short story
We’ve been walking for hours now and the only thing I can think about is how thirsty I am.
My lips are so dry they split in several points.
I keep repeating myself we need to walk just a little bit more to reach the safe zone, but there’s only desert for miles here.
In the end my knees give out, a stabbing pain runs through my body when they hit the ground.
A part of me wants to stand up really bad, because it’s my only chance to survive, but the other side just wants to rest.
Nick is by my side in a second, he’s much better than me in bearing pain. He put an arm around my waist and lifts me up. I can see the great effort it takes him, but I can’t seem to focus anymore.
I tell myself to do something, to stay awake, for him, because he’s always been there for me, I can’t leave him now.
Then I hear it.
More painful than being stabbed, the cruel sound of on incoming helicopter.
“We need to go Belle” he tries to drag me, using the last of his strength, but he soon cave in.
This time we both fall down, in each other’s arms. He looks me in the eye and I can still see hope in him. I told myself so many Tims that I wold have given my life for him, so that is exactly what I do.
I kiss him, slowly because I know it’s the last time I’m ever going to see him, and while I do that, I use my powers to hide him from the soldiers that are coming.
The helicopter lands less than a mile from us and a few soldiers get down. The noise is deafening, but I can still hear the voices getting closer.
“I am so sorry” I whisper, he probably can’t hear me. I close my eyes using every drop of strength I have left to make him fall asleep. When I open my eyes again, he’s unconscious, I whisper a quick goodbye and turn to face the men.
I can hear their voices clearly now: “… a woman. Seems to be unarmed. Approach with caution, could be an Hybrid.”
I menage to stand up, driven by adrenaline, if they think I’m dangerous they’re priority will be to take me to they’re bosses and Nick will be safe. They approach, pointing they’re weapons in my direction, «great», I think to myself, «I’m one of the most powerful creatures on this planet, and I’m going down because of a stupid gun».
Before they can do anything I raise my hand and fire consumes two of them. The other ones are not intimidated and they start to shoot. I try to manipulate air in order to create a shield from, but I’m to weak at this point. I fall on my knees once again and, in that moment, a bullet hits me. The pain leaves me breathless, I fall back, hitting the head on the ground, finally losing consciousness.
I turn to look at Nick one last time, he seems so relaxed and peaceful. The soldiers did’n see him, that’s the only thing that matters now. I can still hear the two men I hit screaming in pain, and I can’t help to thing it’s a good way to die: fighting and saving the life of the man I love.
I close my eyes, everything is black.
