Wildflowers: The Tale of Aredhel and Luthien by lightofthetrees - G - 10.3k - Aredhel/Luthien - A sweet AU fic where Aredhel escapes into Doriath with Maeglin, who grows up there instead of in Nan Elmoth. I really enjoyed the glimpses into their lives in Doriath and the ending suited them very well!

Wild-Wandering by Wood and Glen by @meadowlarkx - M - 1.7k - Daeron/Luthien - Beautiful writing which so brings you into the physical and emotional space of this tragic fem!Daeron/Luthien story.

Winter Glowed on her Leaves by BloodwingBlackbird - M - 1.2k - Galadriel/Luthien - Luthien is a powerful force on Galadriel and I love her as a perpetual “what-if” in Galadriel’s memory.

Woman Into Bird by arriviste - T - 6k - Earendil/Elwing - Beautiful, heartbreaking Elwing piece. The final scene is a gut-punch.

Indissoluble by @polutrope - E - 2.5k - Idril/Tuor/Voronwe - P does such a great job showing characters are are comfortable with each other and really beyond being embarrassed about their sexual foibles. This fic also does a great job balancing a committed three-way relationship!

The Kinslayer in the Woods by @elvain - T - 4.5k - Daeron/Maglor - Love this portrayal of Daeron, as well as the games he and Maglor play to avoid having to be who they are.

Life in Miniature by @thescrapwitch - G - 2.8k - This is SUCH a lovely little fic surrounding the memory of Gondolin in Aman. Author does an excellent job of weaving in the views and feelings of many characters and it feels so true to Elves’ strong memories, particularly to places.

Like I'm Set on Fire by corollaire - M - 808 - Indis/Miriel - Tasty Mindis oral; see Miriel on her knees for Indis.

One Whole with My Other by lonelyvisitor - E - 4.2k - Indis/Miriel - Now obsessed with the idea that Miriel and Indis are legally married to each other vis-a-vis Finwe. The author does a wonderful job with the feelings here.

Peaches We Devour, Dusty Skin and All by @niennawept - M - 2.2k -Aredhel/Elenwe - Some very tasty Aredhel/Elenwe! Their dynamic here is sexy and the pull towards each other warring with Elenwe’s goals for herself 👌

Picnic by @swanmaids - E - 1.6k - Aredhel/Vana - Ahh! Here we get the Aredhel/Vana partner relationship to Celegorm/Orome and I love it!! Vana is so carefree and relaxed here, but still concerned with Aredhel’s feelings <3

Pity For Your Hurts by @thelordofgifs - 666 - G - Finduilas/Gwindor - Finduilas and Gwindor before his capture </3 This piece captures a very ~courtly love~ kind of feel in their relationship and despite differences, you can see how much they care for each other.

The Plans We Make, the Memories We Record by LadyBrooke - M - 1k - Indis/Miriel - Bittersweet Mindis (w/ hints of Finwe/Indis/Miriel) as these women struggle to move on in the wake of everything that’s happened.

Sawdust by @starspray - T - 559 - Findis & Finwe - I love this exploration of Findis’ relationship with Finwe! I feel like that’s one that isn’t often explored and it’s done very well here.

Shadow-Song by Arveldis - T - 730 - Finrod & Sauron - This ficlet does an excellent job capturing the power play between Finrod and Sauron, as well as making Sauron terrifying.

Shadows of Valiance by Midnightjynx1813 - G - 2.5k - Azaghal/Maedhros - Azaghal and Maedhros bonding! This author works poetry into the fic to great effect and I really enjoyed how much Maedhros comes to rely on Azaghal.

Sometimes Too Hot the Eye of Heaven Shines by @welcomingdisaster - M - 2.6k - Celebrimbor/Narvi, Celebrimbor & Sauron - Crunchy look at the dynamics between Celebrimbor, Narvi, and Sauron from Sauron’s perspective.

To Give Up Control by @jouissants - NR - Maglor/Uinen - Ahhh just delicious Maglor/Uinen…Alix’s descriptions are always SO vivid and beautiful.

Two Queens by LiveOakWithMoss - E - 262 - Indis/Miriel - Miriel sure knows her way around a strap.

Celebration by maitimiel - NR - Tar-Miriel/OFC - Crunchy tasty Tar-Miriel’s favorite handmaidens sleep with her ft. her and Ar-Pharazon’s marital issues. Excellent look at the dying Numenorean state.

Courting Gifts by Muccamukk - G - 1k - Arwen/Eowyn, Aragorn/Arwen - This is such a cute Arwen/Eowyn piece focusing on the cultural differences between Arwen and the Men around her.

Cousin, Sister, Lover, Queen by broken_pencils - E - 11k - Eowyn/Lothiriel - This one is so good and so bittersweet and hit so many real notes. I’m just aching for Eowyn. The author does a great job of balancing her inherent unhappiness as a lesbian in a marriage with a man with the deep platonic love she obviously has for Faramir, and Lothiriel is such fun in this.

Fade by Lady Ash - E - 6.2k - Denethor/Gandalf - Can I say something other than "Denethor/Gandalf BDSM relationship" that would entice you more?

Ode to a Nightingale by @maironsbigboobs - E - 1k - Aragorn/Arwen - Some light, fun, Aragorn/Arwen smut.

Plentiful as Sand is Plentiful by @searchingforserendipity25 - G - 675 - I so love this look at Aragorn and Elrond’s relationship <3

Shake Loose All Your Garnet Jewels by lastwingedthing - T - 2.8k - Arwen/Eowyn - Lovely lovely fic on “what if Arwen and Eowyn had been part of the Fellowship?” Absolutely cinematic!

Untitled by @swanmaids - NR - Annael & Rian - Rian :((( Her story is so sad and yet there are at times griefs that cannot be overcome and Heather captures that very well here.

Without Dawn, No Evening by pscoptera - M - 4.6k - Arwen/Eowyn - If you want a truly historic fic, this one was originally written before the Return of the King film had released. A really interesting look at Eowyn’s sexuality and desires with what feels like realistic muddling of the issues in her mind.

Hobbits

On These Hither Shores by Arveldis - G - 3.2k - Boromir & Frodo - Boromir and Frodo bonding (sort of)! This fic does a great job capturing their feelings.

The Power of Tea by @hobbitwrangler - G - 1.8 - Bilbo & Gilraen - Fantastic character dynamics! And Bilbo feels so in-character.

Twist to Uncoil by katajainen - G - 1.3 - Bilbo & Thranduil - Ahhh lovely lovely look at Thranduil and Bilbo’s relationship as Bilbo recounts his time living in Mirkwood unseen.

Grade these fanfiction tropes!

-Amnesia

-i forgot what it's called but the trope of accidentally ingesting or inhaling a drug that turns the character lustful

LOVE AMNESIA FICS IF EITHER A. AMNESIA MAKES SENSE FOR CHARACTER (in the end 90% of my fanfic preferences boil down to "if it's in character it's good, if it isn't something they'd likely go through boo" unless it's a quite unique idea or well written enough to tempt me). Or B. It's sort of a very temporary Tabula Rasa "short term" type amnesia because that can be very funny or interesting exploration and if it is angsty its temporary. (I say this but I've written... the long angsty kind).

I'll say A-B grade. I don't look for it unless the source characters already got amnesia like Zhang Qiling or Zhao Yunlan (of past lives), because I really like canon compliant/adjacent/divergent fic so it's playing with a character situation they already had. (I do get my heart desperately broken searching for both those characters amnesia fics ToT). But it's a B if it's for anything else - I like it and I'll read it but it's not Absolutely My Jam always.

Sex Pollen trope I think is what you're looking for? Grade A+++ showstopping. Amazing. Incredible. A classic from Star Trek TOS Pon Farr episode that I'd now like to see played with for fun wherever people fancy to explore (whether that's crack comedy to angst realism I'm fascinated where people go with it). Considering rhe intense amounts of tentacles grabbing Wu Xie in dmbj, a spore thing impregnating him, and every other canon batshit Wild thing that can happen in dmbj

(if you said the iron Triangle met an alien, stole it's ship, met Spock, Pangzi married T'Pring, Zhang Qiling punched Dr. MCcoy out. Then Captain Kirk dropped them home in a rush into America Washington DC and Pangzi ran into Krychek from X Files and made a hush hush shady deal for some cold sexy cash? I would believe u. I would say yep, canon compliant. Anything is probably canon compliant... except San shu being a good uncle and apologizing to wu xie for all the fucked up shit. But hey idk I haven't read Everything, maybe one day that awful uncle Does apologize and Wu Xie goes to therapy about it???... I doubt it but hey. Canon divergent if not compliant, probably, something changed so San Shu would do such a thing.) My point is sex pollen is absolutely well within the dmbj wheelhouse of batshit weird sci fi horror esque bullshit and I'm frankly a bit shocked there's not at least a heap more tentacle sex and sex pollen fics. And if there are more than I think, then I'd like links/recs ToT

Adjacent to the something makes characters magically horny trope? I'm also quite fond of any Wild Trope used in a fic for the hell of it especially if it's a canon compliant/adjacent/divergent fic (or such a fic but comedy crack). Like dmbj and Guardian and Star Trek are Excellent fandoms to play with fun bizarre ideas since you could argue its "just another day they likely had I guess." Shen Wri turns into a kitty cat and Zhao Yunlan takes care of his boy? Some Dixingren turned him. Wu Xie has time traveled? Sure, he went the wrong direction and ended up 1000 years in the past why the fuck not. Spock is now inside someone else's body? Well he's already been in McCoys! Might as well right any body switch of your dreams!! Hei Xiazi's a vampire?! Well maybe he's always been and just didn't bring it up! ToT. Zhang Qiling jumped universes to an alternate reality where "insert your dream AU here"? Sure, he can't always remember stuff, for all we know this has happened before and Will happen again. I just love the kinds of stories where wild tropes are just very easy to insert amd play with regular canon.

Thank you for thinking of me! It is not actually that frequently asked these days because mostly people don't ask me things when I have anon off. I meant to write a sequel to that reclist at some point -- that was when I got into the fandom -- but then I started writing fic for it instead.

I went through everything tagged Pining and 616 and Steve/Tony that were posted after 2014 on AO3 and picked out several of the ones I remember liking and then threw in a few things that weren't actually tagged Pining but that I remembered had pining in them.

Come the Knives of the Springtime, by scatteredmoonlight. Early canon pining at a gala!

Danger Mouse, by isozyme. Stranded together after a crash landing in the Savage Land (does anyone ever land there on purpose?), Tony is inadvertently infected with the need to cuddle Steve.

dick drunk, by mistymountainking. Not actually tagged as pining, but this is 20,000 words of early New Avengers PWP in which Steve, a good pal, offers to fuck Tony until he stops thinking about drinking, and Tony is convinced that Steve definitely could never really want him, while Steve is busy fucking him through the mattress.

Hot Brunettes, Huh? by unosarta. Early canon identity porn pining. Steve has it bad for Mr. Stark.

I Don't Want My Heart to Show, by laudatenium. Early-canon AU where Steve is around for early ToS and becomes Tony's bodyguard, during the events ToS #45. Identity porn. Pining. Feels very classic.

I'll Be Looking at the Moon, by BlossomsintheMist. Set in the aftermath of The Crossing, an AU in which everyone but Tony has come back and rejoined the team; Tony is off moping because he feels bad about all those mind-controlled murders, and Steve hunts him down and helps him get right again. This is very long. I reread it frequently.

in case of emergency, by Welcoming_Disaster. Sparring fic! Everyone likes a good sparring fic!

Just for the Conversation, by msermesth. A threesome between 616 Tony, 616 Steve (Commander Rogers), and Ults Tony. Steve does a lot of pining.

Like a Hurricane, by resurrectedhippo. More "Steve pines for Tony while having a threesome with Tony and someone else," though in this case the third person is Ru.

ooh you and me would be a big conversation, by Mizzy. Set in current canon! One of those fics where Steve and Tony are sleeping together without actually talking about what that means to each other, and maybe they should. Has a fun angsty pining plot.

Stark Disassembled, by Crait. A series that is an AU take on Extremis up through (currently) Civil War, with Tony pining a whole lot for Steve. Contains one of my favorite Tony voices ever.

The Time of the Season, by WhenasInSilks. WIP. Early canon fic in which Steve basically goes into heat (not A/B/O) and really needs to have a whole lot of sex right now and also is pining after Mr. Stark. Luckily, Steve's good friend Iron Man is ready to step in and pretend to be Mr. Stark for him.

when you are fallen, by haemodye. Basically an AU of the premise of the movie Ghost, in which everyone thinks Steve is dead but really Steve is invisible and floating around and watching Tony really completely lose it when he thinks Steve is dead. They both pine a lot. I think I have recced this before; I feel like it is one of those fics that doesn't get recced as much as it deserves.

You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real), by Kiyaar. Ki doesn't write a whole lot of pining, but when she does, she destroys me. An AU set in the 70s where Steve isn't Captain America anymore and he picks Tony up at Studio 54 and they hook up in the middle of all this glittery coke-fueled disco decadence while not actually realizing who the other person is. So much angst and pining.

Favorite Time Of Year:

Early spring, when the snow hasn't entirely melted yet, but the sunlight feels warm again and you can see the tiny crocuses begin to bud. First snowfall in autumn is 1A.

Fave Fanfic:

Okay. Uh. Fuck. I have read so much fic (I have nearly a thousand AO3 bookmarks), so we're gonna pick my current Riordanverse fave, the series the grace of the gods is a grace that comes by violence is an insanely good trilogy of character study works, including a post-TOA Apollo and role-swapped gods (and demigods).

Also, the K/S brainrot is eternal, so I also gotta rec another I read semi-recently, Somebody To Die For. This one's incomplete, fair warning, but it's still a really good take on the AOS!Mirrorverse and how that twists the characters, pretty Kirk-and-Spock-centric, only with roughly two hundred percent more murder and planned regicide.

MustangSally has 33 stories at Gossamer. Even if you haven’t read it, you’ve probably heard of at least one of them, Iolokus, since it’s an X-Files fanfic classic. All her fics hit big and are well worth your time. I’ve recced some of my favorites here before, including And Dance by the Light of the Moon, All the Children are Insane, and Iolokus. What's the story behind your pen name?

I could tell you but then I would have to kill you.

Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?

Yes and no. Yes, because life has moved on since the early nineties and the characters and the fans are in vastly different places now. Our current tech would make the premise of the X-Files impossible. No, because of the longevity of some of the Star Trek TOS work (there’s an archive of hard copy fanzines at the University of Iowa). Top-drawer authors started out in TOS fandom.

I’m just greatly saddened that my physical body is showing wear and tear while the fic doesn’t. Fic gets to stay smooth-skinned and muscular, captured at the peak of perfection.

What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?

At the risk of sounding atrociously trite, I think of the friends I made. I met some very remarkable women that I’ve been able to stay friends with online for over twenty-five years. We may have moved to Facebook and post entirely too much about our pets and which of our body parts has sagged this week, but we’re friends. It’s a furiously funny, feminist, and well-educated group of women with jobs in the highest levels of academia, finance, communications, and media. I’m amused by the fact that if I have a question about how a virus replicates, I can ask a PhD I’ve been drunk with in Las Vegas.

Back in the day, I had a job that sent me traveling around major cities in the US and UK. I could post on a message board and within ten minutes there were people I could go out for dinner and drinks with. We already knew we had something we could talk about for at least a couple of hours. Additionally, most of these people were women so there was an added level of security. Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?

Well, it was mostly atxc and the Yahoo! groups mailing lists that spiraled out into Geocities sites and, eventually, LiveJournal. The amusing thing is that getting in on the ground floor of social media and the Internet has helped me get jobs! When I look at a new piece of software, I think, ‘this is hella easier than uploading to Geocities.’ We had to walk uphill both ways, in the snow, on dial-up, fighting off dinosaurs with our AOL CDs while writing HTML code. What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?

DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.

The past four years in politics have basically been the ugliest online kerfuffle the world has ever seen. I survived the Shipper Wars of ’96 and I thought those were brutal, but that was NOTHING. The only way to win an argument online is to not have the argument at all. Arguing with a troll is like mudwrestling a pig: You both get filthy and only the pig is happy.

What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?

I had the most terrible straight-girl crush on Scully. I wanted to be her best friend, I wanted to BE her. I wanted to order Chinese food and paint each other’s nails and talk about bones. Scully and Princess Leia and I could all just hang out poolside with hot and cold running waiters and poolboys, drink margaritas, and bitch about how unfair it all was – if the stupid men would just get OUT OF THE WAY AND LET US DO OUR JOBS, the world would be so much better. What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?

This question is really about Iolokus, isn’t it? You can’t fool me. [Lilydale note: I can neither confirm nor deny the motivation for this question, but I cannot complain about the answer.]

Simply put, I was enraged. The moment it was revealed that Scully’s ova had been used in experimentation, I lost my feminist mind. It was the most obscene defilement imaginable. Scully wasn’t nearly as angry as I was. What I thought needed to happen was for Scully to become a fiery force of vengeance against the MEN who had done this to her. Clearly, I was not going to get that level of satisfaction from the show, as I was imagining Kali-like carnage on a global scale. I emailed RivkaT (whom I did not know well at that point) with a proposition that we work together. Strangely enough, we didn’t meet face to face until we were well into the project, but we did talk on the phone quite a bit. The rules were simple – everyone had to be punished in truly horrific ways, and at some point, we had to see if we could write a car chase (only because that seemed impossible). Then it basically turned into a very twisted game of chicken to see who could be the most outrageous in terms of killing people off or writing really horrific things that fit within the structure of the narrative. I did, in the end, write the car chase, but RivkaT one-upped me by throwing in a helicopter (a FOX News helicopter, at that).

Really, RivkaT? A helicopter? What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom? I am terribly proud of what I wrote, pleased that it brought pain and pleasure in equal amount to people, and, again, thrilled by the people I became friends with. I admit that I stopped watching the show when Scully announced her pregnancy. I could only see a long jump over a shark tank for the rest of the series. I haven’t watched the new episodes, either. It is complete in my mind and doesn’t need to be continued. I wouldn’t say no to having a reunion with some of my fic friends, although we’re still chatting online like everyone does. Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?

Rivka and I wrote in the Buffy fandom for a few years, but then we moved on to real adult jobs that left absolutely no time for me to write. I’m in education, and I regularly sweat blood for fear that someone is going to find my old fic. The Buffy people were fun; there was a certain *shininess* to them that I really enjoyed. The X-men authors were just batshit and delightful, and some amazing stuff came out of Marvel fandom, particularly in the Thor/Loki and Steve/Bucky subgenres. I’ve learned to appreciate a good coffee shop AU and one famous Erik/Charles fic where all the main characters are crabs. Seriously, crabs—it’s hysterical. [Lilydale note: Other Crabs Cannot Be Trusted by groovyphilia currently has almost 2,500 kudos at AO3.]

Every few years, I’ll have a student try to explain to me what fandom is and I just smirk. Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully? No. Not really. Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom? I fell into an X-Men hole a few years back and had a great old time wallowing in the Cherik muck, and there was a flirtation with BBC Sherlock as well. Strangely enough, I became interested in A/B/O fics only because of what they were saying about the role of women in our society. The limitations on the male omegas seem absurd and then you realize those are the same limitations put on women all. the. time.

Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?

RivkaT very nicely formatted everything and put it up on AO3. What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?

I will always be stupidly proud of how shocked and horrified people were by Iolokus. The truth of the matter is that Iolokus has Greek drama at its core. Scully is Medea, and the entire story is lousy with “blood on the threshing floor” and Dionysian rites. The everyday is subverted into horror, and wives and daughters will tear men limb from limb like the Maenads. Since I was ultimately disappointed with what Chris Carter did with the entire show, that approach seemed appropriate.

At a certain level, all fic is corrective fic. Like critic Anne Jamison said, “Irritated fans produce fanfic like irritated oysters produce pearls.” And because fic has fallen so much into women’s sphere, a pure form of correction is not just the death of the author but the MURDER, a new creation springing up from the spilled blood like Cadmus sowing dragon’s teeth.

Okay, that’s a bit much. Maybe I should just take myself back to the isle of Goth Amazons or something. Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?

I had to write a self-evaluation and a reflection on pedagogy today. If that’s not fiction, I don’t know what the fuck is.

All my creativity is caught up in trying to pretend to be a normal middle-aged white woman so no one knows I am really a lizard.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?

Keep writing, keep reading, keep fighting the commercialization of narratives. As things grow more and more commodified, all our dreams and desires reduced to tchotchkes made in China, it’s a revolutionary act to separate your work from the marketplace. Be bold, take chances, turn the trope on its ear and kick it in the ass. Take everything the creators have done to make a work palatable to the unwashed masses and set it on fire.

Be subversive.

Be mean.

Have a great fucking time.

Making a quick lil rec list in case anyone’s lookin to read something new. These are some of my absolute fave fics from different fandoms, they are so fun to read, and I’m sure I’ve recced more than a few before already, but I cannot sleep so here they are listed again!

Oblivious and it’s sequel Imperious--on fanfiction.net, Remus Lupin centric, multi-chapter, featuring Remadora in Imperious. First fic deals with Remus once again teaching at Hogwarts and facing off with the werewolf that bit him as a child (not Fenrir Greyback--this fic was written before Greyback was introduced in Order of the Phoenix.) Great world building and original characters, spot on characterization, Remus being a badass but also somewhat of a dork.

Equilibrium by PSW--gen, multi-chapter, McCoy and Spock centric, torture. Y’all this fic is GOOD. Like holy shit. I caught myself wanting to write fanfic for it before I remembered that it itself is fanfic and not canon. Starts off with McCoy and others being kidnapped and their deaths faked. Spock and the rest of the Enterprise are grieving (and my heart breaks every time.) Meanwhile, McCoy is being forced to engineer a treatment for captive Vulcans, Romulans, and Rigelians who are being subjected to some really awful stuff--but I won’t spoil it for you. I will say though that this fic brings out a mixture of emotions, from anger and disbelief to excitement and absolute relief. Like edge-of-your-seat action. This is not a Spones fic but the Spock/McCoy friendship is strong and central to the fic’s resolution. A must for McCoy fans cause he’s just so good in this fic. The OCs are great as well, you find yourself caring about them a lot.

Surgeon’s Mate by belmanoir--ok, this one IS Spones and it is fucking amazing. Oneshot, Original Series canon compliant, featuring scenes from a couple of episodes. The Spones relationship develops despite McCoy constantly misinterpreting Spock’s flirting as criticism and being grouchy about it. The summary itself is “Spock likes McCoy. McCoy won’t take a hint” which sums it up pretty well. Spot on characterization. Kirk is a dork.

Of Cinema and Sticky Notes by bluepeony--Wolfstar, no-magic modern day au, two chapters. Remus and Sirius being cute and falling in love in the boring office where they both work. They have a bit of a confrontation in the second chapter but they work it out.

Just a Face on a Train by katherynefromphilly--Raimi!verse Spider-Man 2, multi-chapter, quick read, from the POV of a waitress who recognizes Peter from the train and does her best to help him out without letting him know that she knows he’s Spider-Man. Very heart warming.

The Gleaming Road by melblue--long oneshot, Faramir/Eomer. I’ve recently recced this one but I shall again because I just gotta. Denethor, a certified asshole, forces Faramir to seduce Eomer so Denethor can gain an advantage during talks of strengthening alliances between Gondor (full of homophobes) and Rohan. Faramir is reluctant (I mean who wouldn’t be when your dad is like “go sleep with that dude so I can fuck them over the contracts between our countries--also, I hate you”) But despite internalized homophobia, he falls for Eomer (who is patient and awesome and doesn’t fall for Denethor’s tricks but definitely falls for Faramir like right off the bat) Great smut included as well. Boromir is a good brother.

Bones and the 2.0 by AndreaLyn--This fic is super entertaining. TOS McCoy ends up on the AOS Enterprise and Jim is perplexed and giddy. AOS McCoy is annoyed. TOS McCoy is just chilling. TOS Spones and AOS McKirk. Very cute fic, and each of the TOS trio end up making an appearance (one is very brief.)

Seasons of Wonder by ashinae and cruisedirector--10 chapters of a developing relationship between Aragorn, Arwen, Faramir, and Eowyn. Starts off with the canon couples and ends up with with polyamory. Very sweet smut, they’re all adorable. This was the first fic I read with Aragorn/Faramir and now I can’t seem to get enough of it.

Publishing in case anyone else should be interested in some lovely fanfics.

Most fics are AOS-inspired since I am still pretty new and finding TOS fic has proven trickier.

You Don’t Have To (Say Yes) by luminousbeings – The abridged sexual history of James Tiberius Kirk. Or, Jim’s varyingly unhealthy idea of what sex is supposed to be (a it-gets-worse-before-it-gets-better story)

It starts off pretty dark and has a lot of themes of rape and tyranny from Jim’s youth on Tarsus IV but it’s beautiful and more of a Jim character study than anything.

we have not yet touched the stars by prouvairing – Sometimes they’ll also ask him why he hasn’t gone out and chased his soulbond yet. Jim will point to the sky, and say, “The moon’s always there, babe. Don’t need to go chasin’ after her.” It is January, year 2063. Humanity has quietly achieved interstellar travel, and Jim Kirk’s soulbond stretches into the stars.

Lovely AU that makes me want a soulmate in space.

With My Feet Toward the Stars (let me remember you as you were when you existed) by kariye – At age five, Spock informs his mother that it is illogical to wish him “sweet dreams” at bedtime because Vulcans do not dream. “Oh, Spock,” she says.

This fic is a work of LITERATURE.

To Be Wed by ThereBeWhalesHere – "With a human ruling alongside King Sarek, it makes sense that they would want a Vulcan to rule alongside you. Look on the bright side. At least it’s not Sybok.�� Prince S'chn T'gai Spock and Crown Prince Sam Kirk are pushed by their families into an awkward courtship, sure to become an awkward marriage. Meanwhile, the younger Terran prince just wants to make sure his future brother-in-law feels comfortable in his new home. But unfortunately for Jim, the road to hopeless, unrequited love is paved with good intentions.

Really lovely Royalty AU that pulls a lot on TOS.

And I know you’re a Disco person as we all should be so:

Hope by khallucifer – Spock has carried this secret for so long–too long. Finally, he breaks down, and Jim is there to pick up the pieces.

But In Ourselves by ThereBeWhalesHere – Spock has been retreating into his art to make sense of the Red Angel’s visions. Fic Recs

An incomplete list of Star Trek TOS/AOS fics I recommend.

Literally anything by ThereBeWhalesHere. She’s written such fan favorites as Sha Ka Ree, Refuge, and To Be Wed. (My personal favorite out of those is Refuge, though Sha Ka Ree is better known.) Mostly Spirk works with a touch of Tilly/Michael, T’Pura, and Chahura. Mix of TOS and AOS.

Magpie by waldorph - Spirk, AOS - I’d describe this one as an absolute gut-punch. AU where Spock and Jim meet when they’re 7 and 6, respectively. Chaos ensues, of the heavy-hitting and emotionally wrenching varieties, as they grow up. Note: I forget if this includes any underage content or not?? I honestly can’t remember... I’m usually one to avoid underage content like the plague, but this one came highly recommended by an IRL friend, and it did not disappoint. Waldorph is also a fantastic writer with a lot of great fics worth reading.

the ship in port is the safer one by KiaraSayre - Gen, AOS - Otherwise known as "the toilet paper mutiny fic.” It’s a hoot and a holler, in a serious way. Full of friendship goodness. Jim learns on the fly how to be a real captain, and how to deal with all the less-than-glamorous garbage that comes with it.

Tick-Tock and Fizzbin by entrenous - Spirk, TOS - OMS fluff. So fluffy. So fluffy, I about died. One of my all-time favorites. Sulu gives Kirk and Spock a unicorn dog puppy as a housewarming gift, but Spock’s not really keen on having a pet. Kirk, on the other hand, really wants a dog. (Full of positive reinforcement pet training techniques! Hooray!)

Phoenix by museaway - Spirk, TOS - OMS. Less fluff, more plot and angst. Misunderstandings, resolutions, problems solved... and appropriately dramatic hospital bedside confessions. Very nicely understated, for all it’s actually dramatic? If that makes sense? Just an overall well-done trilogy.

Insontis by KCS - Gen, TOS - THE CUTEST THING I’VE EVER READ. Kidfic (and I’m CRAZY picky about kidfic), and mostly cracky, but in a way that’s just *Pacha meme face* mmmmm. It even gets pretty serious at times. Jim volunteers to get turned into a tiny infant, and the Enterprise crew has to raise him. He ages every time he learns a valuable life lesson. Full of all the friendship feels.

Without Words by plaidshirtjimkirk - Spirk, TOS - You want shippy goodness? Here it is. Spock’s never been on a date. Jim decides to remedy that, and try to convey to Spock what he can’t seem to articulate with words. Plaidshirtjimkirk has tons of great stuff worth reading, but this one is my favorite out of their works.

The World Well Lost by annaknitsspock - Spirk, AOS - Read the warnings. There are additional triggers you may want to know about before reading this work. But it’s so good: Spock and Jim are on Tarsus IV as kids. Then a lot of stuff happens... Hard-hitting and full of Jim being self-sacrificing for the good of his t’hy’la.

Take Refuge in What You Know by CorpusInvictus - Spirk, AOS - Spock has extreme agoraphobia. Jim just wants to get to know his enigmatic neighbor. Also healthy doses of Joanna McCoy, who is an absolute treasure in this fic. All the bonus points ever for this fic for appropriate patience dealing with mental issues.

Of Socks and Spocks by gentleau - Spirk, TOS - Spock tries to be a better partner to Jim, and takes the advice of a few crew members in an attempt to show his regard for Jim. This leads to some misunderstandings. Insecure!Spock, but there’s a happy ending.

Those are the big ones, anyway! I might have a few others squirreled away in my fanfic tag.

alright there are only 27 minutes left of fanfic appreciation day here but gosh dang it I’m gonna do a fic rec post too GO GO GO

Fisherman’s Knot by @scribefindegil (Gravity Falls): this fic. this fic is the first GF fic I remember ever reading and it set the standard so high and it still means so much to me. its depiction of depression is so vivid and real it can be hard to read, but that only makes the heartfelt promise that it can get better so powerful. anyway this fic helped me deal with my own depression and also makes me want to cry at all sea shanties forever

In Search of Antidotes by azhdarchidaen (Gravity Falls): the 1800s Jekyll and Hyde-styled Mystery Trio AU you didn’t know you needed until just now. Bill is terrifying, Stan is stubborn and just the right kind of gritty, Ford faints dramatically, it’s all there.

An Outreached Hand by @dubsdeedubs (Ghost Trick/Gravity Falls): EXCUSE ME a Ghost Trick-Gravity Falls crossover? YOU MAD GENIUS. seriously this is the last thing I ever expected to happen but good gosh does it have me hooked. you don’t even need to have played Ghost Trick to read it, which is quite a trick considering how hard Ghost Trick is to explain.

Solivagant by penhaligon (Breath of the Wild): an absolutely beautiful second-person take on the game that gorgeously draws out the achingly lonely feeling of traveling through an empty Hyrule, and really delves into Link’s struggle to regain his strength. sadly there’s only three chapters but I live in hope that one day there will be more.

Equilibrium by PSW (Star Trek: TOS): listen I have read a lot of Star Trek novels and I’m here to tell you that this fic is the best Star Trek novel I’ve ever read. the triumvirate bonds (and suffers), Bones gets to be absolutely kickass awesome, it will have you on the edge of your seat for chapter after chapter, and it feels amazingly true to the series but also takes the time to delve into the characters’ emotions and reactions in a way that TOS never really did but should have. basically it’s the TOS novel I always truly wanted.

Eleutherophobia by SoloMoon (Animorphs): a series of fics set in an AU where Tom survived the war, written by someone who seriously, seriously gets Animorphs. it tackles the awful mess everyone’s in after the war and pulls no punches about it, but the AU allows just enough of a sense of hope to keep you going; it’s realistic, it hurts, but it’s not crushingly bleak.

Boy With A Scar by dirgewithoutmusic (Harry Potter): I recommend this--a series of AU oneshots--because it’s personally my favorite but oh my god absolutely everything this author does is amazing, seriously their Star Wars fics broke me up inside and I’m not even a Star Wars fan. actually while I’m here I also can’t not recommend this series about the female characters of Harry Potter which gives them their due in a way Rowling never really did. and they also wrote some Narnia fics--look everything they’ve done is heartbreaking and beautiful and makes me want to cry and feel things and JUST GO READ IT ALREADY
