A mockup for that silhouette woman done in Procreate. - After playing around for a number of hours, I realized that my initial plan for the piece to be focused on patterns would just not work, given my current skill level. Or possibly at all. So it became more about contrasting values. Having that one strip to see the tone of the paper behind line patterns creates a much more interesting visual than just a block of the same thing. Concept of a traditional piece. - Her appearance was supposed to reflect an African aesthetic, but somehow, she ended up looking like a South East Asian Lady Macbeth. Not what I was going for, but I like it. - She was also supposed to look at though she were touching her head in pain, like she has a headache or something. I’ll have to adjust that in the final piece. - Wanted to try experimenting with making her face and hands black and affected by lighting but her clothing being flat and all about the patterns. It’s more landscape than portrait, unlike the last silhouette woman, but I wanted the subject have a bit more balance, thus the hand and the pearls. A very, very angry man. Swipe to see him blissfully happy, crushed and broken, and shocked beyond belief. My favorite’s the happy one. It makes ME happy. - Keeping in with my exploration of this more expressive, Don Bluth-inspired style, I wanted to explore a handful of emotions and push them as far as I could make them go. - God, I love noses. They are the centerpiece to the face and can impart so much character to a… character. Not just in the sense of “Oh, he has a long nose, so he must be snooty or nosy or whatever.” Not something that says anything about the character’s personality itself necessarily but something that speaks to the tone of the world, the style, how everyone emotes. Plus, an interesting nose, like the beak this man has here, adds such interest to a silhouette. Not everyone can have dinky little dot noses. - It suddenly occurs to me that I made the nose “smile” with the smiling version, and I could have made his nose droop with the sad one. Been a bit tired of drawing manga-inspired pictures over the past few months (has it been months…?), so I decided to have some fun with art much closer to the style I usually produce more naturally. Granted, I took a lot of inspiration from Don Bluth and the style he and his group of creatives, but the visuals are far more in line with the kinds of imagery I’m used to producing. - The simple farmer is my favorite. That double fang boy has the largest eyebrow-to-face ratio in existence, I’m sure of it. - The flats of the lemon cake card for Ahoy Hoy! I was initially concerned about how that circular slice would turn out, but it came out alright. It’s pretty good. The key is to keep in mind that the segments, while uniform in a sense, are organic in nature, so a bit of wobble is appreciated. Plus, they’re packed in together. If a segment bulges out on one side, it’ll push the pith or whatever on that side, which may in turn push IN its neighboring segment. Not every time exactly the same way, or else that uniformity will take over. But it helps. - Or just look at photo reference. A more refined value base than what I had the other day, this time for the lemon cake card for Ahoy Hoy! It was harder and easier than I thought it was going to be. Harder because I didn’t anticipate all the things that would be interacting with each other. Easier because a thing like this all kind of falls into place once you decide you’re in it for the duration. - It also helps to have photo ref. It’s not just for the structural design of things. Color and value can be discerned from them as well. You’d think the inside of lemons, that being the segments, would be brighter than the rinds. Me too. Nope. They are darker. You might also imagine a lemon cake as… I dunno, how WOULD you picture it? Somehow, the golden brown in medium values missed me entirely until it occurred to me to look it up. They were originally supposed to be lighter in complexion, but with so many lighter elements involved, it made more sense to make them dark. - Yes, I’m aware that the “value before the colors” thing is not always the most useful pro strat on the planet, but it helps me (personally) visualize how everything works. And as I type this, I realize I forgot to change the backdrop. A quick Procreate value treatment for a How Are You? card for Ahoy Hoy! Swipe for the plain lines. - Just realized this could potentially look slightly ominous… It’s not supposed to. The idea is that you’re lying down and she’s leaning into frame to say hello. - Some values may be changed to make her look more interesting. Actually, as I say this, I’m thinking I’ll make her uniform dark blue with red and white accents as opposed to white. That’d take the values down quite a bit. In fact, the trees are probably going to be cherry or magnolia trees, so they’d be a pastel pink or lavender respectively. Even lighter values. Might EEEEEVEN make her hair black-brown as opposed just brown. - The main focus of these values was to get a good handle early on regarding what the light was doing. I’ve had issues with things not turning out the way I expected as far as color and light go.
