Georges Gershwin Rhapsody in blue for piano and orchestra
Tumblr media
Piano: Philippe Entremont Georges Gershwin, one of America's most celebrated composers, left an indelible mark on the world of music with his iconic composition, Rhapsody in Blue for Piano and Orchestra. This groundbreaking piece, premiered in 1924, seamlessly blends elements of classical music with the vibrant rhythms and improvisation of jazz. The 1920s marked a period of cultural transformation in America, known as the Roaring Twenties. Gershwin, inspired by the bustling energy and diversity of New York City, sought to capture the essence of this era through his music. Rhapsody in Blue emerged as a synthesis of Gershwin's classical training and his love for jazz, a uniquely American art form that was gaining popularity during that time. Rhapsody in Blue is instantly recognizable for its distinctive opening clarinet glissando, which sets the stage for a vibrant exploration of sound. The composition seamlessly blends classical forms with jazz idioms, featuring syncopated rhythms, bluesy melodies, and improvisational sections. The piece is structured as a rhapsody, which allows for a free-flowing and improvisatory style. Gershwin's masterful orchestration creates a tapestry of colors, with the piano often taking the role of a soloist engaging in dialogues with the orchestra. The interplay between the piano and various sections of the orchestra adds depth and complexity to the composition. Rhapsody in Blue not only solidified Gershwin's reputation as a leading composer but also bridged the gap between classical and popular music. Its groundbreaking fusion of classical and jazz elements broke traditional boundaries, captivating audiences with its innovative soundscape. The composition's enduring significance lies in its ability to evoke the spirit of an era and capture the essence of American culture. Rhapsody in Blue reflects the dynamism and excitement of the Jazz Age, transporting listeners to the vibrant streets of New York City during the Roaring Twenties. Moreover, Rhapsody in Blue opened doors for future composers, demonstrating that classical music could incorporate elements of popular genres. Gershwin's composition paved the way for the emergence of symphonic jazz, influencing subsequent generations of composers who explored the fusion of classical and jazz idioms. Georges Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue stands as a landmark composition that defies traditional categorization. Its harmonious fusion of classical and jazz elements showcases Gershwin's innovative spirit and musical genius. By seamlessly blending these genres, Gershwin created a composition that not only captivated audiences during the 1920s but continues to enchant listeners today. Rhapsody in Blue remains a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and capture the essence of a culture. Its enduring significance lies in its ability to bridge the gap between classical and popular music, inspiring future generations of composers to explore new musical frontiers. Listening to Rhapsody in Blue is an invitation to immerse oneself in a harmonious world where classical elegance merges with the vibrant rhythms of jazz, creating a truly timeless and captivating musical experience.

Paul Bowles, Paris, November 12, 1990, a month before the premiere of Bertolucci’s Sheltering Sky, (starring John Malkovitch and Debra Wingerin, & music by Ryuichi Sakamoto)  in which Bowles makes a cameo appearance quoting his famous lines from the book:
“Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20. And yet it all seems limitless.”

Hugely enjoyable collection of Scott Joplin’s ragtime pieces. Reminds me of black and white films with smartly-dressed men and women walking very fast.
I admire many of these composers, who were able to produce so much with so few resources and so few opportunities. Very expressive and creative piano music.

From a distance, it presents itself like so many other small towns, all over the world. Safe. Decent. Innocent. Get closer though... and you start seeing the shadows underneath. The name of our town is Riverdale.”

In 1991, Frank Zappa was chosen to be one of four featured composers at the Frankfurt Festival in Europe. Among those composers were American John Cage, German Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Russian Alexander Knaifel. Even though Zappa was fighting prostate cancer, he accepted Ensemble Modern’s (a German chamber ensemble) request to perform his music and invited them to LA to rehearse. Content with…

I adore picture book biographies because they can be such an accessible, interesting window into history for kids. Today's biography comes from my own collection, and is a great example of that. With "The Extraordinary Music of Mr. Ives: The True Story of a Famous American Composer" (2012), author-illustrator Joanne Stanbridge goes beyond just examining the life of composer Charles Ives, looking at how we was affected by one of the great tragedies of his time, the sinking of the Lusitania, how it influenced his music, and the unusual manner in which his previously unpopular compositions came to be a part of the culture. A truly interesting bit of history, with beautifully evocative illustrations, well worth looking up. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #theextraordinarymusicofmrives #thetruestoryofafamousamericancomposer #joannestanbridge #historybooks #historyforkids #historicalfictionforkids #picturebookbiography #picturebookbiographies #biographyforkids #sinkingofthelusitania #rmslusitania #americancomposer #charlesives #ilovereading #homeschool #homeeducation #teachersshare #iteachthird #iteachfourth #homeschoolcollective #teachingresources #schoollibrariansrock #teachersunited #bestbooksforkids #iteachhistory #nonfictionforkids #nonfictionkidsbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B3z4qaFHFdB/?igshid=1eym1wo0ohxz1

The American John Adams is my favorite living composer. In my mind, no one like him has captured the spirit of our time and given it a truly unique musical form. What I like best in his music are the sudden changes in orchestral colour and tempo — what I personally call the "underwater effect" as it sometimes gives me (especially in Harmonielehre) the impression of diving into an abyssal sea where corals breathe and strange creatures roam. In some pieces, I find this effect so profoundly exhilarating. I burst out in a joyful laughter when I first heard the tempo accelerations in The Absolute Jest; pure enchantment! I could talk about so many of his various works but my favorite piece remains Harmonielehre. The first and third movements are so evocative. I heard it live in Montreal conducted by Maestro Nagano. So thrilling! I was sitting in the choir section of the Maison Symphonique, right on top of the percussions. I had goosebumps. I truly believe John Adams is the Beethoven of our time. This portrait will be featured in my "Face to Face" exhibition at @thompsonlandrygallery opening July 21st. . Philip Glass was born on this day 84 years ago in Baltimore Maryland.  Happy Birthday Philip! [Philip Glass, Kiev Restaurant, Lower East Side, NYC, June 10th 1993. Allen Ginsberg, courtesy Stanford University Libraries/Allen Ginsberg Estate] Philip spent a long time in India, studied Indian music, and some of what I'm doing is like mantra. ..”Mantra," meaning "mind protection spell." In Philip's music and in mantra one principle is to take a simple theme and repeat it over and over with variations, deepening concentration and devotional attention till you enter into it completely or the mantra enters into you, you become one with the sound. For some yogis "Shabda," Sound, is an ultimate yoga: follow sound to its source you'll come to empty silence the origin of the universe.
