I’m not engaging with the Penny stuff yet, and probably won’t until at least v9 when we know more, but one thing I am deeply emotionally fucked up about:

That one shot of Jaune in the reflection of his sword.

It’s the first time we’ve ever really….seen Crocea Mors portrayed as a deadly weapon.

It always has this fairly matte, unintimidating air when it’s animated. I don’t think we’ve actually seen it even reflect the light in any significant manner before. And that’s saying something, because it’s been eight volumes now!

The others have serious weapons. You can NEVER underestimate Crescent Rose of course, but like. We’ve seen Myrtenaster and Gambol Shroud catch the light before. We’ve seen Ember Celica flash. Magnhild, Milo, Stormflower, they’ve all had significant shots that come easily to mind where they have a sharp, metallic glint that sends the message that this is a weapon, an edge, an instrument of destruction.

Whereas Jaune’s weapons, from the very beginning, aren’t really portrayed as….dangerous. I mean, we see him use them in very significant ways, he fights with them, but there’s a storybook quality to it. White armor, a light grey sword, as he battles Grimm and the like. We don’t see reflections in the metal, we’re barely reminded that it’s metal at all, it has this harmless rounded finish…

And then THAT shot.

And then suddenly, we see it as a weapon for the first time. And, visibly, so does Jaune.

Suddenly, jarringly, Crocea Mors is a steel broadsword.

A weapon. A threat. Something sharp, and dangerous, and ugly. Something capable of taking a life.

It's about how Blake pleading for Ruby to get up because "we need you" is what has Ruby forcing herself to get up mere seconds after a full aura break

It's about how you can see the split second of exhaustion before Ruby turns and smiles because Blake is safe and everything is ok, don't worry

It's about how fucking pissed off she was when the Hound tried to take Penny away and she didn't even need to center herself before using her eyes
