Spell Basics: Prep Work and Cleansing
Spells need to be prepared properly in order for them to work, so to keep negative and interfering energies away and allowing a comfortable and safe approach to casting. This section will cover some of the basic methods; as long as you understand the principle behind how each one works; it should be very easy to adapt them into your practice. It may be beneficial for you to learn relaxing techniques such as meditation.
Warding: It’s vital to protect yourself during spells and so warding allows you to put up a barrier from everything else; this doesn't just have to be for spells though; it can be used to protect the home, yourself on a daily basis, even to protect your tools.
If you have a wand you can use this, or just used your outstretched finger to mark out the amount of space you need for your spell. This is where your barrier will go.
If you are someone who struggles with visualizing, you can mark out points or lay something down like a blanket onto the floor to represent your barrier.
You could turn on the spot, or move along the edge of the perimeter you want protecting; use written incantations if that helps.
You want to imagine that barrier forming; it can take any form you want; it’s more effective if it feels comforting to you. As it forms, you need to believe it’s going to protect you.
When you are happy with the barrier, you can relax your body.
Grounding: An important step in making sure that you are not carrying huge amounts of excess energy before or after a spell; a way of balancing energy. If you ever feel dizzy, have a headache or feel drained after a spell, this is because your energy wasn’t properly balanced.
A common method of grounding is to focus your energy into the ground, a tree or an object. You need to be fully relaxed and focused.
Lay your palms firm and flat against your chosen surface and allow the energy to flow from your fingertips and into that surface.
If you can visualize it happening, this will help. You want to imagine some kind of force flowing through you.
Charging: This is fueling energy from yourself or another object of energy into the objects you wish to work with. To charge something, it can be done in advance; this is usually the popular choice since it allows time for energy to flow. You can leave objects with associated crystals, under the moon or sun or even in water (be careful not to leave anything that can be damaged or cause damaged in sunlight, water, etc.)
There are many methods of charging; as long as you have an energy source that works for you.
The idea is that the energy from your chosen source will flow into the object you need
You can use yourself, by holding onto the object and focusing your energy into it, with the full focus of your intention.
Again, visualization or incantation can help with this. Once you feel it’s ready, you can use it.
Intention: This is the one ingredient you will need no matter what spells or rituals you partake in. It is important for you to always focus on your spell's intentions no matter what.
Always be specific in what you want though, otherwise your spell will either not work or will have affects you did not ask for.
Use visual aids such as physical objects or chants to help you if you struggle with concentrating and visualization.
Cleansing: You need to be able to clear up your space and tools before and after spells.
You can cleanse using smoke, candles, even just do a full physical cleanse of the space by dusting, sweeping, etc.
Make sure to use intention once again to be sure that you are cleansing the area or tool thoroughly, since you want to get rid of all the unneeded energy.
Visualizing the energy being swept away is also extremely helpful, or you can mimic the motion; like using a broom to sweep it away.

Spells and Spell Writing Intro
Spells can be done in a whole manner of ways; from a simple word to a full ritual under the moon. But spells do not have to be complicated or take hours to complete.
A good spell has to be done with care, and so finding your preferred methods and ingredients can take some effort and time. It is recommended that you have a large space to work with; moving furniture or finding a quiet space outdoors are recommended.
The best time to try a spell is when you need it.
A glamour is great for getting ready for an interview, A jar might serve better for the long term such as reducing anxiety. It is dependent on whether you need it sooner or if it is something that will take effect later on.
Consider that when you want to try a spell out. It's also good to note that if you are using a pr- written spell that you read it thoroughly and note how long it may take; in many cases, you would need to prepare in advance.
Think about what you plan to use and if you need any substitutions. For example, if it asks for a chalice, look for a regular cup. On that note, looking at spells that were published in older books may contain some wording or phrasing you might not be familiar with; look at the spell’s intention and do a little research on the materials and method; look at substituting where possible; it’s important to stay safe, so if you don’t feel comfortable with something, adjust it accordingly.
If in doubt, simplify. You want to make sure before you start doing any spells that you are in a comfortable position and that you are feeling focused, relaxed, and have everything you need set out in front of you.
Your Grimoire or spellbook can be open and ready if you need to refer to it.

Witchcraft Safety
While Witchcraft may not be a dangerous practice, it can open up a lot of risks and hazards which must be taken into account into order to practice effectively. Simple mistakes can lead to terrible consequences, with some that can in fact be fatal and so it is important to know what to do when handling certain tools or equipment.
Knives, sharp tools;
If your Athame or blade is being used as a prop, then it is best to use a replica. This could be a carved or sculpted representation.
If you are using the blade for practical purpose, be sure to store it in a sheath if it has one, or keep it stored somewhere safe such as the kitchen or in designated storage where you know it is safe and out of reach.
Avoid leaving any sharp tools on altars or exposed where they could be a danger to you or others.
Candles and flames;
Do not leave any candle or lit objects unattended.
Keep flames separated from each other with as much distance between as possible.
Do not keep flames close to the edge of tables or near anything flammable including altar cloths, clothing or curtains.
Keep candles and anything you are burning in a heat proof dish where appropriate.
Put out everything properly when finished with.
Potions and similar;
Potions should be labelled with ingredients as well as whether they are ingestible or not. For example, crystal water may become toxic to ingest, so be sure to research and label.
Alcohol and other substances should be handled with care and minors should avoid using any substances that are alcoholic.
Do not ingest unless you are 100% sure of the contents.
Crystal Balls and similar;
It is best to avoid keeping crystal balls near sources of sunlight and other strong light. The reason for this is as light passes through, it causes the ball to concentrate a small ray which can cause house fires. Keeping crystal balls covered with cloth is the best way to avoid this if your altar or working space is close to sunlight.
Alternatively keep your crystal ball in a drawer or box where possible.
Plants, flowers, fungus;
It is highly recommended that you only use what you are familiar with; plants you have grown or bought yourself.
If you plan to forage for any of your ingredients, again only go for what you are familiar with, and be sure to do thorough research into how to forage properly and respectfully.
It is worth having someone with experience in foraging to accompany you; so, you could go on an organized trip with a group.
Researching plants should be done using official and trusted identification guides, local to your area.
If you come across a local plant or fungus that has a poisonous lookalike, for example, field mushrooms have a species very closely resembling them known as the Death Cap, it is best to avoid taking any, unless you have confirmation from an expert to do so.
Do not practice any herbal medicines unless you have done relevant training first. Always have the supervision of an experienced herbalist when doing any type of herbal medicine.
Essential Oils;
They can pose a serious risk to pets, children, and can affect pregnancies, it is best to avoid if possible.
Make sure you are aware of exactly what you are using.
Oils are best to be avoided if you are someone who has any respiratory issue.
When using oils, be sure to dilute them accordingly with carrier oils and be sure to do thorough research beforehand.
Do not ingest oils.
Crystals;
Be sure to know exactly what you have, and find out whether it is water soluble, toxic in certain scenarios, etc.
In the case of water solubility, Witches use crystals to enchant water and make potions, in some cases they may ingest. It is best to avoid doing this, and rather have the crystal in a separate chamber from the water if you plan to do the same.
If you own crystals that are potentially toxic when ingested or touched by hands that are then touching food or going near the mouth, it is recommended you wash your hands thoroughly after making contact.
Mental and physical Health;
Be sure to consider how you feel when you choose to cast any spell; if you are lacking energy to carry it out either mentally or physically then it is best to hold off, or at the very least consider adjusting your approach.
When you are not 100% ready to carry out a spell, you may be likely to misjudge your process; You want to be able to protect yourself and balance your energies well so you do not end up drained, nauseous or suffering from headaches, etc. handling tools and ingredients will carry a higher risk of causing injury.
Rest as much as possible.
If you are someone who struggles daily, consider adapting your practice to be more comfortable for you.

What is Magick?
What is Magick?
It is a practice.
It is a practice of magic. It is the art of harmonizing with the energies of the universe. It is an understanding of the Earth and everything beyond, no matter how much or how little we use. It’s a practice that has been relied upon for thousands of years; people focused their knowledge and understanding of local fauna, folklore, and beliefs to produce medicines and spells that would benefit themselves and those who were willing to ask for them. To this day, Witchcraft has seen many changes, adapting to the modern age and paving the way for new and more accessible ways to practice. Although we may have different intentions and desires, the heart and soul of Witchcraft remains the same within all of us.
It does not follow a straight path.
There is not one single way to practice; you may want to continue the traditions of Witchcraft within your culture, or you may go down a different route altogether; perhaps there is a family grown practice you wish to honor, or you just feel drawn to something that brings out something undiscovered within you; no matter what you choose, they are all valid. Witches can create whatever they wish from what is available to them; they are resourceful and considerate, and so the variety of Witches becomes infinite.
It is explored and practiced by many cultures.
Many cultures around the world have their own unique way of practicing Witchcraft; steeped in history and folklore, it’s what shapes the various types of practice that have been built and protected for thousands of years. An example of this diversity is the practice of Hoodoo; originating in Africa, it has no strict form of practice.
It is a gender-neutral term.
Although Witchcraft has been seen and stereotyped over the years as a female-oriented practice, it has never truly been that way. It is open to all genders and its term "Witch" is used by all; it is an identity that gives us all power and strength, and it helps us find each other, no matter where we sit on the gender spectrum.
The K in Magick
The reason for the “K” is simply for aesthetic reasons. It was added to the end to differentiate it from that of commercial magic. The “K” is completely optional.
Magick vs. Mundane
Magick is definitely not a cure-all, and even though there are herbal remedies available to help aid the relief of certain ailments, it is always best to seek professional help for both physical and mental illnesses. See magick as a way of complimenting mundane medicines; use magic to help make things easier but do not substitute it completely. It is also important to understand that herbal remedies should be handled carefully, and are best done by an experienced herbalist. Always make sure you know exactly what you’re using and how you’re using it.

Connecting With Trees
A great way of connecting with the element of earth, or even another form of grounding or meditation, is to connect to a tree. Here’s how:
Find a large tree and sit down with your back against its spine. (You can also climb the tree and sit with your back against it in it’s branches)
Close your eyes and feel the tree’s solid strength as you rest against it.
Breathe in and out in a relaxed manner. As you do, visualize the energy of the tree being absorbed into your body. Breathe in and out thirteen times, each time taking in some of the tree’s energy until your whole body is enveloped. Feel yourself becoming part of the tree.
Call to the tree’s spirit, commune with it, and settle into the feeling of being a tree. Rest in this state for as long as desired.
When you wish to return to normal, bid farewell to the tree’s spirit and breathe in and out thirteen times, this time releasing the energy of the tree. Open your eyes.
Notes:
If for any reason, you feel uncomfortable or “rejected” by the tree, simply disconnect from its energy, apologize for intruding, and leave the area. It doesn’t happen very often, but it’s possible.
For more advanced witches, this exercise could be evolved to include transplanting your consciousness into the tree.
If you’re going to do a magical working that conducts energy through a tree (e.g. drawing energy down through a tree, using a tree to symbolize the element of earth in a circle, etc.), it’s polite to use the exercise here with the tree, and when you feel a connection, ask the tree’s permission to participate in the magical working. Aside from being polite, this also help’s align the tree’s energy flow with the rite’s, starting things off in the correct manner.

Finding Your Spirit Guides
Your spirit guides are very powerful entities that have been watching over you and are ever-present in your life even if you do not have a relationship with them yet. These beings are specifically connected to you because you chose each other before you were even born into this incarnation. Everyone has a spirit guide and a guardian angel. Finding them, and learning how to interact, and communicate with them can greatly improve every single facet of your life through the simple act of their presence. Some people may find it hard to find their spirit guides, others will find it very easy, it all depends on if you are ready to know them, or not. There are many ways to go about finding your spirit guides if you are ready to go searching for them. Any of these methods am about to share with you can help you find them, but it is also important to use your insight, and introspection to verify your experiences.
Things that can help you find your spirit guides:
Just knowing that they exist:
Just the act of simply acknowledging that they exist will allow you to start building a connection with them. You will start to see their influences in the world, and all of the things that they do for you, that you might not have been previously aware of. Allowing for you to meet them, and to get to know them not through a direct meeting, but through their actions in your life.
Asking them to appear, and to be ever-present:
This will show them that you are ready to have them in your life. Just like the previous method, it will open you up to experience what they do in your life already. After you ask them to be more present in your life, you should look out for signs of them acting in your life.
Meditation:
Through the act of meditation, one can find their spirit guides by using their spiritual senses to perceive them. To do this all you will really need to do is enter a meditative state, open your third eye, and call to them. They should come to you and show you their presence, and once they do you guys can begin your communication, and learning of each other. This meeting is most likely going to happen in your sacred space or astral temple and is going to rely heavily on your sixth sense’s ability to pick up spiritual constructs.
Divination:
Divination can be a very useful tool when trying to communicate with anything so why not your Spirit guides. All you need to do is get some form of divination method of your choice and ask your spirit guides to answer through it. Then simply begin asking questions to it as normal, and they will answer through the act of your divination tools. This will allow you to communicate with them, and get to know them better. This is a very good method, especially when you can not get into a meditative state, or when you do not have a complete grasp of using your sixth sense abilities.
Dream:
If you know how to lucid dream, you can always call out for them in your dreams and they will appear to you there. If you cannot lucid dream, you can always ask your spirit guides to appear to you in your dreams before you go to bed, and they may come to you and your dreams. That’s all there really is to it.
Astral projection:
Astral projection can be quite helpful when trying to communicate with any entity this also includes your spirit guides. all you have to do is astral projecting and you will be able to find your spirit guides on the astral plane and communicate with them.

Breaking Curses
Evaluate
The first step in curse-breaking should always be a thorough evaluation of your situation. Ask yourself the following questions.
Do you know for certain that you’ve been cursed?
If not, what makes you suspect that you’ve been cursed?
If yes, do you know who cursed you? The more information you can gather on who cursed you, how they did it and why the better off you’ll be.
What kinds of effects is the curse having? Is it affecting only you or are others also experiencing the effects?
These questions can help you determine the best plan when trying to break a curse. The more you know about the curse itself the more you can tailor your solution to it. It’s also important at the point to make sure that you’ve really been cursed. Could it just be bad luck or poor decision-making? Is there someone who would actually want to curse you? The following steps won’t help you much if your problem isn’t caused by a curse so always make sure you’re addressing the real cause of a problem!
Spell Reflection When trying to break any curse I always try spell reflecting first. Reflecting spells is a method of sending the magic back to the caster, leaving your life curse-free. This can be a very effective method BUT it doesn’t work on every curse. If you’re dealing with an experienced spell caster they may have included safeguards to prevent the magic from rebounding on them. It’s a good idea to evaluate in the days after trying your spell reflection to determine whether it worked or if you need to move on to the next step.
If your spell reflection does work then skip down to After You’ve Broken the Curse
More on Spell Reflection here.
Simple Spell Breakers
There are many ways to break curses and some of them are fairly quick rituals. Try one or two of these to see if the curse will lift easily.
Let a source of living water carry it away. Take yourself to a natural source of water like a river, lake, or ocean and get in.
Burn a bay leaf at dawn and again at sunset. Allow the smoke to waft over you and when the leaves have finished smoldering scatter them in the wind.
Use selenite to cleanse your energy field and break the hold that the curse has on you
Take a bath with Epsom salt and hex breaking herbs (bay leaves, fennel, jasmine, and nettles are all common choices)
Clean your house with water infused with hex breaking herbs. Mop the floors, clean the walls, wash the doors and windows, and when you’re finished throw the mop water out the back door.
Brute Force
If the curse won’t be reflected and it’s resisting simpler methods of curse breaking it’s time to just break it with the Brute Force Curse Breaker.
After You’ve Broken the Curse
Once the curse has been broken you’ll need to do some magickal housekeeping to remove any lingering energy or effects. The first step is to thoroughly cleanse yourself, your home, and anyone else who has been affected by the curse. Set upwards and protective enchantments around yourself and your home to block future curses. These measures should be regularly updated and refreshed as long as you are in a situation that may incite another curse.
If The Curse Doesn’t Break
If you can’t break the curse it’s due to one of two reasons.
You were never cursed in the first place.
People don’t evaluate the situation properly and assume they’ve been cursed when in reality it’s just life nipping at them a little harder than usual.  Pull yourself together and try to find the root source of your problems, have you made some bad decisions? Are you neglecting responsibilities? Figure out what’s actually going on and FIX IT!
You’ve cursed yourself
This is less likely but not entirely unheard of. Often when bad things start happening people will jump to conclusions and assume they’ve been cursed but then they spend so much time worrying and freaking out about it that they actually end up cursing themselves with all of that gross nervous energy. The solution to this one is to just cut it out! Relax. Take a chill pill. As soon as you can stop giving the curse all of your attention and energy it will disappear!
If you’ve got confirmation that you’ve been cursed and have tried all of the methods I’ve outlined here and you STILL can’t get rid of a curse then it’s time to consult with someone who has more experience in these matters.

Spellwork: Brute Force Curse Breaker
This spell is simply an example of one that can be used, there are many out there and you can and should pick and tailor a spell to most closely fit what you know about the curse.
Tools and Materials
Air Drying Clay
Water charged with the sun’s energies (preferably at noon)
A slip of paper and a pen (red ink is preferable)
Bay leaf
Black candle
Fire-safe container
A tool for writing in clay
Hammer
Process
Cleanse yourself and your workspace thoroughly and anoint yourself with solar water. Light the candle.  Write down on your slip of paper all of the effects that the curse has had on you, be thorough and specific. When you have everything written down, fold the bay leaf into the paper and set it on fire, allow it to burn completely to ashes in the fire-safe container.
When the ashes are finished smoldering set them aside. Take a small portion of clay (enough to create a talisman that will be easy to carry but not so small that you cannot inscribe it) and anoint it with a drop of solar water. Mix the ashes into the clay thoroughly. Roll the clay into a ball and flatten it into a disc, be sure not to make it too thin. On one side, inscribe the words: “No more befouled, again unbound, again unbidden”
On the other side inscribe a symbol to represent the curse, this can be a sigil but it can also just be a simple doodle. Close your ritual space, blow out the candle and let the talisman dry according to the directions provided.
When the talisman is completely dry take it outside early one morning and allow it to sit in the sun until noon. The talisman is now finished, carry it with you everywhere you go and it will absorb the energy from the curse, preventing it from affecting you. On the next new moon take the talisman and smash it, rendering the curse that it has absorbed useless and broken. Dispose of the shards outside of your home.
Notes
This should be performed at night for maximum impact. The best moon correspondence for the intent would be new or waning.

Spellwork: Spell Reflecting
This method can be far simpler than trying to break a spell! Working with the momentum of the magic takes far less energy than trying to stop that momentum altogether.
Tools and Ingredients
A small mirror
A black or white candle
Black pepper
Oregano
Anointing oil
Process
Begin by anointing your candle and rolling it in the pepper and oregano. Place the candle in a holder on top of the mirror. Light the candle and as you do so say the following incantation:
“Return to your maker, and leave me in peace. Should the way be barred, Your power will cease.”
This incantation ensures that even if the caster has protected against spell rebound the curse will still be broken. Allow the candle to burn itself out and dispose of the remains outside of your home.
Cleanse yourself and your home immediately.

Enchantment: Backfire
This is an enchantment that rebounds a curse thrown at you, throws it back twice as hard at the person who cursed you, and ensures that it doesn’t come back to you.
Tools and Ingredients
Some accessory you always wear
A bowl
Rosemary
A black candle
Black salt
Full moon water
Process
Lay a circle of black salt around your bowl.
Put your candle behind the bowl in the circle and light it.
Place your accessory in the bowl.
Pour the moon water over it the accessory.
Stir the water clockwise with the rosemary and say/think “With this enchantment every curse thrown at me will be bounced back to the sender twice as hard as it was thrown and does not come back to me.” as many times as you wish.
Blow out your candle, dry off your accessory, and wear it.
To recharge hold and say/think “Curses on me backfire on to the sender.”
Notes and Modifications
For items damaged by water, you could use sea salt in the bowl or smoke cleanse in the candle.
Even just having a steaming hot bowl of water with bowled Rosemary and Sage or some other purifying herbs might be a good idea.
If you really need something quick and dirty, burn a bay leaf to break the curse and hold the item over the smoke.

Three Keys of Magick
The Keys of Magick are a core principle shared by many different schools. While they may seem simple, the truth is that they can be challenging to master. Dedicate time to honing these foundational skills, and you’re sure to see results in your craft.
Relaxation
It’s difficult to concentrate when you’re not comfortable. Minimizing distractions and developing an ability to focus through them will be essential. I’ve repeatedly insisted that meditation is the number one skill any witch or magician needs to master. This is one of the many reasons why. The importance of mental control seems like a no-brainer, but I’m always surprised by how often people neglect their meditation.
To begin, find a quiet and comfortable place to work where you are unlikely to be interrupted. Ground yourself, and clear your mind. Gradually allow all the tension to leave your body. From this empty, neutral position, begin to focus your will on your work.
As you gain experience, you should train by increasing your level of distraction. Practice relaxation and focus in places that aren’t ideal, so that you’re equipped to do even better. Cultivating your skills here will allow you to successfully work magic in less and less ideal situations, giving you an edge and the discipline necessary to be successful when it truly matters.
Visualization/Concentration
During your ritual, adopt a single minded focus. It’s not enough to express your desire, you need to see the thing you want as though it’s already come to pass. Instead of “I want a promotion at work”, think “I have been promoted”. See yourself receiving the promotion, feel the joy and satisfaction of your new role. Bask in your boss’ praise. To help make the thing real, try to engage all your senses. Imagine the way the place smells, what it tastes like, how it feels. What’s the quality of the light? What’s the soundscape like?
You must truly cement the thing as real in your mind. This key goes back to the Principle of Correspondence, if you’ve ever studied Hermetics. Even if you haven’t, you’re probably familiar with the phrase “as above, so below”. The continuation of that is, “as within, so without”. Make the thing real inside of you, so that in the next step it can become real outside of you. Take the time to sink into it. The solidness of this visualization will directly relate to the strength of the outcome.
Projection
This is easily the most difficult of the keys to master. In order for your magic to do any work, you first have to send it out into the world. All that energy, focus and desire you built up during your ritual needs to be released. For this to happen, you’ll have to relinquish all attachment to your spell, along with any desire for a result.
To help with this, keep a journal of my workings. Following each ritual, record what you’ve done in a dedicated book, along with any details you consider significant. Depending on your craft, those details may include things like the moon phase and the position of certain stars, or they could be the entities you worked with and any offerings given. Make a point of recording significant occurrences, such as candles that wouldn’t light, strange sounds, or a personal mistake (these happen). Transferring the memory from yourself into the book is a symbolic activity that will help you detach from it.
Try not to return to that writing for three months. At that point, review the ritual and assess its effectiveness. If you discover that it did not have the desired effect, chalk it up as a learning experience and look at why it didn’t pan out how you wanted.
