Tony Stark resigned his commission in Starfleet five years ago, after a disastrous away mission, and he swore he'd never go back. He just wants to be left alone to build warp engines in peace. But the universe has more in store for him than that, as he discovers when Admiral Fury comes to him with an offer he could never have expected and cannot possibly refuse: first officer and chief engineer aboard the all-new USS Avenger, a starship of Tony's own design. What's more, the Avenger's captain is Steve Rogers, hero of the Earth-Romulan War. Believed dead for over a century, Steve is miraculously alive... and very, very attractive.
But nothing is ever easy for Tony. As he wrestles with his secret desire for his new captain and his not-so-dormant fears, another mission starts to go wrong, and Tony becomes aware that Steve has secrets of his own -- and the truth could change everything.
Bookmarker's Notes:
Star Trek AU, with Steve and Tony being very much in character in the future. Science and adventure, and the terrible secret is pretty terrible, in context. Gripping and very enjoyable!

Week 4: Supernatural
Bingo Card Prompt: T5 Reassure
I don't usually write fics like this, but when the idea hit for this prompt, it wouldn't let go until I'd wrung everything out of it.
Also, the ending for this was loosely inspired by this Stony comic.

I read some of your work on AO3, and I love it!
I wanted to see if you still took requests for the 'three word prompts'? If so how about: Possessive, Shield, Love (Steve/Tony)
If you don't take requests then ignore me, but I hope you continue making really great fics!
(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧
Hey there - thank you for the prompt and your kind comments on my fic! Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I'm still going through these, just taking a bit to juggle them with ongoing WIPs. I hope you enjoy!
-----
Sometimes, Steve wondered if he kept his heart behind a shield—a metal barrier as familiar as the one that guarded him during battles. It was self-preservation, a way to avoid another disappointment, another lost love.
On the battlefield, Steve called the shots, but off of it, Tony Stark had an uncanny knack for evading all of Steve’s best laid plans. Each toss of a wink or casual flirtation added another dent to his heart’s armor.
There was an irony in the fact that a Stark had crafted his battle shield and now, decades later, another Stark did his damndest to penetrate his figurative shield. These were the thoughts that kept Steve up at night.
On top of everything, all Tony did to get past his defenses everyday was, well, existed.
Sitting on the other side of the common room, Tony looked incredibly soft in a pair of linen pajama pants, a worn MIT hoodie and a pair of reading glasses perched on his nose. He had no idea that Steve kept sneaking glances at him over his paperback. Had no idea that every time Tony bit his lip or twirled a finger through a stray lock of hair, it was a direct shot, right past his shield and straight to his heart.
Tony didn’t know, Tony couldn’t know. If Steve lowered his shield and let Tony in, Steve would want to keep Tony in his heart forever. Steve would want to possess every offered bit of love, horde it far beyond what Tony would expect or want. At least, what he assumed Tony would want--but to test that theory would be to lower his heart’s shield.
But here Tony was, sitting across from him looking soft and, now, meeting Steve’s gaze over the paperback. Smiling that crooked little smile that fractured his shield, calling Steve’s name in a whispered voice that boomed against the metal, asking him out to dinner in a suggestion that made him rip the shield from his heart and agree to it, consequences be damned.
Sometimes, Steve wondered if he kept his heart behind a shield. Tony Stark always had a way of getting around his defenses. This shield was no different.

I Could Never Give You Peace
pairing: Tony Stark / Steve Rogers
warnings: mentions of depression, bullying, anxiety
Based on the song Peace by Taylor Swift
Our coming-of-age has come and gone
Suddenly this summer is clear,
I’ve never had the courage in my convictions as long as danger is near
And it’s just around the corner darling ‘cause it lives in me
No I could never give you peace
But I’m a fire and I’ll keep your brittle heart warm
If your cascade ocean wave blues come
All these people think love’s for show, but I would die for you in secret
The devil’s in the details, but you gotta friend in me
Would it be enough, if I could never give you peace?
Your integrity makes me seem small
You paint dreamscapes on the wall
I talk shit with my friends, it’s like I’m wasting your honor
And you know that I’d swing with you for the fences
Sit with you in the trenches
Give you my wild, give you a child
Give you the silence that only comes when two people understand each other
Family that I chose now that I see your brother as my brother
Is it enough?
But there’s robbers to the east, clowns to the west
I’d give you my sunshine, give you my best
But the rain is always gonna come if you’re standing with me
But I’m a fire and I’ll keep your brittle heart warm
If your cascade ocean wave blues come
All these people think loves for show, but I would die for in secret
The devil’s in the details, but you gotta friend in me
Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
There were three types of monsters in Tony’s book. The actual monsters made by man and the aliens trying to invade their planet are one. The other kind comes by media. And the third is the one in your head.
Some people never face any of these, ignoring the monsters in their head, never seeing an alien or mutant, never been followed and ridiculed by the media and nameless faces behind hate accounts. Some people only face one and others maybe two. However, a select few, like Tony for example, have faced all three.
His teammates, he knows, have faced at least two out of the three. He knows for a fact that they all have personal demons and every one of them has punched an alien in the face at some point. The latter comes with the job description, though he supposes the former does too. Whoever said superhero’s were perfect had obviously never met the lot of them. They were all in the media too, of course, but it was different for them. For them, they were superheros the world knows nothing about. They keep their affairs quiet and hardly ever speak to the media unless they’ve been told too.
Like right now for example. Today they were getting ready for morning television and Tony had been in his room all morning getting ready, his boyfriend Steve wasn’t even allowed in. Tony had not expressed his worries and fears about the media to anyone. He stood in front of his full body mirror and his reflection stared back at him.
He was stunning, as he always was for interviews. He wore a red shirt on underneath a black blazer and slacks. The blazer was adorned in intricate golden detail making it look like small golden vines tangled within each other, going all the way around his sleeve cuffs and bottom of the blazer. He topped the whole ensemble off with his glasses and a pair of shiny red shoes. Looking back at himself though, he felt less than his best.
Tony was scrutinized in the media. Everything he did, they found out about and printed as the top story. ‘Tony Stark with a New Woman?’, ‘Playboy Tony Stark At It Again!’, ‘Is Tony Stark racist?’, ‘Tony Stark Out As Bisexual!’, ‘Tony Stark and Captain America- Will He Break America’s Heart?’. ‘Tony Stark New Design Destined For Failure’. The list of headlines go on and on. Sometimes Tony even believed the words they were saying and if the team messed up, it was never anyone else’s fault, but Tony’s. ‘Iron Man Destroy’s Homeless Shelter During Alien Attack’, ‘Is Iron Man A Terrorist?’ which was laughable seeing as one of the reasons he became Iron Man was because of terrorism, but his personal favorite was, ‘Do the Avengers Need Iron Man?’ Tony took the fall for it all, never commenting on any of those. Besides, he was always in the spotlight and he was used to the bad press. He could take the fall for his team and would. He would never let the press talk bad about any of his teammates. He wasn’t sure how any of them would handle bad press, but even if they could, Tony knew what thought those horrible tabloids can bring.
Danger was Tony’s middle name and it always lurked around the corner. In superhero life, in the media, and in his own head. As he stared into the mirror, he saw his hair, graying just slightly on the sides. He saw the crinkles of his eyes and the scars that peaked out a little of his red shirt that littered his chest. He was still devilishly handsome, but he felt as though with time, that would fade. He wanted to be the one for Steve, if Steve would ever one day have him, but he also knew how self-destructive and rampant he can be. His anger can be a daunting task for anyone.
The tabloids are right, a voice whispered in Tony’s head. You’ll never be good enough for the Captain.
Tony swallowed the thought down, but more soon followed. You’re not good enough to be Iron Man. You could do more. You’re not even intelligent enough to run Stark Industries.
The voice in his head sounded eerily like his father. Tony cringed and his chest felt heavy. How could a man like Steve Rogers ever love a man like you? The voice said and the thought alone was enough to bring Tony to tears, but before any could spill, there was a knock at the door.
“Are you ready sweetheart?” Steve called from the other side and Tony wiped his eyes and put on his best smile. Steve was the one who wanted to do this interview when it was brought up and Tony wouldn’t be the one who ruined it. He just prayed the interviewer had nice things to say about them, about Steve.
“Coming!” Tony shouted, right as the voice in the back of his mind echoed.
You can never give him peace.
They sat in front of a wall that had just been painted in the house for Steve’s benefit. He wanted to add some color and such to it, so Tony let him. He could sit and watch Steve paint for hours, the time just ticking by while he painted dreamscapes on the wall. Steve, while he might not look it, had a shit ton of imagination and creativity and he dreamed of things. He often told Tony that one day he wants a house in the country, like Clint has, with animals and kids running around playing. He dreams of a day where there are no more space invaders trying to take over the planet and they can live a life of peace. He dreams and dreams and Tony could get lost in it all, has even. The thoughts of him and Steve doing all those things together- it was breathtaking.
The interviewer sat in a chair across from them and a camera was next to her. Tony tried to set the interview on another side of the house that looked nicer, but Steve said he wanted it to look like they were normal people going through normal things like home renovations. The team agreed, not wanting to seem less than authentic. They had nothing to hide and nothing to lose. Tony did, but he told Steve to make sure it looked as nice as possible, so Steve had put away all his paint supplies and moved a nice black couch and some black chairs around so everyone would be comfortable and a glass coffee table lied in the middle of them all.
Tony and Steve sat in the middle next to each other. To the left of Tony was Bruce and Clint and to the right was Steve, Natasha, and Thor. The interviewer was across from them in a bright blue dress. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a professional bun and when she looked up, her blue eyes popped against her ivory skin. Her dress, Tony noted, matched her eyes. She was gorgeous, of course, and looked as though she held herself well.
“Is okay if we start now?” She asked, flashing them a brilliant white smile.
They all nodded in agreement. Tony sat quietly. He would let Steve start off this interview today. He was ready for it all to be over, he didn’t feel like plastering on a fake smile anymore than he had too.
Once the camera’s red dot was on, she started. “Welcome to Good Morning New York! I’m Shelby Mox and here with me today are the Avengers! We have the God of Thunder, Thor.” Thor smiled and waved at the camera. “Natasha Romanov aka Black Widow,” Nat threw up a dazzling smile. “Steve Rogers aka Captain America.” Steve smiled, nodding at the camera. “Tony Stark aka Iron Man,” Tony sent her a smile and bowed his head towards her. “Bruce Banner aka The Hulk,” Bruce smiled shyly. “And finally Clint Barton aka Hawkeye!” Clint nodded towards her, smiling as well.
Tony felt like he was going to drown in all the smiling that was going on. The interviewer went in, asking them questions. The normal things like what it’s like during battle and what they like to do during their free time. Everyone answered more or less like they always do. It was going by pretty smoothly, but of course, nothing ever went good and stayed good for Tony.
“So I’m going to ask you guys some questions and you guys can tell me whose most likely to do this in your group, okay?” She asked and everyone nodded, murmuring their okay’s. “Good! Now which one in the group is the most artistic?”
Everyone said Steve of course, except Thor, who said Tony’s name, which surprised him and bit and for the first time that day, Tony gave a genuine smile. “Why me?” Tony asked, confused.
“Well you craft beautiful things with your hands Tony! In Asgaurd, we take our technology and weaponry very seriously,” Thor explained to both Shelby and Tony. “You help build our suits in battle and your technology helps people everywhere.”
“So Tony, are you working on weapons again?” Shelby asked. Her blue eyes were wide with curiosity.
“No,” Tony sat up straighter. “I got rid of all that. My weaponry in specifically in our suits. It tends to come in handy for when we’re battling bad guys.”
“Isn’t that hypocritical of you though?” She asked, voice still polite. Tony was a bit taken aback by the question, but recovered quickly.
“No. I don’t believe so. I stopped building weapons so bad people couldn’t get a hold of them. So they couldn’t be sold to the people who are at war with us. I also wanted to make Stark Industries more greener. I don’t want what I make to kill the planet or other people. I make weapons for us so we can ward off the evil that comes from outsiders looking to kill.” Tony explained.
“And Ms. Potts was okay with all of that?” She asked. Tony was bewildered. Why would Pepper not of been okay with it?
“Of course. My company is completely green based now, for the most part. Why wouldn’t she be okay with it?” Tony couldn’t help but ask.
“Well you say it’s your company, but as I and many of us know, you left Pepper Potts as your CEO. Doesn’t that make it yours and her company? Or do you just tell her what to do everyday and she does it?” The woman’s voice had gone from nice to accusing in a matter of seconds. It still held the polite tone, but there was more of an edge now.
Tony was stunned. He shouldn’t of been, but he’d never heard anyone accuse him of being rude to Pepper or telling Pepper what she could and couldn’t do. It wasn’t true, at all. His voice returned, but when it did, it was defensive and low. “I can assure you that I do not tell Pepper what to do. In the end, I am the final decision maker, but even then Pepper doesn’t need me to say yes or no. She’s in that position of CEO because she knows what she’s doing. She’s handled it all, even when I was CEO. I can also assure you that she would not like that people saw her as a woman who lets a man make her decisions. That’s not Pep at all and I would never tell her what she can and cannot do at a company where she is the boss. I am simply a man who owns the company. Not the boss.”
He felt Steve put a hand over his in a way to calm him and it worked a bit. He felt a little of his anger ebb away, but the tension was in the room. He felt everyone’s eyes on them.
“Okay-” the interviewer smiled again, but this time, Tony didn’t trust her. She went on about the game as if their little spout had never happened and Tony let her, trying to forget the whole ordeal himself while she asked which one ate the most, which one is most likely to get drunk at a party, etc.
“I have time for one more question, now- which one of you would lay down your life for the rest?” She asked and before Tony could answer the question, the Avengers spoke up in unison.
“Tony.” They said and pointed at him. The shock for Tony today was enough to make him go into a heart attack, he was sure.
“Tony has saved me several times,” Nat spoke up.
“He’s always putting his life on the life for other people,” Clint explained. “He once almost had a whole building collapse on him so that I could get to safety.”
“My suit could’ve taken it, you couldn’t of,” Tony spoke up, looking over at Clint.
Clint shook his head. “Cap yelled at you for two weeks about how you could’ve died and you knew you could’ve.”
Tony waved a dismissive hand, starting to blush. “I was fine.”
Steve raised his eyes at his boyfriend, then looked at Shelby. “He’s very stubborn if you can’t tell. He had two broken ribs, a fractured wrist, a concussion, and then he had to be on oxygen for two days because he’d inhaled so much smoke from the building.”
“That must be hard on you, as his boyfriend.” Shelby said, giving Steve sad, puppy eyed look. It made Tony want to roll his eyes.
Steve gives her a small smile. “It can be,” he turns to look at Tony and it’s like they’re the only two in the room. Tony’s never been so entranced by someone in his life. Steve’s the only one whose ever made Tony forget about the world and his problems and the demons that goes on in his head. Sometimes when Steve looks at Tony, it’s like the whole world goes quiet and it’s the most peace Tony has ever felt in his life. He falls more and more in love with the man every day and he doesn’t show it nor does he speak on it, Tony’s not very good with feelings, but he knows when he has them and it astonishes him every time that he could love someone so much. Other than Peter of course, who is Tony’s pride and joy.
Steve continues with what he was saying, and he stuttered a bit when he took in a breath as if he forgot to breathe while looking at Tony and Tony had to remember that they were still sitting with a room full of people and the world, watching. “But I love him and his heart is always in the right place. Even if it may not seem like it. Tony’s taken the fall for all of us at one point or another. He’d never let anything happen to us if he can help it.”
“He’d let other things happen to other people though, yes?” Shelby asked and everyone stopped what they were doing. Tony felt as though he’d been punched. The avengers need not know that Tony was the media’s punching bag. They didn’t understand the media in that sense. It was all praise until it wasn’t.
Steve turned to look at Shelby, eyes wide. “What?”
Tony turned towards the woman who had her eyes narrowed on him. He faced her and sat up, eyes locked on hers. If she wanted to play this game, he would play it. Tony had grown softer over the years as he’d become Iron Man. He understood more, felt more. He’d came out of that shell his father had put him in and that shell was cold and devoid of emotion. Most people tended to forget that side of him now which meant that they underestimated how easily he could slip back into the shell.
“I fight for everyone. I fight for not only the citizens of New York, but for the world.” Tony’s voice was cold and clipped, but then as he turned to look at his teammates, whose eyes were wide in what Tony was sure to be bewilderment, Tony’s tone grew a bit softer. “I fight, especially, for my teammates.” He turned to look at Shelby. “We fight side by side, all the time. We aren’t the kinda people to just save the world and then not talk again until the battle cries call us back. We share a roof together, albeit on multiple floors, but it’s the same roof. We have dinners and movie nights and every single one of them are involved in Peter’s life.” Tony spoke up for the first time in the interview about Peter, his son. “These are not just my teammates,” he snapped at her. “This is my family. And this” he pointed towards him and Shelby. “Is over. I suggest you finish what you absolutely have too and get out. If anyone is lingering, Jarvis will tell me and I’ll have security escort you out. You can insult me all you like, but you will not do so in front of my family and in my own house.” Tony got up swiftly and without another word, walked out the room.
Steve was on his heels in an instant as Tony went into his room and turned to close the door. He was on the verge of another panic attack. “Go away Steve- I can’t-” Tony started, but he went to the other side of the room and slid down the wall, putting his face in-between his knees, breathing deeply like his therapist had taught him.
Steve came in behind him, closing the door softly and bent down in front of him. He spoke softly, “baby it’s okay, they’re leaving. Nat is making sure of it. That woman was very rude to you and I want you to know that we’re going to do everything in our power to make sure she won’t be on air anytime soon.”
At that confession, Tony burst into uncontrollable sobs. He didn’t want the lady to not be on air, besides that wouldn’t help Tony’s case. That would just make it worse, of course Steve doesn’t know that. Steve’s just trying to help, but Tony can’t seem to calm down enough for him to tell Steve not to do that, so he just keeps sobbing until Steve wraps his arms around him and lays him on his lap, holding him close. Soon Tony’s sobs turn into sniffles and hiccups and he lays his head on Steve’s chest listening to his heart beat. One beat. Two beats. Three beats. Four beats. Tony take a deep breath in as he hears the fifth beat and looks up at Steve. Steve’s looking down at him, smiling a bit and running his fingers through Tony’s hair. “She had no right to say or do any of that to you Tones,” Steve whispered.
“Let her air it,” Tony said and Steve was taken aback.
“What? Absolutely not!”
Tony pushed off of Steve and got up, going to the bathroom to wash off the tears and when he dried his face, he turned to see Steve in the doorway of their bathroom, arms crossed. He looked lovely. He was in a navy blue sweater and dark washed jeans with shiny black dress shoes. It wasn’t much, but Tony still thought he looked delectable.
“We are letting her run with what she has.” Tony said again.
“Not after painting you out to be some bad guy for the avengers when you’re not!” Steve replied, voice getting a bit higher.
“You’re only saying this to try and protect me, but Steve this is only going to make me look worse in the eyes of everyone if I don’t let her air it and don’t even get me started on the legal battle that could go on if she was to really wants to air it. Look-” Tony stopped and smiled at Steve. Wonderful Steve. “Steve this isn’t anything new to me. She just dropped to a low bar in front of you guys. Do you know how many interviews I’ve been in alone where they’ve said even more horrible things about me? Steve if we fuck up in the Avengers, do you know who they blame? Not you or Nat or anyone else, well except maybe Bruce. Bless his heart, he gets shit for being the Hulk, but other than that, it’s usually my fault. Which is fine!” Tony said quickly. “I don’t mind taking the fall for the team, especially when you guys don’t deserve the bad press. Just let her run with it and Steve maybe...” Tony stopped, looking down at his shoes, they did seem very interesting right about now. “Maybe they’re right ya know? Maybe you deserve someone whose better than me. You deserve the peace you want and you’ll never have that with me. Someone’s always going to be saying something about me and you if you stay with me. I could never give you peace Steve.”
It was quiet a long moment and Tony almost regretted his words. He didn’t want Steve to leave, but Steve deserved someone who was going to give him the life of peace. Steve’s always wanted to settle down and live the white picket fence life style. How could Tony ever give him that if there was always someone in the corner waiting until Tony came out of a restaurant and flashed pictures or when Tony was invited to the boring gala’s because he had to be and everyone had to be on their best behavior and that was oh-so-hard, because no one liked those galas unless there wasn’t someone on their best behavior and Tony had a whole company of people who worked for him. If Tony failed, sometimes that resulted in laying people off and that meant they didn’t have a job to feed their families and to pay a house payment. How was Tony ever going to give Steve peace?
After a moment, Steve said, “Tony, look at me please.”
Tony sighed and slowly lifted up his head to find that Steve was staring at him. Those deep ocean blue eyes looking dead into his and he was closer than before. He stood right in front of him and the world disappeared again. Not fair, Tony thought to himself. All it took was one look and he was all Steve’s again.
“Tony I love you. Do you know what means?” Steve said slowly, but with conviction. Tony shook his head, confused. “It means that I love you and that doesn’t stop with the good parts. I love your bad parts, I love the parts of you find ugly, I love you in front of people and in private and most importantly, I love you regardless of what some magazine or news caster has to say or believe. They don’t know you like I do Tony and for the record you are my peace. Sure we get the paps and the fans and, as Peter likes to call them, the haters-” Tony snorted at Cap saying ‘the haters’ and made a mental note to remind Peter so the boy could also get a good laugh in. Cap rarely ever used today’s slang. “But you Tony, you and Peter, y’all are my peace. Tony at home and in battle, you are my peace. The world can be burning, and trust me it’s tried, I’ll meet your eyes in a battle and I know that as long as you’re by my side, I will always have a peace in me. Fuck the outside noises, they don’t know anything about my relationship with you and the peace and love we have for this team, this city, and Peter. We fight for peace for everyone else almost on a daily, but me? I have my peace. Its with you. Its with Peter when we sit down for family movies and its with this team when we have dinner or after a battle and someone makes the first joke signifying we won. Our days are limited Tony, just on the mere fact of our job discription, but if I was taken from this world today, just know that you- Anothony Stark, are and have been my peace since the day you unfroze me from that wreatched ice cube.”
Tony was in tears and Steve kissed him. He kissed him like the first time and it was filled with so much love that Tony thought he was going to sob in emotion. When they finally pulled back and out of breath, Tony smiled and leaned his head against Steve’s chest. “You’re as much as my peace as I am yours, you and Peter.” Tony whispered and Steve wrapped his arms around him protectively.
“We’re still letting her air that tape,” Tony stated after a minute and Steve laughed.
“Fine, but only if I get to put out a statement that the avengers win and lose together as a team. No more with the press just picking on you. They’ll have to go through me first.”
“And us,” a voice pipped up and Steve and Tony turned around to see that it was Nat who’d spoke up with the rest of the team behind her along with Pepper. “Cap is right Stark. We’re in this together, always. Besides, where’s the fun in letting you take all the credit anyway?”
Tony laughed and looked up smiling. He was alright with this being his peace.

Aziraphale’s Choice, the Job Connection, and Michael Sheen’s Morality
Update: Michael Sheen liked this post on Twitter, so I'm fairly certain there is a lot of validity to it.
I’ve had time to process Aziraphale’s choice at the end of Season 2. And I think only blaming the religious trauma misses something important in Aziraphale’s character. I think what happened was also Aziraphale’s own conscious choice––as a growth from his trauma, in fact. Hear me out.
Since November 2022 I’ve been haunted by something Michael Sheen said at the MCM London Comic Con. At the Q&A, someone asked him about which fantasy creature he enjoyed playing most and Michael (bless him, truly) veered on a tangent about angels and goodness and how, specifically,
Tumblr media
We as a society tend to sort of undervalue goodness. It’s sort of seen as sort of somehow weak and a bit nimby and “oh it’s nice.” And I think to be good takes enormous reserves of courage and stamina. I mean, you have to look the dark in the face to be truly good and to be truly of the light…. The idea that goodness is somehow lesser and less interesting and not as kind of muscular and as passionate and as fierce as evil somehow and darkness, I think is nonsense. The idea of being able to portray an angel, a being of love. I love seeing the things people have put online about angels being ferocious creatures, and I love that. I think that’s a really good representation of what goodness can be, what it should be, I suppose.
I was looking forward to BAMF!Aziraphale all season long, and I think that’s what we got in the end. Remember Neil said that the Job minisode was important for Aziraphale’s story. Remember how Aziraphale sat on that rock and reconciled to himself that he MUST go to Hell, because he lied and thwarted the will of God. He believed that––truly, honestly, with the faith of a child, but the bravery of a soldier.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale, a being of love with more goodness than all of Heaven combined, believed he needed to walk through the Gates of Hell because it was the Right Thing to do. (Like Job, he didn’t understand his sin but believed he needed to sacrifice his happiness to do the Right Thing.)
That’s why we saw Aziraphale as a soldier this season: the bookshop battle, the halo. But yes, the ending as well.
Because Aziraphale never wanted to go to Heaven, and he never wanted to go there without Crowley.
But it was Crowley who taught him that he could, even SHOULD, act when his moral heart told him something was wrong. While Crowley was willing to run away and let the world burn, it was Aziraphale (in that bandstand at the end of the world) who stood his ground and said No. We can make a difference. We can save everyone.
Tumblr media
And Aziraphale knew he could not give up the ace up his sleeve (his position as an angel) to talk to God and make them see the truth in his heart.
I was messed up by Ineffable Bureaucracy (Boxfly) getting their happy ending when our Ineffable Husbands didn’t, but I see now that them running away served to prove something to Aziraphale. (And I am fully convinced that Gabriel and Beelzebub saw the example of the Ineffables at the Not-pocalypse and took inspiration from them for choosing to ditch their respective sides)
But my point is that Aziraphale saw them, and in some ways, they looked like him and Crowley. And he saw how Gabriel, the biggest bully in Heaven, was also like him in a way (a being capable of love) and also just a child when he wasn’t influenced by the poison of Heaven. Muriel, too, wasn’t a bad person. The Metatron also seemed to have grown more flexible with his morality (from Aziraphale's perspective). Like Earth, Heaven was shades of (light?) gray.
Aziraphale is too good an angel not to believe in hope. Or forgiveness (something he’s very good at it).
Aziraphale has been scarred by Heaven all his life. But with the cracks in Heaven’s armor (cracks he and Crowley helped create), Aziraphale is seeing something else. A chance to change them. They did terrible things to him, but he is better than them, and because of Crowley, he feels ready to face them.
(Will it work? Can Heaven change, institutionally? Probably not, but I can't blame Aziraphale for trying.)
At the cafe, the Metatron said something big was coming in the Great Plan. Aziraphale knows how trapped he had felt when he didn’t have God’s ear the first time something huge happened in the Big Plan. He can’t take a chance again to risk the world by not having a foot in the door of Heaven. That’s why we saw individual human deaths (or the threat of death) so much more this season: Elspeth, Wee Morag, Job’s children, the 1940s magician. Aziraphale almost killed a child when he couldn’t get through to God, and he’s not going through that again.
“We could make a difference.” We could save everyone.
Tumblr media
Remember what Michael Sheen said about courage and doing good––and having to “look the dark in the face to be truly good.” That’s what happened when Aziraphale was willing to go to Hell for his actions. That’s what happened when he decided he had to go to Heaven, where he had been abused and belittled and made to feel small. He decided to willingly go into the Lion’s Den, to face his abusers and his anxiety, to make them better so that they would not try to destroy the world again.
Him, just one angel. He needed Crowley to be there with him, to help him be brave, to ask the questions that Heaven needed to hear, to tell them God was wrong. Crowley is the inspiration that drives Aziraphale’s change, Crowley is the engine that fuels Aziraphale’s courage.
But then Crowley tells him that going to Heaven is stupid. That they don’t need Heaven. And he’s right. Aziraphale knows he’s right.
Aziraphale doesn’t need Heaven; Heaven needs him. They just don’t know how much they need him, or how much humanity needs him there, too. (If everyone who ran for office was corrupt, how can the system change?)
Terry Pratchett (in the Discworld book, Small Gods) is scathing of God, organized religion, and the corrupt people religion empowers, but he is sympathetic to the individual who has real, pure faith and a good heart. In fact, the everyman protagonist of Small Gods is a better person than the god he serves, and in the end, he ends up changing the church to be better, more open-minded, and more humanist than god could ever do alone.
Aziraphale is willing to go to the darkest places to do the Right Thing, and Heaven is no exception. When Crowley says that Heaven is toxic, that’s exactly why Aziraphale knows he needs to go there. “You’re exactly is different from my exactly.”
____
In the aftermath of Trump's election in the US, Brexit happened in 2018. Michael Sheen felt compelled to figure out what was going on in his country after this shock. But he was living in Los Angeles with Sarah Silverman at the time, and she also wanted to become more politically active in the US.
Sheen: “I felt a responsibility to do something, but it [meant] coming back [to Britain] – which was difficult for us, because we were very important to each other. But we both acknowledge that each of us had to do what we needed to do.” In the end, they split up and Michael moved back to the UK.
Sometimes doing the Right Thing means sacrificing your own happiness. Sometimes it means going to Hell. Sometimes it means going to Heaven. Sometimes it means losing a relationship.
And that’s why what happened in the end was so difficult for Aziraphale. Because he loves Crowley desperately. He wants to be together. He wanted that kiss for thousands of years. He knows that taking command of Heaven means they would never again have to bow to the demands of a God they couldn’t understand, or run from a Hell who still came after them. They could change the rules of the game.
And he’s still going to do that. But it hurts him that he has to do that alone.

Tony: Platypus, I think Steve is cheating on me.
Rhodey: What!? That lying bastard! Wait, how do you know?
Tony: I don't actually have any actual proof.
Rhodey: Oh, then I'm sure he's not cheating on you. And if he is, he's a monster. And if he's not, you guys are great together. But if he is, I will kill him.

Science and adventure and the terrible secret is pretty terrible, in context. Gripping and very enjoyable!
