You weren’t exactly sure what brought you here, but you couldn’t exactly complain about your current situation. It was just… weird.

“…..How have I not fired you yet.” Azul hissed, and despite not being able to see him very clearly from where you were, you could imagine his face, covered with a stubborn flush and scowling.

Floyd giggled, a raspy sound that you could practically feel as it run through the air. “This ain’t so bad! Right, Crabby?”

Ace just sighed, exhaustion seeping into his voice, and you could only imagine the headache he must have by now.

“I’d agree with Floyd,” Jade chimed in. “I quite like our current situation, Azul. And the prefect doesn’t seem to mind either.”

“It’s not.. bad..?”

You weren’t lying- It wasn’t like you were opposed to the current situation. You’d been chatting idly with Jade and Azul in their reserved booth inside the lounge, when a certain Floyd Leech came running at you, dragging Ace with him, which had somehow led you to where you were now.

You were laying in the booth up against Ace’s chest, Jade next to you playing with strands of your hair absentmindedly. Azul was cuddled up in your lap, undoubtedly enjoying it much more than he’d like to admit, and Floyd was sprawled out next to you in a position that was difficult to describe, in perfect Floyd fashion.

“C’mon, Azul! This ain’t bad at all!”

There was an annoyed grumble from your lap, and you found yourself struggling to resist a sudden urge to pet him. “…It’s fine.” He huffed, voice quiet and face flushed from what you could tell.

Jade giggled, and glanced up behind you to where Ace lay. “You’re quiet. Don’t tell me you’re opposed to all this?”

“No,” He quipped, a certainly annoyed edge to his voice. “I’m ‘opposed’ to the fact that Floyd fucking pulled me over here by the shirt collar.”

Floyd laughed again, and you could feel the noise resounding off of you. “You’re fine, Crabby.”

“Am not! It’s a wonder you haven’t killed me by now- you know I’m not a basketball, right!?”

Floyd tilted his head in an almost confused manner, and now it was your turn to burst out with laughter.

There was a rustling near you, and you glanced to your side to find Jade offering his blazer to you.

“It’s been a long day everyone, and the lounge is closed for now- Let’s all indulge in a little nap, yes?”

Ace let out another sigh, although this time much more content. “Fuck yeah it’s been a long day. I don’t care if y’all stay up, i’m sleeping whether or not you guys like it.”

Azul mumbled something of an agreement, voice still shy, although his blush was beginning to subside. You glanced to your other side again, and Floyd was already asleep by some miracle.

“Does he usually—“

“Every single night.” Jade said, one of his rarely more sincere smiles on his face. It wasn’t long until soft snores came from Ace, and Jade’s hand slowed it’s movements through your hair. It wasn’t long until you found yourself drifting off too, and once you had, it was the best sleep of your life.

i’ve been wondering how did you go about characterizing Nanako and Mimiko?

i’m slowly going through your jujutsu kaisen fanfics, michikatsu has my heart, and I’m surprised how well you wrote nanako and mimiko in exponential growth so far.

were some of it headcannon? or did you come to those characterization conclusions based on what was shown in the manga?

Thank you for your nice words about my fanfics. Nanako and Mimiko were a pretty big reason for why I started wanting to write fanfic of jujutsu kaisen, because number one Geto's family is the most interesting thing about him as a character and how he contrasts with Gojo, and number two they're crimminally underutilized in canon. I also found their deaths unnecessarily gratuitous. It was a start of a long series of Gege wasting female characters.

Which is why I wanted to explore them more in fic, and also just explore the idea of Geto's found family. As for where I came up with the idea for their characters, I'll answer below the cut.

There were enough hints in canon about Nanako and Mimiko's cursed techniques that I was able to extrapolate what each of them did, voodoo dolls that force others to commit suicide and cursed photography. I also took a little inspiration from their character designs, Mimiko is obviously meant to be the dark / gloomy one, whereas Nanako dresses like a Gyaru. The fact that they're always near each other / clutching each other hints to a bit of a codependent relationship as well.

However, the rest of their characterization I basically had to make up. The biggest source of inspiration for them comes from Durara!! which is another urban fantasy series by Ryoga Narita, which deals with a bunch of supernatural creatures like dullahans, and vampires existing in an urban setting. I draw a lot of inspiration from Durarara!! because a big thing that Ryoga Narita writes well is having loads and loads of characters share screen time in a bigger story which is something I want to accomplish for Jujutsu Kaisen and it's huge cast. Especially since the aim of my fanfic series is to focus the spotlight more on the minor characters as opposed to the main trio.

Ryoga Narita is pretty famous for his eccentric characters, all of them are crazy in their own special way. One of the ways he manages to balance so many characters is each of them kind of has a gimmick or central concept they're based around. Mimiko and Nanako take a lot of inspiration from Izaya's little sisters, Mairu and Kurui.

Mairu and Kurui are based around the trop of "twins having opposite personalities", but it's a parody of that trope because they're doing it on purpose. Basically, the story is that when they were younger their older brother Izaya emotionally abused them by saying that if they were twins and the same person one of them should kill themselves because they had an extra. (Izaya is a lovely person by the way). They wanted to please their brother, so they decided to write all their personality traits down on a list and then divide them equally. Their theory is that by balancing out their strengths and weaknesses between each other they create the "ultimate human being."

Kurui decided to be the quiet one who's eccentric at school, like a Rei Ayanami expy, she wears her gym clothes to the middle of class and doesn't socialize with anoyone. Mairu decided to be the loud, attention hungry, eccentric one. She screams to everyone the first day of class that she's bisexual and willing to date multiple partners. When a bunch of girls try to bully her, she literally almost forces them to swallow thumb tacks. Kurui barely talks, and Mairu does all the speaking for her.

The twist is that they're intentionally doing that, it's an act for both of them. When they're texting people, or when they're in an online chatroom Kurui becomes the talkative one and writes in paragraphs, while Mairu gives one word responses. Which suggests that at any time they could just swap personalities. Both of them also consider themselves the same person, they want to date the same guys, and if they disagree on anything they have mental breakdowns.

So Nanako and Mimiko share the same central concept, but the thing is while I love Kurui and Mairu and their character concept is excellent they literally have no character development in the story they are in. They're never challenged over the fact that they are super codependent and can't exist without each other. They never really grow past the trauma of the emotional abuse that their brother inflcited on them. It seems like a subversion of the "twins with the same personalities" trope at first, but then they don't really go anywhere with it. Also, there's a lot of icky twin incest subtext between the two of them. They just legit kiss once because light novels are gross sometimes.

The closest the two of them get to character development is their relationship is the friendship both of them make with Aoba Kuronuma.

Aoba is a first year student introduced in the second half of the story, he's basically a foil for their older brother Izaya. He's like an Izaya who's less of a villain because he's younger and capable of making friends. A lot of his positive character traits come out in his relationship with the twins, because while he's a selfish user of people he tends to be really selfless and protective when it comes to them.

This could have been a jumping board for having the twins have separate identities, because they are both friends with him, but Aoba has romantic feelings for Kurui. However, they do the twin incest thing again because the first time Kurui isses Aoba, Mairu is like "I have to kiss everyone my sister kisses" and then kisses him immediately afterwards and says it's an indirect kiss with Mairu.

There's a sequel to Durarara! called, Durarara! SH!. The trio shows up in that novel, but the original plan for that series was to make Aoba the main character with the Kurui and Mairu as the other parts of the main trio. However, that was scrapped in favor of three new characters which I thought was a pretty big waste of their potential.

A lot of the things I wanted to see in the Aoba / Kurui / Mairu trio, I put into Exponential Growth for the Junpei / Mimiko / Nanako dynamic. Basically the whole idea that after meeting Junpei, Mimiko and Nanako's relationship can't remain the same because it used to be their whole world was just the two of them but there's suddenly this third person their own age they both want to socialize with. Also, the two of them can't both date him so he forces them to actually act like individuals.

My trajectory with Nanako and Mimiko comes from what I wanted from Kurui and Mairu which is this deconstruction of the idea that they're the same person, by separating them and forcing them to learn to be their own people. Also, the sheer amount of distress it would cause a pair of twins this codependent to be forced to separate and live on their own. Because they're at that time in adolescence where they're going through some major changes in personality so the coping mechanism that worked for them as kids is starting to break down.

The other major inspiration for them is Maki and Mai. The basic premise is that they have the opposite relationship that Maki and Mai do, but it's just as unhealthy. Maki and Mai are permanently separated from their childhood closeness, because Maki always pushes Mai away. Maki needs to assert herself as an individual. However, this need is so strong that she doesn't think she can have any kind of relationship because she views it as a chain dragging her down.

Whereas, Mimiko and Nanako have been clinging to each other since childhood. They have the relationship that Mai basically WANTS to have with Maki. However, Maki thinks they're utterly pathetic because they can't survive on their own and are entirely dependent on each other. Which is Maki's unhealthy and toxic ideal of strength. At the same time, Mimiko and Nanako think that Maki just plain hates Mai. They can't imagine a sister ever completely ignoring another sister and pushing her out of her life because they value family more than anything else. As unhealthy as they are, at least Mimiko and Nanako make it clear they both love each other.

There's also another foiling point where they are both equally bad at communication with one another. Mimiko and Nanako claim they're the same person, and share the same thoughts on everything but Mimiko is constantly bullied by Nanako. Nanako's extremely bossy and domineering in the relationship. However, it's enabled by Mimiko who's been depending on Nanako too much over the years to make all the decisions for them. They also talk a lot but rarely talk about their true feelings with one another and when they start to it turns into an argument.

On the other hand, Maki and Mai could probably clear up a lot of tension between them with ONE HONEST CONVERSATION, but neither of them are willing to do that.

durarara!! au where simon makes izaya take on the raira trio (and saki) for like an internship (after punching him) so instead of the rest of the series being a drawn out gang war, it ends up being a high-stakes dark urban fantasy version of the office.

-namie is still there, and she and mikado have bi-hourly death glare matches

-anri continues trying to slash izaya, coming up with more and more complex ways to get him, and ultimately recruiting mairu and kururi into her “shank the twink” schemes

-masaomi still flirts with anri. and sometimes namie. and also mikado. no amount of pointing out that saki is literally right there will get him to stop, and pointing her out too much usually makes her start flirting too

-initially, only namie, izaya, and saki are allowed to touch the Evil Master Plan Chessboard, but izaya and saki both lose privileges (izaya for one too many fires, and saki for reasons no one is comfortable discussing)

-izaya still gets shanked by yodogiri but anri doesn’t try to slash him while he’s in the hospital bc she’s way too nice. manami very much does try, and izaya constantly taunts them both about it

-manami joins anri and the twins in the “slash a bitch” team

-mikado and saki seem to be having a subtle contest of who can be more unsettlingly adorable

-if izaya, mikado, and saki are all in a room together, someone else has to be there with them. otherwise that room will soon be on fire.

-if izaya, mikado, saki, and the twins are all in a room together, then that room is probably already on fire.

-saki is the only person there who genuinely likes izaya. this does not stop her from betraying him at the drop of a hat if someone she cares about is in danger. or if it’s just kinda funny.

-izaya has to find a better hiding spot for celty’s head and sulks bc now he can’t prance around his office monologuing about valhalla with it. this has convinced namie that there may in fact be some sort of benevolent deity.

-sometimes mikage shows up. the raira trio spends the better part of several months trying to figure out if izaya is sleeping with her or namie. this comes to a conclusion when they walk in on namie and mikage making out.

-during shizuo and izaya’s pointless death matches, the whole office shows up to cheer him on. and by him i mean shizuo.

-mikado eventually starts timing izaya’s Evil Monologues

-anri has yakuza immunity bc absolutely no one is stupid enough to piss off akabayashi. she ends up acting as a spy for the awakusu-kai but unfortunately most of what she has to report is “yes orihara is still insane. no i don’t think he’s been doing any drugs but honestly that’s actually even more depressing he’s just Like That”

-izaya does still do his Evil Plans but he has to be even more careful and every now and then one of the kids gets in trouble and he ends up getting forced to help out

-the recruitment process: “will this be a paid internship?” “of course this is a paid internship, i’m not a monster”

-izaya’s crush on shinra gets increasingly obvious and somehow absolutely nobody notices

-every single one of izaya’s attempts at a hot pot party fail miserably

Izaya’s main base of operations is within Inazuma City, but he also carries a large network in Ritou City and a bit on all of the islands

Still works as an informant, and is one of the best at what he does. Is usually the go-to; infamous for it

As canon, Izaya has no interest in trying to hold onto a moral code. He follows his own whims and ideas and plans, and most of what he does is simply to see and study a reaction. All due to his utmost love for humanity.

Despite being gifted a vision and having Inazuma’s own archon so present, he carries a heavy disbelief / indifference towards the gods. He doesn’t care about them and their ideals --- they aren’t nearly as nuanced or interesting as the mortals they claim to reign over. ( And besides --- they prove to still be just as gullible and easy to use. )

Was a huge component in how the Fatui was able to make their way into the region and secretly gain such a fist over things: hey -- why not? they paid good money and they kept things dreadfully entertaining for the price of key information

While he’s infamous in the right circle for his work, he knows how to keep himself hidden. You can’t find him by normal means, no matter how hard you search the city.

At the end of the Vision Hunt Decree, Izaya made his way out of Inazuma and towards Liyue to continue his work. What else was there to do now that the biggest catalyst for fun and chaos was over?

Is keeping an eye and ear open for the traveler and their journey ... he’d love to see what other things they tangle themselves.

The Fatui is still his number one customers -- but he also sells information to treasure hoarders, merchants, and whoever can name the right price.

i just got my period and i am n o t having it and yknow what i want. i want someone to give me blankets and hot chocolate and tea and hsdksjdl. Also the mysmes brainrot is real so why not combine the two !! its a bit short today but im tired so whatcha gonna do

Although he ultimately struggled to express it sometimes, Seeing you all bundled up on the couch, face scrunched up in discomfort, he could feel his own mood souring. You had your nose buried in whatever manga you’d wrapped yourself up in this time, but your focus was all over the place with how much your abdomen hurt. There was no way to think straight through the pain, no matter how much you tried to ignore it, and it bothered him almost as much as it bothered you. It had been a bit since he had slipped out through the entryway with a promise to return soon, with the grin on his face that only meant he was up to something, but you still couldn’t bring yourself to pay too much mind to it.

After about a half hour of you sitting on the couch, stomach aching and barely even reading your book anymore, the jingle from the doorway ensuring your boyfriends return had you directing your gaze to the hallway that led to the door, where said red-haired boy poked his head around the corner, watching you for a reaction.

“Seven…?” You asked, confusion evident on your face as you stared at him, manga now forgotten as it lay abandoned at your side.

He smiled at you, eyes closed while he beamed. “I got you a couple things~” He said, reaching out a hand to showcase the full shopping bag that dangled from his arm.

“Eh--? Why did you--”

He strode over to you, sitting down on the floor next to the couch you sat on as he shushed you, before turning to open the bag. He seemed rather proud of himself as he pulled it open, reaching in and handing you a freshly bought, fluffy blanket in your favorite color, offering it to you with the cutest grin on his face.

“I got you a better blanket, some extra supplies, some hot chocolate…” As he spoke, he laid each item out in a pile, eyeing you from time to time to make sure you were watching him and his little performance. “I got you a heating pad too, Jaehee mentioned once that those are useful. Do you want me to make you the hot chocolate now, or wait a bit?”

You stared at him, completely still as you watched him stare right back, puppy dog eyes on full display. “W- What is… Why……?”

He grinned at you as if it was obvious. Leave it to Seven to make you feel stupid even on your period. “You looked uncomfy, so I wanted to help~ Is that okay?”

Well, how are you meant to say no to that?

Halloween Ambush

“Uncle Shiki!” The high pitched giggle of a certain Awakusu princess preceded her presence in his office by seconds, followed by two more young voices in near tandem, one boisterous and the other reserved.

“Uncle Shiki~”

“Uncle.”

He watched the Orihara twins enter on the heels of Akane, the three of them dressed very oddly. He raised a brow as he studied the girls, taking in the oversized dress shirts and pants the twins were wearing that looked like they had been stolen from Izaya's closet. Akane was wearing a kimono that also looked like it had been pilfered and he wondered if Kyouko was aware of the theft yet. All three had added the accessories of cat ears and tails to their outfits. Akane had white and the twins were wearing white and black mixed.

“Akane, Mairu, Kururi. To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?”

“We're here to recruit you!” Akane announced excitedly.

“Recruit.” Kururi repeated with a slight smile.

“For our very important Halloween project.” Mairu added.

“Important.” Kururi echoed with wide, serious eyes.

Halloween. That would explain the outfits. “I see. And what is this important project?”

“We have decided to start our own secret clan.” Akane announced. “We already recruited Uncle Akabayashi.”

“Oh? Is he here too?”

“We sent him on a special mission to recruit Uncle Aozaki.”

“Ah. Secret clan is it?” All three girls nodded excitedly, looking at Shiki expectantly. He arched a brow then sighed. “And what is this secret clan called?” He asked, following their prompts.

“We're the Nyakuza!” Akane announced proudly while Mairu and Kururi giggled behind her.

“The… Nyakuza?” Shiki repeated in amusement.

“Super secret joint alliance between the Awamewsu and Mewrihara clans.” Mairu piped up.

“Revomewtion.” Kururi followed.

“Well then. And what are the goals of the Nyakuza?”

“To acquire all the fish!” Akane declared.

“Tuna.” Kururi added.

“Not just any tuna.” Mairu added. “Bluefin!”

Shiki raised his brow, sensing the influence of a certain stray cat in this escapade. Izaya had been talking about Halloween costumes the other day but Shiki had dismissed the idea outright.

“And who is the head of the clan?” He asked which led to the twins giggling.

“Our onyabun is Uncle Izaya.” Akane announced. “But I said he was too young to be onyabun. So if you join the nyazuka, Uncle Shiki, you can be our onyabun.” Akane gave him a hopeful look, drawing another sigh from him.

“Izaya.” The call of the raven’s name was answered by the soft jingle of a bell as Izaya peered around the edge of the doorframe, black cat ears poking up out of his hair.

“Yes, Harunya?” He replied with a mischievous smirk.

“What are you doing?”

“Building a nyarmy.” He replied. “Although they aren't very loyal.” All three girls giggled at this.

“Please join the Nyakuza, Uncle.” Akane gave him wide, pleading eyes. “We need more Awamewsus.”

“What am I expected to do if I join?” Shiki asked, eyeing the raven with amusement.

“You get to boss Iza-nii around!” Mairu declared.

“Already does.” Kururi countered her sister, giving Shiki a faint smile.

“You just have to become a cat, Uncle.” Akane explained. “After that you don't have to do anything at all.” Shiki sighed, watching Izaya saunter up to him, noting that the soft jingle of the bell came from a collar around his neck. How fitting.

“And how does one become a cat?” Akane pulled out a pair of tiger striped cat ears and held them out to him.

“Uncle Izaya picked them out specially for you.” Akane revealed causing Izaya to roll his eyes.

“You weren't supposed to reveal that part.” Izaya said with a long-suffering sigh. Shiki took the ears from Akane and put them on.

“Yay!” All three girls cheered.

“Now Iza-nii can't boss us around!” Mairu added.

“Brother lost.” Kururi added.

Izaya gave his sisters a mock-wounded look.

“Betrayed by my own family.”

“Sorry Uncle Izaya but Uncle Shiki is onyabun now. You have to listen to him.” Akane replied with a giggle. ”Now we need to find Uncle Akabayashi and find out if he succeeded.”

“Yes! More recruits!” Mairu exclaimed and grabbed the other girls hands.

“Aoneko and Akaneko.” Kururi added as Mairu tugged them out of the room.

“Tiger print looks good on you.” Izaya observed with a grin.

“That collar looks good on you.” Shiki returned, fixing his gaze on the raven now that the girls were gone. “Did it come with a leash?”

“Cats don't like leashes, Haruya.” Izaya responded, wrinkling his nose though his eyes shone with amusement. Shiki reached up and hooked a finger through the ring the bell was attached to, tugging Izaya's head down.

“Even more reason to put a leash on you. Wouldn't want you to wander off and start any more costume revolutions.” Izaya leaned in, purring.

“Such a cruel oyabun.”

“Says the sneaky upstart who tried to use children against me.” Izaya's smirk widened.

“Succeeded.” He replied, tugging on one of Shiki’s tiger ears.

“I hope this small victory was worth it.” Shiki replied ominously, tugging on the collar. Izaya shivered at Shiki's tone.

“Of course it was…”
