Hold The Fort
Part of our Colorado family flew in for a riotous weekend of fun and connecting. Beck, at five, isn’t accustomed to being surrounded by literal cousins by the dozens, so it’s been a learning curve for him of living in the loud and intense. He’s done an amazing job of adapting. Part of the fun is getting used to how his cousins play, what entertains them and gets their imaginations whirring.…

Why Gather?
There are many reasons why groups of people gather. For families, it’s holiday celebrations, reunions, tripping over cousins, and gabbing with grandparents. With companies, it’s meetings, conferences, brainstorming sessions, and fun employee interactions. When family merges with company, gatherings tend to be more intimate and honest. Confrontations can be uncomfortable but can draw people into…

There's Wisdom In Waiting
Rain had been threatening most of the day, and as the temperature dropped, the wind picked up. The wedding ceremony was planned for an outdoor venue, covered by a roof with the sides open to all of surrounding nature. As the bride walked down the aisle, her veil blew around her, like a cloud framing her beauty. Those watching shivered in the wind, but the bride and groom were focused only on…

Dip And Dye
Decision making is an arduous process–for some. I have a daughter who is very quick and decisive. She’s aware of the big picture, and when choices need to be made, she rapidly assesses the situation and lands on a solution. I, on the other hand, hesitate when making decisions. I love my options, so choosing among the many is a challenge. Especially if I consider that more options may soon…

When A Cat Attacks
photo courtesy of Andrea Morales on Unsplash It was before dawn, and I was enjoying some alone time in the silence of our home. John was still asleep, and we had no one staying with us. I heard a ruckus on our back porch. Because it was still dark, my mind immediately went to the worst possible scenario–someone was trying to break in. As my heart settled down to a normal rate, I realized it…

Walk--Talk--Eat--Repeat
Having just returned from a week in Spain meeting with people and attending a wedding, I’m feeling more than a little out of my element coming back to busyness, hurrying, texting, and quickly shared words as we move from one thing to another. The pace in Europe was a little slower, but just as much was accomplished. It was done in a way that felt kinder, gentler, more people-focused. More…

I'm All In
We met the family when the twins were ten-years-old. They were here in the States for three months for a needed break from work. When we picked them up at the airport, Lydia, the daughter, was the only one who spoke English. The others were more comfortable with their mother tongue, Spanish. We’ve gotten to know the family well over the years, and Lydia has stayed with us several times when her…

Start Small; Finish Big
It began in 1882. On March 19 of that year, a cornerstone was laid for a small church in Barcelona, Spain that, having begun with a diminutive footprint, has become the largest unfinished church in the world. The Basilica Sagrada Familia. It was begun by architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, and it was meant to be a small church dedicated to Saint Joseph. Villar resigned after a year of…

Heart Of Hospitality
We’ve been blessed with having thirteen college students stay with us during their spring break, courtesy of our two oldest grands. They’ve come from the cold climes of northern Indiana, so a little Florida sun was a gift. People who find out about our decision are a bit amazed. Why would we choose to do something like that? It sounds a bit preposterous. Where did we put them? How do we feed…

Death By Any Other Name
Over two hundred years ago, after our Constitution was ratified, Benjamin Franklin wrote in a letter to a friend in France, “Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency, but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” He’s not the originator of the phrase; the progenitor was Christopher Bullock in his book, “The Cobbler of…

The Royal "We"
Being thoughtful and compassionate in the role of grandparents, we’re continually on the lookout for intriguing surprises for the littles who have increasingly populated our lives. John is particularly gifted at this; he finds funky, flashy things that make noise and twirl insistently, colorful creations made of plastic and fun, and unusual delightful distractions guaranteed to hold a child’s…

My Room Means My Rules
She’s not quite eight-years-old, but she has thoughts, opinions, and convictions that would rival someone three times her age. Our daughter and her family living in northern Virginia reworked their home to offer their daughter a room of her own. Having shared a bedroom with her little brother due to limited space was a necessity. But Sloane’s parents worked their magic–giving up office space for…

Searching For An Ark
Growing up in the Midwest, it was quite normal to have major snowfalls in March and April. I can remember year after year of cute Easter dresses needing to be covered up with heavy coats because of a spring snowfall. Living in Florida, that’s never an option. Global warming would have to do serious work to create snow around the Orlando area. At any time of year. Our daughter in Denver,…

The Bearded Shepherd
Spanish moss hangs from our beautiful tree, bearding it like an old man, making it appear wise and gracious with age. I don’t like the moss. It doesn’t really kill the tree, or so I’m told. It’s not parasitic but an epiphyte that absorbs nutrients and water through its own leaves. It may slow down growth because of its thickness, but it’s not a deadly plant. Right. I love this tree. It’s been…

Trading Passion For Glory
There are those who love to dance. There are others who are made for it. While in Pennsylvania, we had opportunities to watch our grands do a variety of things. Kicking soccer balls, playing video games, racing each other. And dancing. Especially the two youngest, Scout and Mack. They can break down the moves to most upbeat songs. One of their favorites is “Eye Of The Tiger”, by Survivor.…

These Boots Were Made For Walking
What began as a delightful part of a Halloween costume–one tough little cowboy–has become the only pair of shoes Scout will wear. “I need my boots!” It doesn’t matter the temperature or even the comfort level. The boots are a given. I have friends from Texas–of course–whose footwear of choice is always boots. I’ve been told they wear them in till they feel like part of their feet once you put…

I Don't Like To Lose!
Four boys, ages two to nine. Each highly competitive. All having a longing to win. Brothers. Six-year-old Mack’s comment said it all: “I don’t like to lose!” We’ve had the joy of being in Pennsylvania taking care of four very active, very endearing grands who are cut from the same mold–winning is wonderful. Losing, not so much. Everything is a competition, from the Nintendo Switch to getting…
