I don’t think people understand how insane it is that 80% of all the people in the world suffering from catastrophic hunger are in Gaza (A strip of land 25 miles (40 kilometers) long 7 miles (11 kilometers) wide.) There is an estimated 2.1 million people in the Gaza Strip and an estimated 8 billion people in the entire world think about that.

leviathan of the cosmos
– tales of the voracity pathstrider
✎𓂃 something unto death as the respawning boss enemy, i haven’t finished 2.1 yet
Tumblr media
when aventurine brings up traveling to the reverie hotel in the dreamscape alone, your eyes narrow ever so slightly and you take a step towards him. though you do truly worry for him, you can’t deny that you also want to take a peek at the off-limits-to-visitors area for yourself, too.
he’s been keeping you away from conflict, away from the dangerous games he plays on the daily, but you want to know. you want to see all that he is, his feats and evils, not just what he decides to show you. and if it means following him into the dreamscape, you won’t shy away from your quest of knowledge.
he doesn’t want you to enter the dreamscape reverie with him, but you’re very, very stubborn
“it’s dangerous for you,” he says, giving you the most serious look you’ve ever seen on him, like he’s genuinely concerned (he is)
you tilt your head. even without saying anything, he knows what you’re trying to say – you don’t understand where he’s coming from
he tries to explain, boy, he’s trying so hard to explain to you why exactly it’s a bad idea, but he feels like he’s talking to a wall
are you even listening? hello?
he can’t see your expression because your scarf is in the way, and your eyes betray nothing
for as much as he loves talking at you, this is the one time he wants you to give him a response
“you’re strong enough.” a statement, not a question, because this man is one of the ten stonehearts, and you know he has more power than he appears to have
well, yes. but, to be honest, he isn’t confident in his ability to protect you
death is a dangerous entity, and even if he’s certain he can hold his own against it…
what if it decides that you are its next target? you, who is so precious and lovely?
he doesn’t want to run the risk. he likes having you around, both as a friend and as a secretary, and the last thing he wants is to lose you
but you’re adamant. “there’s nothing to worry about,” you say, oblivious to all the worries running miles per second in his head
he feels like if he didn’t let you tag along, you’d just follow him anyway and that would be even worse
aventurine thinks he knows you well, perhaps even better than yourself, but turns out he’s just delusional. you’re so timid, so awkward, and when you’ve warmed up to him you’re still silent and brooding most of the time, how could he have known that you have so many cards hidden up your sleeve?
he’s just dealt with a few scattered crew from the dreamjolt troupe, but he might’ve made a little too much noise when he whacked the televisions
it feels like the entire floor’s enemies are attracted by the noise, even memory zone memes are showing up
he glances towards you, who’s doing a really good job at staying out of his way and avoiding attacks
way better than he expected
you don’t seem afraid, either. he can tell that you’re relaxed from your body language
one thing he’s worried about, though, is eventually attracting death
because that’s the one thing he’ll try his best to protect you from, but he isn’t certain if he can
he doesn’t think you can fight, and your lack of inclination towards conflict only reinforced that belief
sure, you’re built like a fortress and you’re intimidating, but he soon found out that you’re a big softie inside
which, even more unlikely that you can fight. you just feel so… vanilla
you feel like the type who’d try to de-escalate a situation that could otherwise be easily solved with fists
even if you look like your punches would send people into orbit, it's just so out of your character
he likes that about you, really, but sometimes he wished you have some combat skills
when death inevitably appears, aventurine’s heart drops. it completely ignores him and heads straight for you – perhaps it knows who’s stronger or weaker – its wing rearing back as it coils around you, picking you up by your scarf, and –
he goes pale. he immediately acts, invoking qlipoth’s protection
but he knows how swift death is, and how easily it will lay its claws upon you and take you from him
the shield he casts on you is easily broken in one, two, three slashes
does death penetrate armor? it doesn’t quite make sense – the kind of shield he confers should not have been so easily broken!
before he could even do anything, before he could even tell you how much he treasured you…
you’ll be gone, and he’ll be all alone again
he hates that. and you know he hates that, but what could either of you do?
for as far as he’s come, he’s still powerless to protect the ones he hold dear
he tries, he really does, but his attacks won’t reach death in time, nor will his shield reach you in time
it’s dead set on taking your life, and it’s going to succeed
damn it, he should’ve just forced you to stay in the reverie in reality, or the golden hour, or something
he’d take your annoyance over watching your symbolic “death” any day
he reaches for you – in a fit of desperation, he tries to grab onto you, your scarf, anything
you blink, watching as death’s claws withdraw, and as it swings its blade-laden scythe wing towards you. you seem shocked, but you close your eyes as you welcome the darkness.
the darkness known as your leviathan.
your white scarf sits perfectly around your neck, and your nose is still comfortably buried in the fabric
but there’s no mistaking it; it’s yours
the serpent emerging from the ends of your scarf, who wrapped around the monster known as something unto death, whose translucent body wound around it until it is no longer visible, who made it disappear…
it obeys you, holy shit, that creature obeys you
but you’ve always seemed so harmless, so sweet, so, so… so innocent
how could someone like you harbor something so terrifying?
yet here you are, swallowing the memetic entity with a gulp, like you’re simply swallowing down your food
you’re eating – no, you’ve eaten death
your leviathan settles into your scarf again, its form dissipating as if it had never existed at all
so simply, so effortlessly, disposing of it as if it’s naught but a mere worm
aventurine stares, at where death once loomed, and then at you, who looks completely fine. he stammers your name, and for the first time, he feels a primal fear in him. it’s different to the fear of uncertainty, of whether or not he’ll still be alive tomorrow, or of being left behind again. it’s a fear more powerful, a fear stemming from coming face to face with someone perhaps even more dangerous than everyone he’s encountered on penacony. the fear of prey before the apex predator on the food chain.
his gentle giant of a secretary all of a sudden doesn’t seem so gentle anymore
he can’t really tell what exactly it is hiding in your scarf, but he has an inkling
before he can make a guess, you interrupt his line of thinking
“bleh…” you cringe in disgust, your face scrunching up as you stumble to find refuge on a nearby couch
never mind, he'll take that back
honestly, you don’t look like someone to be afraid of right now
you look like you’re about to collapse, with how pale you’re getting and how you’re almost retching up your lunch behind your scarf
which you are. the only thing stopping you is the physical aspect of being unable to
he pushes his fear aside, and finds it surprising easy to do so
in fact, it’s so easy that he could almost find your reaction hilarious
if you didn't look like you're three seconds away from keeling over
“you, you didn’t just–” he approaches you slowly, kneeling down by your side, “aeons, you look sick.”
you want to give him a reply, but the sheer flavor of the meme you just swallowed makes you so queasy that you think you might puke the moment you try to speak
his hands slowly reach up to hold your face, “will you be okay?” he asks, quiet and careful
you nod, relaxing into his touch, and he can feel you turn to lean against his palm even through the fabric that obfuscates your face
how are you still so adorable when you’ve just consumed the entirety of death?
you’ve never revealed much about yourself, and you’ve been the biggest mystery aventurine has been itching to solve. but at this stage, he isn’t too sure if he wants to find out anymore. you, your path, your abilities… you’ve been hiding them all, under that guise of innocence.
then again, he’s the one who made assumptions and decided to keep you away from conflict
he still feels cheated, just with no one but himself to blame
he wants to believe that you’ve been genuine with him! that your personality, at least, isn’t fake
you’re doing a really good job at reassuring him
well, maybe because you’re experiencing indigestion on a couch in the dreamscape after eating something that looks decidedly inedible
it doesn’t feel like you’re lying to him at all, with the way you’re behaving
when the nausea goes away just enough for you to speak, the first thing you say is a string of curses
and “i really hope i don’t get food poisoning”
it gets silent very quickly, and you two stare at each other
“i… i don’t think food poisoning is what you should be worried about right now,” he manages to say, suppressing the urge to just chuckle, because this is his confirmation that you’re still his favorite secretary
it takes you a while before you let out a very, very quiet mumble of “please don’t fire me.”
aventurine has never expected that to come out of your mouth. “what? why would i fire you over something like this?” he raises a brow, and he’s just as relieved as you are when your shoulders sagged. “i’m just glad you’re okay…”
he tries to lift you up, and you give him an a+ for effort, even if he ends up failing. you lean onto him, letting him carry half of your weight while you try to stand.
“c’mon, let’s get you out of here. you need to rest,” aventurine says, in the most happy, truly grateful way you’ve ever heard him speak. “but, after that? you have a lot of explaining to do.”

Proportionality in war does not mean what so many of you seem to think it means.
Tumblr media
Proportionality in war doesn't mean that an army fighting another military force is standing with their hand on a stopper, counting the dead and waiting for the moment when the number on both sides is equal. Not a single war in history has been fought like that, and it is an insane double standard, that people talk about Israel as if this is how it's meant to fight. In WWII, there were way more German civilian fatalities than there were American or British ones, and NO ONE says the Americans and British carried out a genocide of the Germans, just because the impact on the civilian populations was dissimilar. No one looks at that war and says, "The allies should have totally stopped before defeating the Nazis, once the number of German civilians killed was bigger than their own."
(and all this holds true whether we're talking about a regular army fighting another, such as in most wars, or whether it's this case, where we see Israel facing in this war in Gaza a terrorist organization, that is made up of tens of thousands of armed fighters, with proper military training, backed by tens of thousands of rockets, using even more people as human shields, booby trapping entire residential areas, digging an entire underground network of tunnels and bunkers stretching for miles, dedicated solely to terrorism, and having collaborators from other terrorist organizations in that territory and outside it fighting with them, plus members of that terrorist organization attacking from outside the war zone)
Proportionality in war means that an army's impact must be proportionate to the size of the threat. Not to the number of casualties, to the size of the threat.
Just like when we talk about the allies' response to the Nazis in WWII, we do take into account more than just how many people actually died in the war the Germans started, we take into account what would have happened, had Nazi Germany been successful in conquering even more countries, or reaching even more Jews to exterminate, as the Nazis planned to (demonstrated by, among other examples, their special death squad geared to kill the Jews in Israel had they managed to occupy it, the pressure they placed on the Japanese to get rid of the Jews living in East Asia under Japanese rule, and the lists of Jews to be arrested first in places the Nazis were planning to occupy, but thankfully failed to, including the UK, the US and Canada).
Since Hamas is an extremist terrorist organization, that has repeatedly stated it targets all Israelis and Jews, and has acted accordingly, that means that when Israel is fighting to dismantle Hamas, the threat it's trying to remove is the one posed to:
9.8 million (as of Dec 2023) people threatened in Israel, Jewish and non-Jewish alike (as demonstrated in action on Oct 7, when Hamas murdered Israeli Muslim Arabs as well, for being affiliated with the Jewish state)
about 8.4 million Jews living outside of Israel and targeted by Hamas (as demonstrated in action when Hamas terrorists were arrested last month for intending to carry out terrorist attacks on Jewish targets in at least 3 European countries)
Every single Gazan who might be killed due to Hamas. As Hamas has gotten Gazan kids killed building its terror tunnels, killed Palestinian kids by recruiting teenagers as terrorists, killed Gazan civilians when using them as human shields, killed Palestinian women and Palestinian queers by allowing (even condoning) "honor killings," killed Gazan protestors, killed Gazans affiliated with opposing political parties, and as Hamas is seemingly hellbent on waging this war to the last Gazan, when they didn't have to start it by attacking Israel on Oct 7, and they could have saved so many of their people by surrendering and ending it, all 2.1 million Gazans can be seen as endangered by Hamas
In total, this would mean that there are currently 20.3 million people in the world directly threatened by the very existence of Hamas.
By fighting Hamas in Gaza, Israel is currently actively defending 20.3 million people!
(obviously, minus the 30,000 Hamas terrorists)
That's before we start counting Palestinians outside of Gaza (because yes, Hamas exists and operates in other areas as well, as I mentioned above, and if it's seen as victorious in Gaza, that will strengthen Hamas outside it, too), or what it would mean for the entire Middle East region, or even for the whole world, if the moderate countries in this area see that the extremist terrorist tactics of Hamas are successful at stopping a democratic state from protecting its people.
THAT is the size of the threat. And THAT is what Israel's war impact is in proportion to.

OH MY GODDD THE NEW TRAILBLAZE MISSION IT’S SO GOOD BUT ALSO NONE OF MY THOUGHTS ARE COHERENT AAAAA
Major spoilers for 2.1 ahead!!!!
So first off to the people that voted for Aventurine and Sunday in this poll how does it feel to be right?
ANYWAY THAT WHOLE ENDING WAS FUCKING INSANEEEE, Aventurine walking INTO the Nihility????? And he might not ever come back???? Acheron showing off the true extent of her emanator powers?????? Gallagher being the twist villain and also somehow in control of Something Unto Death???? What the fuck?!
My brain is a mess right now I’m just rotating all of the story in my brain and a hundred miles a minute. The next stuff is just going to be me word vomiting my reaction to stuff in a vaguely chronological order.
First off I LOVEEE how Aventurine-focused the Trailblaze mission was. I was kind of assuming it would be a 50/50 split between focusing on Acheron and focusing on Aventurine but it seems like they’re saving Acheron’s backstory for 2.2 or 2.3.
The little appearance of Boothill??? And how he immediately threatens violence?????? Just a silly guy I can’t wait for him in 2.2 I wanna see them fight. Also I wonder if Constance is making empty promises because it’s possible.
Back to Aventurine, DAMNNN I knew his backstory would be tragic but it’s even more gut wrenching than I expected. The reference in his achievements too??? ‘What do you want Sibyl?’ ‘I want to die.’ THE PROGRESSION FROM AVENTURINE STICKING WITH THIS UNTIL THE END WHERE EVEN THOUGH HE COULD POSSIBLY DIE FOR REAL YET HE DECIDES FO CONTINUE FORWARD BECAUSE EVEN IF WE’RE BORN TO DIE THERE’S A POINT IN LIVING LIFE AND PREPARING FOR THAT INEVITABILITY???? OH MY GOD.
Sunday’s also a scary dude. Maybe being an emanator does that to people but when he did that Harmony mindfuckery on Aventurine I was almost certain that he was going to die because of that. I was also SO pissed at Ratio for selling Aventurine out only to learn they were actually double crossing SUNDAY was insane. I’m glad he finally got to be angry about Robin’s death towards the end though, most of the downtime between 2.0 and 2.1 has been me wondering ‘man his sister just died why doesn’t he feel more distressed.’
Ngl I’m probably gonna dedicate a whole post to Aventurine in this update because 90% of the time I was playing the quest I was either thirsting over him, internally sobbing for him, thinking he was gonna die, or waiting to get back to his POV.
Gallagher is one hell of an enigma because Sunday implies that he’s made up of different ‘aspects’ of each Family member who’s died over however long the dreamscape deaths have been happening, yet he has a past with Siobhan and apparently knew Mikhail??? Like what the fuck????? How long has this been going on????
(Edit: so the use of ‘enigma’ was NOT a pun, when I played the trailblaze quest someone goofed up and forgot to add the line where Sunday calls Gallagher a follower of The Enigmata. Yeah that’s a pretty big lore drop to forget to add.)
I do wish it was foreshadowed slightly better though because the most we get is him being very vaguely sad about his past and also like two people going ‘who the hell is Gallagher.’
One thing I didn’t expect to happen was for a ‘Sam is Firefly’ reveal. Like I had seen the leaks before (not out of my own will sadly) and kind of expected for it to be a 2.2 reveal. Either way yayyyy Firefly is alive!!!
I’m sad that we didn’t really have an Acheron and Welt team up, or at least that we didn’t see more of it. It was kind of hyped up to be a whole B-plot but turned out to only be a few scenes. I’m not complaining because we get a little teeny bit of Welt characterisation but I’m still sad.
I like how Sparkle kind of just shows up to either be a nuisance or a conveniently timed piece to move the plot forward. It’s very fitting with being a Masked Fool.
There’s a lot more I want to scream about but it’s all Aventurine related and I’m gonna save it for its own dedicated post.
2.1 is so fucking good 2.2 and 2.3 better stick the landing.

— Ending chosen:
tell him the truth
lie for his safety
"¡ay bendito!" he shouted, his hands almost pulling his braids out as he ran his hand on his head. "enough with your bullshit excuses! if it's not true, then what is the truth? tell me." he demanded, infuriated.
"why are you being so difficult?!" [name]'s legs finally gave up, squating down on the floor. physically and mentally exhausted. her hands are pressed on her ears as tears start to flood her lids, unable to control it as she is tired from everything. everything is too much for her right now. too much screaming.
miles sighed, rubbing his nape and looking down at his love. he matched her current height, sitting down in front, he opened his arms. as much as his anger is unbearable, his love for her is much more.
slowly but surely, she crawled her way to him and hugged him dearly. "I would never.." she continued to cry, "i love you... and only you." she sobbed, burying her head in his neck.
"i know." he answered, caressing her shoulder with a sad smile. he regrets what he said. he hates it. he hates every single thing he says, but what can he do? his anxiety is kicking in.
"then why would you say that?!" her voice is wobbly, but the anger is present. she's glaring hard at him. she pulled away from him, but he's still close by.
"because i know when you lie." he said firmly, his head soon drop as he sighed for the nth time for the last hour. "[name], we've been friends for six years and been dating for two years. i know you like the back of my hand."
"if you know me, then you'll know I'll never cheat." the girl's lips are formed into a straight line as her brows frown. the corner of her eyes, as well as nose, are flushed with red from crying.
"i know.. lo sé, mi vida. lo siento.. lo siento." enveloping both of her hands in his, he kissed her knuckles, one by one. "i was losing my mind at that time... please." [i know, my life. I'm sorry.. I'm sorry.]
she enjoyed every single one of his little peaks, "miles... i can't really tell you.."
his palm made contact with her cheek, thumb sweetly catching the liquid droplets. "we tell each other everything, why is this any different?"
her lips are trembling as she tries to hold a sob. "miles..." shaking her head no, she doesn't want to risk it. she loves him too much.
"cariño, por favor.." he kissed her. they both close their eyes in the process. [name] let out a little cry in his mouth before they pulled away. "you know you can tell me anything." [darling, please..]
"i'm just... so scared." she whispered, more tears to fall as the images of miles in her arms because she told him. she knows he's willing to sacrifice everything for her, and she knows he's willing to risk his life for her. just like she does for him every single day. "i can't lose you..."
"no me perderás, hermosa." he kisses her temple before pulling her into an embrace. his mind can't find any situation that will make you break up with him. "i won't let you go, i love you too much." [you won't lose me, beautiful.]
frustrated sigh left her lips as she shook her head. "you don't understand.." She clenched his shirt, his shoulder soaked with her tears from earlier. her face is now dry, as she started to get back to her senses bit by bit. she hates how she can't explain the whole thing.
"then let me understand." he kisses her forehead, holding her close. the guy was met with silence, clicking his tongue, and he rested his head on hers. "amor, sabes que odio pelear contigo... ¿cuál es el propósito de estar juntos cuando no tenemos confianza? ¿eh?" his accent is always calming to you, especially when he talks like this, caressing your shoulder as he speaks. [love, you know I hate fighting with you... what's the point of being together when we don't have trust? hm?]
[name] looked at him with uncertainties, she's hesitating. she's hesitating too much, and he can see it. "take your time. te amo, mamí." he kissed her again. [i love you, mami]
she couldn't help but melt at the old nickname, "yo tambien te amo, papí." miles smiled. he loves that nickname. [i love you too, papi]
it has been a little too over 3 minutes, that miles thought she'll never confess to him about the truth. before she opened her mouth, but words were left on her throat. [name] felt like a fool. she's been gathering up her courage, but she can't utter two simple words. she mouthed one, yet mute. "i'm.."
"you're...?" miles encouraged. she is still having a hard time confessing, and she hates how stupid she looks. "oh shit, don't tell me you're the prowler?" he teased, fully knowing [name] knows he and his unlce aaron are the prowler.
she lightly hit him, scoffing, "it's quite the opposite, actually." she beamed at him, the pressure on telling him is suddenly liften up.
"oh fuck, you're kingpin?!" he made a fake shock expression, a little too exaggerated in her opinion. it kinda reminds her how he was before his dad died.
"shut up," she nudged him, and the two fell into a fit of small laughs. the tension is lifting up by the second they spend together. she took a sharp exhale befire uttering: "i'm spiderwoman." her gaze was quick for his reaction.
but he stared at her blankly, "did mom put you up to this comic-con thing?" he rubbed his face. it's a little too early for something like this.
"what? no, miles—" [name] swiftly took of her (miles') jacket, revealing him fully her suit underneath. but he already stood up, making his way to the kitchen with his girl on his tail. "— look!" gesturing her suit.
"i'm just gonna get us some water, be right back." she rolled her eyes at his comment. he wanted the truth, she gave him the truth, but the asshole is not believing her. she frustrated, mad even. she finally gathers up the courage to tell him, and he won't even believe her.
she shoot a web on his back with a tiny pwip noise, then harshly pulled him back to her, "oh motherf—" he almost cursed at the sudden move, and his chest collided with hers, though his impact did her not damage when almost his full weight came crashing towards her.
startled by the sticky web, "what the—?!" another pwip was heard, [name] shoot a web to the remote that was near them, and it retrieved it to her.
she then toss it near a wall behind him and shot it with a flick of a wrist. the remote is stuck on the wall with her webs, helping it stick. "holy shit—" miles exclaimed again as he witnessed it, turning around to face his girl but met with clothes on the floor.
miles swiftly looked around and met with his girl's face upside down. "do you believe me now?!" she asked, with a frown, her arms crossed over her chest. she's wearing her suit with her mask off, which explains the clothes on the floor.
he looked up, seeing her standing on the ceiling. she's even tapping her feet, impatient with his answer. her frown stared to turn into a worried one, "what? you're not gonna say anything?" her hair sway in the air, with every strand being pulled by gravity.
she's spiderwoman, alright.
"metal." he utter as he fully take her in, a small beam capture her lips. miles snort a laugh out, mirroring her smile. "does anyone else know about... you being a weirdo?" a tease is present, his smile turned into a smirk when she rolled her eyes.
"you're mean, mr. prowler." [name] poked his forehead repeatedly and only stopped when he sway her hand away. "no one knows. except you, i guess." a cocky grin tug his lips, making her scowl, "oh god—"
"i feel a bit special right now. don't take it away." he peaked her forehead. his cocky attitude is still intact.
"you only know because you technically forced me," [name] shrugged, circling his figure. her feet still stick on the ceiling. "you didn't expect it, huh?"
"i didn't," he confirmed, nodding as he followed her face by spinning around as he spoke. "i'm - i'm impressed. my girl is the heroine of the city." he proudly announced in the quiet apartment. his face soon turned into a gentle frown, "you risk your life every day..."
spiderwoman then sighed, turning away from him, her steps came halt. "miles, no matter what you say, i'm not gonna stop being the -"
"friendly neighbourhood, spiderwoman." he finished for her, "i know, mamí." with a finger, he turned her head to face him, gently caressing her cheek in process. "i'm just worried for you."
"i'll be fine," smiling comfortably, "you know me, i always get up no matter what.." she captured his lips with tip toes, but shooting a web on the ceiling to stable herself. the iconic spider kiss. the two lovers catch their breaths once pulled away, [name] smirked, "i've always wanted to do that."
miles chuckled and shook his head, his braid sway in the motion. "gotta say, mamí, i know why hobo is after my girl."
[name] mask her wince with a giggle, shaking her head. she reached a hand to caress his cheek, and she beamed at the sight of him snuggling for her warmth. "sorry to ruin it, but hobie knew before you." she pursed her lips, biting her the inside of her cheeks as his soft stare formed to shock before it became a frown.
"you little shit," the girl couldn't stop the laugh from coming, when her boyfriend begun to walk away,
"mi corazón~!" she called in a teasing tone, jumping down with a thud she chased after him as he made his way to the kitchen for water. she attacked his back with an embrace, she stuck her feet on the ground, preventing him from moving anymore away from her. "te amo, papí." [my heart~!] [i love you, papi]
miles let out and exaggerated sigh, he peaked behind him, seeing his girlfriend who was smiling innocently at him. "you have destroyed my trust. you may let go of me, peasant."
"milessss!" she let him drag her on the floor. he's being dramatic, and he knows it. he's just being petty. "he's from work, of course he knows!" [name] quickly explained, her hold is still not losing one bit. "he's another spider!"
he took a sharp turn to her way, with a confuse expression, "how many spider-people are there?" the girl only smirks, knowing this is gonna be a looooong morning.

On the left, we have the minotaur! Around 7-9 feet (2.1-2.7 m) tall, cunning with maps and traps and such, literally as strong as an ox, and has a blatant disrespect for authority! They're starting to lose the bloodthirsty and brutal influence of the demon lord who created them, but displays of power still seem to run in their blood just as strong. So it'll likely be rough!
On the right, Blue Dragon, the burrowing lightning dragon of the sand! 20-80 feet (6-24 m) long depending on age. What sets this lightning dragon apart from its peers is that they're quite social! They actually stick with thier families, are excellent parents, and even settle into societies. These ones ones aren't full of the same murderous cruelty as most, they prefer talking shit and manipulation. Like using illusion magic travelers to go miles out of their way just for the hell of it.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has performed a weather report for a distant planet. The powerful space telescope forecasts extreme wind speeds, blisteringly hot temperatures and blankets of rock clouds for the world, named Wasp-43b. As such, the extrasolar planet, or "exoplanet," demonstrates just how strange alien planets outside the solar system can be. WASP-43b orbits a star located around 283 light-years from Earth; it sits so close to its star, in fact, that it completes an orbit in just around 19 Earth hours. This proximity, equal to around just 1.3 million miles (2.1 million kilometers), means the planet, with a mass around 1.8 times that of Jupiter and a width 0.9 times that of the gas giant, is tidally locked to its star, WASP-43.

Operating an SY [Superyacht] is expensive and ecologically damaging. On average, an SY over 71 meters/233 feet uses 500 liters/132 gallons of gasoline an hour, and annual fuel costs for an average SY are around $400,000. From available data, we estimated that an average (71 meter) SY uses about 107,000 gallons gasoline/year and produces 2.1 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Thus, the fleet of 300 SY produces approximately 627 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year. That very large figure needs to be placed in context. To do so, we compare the carbon and gasoline footprint of Sys owned by the wealthy to the average vehicle—a more affordable mode of transportation for the average person operated in the United States. An average new car gets 25.5 miles per gallon (mpg) in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, an average person drives about 13,476 miles, using 528.5 gallons of gas, and generates 10,358.6 pounds of CO2 pollution annually. Thus, one average SY produces as much CO2 pollution as 202 average cars, and, annually, the SY fleet (N = 300) uses as much gasoline as 60,600 cars that get 25.5 mpg. Another way to illustrate the annual ecological harm caused by SY is to compare the CO2 emissions from the 300 largest SY to the CO2 emissions of entire nations. The SY fleet carbon emissions (nearly 630 million pounds), for example, is similar to the emissions of the 10.6 million inhabitants of Burundi (654.02 million pounds), and 5.7 times larger than the carbon footprint (111,556,039 pounds) of the small (36,157 inhabitants) developed nation of Liechtenstein. Thus, the carbon footprint of the global SY fleet of the wealthy produces as much ecological disorganization as entire nations of people.

Countries that are no more: Achaemenid Empire (550BC-330BC)
It was not the first empire of Iranian peoples, but it arose as probably the greatest in terms of influence and became the measure by which all subsequent Iranian empires tended to compare themselves and its influence on culture, government & civil infrastructure would influence others beyond the span of its territory and the span of time. This is the Achaemenid Empire.
Name: In Old Persian it was known as Xšāça or the "The Kingdom or the Empire", it was named the Achaemenid Empire by later historians. Named after the ruling dynasty established by its founder Cyrus the Great who cited the name of his ancestor Haxāmaniš or Achaemenes in Greek as progenitor of the dynasty. It is sometimes also referred to as the First Persian Empire. The Greeks simply referred to it as Persia, the name which stuck for the geographic area of the Iranian plateau well into the modern era.
Language: Old Persian & Aramaic were the official languages. With Old Persian being an Iranian language that was the dynastic language of the Achaemenid ruling dynasty and the language of the Persians, an Iranian people who settled in what is now the southwestern Iranian plateau or southwest Iran circa 1,000 BC. Aramaic was a Semitic language that was the common and administrative language of the prior Neo-Assyrian & Neo-Babylonian Empires which centered in Mesopotamia or modern Iraq, Syria & Anatolian Turkey. After the Persian conquest of Babylon, the use of Aramaic remained the common tongue within the Mesopotamian regions of the empire, eventually becoming a lingua franca across the land. As the empire spread over a vast area and became increasingly multiethnic & multicultural, it absorbed many other languages among its subject peoples. These included the Semitic languages Akkadian, Phoenician & Hebrew. The Iranian language of Median among other regional Iranian languages (Sogdian, Bactrian etc). Various Anatolian languages, Elamite, Thracian & Greek among others.
Territory: 5.5 million kilometers squared or 2.1 million square miles at its peak circa 500BC. The Achaemenid Empire spanned from southern Europe in the Balkans (Greece, Bulgaria, European Turkey) & northwest Africa (Egypt, Libya & Sudan) in the west to its eastern stretches in the Indus Valley (Pakistan) to parts of Central Asia in the northeast. It was centered firstly in the Iranian Plateau (Iran) but also held capitals in Mesopotamia (Iraq). Territory was also found in parts of the Arabian Peninsula & the Caucausus Mountains.
Symbols & Mottos: The Shahbaz or Derafsh Shahbaz was used as the standard of Cyrus the Great, founder of the empire. It depicts a bird of prey, typically believed to be a falcon or hawk (occasionally an eagle) sometimes rendered gold against a red backdrop and depicts the bird holding two orbs in its talons and adorned with an orb likewise above its head. The symbolism was meant to depict the bird guiding the Iranian peoples to conquest and to showcase aggression & strength coupled with dignity. The imperial family often kept falcons for the pastime of falconry.
Religion: The ancient Iranian religion of Zoroastrianism served as the official religion of the empire. It was adopted among the Persian elite & and had its unique beliefs but also helped introduce the concept of free-will among its believers, an idea to influence Judaism, Christianity & Islam in later centuries. Despite this official religion, there was a tolerance for local practices within the subject regions of the empire. The ancient Mesopotamian religion in Babylon & Assyria, Judaism, the Ancient Greek & Egyptian religions & Vedic Hinduism in India was likewise tolerated as well. The tolerance of the Achaemenids was considered a relative hallmark of their dynasty from the start. Famously, in the Old Testament of the Bible it was said that it was Cyrus the Great who freed the Jews from their Babylonian captivity and allowed them to return to their homeland of Judea in modern Israel.
Currency: Gold & silver or bimetallic use of coins became standard within the empire. The gold coins were later referred to as daric and silver as siglos. The main monetary production changes came during the rule of Darius I (522BC-486BC). Originally, they had followed the Lydian practice out of Anatolia of producing coins with gold, but the practice was simplified & refined under the Achaemenids.
Population: The estimates vary ranging from a low end of 17 million to 35 million people on the upper end circa 500BC. The official numbers are hard to determine with certainty but are generally accepted in the tens of millions with the aforementioned 17-35 million being the most reasonable range based on available sources.
Government: The government of the Achaemenid Empire was a hereditary monarchy ruled by a king or shah or later referred to as the ShahanShah or King of Kings, this is roughly equivalent to later use of the term Emperor. Achaemenid rulers due the unprecedented size of their empire held a host of titles which varied overtime but included: King of Kings, Great King, King of Persia, King of Babylon, Pharaoh of Egypt, King of the World, King of the Universe or King of Countries. Cyrus the Great founded the dynasty with his conquest first of the Median Empire and subsequently the Neo-Babylonians and Lydians. He established four different capitals from which to rule: Pasargadae as his first in Persia (southwest central Iran), Ecbatana taken from the Medians in western Iran's Zagros Mountains. The other two capitals being Susa in southwest Iran near and Babylon in modern Iraq which was taken from the Neo-Babylonians. Later Persepolis was made a ceremonial capital too. The ShahanShah or King of Kings was also coupled with the concept of divine rule or the divinity of kings, a concept that was to prove influential in other territories for centuries to come.
While ultimate authority resided with the King of Kings and their bureaucracy could be at times fairly centralized. There was an expansive regional bureaucracy that had a degree of autonomy under the satrapy system. The satraps were the regional governors in service to the King of Kings. The Median Empire had satraps before the Persians but used local kings they conquered as client kings. The Persians did not allow this because of the divine reverence for their ShahanShah. Cyrus the Great established governors as non-royal viceroys on his behalf, though in practice they could rule like kings in all but name for their respective regions. Their administration was over their respective region which varied overtime from 26 to 36 under Darius I. Satraps collected taxes, acted as head over local leaders and bureaucracy, served as supreme judge in their region to settle disputes and criminal cases. They also had to protect the road & postal system established by the King of Kings from bandits and rebels. A council of Persians were sent to assist the satrap with administration, but locals (non-Persian) could likewise be admitted these councils. To ensure loyalty to the ShahanShah, royal secretaries & emissaries were sent as well to support & report back the condition of each satrapy. The so called "eye of the king" made annual inspections of the satrapy to ensure its good condition met the King of Kings' expectations.
Generals in chief were originally made separate to the satrap to divide the civil and military spheres of government & were responsible for military recruitment but in time if central authority from the ShahanShah waned, these could be fused into one with the satrap and general in chiefs becoming hereditary positions.
To convey messages across the widespread road system built within the empire, including the impressive 2,700 km Royal Road which spanned from Susa in Iran to Sardis in Western Anatolia, the angarium (Greek word) were an institution of royal messengers mounted on horseback to ride to the reaches of the empire conveying postage. They were exclusively loyal to the King of Kings. It is said a message could be reached to anywhere within the empire within 15 days to the empire's vast system of relay stations, passing message from rider to rider along its main roads.
Military: The military of the Achaemenids consisted of mostly land based forces: infantry & cavalry but did also eventually include a navy.
Its most famous unit was the 10,000-man strong Immortals. The Immortals were used as elite heavy infantry were ornately dressed. They were said to be constantly as 10,000 men because for any man killed, he was immediately replaced. Armed with shields, scale armor and with a variety of weapons from short spears to swords, daggers, slings, bows & arrows.
The sparabara were the first line of infantry armed with shields and spears. These served as the backbone of the army. Forming shield walls to defend the Persian archers. They were said to ably handle most opponents and could stop enemy arrows though their shields were vulnerable to enemy spears.
There was also the takabara light infantry and though is little known of them it seems they served as garrison troops and skirmishers akin to the Greek peltast of the age.
The cavalry consisted of four distinct groups: chariot driven archers used to shoot down and break up enemy formations, ideally on flat grounds. There was also the traditional horse mounted cavalry and also camel mounted cavalry, both served the traditional cavalry functions and fielded a mix of armor and weapons. Finally, there was the use of war elephants which were brought in from India on the empire's eastern reaches. These provided archers and a massive way to physically & psychologically break opposing forces.
The navy was utilized upon the empire's reaching the Mediterranean and engaged in both battles at sea and for troop transport to areas where troops needing deploying overseas, namely in Greece.
The ethnic composition of Achaemenid military was quite varied ranging from a Persian core with other Iranian peoples such as the Medians, Sogdian, Bactrians and Scythians joining at various times. Others including Anatolians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Anatolians, Indians, Arabs, Jews, Phoenicians, Thracians, Egyptians, Ethiopians, Libyans & Greeks among others.
Their opponents ranged from the various peoples they conquered starting with the Persian conquest of the Medians to the Neo-Babylonians, Lydians, Thracians, Greeks, Egyptians, Arabs & Indians and various others. A hallmark of the empire was to allow the local traditions of subjugated areas to persist so long as garrisons were maintained, taxes were collected, local forces provided levies to the military in times of war, and they did not rebel against the central authority.
Economy: Because of the efficient and extensive road system within the vast empire, trade flourished in a way not yet seen in the varied regions it encompassed. Tax districts were established with the satrapies and could be collected with relative efficiency. Commodities such as gold & jewels from India to the grains of the Nile River valley in Egypt & the dyes of the Phoenicians passed throughout the realm's reaches. Tariffs on trade & agricultural produce provided revenue for the state.
Lifespan: The empire was founded by Cyrus the Great circa 550BC with his eventual conquest of the Median & Lydian Empires. He started out as Cyrus II, King of Persia a client kingdom of the Median Empire. His reign starting in 559BC. Having overthrown and overtaken the Medians, he turned his attention Lydia and the rest of Anatolia (Asia Minor). He later attacked the Eastern Iranian peoples in Bactria, Sogdia and others. He also crossed the Hindu Kush mountains and attacked the Indus Valley getting tribute from various cities.
Cyrus then turned his attention to the west by dealing with the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Following his victory in 539BC at the Battle of Opis, the Persians conquered the Babylonia with relative quickness.
By the time of Cyrus's death his empire had the largest recorded in world history up to that point spanning from Anatolia to the Indus.
Cyrus was succeeded by his sons Cambyses II and Bardiya. Bardiya was replaced by his distant cousin Darius I also known as Darius the Great, whose lineage would constitute a number of the subsequent King of Kings.
Darius faced many rebellions which he put down in succession. His reign is marked by changes to the currency and the largest territorial expansion of the empire. An empire at its absolute zenith. He conquered large swaths of Egypt, the Indus Valley, European Scythia, Thrace & Greece. He also had exploration of the Indian Ocean from the Indus River to Suez Egypt undertaken.
The Greek kingdom of Macedon in the north reaches of the Hellenic world voluntarily became a vassal of Persia in order to avoid destruction. This would prove to be a fateful first contact with this polity that would in time unite the Greek-speaking world in the conquest of the Achaemenid Empire. However, at the time of Darius I's the reign, there were no early indications of this course of events as Macedon was considered even by other Greek states a relative backwater.
Nevertheless, the Battle of Marathon in 490BC halted the conquest of mainland Greece for a decade and showed a check on Persia's power in ways not yet seen. It is also regarded as preserving Classical Greek civilization and is celebrated to this day as an important in the annals of Western civilization more broadly given Classical Greece & in particular Athens's influence on western culture and values.
Xerxes I, son of Darius I vowed to conquer Greece and lead a subsequent invasion in 480BC-479BC. Xerxes originally saw the submission of northern Greece including Macedon but was delayed by the Greeks at the Battle of Thermopylae, most famously by Spartan King Leonidas and his small troop (the famed 300). Though the Persians won the battle it was regarded as a costly victory and one that inspired the Greeks to further resistance. Though Athens was sacked & burnt by the Persians, the subsequent victories on sea & land at Salamis & Plataea drove the Persians back from control over Greece. Though war would rage on until 449BC with the expulsion of the Persians from Europe by the Greeks.
However, the Greeks found themselves in a civil war between Athens & Sparta and Persia having resented the Athenian led coalition against their rule which had expelled them from Europe sought to indirectly weaken the Greeks by supporting Greek factions opposed to Athens through political & financial support.
Following this reversal of fortune abroad, the Achaemenid Empire not able to regain its foothold in Europe, turned inward and focused more on its cultural development. Zoroastrianism became the de-facto official religion of the empire. Additionally, architectural achievements and improvements in its many capitals were undertaken which displayed the empire's wealth. Artaxerxes II who reigned from 405BC-358BC had the longest reign of any Achaemenid ruler and it was characterized by relative peace and stability, though he contended with a number of rebellions including the Great Satraps Revolt of 366BC-360BC which took place in Anatolia and Armenia. Though he was successful in putting down the revolt. He also found himself at war with the Spartans and began to sponsor the Athenians and others against them, showcasing the ever dynamic and changing Greco-Persian relations of the time.
Partially for safety reasons, Persepolis was once again made the capital under Artaxerxes II. He helped expand the city and create many of its monuments.
Artaxerxes III feared the satraps could no longer be trusted in western Asia and ordered their armies disbanded. He faced a campaign against them which suffered some initial defeats before overcoming these rebellions, some leaders of which sought asylum in the Kingom of Macedon under its ruler Philip II (father of Alexander the Great).
Meanwhile, Egypt had effectively become independent from central Achaemenid rule and Artaxerxes III reinvaded in around 340BC-339BC. He faced stiff resistance at times but overcame the Egyptians and the last native Egyptian Pharaoh Nectanebo II was driven from power. From that time on ancient Egypt would be ruled by foreigners who held the title Pharaoh.
Artaxerxes III also faced rebellion from the Phoenicians and originally was ejected from the area of modern coastal Lebanon, Syria & Israel but came back with a large army subsequently reconquered the area including burning the Phoenician city of Sidon down which killed thousands.
Following Artaxerxes III's death his son succeeded him but a case of political intrigue & dynastic murder followed. Eventually Darius III a distant relation within the dynasty took the throne in 336BC hoping to give his reign an element of stability.
Meanwhile in Greece, due to the military reforms and innovations of Philip II, King of Macedon, the Greek speaking world was now unified under Macedon's hegemony. With Philip II holding the title of Hegemon of the Hellenic League, a relatively unified coalition of Greek kingdoms and city-states under Macedon premiership that formed to eventually invade Persia. However, Philip was murdered before his planned invasion of Asia Minor (the Achaemenid's westernmost territory) could commence. His son Alexander III (Alexander the Great) took his father's reforms and consolidated his hold over Greece before crossing over to Anatolia himself.
Darius III had just finished reconquering some rebelling vestiges of Egypt when Alexander army crossed over into Asia Minor circa 334BC. Over the course of 10 years Alexander's major project unfolded, the Macedonian conquest of the Persian Empire. He famously defeated Persians at Granicus, Issus and Gaugamela. The latter two battles against Darius III in person. He took the King of Kings family hostage but treated them well while Darius evacuated to the far eastern reaches of his empire to evade capture. He was subsequently killed by one of his relatives & satraps Bessus, whom Alexander eventually had killed. Bessus had declared himself King of Kings though this wasn't widely recognized and most historians regard Darius III, the last legitimate ShahanShah of Achaemenids.
Alexander had taken Babylon, Susa & Persepolis by 330BC and effectively himself was now ruler of the Persian Empire or at least its western half. In addition to being King of Macedon & Hegemon of the Hellenic League, he gained the titles King of Persia, Pharaoh of Egypt & Lord of Asia. Alexander would in time eventually subdue the eastern portions of the Achaemenid realm including parts of the Indus Valley before turning back to Persia and Babylon where he subsequently became ill and died in June 323BC at age 32. Alexander's intentions it appears were never to replace the Achaemenid government & cultural structure, in fact he planned to maintain and hybridize it with his native Greek culture. He was in fact an admirer of Cyrus the Great (even restoring his tomb after looting) & adopted many Persian customs and dress. He even allowed the Persians to practice their religion and had Persian and Greeks start to serve together in his army. Following his death and with no established successor meant the empire he established which essentially was the whole Achaemenid Empire's territory in addition to the Hellenic world fragmented into different areas run by his most trusted generals who established their own dynasties. The Asian territories from Anatolia to the Indus (including Iran and Mesopotamia) gave way to the Hellenic ruled Seleucid Empire while Egypt became the Hellenic ruled Ptolemaic Kingdom. The synthesis of Persian and Greek cultures continued in the Seleucid and Greco-Bactrian kingdoms of antiquity.
The Achaemenid Empire lasted for a little over two centuries (550BC-330BC) but it casted a long shadow over history. Its influence on Iran alone has persisted into the modern age with every subsequent Persian Empire claiming to be its rightful successor from the Parthian & Sasanian Empires of pre-Islamic Iran to the Safavids of the 16th-18th century and the usage of the title Shah until the last Shah's ejection from power in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Even the modern Islamic Republic of Iran uses Achaemenid imagery in some military regiments and plays up its importance in tourism and museums as a source of pride to Persian (Farsi) & indeed Iranian heritage. Likewise, its form of governance and the pushing of the concept of divine rights of kings would transplant from its Greek conquerors into the rest of Europe along with various other institutions such as its road & mail system, tax collection & flourishing trade. Its mix of centralized & decentralized governance. Its religious & cultural tolerance of local regions even after their conquest would likewise serve as a template for other empires throughout history too. The Achaemenid Empire served as a template for vast international & transcontinental empires that would follow in its wake & surpass its size & scope of influence. However, it is worth studying for in its time, it was unprecedented, and its innovations so admired by the likes of Alexander the Great and others echo into the modern era.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of a “long war” in a recorded address on Tuesday as the country’s warplanes continued to pound the densely populated Gaza Strip. In the three weeks since Hamas’s rampage left more than 1,400 Israelis dead, the country’s top officials have maintained their intent to wipe Hamas “off the face of the earth.”
After 16 years in power, Hamas is deeply entrenched in the Gaza Strip. Regional experts have questioned Israel’s ability to dislodge the militant group in its entirety. Even if Israel were to succeed in toppling Hamas, it would leave a governance and political vacuum in its wake and a humanitarian crisis of unthinkable proportions. Already, more than 9,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the local health ministry, which is run by Hamas, but whose numbers have been historically reliable. Among the dead are more than 3,500 children, according to the United Nations.
But what comes after the war? Israeli officials have said little about their plans for the enclave and its 2.1 million residents. In this regard, they have evoked comparisons to the way that the United States went into Iraq and Afghanistan.
Foreign Policy spoke to almost a dozen current and former U.S. and Israeli diplomats and intelligence officials, Palestinian scholars, and regional experts about the future of Gaza. All expressed deep uncertainty, but through political, security, and diplomatic roadblocks, a set of grim scenarios begins to emerge, almost by a process of elimination.
“There’s no fantastic options here. You’re in the zone of what I would call, to put it gently, suboptimal options,” said David Makovsky, who was a senior advisor to the special envoy for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations at the U.S. State Department.
Can Israel Actually Destroy Hamas?
Projections for what is to come in Gaza start bleakly and get worse from there. A ground invasion of the enclave, a thicket of densely packed high-rise buildings, has been compared to the battle against the Islamic State in Mosul, Iraq, in 2016, which saw some of the world’s most punishing urban warfare since World War II.
Except in Gaza, it could be worse. Hamas has had years to entrench its positions in hundreds of miles of tunnels buried underground. The militant group has been known to stake out positions next to schools, hospitals, and mosques, further complicating matters for Israeli targeting. Already, the ferocity of Israel’s bombing campaign has exceeded the most intense rounds of airstrikes used in the U.S.-led coalition battle for Mosul.
“Almost by definition, the Israeli military objective can only be achieved by leveling significant parts of Gaza,” said Frank Lowenstein, a former special envoy for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations for the U.S. State Department.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have repeatedly called on 1 million people to evacuate from Northern Gaza, warning that any who stay will be regarded as an “accomplice” of Hamas. Some 350,000 civilians remain, according to Israeli estimates. Some are too old or sick to be moved; others fear that they will never be allowed to return. Those who have fled to the south have still come under bombardment as Israeli airstrikes have struck throughout the Gaza Strip.
Israeli officials have set a goal of stamping out every last trace of Hamas, “not just decapitating Hamas tactically, but also crushing its ability to have any military or jurisdictional ruling capabilities in Gaza” irrespective of whether they are part of the group’s military wing, said a senior Israeli diplomat who spoke on the condition of anonymity but was not authorized to speak on the record due to Ministry of Foreign Affairs protocol. “There is no differentiation. If they are Hamas, they are Hamas,” the diplomat said.
Beyond the challenging military terrain, experts have questioned whether Israel can even eradicate Hamas in its entirety. In addition to the group’s military wing, tens of thousands of Hamas and some Palestinian Authority bureaucrats run schools, hospitals, and an ad hoc judicial system.
“We’re now talking about some 60,000 people,” said Khalil Shikaki, the director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research. “They are running classes and schools, [and they are] doctors and nurses and people working in social services, people providing water and electricity. Why would Israel go after these people?” Shikaki said.
And then there is the challenge of Hamas as an idea. Founded in the late 1980s with a commitment to armed resistance and the annihilation of Israel, Hamas is the second-largest entity in Palestinian politics. “It’s an organizational embodiment of an idea,” said Aaron David Miller, a former senior U.S. State Department official who worked on Middle East peace negotiations.
As the death toll rises and humanitarian suffering in Gaza compounds, there is a significant chance that Israel’s pursuit of security now could sow the seeds of future insecurity. “I can’t even begin to wrap my brain around the long-term humanitarian and even security implications,” said Khaled Elgindy, the director the Middle East Institute’s program on Palestine and Palestinian-Israeli affairs.
“In the same way that Israelis have this desire for revenge, we can assume that that same human impulse is going to be present on a much more massive scale among Palestinians,” he said.
The Challenge of Reconstruction
While right-wing Israeli lawmakers have floated the idea of annexing parts of the strip, where Israel dismantled its settlements in 2005, senior officials have repeatedly indicated that they have no desire to reoccupy Gaza in the wake of the war.
It’s difficult to envision a day-after scenario in which the IDF doesn’t maintain at least a short-term presence on the ground to prevent any last vestiges of Hamas from reconstituting, as well as to stabilize the immediate situation. Israeli military leaders are already laying the groundwork for an interim scenario in which they oversee security and civilian life in the strip and are already looking at transferring personnel from the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, a military unit that deals with civilian issues in the West Bank, to temporary roles in Gaza, according to a report in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
In the immediate aftermath of an Israeli military operation, humanitarian and reconstruction needs will be gargantuan. Hospitals and mortuaries are already overwhelmed. Supplies of fuel, needed to run hospital generators and water sanitation plants, are already dwindling after three weeks of Israel’s siege.
In the slightly longer term, experts point to a possible coalition of Arab states—potentially signatories of the Abraham Accords, which Israel feels it can work with—that could serve as an interim force to fill the security and governance vacuum in Gaza with support from the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations.
“I can see Egyptian, Jordanian, and Saudi soldiers with the international community controlling the region during an interim stage, and a huge amount of money that will come from the [United Arab] Emirates and the Saudis in order to reconstruct,” said Ami Ayalon, the former chief of Israeli domestic intelligence agency Shin Bet. But the longer and bloodier that Israel’s campaign in Gaza is, the more challenging it will become to secure the cooperation of Arab states.
Then there is the monumental challenge of reconstruction, the cost of which will likely run into the billions of dollars. Amid periodic outbreaks of hostilities between Israel and Hamas over the past decade, Gaza has been in a near constant state of reconstruction. Efforts to rebuild homes and infrastructure destroyed by war have been hamstrung by unfulfilled donor pledges and complicated screening mechanisms put in place to prevent construction materials from falling into the hands of Hamas.
“Reconstruction is crucial,” said Makovsky, the former U.S. State Department advisor. “You need to produce at least the potential of progress quickly.”
Politics After Hamas
The further out that one looks, the murkier Gaza’s future becomes. If Hamas is removed after running the Gaza Strip since 2007, the most obvious candidate to fill the void would be the Palestinian Authority (PA), which runs the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority was created in the wake of the Oslo peace process in the mid-1990s, with the hopes of laying the groundwork for a future Palestinian state.
But this is not a great best-case scenario.
First, there are the optics. The PA was ousted from Gaza by Hamas in 2007 and is unlikely to embrace the idea of returning in the wake of a punishing Israeli military campaign to unseat its rival. “They don’t want to be viewed as coming in on an Israeli tank and taking over the Gaza Strip,” said Zaha Hassan, a fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, whose research focuses on Palestine-Israel peace.
And then there is the question of legitimacy. The PA hasn’t held a presidential election since 2005, when the now 87-year-old Mahmoud Abbas was first elected. An overwhelming majority of Palestinians see the PA as corrupt and inefficient, while its security cooperation with Israel in the West Bank is regarded with deep suspicion as Israeli settlers have continued to chip away at Palestinian lands.
Next comes the capacity issue. The PA has struggled to protect civilians from attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, and its budgets have been stretched to breaking point as Israel has withheld millions of dollars in tax revenues gathered from Palestinians.
The very survival of the PA has come into question in recent years, let alone its ability to take 2 million Gazans under its wing in the wake of a war. For the Palestinian government to have any authority, it would take new elections, significant resources, and “a very different attitude from the Israelis,” said Lowenstein, the former U.S. special envoy. “But we’re at the other end of the spectrum on all of those issues right now,” he noted.
The last Palestinian parliamentary elections in 2006 yielded a shock victory in Gaza for Hamas, which has long sought the destruction of Israel, as a protest vote against perceived corruption in Fatah, the main party in the West Bank. New elections for the Palestinian Authority could include commitments to nonviolence as a means to prevent the election of extremist groups, Lowenstein said. But democratic elections are inherently unpredictable and could require Israel and its partners to respect results that they do not necessarily like.
“Politics is not something that you can engineer from the outside,” said Elgindy of the Middle East Institute.
While an Israeli ground invasion is likely to deal a devastating blow to Hamas’s commanders, its foot soldiers, and its arms caches, many analysts noted that the only long-term solution to address Israel’s need for security and Palestinian’s hopes for self-determination is to work toward a political solution to the conflict.
Speaking to reporters last week, U.S. President Joe Biden reiterated his support for a peace deal and the creation of a Palestinian state. Before the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7, hopes for such a deal had long since slid into the rearview mirror. Support for a two-state solution among Israelis and Palestinians has also declined precipitously in recent years, but many still see it as the only viable way to resolve the conflict.
“If we want to see the state of Israel safe and without losing our identity as a Jewish democracy, this is the only concept. Because otherwise we shall create an apartheid state, and we shall never be secure,” said Ayalon, the former Shin Bet director.

Superstitious pt. 2.1
Tumblr media
Elijah Mikaelson x reader
Warnings/Tags: hurt, angst, comfort, fluff, strong language
Authors note: Hey! Here's part 2 for my darling Elijah! Enjoy!
Read part one here!
Word count: 3.070
Wow.
You thought, your eyes following the particles dancing in front of you.
Since when do I see everything so clearly?
You were mesmerized by it, taking a second to admire it.
Then your hearing came back.
It almost crushed you, as every sound in a ten-mile radius seemed to be caught by your ears. Your brows furrowed as you flinched, trying to figure out what the hell was going on.
Swallowing you felt just how dry your throat was. I’m so thirsty. Why am I this thirsty?
Your eyes focused on the faces staring at you, slowly registering where you were. “What happened?” you croaked out, your voice barely above a whisper.
Elijah’s eyes shifted from you to the ground, his jaw clenched. Niklaus swallowed, averting his gaze as well. You turned, now looking at Rebekah, who didn’t seem like she wanted to give you an answer either.
You felt yourself become angry, the emotion pulsating through your body like the wave of an explosion.
Everything felt so strange, surreal.
Almost hyperrealistic.
As you swallowed again, desperately trying to fight the dryness in your throat, it dawned on you slowly. Your heart seemed to stand still - again -, as you finally grasped onto what had happened to you.
“I’m-” you cut yourself off, blinking rapidly. “I- I’m not human anymore.”
Without you noticing the tears started to flow down your cheeks, blurring your vision momentarily.
Elijah was the first to stand up, walking over to you, before sitting down beside you on his bed. The tears only intensified when he put his hand on your back, trying to comfort you.
Besides loving them and knowing, that they were immortal, you never wanted to become like them. At least not before you had a chance to live, maybe have children of your own – something that now had been taken from you.
Elijah wrapped his arms around you, embracing you in a hug. “I’m so sorry, Y/N.” he whispered into your hair, stroking your back. “But I had to. Otherwise, you would have died.”
Your breath caught in your throat, as the weight of his words hit you.
You would have died.
You were conflicted, not knowing whether to be grateful or to be angry at him.
“You’re in transition right now.” he continued, swallowing. “If you drink human blood, you will become a vampire. If not, you’ll still die. Please consider it, Y/N.”
You heard Niklaus’ teeth grit, causing your gaze to shift to him. His eyes were still glued to the floor, looking up when he noticed your gaze on him, though.
His eyes were shiny, unshed tears threatening to spill.
You shuddered, as you noticed that every emotion of yours seemed to have been intensified. Your mind still felt a bit foggy, but it cleared up slowly.
You hesitated, but your heart had already decided for you. You had to drink human blood, or else you would die.
I don’t wanna die.
You were still so young; you had your whole life ahead of you. Sure, there were a lot of changes and you had to get used to some things, but you wanted to give it a chance.
For them and for yourself.
Separating from Elijah you swallowed, before voicing your decision. “I will do it. I will become a... vampire.” You heard Rebekah sigh, mixed with the rapid pounding of several heartbeats.
You took a shaky breath, trying to steady your heart - and yourself.
How could this happen to me? What have I ever done in my life that someone would kill me?
A million questions tortured your restless mind, almost causing you to miss Elijah who told you he'd be right back, before leaving the room.
The silence seemed more quiet than it would have been with human ears. More pressuring.
"Whoever did this will pay." Rebekah promised you quietly, already forming a plan in her head. "We will find out who's responsible for this. Niklaus mentioned someone who is most likely the culprit of this."
Your eyebrows raised, eyes wandering from her to her silent brother.
How would he know?
Niklaus' teeth grit again, this time almost louder and more powerful than before.
He rubbed his eyes before getting up, brushing through his hair, messing it up further. "I'm gonna find out who did this to you." he promised without properly looking at you, though. "Whoever it is will suffer inevitable pain."
With that he left, just in the moment his brother returned with a blood bag.
"I thought you might not want to feed from an actual human for now." he explained, awkwardly holding the bag in his hands. "Unless you have changed your mind, of course."
Swallowing, you grabbed the blood bag, it's heavy weight only intensifying the burden you were about to load on yourself.
You felt the veins under your eyes pulse, as you unscrewed the cap. The once irony smell was now sweet, almost luring you in. It seemed like it would wash all of your worries away, if you just took a sip.
Hesitantly, but still eager to get rid of the dryness in your throat, your lips curled around the opening of the bag, thankful for not having to splatter it all over you.
Breathing in deeply, which shot the sweet and intoxicating smell of the blood right through your system, you took the first sip.
It felt like you were reborn.
Never have you ever tasted anything this delicious, the rich flavor flooding your veins, tickling your tongue.
Eagerly you continued to drink, almost inhaling the cherry-like juice.
The blood bag made an unpleasant, squelching sound when you had emptied it, still trying to get more, though.
Not having noticed your eyes having closed you opened them again, only to find Elijah's gaze fixed on you. His eyes seemed darker, as he swallowed, averting his gaze to somewhere behind you.
You savored the last drop of blood on your tongue, before you registered what just happened.
You had drank blood, and you liked it.
A lot.
Suddenly it seemed to burn your tongue, making you nauseous. Still, you tried pulling yourself together, inhaling shakily. You had to stay strong. You were a vampire now.
Unsure of what to do with the now empty blood bag in your hands, you awkwardly put it down on the nearest table, almost missing and making it fall down instead. But your reflexes kicked in, catching it in lightning speed, before finally putting it down.
The fast movement made your head spin.
Breathing in deeply you looked over at Elijah, who now was standing alone. "I will teach you how to be a vampire, if you like." he offered, biting his cheek. He didn't seem fully convinced of your newfound fate.
You nodded, being grateful for his help.
"But first, let me check something." he said, taking a step closer to you. "Slap yourself."
Your brows furrowed in confusion, not sure if he was messing with you. "You're jesting." you gave back, shaking your head at his words. "Why in hell would I slap myself?"
He audibly exhaled, visibly relaxing, which only confused you more.
"Elijah, what is going on?" you wanted to know, taking a small step towards him as well, trying to catch his gaze. His upper lip twitched, before he answered you. "We were worried you could be sired to me."
His eyes flickered over your face, trying to read your reaction. Your eyes widened slightly, as your back straightened, mouth agape.
You knew what it took to become sired whilst turning.
Your lips created a sound as they smacked together, turning away from the older Mikaelson in disbelieve.
You couldn't help but feel lost.
Sure, you were relieved that you weren't sired to him, but you knew what his words meant.
He knew.
He knew about your feelings for him, or at least you assumed it given the circumstances.
Otherwise he wouldn't have been worried, right?
"Y/N." he said your name, hesitantly grabbing your arm, turning you back around to him. "It was a possibility which didn't prove to be right. I'm sure Niklaus will be delighted-" he bit his tongue, stopping mid-sentence.
He couldn't believe he said that out loud.
Your eyes widened, looking at him in shock. You weren't sure if you were supposed to be angry or upset, but your heart seemed to settle on both.
"What the hell are you talking about, Elijah?" you demanded to know, pushing his hand, which was still on your arm, away. "What do you mean Niklaus would be delighted? Delighted to what? Knowing that I'm not sired to you?"
He seemed at a loss for words, as his mouth opened and closed a few times without uttering a single word.
Why was he hesitating now?
He sighed heavily, before deciding to be honest with you.
"He loves you." he confessed, biting his cheek in anger. He knew he didn't have the right to tell you, but he managed to get himself into a situation with no other way out.
You paused, your body stiff.
He did what?
"No, Elijah." you chuckled uneasily, not believing his words. "He doesn't. He's my best friend. He can't love me - not like that."
You turned away from him, starting to pace the room with your hands fisting your hair. You weren't sure if you had even heard him right - maybe he said something entirely different? But deep inside you knew it was true.
He really did say it.
"Y/N, listen I know that it's not my right to tell you, but-" Elijah tried to explain, but you interrupted him, abruptly stopping your pacing and turning towards him.
"No!" you shouted with your hands in the air, causing him to flinch the slightest bit. "No, Elijah! He can't! It would ruin everything! Our friendship, our bond! If he loves me - how am I supposed to live with that and act like nothing happened?"
His brows furrowed in confusion, not fully understanding your words. "But- I thought you love him, too." he spoke, voice cracking the slightest bit. He seemed almost disappointed.
You were glued to the floor, your emotions messing with your head, heart racing.
Did you love Niklaus?
Or was it just the love for him as your best friend?
And what was with his brother? What about him?
You swallowed, as it slowly dawned on you.
It wasn't Niklaus.
No, it was Elijah.
Now that your emotions were heightened, you were able to see it more clearly.
You loved him.
He must have felt the shift in mood, as your eyes met his.
They told him everything he needed to know.
You heard his breath hitch, before he suddenly snapped, closing the distance.
His hand found your neck, pulling you towards him, his lips meeting yours in a hungry kiss. The tips of his fingers tickled the back of your neck slightly, as they tangled in your hair.
You were surprised, to say the least.
But your heart had already sped up, taking action as your lips eagerly kissed him back. Your hands found their way into his hair, tugging him closer.
His other hand found the curve of your hip in the blink of an eye, his fingers lightly digging into the flesh, making it all the more real.
Emotions exploded inside of you, all of your love for the man now devouring your mouth rushing through your veins. You were sure he could feel the fire as well.
It was magical.
He kissed you with a passion that soon enough took your breath, but you didn't care. You were immortal now and if it meant you would die of suffocation whilst kissing the man you loved - that seemed fair enough to you.
The sound of your ragged breaths rang in your ears, making goosebumps erupt all over your skin.
His lips slowly left yours, connecting one last time in a featherlight kiss, before his forehead met yours.
His breath fanned over your face, lightly moving the strands of hair hanging in it. Your heart raced like it just ran a marathon.
Your eyes found his, the brown colour radiating a warmth that spread throughout your entire being. You couldn't help but smile, a giddy feeling fighting its way up to the surface.
"It's you, Elijah. Not your brother. He never was." you confessed, still trying to catch your breath. "I love you. I love you, and only you, Elijah."
You heard his breath being caught in his throat, pupils dilating. A smile formed on his face, a relieved one. "I love you, too, Y/N." he confessed as well, his hands carefully holding your cheeks, caressing them. "I was so scared - I couldn't risk losing you. I know how much you loved being human, but I hope eventually one day you'll be able to forgive me for my selfishness."
A tear slipped from your eye, as your heart cracked a little.
The wound was still fresh, but what was done, was done. You weren't able to go back in time, so you had to accept it. Which also meant you would forgive Elijah.
"I forgive you." you rasped out, as he wiped the tears with his thumbs. "We aren't able to turn back time, so we'll have to accept it. And I forgive you, because it means that I'll be happy with you by my side."
A relieved breath left his lips, before he pressed them onto yours again.
You tasted the saltiness of your tears, but you didn't care. His lips were so much sweeter than you could have possibly imagined.
They moved in sync with yours, exploring each other.
Before the moment could get too heated, though, someone cleared their throat behind Elijah, gathering your attention. You separated, looking behind him.
It was Niklaus.
And he didn't look happy.
You swallowed, knowing that you most likely just broke his heart - if Elijah's words about his brother loving you were true.
"Nik-" you wanted to explain yourself, but he cut you off, staring at his brother's back like he didn't see you at all. "We found something."
Before either of you had the chance to reply, he was gone.
You bit your lip, feeling guilty and ashamed.
Elijah grabbed your hand, snapping you out of your wandering thoughts. He motioned for the door and you followed him, as he made his way to where his siblings were.
They were stood at a table, a brown paper bag in front of them. Niklaus wordlessly shoved it in your direction when you came to a halt beside them. Biting down a remark you grabbed it, only to be hit by a strong scent of death.
Eyes widening you looked inside, before wishing you hadn't.
Inside was the head of a woman.
The bag was faintly stained with what seemed to be her blood, it already turning a dark shape.
You almost gagged, quickly pushing the bag away from you with such force, that it almost tipped over.
"What the hell?" you breathed out, before covering your mouth.
"One of the daywalkers found her." Rebekah explained, when her brother didn't make a sound. "She was scribbling weird signs on the walls of the compound. He killed her instead of taking her to us."
Niklaus rolled his eyes. He seemed fed up and exhausted.
"I will have them on the lookout." he explained, biting the inside of his cheek. "She was one of the women that talked about you at the gallery. Whatever she has to do with you dyi-" he cut himself off, taking a deep breath, leaning with both hands on the table. "We will find out who she is and who sent her."
You could only nod, glancing at Elijah. He seemed lost in thought, his hand absentmindedly toying with the collar of his jacket.
He excused himself, but not without looking back at you with warm eyes, taking Rebekah with him.
Oh, that snake.
You sighed, not feeling ready for this conversation.
"Can we talk?" you asked Niklaus, hoping he would listen to you.
He huffed, teeth gritted, before looking up at you. You didn't have to look up, seeing as he was still leaning on the table.
He shook his head, and you thought he would deny your request, before pushing himself off the table. He took a few steps away from you, creating some distance.
"So, it's the noble brother." he began, smiling bitterly at the irony. "He always is."
Tears stung your eyes at his heartbroken look. "Niklaus-" you began, but he wasn't finished yet. "I should have known. Just, please tell me you're not sired to him." This time you shook your head, signaling no. "He tested it and I passed."
His tongue darted out between his lips, licking them, before tearing at the sensitive skin with his teeth. He looked up at you, a look of determination and sincerity in his eyes, tears making them glisten.
Your brows furrowed slightly in confusion, as he suddenly crossed the distance and grabbed you by your arms, before his lips landed on yours.
They desperately moved against yours, trying to savor what little he would get.
He caught you off-guard, and it took you a moment to softly push him away. He let you, already knowing it would be inevitable.
His lips disconnected from yours, his eyes glued to the ground.
"I-" he started, cutting himself off. "I just had to - at least once."
You understood him, knowing you would have done the same.
"If you really love him - I will support you." he quietly told you, finally looking up. "It will take a while, but it'll work out."
You nodded, relieved that he was willing to accept your decision.
"Please don't let it get awkward between us, Nik. Promise me." you asked of him, hope making your heart rate pick up. He huffed, before a small smile split his lips. "I promise, love."
It took a while, but when Elijah returned, he had news. He had found out who was responsible for your death.
His arm was wrapped around your middle, lips brushing your temple, as you stared at the night sky.
"So, your mother, huh?" you asked, biting your lip at the thought of his mother wanting your death.
"This will surely get interesting."

Hurt pt 2.1?
Tumblr media
chapter;2.1
warnings; short chapter
You have been here for a month now and agreed to teach the recoms the Na’vi life.
It was hard to say the least at first. They didn’t take it seriously at all but after a while they opened their eyes to the life eywa has given pandora.
While it was hard to teach them it was also adorable seeing them act like children while finding new things in pandora.
You and Miles had still been a little awkward since your yelling match ,but he had seemed to become softer since then.
You both would glance at each other like two teenagers. To the team it was very funny seeing their colonel get nervous around the Na’vi women. Spider seeing it was unsure how to feel.
It was almost always just you and him. Sure he had the sully’s but at the end of the day his mothers love kept him warm and protected.
But at the same time maybe it wasn’t so bad,he could finally have a father and a mother that love him.
Today you figured that they have all been working so hard that they could have a test day.
“ Today we will do nothing but bask in ewyas glory.” You say in front of the group clasping your hands together in front of you with a smile on your face.
“ Hell Yeah!!” Z-dog says creating other happy chants from the others.
The recoms took off their shoes leaving them by the meeting tree, and rush off to collect new findings taking spider with them.
You and miles sit at the edge of the pond looking from a cross to where the team were.
“Do you miss it ,”miles asks “do you miss being outside with your people ?”
“They could be your people”you say with kindness
Look around look at your family look at spider
Miles sighs “it’s not that simple darlin , we’re would we go huh ? I got two shits on how this world works. I’ve already done so much bad.”
“Then stop doing it” you say shrugging your shoulders
Miles huffs out a short laugh “yeah maybe “
The conversation was short lived when you hear a proud shout.
“I did it ! I did it !” Z dog says holding a large fish yelling across to you and Miles.
“You did Z I’m proud of you !!” You say “we shall make you a cord when we get back.” Z blushes and claps her hands excitedly like a child getting a new toy.
“Man, I wish we could stay like this forever.” Lyle says “ I don’t want to go back it’s less pressure out here.”
“Well maybe we don’t have to” Miles says

A rectangular tailings pond changes appearance as waste is pumped in from the nearby Fimiston Open Pit gold mine in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Covering about 0.82 square miles (2.1 sq km), this pond is five times the size of the Vatican City and holds millions of tons of tailings — rocks and chemicals left over after gold is extracted. Fimiston, also called “Super Pit,” is the sixth-deepest open-pit mine in the world, at 1,968 feet (600 m).
