I’m four weeks into my second semester of grad school, and so far, it seems like it is going to be more complicated than anything I saw last semester. I enjoy the classes I’m in, with the minor exception that the Classical Electromagnetism professor is a little bonkers, and the course feels kind of chaotic.

My teaching responsibilities are pretty much identical to last semester, but I don't have to work with the professor who overworked us and was rude all semester. Instead of holding office hours 9 hours/week I only have to hold them 3 hours/week which makes a big difference.

I am registered to start researching on top of everything, which I am happy about, but it's a little bittersweet. I want to dedicate myself to learning and engaging with research fully, but my classes have to come first. I like quantum 2 and Statistica Mechanics a lot, and the material is building a relevant foundation for my future work. The only trouble is that I'm spending a lot longer on the homework compared to last semester. It makes sense because some of the material is more advanced, but I posted syndrome and the pressure to get good grades continues to eat away at my soul.

The little bit that I have done with my research has been highly motivating. I even gave a presentation on an article during our group meeting! I also got trained on the High Resolution-X -Ray Diffeaction apparatus which satisfied my *i need to do lab things in a lab instead of working problems and derivations for hours* itch.

I already have an exam later this week so the next few days are going to be heavy studying/homework days. Doing my best to pace myself and keep my head above water.

Note Taking Styles Part 1

𝐐𝐎𝐓𝐃: What is you hardest subject in school?

𝟏. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥: structural note taking often looks like a skeleton where you have a title, headings/subheadings, then notes. For most of my revision notes, I use structural note taking so I can easily locate a certain heading without having to look around too much.

→ 𝙿𝚛𝚘𝚜: • Good for quick notes • Makes revision simpler and efficient • Good for quick and neat notes

→ 𝙲𝚘𝚗𝚜: • Not necessarily as detailed • Isn’t meant to answer specific questions–it’s just notes (unlike Cornell)

𝟐. 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐥: cornell notes are probably my all time favorite; I use them for concept heavy subjects like chemistry and math. There’s a section for specific key words/vocabulary/questions you answer, a section for notes, as well as a section for a summary. I’ve done variations in the placement of the summary box (you can keep it at the end of the notes or at the end of the page–I prefer the page but that’s just me :)

→ 𝙿𝚛𝚘𝚜: • Can be extremely detailed • Summaries prove very useful during revision • Perfect for retaining a ton of information • Keeps you engaged during note taking

→ 𝙲𝚘𝚗𝚜: • Can be messy if the formatting isn’t paid attention to • Is slightly difficult to use for relatively easier topics (in my opinion)

Just remember that these are my opinions and things I’ve picked up from my own (or my friends’) experiences. Not all of this needs to apply to you and these are simply facts/opinions from my perspective. (i.e: don’t come after me if you disagree with something 😋)

𝐀𝐎𝐓𝐃: My hardest subjects are debatable between Chemistry Honors and World Lit. I’m a ‘native’ English speaker and literally, I don’t understand what my English teacher wants from me however, for chem honors, my teacher doesn’t “teach” anything—which my English teacher does in a sense. So I’m probably going to say tie between those two haha

How to Organize/Plan Your New School Year

Today’s blog post is going to teach you how to organize and plan for a new school year.

Materials Needed:

Piece of paper or document/note. (You can do this on any note taking app or document creator app).

Pen or pencil (if using paper).

Let’s Start!

Start out by writing down some information that is important. (Student ID Number, Grade, Counselor, Locker Number and Combo, School Name, Principal and Assistant Principal(s), Your Email Address for School, and Your Password(s) for school)

Write out your class schedule.

Make a school supplies list, this would include new school shoes and clothes.

Figure out the supplies you need for each class.

Make a list of tips for the school year.

Make daily routines.
