Productive Day 1/100

today was superr productive! i wasn't expecting to be super motivated, actually.

this morning, i started a daily habit of meditating. then, sorted out my goals for the rest of the year by revamping my notion page. i'm very proud of it so far, but it's not done yet. i read some pages off of daniel howell's you will get through this night, too. it helped me recall some things i learned in therapy.

i took a little nap this afternoon, so i didn't get to do notes for my majors in advance. maybe tomorrow.

A mother's word for word transcription of the imaginary phone call her four-year-old made to Santa Claus in 1911.

Through some outrageous case of serendipity I found a recording of another phone call this same child made 60 years later. Though I have to say his choice of conversational partner is a definite downgrade from the first call.

#I've started using 'our bees are all dead' as my standard filler during lulls in conversation #and no I am not kidding #that is actually 64 year old George Arthur Lincoln in the recording #I'm writing up a bio of him that will hopefully be up within a few days #because this kid grew up to be involved in Forrest Gump levels of 20th century historical events #he was the youngest american general in wwii and was involved in the strategy of d-day and the planned invasion of Japan #he was at yalta and potsdam #he started a social sciences department at West Point #which resulted in his students being called commies because why should soldiers study culture and economics instead of shoot gun at thing #he ended up as the director of the office of emergency preparedness while nixon was president - hence the phone call #this poor man had to sit through so many meetings with Henry Kissinger #his younger brother (Waunce from the letter) was also a general #they were known as 'big abe' and 'little abe'

there are valid reasons to have an antagonistic relationship to academic scholarship, but those reasons are overwhelmingly not raised in graduate classrooms, where students instead bitch about theory in general, jargon in general, making them sound ultimately like conservatives, who view any attempt to systematically account for social phenomena as a form of useless intellectual degeneracy

Aren’t you just a little bit embarrassed? #this is a vague about my graduate cohort lol don’t mind me #I have increasingly little patience for grad students who refuse to engage with anything even slightly abstract or dense #you are literally in a social science graduate program. That is like one of the primary tasks you need to do in grad school #If you want to engage with it for the purposes of critique that is completely acceptable #but seeing a word you don’t know and immediately quitting and dismissing it as useless nonsense is not going to get you very far #we have to read Capital for our comps lol. what are you gonna do then

Okay genuine question that feels stupid to ask at this point in my life: how do you study with your notes? Because I’m currently having to blast through writing notes and I know I will not retain anything right now.

I don’t know if it’s ADHD or what, but I also get bored with a lot of the study methods I’ve heard of. Like flashcards, highlighting, etc. It just feels like I learn it again for 5 minutes and the information is then gone from my brain.

What could I do to help study for quizzes/tests? And if this helps, it’s mostly for my intro to sociology class. Studying Spanish is a lot easier, but sociology feels harder to apply to my life since with Spanish I could watch a Spanish show or listen to music in Spanish.

hey!! i still can't believe that i'm motivated enough to spend the last days of my holiday break studying and studying. i guess that's just what university does to you, haha. ^^;

today's study session was on readings of philippine history. it's not exactly one of my majors, but i definitely think i'd struggle with juggling this alongside my other courses— so why not just get along with it? :PP

i also found it very helpful to incorporate guided meditations before the session, during my breaks, and afterwards. i think everyone should try it!
