You know how I keep saying that Eddie’s heart is Buck?
I mean, Christopher is indeed his world (often symbolized by the universe and planets on shirts and the model in his room), but his heart is Buck.
911 5x06 pretty much cemented that for me, in that Mitchell gave his heart to save his son, in 4x14 Eddie tells Buck that if anything happens to Eddie, he gets Christopher.
In this analogy, Buck is the heart, the one that will "save" Christopher, look after him if Eddie’s is gone.
In 5x06, Buck tells Eddie that Mitchell is dead, and Eddie says that his heart isn't and he needs it to stay that way so he can save Mitchell's son.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Eddie says, "and I need it to stay that way." The frame is on Buck.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, when Buck runs inside to get what Eddie asks for, Eddie’s eyes linger on Buck until he disappears into the hospital.
Tumblr media
In 5x14, we also have the famous "I misunderstood the assignment" where Eddie holds the actual heart Christopher drew in his right hand, but Buck's cute 😏 heart in his left hand, on the heart side.
Tumblr media
So I ask you, what happens when that heart stops beating, even if just for a few seconds? 🥺❤️🥺

I saw your tag that out of the 3 monkeys, macaque is the most mentally well, and i had a mini breakdown about the fact youre right. You shouldnt be right, but you are
IT FEELS WRONG RIGHT. Like, Macaque is the red and black edgy monkey with shadow based powers, and yet he's also the only one whose positive character arc has impacted the story in an undeniably constructive way. Who knows what would have happened had he not been there to help MK in both 4x10 and the s4 special.
And like, MK on the other hand has had a negative character arc for the whole show (with "Revenge of the Spider Queen" and "The Emperors Wrath" being small hills in the road, but knowing MK we're going DOWN next season). MK is still going to get worse before he gets better (I'm predicting mega guilt over having a hand in Azure's death, but we'll see—also everything about his monkey form/himself is pretty much unresolved soooo) and don't even get me started on Wukong. He ALSO has had a negative character arc the whole show, with his main improvement being his resolve to be more open with MK. But like, between Mei chewing him out in 3x10, getting possessed by LBD, and now his time spent in the scroll—let's just say I'm worried for the Monkey King.
At the start of the show I'd say MK, SWK, and Macaque are all mentally unwell in their own special and equal ways, but Macaque actually got somewhat better (thank you 3x13). He's the only one. It's ridiculous.

Buck and Eddie: The Shooting vs. The Shocking
Buck & Eddie’s Relationship vs. Chimney & Hen’s Friendship
Part 1 of 3: The incidents
Please note: a more thorough analysis of Buck and Eddie’s relationship when compared with Hen and Chimney’s friendship was previously written, completed and posted by me on June 4, 2022 (related post).
There were major differences included in The Shooting and The Shocking scenes which highlighted the differences between Buck and Eddie’s relationship when compared with Chimney and Hen’s friendship.  Eddie was shot in 4x13 “Suspicion” and the aftermath was included in 4x14 “Survivors”.  Hen and Chimney were captured and Chimney’s heart was stopped twice by Jonah in 5x17 “Hero Complex”.
The first important difference between the two incidents involves the way they were filmed.  The Shooting was filmed in slow-motion to create suspense which could be linked to a plot that will be revealed at a later date regarding the characters but The Shocking was filmed in real-time.  Buck listens to Eddie, Eddie takes care of Buck and they truly know each other; therefore when Buck saw Eddie be gunned down by a sniper as they stood only a few feet apart, it was not only a traumatic experience for Buck but it was also the second time he almost lost Eddie.  It was very different from what happened in 3x15 “Eddie Begins” when Eddie was trapped in The Well because even though Buck was there too, he wasn’t trapped with Eddie which meant he could only hope that Eddie was still alive.  Hen watched as her best friend’s heart was stopped and it was different for her too since it wasn’t her first time almost losing Chimney (a rebar went through his skull in 1x3 “Next of Kin” and he was stabbed at the end of 2x11 “New Beginnings”).  However, 9-1-1 has consistently shown the difference between the roles Karen (her wife) and Chimney (her best friend) have in Hen’s life including in 5x17 when Hen called Karen first.  During their call, it was Karen who explained that she wasn’t the partner Jonah would be jealous of which prompted Hen to then go to Chimney’s apartment.
The second difference revolves around Buck’s and Hen’s reactions to the incidents.  Buck was in a catatonic state of shock after Eddie got shot, his blood splattered across Buck’s face and he remained that way even after Captain Mehta tackled him to the ground. He saw Eddie’s eyes close while they were laying in the middle of the street having one of their silent conversations with each other and that’s when he came out of shock long enough to save Eddie (related post). After he pulled Eddie underneath the ladder truck, he screamed at the members of the 133 and said, “You get him up!” so that he could place Eddie inside of the truck and out of the line of fire.  When Buck and the 133 took Eddie to the hospital, Buck returned to a catatonic state and he was barely coherent until he made it to Eddie’s house so that he could talk to Christopher. Hen cried and pleaded with Jonah and asked him several times to let Chimney go but he didn’t. Even though she was restrained, she remained both aware of her surroundings and Jonah’s actions while she kept her eyes on Chimney as she watched him move his hand towards the defibrillator.  Buck was in shock because he almost lost Eddie who is his everything for the second time, while Hen was crying for her best friend Chimney.
The third difference between the two incidents includes Eddie’s and Chimney’s responses.  Eddie was in and out of consciousness the entire time but he was cognizant enough to check on Buck.  Eddie was the one who got shot but as usual he was worried about Buck, so he asked him, “Are you hurt?” and Buck responded, “No, no, no. I’m good Eddie. You just hang on”.  Eddie’s legal name is “Edmundo”, it means “protector” and he’s been concerned about Buck’s safety several times in the past (related post).  Chimney’s response was different from Eddie’s and he was more focused on the way he and Hen worked together to stop Jonah. When Hen said, “You saved us”, Chimney responded, “It was a team effort”. Both incidents were traumatic but the implications made by 9-1-1 were clear and they further illustrated how these are two sets of 118 work partners, who mean completely different things to each other.

All right putting on my clown hat to speculate that Buddie will happen in 6x17, not just because the episode is titled Love Is In The Air but because ratings-wise that’s the most logical place to do it and how 911 usually sets up their end of season event.
In season 2 they realize the bomber is still around in the second to last episode and then he blows up Buck in the finale. In season 3 they ended 3x17 with the train derailment and the Abby tease so we’d all watch 3x18.
4x13 of course ends with Eddie being shot and then we see if he survives in 4x14. Season 5 didn’t follow this format and was the weakest finale they’ve had imo (Mayday should have been the season finale all things considered).
But, 911 seems to know that a cliffhanger/reveal in the second to last episode is how to get a big huge ratings finale. And it wouldn’t help to have Buddie canon just in the final episode, they need to make sure people know it’s happening and are tuned in to the finale to get a ratings boost (and hopefully get renewed). So for me, if Buddie is going canon, it’s happening at the end of 6x17.

Speculation 6x9
I've read a lot of speculations about Buck seriously injured in 6x9 and I think it's true
Firstly, his last injury was in 2x18 / first episodes of season 3. Since then we haven't seen him in a hospital as a patient. All others were patients last season (well Eddie in 4x14, but it close + he had breakdown last season).
Secondly, I think it will be a big moment for his arc in this season. Maybe he would understand his secret to happiness in the moment while he losing blood. Like 911 use flashbacks this season a lot, and I think it will be beautiful to see how Buck, while everyone try to save him, sees flashbacks of his DIY family , Maddie, Jee, Eddie, Chris and right that moment just like Lev he understands the key to happiness. He is happy now, with his family. So his last words will be "Now I see. Love you guys". And he is lost his consciousness and his heart stops. But when he wake up in a hospital (I think it will be after hitaus) he knows that he actually found everything he needs, but he should work with his separation anxiety. So a new therapist sessions for him it's a good thing .
Thirdly, I really believe and hope it will give us buddie canon. It's like shooting again, but now Eddie the one who should save Buck. And he will like idk get Buck out of the fire or smt. And he will give him first aid before Chim and Hen run to them ... oh we can have such a perfect parallel to Buck saving Eddie in a fire truck and to Henren where Hen doing cpr for Karen in 6x6 .
BUT !!! I think the scene where Buck needs cpr can be more dramatic if we will see how Bobby holds Eddie tight and pull him away from Buck (like in 3x15 with Buck) , while Chim doing CPR and crying because "Jee can't lose her Uncle Buck, Maddie can't lose her brother, I CAN'T LOOSE MY BROTHER ... again ... C'mon Buck, c'mon man. You need to fight. You need to come back."
And ofc main thing, I hope this another near death experience will open eyes of our boys. It's not that I need them to start dating immediately after that, but at least talk with each other about traumas they share, about fear of losing each other, about will

Ohh, i have a question-what’s one thing/one storyline/one choice made on the show you would like to have further background information on?
The last anon made me remember what mine is-i would just love to know how much they tell guest actors about their own storylines and where they intend to take them. Like GW for example. I always had a feeling that she genuinely expected (or hoped) that she would at least be a way bigger part of the show/potentially Eddie’s endgame, which would be weird if the people in charge were honest with her from the beginning. It’s what has always made me unsure about whether they truly never intended EddieAna to be more than they eventually became.
(Like her liking that one post speculating about an EddieAna pregnancy- sure, could very well just be her being grateful that people support her character, but that being after 4x13/14 and the show confirming what we all already knew…idk)
i don't think they tell guest actors anything beyond what they absolutely need to know at the moment, so while giving GW ana's portion of the 4x14 script, for example, they wouldn't have told her what they had planned for s5. of course, i'm not an expert on how tv works, and i'm sure every show is different, but i highly doubt they told her anything in advance, you know? i don't think any of the actors get that, unless they're setting up for a larger storyline that's playing out as we see it. for example, if buddie is going canon, there's a possibility that oliver and ryan might have known as early as season 4 or 5 because they might have been given, like, specific direction for their scenes together. and this is a huge if. so i highly doubt anything like that was done for eddieana, which was a relatively minor plot point.
something i'd really like to know is how some of the big moments between buck and eddie were written in the script, and how those scenes were directed, what instructions were given to oliver and ryan, etc. if buddie goes canon, i really hope we get a detailed interview about the process that was behind it and all that, i'm SO curious to know all about it.
come talk to me!

abbi im feral about the pushing daisies au and also the universe us going to catch you 👀👀 tell me more 🥺
EM, my dear!
Okay so Pushing daisies AU - is basically a retelling of 911 from Buck's PoV but with Buck have Ned's power to wake the dead, and how he navigates life and his job with the power - its canon until 4x14.... I guess you can figure out why.... and then the shenaigans start!
and 'The universe is going to catch you' fic is based off this song - and the premise was re-telling 911 season 6a from my thoughts on what I thought was going to happen from the BTS and speculation - It's very hannibal-esque in a way as it feature a 'nightmare' stag-like apparition to Buck and follows his pschye after an accident involving a deer (those damn heart/hart analogies again...)
Here's a lil snippet:
A blue four-by-four, or what’s left of it, is wrapped around the truck of a large redwood, crumpled like a tin can someone’s booted down the street.
There’s a trail of blood smeared across the accordianed metal, a pool by the the front tyres that disappears back into the tree line in drips and drabs.
A stag, the ranger says, had ran into the road. But he’s sure nothing was chasing it, since the herd never flinched.
“I don’t understand it - that deer was with its usual grouping, another stag and an fawn, and it just started to run like the devil was after him. The poor fawn didn’t even realise he’d gone. That family had been inseparable, the fawn's mother was killed not too long ago but the other male came and joined them, his father never challenged him.”
They got real close after a rocky start - that male wouldn't leave him even after the older one took a shoulder full of buck shot. Stayed with the fawn and wouldn’t move for anything.
He’s been acting strange for days now, maybe a few weeks, he just up and ran. And then he turned, went running back to his family and the car got him.
In the distance, they could all hear it - the high mewing of the young deer, cutting through the mournful bellows.
And for a moment, Buck feels something for an animal he only tangentially shares a name with

I’ve never seen any of seasons 1 or 2 other than gifs and maybe a few clips of Maya related scenes, had Maya ever been with a guy other than he-who-shall-no-longer-be-mentioned? Like on the show? From what I’ve gathered, most of her ex conquests have been women. Would you say that Maya is more into women than men?
No, we have not seen Maya with a man on the show besides Jack. It does seem like from what the show has shown us that she may lean towards women more than men, but it's hard to say since the show very rarely has the characters discuss and embrace their sexuality. It's something I wish they would lean into more with Maya, Carina and Travis in particular.
Plus Maya did mention to Carina in 4x14 that she had never thought about telling her dad about any women she dated since she never told him about every men she dated, so maybe she dated men more in the early stages of her life and women more in the adult stages...but that would all just be speculation.

People forget that it’s the crazy Twitter stans that directly harassed him about Buddie, saying they should cancel him or destroy his career if Buddie doesn’t happen in 4x14. So I don’t blame him one bit for leaving Twitter, good for him. But I don’t get why that anon had to compare THAT to your fun little speculation? No one is harassing Oliver about the things he post, it’s fun it’s harmless. Maybe just unfollow you if it’s not their cup of tea?
Don’t let it discourage you from doing what you do, we all love it!
Yes exactly this!! Like I was never one of those crazy twitter fans who bullied him and sent him stupid mean shit. I haven’t even sent him anything about my speculation post. This is all for me and us on here. It’s fun to speculate and analyze his behavior. But I’m not including him in this. I’m minding my own business, which some ppl really should do. That ask was uncalled for bc it wasn’t even related to what my spec post was about in any way. Yes plz do unfollow and or block me if my posts aren’t your choice of tea. Ima continue doing me and posting things I WANT TO ON MY BLOG. And just bc I wanna be petty, I will def be turning my Oliver sm post into a series just because I can 🤷🏼‍♀️
Thank you for the kind words 💜

911 2x11 rewatch, I can't help but notice all the parallels from s2 bathena to buddie through the years, especially s4-s6 developing.
From Bobby's problem with how Athena's mom treated her in that first visit, to Athena telling her mother that she wasn't running away, but running towards something, the family she built, the career she's chosen, she said she needed a space big enough where she could build a life that is important to her.
She wanted her to be a part of that life but only if she accepts all of it even Bobby.
And since Buck's parents first showed up, I can see Eddie's disapproval of their treatment of Buck and Buck's protective instincts when Eddie has to go face his dad in Texas in 5x17.
There's also the part where Athena tells Bobby that one day he will become a step-dad and won't be just best bud Bobby, and he has to start putting boundaries for Harry.
In parallel, there is that bit in "parenthood," where both Buck and Eddie tell Chimney that both parents can't be good cops. Eddie teases Buck about wanting to see what his idea of too much discipline looks like with Buck, hinting that Buck is the good cop in that relationship.
But in 4x14, we see Buck telling Christopher it's time to get ready for school when Carla comes to take him. So it seems like Buck managed to find it in him to be able to put some clear boundaries along the way, for when Eddie is not around. So there's also that.
Essentially, both men needed to find a place to develop their careers and build a home and a family, Buck's family (in addition to the firehouse) are the Diaz boys, their home is his and it feels like only a matter of time before this becomes a thing they have to worry about telling their parents of.
Personally, I can't wait 👀

At the hospital, Buck crumbles. His family catch him.
4x14 Speculation
Buck moves through the automatic doors leading into the emergency room.
Sure, his legs are working, but that doesn’t take much thought. The adrenaline is rushing through his veins, creeping up his spine, keeping him on his feet. The rest is muscle memory.
The medical staff didn’t pay him any thought as they whisked Eddie away, barking orders to one another.
Buck stops. He can’t see.
Everything is white. The lights are too bright.
He can’t hear. There’s nothing but tinnitus. Then, the ring of the bullet replays again, the sickening tear as it ripped through Eddie’s shoulder.
Buck closes his eyes, inhales a breath, digging his nails into his palm.
He can taste it.
Eddie’s blood.
The splatter had been almost cinematic, maybe even cliché, as it coated Buck’s face and shirt.
Straight out of a fucking action movie.
Blinding him, scaring him, make him face the situation straight on.
It isn’t fiction. Buck wishes it was.
But Eddie bled out. Eddie might die.
Buck retches.
His heart pounds, maybe he’s dying, but hey,  at least he would be closer to wherever Eddie’s mind has drifted.
He hears voices. He doesn’t have the energy to pull them apart, identify who is who.
They’re calling his name.
The floor beneath him gives away.
He’s falling.
Then impossibly, there’s hands, many sets of hands grabbing at his arms, his hips, his torso, his chest, guiding him onto his knees.
He strains his eyes, desperate to see.
A face hovers in front of him.
Bobby.
It’s Bobby, down on his knees, hands firmly pressed around Buck’s shoulders. Panic swims in his mentor’s eyes, his lips are moving, but the words distort.
Buck shakes his head.
Voices start to become clear.
“—Shock,” That’s Hen, panic laced in her tone, “He’s in shock.”
“Buckaroo,” Chimney attempts a soothing voice, but the treble is clear, “Can you hear us?”
Buck can’t nod. He can’t move.
Hen speaks again, “Pulse is rapid.”
Athena’s voice joins the mix, her tone gentle, “Buck, baby,” Her hand rests on his knee, “We’re here.”
Bobby combs his hand through Buck’s hair, “Buck, you need to breathe.”
He’s holding his breath. He didn’t realize.
Buck inhales, and fuck, it hurts, it hurts like hell.
It’s harsh; he hates it and wants nothing more than to hold it again.
But he can’t.
Bobby rests his hand on the nape of Buck’s neck, “You got it, kid.”
“Bobby—” Buck manages, it’s small, broken, pitiful. He yearns, balling his hands around Bobby’s shirt, “Bobby—” He cries again, doubling over, facing falling between the groove of Bobby’s collarbone and neck.
“Hey, hey,” Bobby supports the sudden weight, “I’ve got you.”
Somebody presses a kiss in Buck’s hair. He knows it’s Athena.
Buck drops, twisting off his knees, practically collapsing into Bobby’s hold. He clings to him as a child would to a parent, and he isn’t ashamed. Not even for a moment.
Bobby never minds. He holds Buck like his own.
Buck sprawls his legs across the laminate floor, his breaths are shallow, and his gaze locks onto the feet of a plastic chair.
“Hang in there, kid,” Bobby chokes, trembling hand still traveling through Buck’s hair, “We’ve got you.”
Buck finds his voice, “Eddie—” He freaks, “Eddie.”
“He’s in good hands, Buck,” Chimney tells him, hand on his shoulder, “The best.”
“Froze,” Buck sobs, “Couldn’t move.”
Hen asks, “What?”
“Too quick,” He stammers, “I didn’t move.”
“We’re not doing that, Buckaroo,” Athena is gentle but stern, “Not your fault.”
Buck jerks, closing his eyes, aware of the blood on his hands, on his face, his shirt, and he wants out, “Blood.”
Silence.
Then Athena speaks, “Okay, I’ll be back,” She knows what’s wrong; she always does; she’s on her feet, heading for the reception desk.
Buck settles in Bobby’s grasp, working on his breathing.
He can hear mummers from his family and the distant whispers of bystanders trying to piece together what might have happened.
“Buck,” Bobby breathes, “Do you think you can stand?”
“I—” Buck swallows - he doesn’t want to get up, “I can.”
Everybody’s hands are on him again as Bobby grips his forearms to lift him onto his feet. He sways, but Bobby’s got him, “Knew you could do it.”
Athena steps close, handheld out, “Come with me, Buckaroo,” She sung calmly, “Let’s get you cleaned up.”
Buck nods and then turns to Bobby, “Will—”
Bobby promises, “We’re gonna check up on Eddie, and then I’ll be right with you.”
“Thank you,” Buck takes Athena’s hand; despite the stained blood, she doesn’t even flinch as she locks her fingers around his.
Athena leads him down the corridor and into the elevator, never letting go of his hand.
Upon exit, a nurse meets with them, holding a towel and some clothes – “From lost and found,” She explains.
Buck didn’t catch her name; he only hears some of what is said.
The next door they go through leads into a shower room.
“Here we go,” Athena helps him to sit on a plastic chair that is in the corner of the room; it squeaks at the sudden weight; Athena mutters about something budge cuts before moving towards the sink.
Athena takes a cloth, running it under the faucet; she rings it out a little.
Buck deflates, slouching in the seat, his leg bouncing.
He feels like a kid. A sick one that needs caring for, the caregiver was usually Maddie, but sometimes Athena or Bobby. He’d welcome any one of them.
Athena gently traces the cloth of Buck’s face, but her chin trembles, eyes filling with tears.
The blood isn’t just blood; it’s Eddie’s blood.
Buck wants to reassure her, but instead, he cries, “So much.”
She stops to nudge his chin up, so their eyes met, “What?”
“He lost so much,” Buck chokes, “Blood – too much.”
She looks heaven forward, then kneels, hands on Buck’s cheeks, “I know you’re scared.”
“I thought he was dead,” The sob tears through him, “He wasn’t moving; he was right in front of me, Athena, and I couldn’t help—”
“He’s here,” Athena tells him, “He’s alive, and you were there; that’s all he needed.” She wipes the cloth over his forehead gently.
“Can I tell you something?” He asks, “That you can’t tell them.”
“Of course.”
His voice breaks, “I almost got hit.”
Athena hisses, pulling back the cloth, “What?”
“Eddie was falling, and I couldn’t move,” He stumbles over his words, “I was the next clearest target.” He shakes his head, “I could see Eddie, he was on the ground, but his eyes were on me; he was trying to get me to move.”
Athena sits on her heels; she takes his hand.
“I couldn’t,” He blinks away tears, “Then the captain he pushed me down.”
She nods.
“If he hadn’t, I’d be dead.”
“Well then,” Athena smiles, “He’s my new favorite person.”
Buck frowns, “Why?”
She rests her hand on his cheek, “He saved you.”
He yelps, “I never freeze.”
“Eddie isn’t a patient that you were assigned to,” She speaks softly, “He’s somebody you love.” She cups his hands, she offers him a soft smile, “You weren’t even in your uniform, sweetheart; Firefighter Buckley didn’t freeze, Buck did. A very brave young man who just watched his best friend get shot.”
Buck croaks, “I did.”
Athena gently grips his chin, making sure he is listening, “Don’t you forget that.”
And despite everything, Buck doesn’t.

Buddie and Bathena: Foreshadowed Conversation
Was Athena and Bobby’s conversation in 4x14 “Survivors” foreshadowing for the conversation Buck and Eddie still need to have about The Shooting?  It’s been 84 years more than 1 and a half years and the audience is still waiting for Buck and Eddie to talk about how it affected both of them.
Athena and Bobby’s actual conversation
Athena: “You know after I was attacked, we never really talked about it.”
Bobby: “I always got the sense you didn’t want to.”
Athena: “No I mean...we never talked about what it was like for you.”
Bobby: “There’s that thing people say, I don’t know what I’d do without you. Because losing someone you love is such an alien concept you don’t want to imagine what it’s like.”
Athena: “Well those people are not like us.”
Bobby: “And I was sitting in that engine thinking I was listening to you dying. And I didn’t need to imagine anything, I knew what my life would feel like without you in it and it scared me.”
Buck and Eddie’s foreshadowed conversation
Eddie: ‘You know after I was shot, we never really talked about it.’
Buck: ‘I always got the sense you didn’t want to.’
Eddie: ‘No I mean...we never talked about what it was like for you.’
Buck: “There’s that thing people say, I don’t know what I’d do without you. Because losing someone you love is such an alien concept you don’t want to imagine what it’s like.”
Eddie: “Well those people are not like us.”
Buck: “And I was leaning over you in the back of that engine thinking I was watching you die. And I didn’t need to imagine anything, I knew what my life would feel like without you in it and it scared me.”

I don’t do episode speculation (and other lies I tell myself) especially for 4x14
Someone is holding his hand.
It’s the first thing Eddie notices when he wakes up in the – hospital? Has to be. Someone is holding his hand. No one held his hand the last time he got shot. It’s nice, or at least nicer.
He remembers, then, the last thing he saw before –
“Buck?”
His voice is cracked and dry and his throat feels like someone poured sand down it and then punched him in the neck. Intubation. So he’d been seriously under.
“Buck?” he repeats. He can’t quite get his eyes open to focus. They’re still blurry from the anaesthesia and the drugs, but he thinks he says the name louder this time. At least loudly enough he can be heard.
“I’m here, Edmundo.”
The hand holding his squeezes, just a little tighter. And it’s too small and soft and delicate to be Buck’s. And the voice is wrong, too. And the name.
“I’m here,” Ana repeats.
“Why?” Eddie asks.
It slips through the drugged haze that asking his girlfriend why she’s sitting at his bedside after he’s been shot is probably not the right thing to do.
But, well, he can always blame it on the drugs later.
“Where’s Buck, is he—”
“He’s outside,” Ana says. Her hand slips out of his and in a distant part of his head he thinks it’s probably the final time. “I can – he’s with Christopher.”
A knot Eddie hadn’t been aware of dissipates. Buck is okay, and he’s with Chris.
“They, um, they wanted to stay together while you were in surgery. Until you woke up,” Ana says. There’s something wrong with her tone and Eddie’s not lucid enough to figure out what it is.
“Good,” he says, and then coughs because his throat is arid. If something were to happen to him – well, something did happen to him. And therefore, Chris should be with Buck. It’s the correct thing.
Ana is still sitting beside him and Eddie can’t imagine why.
“I thought…” Ana starts and then stops. It occurs to him then that he must have woken up a few times already, just doesn’t remember them because of the post-surgery haze. Otherwise, there would be doctors and nurses coming to check on him, instead of Ana. “I thought it should be me, shouldn’t it?”
“What?” Eddie asks.
“Taking care of Chris,” she says. “Shouldn’t – if you and I are – shouldn’t it be me instead of Buck?”
Eddie is too tired, in too much pain, on too many things, to be tactful. “There’s no one I trust more with my son than Buck.”
Ana is quiet for long enough that Eddie thinks he’s fallen back to sleep and is drifting again. And then she says, so softly he almost can’t hear her, “You love him.”
“He’s my best friend,” Eddie says.
“You’re in love with him,” she corrects.
Eddie hasn’t put that exact string of words together yet. He hasn’t – there hasn’t been time yet, but he’s had the feeling. It’s the last thought he remembers having before he lost consciousness in the street. A simple oh, obviously, like one and two equalling three.
It’s funny, of course, that it would feel like a math problem. But hey, he’s never been very good at those.
“Yeah,” he says. And then, because he has to, “I’m sorry.”
She almost laughs, and then very briefly, her lips press against his forehead. “Good luck” is all she says and then she’s gone.
Chris comes into the room a moment later and presses his teary face into Eddie’s good shoulder. Eddie cradles the back of his head and murmurs his best assurances that he’s okay and he’s going to be fine eventually and he’s sorry for worrying him. He finally catches Buck’s expression somewhere too far across the room. Eddie had only seen Chris’s face for a second before Chris hugged him, but Buck’s is a near match. He’s clearly been crying too, and he’s ashen from it.
“Your, um, your abuela and Pepa and Carla are all outside,” Buck says. His voice is stiff and ragged and just this side of broken. “Your – your family. Do you want me to go get—”
“Later,” Eddie says. “I’ve got everyone I need right here.”
