Most people know Stede and Ed are both based on real people.

Less people know that Stede Bonnet was hung to death in December 1718 and Edward Teach was killed in battle with sailors November 1718.

And S1 is set in 1717.

Signal swivel gun from the Queen Anne’s Revenge, before 1717

This small bronze gun is attached to a wrought iron yoke and would have been mounted on the cap rail, or the timber at the very top of the hull. Such a small gun would do very minor damage as a weapon and was instead intended to signal or salute other members of the fleet, passing ships, or people on land. It is probably British and manufactured around 1700. The bore is too small to fire the smallest of iron cannon balls and may not have been used to fire projectiles.

On or about this day in history, in the year 1717, the pirate sloop Revenge attacked and robbed the sloop Betty.

Led by Edward Teach and using Stede Bonnet’s resources, the pirates took “Certain Pypes of Medera Wine and other Goods and Merchandise” from the Betty before drilling holes in the hull and sinking her.
