He had duties to fulfill, he didn’t have time nor the inclination to watch, what was it, the planet’s sun rise over the distant mountain range. “Yes, Sir.” Fell into parade rest and pretended to not notice the General’s hands shaking. It wasn’t his place. Good soldiers follow orders.

you often rec fics, do you have any codywan fics that you consider hidden gems/underappreciated?

Oh!! Immediately, I think of germinate by @alderaani, and its companion piece mycorrhiza. They're short (less than 2k together), but they explore loss and grief and connection so perfectly, so powerfully, in that short space. They're about love in war, they're about things that endure!! I have so much love for these little fics, and I can't recommend them enough!

I also thought of A Figurative Sense by @elwenyere. Intimacy and eroticism unmatched tbh. I know this author's longfic is extremely popular, but listen to me. Read this one. It's only 1200 words, but 🤌 it's like good chocolate. Let it sit, let it melt on your tongue a little bit. It's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. The last line takes me out every time.

Tbh I really appreciate this ask! I think it's easy for beautiful little oneshots to get buried over time on AO3, and it’s no one’s fault, but I do think it’s a shame sometimes! These fics seem so skillfully and lovingly crafted, and are such a delight to read, and I'm glad you gave me a chance to ramble about them.

Thank you for the ask dear 💙 This is in fact one I haven't talked about yet :D I've barely started it but the baseline is Dogma being so anxious that he can't sleep and Tup climbing into the bunk with him to cuddle. And then Fives comes along and tells Tup to lie on top of Dogma like a weighted blanket <3 (am I projecting my own issues onto Dogma? perhaps). Just some mild hurt/comfort really!

Lil snippet:

Tup finally gives in to his most primal urges and gets horizontal, too, curling up against Dogma’s back and rubbing his cheek against the nape of his friend’s neck because Dogma has the softest skin in the entire company, maybe even the entire GAR. Dogma jumps but doesn’t wiggle away, and Tup takes that as a win. Chin pressed against Dogma’s shoulder, he asks, “C’mon, Dogma. Tell me what’s wrong.” Dogma exhales. It’s a long and shaky sound, and as soon as it fades it’s followed by a torrent of words. “I can’t sleep. It’s- Everything’s so- I can’t sleep, and I’m tired, but I can’t sleep. My insides feel so weird, like-” Dogma turns so suddenly he almost knocks Tup’s teeth out with his shoulder, but then he’s looking at Tup, finally looking, and his eyes are red-rimmed and puffy and his drawn face makes him look like a first generation clone even though he’s barely a fifth. Tup reaches out, hand sliding around the back of Dogma’s neck, and pulls their foreheads to rest against each other.

So, know you're gonna keep on (haunting) is actually one of the ones that probably has it's final title + the name of the song it's written to (haunting by halsey), and it is also a force ghost fic!

I have actually tried to summarize it like five times now and haha turns out it's really hard to summarize it without spoiling it wholly, but it does feature baby-wan, force ghost qui-gon, and a whole lot of misunderstandings from a whole lot of people, plus the sharp end of the grandfather paradox.

it's very much more in the vein of paths we used to roam than uh... not...in that vein. vibes wise, I mean. not so much plot wise, but def vibes wise.

3. On a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy incorporating romance into the average story?

Oooh I answered this one. About a 7! Incorporating romance seamlessly and joyfully is a skill I’m still learning and practicing.

17. What is your favorite line you’ve ever written?

Oh…oh this is a hard one. Wow< this is a hard one! So hard to choose… Some contenders:

“I loved him. I killed him. I miss him every day.” 

“Hope, however small, can be a terrible thing.”

“Magic, like plants—like love—withers when unwatered.”

And maybe this is more than a line, but I always loved this description: “He wants to walk these twisting sand with Kenobi for long enough to watch the suns rise and set and rise and set again. He wants to know if enough time in this unforgiving desert could bleach his black armor back to the white he barely remembers any more.”

I’m sure I’m missing my real favorite, goodness… ah well, I’ll remember something next time.

91. How has your writing style changed over the years?

HAHA well it’s gotten better, that’s for sure!! When I first started writing, I was reading so much Tolkien and Jacques that everything was description, then I started reading YA and my writing was 90% quippy dialogue, so my style is at least much better paced between the two (I hope). I hope my language is less trite, my metaphors less overused, and my characters more distinct. I think I’m getting better at killing extraneous stuff, stuff that doesn’t advance the plot or world or characters. I’m also working hard at including more/better observations from characters: what are they seeing? what’s the world like? how is that affecting the mood/ambience? How is what they’re feeling affecting what they’re seeing? that sort of thing!

Plenty left to work on, though! Plenty left to improve!

9. what's your writing process like?

Umm. For multi-chapter fics I try to write bullet-point chapter outlines but as I mostly write one shots I usually just...sit down and write when inspiration strikes or I have a prompt that sparks something.

If I can, I write chronologically but I also work a lot with placeholders and then write later parts of a story if I'm stuck at a certain point and I use the document outline on Google Docs a lot.

12. What’s your perfect environment to create/write?

It varies. As long as I manage to get in the zone, I can write pretty much anywhere. I have written +1k words on napkins on a train but truthfully it's probably at home on my laptop when I'm alone.

arei’s thoughts: i’m a big fan of this fic and a lot of it is down to Steve’s characterization and how much he struggles with having a child thrust upon him. It’s so very in line with the headcanon I have of Steve that it was nice seeing it here.

That when Fritz is arrested for disturbance, he knows how to talk to the cops to get him released. That he can patch Fanboy like a professional medic after the guy got into a fight. That he can cook a meal from nothing, mend clothes and knows everything about meds. Turns out Jake had to take care for his family as the only responsible person since he was 5 years old. First his alcoholic parents and then his dying grandmother. Jake won’t let anyone in, but he will take care of them as much as he can. Rooster wants to change it.

part 1: “I want to make a bad decision that doesn’t result in someone dying,” Cody says, the words bubbling up from some dark depths of him, some place where Cody shoves his fears and his despair. “I want a mistake that isn’t fatal.”

part 2: Cody knows how possessive Obi-Wan is of him – if he needs a reminder, there’s one in how Obi-Wan’s fingers curl under Cody’s chin, firm and unyielding. He doubts either of the guards who brought him in will see the end of the day, and he’s not liking the chances the rest of the court has either.  

part 3: “Come with me,” Cody whispers again. “We’ll make something for ourselves. I don’t know what it will be, but I’d like to figure it out with you. There’s a future waiting for us, if we want to find it.”

9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

Of invidia, yes. It was originally written for the battleship exchange. I just looked in my records and I think I've deleted the tag cloud that inspired it, but how battleship works is that you try to hit as many tags as possible - I can remember that I was going for mercyfic, enemies to lovers, and a few sex tags, but in the end I decided to park that fic for battleship, mostly because I was writing for myself and not for my recipient haha. I wrote the first 2.5k of it almost the instant I grabbed the tags I wanted to hit, but didn't finish the other half of the fic until the morning I posted it during codywan week. The final scenes were mostly going to be the same - I knew they'd chat, I'd lay the groundwork for a fix it, and then they'd have sex - but the contents of the talk changed as I let the characters work out what they needed in the moment, and the sex ended up being a lot briefer than my bold grab bag of tags would have been.

For part 2, it kinda came together because of the prompt "throne sex" on my kink bingo card, and I was like... well that has to be sithywan XD so that was straightforward in idea->execution

I actually started part 3 before I ever had the idea for invidia, probably around the beginning of this year. It was originally going to be set during the war, with the tryst being a time for the two of them to swap intel and for Cody to maybe be forced to see how far he's come and ask if this is appropriate, and if he wants to keep on going with what they have (yes) but I switched out the backstory to make it after the end of the war after I decided to lift and shift the smut I'd written into the invidia-verse, so to speak.

11: What do you like best about this fic?

part 1: the fact that I let Cody voice some parts of himself that I don't think he's ever spoken about before - the pressure that he feels to perform and the weight of accountability for his choices when lives are at stake. Getting to give him catharsis and release through this "bad decision" also felt good and interesting to me because I don't think it's something I've explored about his character so explicitly before. I think I touch on it in my codywan on tatooine series, but only very obliquely through Cody's refusal to go back to that environment because he knows dealing with that pressure again would kill him.

part 2: giving Cody a new kink lol

part 3: the implication that Cody is going to walk out of his space ship onto the shiny new clone planet with Obi-Wan on his arm, decked out with whatever gifts of the week Obi-Wan has given him, and everyone else is going to go uh... whatcha got there Cody, and Cody's going to say "a smoothie"
