don’t get it but they think they know everything” is very unfair. BOTH sides need understanding. Do research, try to hear what the other side is saying rather than judging them based on a couple of angry/hateful comments.

I did. I looked up posts from K-ELF on “reasons why Sungmin will never regain Korean fans” and read them. And you know what? I GAINED UNDERSTANDING. I finally get why K-ELF feel betrayed. But you know what else? I ultimately still support Sungmin (just FYI he’s not even my bias in SuJu so don’t go there).

I agree that the timing for his wedding was extremely poor especially considering what had happened with Leeteuk’s family & also the SS6 tour & the album promotion period. It was a selfish move to push on with the wedding. It just was. Also, him using bodyguards during fanmeetings to basically bully fans from bringing up the topic- very wrong. And denying the rumors to Korean fans but admitting it to others- also not cool. Plus, forcing his then gf’s nickname onto others via his new signature was kinda lame.

Even though I sympathize with K-ELF on those points, I still choose to support Sungmin & his wife bc at the end of the day, I feel like it was just a really unfortunate confluence of events, bad timing & yes, a tablespoon of selfishness (really like a cup if we’re keeping to cooking ratios but you get the point). They wanted to get married on the one year anniversary of their first meeting and he didn’t want to put it off bc he was enlisting 3 months later. They really wanted to be married. I can’t hate on him/them for that. Yes, it came at the expense of a couple of things- namely the inconvenience of his group but I don’t believe that means he doesn’t care about Suju anymore. He made a choice for himself and his love and put it ahead of the group. Priorities change in life, but again, it doesn’t signify that he has stopped caring about the members or the fans.

But- and I really want to emphasize this point- if the guys can move on from it, why shouldn’t we as fans? I’m not saying they’re all over it- it may well remain a sore point within the group- but to go so far as to assume that they want him out is going too far. By going against Sungmin and his participation with the comeback later this year, you are hurting the group as a whole. Losing Hangeng & Kibum was hard enough at the time, but now you expect them to expel him from the group almost 12 years into this thing (plus Kangin but that’s another topic for another day)? No. I also want to add that my main contention with the anti-Sungmin K-ELF and really with ALL fans in the world who feel like he/they/ANY idols owe their career to them (the fans). I disagree. Fan support is crucial & necessary but to say that “THEY OWE US” is going over the top imo. Just as the idols aren’t entitled to any fan support, we as fans are not entitled to access into the idols’ lives.

For the sake of full disclosure, I think most I-ELF are miffed by K-ELF, not just because of this mess but also from the Henry-ZhouMi disaster from way back when. They were not welcomed (to put it very politely) and found support from the international fans. It still breaks my heart to hear them talk about how they were THIS close to quitting bc of the backlash against them joining. Hell, to this day, a number of ELF still don’t acknowledge them as a part of Super Junior. As Heechul once said, “if you can’t support all 15 members, then what kind of ELF are you?”
