Does anyone else sometimes just think about the scene in No Rest For The Wicked and feel like chewing glass because Dean is desperate to hide his intense, overwhelming *fear* from Sam, and Sam wants to share his terror and Dean cannot handle that because he knows it’s his fault. He somehow manages in this fraught moment where they are probably both tense as bowstrings to draw out a little glimpse of that laughing S1 Sam by singing badly together like you know he must have done a hundred times before to distract/cheer up a moody Sam who wants a conversation he can’t deal with. He’s with fear and he chooses a song that doesn’t help him at all - fuck, the lyrics make things worse - but Sam is into it so it’s okay. It threatens to just be a lighthearted tension-easing moment until the end when you see the terror on Dean’s face and you are right back into the pressure and horror of the situation.
It’s them against the world, it’s them doomed by the narrative and forced into the roles they fought against and resent and need and choose over and over and can’t ever escape. All this distilled into one scene while singing ‘80s hair rock.

We all know the story, watched as it unfolded and grew after the hunter met his angel in the barn. Only that wasn't Dean and Cas's first time meeting. What's untold are the events during Dean's extraction from hell.
From enemy to ally, to best friend and family to eventually falling in love. This is my imaginative telling of those events, starting moments before Cas gripped his hunter tight and raised him from perdition.
Set after 03x16, No Rest for the wicked, and just before the events of 04x01, Lazarus Rising.

3x16, No Rest for the Wicked
Critical theory: Family. Inevitability.
Discussion question(s): The meta narrative—Dean went to hell because of the writers strike. How does this affect our viewing of this episode, and indeed the season arc?
Key quotes: Bobby, “Family don’t end with blood, boy.”
Further reading: Bon Jovi smoke and mirrors. (@zombiegirldean)(This was added after we watched the episode, so is not discussed specifically, but is very relevent to our discussion.)
Discussion:
Lilith is weird and creepy. Is she thee biblical Lilith? That would make her. The oldest (except from maybe Lucifer). [would it?]
Similar to Jus in Bello. They made the decision that they made, because of course they did, because they refuse to accept that this is war, because they handle this the way they always have [~the way Dad taught us]. They were never gonna go about it any other way. People/demons keep trying to get them to make decisions that they were never going to make. Because it’s them.
Dean’s composure for Sam. [Dead or alive scene. That was for Sam’s benefit. Dean is scared, but it got Sam laughing. And as soon as Sam’s not looking, Dean’s composure breaks]
[meta. I read them some info about how the writer’s strike affected this season, not only cutting it short, but delaying or scrapping certain plot lines. Of course, building to the major change this season; Dean was not supposed to go to hell.]. Kai, “God bless the writer’s strike.” Iga, “Of course he should have gone to hell.” The show talks about inevitability over and over again. Of course he should have gone to hell. That was the consequence. If they fixed it / broke the deal, it defeats the purpose. It would’ve been kinda bad writing. [The writer’s strike changed this entire show, to its core, forever.] It was the beginning domino.
Star student: Kai, discussion in relation to Jus in Bello / They were never going to do this any other way.

This is why I love the show. There's a serious, hardcore depth that'll bring you to your knees.
But then there's light and levity, too:
