Same anon from before, and I'm gonna kick things up a notch, now I'm going in the opposite direction where Wukong (who does have a history of an incredible temper and a catastrophic history of violence) who's so distraught and upset about Mac using his stufent against him and about MK training with Mac that after the fight Wukong lashes out and gives MK that wound before stopping to realize what he's done, but it's too late and MK has screaming and Mac *heard* it happen, and looking at Wukong with total disbelief and broken trust that a shadow portal opens up under and brings him to Mac, who's let down his glamor and has a scar from a similar wound.
AaaaaaAAAAAAAA NOOOOOOOOO and by no i mean YES YES but also AUGH WUKONG NO
Okay this goes for a while so i need a readmore
*head in hands* Wukong.. how would his and MK's relationship ever recover from that. I dunno if it would tbh. I feel like after that though, he'd either 1) hide away and wait for MK to come back, 2) do whatever he can to figure out what magical stuff and things he can get to fix MK's eye, or 3) seek out MK to take back his powers and staff before Macaque convinces him to enact some sort of vengeance and misuse those powers (which Wukong thinks he can understand why MK would do that and feels guilty and deserving enough to think it possible).
Or all three, not necessarily at the same time. Because this monkey may have a temper but DAMN was that Too Far For No Good Reason. He's supposed to be better and look what he did >:( but if his mistake leads to MK doing terrible things, he cant let that happen, and as sweet as Wukong knows the kid to be, its not like MK would go back to being trained under Wukong after losing an EYE. Probably. Definitely.
MK's most likely response would probably be shock, some disbelief, and then resentment, but not vengeance. He might feel guilty for a while, because it was him who went behind his mentor's back, but he'd also realize (and Mac would tell him) that he didnt deserve to be half blind because of it. He'd want to avoid Wukong more than anything, but if Wukong did try to take his powers, he'd fight back - because he still has to protect the city and his friends - and that would only exacerbate things further.
I like to think Macaque would certainly be empathetic, and a bit sympathetic, but im pretty sure the sympathy would be buried under the frustrating righteousness of MK not even trying to get back at Wukong. But hey, if MK begged him to train again (with less trust than before, but he doesnt have Monkey King anymore...) and Macaque actually agreed (probably trying to take the opportunity to convince the kid to share his power with Macaque or have MK fight Wukong with him) then... thats an opportunity for hesitant bonding time :)
For example: living with One Eye!! eh.... it's disorienting, your depth perception is suddenly gone (but kind of there through context clues), if your eye isnt healed yet you get headaches from moving around too much and sometimes from your other eye straining to pick up the pace (i cant remember the stuff i know about this), you may or may not have to sleep upright for a while - stuff i havent researched because if i click off my tumblr app my phone lacks the RAM to keep it open in the background. Fighting is harder, walking is harder, driving is harder. You have a literal blind spot and it's a little terrifying, especially when you dont notice someone is there. You ever do that embarrassing thing where you lift a utensil to your mouth and miss for no good reason (i do that with two eyes)? Macaque may have some tips to help adjust and a greater understanding than everyone else around MK, and thats always nice. Im pretty sure Macaque would encourage MK to use his ears more, especially on the blind side, even if it's easier for the Six Eared Macaque to do that than the two-eared MK.
But man.. the fight between Wukong and MK would be such a hit to MK's already bruised ego. Wukong would admit to his own terrible mistake, but he probably wouldnt even give MK a chance to (maybe not forgive but) move on from what was done because he'd probably shamefully assume he didnt, and then IMMEDIATELY proceed to demand MK renounce his staff and powers and MK is like >:O "NO!!! I- I need these to protect the city!" And Wukong is like "well sure, yeah, but I'll be taking care of that. We cant have you misusing your powers." And MK is all "But I havent been misusing them?? I've literally been kicking demon butt while you were hiding all the way at your mountain or disappearing wherever you want in the world or doing absolutely nothing to help the city." And Wukong is like "You've been watching the island??" When it's more like Macaque was and just telling MK about it because MK wanted to know whenever Wukong was in town so he could hide and Wukong gets all defensive before MK can talk like "Of course you were. Scheming with your new mentor, right?" And MK is like "No??? I didn't- I wouldnt DO that-" and Wukong interrupts with "just like you didnt do it before?" When he KNOWS that MK didnt purposefully work with Macaque the first time but he's getting defensive okay??
Id love to end the ensuing fight with Wukong getting genuinely angry again and that trips up and scares MK BUT. Wukong manages to hold back. He's not there to hurt the kid again, he's there to stop him from hurting himself and anyone else. Which is a bit ironic, because MK's friends most definitely joined in on the fight and got DEMOLISHED, but they're not missing any eyes (or limbs for that matter) and that makes MK SO relieved yet guilty that they'd been put in that kind of danger to begin with. But Wukong definitely made use of MK's blind spot and that definitely hurts, actually, but is also infuriating.
Oh wait how do i end this where the hell is Macaque.
Macaque kept out for the most part, feeling it was necessary to have this play out. Not that it was exactly easy... but he does yoink the kid out of there when Wukong corners him and very nearly takes his powers. And if any little MKs were in denial of just how far Wukong would go to do what he thinks is right (no matter how wrong he is), the good news is that Wukong had to remove the limiting seal on MK's powers that made him less than immortal first, and that achieved two things: 1) MK saw for himself Wukong reaching inside of him to rip out the best defense he has for the city and his friends, and 2) MK's powers remain unlocked when Macaque yoinks him out of there. And so commences the comfort portion of the hurt/comfort that this entire thing seems to be. I always like to think that Macaque is rather awkward when it comes to reassurances. He seems like a guy better at throwing out the harsh, twisted truth and a guy good at giving out platitudes, but he tries.
After that fight, MK and Macaque both realize that the King isn't going to let this go. Before Wukong showed up, MK had a choice between fighting with Macaque and hiding for a little longer, but now he doesn't even have a choice. It's fight or lose.

SCORPION : It’s me.
(Y/N) : I can’t tell if you’re going along with my flirting or if you mean that literally.
(Y/N) : *shape shifted into Scorpion* Get over here!
SCORPION : How many times are you going to say that?
(Y/N) : *back to normal* Until it gets old.
(Y/N) : *imitating Smoke* Where there is Smoke there is fire!
SCORPION : I do not say that.
(Y/N) : One of you ninja freaks do.
(Y/N) : *shape shifted into Sub-Zero but with Scorpion’s voice* Get over here!
SUB-ZERO : I do not say that.
(Y/N) : *back to normal* It’s not my fault you don’t got a cool catchphrase.
(Y/N) : Come on, Kuai, don’t give me the cold shoulder. Ha! Get it? Because you got frosty powers?
SUB-ZERO : Yes. I get it, (Y/N).
(Y/N) : Cool. Glad we’re on the same page.
JADE : You and Johnny Cage are a headache.
(Y/N) : Yeah but I’m the funny one right?
JADE : By the gods…
(Y/N) : You’re cute when you get all fiery.
JADE : I am not nor will I ever be interested,
(Y/N) : Are you Outworld women conceited? I was trynna be all girl power and compliment you.

RAIDEN : I do not wager money.
(Y/N) : If you’re broke just say that.
(Y/N) : Come on, Raiden! Hook me up with Fujin.
RAIDEN : I will not play matchmaker with my brother.
(Y/N) : So you’re broke and not a matchmaker? What are you good for?
LIU KANG : Are you ready for training?
(Y/N) : Not if Kung Lao isn’t here.
LIU KANG : You know you’re the only person to utter that.
(Y/N) : Double or nothing!
LIU KANG : *laughs* I have already beaten you twenty times, (Y/N).
(Y/N) : So??? I will be the last one standing!
(Y/N) : Is it hot in here or is it just you?
LIU KANG : Didn’t you use that line on Scorpion?
(Y/N) : Give me a break. I can’t keep track of everything I said.
(Y/N) : Do your bicycle kick into Shao Kahn. He won’t leave me alone.
LIU KANG : I pity that you have to deal with that.
(Y/N) : The chosen one pities me? I must be dead meat.
(Y/N) : I’m not the bad guy anymore, Sonya.
SONYA BLADE : You were with Kano. Bad guy still stands with you.
(Y/N) : Yeesh. If you want to fuck him, go ahead.
(Y/N) : *shape shifted into Sonya but with Kano’s voice* ‘Ello baby, did you miss me?
SONYA BLADE : That’s not funny.
(Y/N) : *back to normal* Don’t be jealous cuz you can’t do the voice.
KUNG LAO : How come you haven’t trained with me?
(Y/N) : I’m scared I’ll hurt you.
KUNG LAO : Oh, sweetheart. That’s just not possible.
KUNG LAO : You dated Kano?!
(Y/N) : Are you judging me, Lao?
KUNG LAO : I just didn’t know your type was losers.
KUNG LAO : It seems like all the men want you.
(Y/N) : I know right? I’m a total catch.
KUNG LAO : None are better than me.
(Y/N) : You know the Darth Vader thing you got going on is kinda hot.
NOOB SAIBOT : I will bring you to death.
(Y/N) : Okay on second thought….
NOOB SAIBOT : Your fighting is impressive for an Earthrealm woman.
(Y/N) : Why thank you dark shadow thing.
NOOB SAIBOT : That doesn’t mean you can beat me.
(Y/N) : Come on, Bi-Han. We were buddies, remember?
NOOB SAIBOT : I tolerated you. I do not like you.
(Y/N) : We’ll that’s just hurtful.
(Y/N) : Come on. Say it. Just once.

KANO : You got yourself a death wish.
MILEENA : Come dance with me.
(Y/N) : How about no?
MILEENA : Then I’ll make you.
(Y/N) : I’m kinda into the whole vampire thing.
SKARLET : I am no vampire you mistake.
(Y/N) : Ouch. That wasn’t even necessary.
JOHNNY CAGE : You and me would make the hottest couple in Hollywood.
(Y/N) : I’d rather die than be caught dating a white American man.
JOHNNY CAGE : Death over dating me? Seriously?
(Y/N) : Now that I think about it, Takeda is kinda cute.
JACQUI BRIGGS : Don’t even (Y/N).
(Y/N) : What? I said I was thinking it.
JACQUI BRIGGS : Don’t say it…
(Y/N) : Okay I won’t….your dad’s kinda hot -
JACQUI BRIGGS : Stop it!
(Y/N) : To what do I owe this displeasure?
D’VORAH : The Kahn wants you. Alive.
(Y/N) : The Kahn will be disappointed then.
(Y/N) : *shape shifted into Shang Tsung* Your soul is mine!
SHANG TSUNG : I sound nothing like that!
(Y/N) : *back to normal* Sure you don’t…
SINDEL : You are too weak for Shao Kahn.
(Y/N) : And yet…he wants me more than you.
SINDEL : A fatal mistake he has made.
KITANA : Tell Kung Lao I am not interested.
(Y/N) : Because you’re going to admit your undying love for me right?
KITANA : *laughs* You amuse me, (Y/N).
CASSIE CAGE : So do you like girls or boys?
(Y/N) : I like whatever looks good.
CASSIE CAGE : That is such a ‘you’ answer.
CASSIE CAGE : Come on, admit it. You like him a little.
(Y/N) : He keeps sending human hearts at my door. No!
CASSIE CAGE : Who knew Shao Kahn was a romantic?
(Y/N) : You know you want me.
JAX BRIGGS : Tuh. Not exactly my type.
(Y/N) : What I gotta do? Get a cheap blonde wig?
KABAL : Fighting me won’t make you gain all my moves.
(Y/N) : That is literally how it works.
KABAL : Ah shit.
SHAO KAHN : I will kill all my concubines just to have you.
(Y/N) : Why doesn’t anyone normal want me?
SHAO KAHN : You did not deny me.
SHAO KAHN : Earthrealm is wasting your power.
(Y/N) : Let me guess, you have better use for it?
SHAO KAHN : More than you know.
(Y/N) : Tell your scream queen wife to leave me alone.
SHAO KAHN : Her jealousy is its own weapon.
(Y/N) : How the hell did the tyrant want me?!
(Y/N) : Stop sending me human hearts in a box. It’s weird.
SHAO KAHN : What would you like for me to do?
(Y/N) : Not send me human hearts???
(Y/N) : How come you’re not my mentor and Raiden is?
FUJIN : Because we wouldn’t be able to go through one lesson without you flirting.
(Y/N) : I can’t help it if you’re hot.
(Y/N) : I’m ready to be blown away Fujin. Get it? Because you control the wind. And stuff…
FUJIN : Yes, (Y/N). I get it.
(Y/N) : Good. Let’s tussle.
(Y/N) : 50 bucks says I beat you.
FUJIN : Are you sure you want to lose all your money?
(Y/N) : Oh you think you’re the funny one here?
FUJIN : Ignore Shao Kahn’s advances, (Y/N).
(Y/N) : You say that like I’ve been hanging around with him.
FUJIN : After finding out about Sindel, I don’t know what to expect.
FUJIN : Your power is most impressive.
(Y/N) : *giggling* I take that like you’re flirting with me.
FUJIN : You take everything I say as me flirting with you.
NIGHTWOLF : You are a powerful warrior, (Y/N).
(Y/N) : *giggling* You make me blush, Nightwolf.
NIGHTWOLF : Show me what you can do.
(Y/N) : If your name isn’t Nightwolf then what is it?
NIGHTWOLF : I will never hear the end of it if I tell you.
(Y/N) : Aw. Don’t be shy, Nighty.
OTHER INTROS MENTIONING YOU
LIU KANG : (Y/N) says she likes you better than me.
KUNG LAO : Smart and beautiful. What doesn’t she have?
LIU KANG : The sense to realize I am the better one.
SHAO KAHN : I will have (Y/N) and take over Earthrealm.
KUNG LAO : Tuh. Don’t think you’re her type.
SHAO KAHN : Says the one who gets rejected for Liu Kang.
LIU KANG : You know…(Y/N) doesn’t seem like your type.
KANO : She wasn’t personality wise but body wise she was.
LIU KANG : You are truly insufferable, Kano.
SINDEL : That pretender has gotten under your skin.
SHAO KAHN : I don’t need you of all people to tell me that.
SINDEL : That rat will die where she stands.
SCORPION : Your ex will not stop showing her affections for me.
KANO : She’ll fuck anything with a pulse.
SCORPION : She dated you. I expect that.
RAIDEN : (Y/N), keeps asking about you.
FUJIN : Really? What has she said?
RAIDEN : Do not fall for a mortal, brother.
JOHNNY CAGE : We all know you wanna bone (Y/N), dude.
NIGHTWOLF : I can’t tell if you’re (Y/N) impersonating Cage or if that’s really you.
JOHNNY CAGE : Really? We act that much alike?
JADE : How are you friends with (Y/N)?
KITANA : She’s not as bad as you think she is, Jade.
JADE : I highly doubt that.
FUJIN : Stay away from, (Y/N).
SHAO KAHN : I am not threatened by an air bender.
FUJIN : You should be.
SONYA BLADE : (Y/N) is not your friend, Cassie.
CASSIE CAGE : Can’t you put your beef in the past? She’s cool.
SONYA BLADE : Once a black dragon, always a black dragon.
TOWER ENDING
I’m pretty much a badass so it was expected that I was the one to defeat Kronika. There was one thing I wasn’t sure about. The hourglass.
Changing history would mean the relationships I’ve made along the way would be forgotten. And I would go back to being the evil bitch in the Black Dragon.
In the new timeline, I made it exactly how it should be. Liu Kang and Kung Lao heroes. Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, and the others casted away like they never existed.
Everything was supposed to be peaceful.
I started to feel a newfound boredom. Because there was no chaos and I made everything perfect, there was nothing. Absolutely nothing.
The people I’ve once cared about had no recollection of me and I didn’t know what to be. The only reason why I was one of the good guys was because of the people that were near and dear to my heart.
So I did what I do best, I played the bad guy.
And damn does it feel good to be the bad guy again.
A/N : part 2 or mk 1 next?????

(Not a one shot but over all just headcanons plzz ☺️)
Hello there anon! Thank you for such a cute request <3
While I do love my headcanons I hope you don’t mind a bit of predetermined context as to why the reader left at first!
Missed you more than you know.

♡ - It’s not like you wanted to leave your friends (Leaning more towards found family at this point really), but you wanted to pursue your own goals! And he— well, your lover.. Couldn’t just up and leave with you. He had to attend to his own duties as a mentor!
♡ - Since you were little, you’ve always wanted to travel. You were an artist, and your goal was to draw as much fauna as you could in your quite short life. Wukong had helped you a ton— especially while he was courting you! His gifts were often messily put together flowers and saplings, right at your window! At some point, your small apartment was your own personal nursery.
♡ - But he couldn’t just give everything to you and call your dreams off. You wanted to actually see fauna thriving under the hands of Mother Nature! To not just sketch the specimen but the surroundings as well, the wildlife. You grew warm and fuzzy just thinking of it.
♡ - So after a full year of preparation, you had finally taken your long awaited leave in pursuit of your dreams; Giving your simian one last kiss, you bid him goodbye. The way in which his tail was securely wrapped around your wrist slowly softened in defeat as you turned away.
You knew that if you looked back, you’d never be able to leave.
♡ - Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Romania, Italy, Croatia— and so many other destinations had been just what you’ve been dreaming of. Europe was just as beautiful as you’ve read! If not more so. And one sketchbook had grown to 3, 4 if you cared to count the pages which were half filled.
♡ - And every night (At least every night where he wasn’t busy himself), Wukong would telepathically communicate with you! You just called it spiritual face time and chose to call it a day.
♡ - While you’d ramble about whatever interesting interactions or discoveries you’ve made, Wukong would keep you updated on how everyone was doing. An improvement in MK’s technique, Mei fixing up a new scooter she had found, etc.
♡ - And every night, after you’ve wished each other good night— he’d never forget to mention just how empty flower fruit mountain felt without you.
“I love you,”
“I miss you more every day you’re gone,”
“Your warmth, that laugh, the way your cheeks brighten at my cheesy comments.”
“I wish you were here with me right now. Heh, everyone does.”
♡ - After what felt like an eternity; you were more than satisfied with your work and began heading home! You couldn’t wait to tell him in person everything you’ve accomplished, and just how satisfied you were with your numerous sketches, watercolors, and inked works you’d soon frame all over your abode in remembrance.
♡ - Walking into your apartment for the first time in ages made your heart soar the minute you saw what surrounded you.
Your flowers, shrubbery, and plants had all been taken care of to near perfection. Not a single vine or leaf had wilted since your departure.
♡ - Your partner had tenderly cared for each of your greenery with such pristine care that you thought they even looked better than they had before— blooming bright and beautifully even when it wasn’t in season.
♡ - It seemed like you weren’t alone in the apartment as well, turning your head to see the Monkey King himself finishing up watering your pitcher plants.
♡ - And making eye contact, you noticed the way his jaw hung slack— as if he was being delusional and you were simply a figment of his imagination.
“Hey, hey, don’t overwater it! It’s spilling all over the floor!” You had urgently exclaimed, rushing over to snatch the watering can from his gentle hold and place it on a flat surface.
(It was a ceramic white duck, by far one of your favorites out of the many which were just stashed away in your closet.)
A puddle seemed to have already been made in between you two— but you couldn’t help but giggle in his obvious stupor.
Wukong’s voice was seemingly breathless, speaking in almost a whisper.
“You’re back, for real?”
Before you could even muster a response, you found yourself lifted in the air— then back in his loving embrace.
“I am, Wukong. I’m back.”
♡ - A week had passed, and within it you were more than happy to tell him and everyone else about your travels / experiences. It was practically expected— being gone for so long only leaving so much room for stories to tell.
♡ - What wasn’t expected, however, was the absolute clinginess of Wukong since your return. He hadn’t left your side once if it was in his control. Training and personal duties aside, you never spent more than 10 minutes of free time without being interrupted by his boisterous nature.
“Honey, I’m home!”
♡ - Once, you had to go into the shopping district for produce. The fruits had seemed especially delicious! You couldn’t leave without your mate however, as he had chosen to shape himself into a butterfly just to inspect what you were buying. Totally just that, not like it was anything else!
♡ - You’ve even caught MK and Mei sneaking around you at times where you thought it was just you and Wukong. Not that you could blame them, though. Anyone would be interested if they knew the great sage couldn’t get enough of you, being around you, all that mumbo jumbo.
♡ - Nights were spent either in your own bedroom or on the floor of his shack, coddled by both him and the many other monkeys which called Flower Fruit Mountain your home.
It was the same as always; tail curled around you ankle, an arm snaked around your waist and his soft breathing muffled into your hair.
You whispered into the darkness of your room—
“Did you really miss me that much?”
You didn’t expect an answer so quick to come from his mouth.
“More than you know.”

[MK X READER] New Era - Chapter .016
first part | previous part | next part
NOTE:
Not much to say here but, I hope you guys enjoy this one! Still trying to get back in the groove of updating quicker, but with college life comes more responsibilities I'm afraid haha. I think in this chapter there will be something some of you guys have been waiting for a while now :)!
FROM THE EYES OF SOMEONE WHO DOES SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT
“You don’t have to do this with me.”
“I don’t mind.” You replied, not even bothering to look up from the recount of events you were writing. You felt Sonya Blade’s gaze bore into you. From how intense it felt, you understood why she was so respected in her field. If she had magic powers, you would have guessed she would have had magic beams that shoot from her eyes.
Even without looking at her, you could tell she had a concerned look on her face. One that you’ve experienced plenty of times lately, not just from her either. While touched, you were feeling horrible lately about it all. “I’d have to do this eventually, I expect, plus I would feel awful leaving you to do this alone.”
It was the day after the showdown with Shao Khan. Well, to say the day after was rather misleading. It was just barely midnight, the new day having just barely rolled in. And here you were, sitting in a Special Forces office with your friend, Sonya Blade, writing up a report of events that had gone down the day of the whole affair.
You hadn’t eaten, slept, or even bathed. You still wore the tattered clothes, all scratched and messy from being tossed around. Dried blood still stuck to you like glue. But that was by choice. You didn’t want to spend a moment too long by yourself to let your thoughts creep in about what happened in the last twenty four hours. You suppressed a shiver at the idea.
If you were going to be forced to think about it, you’d rather do it doing something productive, and not by yourself.
You didn’t want to even think about what would happen if you let whatever happened truly soak in.
“You sure you don’t want to go back with Raiden?” Sonya inquired, her words carrying a sense of caution. It was odd to hear from the usually bold and blunt woman, but it was charming to hear her be empathetic towards you. You set down your pen, setting it aside. You had a feeling this would be a talking break.
“No, I can contact Lord Raiden myself whenever we’re done here.” You said, lifting your gaze to meet her eyes. The concerned look you had imagined to be on her face felt like an understatement now. The usually guarded, professional woman felt like an open book. Or maybe, you’ve gotten better at reading her after the couple of years you’ve gotten to know her for.
You weren’t ready to face Raiden yet. You weren’t sure why, but the thought of facing the thunder god made your stomach churn. You felt guilt at just the thought of having to look at him. So many people had died, many people you might have been able to save if you had just stayed behind.
“You should really rest.” The blonde urged, her eyes scanning you. You held back a small pitiful laugh. The woman in front of you was a workaholic, it was strange to hear her tell you that. And yet, from the way she looked at you, you could tell you looked like an utter wreck. Your fingers brushed your cheek, and you wondered silently just whose blood was on your fingertips.
“I wish I could, Lieutenant.” You replied. You just noticed how exhausted your voice sounded. It was like you had dragged yourself out of the darkest pits of the netherrealm, which probably wasn’t too far off. Your fingers drummed on the wood of the desk, trying to fill the silence of the room. Your eyes looked around before you settled them back onto Sonya. “Can I just be honest for a moment?”
“Anytime.” She reassured you. You saw her straighten out her back, making her perfect posture just that more pristine. Your eyes seemed to drill into your own, as if she was trying to reach into your soul. You couldn’t imagine how intimidating she’d look if she were to be interrogating someone.
“I don’t think I can rest until I know that our friends are avenged.” You admitted. Even with your admission, the weight on your shoulders didn’t lighten. If anything, it felt like it got a bit heavier, as if the weight of your ambitions had finally settled in. Sonya nodded, though the concerned look on her face did not change. “I don’t know how, but I know there’s some way to honor their deaths.”
“That sounds honorable, and I completely understand.” Sonya began, her words slow and deliberate. You knew from the way she spoke, she completely understood. She never talked about it too much, but she had alluded before to you that she had been tracking down some asshole because her partner had died. You looked at her, and you saw her hesitate. “You shouldn’t let your life be dictated by something like that though.”
Even as she said it, you knew she felt awful for being a hypocrite.
“I know you speak from a place of kindness and experience, Sonya.” You said. You leaned forward, resting your weight on your forearms. “But I don’t know if I can heed your words.” A sigh left your lips, and you felt your shoulders slump forward. Exhaustion was clawing at you, threatening to drag you down. “I have to at least avenge Kung Lao and Liu Kang. I know Shao Khan’s dead, but I would feel so useless if I couldn’t avenge both of their deaths.”
“You think Shao Khan killed Liu Kang?” Sonya inquired. You saw her eyes widen slightly, and she shifted a bit in her own seat. You lifted an eyebrow, uncertain why she would ask that sort of thing. You nodded solemnly.
“Of course he did, who else would? I’m certain you saw it too. You and Johnny both arrived on the rooftop before me.” You reminded her. “When I got there, he was dead already” You felt yourself tremble, the guilt within yourself threatening to spew out of you. “By the gods, if I had been a little faster, maybe, just maybe I would have been able to save him.”
You knew you weren’t just talking about Liu Kang.
“Hey.” The lieutenant spoke up, snapping you out of it before you could possibly spiral. Her eyes scanned you again, a torn expression on her face. She then stared deeply into your eyes. Her mouth opened, then she hesitated. Whatever she was about to say, you could never guess as she then proceeded to cringe before she got the words out. “Did…did you talk to Raiden about any of this?”
“No.” You admitted. And you weren’t planning to. You knew the god would disapprove of your plan, and you weren’t letting him change your mind. While you knew Liu Kang held some resentment towards the thunder god before he died, you didn’t. But you did feel like, perhaps, some decisions that you could make would be best without his influence. “I’m not going to tell him either.”
“I see.” Sonya said, her tone now awkward. There was a tension in the room, one that you couldn’t quite identify the reason behind. You looked back down at the report, trying to distract yourself amidst the silence that lingered in the air. “Hey, how about we just finish these reports up then head to bed, how does that sound?”
“I…” You began. The thought of going to bed, all alone with the memories of what had just happened, nearly sent a shiver down your back. You couldn’t suppress the goosebumps that covered your skin. But still, you couldn’t deny the fact that sleep did sound pleasing. You weren’t certain if you could stay awake for much longer. “I think that sounds fine.”
“Good, let’s wrap it up, I think we both need the rest.” Sonya nodded. She picked up her pen with a bit of renewed vigor. Then she paused and looked at you. “And hey,” She said your name, “if you ever need to talk about all this with someone, I’m here for you, okay?”
For what felt like the first time in forever, you smiled.
“Okay.”
Waking up this time was not dramatic like before, but it was not quite calm either.
Your eyes slowly opened, as if you were trapped within honey. You lifted a hand over your chest, your fingertips touching where your heart lay. It ached dully, as if remembering the memory along with you and was reminded of the pain of losing those you once cared for. All that left your lips for a moment was a forlorn sigh.
Your mind lingered on the blonde that had been so prominent in your last memory. Sonya Blade. This was the first time she had been prominent in your visions. She was not a foreign person to you, you remembered her as the ex wife…or wife, you weren’t quite sure. Not to mention, she had appeared at the tournament as well as the rooftop confrontation.
You rolled over to the side of the bed, staring at the ground. She was one of the few you had remembered but seemed not to be present in this world you now lived in. You squeezed your eyes shut, trying to recall other people you haven’t seen yet, assuming they even existed.
Nightwolf, Jackson Briggs, Fujin…several other names drifted in and out of your head.
Why have you not met them? This question buried itself in the back of your mind. It was always a question you’ve asked yourself. Some of the names you’ve had these questions about you’ve met, but it was odd these people who seemed to become more and more dominant in your memories seemed to be missing.
Was there a reason for that? Did these people even exist at all? Or were they replaced or missing, just like…
You felt your chest ache again without even finishing your thought. You pressed your hand to it, as if it would help soothe the pain. All it did though was allow you to feel the slow rhythmic thuds of your heart. You were still alive and kicking, that was for certain.
“No use lingering on it.” You muttered to yourself. It didn’t sound confident. Instead, it sounded almost defeated. Still, you took in stride and forced yourself out of bed. You didn’t have the time to think about all that and go through the heart ache. You took pause for a moment, your body recognizing the irony of the situation before your brain did.
You sounded just like your past self.
You let out a small chuckle, shaking your head. Some things never change, do they? You fought back the sinking feeling in your stomach and continued on with your morning routine. Like you said, it was best not to think about it, even despite what your gut told you.
By the time you walked outside your door, you heard the familiar sound of heels. You looked up to see the confident stride of Kitana. Her posture was even more pristine than usual.  Yet there was something off. You glanced at her face, and for a moment you saw an undertone of guilt on her face even with her head held high. The moment her eyes locked with yours, that guilt was hidden away as if it were not there in the first place.
“Good morning.” The princess greeted, the professional looking smile placed on her lips. You felt your eyebrows furrow, and for a moment you considered asking what was wrong. Then, in the next you reconsidered. Not only were you barely acquaintances, she was royalty. Any words close to asking her of her troubles died on your tongue.
“Good morning.” You returned her greeting, wiping away your concern. Her eyes scanned your face, and for a moment, you wondered if she was going to question the look on your face. But instead she simply nodded and walked towards you, waiting patiently for you to join her side. “Today we are watching the match in the Hanging Gardens, correct?”
“Indeed.” She confirmed, glancing at you.
“Oh, your sister, Princess Mileena is fighting today.” You said aloud, eyes widening. A small smile spread on your face, wondering how it would be like to see the princess in action. You glanced over, and caught the sight of Kitana’s eyes widened a bit. Her smile turned a bit strained, much to your confusion. She hesitantly nodded.
“Yes she is.” She told you. Yet there was a tone to her voice that made your eyebrows raise. It was barely perceptible, the way her voice hesitated. But still, from your memories, you caught onto the subtleties within her voice. Maybe you were closer to her in your past life than you thought. Either way, it was not the same here so you could not ask. But there was definitely something off with how short her responses were.
“I’ll enjoy watching the fight, I cannot say I’ve ever seen royalty fight before. In Earthrealm, there isn’t much royalty left there, and if there is, not many, if at all, fight like Outworlders do.” You informed the princess. She nodded, seeming vaguely aware of that fact already. “Do you fight and spar often with others?”
“We spar and train often.” Kitana replied, her shoulders rolling back slight to make her perfect posture impossibly more pristine. “As for actually fighting, we only do so when necessary.” You supposed that made sense, after all, why would one need to fight unless necessary? Then again, she could always be lying to save face. After all, why would a princess disclose her empire in a state of distress?
Then again, Outworld wasn’t always subtle about its fighting habits before, maybe it was the same here. You remembered the state that the Outworld you once knew was in. It was…odd to think this world held the same name as the more bloodier version of it. Then again, from what you recalled, this world seemed more similar to Edenia.
What did happen to Edenia anyways in this world? You weren’t certain if that was taboo to ask. After all, in the past world, it had been conquered and merged. Would asking it be rude? You glanced over to the princess, noting her attitude. She seemed to be in her head about something, even if she was doing well at attempting to conceal it. You supposed it would be for the best to not ask right now.
Maybe you could ask Liu Kang about it.
“Do you and your sister spar often?” You asked, keeping up with your questions to show interest and civility. Kitana pursed her lips, pondering over your question for a bit. After a moment, she nodded.
“We do, occasionally.” The princess replied. There was another pause, considering her words carefully once more. You didn’t try and question it much. Perhaps she was simply erring on the side of caution. You were a friend of Raiden’s. Maybe she thought you were trying to get more information on her sister to give Raiden some last minute tips. “We tend to spar more with the Umgadi more than anything.”
”I was not aware that they sparred with you on top of protecting the royal palace.” You said, glancing over to an Umgadi guard that was further down the hall. Upon reflection, the Umgadi reminded you a bit of the Lin Kuei, but only in the vaguest sense. Still, it was nice to make a mental connection to something from home.
”The Umgadi are responsible for plenty of things.” Kitana replied. One of her hands gestured to the guard down the hall you had been previously looking at. “Guarding the palace, sparring with us, making sure everything runs smoothly and properly. Being an umgadi is a lot of pressure but it is an honorable job.”
Ah, now it definitely reminded you of the Lin Kuei.
”I respect them for that.” You nodded, sending the guard you passed by a grateful smile. She returned that small smile for a few moments before returning to a more stoic look. “Your Umgadi reminds me of a clan back in Earthrealm.” You told her. “I will say though, that clan is not composed entirely of women.”
”A shame.” The princess said, and for a moment, you could detect genuine pity in her tone. Her mouth opened, probably to ask a question, but then the both of you arrived outside in the hanging gardens. You spied a little farther off was all three of the thrones of the royal family. You rose your eyebrows, wondering if the princess would sit down before the fight, but you chose to not question it. It was probably put there out of respect. “It seems we are here.” Kitana said, her shoulders relaxing just a touch. Her eyes met yours before nodding. “Enjoy the match.”
And with that, she walked off,
“Glad to see you here early as usual.” You commented, walking up to Raiden, Kung Lao, and Liu Kang. You watched as the champion let out a embarassed chuckle, his cheeks flushing for a moment. You smiled at him, trying to reassure him after your little joke. “No need to look so clammy, I was simply joking.” You told him.
“I know.” Raiden said, avoiding eye contact with you for a few moments before he managed to wrangle his eyes to focus on you. Despite this, his face was still a little pink. On top of it all, a small sheepish smile was placed on his lips. You stared at it, admiring it for a moment. It was a nice sight. “I can hardly believe I’m going to fight a princess.”
”You mean you’re going to win against a princess.” Kung Lao spoke up, walking over to put himself right by your side. He flashed you a grin, crossing his arms as usual. He tilted his head to his friend. The confidence Kung Lao displayed was akin to someone who was going to partake in the fight rather than watch it. You watched as Raiden’s grin grew, seeming to absorb the positive feedback from both of you.
“Indeed, you are ready for this match.” Liu Kang reassured Raiden. The champion nodded. “Princess Mileena is very skilled, but we have provided you with the information necessary for the tide to be in your favor.” You nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly with the god’s words. You couldn’t have put it any better yourself.
“You’ve taken down five others before today, Raiden.” You told him, displaying your hand out to show him with your fingers the amount. “All of them were skilled in their own right. Do not treat this match any differently simply because you are to spar with royalty. Just focus on yourself and your own techniques and you’ll be fine.”
”I will do my best.” Raiden told you all, looking around. You felt better seeing a more confident man in front of you. Not only for the sake of the world, but it was nice to just see the man understand that he was indeed strong in his own right. It was a far cry from the beginnings of your lessons. It was heartwarming really.
Time passed, and you all discussed tactics and techniques to keep Raiden focused on the match ahead. You were only interrupted when Johnny Cage strode in and let out a low whistle and commented how this would be the perfect place to shoot an action scene, or even a romantic walk at night.
”All I’m saying is that people would kill for this type of place to shoot at. It’s the perfect set.” The actor said. He held his hands out, creating a box to frame the area. “Just look at that bench, perfect place to hold an important scene. That’d be the money shot right there.” You held in a chuckle, seeing the very bench you and the princess had been sitting on for a few nights now.
“Good luck, I doubt you’d be able to ever let a film crew here.” Kenshi commented, his arms crossing. He shook his head, letting out a dismissive sigh at the mere idea of Johnny even attempting to negotiate with the Empress to let them film here. You had to agree, the idea was rather farfetched.
”Oh they will, once I turn on the Cage charm.” Johnny boasted, grinning wickedly as he continued to survey the area with a careful gaze as if he were planning out the scenes he would shoot here. Which he probably was, given how he was muttering under his breath. You supposed you could respect his ambition to keep on the consistent grind.
Then, a little after that, the Empress arrived.
It was odd seeing her flanks empty of the sisters. But even without her daughters, the confidence and nobility she exuded caught your attention. She strode through the crowd before sitting upon her throne. You watched carefully, your eyebrows knitting as you watched her walk in alone. Where was Kitana? You had see her earlier, so he absence didn’t quite make sense to you.
You tried to brush those thoughts away as Sindel settled down comfortably for a moment, scanning the area before landing her eyes on Raiden. You stood at attention by Liu Kang’s side, ushering the others to stand with the others.
“You continue to surprise, Raiden.” Sindel complimented, her posture as perfect as Kitana’s was earlier. “Among others, you have defeated Kotal, Motaro, and Sheeva. Only two fights remain.” There was the smallest of pauses before she continued. “Are you ready, Earthrealmer?” There was a gleam of confidence within her eyes that seemed to have been revived.
”I am, Your Majesty.” Raiden said, his confidence from before still not faltering despite the renewed vigor.
“Then next you will face my daughter…” You heard the familiar clacking of heels. Your eyebrows furrowed as you turned to look at the source of the noise. “Kitana.” Bewildered beyond measure, you watched as the princess you weren’t expecting walked in. Two folded up fans were gripped in her fists as a mask adorned her face.
Had you not been so perplexed, you would have caught on earlier how similar her walking in with such ferocity looked. But alas, you were too caught up in your thoughts. Why was Kitana going to fight? Was this a trick from Outworld to try and trip up Raiden? Thoughts like this pervaded your mind as the little clues you had brushed aside fell into place.
Mileena’s discomfort at the mention of a match, not to mention her whole general attitude last night along with Kitana’s strange dance around the mention of her sister fighting Raiden seemed to stick out like a sore thumb in your memories. You almost felt foolish for not seeing it earlier.
Had Sindel intended to intentionally swap out Kitana for Mileena to gain the upper hand? That would certainly explain why the elder sister was upset last night, but still, the mere idea of that felt…scandalous. You fixtated your eyes on the Empress as Liu Kang, who was a little more lost than you were, stepped up in between the would be fighters.
”Your Majesty, this is unprecedented.” Liu Kang spoke, his words slow. It was as if he were trying to find the right words to voice his confusion without trying to display distaste at the current events. “Raiden’s next opponent should be your heir.” He gestured to the throne beside Sindel where Mileena usually sat.
”Mileena is unavailable.” The Empress replied smoothly. She seemed unphased by the events and by Liu Kang’s reaction. You supposed that came with the experience of leading an empire for so many years. “She’s away on pressing imperial business.”
You felt your gut stir, as if to tell you that the Empress was lying. And honestly, you weren’t sure whether to believe your gut or not. You swallowed, trying to reason out the situation with what you knew. Maybe that was why the two had been acting so suspiciously? After all, it must be frustrating to be sent away so quickly before an important fight. And if it really was so urgent, it made sense that the heir would take care of it.
Still, your gut twisted and turned.
”But I have not prepared him to battle Kitana.” Liu Kang pushed back, pointing out the unfairness in the situation. You glanced at the masked princess who was holding Raiden’s gaze. From what you remembered, the two had very different fighting styles in your past life, which probably was true for this world. It made sense for Liu Kang to worry over it.
”He’s already demonstrated great skill.” Sindel replied, her voice and posture displaying jus how nonchalant she was over the whole thing. And yet, there was a quality to the way she spoke that caught your attention. It was like a challenge in her voice, like her scoffing and asking if Raiden was not as skilled as has shown if he couldn’t defeat a surprise. It was almost like an insult hidden behind a compliment. “Can he not improvise?”
”Do not worry, I can do this.” You heard the champion reassure the god who had been shaking his head. You were caught off guard, and soon found yourself smiling. The god nodded, accepting the courage Raiden displayed. It was good that even when Liu Kang showed doubt, Raiden was able to steel himself and push ahead.
”I will be no easier to fight than my sister, Earthrealmer.” Kitana boasted, walking back an appropriate distance. You watched as the fire god approached and stood by your side. You shot him a sympathetic glance. Traces of confusion still displayed on his face. You placed a hand on Liu Kang’s bicep and leaned over to whisper to him.
“He’ll be fine.” You told him, squeezing his bicep for a moment. Then, a moment later, you found yourself pinching the skin there. He may not be Kung Lao you once knew and understand the gesture, but it was something small you wanted to do. You watched as Liu Kang’s expression relaxed and he nodded, now trying to focus on the match.
“I suffer under no delusion, Your Highness.” Raiden replied, his voice devoid of any cockiness like the princess displayed. Instead, it was serious, taking her seriously just as he did for all of his other opponents. You admired the way he was able to lock in, mind focused entirely on the goal.
”I will win this fight.” Kitana said, making a promise. “For her, my Empress, and all of Outworld.” She took a step forward, before taking one step back into a fighting stance. There was a “sching!” as the blades of her fans brushed against each other, revealing the awe inspiring war fans she wielded.
Then, the match begun.
Kitana’s movements were elegant, it was like she was dancing more than she was dueling. It was almost like watching a hawk. Graceful, swift, but had deadly precision. The control she had over the fans she wielded along with the bits of magic she must surely have was beautiful to witness. Almost effortlessly, you watched as she would sometimes gain the upper hand and juggle your champion in the air, hit after hit with her fans and kicks.
For a moment, you were worried. Raiden seemed unable to adapt, being bewildered by the strange manner Kitana would throw out her fans, and not to mention the way she would use the air to her advantage much more than any of the others he had fought against. It was as if she thrived up there.
Still, even as he was battered and bruised, the man pushed through. He matched her movements, aiming to move as quickly as she was. He also threw in some of his own projectiles into the mix, deterring her from simply zoning him out from an advantageous position. Had you been an outsider watching this, you would have never guessed that Raiden was merely improvising these techniques against the surprise contender. It was honestly quite impressive.
After seeing the man turn the tide, you were not surprised to see him finally topple the princess. This feat had been much more earned, as both of them seemed exhausted after the fight. Between moments of heaving breaths, Raiden looked down at the princess before nodding and smiling respectfully to her.
“You fight well, princess.” He commended, a weary, but kind smile upon his lips. Pushing herself off the ground, Kitana looked up at her opponent. For a moment, there was a frustrated look as she took some deep breaths of her own. Despite her mask, she was still very expressive. You looked at the mask adorning her face, remembering how she used to wear it long ago,
“As do you, Earthrealmer.” Kitana replied, sharing the same respect Raiden had shown her. Her gaze scanned the man, assessing him one last time. “Surprisingly so.” She added on, a hint of reluctance and shock in her tone. It was as if despite being beat, she still could not understand how the Earthrealm champion had bested her.
“Excellent match.” Sindel praised, though there was a hint of strain within her voice. Both of the competitors turned their attention to the empress. You gaze focused in on her as well. Her displeasure at the outcome of the match as well hidden, but you could still see it. It was in the way her knuckles grew bone white despite supposedly being folded neatly within her lap. Her jaw was set as she smiled at the two.
While you weren’t certain still whether Sindel had intentionally swapped the princesses, you could see that she was not all too happy that Raiden had managed to improvise his way through the match. Your eyes darted back to the electric wielder. Had Mileena still been here to fight him, would he have fared as well as he did against Kitana?
“Tomorrow, young champion, you will face your final opponent.” She declared, looking up at the sky for a moment. “Then afterwards we shall hold a celebration. A festival, dedicated to whomever emerges victorious, whether it be Earthrealm or Outworld. We shall meet back out here for your final match.” The empress instructed, before swiftly walking off. You observed how the thrones were hauled back to the grand hall before a pinch on your bicep snapped you out of your thoughts.
“Finally today we get to hang out.” Kung Lao piped up, sending you a grin on the sly side. Your eyebrows rose. At first, you focused on the pinch. You caught yourself holding your breath, a wave of nostalgia and grief washing over you. You were perplexed on how he remembered the pinch, but then you remembered that he was probably mimicking the action you had done to him previously. “Oh don’t look so blue, it’s an honor hanging out with me.”
“When did we agree to hang out?” You asked, pushing away the thoughts of the old Kung Lao who your brain yearned for. Almost instantly, you regretted your words. His smile faltered, dropping. It was as if someone had kicked a puppy. Instantly, you put on a smile and placed a reassuring hand on his bicep, returning the pinch. “I was joking.” You quickly said. “I’d love to hang out with you.”
“Good.” Kung Lao replied, the glee returning to him. It was as if he hadn’t been affected by your question earlier at all. You weren’t sure if he had been acting or not, but you felt better seeing his smile. “I saw a lot of good food by the pier, I want to try them with you.” The former farmhand told you, beginning to lead the way to Sun Do.
“As long as we get to go around looking for one last gift.” You piped up, following him to the way to the city. Kung Lao looked back, a small look of surprise on his face.
“I thought you had been out yesterday with Kenshi to find the last gift?” Kung Lao asked. His eyes darted behind you, most likely gazing at where the others were before his eyes settled on you again. “By all means, I don’t mind. I know I have perfect taste.” He shot you a grin, making you chuckle and shake your head at his antics.
“I had been, and yes, I did find a gift. But I wanted to get something else too.” You informed the man with the razor hat. At this admission, his interest was piqued. He leaned over to you, his voice dropping to a whisper as if you were swapping a secret.
“Oh really now?” Kung Lao spoke, his voice dripping with excitement. A gleam was in his eye, and you spotted his dimples become more prominent as his smile grew. Your lips pursed as you observed them, you weren’t certain how to feel about even the little details like dimples being the same between the two worlds. “Well, if it’s a gift for me you can just tell me now, I don’t mind.”
“It’s not a gift for you, it’s a gift for Lord Liu Kang.” You told Kung Lao. You watched as his lips pursed into a pout. A disappointed look crossed his face, though this one was more playful than the last time. “Don’t worry, I already got your gift for you.” A look of surprise, as if he wasn’t actually expecting a gift, appeared on his face. You let out another laugh and picked up the pace, walking a bit faster as the man paused.
“Wait, really?” He asked, perking up as he made a light jog to catch up to you. You simply sent him a small smile, watching him think over your words. “What is it? When am I going to get it?” Kung Lao asked, his questions firing off like rapid fire.
“I already ruined the surprise by telling you that I got you one.” You said, pointing at Kung Lao as you walked side by side down the road. “I think I have the right to keep the rest of it as a surprise, no?” The man hummed, head tilting upwards as he contemplated his words. Then he looked back at you with a mischievous look.
“I guess you do, but that won’t stop me from wildly guessing what you did get me.” Kung Lao pointed out. You nodded, letting out another laugh. You supposed that would be fair enough. It wasn’t as if you could stop his curiosity anyways.
The rest of the walk was filled with light chatter. With Kung Lao, it always felt as if you could talk with him for hours on end. You tried not to linger on that fact that it felt like you were talking to an old friend. You had to stop that train of thought, after all, this man in front of you wasn’t…your Kung Lao. It was someone else, even if they were all too similar.
For a bit of the day, both you and Kung Lao roamed around the docks. The air was filled with the scent of street food. It made your mouth water as you took in a deep breath. Glancing over to your companion, you swore you even spotted the man drooling. You found yourselves hopping around the area, tasting and taking food as you pleased.
“This is amazing.” Kung Lao said, seeming to be lost in bliss as he indulged in the fried foods. You couldn’t help but agree. There was something special about this food, and it wasn’t just how cheap it was for the quality. As you let the taste melt onto your tongue, you couldn’t help but ponder over the seasonings within the dish. Did these type of seasonings exist back in Earthrealm? Or only here. “You think you could recreate this?”
“Maybe.” You said, still mulling over the unique taste it held. “They have different spices here, so it might be hard to recreate it one to one in terms of flavor.” You blinked in surprise as a bit of food was held in front of your face. Leaning back a bit, you shot a look of confusion towards Kung Lao as he brought the food closer to you.
“Try it!” He encouraged, a wide grin on his face. You looked between the man and the morsel of food, trying to work out what to do. Then, you leaned forward and ate the food from his fingers. You savored it, nodding as you closed your eyes and contemplated the flavors. A small hum left your lips. That was good. As you opened your eyes, confusingly enough, you were met with Kung Lao being…slightly flustered?
“Are you good?”
“Hm?” Kung Lao said, snapping out of his little daze. His cheeks were still dusted light with a bit of pink as he let out a laugh. “Yes! I’m fine.” He told you, though there was still that little tone to his voice that you couldn’t quite pin down. You rose your eyebrows, but shrugged. “Would you make me some of this food?”
“If I figure it out, sure.” You told him, finding it hard to say no to the hopeful look he sent you. You grinned at him, a slightly wicked look in your eye. “You know, you do still owe me for losing that bet.” You couldn’t help but let out a loud laugh at the pout he sent your way. “Did you think I would forget, Kung Lao?”
“Maybe.” He mumbled, looking away from you with a faux innocent look. You sent him a narrowed gaze, shaking your head. “I promise I’ll hold up to our agreement.” He said, putting a hand on his heart, an earnest grin on his face. You smiled and pinched his bicep.
“Good, because otherwise if you don’t, I’ll make sure to talk to the monks about making your training regiment harder. And that’s on top of what I plan on making you do.” You informed him, a sly smirk on your lips. “But if you remind me, I think I’ll consider lessening your punishment.”
The both of you toured the area for a bit longer until you passed a store selling fabrics. You took pause as you walked past it, at first dismissing it. Then, a familiar shade of red caught your eye. You wandered over, feeling compelled to inspect it. Picking it up gently, you marveled at the fabric.
It was nothing special, to be honest. It was just a very vibrant red headband. And yet, as you held it in your hands, you felt emotional over it. You slowly rubbed the quality material between your fingers, a small smile on your lips. You felt Kung Lao’s presence beside you, and nearly jumped upon remembering that he was here.
“You’re planning on giving Lord Liu Kang a headband?” Your companion inquired. He squinted at it, processing the piece of fabric you were holding.
“I know it’s a simple gift, but it just…speaks to me.” You explained, returning your gaze back down to the headband. It was nearly uncanny how close it looked to the red headband that your friend would always wear. Ever since you remembered the accessory, you’ve missed seeing the man in it. You’ve never brought it up though, since you it was a little odd. “What do you think? Is it a silly gift?”
“No.” Kung Lao said, and you were a little surprised at the certainty in his voice. You looked up and over to him. On his face was a determined look, as if nothing could convince him that this was a bad idea. You were comforted by the look. “I think it’s the perfect gift actually, good find.”
You stared at Kung Lao for a few more moments. Your heart squeezed at the idea that this Kung Lao agreed with the headband fitting just so well for Liu Kang. For a moment, you were tempted to ask him why he thought so. Was it just the idea that Liu Kang would look good in red? Or was it…something else? And yet, despite your longing, you restrained yourself. You didn’t want to seem so…silly.
“Yeah, I think I will get this.” You agreed. You walked up to the naknadan who was manning the shop. You were delighted to see you had some money left over. Maybe you could keep it, as a reminder of your travels here. You took the headband, and folded it neatly, tucking it away. You felt proud of yourself, feeling accomplished for finding all the gifts you wanted for your friends.
After a bit more wandering around the city with Kung Lao, you both eventually return back to the palace. You weren’t certain if you were going to go to dinner after a day full of tasting food, but you might for the sake of being with your friends.
Before you could walk up the stairs into the palace, you stopped. You grabbed Kung Lao’s hand, stopping him in his tracks as well. You noted his hand, and how it still was as soft as it was when you had felt it when you had shook his hand. The former farmhand turned around, sending you a curious look, though there was a bit of a blush on his face.
You weren’t certain why seeing that pink hue on his cheeks was so pleasing to you.
“I just wanted to thank you for accompanying me today.” You said, smiling at him. You felt your hand squeeze his, though you didn’t consciously think about squeezing his hand. “I had a lot of fun going around and trying food with you. Sorry it took so long for me to have some time to hang out with you. I hope today was worth it.”
“It was fun.” Kung Lao replied, a grin on his lips now. It was lopsided, as usual. You couldn’t help the little sigh that left your lips. “If you really want to make up for it, you could always forget about our little bet-” He noted the little glare you sent his way, and his smile grew. “Kidding! Kidding! But if you did want to make up for it, I would not be opposed to hanging out with you more often.”
“I would not be opposed to that idea either.” You replied. You stood there for a moment more, before you turned to go grab one of the ring boxes from your bag. You turned, inspecting the boxes more to see if you grabbed the right one before you held it out to the man. “Here, the gift for you, like I told you earlier.”
Kung Lao plucked the box out of your outstretched hand. Almost hesitantly, he let go of your hand so he could open the box with his other hand. You watched as surprise overcame his features as he inspected the ring with the pink gem was sitting in the center of the box. He glanced back and forth between you and the ring. A soft look was on his face as he placed it on.
“I like it.” He said, admiring the ring as it adjusted to fit perfectly upon his. “I see it matches yours too. Now we’re doubly matching.” Kung Lao pointed out, pointing between both the rings and the dragon motifs you both had. A smile that was a little smug appeared on his lips. “Why pink though? Not that I mind.”
“We’re all going to match soon, it was a ring set.” You explained. looking down to the little ring that you had on your hand. “And yes, the necklace you gave me…” You paused, grabbing the necklace to feel it, “it honestly did inspire me, so thank you. As for pink, well…” You trailed off, thinking back.
For a while now, you’ve associated Kung Lao with cherry blossoms. At first, it was because of how often you saw the petals fall near him at the Wu Shi. It was almost as if he was a magnet for them. But now, with you memories, it only seemed right. Much like many other things, it seemed to be a constant between your lives.
“I think it just fits. It’s the pink of cherry blossoms, which I think are very fitting for you, you always seem to be covered in those petals.” You answered, looking into Kung Lao’s eyes. Another softer look appeared on his face as he heard your explanation.
“I think it fits too.” Kung Lao admitted, glancing back down to the ring on his hand. A grin spread across his face before he grabbed your hand. “Now let’s go, I don’t want to miss dinner.” His tone was dripping with excitement, despite how much you both had eaten earlier. You nearly stumbled to keep up with his quick pace, but you let out a small laugh as you tightened your grip onto his hand to adjust yourself.
Never change, Kung Lao.
Tonight was an especially beautiful night in the garden.
The stars seemed to shine a little brighter. The skies seemed to be a little more vibrant, the bits of the purple sky swirling with the dark colors of the night sky. Not a cloud was in sight to block any bit of the view on display for tonight. It was like looking at a piece of art, just for you.
You sighed as you sat alone on the bench in the Hanging Gardens. You weren’t even certain why you were out here. Princess Mileena was out on imperial duties…supposedly. She probably wouldn’t be back until tomorrow. You supposed that you didn’t need her in order to appreciate the garden, but you also couldn’t deny it felt awfully lonely out here without someone to accompany you.
You weren’t sure how you caught the movement while looking up at the sky, but you spotted someone out of the corner of your eye. At first, you perked up. Maybe she was back early and sought your presence here. But as you turned, the figure you saw walking around the gardens was not the princess you were expecting. No, it was someone else.
In fact, it was someone you didn’t even recognize.
A man walked through the gardens. He held himself with grace, an air of elegance surrounded him. His hair, long and neatly tied, cascaded down and fell down his shoulders. A small smile appeared on his lips as he toured the area. You spotted a gleam of gold, and looking down, you saw a golden amulet with a large red gem in the center hanging off his belt.
As you inspect the stranger, your eyes locked with his. A look of faint surprise appeared on his face, before a smile replaced it. He strode over, and for a moment you felt awkward. You hoped you didn’t leave a bad first impression on this man.
“Hello there.” The man said, stopping a little bit away from you. One of his hands gestured to the spot next to you. “Are you waiting on someone?” He asked, his voice smooth just like honey was. You glanced at the spot, thinking of the princess for a moment, before shaking your head. Gracefully, he sat beside you. “I don’t think we’ve met, to whom do I have the pleasure?”
“We haven’t met.” You confirmed, nodding. You told him your name, eyes scanning the man up and down. No matter how much you inspected him, you could not glean anything from him. If anything, the slight buzzing in your head almost seemed to quell around him. Your lips pursed. Seems you’ve never met this man before in your previous life. “I’m just here for the tournament. I’m from Earthrealm, actually, I’m accompanying Lord Liu Kang and his companions.”
“Oh, the tournament. I had nearly forgotten about that.” The man said, his hands neatly folding in his lap. “I have been so awfully busy carrying out requests for the Empress, I have not had the time to observe. In fact, I’ve only come back tonight just to gather some materials before I go back to my laboratory. A shame, I would have loved to watch.”
“It has been rather exciting, our champion has nearly won all of the matches so far.” You said, trying not to outwardly brag to this stranger. You paused, thinking to the words he said. “You said you had a laboratory, are you a sorcerer, or a mage of some sort?” You asked, thinking back to how Rain had a laboratory of sorts within the Imperial Academy.
“I am.” The stranger replied. The smile on his lips grew slightly as he nodded. “I have the pleasure of being part of the royal court. As much of a privilege it is, it is labor intensive at times, I must admit.” He scanned you, looking up and down. “You sounded quite excited about that prospect, are you interested in magic?”
“I suppose I am.” You admitted. You lifted your hand, shifting it to display a webbed frog hand. “Though I’m from Earthrealm, I have some magic of my own. Back there, we don’t really have magic schools, it’s more commonly thought of as a myth there.” A small hum left the man’s lips as he nodded along. His hands locked in on your limb as it displayed the little feat of magic. If you weren’t mistaken, it almost seemed like he was quite impressed with the little display.
“Fascinating.” The stranger said, a tone in his voice you couldn’t quite place. Admiration, perhaps? That was the closest thing you could think of. “You can shapeshift, that’s your magic?” He asked, double checking your abilities with you. You blinked, nodding as you changed your hand once more, this time into a horse’s hoof. “Just animals, or are you capable of shifting into humanoids as well?”
“Just animals, I think. I’ve never really tried to transform into another humanoid, really.” You told him. You transformed your arm back, taking some time to mull over his question. You’ve never really…thought about humanoid transformation. Your magic was instinctual, so you’ve never really put much thought into it.
Was it possible? You’d have to explore that idea later.
“I think I’ve heard of you.” The man said. You blinked in surprise, furrowung your eyebrows as you looked at the man suspiciously. You doubted you have too much of a reputation to have random strangers hear of you before. “My colleague, Rain, has mentioned you before, I believe?” He said. You blinked, before you remembered.
Hadn’t Rain mentioned a sorcerer with talents like yours?
“Oh, Rain?” You said, repeating the name. The man nodded. “Ah, you must be the court sorcerer he mentioned!” You told him, a smile now across your features. You tried to think of his name, but found yourself coming up short. Ah, he had been interrupted before he said the name, didn’t he? You sent him an awkward smile. “Sorry, I don’t think he mentioned your name, what was it?”
“My name is Shang Tsung.” The sorcerer said, his smile growing more as he nodded. From the corner of your eye, you swore your saw the red gem in his amulet gleam for just a moment as he introduced himself. Must be the moonlight reflecting off. “It is an honor to meet you.”
“It is an honor to meet you too, Shang Tsung.” You said. The name rolled easily off your tongue. You folded your hands on your lap. “Would you do me a favor?” You asked, tilting your head as you looked at the man. His eyebrows rose, but the charismatic, polite look remained on his face as he nodded. “Could you tell me about magic? I love to hear about it.”
“It would be my pleasure.”
And that night, you think you made a new friend.

Descendant of the Lady Bone Demon: Part Two
(Part One) (Part Two) (Part Three)
Maybe they should’ve seen this coming. Maybe there were a few warning signs they didn’t pick up on. Looking back on it now, it’s pretty obvious, isn’t it? All those little things should’ve added up a long time ago.
The way the room grew silent and tense when you walked in, no matter how how exuberant it had been prior. How you manage to sneak up on everyone without even trying, as though you had no presence. The wide berth that strangers give you, even though they can’t explain why. That last one had been particularly strange for your friends. They hadn’t understood why people would treat you so coldly, not back then.
They understand now.
Tumblr media
MK has already had so much placed on his shoulders, and all of it was without his asking. The fate of his friends. The fate of the city. The fate of the world. Time after time, countless lives are placed into his hands, and he does his very best to bring them safely through the danger posed by ancient threats and lurking demons.
Once, living out the dream of being a hero had been fun. Back then, all he had to do was master a new power or bust down another bad guy, and then everyone laughed and went on with their peaceful lives. Back when every adventure ended before the day was over and he was back home just in time for Pigsy to start scolding him for being reckless.
But as he grows stronger, so too does his vast array of enemies. As he trains his body and masters his skills, all those who seek to oppose him are doing the same.
Which means higher stakes. More danger. More destruction. More lives on the line day by day. It means that every last friend and companion of his will end up finding themselves in danger just on account of being associated with him. His enemies are rarely noble, most of them willing to target his friends in an attempt to devastate his heart and mind, hoping to leave him mourning and unsettled. He thwarts these attempts one after another, always saving the day in the end.
His greatest fear is that a day will come where he falls short of such an accomplishment.
A fear that the Lady Bone Demon brings to the forefront of his mind. She brings this hidden terror to light, and exacerbates it.
“Foolish child. Do you really think that one person can save everyone from pain and suffering? Or are you truly arrogant enough to believe that your strength alone can forge a better tomorrow?”
She makes him want to be stronger. Smarter. Better. Good enough to protect anyone who’d ever be put in danger. Especially you.
“Y/N! Let’s hang out today! Come on, I’ve got my room set up for a Monkey Cop marathon!” He takes you by the hand, dragging you along after him with a big smile that he struggles to maintain. When he’s sad or upset, he turns to you. In turn, he makes it clear that you can always rely on him to protect you.
If he were a bit more mature, a little more confident and self-assured, he’d make for a wonderful older brother figure. He’s spontaneous, energetic, supportive… and entirely terrified that he might lose you.
That fear drives him to train harder, to work harder… to be someone you are truly and honestly proud of. To be someone you can rely on and turn to in any time of need. He tackles his training with a renewed vigor, all in preparation for the moment that you might need his protecting.
And now that said moment has come, he’s more scared than ever before. The person he fears most bears down on him as he stands in front of the person he fears losing most, and all he can do is hold strong.
“You will not stand between me and my destiny!” The Lady Bone Demon’s voice is furious, her eyes crackling with arcane energy.
The very same eyes that you have. MK doesn’t know exactly what started his suspicions, but your eyes are what confirmed his little hunch. The two of you are related in some way, he’s sure of it.
And with how insistent she is with getting her hands on you, it’s only a further nail into the coffin. There’s no denying that you and the Lady Bone Demon have some sort of connection. But what? Are you her descendant? Did she plant a seed of her essence into your forefathers long ago to ensure that some part of her would go on, and only now is returning to reclaim it? Are you simply powerful enough for her to see use in you? Does she think she could sway you to her side?
There’s a dozen explanations that could be true. However, he has no way to prove which one of them it is, because the Lady Bone Demon is staying tight lipped on why exactly she wants you, perhaps as to not give MK a chance to counter her plans.
It doesn’t matter, MK reminds himself. What she wants with you doesn’t matter. What matters is that she wants you, full stop. And if he can stop her and her well-intentioned plans, then he can save you and everybody else too. All he has to do is push a little harder.
And then?
Maybe he can just… forget about it all. Forget about the Lady. Forget about your nebulous ties to her. And everything can go back to the way it was, when he didn’t jump every time you spoke to him, when he could look into your eyes without feeling like someone had dumped ice down his shirt, when he could fall asleep next to you without waking up in a cold sweat.
He’ll forget all about it, burying it deep inside his brain.
And then things will go back to normal, with you safely under his protection.
Right?
Tumblr media
He knows right from the start. I sincerely believe that if someone was the Lady Bone Demon’s descendant, Wukong would be aware the very moment he met them.
A dread chill races down his spine the moment he see you, freezing him for just a second as he contemplates one of his worst fears coming true. The Lady Bone Demon is back.
Except… no, not really. That’s not her at all, is it? You’re just… some kid. With the exact same crushing spiritual pressure that she personally exerted. And the same eyes that she had.
Yeah, this isn’t a coincidence. There’s just no way. He goes off to do some digging, but not before subtly tasking MK with keeping an eye out for you while he searches for anything that could prove your ties to one of his greatest enemies.
And this is Sun Wukong we’re talking about, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. It doesn’t take him very long, whether through cleverness and trickery or sheer brute force.
Maybe the monkey demon twists a few heavenly arms to get the information he wants. Maybe he utilizes the 72 Transformations to eavesdrop on a keeper of records. Maybe he’s just got a sacred book of lineage hidden away in some pile of junk somewhere.
However he does it, he gets the job done well, with just the conclusion he’s looking for- you are indeed, of the Lady Bone Demon’s blood.
But Sun Wukong has come far from his days before Five Phases mountain. He’s not some vicious demon who bullies those around him, nor does he jump to outright murder as a solution for every last problem.
He’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, just so you can maybe prove yourself to him.
It starts with him crashing at your house without an excuse, he himself writing it off with a very unconvincing “bout of motion sickness” that would supposedly leave him incapable of comfortably riding his cloud back to Flower Fruit Mountain.
His true intention is to see what you’ll do while he’s “asleep”, laid across your couch with his head rested on a cushy pillow, tantalizingly propped-up for one who might wish to try and crush his skull or slice his throat.
Instead, you usher him to a cozy guest room, asking him to call you if he needs anything. He makes use of this several times, asking for food and water to see if you’ll poison it.
But you don’t. There’s no hand-made poison sourced from the Underworld slipped into his peach tea. No sacred knife hidden inside your sleeve. No Heaven-forged needles baked into the slice of pie you bring when he mentions being hungry.
You aren’t a scheming demon, he realizes. You’re just a good kid.
You remind kind to him, even as he intentionally tries to fray your nerves. You don’t snap or argue or whine, instead tending to his false needs with a smile on your face.
He drifts comfortably to sleep in the guest room, stomach satiated and his brain whirling. Before he passes out, he realizes with a pang of sympathy that he’s clearly the first person to have ever slept here. Stocked and furnished comfortably for anyone who might stop by and spend time with you… it’s instead been rotting without occupancy, left unused for what may well have been years.
You aren’t a bad person. You really, really aren’t. You’re just a good kid who clearly needs someone to quell the stomach-turning loneliness that finds you down each path you take.
At first, he decides to be that person out of pity. He stops by sometimes, ducking in to snag a bite from your fridge, engaging in a short but friendly conversation, watching sympathetically as the mere exchange of several sentences boosts your mood to healthy levels.
You start to anticipate his visits, making sure you have food and drink he’ll enjoy on hand. Lots of peach-filled pastries, to nobody’s surprise. Pies, tarts, cookies… it turns out that Sun Wukong has a pretty unabashed sweet tooth. He’s actually somewhat touched that you out in the effort just to make sure that he’ll have something nice to eat when he stops by.
Just as pity went to warmth, slowly that warmth comes to a peak, igniting.
Eventually, he starts taking you back to Flower Fruit Mountain to spend time with you there, trying to acclimate you to an eventual residency there with him to repay every kindness you’ve done for him.
There’s not a single pivotal moment where he realizes that he wants to keep you beside him, just a slow, day by day fall into platonic obsession. He gets attached, hard.
From your point of view, your kindness and determination to forge bonds with those around you has finally earned you a friend.
From his point of view, you’re a lonely, wayward child who needs someone nearby to protect and shelter you.
This is far from the truth, but his delusions grow by the day, in part an innocuous desire to repay your kindness, in part an unhealthy attachment to someone who has no hope of escaping from his grasp.
Really, though… if he did spirit you away, would you complain or argue? Fight or run?
Even if you did, there’s no way you’d get away from him. Just sit back, and let him take care of you, just the way you took care of him.
That’s what family does, after all.
Tumblr media
You’re another one of his weird kids. That’s where it starts and ends for Pigsy. You fit snugly between Mei and MK, forming a neat little trio that he wants to both throttle and hug. Just as often as you three make him feel like he’s heading to an aneurysm-induced early grave, you make him feel fulfilled and content. His noodle shop, his two best friends, his three high-energy goofy kids.
Pigsy is happy with the life he has. He’s happy with the life he’s provided for MK. He’s happy to see Mei overcome her insecurities with her family and gain their approval. He’s happy that Sandy has found peace and improved himself. He’s even happy when Tang comes to visit, though he’ll gripe about the man “freeloading” whenever he stops by.
It’s a strange, stressful life that he’s built for himself, but he wouldn’t trade it for the world.
A world he wishes was just a little kinder.
It has served him kindly enough, though. Success, family, friends, some degree of fame. Most things a person can want, Pigsy has in decent abundance.
His problem is the way it treats you.
You’re a good kid. You really are. You’ve been visiting since you were a child, and he’s watched you grow up. If it weren’t for Tang, you’d be his most frequent customer. (Because you actually pay for your food, he calls you his favorite customer, to Tang’s dismay) And because you’ve spent so much time here with him and his family, he has a pretty good feeling he understands you.
Is isn’t just the renowned food you’re coming back for. It’s the company, too.
You always come in alone and drag out your visits to last as long as possible. You make conversation whenever and wherever you get the chance, stretching out these moments of companionship for as long as you can.
You’re lonely. Not for a lack of trying, of course. You try to strike up conversations, try to reach out to others wherever you can. People seem consistently unsettled and unnerved in your presence, immediately looking for an out when you come around. No matter how kind you are or how often you try to make connection, you get left in the dust.
If you aren’t at Pigsy’s Noodles, then you’re alone. So you keep coming back, again and again. Not just for the incredible food, but for them.
For him.
It’s sad, but it warms his heart a little at the same time. You rely on him. Maybe he could go as far as to say that you need him. Who would he be, if he didn’t welcome you with open arms?
Pigsy wants you to be happy. He wants to keep you safe. And eventually, those feelings grind slowly towards wanting to keep you close.
And close he keeps you, there and then, and then, here and now.
Pigsy does not let go of you. Even as the manic wide-eyed man he only knows as “the Mayor” demands your unconscious body from him, talking about “bloodlines” and “destiny” and “the power she requires”, the chef refuses to be parted from you.
Since he can’t run, he has no chance but to stand and fight, wielding a nine-toothed rake with one hand and keeping you slung safely over his shoulder with the other. He’s never been good at fighting, so it isn’t truly an even match. He’s instead trying to block and dodge the Lady Bone Demon’s sycophantic servant, barely warding him off after each blow.
His efforts to hold out eventually do pay out, with MK stepping shortly in to knock the “Mayor” away from you both, punting him across the landscape and then into the ground from there.
Leaving Pigsy to weigh the options left before him. However, it’s not much as much of a struggle as one might assume. You’re a kid, he thinks to himself, holding you close as he examines your bruises and scrapes. You don’t need to know. What would it accomplish? Do you need to know why people fear you? Why they think of you as unapproachable? Why they run away from the kindness and warmth you offer?
Would it help you, to know the reason? No, Pigsy decides. It could only lead to trouble and heartbreak. What if you ran away from both yourself and your friends, and never came back for fear of hurting them? What if you lost the ability to trust yourself? What if you hurt yourself?
He can’t run the risk of losing you. From now on, he’s going to take a much more personal role in your life, very potentially bringing you to live in the restaurant with him and MK.
“You don’t have to worry about those two freaks, kid. Just let me look out for ya, from now on.”

Gaza's Gethsemane
Today is Maundy Thursday, when Christians remember Jesus’s Last Supper, his final meal with his closest friends before his arrest and execution by the Roman Empire.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, right now, in Jesus’ own homeland, millions suffer starvation and terror, displacement and death under Western-funded Israeli colonialism and continued military assault. Israel blocks food from reaching them, leaving Palestinians in fear that any "supper" they can scrounge up might be their last.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After their meal, Jesus led his friends into the Garden of Gethsemane, where he prayed in anguish, fearing all he was about to endure: criminalization, torture, and a painful public death.
Tumblr media
Jesus begs his friends to “stay awake” as he wrestles — just to be present, to make him feel a little less alone. How do we respond to Jesus’ plea by “staying awake” to Palestine’s current agony?
Tumblr media
"Cry" (2016) by Mohammed Almadhoun.
That question also leads me to ponder another: how does God join Palestinians in their agony? Where is God in their suffering?
Palestinian Christian Mitri Raheb seeks to answer this question of where God is in his 2015 book Faith in the Face of Empire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raheb looks at the history of the Palestinian region, from ancient times to today, as a long chain of different empires — from the Assyrians to the Romans, Ottomans to Western-funded modern Israel.
He says that this long history of occupation is what gave Palestinians the ability to notice God where those in power do not: among the powerless. It is this revelation, Raheb declares, that has empowered Palestinians — Jewish, Christian, and Muslim — to survive and resist Empire again and again.
Raheb writes about how in ancient times, the divine was made
“...visible and omnipresent in the empire with shrines and temples that represented not only his glory but also that of the empire. God’s omnipotence and that of the empire were almost interchangeable. He was a victorious God, a fitting deity for a victorious empire. At the other end of the spectrum there was the God of the people of Palestine, whose tiny territory resembled a corridor in Middle Eastern geography. ...This God was a loser. He lost almost all wars, and his people were forced to pay the price of those defeats. In short, this God did not appear to be up to the challenge of the various empires. His people in Palestine were forced to hear the mocking voices of their neighbors who taunted them, 'Where is your God?' (Ps 42: 3, 10). The revelation the people of Palestine received was the ability to spot God where no one else was able to see him. When his people were driven as slaves into Babylon, they witnessed him accompanying them. When his capital, Jerusalem, was destroyed and his temple plundered, they saw him there. When his people were defeated, he was also present. The salient feature of this God was that he didn’t run away when his people faced their destiny but remained with them, showing solidarity and choosing to share their destiny. Consequently and ultimately, Jesus revealed this God on the cross, in a situation of terrible agony and pain, when he was brutally crushed by the empire and hung like a rebellious freedom fighter. The people of Palestine could then say with great certainty [that their God] ‘in every respect has been tested as we are’ (Heb 4:15). For the people of Palestine this meant that defeat in the face of the empire was not an ultimate defeat. It meant that after the country was devastated by the Babylonians, when everything seemed to be lost, a new beginning was possible. Even when the dwelling place of God was destroyed, God survived that destruction, developing in response a dwelling that was indestructible. And when Jesus cried on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mk 15:34), that soul-rending plea was just the prelude to the resurrection…”
It is this revelation that God sides against empire, Raheb continues, that keeps the Palestinian spirit alive through horrible oppression. Though the world may call such faith foolish — how can you believe God is with you and that God will have the final say, when all evidence points to your abandonment and defeat? — it is wisdom to the oppressed. Raheb describes how this wisdom feeds Palestinian resistance, over and over across the millennia:
The art of survival and starting anew is a highly developed form of expression in Palestine, and one I see daily. People’s lives, businesses, and education are interrupted by wars and the aftermath of wars over and over again, and yet I witness people refusing to give up, taking a deep breath, and beginning again. Logically, it is foolish, and yet there is deep wisdom in such a course of action. I’m often asked by visitors how I can keep going. Everything seems to be lost, the land “settled” by Israel, the wall suffocating Palestinian land and spirit, the world silent, and hope almost gone.”
Raheb's answer to them is that God’s presence in and among the suffering, and God’s promised resurrection, of renewal in the face of all terror and death, is what keeps him and his people going.
As we enter into these final days of Lent, I pray for hearts and minds opened to witnessing God’s solidarity with and resurrection for Palestinians suffering imperial brutality. I pray that the Palestinians will survive as they always have — “afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Cor 4:8–9).

Hey marbles. I'm new around Tumblr and I'm still figuring out the mechanics. I tried to send a message but it wouldn't work, so I'm stuck doing a post. I love your headcannons, BTW, for Lego Monkie Kid and I had thought of something for a headcannon theme.
What if the S/O got kidnapped by a demon clan and was held for ransom and Wukong/Macaque/etc. have a set amount of time to get the ransom ready. The S/O manages to escape and returns to them just as they were reaching their breaking point.
What do you think their reactions are gonna be?

Wukong and Macaque With a Kidnapped! S/O
(Ahhh I loved this prompt!)
Wukong:
Tumblr media
Wukong’s breaking point was fairly quick, like a few hours after you were kidnapped and the note arrived at Pigsy’s.
The demon clan KNEW he was training MK to be his successor so of course they left it there.
The minute MK told him, he was already getting ready to find out where you were and fly to you on his cloud.
Of course, MK and his team told him they needed a plan before Wukong recklessly tried to find you.
They were in the middle of forming a plan at Pigsy’s, Wukong was pacing back and forth as MK explained the plan with his drawings, his ginger tail swaying back and forth as he was lost in thought.
He was mostly thinking of what he would do to the demons once he got his paws on them.
Wukong is usually patient with his student, but right now he just couldn’t help it this time around.
“Ugh, we don’t have TIME for this kid! I gotta go find them NOW!”
He was already on his way out the front door when he was met with your tired gorgeous face.
“Peaches!”
His arms wrapped around you as he pressed kisses all over your face, his tail shaping into a heart as he shouted praises and words of relief into the air.
“Oh thank the gods you’re okay, I was so worried I was never gonna see your gorgeous face again. You’re here! You’re safe! I love you, oh I love you!”
You tiredly smiled as he pepper kissed your cheeks, the other members of the team rushing over to you to also see if you were okay.
Luckily, you weren’t injured, they mostly just kept you alone in a dark cell and you escaped by the skin of your teeth.
However, Wukong doesn’t brush it off like you would think.
Once you were safe in his arms, he used a bunch of his clones to beat the demons into the ground.
He held you close to his chest that night, his grasp heavy around you as if someone was threatening to take you away from him.
He strokes your hair as you quickly fell asleep from how tired you were, smiling as he kissed your forehead.
“G’night peaches, you’re safe with me, always and forever.”

Macaque:
Tumblr media
Unlike Wukong, Macaque didn’t have anyone to rationally tell him to plan his next move.
So, he went straight to getting you back any way he could.
The minute he saw the note nailed to your door as he emerged from the shadows to visit your apartment, all Macaque could feel was raw rage.
The paper wrinkled in his tight grasp, letting out a primal growl and roar of sheer anger as he threatened every demon in town to figure out where you were.
He had never heard of this demon clan before, so why did those bastards have to take you?!
Nobody in Megapolis knew the clan or where you were, leaving the dark-haired simian to search for you on his own.
Macaque was exhausted, he had been searching for you for hours at this point.
His feet were killing him, but he didn’t care. He needed to find you.
He needed you here with him, he needed to see your beautiful face and your gorgeous smile again.
After hours of searching and the sun finally starting to rise, he finally decided to go back to his dojo to sit down and collect his thoughts before going back out the next night once again.
His leg thumped up and down as he interlocked his fingers while looking at the wood flooring, getting lost in his thoughts.
Oh what he would do to the clan after he found them, death would be too light of a punishment.
The shadows around him started to envelop him as his thoughts grew more violent and darker, just the thought they were laying even a finger on you was too much to bear.
His thoughts were interrupted as the door to his house was opened, his six ears twitched as he recognized your breaths.
The shadows withdrew as he rushed out of the dojo to you, seeing your tired face.
He pulled you into a tight hug, repeating praises over and over as his tail wagged from your mere presence.
“You’re okay, thank gods you’re okay. I swear, I’ll find them sweet cheeks. I’ll beat the absolute shit out of them for even looking at you, I promise. I love you, I love you so much…”
You held him back, thankful to be in his arms once more.
If you’re wondering, yes you’re boyfriend did indeed keep his word.
After you told him where you were kept that night, he used his giant shadow smoke monster to grab them and punch them all into the dirt.
Laughing, he bore his fangs at the idiots that even dared to touch you.
“You guys got guts, I’ll tell you that much! But guts get you nowhere, I’ll show you what happens when those guts of yours decide to fuck around with someone who is not yours…”

Tumblr media
Sun Wukong
About (Name); showing off
"You've met (Name) already? I mean, that's great and all but I was the first one to meet them so hah! What do you mean that it doesn't matter? Uh, duh? It's (Name)?? The best person you will ever meet in your entire life until you die???? Keep up bud"
About (Name); hidden secret
"Wh...what are you doing touching me like that? Huh? (Name) told you I liked scratches on my fur? Wha— ughhh, I told them to keep it a secrettt...whatever, you're not allowed to touch me, only (Name) is allowed in that, hmph"
About (Name); Adoring
"If there's one thing I absolute adore about (Name) that isn't them existing, it's them in general. No really, I mean it. I love how they make me feel better by just talking to me about the weather, I love how easy it is to be myself with them. I just love them so much you know? It's hard to explain but basically, if they were to disappear in this world, then I would flatten mountains, empty oceans, and flip the world upside down until I get them back into my arms."
About (Name); Facts
"Did you know (Name) liked that color in their shirts? I always see them wear those kind of clothes with that style. Oh! Those birds over there yeah? They think they're cute and often stare at them when they're zoning out. And that one over there? That's their favorite place to eat. Also— MPHH?! Ack- why did you cover my mouth all of the sudden?! Yeesh, have some respect, anyways, did you know that (Name) really liked those kind of shoes—"
Six eared Macaque
About (Name); first impressions
"To be completely honest, I didn't think I'd like them as much as I do now. I thought that they were just some ordinary being not worth my time, yet when they talked to me over and over again, suddenly, I felt rather...lonely whenever they're gone. Heh, how annoying of them♡"
About (Name); soft spots
"...You won't leave me alone until I tell you more about (Name) huh? You're lucky I like talking about them so much. However, if I did try talking about them more we'd be here until I decide to stop holding grudges..Huh? I'm going soft? You seriously just realized?"
About (Name); voice
"(Name) once told me that they found my voice soothing to listen to. I'll admit, it took me by surprise the first time they mentioned it, yet that boldness they showed at that moment was attractive of them. Telling me something I never knew people liked about me? And told by the one person you'd kill a whole nation for? Sends shivers down my spine"
About (Name); Sleep
"Knowing me, I never got a lot of sleep. And even if I did it's probably somewhere about 4 hours and then boom, a nightmare to haunt my life until I die. Twice. As cliche as it sounds, I sleep better when (Name) is with me. Something about their arms sharing their warmth into mine never fails to lull me to sleep. Perhaps it's also the fact that they sometimes hum small melodies or run their hands onto my hair to sooth me from whatever's on my mind. It's now mandatory that they stay with me everytime I'm going to sleep, hopefully they don't mind~"
MK
About (Name); excitement
"Huh?! You know about (Name)?!?! That's so cool! (Name)'s so cool!!!! They're so nice and caring and amazing and caring and nice and caring you know? I want to grow up to be just as nice and caring and amazing and caring and caring and nice as them!"
About (Name); injuries
"Look! I'm a mummy! Hehehe I'm not actually one, it's just that I got into this hugee battle with a demon and the aftermath got me all these scars and bruises. (Name) was not happy, gosh, the look on their face when they wrapped bandages on my body while they gave me a whole hour long lecture was so..*shiver* remind me to take better care of myself please"
About (Name); snacks
"My bag is a little bit heavier than usual, maybe it's because of the multiple snacks (Name) keeps inside it. I mean, I'm not complaining, I like the snacks they give me. But a hero's gotta have agility too you know! How am I gonna heroically jump on buildings and beat demons with a heavy bag of super delicious extremely amazing and over the top golden snacks that (Name) gives me?"
About (Name); Lessons
"I think (Name) saw how stressed I am with this whole hero thing, first it was DBK, then spider queen, LDB and now this Asare Leon guy or whatever his name was. It's like I can't keep anything from them. Yet, they still treated me gently and talked to me about how everything happens for a reason, I'm living this life because I'm strong enough to live it. Honestly, I'm glad they told me this, if it weren't for them, I would have been eaten alive by some stinky demon, ewww"

Macaque x GN!Reader: Studies Over Me
Of course, I’d do a studying/overworked reader with Macaque after doing one with Wukong. It seemed only fair since I have been gone for so long. Hope you guys enjoy~~~
Warnings: Angst with fluffy ending!!! Also literally one line referencing potential Shadowpeach, but it could be read as platonic or romantic, if you so choose. Just generally Macaque being a petty bish because he’s a sad monkey baby.
Tumblr media
College was a handful, no matter how many classes you take. It’s everything hard about regular school, but now you’re paying money to go, and professors sneer at you if you have even one C level grade on your transcript. The pressure was hard for Y/n. This was the semester they took English Composition, which basically was code for: Essay Class.
Macaque knew that Y/n was stressed with school, as he had known them since they took their first semester before this one. But even if he knew the that they were struggling, he didn’t really understand how the struggles felt. What made it tricker for him was the fact that this was the first semester Y/n had started since they and Macaque had begun dating. As much as he didn’t want to admit it, Macaque felt sad bitter that he wasn’t getting as much attention from Y/n because they were so focused on their class.
When they weren’t in class, Y/n seemed to only be able to talk about school. Did they hear about that new movie coming out? They won’t be able to go see it since they have class and homework. Read any new books? Only their textbooks. Write anything fun? Only essays. Talk to anyone interesting? Their group dropped the ball on a project together. Seriously, Macaque loved cared about Y/n so much. But jeez, he wished he could get them to maybe talk about his shadow plays. Or maybe the crazy shenanigans MK’s crew had going on with their last adventure. Perhaps talk about having another date night movie night and cuddle.
One thing that anyone could guess is that Macaque is new to dating, let alone dating someone as amazing as Y/n. How had he gotten lucky enough to be with them when he had all these issues? How had he been so lucky to be with someone so smart, kind, and affirming of him and his traumas. Even though Macaque would always worry deep down that he would scare them them away, Y/n stuck around and reassured him that they always would stay. They promised that they would always stand by him. That they would never leave him.
But why did it feel like that was exactly what they were doing now that they were back in school again? Macaque got so used to having Y/n with him almost always when they were off for a semester. Now though, he would be lucky to get to hang out with them for a few hours once a week!! Macaque tried desperately to keep the tightness in his heart at bay when he thought of these facts. He missed Y/n. He missed them so much. He really did. He didn’t want to admit it, and would probably deny it to his next death, but it just made him think of…him…But as he stared at his phone, laying on his couch, looking at the message he typed out a minute or two before, he felt conflicted.
‘Hey, u wanna come over? Wanna talk.’
As much as he wanted to send the message, Macaque was nervous about doing so. But he felt the tightness in his chest turn almost into a festering ball of emotion in his stomach, so he was between a rock and crazy place. He sighed and pressed send, missing the button once or thrice from his thumb shaking. He held his phone close as he waited for his loving partner read the message and hopefully respond quickly. After about ten seconds, he saw that Y/n read the message. But what rose a tiny bit annoyance in Macaque’s stomach, further growing the ball of emotion settling there, was that Y/n just sent a thumbs up emoji. Nothing else. He sighed and sat up on his couch, slamming his phone face down onto the table harder than he meant to, which made him flinch slightly at the loud noise made. Macaque decided to just get a glass of mango juice and try to wait for Y/n as patiently as he could.
When Y/n made it to Macaque’s tiny hut, they immediately noticed his salty expression on his face. To be fair, he had that expression often, but not around them. “Hey, Macaque.” They said, closing the door behind them and looking around. Something was different. “Did you clean the hut before I came here?”
Macaque huffed, a smirk on his face, but it was clear he was annoyed by something. “Yeah, maybe I did. I can be busy, sometimes!”
The way he said that rubbed Y/n the wrong way, but they tried to not pry. Not right away, at least. “Have you been busy with your shadow plays or something?” Y/n asked as they kicked their shoes off and put them to the side.
Macaque’s eyebrow twitched. “Oh, you wanna know?” His tone was unconvinced.
“Okay, what’s wrong, Macaque?” Y/n was getting fed up with this fast and this was barely five minutes into the conversation.
“Nothing!”
“Don’t lie to me. You look like you’re trying to be passive aggressive and I want to know why.”
“Do you care?”
Y/n scoffed. “What do you mean ‘do I care’? Of course I care. You’re my partner and something I did is clearly making you upset but you’re not telling me what.”
“Well, I don’t know. You seem very interested in talking about school stuff lately and not much else! I’d hate to have ya talk about something else.” Macaque gave a fake smile, his body language and voice pulling out all of the fake innocence and theatrics.
“I-what? Is that what this is about?” Y/n was flabbergasted at this point, but Macaque clearly was just getting the argument started.
“Come on, Y/n. You may not have all my ears, but I know you heard me!”
“No, I heard you. But…you didn’t think to just say that this was bothering you?” Y/n asked, incredulously.
That made Macaque pause. He didn’t have a good rebuttal to that, given the shocked look on his face.
“Macaque, you could’ve just said that you wanted to talk about something else besides me in school, or you could’ve said that you wanted to spend more time with me, and I would’ve—”
Macaque covered Y/n’s mouth, effectively making them stop talking, his face beet red enough to blend in with the red markings on his face. He kept his hand there for a second, before he pulled Y/n into his chest with his tail, summoning a shadow portal underneath the pair to end up on the couch. Macaque pulled Y/n in close to him, laying the both of them back on the couch.
“You’re right…I’m sorry…” He said softly, his eyes downcast to the floor. “I-I’m not used to…this…” Macaque gestured between the two of them. “Not like I really ever had the chance to try this kind of thing much before.” He sighed. “I-I…I’m sorry.” He finally said, an embarrassed look on Macaque’s face.
Y/n smiled lovingly. “Macaque, I know you’ve been through a lot. I know you haven’t dated much.” Macaque blushed at that word, making Y/n laugh a bit. “And I know that you needed to spend time with me, too. Just next time, you can ask me. I promise you, I will never leave you just because you ask me to spend some more time with you.” Y/n sealed the promise with a kiss on his cheek.
Macaque flushed a bit more, a small smile on his face. Carefully, almost as if he was nervous, Macaque placed a hand on the side of Y/n’s face. He was a little surprised when Y/n snuggled into his hand, but his growing smile showed that he wasn’t one to complain. “What did I do to deserve someone as amazing as you?” He asked more to himself, then to Y/n. They laughed, kissing his nose, before whispering very softly in three of his ears.
“You were yourself.”

So, this parallel, right.
That parallel and the 4x11 shadowpeach fight as a whole:
Tumblr media
Macaque: "No that's YOU! You're the one always running off! Looking for more power, more sources of immortality—you're the one who wouldn't quit while were were ahead! Not the great sage, he's got to drag EVERYONE else into his mess!" Sun Wukong: "You're not in this mess, you're still free! Everything I did was for us!" Macaque: "You did it for yourself! You've become like this, obsessive demon! I told you going against the Jade Emperor was a bad idea, but no, Wukong doesn't listen to anyone! He just does whatever he wants! You put yourself here, not me."
(4x11 A Lifetime of Mistakes)
-
A large part of Wukong's motivation to keep getting more power was the freedom of it—the more power you have the easier it is to do whatever you want. It's easier to ignore everyone else and focus solely on yourself. It's also easier to ensure yourself and your loved one's are protected and have the ability to do what they want.
So, a punishment where the great Monkey King is imprisoned and trapped for hundreds of years? It's effective and tragic and fitting. Wukong wanted to have the freedom to protect the people he cared about, and in trying to reach for the power to do that, he completely had his freedom removed. He went from the mountain, to then the circlet, and then all of a sudden he had morals and was bound to those.
And then I think about his end of s3 choice to go face the Lady Bone Demon alone. Once again Wukong was trying to protect his loved ones (not to mention the whole reason he went after the Samadhi fire to begin with was to have the power, the freedom to stop LBD (which in itself is another case of SWK believing he needed to be stronger for such freedom)), but he also wanted to make sure MK and himself both had agency. He didn't want MK to have to fight LBD, and he didn't want LBD to end the world.
This is exactly the sentiment he tells Macaque in the 4x11 flashback:
Sun Wukong: "It's so we don't have to worry about anything or anyone ever again! Just living a lazy life, sitting in the sun, eatin' fruit, and doing whatever we want!"
But where does it all lead him?
Tumblr media
To possession, imprisonment. Once again Wukong no longer had the freedom to do what he wanted (which is to protect the people he cares about). Once again in his attempts to help his loved one's, he only hurt them.
This can be applied to his relationship with Macaque, to MK in s2, hell, even Wukong trying to get the map in the first place left him powerless, which then led to him and the gang being imprisoned in 3x02. It's a familiar pattern, one we see with antagonist and protagonist alike.
MK in s2 trained to become more powerful, which in the end only strengthened LBD and forced him and his friends on the run. Mei in 3x12 protects MK by letting herself get captured and placed into LBD's crystal. Mei in 4x05 goes to protect MK, breaking her sword and leaving her vulnerable to being captured by Kui Mulang ("How am I supposed to protect everyone without my sword?"). DBK reached for more power and then became possessed by LBD, hurting his wife and son. Azure reached for the Jade Emperor's power and bound himself to that role, jeopardizing Peng and Yellowtusk in the process.
It's a cycle of reaching for power, endangering others, and then being imprisoned.
So anyways, here's why MK is going to lose control (his agency) next season and hurt his friends with his own- *get's shot*

Shopping Trip (Lego Monkie Kid fanfic)
Summary: The majority of the gang goes shopping. Then Wukong and Macaque play video games.
Warnings: Brief threats, Wukong and Macaque have issues to work through (they're also very dumb about the fact they love each other), swearing
Word count: 6,072
Author's notes: This would NOT leave me alone so here fandom, take the gays residing in my brain for the last two days. Sandy isn't here because I had no idea what he'd be doing. This is 90% indulgent Shadowpeach content for myself but hey, that's something. This is set post Emperor's Wrath. Enjoy.
“Hey, Monkey King, why d'you always wear your fancy robes?” MK questioned after the three of them took a break from training.
Macaque stifled a laugh, looking over at Wukong and revelling in the confusion on his face.
“What do you mean?” Wukong asked around a mouthful of peach flavoured crisps, crunching noisily on them.
MK shrugged and gestured. “You and Macaque always wear your fancy clothes whenever you come and just hang out with us, you can't be comfortable in it.”
“Look, kid, I hate to break it to you but we don't actually own any other clothes,” Macaque replied.
“I can make some though!” Wukong exclaimed, one hand already reaching to yank hair out of his head.
MK and Macaque rushed to stop him, the former tackling his hand still holding the bag of crisps, while the latter reached through a shadow portal to grab his wrist.
“Quit it Wukong, you already eat enough of your hair as it is, no point in you wearing it as well,” Macaque said with an eye roll.
MK’s eyes went round as saucers. “Please tell me that those crisps aren't hair.”
Wukong averted his gaze with a nervous laugh. “Whaaaaat? No, pfft, I'm not that- er-”
“Monkey King! You promised to start eating proper food!” MK whined, poking him in the cheek.
Wukong sighed. “Yeah yeah, I am, kid, I promise, now can I have my arms back?”
Macaque glared at him over MK's head, getting a returning glare.
MK gasped and jumped up, waving his arms wildly. “Oh my gosh, I know just what we should do?”
“Yuh-huh and what's that?” Wukong asked.
“Mei keeps telling me about this super cool new shopping centre that opened up the other week!” MK explained. “What if we all had a day out there and you guys can pick out some comfy clothes for hanging out with us?!”
Macaque shook his head. “Look, kid, I appreciate it but-”
He went silent as something yanked his tail, head whipping around to catch another tail quickly retreating to Wukong's side.
Oh that little-
“It's an amazing idea!” Wukong replied with a grin. “Let us know when you want to do it and we'll be there.”
“Funny how you now speak for both of us,” Macaque muttered, opening up a shadow portal beside him and reaching through to yank Wukong's tail.
The king turned to glare at the warrior, Macaque shooting him a shit-eating grin in return.
“Okay! I'm gonna go, I'm working this evening but I'll see you guys for training again tomorrow!” MK said before beginning to run back down the mountain. “Thanks again for the training!”
A beat went by before the two of them turned to each other.
“You know you could be more supportive of the kid,” Wukong snapped.
“Me? Really? Last I checked you were the one who abandoned his training!” Macaque argued, standing up. “Because that's what you always do isn't it? The great Sun-Wukong who always puts himself first.”
Wukong's jaw clenched, tail lashing behind him, and for a moment it seemed like they were going to fight again.
Then the king's shoulders heaved and his posture slouched. “Can we not do this right now?”
Macaque rolled his shoulders, the joints clicking slightly. “Running off again?”
“Can you stop?!” Wukong shouted. “I don't know what you want from me but you're not gonna get a rise. I'm done with this - with you always trying to bait me into another fight. I have people to look out for now.”
Macaque scoffed. “You can't tell me you actually care about the kid.”
“Bold words from someone who also cares about him,” Wukong retorted and Macaque's fur bristled. “Oh yeah, don't think I haven't noticed. While I was off doing very important things, you kept showing back up. Some part of you does actually care about MK, be honest.”
“Nope, doesn't sound like me,” Macaque stated, tail tapping against the ground twice as he opened up a shadow portal. “See you around, Monkey King.”
Wukong dashed forward, one arm outstretched. “No, wait, Macaque-”
The darkness surrounding him.
Silence.
Well, it wasn't quite silent, it sounded like everything was muffled and underwater.
Macaque took a deep breath, artificial air expanding his lungs.
Wukong was still there although it was like seeing him through murky glass, thumping a fist against the shadows on the ground before giving up and walking away.
Macaque floated in the inky expanse, debating on whether or not to return to his dojo before deciding that he would just stay here for now.
It was peaceful.
It was everything that outside wasn't.
~•~
“Hey boi!” Mei cheered, tackling MK into a hug before waving at Wukong. “Heya Monkey King!”
“Hey,” Wukong waved, pulling his loaned hoodie further over his head. “Hey bud, you sure that no one's gonna recognise me in this?”
“I dunno honestly but if not you can transform, right?” MK argued.
“Fair point.”
“I still do not understand why I have to be here,” Red Son complained, foot tapping impatiently. “If we are all here then can we go already?”
“No, sorry, we're still waiting on someone else,” Tang answered.
“Who else are we waiting for?” Wukong questioned. “The pig guy?”
Tang adjusted his scarf. “Oh no, Pigsy is at that food stall over there shouting at the chef because he sold us half baked churros while we were waiting.” He paused. “Speaking of, I'm going to go stop Pigsy before he ends up in too much trouble.”
“Literally who else would MK invite?” Wukong's eyes narrowed in confusion. “I don't even understand why Red Son is here.”
“Hey!”
“I swear if you invited Nezha then this is going to be the most boring shopping trip ever.”
“Ugh, I wish he'd invited Nezha, then I'd have someone else to make fun of you with.”
Wukong spun around with a curse, glaring at their final arrival, who hadn't even bothered with a disguise.
“Great, just great.”
Macaque shrugged. “Hey, I don't want to be here any more than you want me to be here. Only reason I'm tagging along is that I was planning to grab some food anyway.”
“But we're meant to be clothes shopping,” Mei interrupted, eyes watery as she stared up at the warrior.
“Yeah Macaque, you promised,” MK added, also staring up with large eyes.
“Look kid I didn't-” The warrior paused and sighed. “Fine, I'll buy some clothes. But I'm picking what I get, not you guys.”
The two of them let out a cheer and rushed back over to Red Son, beginning to drag him in the direction of a shop.
“I cannot believe that I'm gonna have to put up with you today,” Wukong groaned as the two of them set off after the trio.
“Hey, you're the one who volunteered me for this so if there's anyone to blame it's yourself,” Macaque responded.
Mei and MK had seemed to immediately start piling clothes into their arms, occasionally thrusting some pieces into Red Son's arms.
Wukong stumbled backwards slightly when MK seemed to just appear in front of him, holding up two pairs of pyjamas. “Hey Monkey King! Should we get these matching Monkey King™ pyjamas?”
“Hey kiddo, I'm wearing a disguise for a reason so maybe keep your voice down,” Wukong chuckled. “But yeah, absolutely.”
The king turned to glare at Macaque when the warrior snickered.
“Something funny?”
“No, it's nothing,” Macaque lied, one hand coming up to try and cover the smile on his face.
Wukong let out a loud, over-dramatic gasp. “Are you making fun of my bond with my apprentice? Are you making fun of our super duper cool friendship?”
“No,” Macaque sputtered, trying to get his laughter under control.
Wukong leaned in, poking him in the face. “You are! How could you?”
Macaque stopped trying to contain his laughter at the theatrics, golden eyes screwing up tight as he nearly doubled over.
Wukong's smile wavered as his gaze flitted across the warrior's face.
He knew realistically why Macaque would cover up his eye.
Seeing his unmarred face and having these moments made it almost seem like nothing had ever gone wrong between them.
When Macaque straightened up again he shot Wukong a quick glance, accompanied with a shy smile before returning his attention to the shop in front of them. “C'mon then, no point standing around all day. Gotta find you something to wear other than pyjamas.”
“Yeah and we've gotta find you anything to wear,” Wukong teased. “What do you even wear? Like, leather jacket and grunge aesthetic boots.”
“How the fuck do you know what an aesthetic is?” Macaque swore, turning back to face him.
The king shrugged nonchalantly and grinned. “What can I say, I guess I'm just cool like the kids are.”
The warrior snorted. “Yeah right, the day that you're cool is the day I haven't died before.”
A silence fell between them at that comment and something flickered over Macaque's features.
Wukong reached out to him before the shadow slipped away from him, walking over to a rack of darkly coloured clothes.
There was so much they still needed to talk about.
Macaque flicked through the different hanging articles before smirking. “So, what about the fact that Red Son has a crush on either MK or Mei?”
“Wait, what?” Wukong spluttered.
“When the three of them were together back there, Red Son was blushing and stuff. Can't tell which of them is making him fall for them but I'm not actually that surprised.”
Wukong stood stock still for a moment, doing a mental reboot while Macaque moved on.
“Wait, no, hold on you little shit, are you for real?” Wukong questioned.
Macaque nodded. “When we catch up to them, just watch. I wouldn't lie, would I?”
“I dunno, seems like you lie a lot.” Wukong narrowed his eyes dubiously.
“Well, I'm not lying about that.”
They wandered for a little longer before managing to catch up with the trio.
Okay, Wukong had to hand it to Macaque, Red Son did seem to be blushing.
“Hey, Monkey King, you made it! We lost you back there!” MK cheered before turning back to Mei. “Ooh, Mei, do you still have the thing we picked out for Macaque?”
“Kid I don't-”
“Found it!” Mei announced, holding up the black mesh shirt.
Macaque's gaze dragged over it before extending a hand. “Okay, I'll try it on.”
Wukong did a double take. “You like mesh?”
“Haven't tried it before but it looks cool enough. If I can get something to go over it then I'd probably like it.”
Red Son held up a black sleeveless turtleneck shirt from the pile in his arms. “Something like this?”
Macaque shifted the first shirt in his grip before reaching out for the other. “Sounds good.”
“Oh and there are some dark coloured jeans by the changing rooms, wanna grab a pair of those?” MK offered.
“Mhm.”
Wukong trailed behind the bunch of them, briefly wondering where Tang and Pigsy had gotten to.
Him and MK plopped down onto a bench just outside the changing rooms, MK's stack of clothes beside him.
“I'm gonna try them on after the others have tried theirs,” MK explained. “Wait a minute, why don't you have anything Monkey King?”
“Um, well, I just didn't see anything I liked all that much, bud,” Wukong lied.
“Oh okay.”
The boy got out his phone, playing some obnoxiously loud game while they waited for the others to get changed.
“Okay, we're done!” Mei called after a while.
“Come out then!” MK shouted back, shutting his phone off and putting it back in his pocket.
“Macaque, you coming?”
“Nope.”
“Aw, come on, pretty please? You look great!”
“...Fine.”
Mei stepped out, practically dragging Red Son and Macaque with her.
And wow, Macaque actually looked kind of good.
The clothes actually suited him.
The warrior wrenched Mei's iron grip off his arm before grumpily crossing his arms over his chest.
“Woah, you guys look awesome!” MK gasped, clapping his hands together.
Macaque rolled his eyes and frowned when he looked over at Wukong. “Quit staring, Wukong, don't you know it's impolite?”
Wukong smirked. “Thought you said I was impolite.”
“Yeah, I know that you are. Doesn't mean you have to give me more reasons for it,” the warrior complained before looking over at Mei. “Hey, can we wrap this up and buy this stuff already?”
“Nu-uh, we've still got loads of outfits to try on! You and Monkey King can wait here while we finish checking all these sick clothes out,” Mei replied.
Macaque grumbled something under his breath before going back to the changing room.
Three pairs of eyes turned to Wukong. “He's just always kinda cranky, trust me.”
“I heard that!”
~•~
“Ugh, how much sugar did you even put in that thing?” Macaque asked, nose wrinkling with disgust at the sweet scent coming off of Wukong's drink.
Wukong moved the glass away from his face, a bit of cream smeared on his nose. “Um, I dunno. It has chocolate, ice cream, sprinkles, some more chocolate, some normal cream, some kinda sweet milk, caramel-”
Macaque reached out and grabbed the drink out of his hand while he was distracted listing ingredients, holding it out of his reach. “You are going to clog an artery if you have that much sugar.”
Wukong pouted. “Macaque! Gimme back my drink!”
Macaque opened up a shadow portal under his hand, hovering the drink just above it. “You aren't going to have all of it to yourself or you will die.”
“I'm immortal, I can't die,” Wukong retorted.
Oh yeah.
“You aren't going to have it all to yourself or I'll steal all the wine you're hiding at your place.”
Wukong's eyes went wide and he leaned across Macaque, desperately attempting to grab it. “No! No! Fine, I'll share! Just gimme the drink!”
Macaque dropped the drink through the shadow portal, watching as Wukong's face fell.
As the king turned back to the table the warrior opened a portal again, depositing the drink - now with two straws - back in front of him.
“Come on, if you're going to clog an artery then I might as well do it with you.”
Wukong shot him a quick glare but moved the glass so it was between them.
Red Son slid back into their booth. “They're still ordering but wanted me to say they'll be back soon.”
Macaque glanced over to the counter where Mei and MK seemed to be arguing over the menu of sweet treats.
“May I ask a question?” Red Son asked.
“You just did,” Wukong teased.
The boy rolled his eyes. “May I ask another question after the one I am asking at this moment?”
“Mmmmkay.”
Macaque lowered his head to take a sip of the drink, throat burning at how sickly sweet it was.
He'd never understand how Wukong could stomach these things.
“Are you two in a relationship?”
Macaque choked on his drink and Wukong hit him on the back a few times while replying.
“No, never! Me? With him? Tch, as if! He's so- him! And I'm so me!” The king answered.
Macaque gulped in a lungful of air after recovering. “This is the one time we agree on something and it's that we are not a thing. I hate him, he makes me feel like my skin is on the outside and my fur is on the inside. I'd rather have my heart served up on a platter to the Lady Bone Demon than go out with him.”
“Ew, did you have to be so graphic?” Wukong complained. “You're gonna put me off my drink.”
“Good. It tastes like shit.”
“Because you have no tastes.”
“I do have tastes. Anyway, you seemed to conveniently leave out the fact that this drink is peach flavoured.”
Wukong shrugged and smiled. “It's my favourite.”
“You sure you didn't make this out of your hair?” Macaque questioned, lip curling in disgust.
Red Son huffed. “No, I paid for his drink. And there's no need for you two to be so defensive.”
“We're back!” MK announced, flopping down against Red Son's side. “What did we miss?”
“Ah, yes, you are back,” Red Son flustered.
Macaque and Wukong shared a look.
So that's who Red Son liked then.
“Duh, that's what I just said,” MK laughed.
“We ordered every dessert they had!” Mei announced.
“Oh no,” Macaque whispered.
“Oh yes,” Wukong purred, eyes lighting up. “Desserts for everyone!”
The warrior dropped his head to rest against the table, grimacing at how sticky it seemed to be. “Why did I ever let myself be dragged along here?”
“Because you're our friend!” MK said.
“Greeaaaat.”
~•~
“Omg, these stationary sets are so naturecore, I have to have them for my aesthetics blog,” Mei gasped.
Wukong nudged Macaque to grab his attention before whispering. “Hey, d'you have any idea what that means?”
“No idea,” Macaque admitted. “As established earlier, I know aesthetic but that's about it.” The warrior smirked. “Aren't you the one who's ‘cool like the kids are’?”
“Shuddup,” Wukong laughed.
Macaque's tail flicked up to hit him in the back of the head before looking around. “So, we kinda lost Pigsy and Tang at the start.”
“Yeah, it'll be fine,” the king replied calmly, waving it off.
“Maybe for you. I for one would like to not be on kid sitting duty for the next decade.”
“It's only been two hours,” Wukong stated, snickering at the defeated groan Macaque let out. “What's wrong? Too old to keep up?”
“Wha- no,” Macaque denied sourly before continuing. “My feet hurt though. I'm not used to walking around this much. Usually I just use my shadows to get places.”
Wukong sighed before holding out his arms.
The warrior stared blankly at him.
“Climb on, I'll carry you,” the king offered.
Macaque immediately began to walk away from him. “Nope, nu-uh, never happening, find someone else prince fucking charming.”
“Come on Macaque, your pride won't be that wounded if you let yourself take a break,” Wukong whined, following him.
The shadow’s tail lashed behind him as he walked through the aisles of the shop, trying to catch up to wherever the other three had run off to. “I'll take a break when I get home later. Feet being sore isn't the worst thing I've had to deal with.”
Unspoken words hung between them and Wukong followed Macaque silently until they reached the trio, staring at row upon row of cards.
“Hey guys, whatcha looking at?” Wukong inquired, propping his head on MK's shoulder.
“We're helping Mei pick out a card for her dad's birthday,” MK explained.
“You could make one,” Red Son added. “Although didn't you say it's tomorrow?”
“Yeah,” Mei groaned. “I was so busy helping MK train that I forgot.”
“You forgor,” MK said.
“I forgor,” Mei affirmed.
Wukong straightened back up, whispering. “What language is this?”
“No idea,” Macaque said.
“No idea what?” Mei asked.
“Nothing.”
“‘kay.”
Wukong smiled at Macaque.
The shadow returned it with a small quirk of his mouth.
It wasn't much but it was better than it had been.
~•~
“That's it, I am not being dragged into a spa, I'm calling Pigsy,” Macaque said, digging his phone out his pocket.
“You have Pigsy's number?” Wukong asked beside him before continuing. “You have a phone?”
“Yeah, and?” Macaque tapped onto his contacts. “Got Pigsy's number after the kid crashed out at my place one time. Also he makes good noodles.”
“I know right?” Wukong agreed, mouth practically watering.
“Hello! Pigsy's Noodles, how can I-”
“Cut the crap Pigsy, your kids are trying to drag me into a spa and I know that you and Tang are still somewhere in this shopping centre.”
“Oh fuc- okay, where are you guys, I'll come and get ‘em,” Pigsy sighed.
“Seventh floor, top right corner, next to the arcade place.”
“Wait, there's an arcade place next door and they chose to go to the spa instead?” Tang questioned.
“Red Son is trying to convince us all to get princess pamper sessions before we get wrecked and lose all our money to useless games,” Macaque explained.
“That'd do it. We'll be there in a few.”
Macaque hung up, quirking an eyebrow at Wukong's sad expression. “What do you want now?”
“You're gonna ruin their fun,” Wukong complained, gesturing at where the three others were currently crashed out on a bench.
“No, I'm just getting us the rest of the evening off,” Macaque argued.
When Wukong still looked upset he sighed.
“If I play your shitty game this evening will that make it up to you?”
Wukong brightened up. “Yes! Although it isn't shitty, take that back.”
“Maybe. Depends on how good your game is.”
Macaque looked over at the trio. “Hey, Red Son, a word.”
The boy seemed sheepish as he walked over, a sharp contrast to his usual confident demeanour. “Yes?”
“You break MK’s heart and I'll break all your bones,” Macaque snarled quietly.
“Okay so you're just coming out with it,” Wukong muttered.
“P-pardon?” Red Son stuttered, hair letting off embers.
“You aren't subtle. So you heard me. If you break his heart, I will break all your bones.”
Red Son swallowed thickly. “Y-yes sir.”
“Good.”
MK walked up beside them. “What're you guys talking about?”
“We were just saying goodbye,” Wukong supplied, somehow having come up with a good excuse for once in his long life.
“Oh cool. I'm sleeping around Red Son's tonight so won't be able to make it to training tomorrow, is that okay?” MK said.
Macaque subtly shot Red Son a glare while he replied to MK. “That's fine, see you in a few days kid.”
The warrior opened up a shadow underneath himself and the king.
“No, no, no, no, no, not the shadow portal!”
~•~
“Ugh, I think I'm gonna throw up,” Wukong complained as he dropped out of the shadow portal.
“Too bad, you fly your cloud recklessly and the shadows are quicker,” Macaque replied, dropping down beside him before opening up their shared bag of shopping purchases and grabbing out a handful of clothes. “I'm gonna get changed then I'm ordering actual food for dinner.”
“But my way is cheaper!”
“Yeah, and it'll have you hacking up furballs until your eventual death, Wukong,” Macaque snorted, shutting himself into the bathroom.
Wukong rooted around in the bag and grabbed out one of the plain shirts he'd picked out, slipping off his robes and putting on the black t-shirt before grabbing a pair of loose blue jeans out of the bag.
The king settled down on the sofa, aimlessly flicking through channels on his TV until his tail brushed against someone else.
Wukong lifted his head up, staring at Macaque.
The warrior practically had a halo of light around his head from the setting sun behind him, a sliver of yellow fabric visible under his dark hoodie.
“Hey. You up for burning off some energy?” Macaque proposed and Wukong was in his feet within seconds.
“We haven't fought in ages,” Wukong sceptically tested.
Macaque shrugged. “Nothing serious. But I need to stretch out my limbs and test how flexible I am in these clothes.”
Wukong dragged his eyes up and down Macaque. “Mhm, because ripped jeans are gonna be sooo easy to move around in. Prepare to be beat.”
Macaque smirked, sweeping out one leg and knocking Wukong off balance.
“H-hey! No fair!” Wukong growled, reaching up and tugging Macaque down with the edge of his hoodie.
The warrior let out a squeak, collapsing down beside the king before going still.
“Oh shit. Macaque? You good, bud?” Wukong questioned, moving closer.
Macaque spun around, hands catching Wukong's and pinning them against the floor. “I cannot believe you just fell for that.”
“Yeah, well, it's been years since you played that card while we've fought,” Wukong argued, one leg kicking out and into Macaque's stomach.
The warrior's grip on his hands loosened, allowing the king to flip the two of them over as he hovered over him.
His hands closed around Macaque's, mimicking the move just used on him.
“Not so cocky now, huh?” Wukong challenged.
Macaque just laughed and rolled his eyes, opening up a shadow portal underneath himself.
Wukong pulled back, watching as the other sank into the floor and disappeared before a weight crashed down on his back.
“Fuck! Macaque!”
“Got you now,” Macaque taunted, the two of them rolling back and forth until Macaque pinned Wukong down.
The warrior was just shy of sitting on him, chest heaving as he breathed.
Wukong sighed. “Yeah, alright Mac, you win, now get off of me.”
The shadow paused, golden eyes staring at him.
“What?” Wukong inquired.
“You haven't called me Mac since- since before,” Macaque stated, his grip on Wukong's hands loosening.
Orange and pink hues of light shone off of his dark fur.
It was beautiful.
He was beautiful.
“No, no I guess not,” Wukong murmured.
Macaque rolled onto the floor beside him, both of them staring up at the ceiling.
“So, if Red Son does break MK's heart we are absolutely going to ruin his life, right?” Macaque questioned.
Wukong rolled onto his side, staring at Macaque.
Tufts of dark hair stuck up in different directions, framing his face.
The king reached out with a hand before hesitating when the warrior flinched, eyes closing.
A long moment passed, before Macaque quickly got up, with a mumbled sentence. “I'm going to order dinner.”
“Yeah, okay,” Wukong responded, mentally kicking himself.
Of course Macaque still didn't trust him, why should he?
After everything Wukong had done, he had no reason to.
“Hey, Wukong, how many portions should I order you?” Macaque asked, one hand muffling the bottom of his phone.
“Three, if that's okay,” Wukong answered.
Macaque nodded before continuing to quietly speak to whoever was on the other end of the line.
Wukong walked back over to the sofa, sitting down and trying to avoid looking at his friend.
Huh.
When had he started thinking of Macaque as a friend again?
The other side of the sofa dipped as weight settled down on it.
“I'm sorry for flinching,” Macaque whispered. “Really going against my therapy goals.”
Wukong blinked before looking over at him. “You go to therapy?”
Macaque's tail wrapped across his chest, curling over his opposite shoulder. “Well, I'm trying. Kind of hard though when most therapists are mortal and I have issues with opening up about things from my past.”
The shadow let out a deep breath before slowly relaxing against the king's side. “Is… is this okay?”
“Yeah, no, of course,” Wukong flustered a bit, shifting so that Macaque would be more comfortable.
Wukong turned so his back was resting against the arm of the sofa, one arm circling around Macaque's waist.
The warrior tensed under his touch slightly before relaxing back against him, pillowing his head on the king's chest. “You sure you're okay with this?”
“Geez Mac, I'm fine,” Wukong responded. “Are we gonna start playing my game now or d'you want to wait until after dinner?”
“After dinner. I want to get some rest in,” Macaque sighed, opening up a shadow portal over the top half of his head. “I'll wake up when the food gets delivered, I'll hear it. You should get some rest too.”
“Yeah alright. You get some rest.”
“Thanks Wukong.”
“No problem bud.”
~•~
Macaque's ear flicked inside the portal as footsteps ran up to the door of his dojo.
“Hold on,” he murmured to Wukong, unsure whether his friend was even awake before sitting up and slipping his upper body through the shadow portal.
“Knock knock!” The delivery boy shouted as Macaque reached over to open the door.
MK grinned and held up the couple of bags in his arms. “Hey Macaque! This is more than you usually order.”
“Yeah, well, I've got company,” Macaque said evasively.
“Is it Monkey King?”
“Nah, I have other friends,” Macaque lied, reaching out with one hand for the bags. “Aren’t you meant to be staying around Red Son's?”
“Yeah, I'm headed there after this,” MK explained.
“Have a good sleepover, kid.”
“You too Macaque!”
“No, kid, I'm not having a-”
“Bye Macaque!”
The shadow sighed, shutting and locking his door before slipping back through the portal to Wukong's house.
The king was still passed out on the sofa, snoring at an obnoxious volume.
Or perhaps it was actually quiet, and Macaque's sensitive hearing was getting to him more than usual.
“Hey, wake up.”
Wukong blinked awake, sitting up before his mouth watered at the sight of the takeaway bags. “Oh yes.”
Macaque rolled his eyes but passed over the three portions Wukong had asked for. “You know, if you keep eating that many portions then you're going to get fat.”
Wukong let out an offended gasp before shovelling some of the noodles into his open mouth. “No I'm not.”
“You are,” Macaque replied, teasingly poking him on the stomach. “See? Round.”
“It's cushioning. For when I may somehow end up on the floor,” Wukong explained.
“Because I beat you up,” Macaque snickered, opening up his own meal while Wukong began to dig into his second.
“Shuddup.”
“Make me,” Macaque challenged, tail lashing behind him.
Wukong's golden gaze flitted across him before he went back to his meal.
“That's what I thought.”
After they'd finished their meal, Macaque let out a sigh. “Alright then, put on your crappy game.”
“It's not crappy!” Wukong protested, already digging through the piles of DVDs in front of his TV. “Alright, found it. Get ready for the best game you'll ever play.”
“I highly doubt it,” Macaque mumbled, nearly dropping the headset and controller thrown haphazardly in his general direction.
“What was that?”
“I said ‘I highly doubt it’,” Macaque deadpanned. “This won't be anywhere near as good as my game.”
“You have a game?” Wukong laughed, plopping back down on the sofa beside him. “Okay, that I have to play after you're done with this.”
Macaque let out a grumble but adjusted the headset before putting it on, slouching against Wukong's side as the game registered him in.
An avatar looking surprisingly like him loaded in on a dirt path, a chicken running out of a bush in front of him before glitching and dying.
“Wow. What a surprise, I was right, this game sucks,” Macaque huffed.
The king's tail flicked up to curl around the warrior's arm. “Aww, c'mon Mac, give it a chance at least.”
Macaque sighed but began to walk his character along the path, stopped only a second later as another character spawned in front of him.
“Welcome traveller, on your journey to the west!” The Monkey King greeted.
The background image switched so the character was pointing at himself. “As the Great Sage equal to Heaven, you couldn't ask for a better tutor.” The screen switched back to the first picture of him. “On your journey, you will learn to smite powerful enemies.”
God this was boring.
“After you complete the tutorials, you will learn how to access your hidden potential.”
Ugh, good, back to the overworld.
Now if he could just-
“Defeat each opponent to work your way up to the final boss, the Rhino King,” Monkey King said.
“Couldn't afford the rights for Demon Bull King?” Macaque joked, elbowing Wukong in the side.
“Nah, just seemed boring seeing as I already beat him.”
“Here are seventy two combos-”
Skip.
“Pay attention-”
Skip.
“Make many friends along the way,” Monkey King advised and Macaque tore off his headset.
“What the fuck is that background art?!” The shadow screamed.
The king grinned. “Flattering, right? You would not believe how quickly the game sold out.”
“That's atrocious!” Macaque shouted, hitting him on the head before putting the headset back on.
Yeah, no, he was skipping through all of this.
Eventually it let him go and unlock abilities.
“Hey, these are all passive,” Macaque pointed out.
“Just give it a moment,” Wukong instructed.
The monk on the screen sighed before it flicked to a different ability menu.
Macaque's eyes roved over the screen before he took off the headset.
“Really?”
“What?”
“A fucking muscle bro version of yourself in just pants taking up half the screen?” Macaque growled because it was very obvious why he was pissed.
Wukong smirked. “What? I think it's a good view.”
“Self obsessed asshole,” Macaque grumbled, trying to just focus on buying a couple of different attacks before giving up and handing the game controller and headset over to Wukong. “No, I can't do this, this is just something for you to admire yourself.”
“Fiiiiine,” Wukong groaned. “But I want to play your game now.”
Macaque opened up a shadow portal, sticking his arm in and rooting around. “Seriously though Wukong, are you trying to seduce the player or something?”
Wukong grinned slyly at him. “Are you saying I'm hot?”
Macaque's face screwed up. “...No.”
“That's it, the Six-eared Macaque thinks I'm hot!” Wukong shouted before getting up and racing to the entrance of his house and cupping his hands around his mouth. “The Six-eared Macaque thinks that Sun-Wukong, Great Sage equal to Heaven, is hot!”
“Shut up,” Macaque said, withdrawing his hand and tossing the game case to Wukong as he walked back over.
“It looks like it was made by a five year old mortal,” Wukong giggled but put the disc in anyway.
When the king settled back down on the sofa, the warrior stretched out, laying his upper body across his friend's lap.
“And what do you think you're doing?” Wukong questioned before slipping the headset on.
“Making myself comfy.”
“Yeah yeah, I'm gonna beat this game in minutes.”
A moment passed as the game loaded.
“Why does everything look like a crappy anime?” Wukong inquired.
“Fuck you.”
~•~
“This is the fourth time I've done this encounter and I still haven't beaten it!” Wukong whined, throwing the controller across the room.
“Aww, too hard for you?” Macaque teased, not even cracking open an eye.
“Pfft, n-no!” Wukong floundered, taking off the headset and putting it on the floor. “I'm just going to take a break.”
“Sure you are,” Macaque snorted, opening his eyes a sliver.
Wukong stared, stock still, not sure if Macaque had realised that the glamour over his eye was down.
The scar over that side of his face was still hidden, but mismatching gold and milk coloured eyes fixed a tired gaze on him.
“Staring is rude,” Macaque murmured.
Wukong blinked, looking away. “Yeah, sorry.”
Macaque sat up, stretching with a yawn, hoodie riding up his sides slightly and exposing the yellow shirt he had on underneath.
It was surprisingly nice to see Macaque in bright colours.
Wukong reached out a hand to skim over the dark fur that stuck up on one side of his head, smiling softly when Macaque didn't flinch away.
“Hey, are your ears okay?” Wukong suddenly asked.
Macaque turned to face him, eyes back to their glamoured gold again. “Huh?”
“Well we were at a pretty busy place for most of today so I was wondering whether it was hard on your ears.”
Macaque seemed to blush. “Oh, no, they're all okay.”
The king's hand dropped to skim closer to where another two pairs of ears had to be hidden on the warrior. “Can I see them again?”
Macaque's eyes went wide and Wukong quickly withdrew his hand. “I'm sorry, you don't have to-”
The glamours dropped.
Wukong couldn't help but stare at the hues of colour on Macaque's ears, having nearly forgotten them over the centuries.
But there they were again, still with such resplendent glory.
Moonlight shone through the window, catching the back of Macaque's face with rays of light that made him shine.
“Rude to stare,” Macaque repeated, seeming to curl in on himself slightly.
“You're beautiful,” Wukong murmured, trying to ingrain this in his memory.
Maybe then he would have something to keep when they eventually fought again.
And just like that the glamours were back up, hiding Macaque's appearance behind a facade.
“I- I should go,” Macaque stammered, standing up and conjuring a portal in the floor.
“No, Mac, wait, I'm sorry-”
Too late.
His warrior was gone again, leaving him alone again.
Wukong sighed and dropped his head against the back of the sofa. “Idiot.”

Okay but like; consider this: Azure Lion (reformed? never a bad guy? still a bad guy?) trying so, SO hard to get MK to like him. He really wants to woo the Monkey King but doesn't think he can move forward without his "son's" acceptance (after all, if (when) Azure Lion marries the Monkey King that will make MK his son too).
"You gotta tell Azure to leave Xiaotian alone."
Yellowtusk blinked at the direct words of his former sworn brother. "Hello...to you too, Wukong?" he said. "Can you hear me?" These phone things were so finicky sometimes.
"Yes, I can hear you, Yellowtusk. And I'm serious, tell Azure to leave Xiaotian alone. The kid made it pretty clear he wanted things to happen on his timeline."
As far as Yellowtusk knew, Azure had been leaving Sun Wukong's successor alone since he saved his life. Wukong came by sometimes, to make sure everything was going alright and Azure was following the terms. "What has he been doing? As far as I know, he's been leaving the boy alone-"
"He's been leaving dead animals on the kid's fire escape, too big to be from a normal cat. Apparently the kid just thought it was some kind of courting gift to him, and then Yin and Jin ended up on his fire escape half dead."
Oh. Well, okay then.
He couldn't even really deny that. Azure, as far as he knew, was the only one that had the cat instincts to hunt. The others did hunt, but it was more of a bonding experience, and with weapons. "Has he explained why?"
"Actually, yes, he left a letter with the bozos." There was the shuffle of paper on the other end. "Something about wanting to mend bridges, wanting to fix things...I think he even added a marriage proposal to me somewhere in there?"
Yellowtusk sighed, reaching up to rub his temples. Of course.
"I'll...talk to him."
Hopefully Azure would calm down once he realized he was scaring Xiaotian.

“MY INSIDES ARE RED AND YOURS ARE TOO” MILEENA X FEM READER FINAL PART
Tumblr media
REQUEST BY : @zhivaxo
May I request an MK1 Mileena x Fem Reader?
The reader is an earthrelmer, and when Mileena meets the reader , she falls in love and through the story. You see them get closer and closer until the reader almost dies and Mileena saves her?
Mileena and Tanya are not together?
I hope this is okay with you if not it's cool :] have a good day
ADDITIONAL : I made the reader Raiden’s twin sister. In the original timeline the reader was a thunder god and in MK 11 Raiden and reader gave Liu Kang all their power to save them so in this timeline she is the new earthrealm’s champion. Also in the original timeline, Mileena had an obsessive crush on you but nothing came of it. This is more so a story because the idea came to me and I couldn’t get it out of my head. Also plot will change from mk 11 becaussse I said so
PART 1
Tumblr media
“Wake up! (Y/N)! (Y/N)! Stay with me.”
You heard a voice say. You blinked your eyes slowly and saw Liu Kang in front of you.
“Lord Liu Kang? What happened?”
“You blacked out. I healed you with my fire. You must take it easy.” Liu Kang offered his hand for you to take.
When you looked around, you realized you were back at the temple in Earthrealm. You were confused. Why were you back in Earthrealm? Where were the others? “What happened?”
Liu Kang’s face was full of sorrow as if he did not want to speak what had happened into existence. “Sindel is dead. The others are in Outworld, preparing.”
”What am I still doing here then? Come on.” You started to walk. When you did, Liu Kang gripped your arm to stop you firmly in place. You gave him a look. “What?”
”I cannot let you leave, (Y/N). Your body needs rest.”
”I don’t care about rest. My brother and friends are out there. I can’t just let them do this alone!” You saw the unsure look on Liu Kang’s face. “Please, Lord Liu Kang. You told me that I am destined to be your chosen one. What kind of chosen one just sits on the sidelines while her friends go off to war?”
Liu Kang really did not want you to leave. Though, you were right and he understood the position you were in. He sighed and then began to conjure up the portal using his fire power.
You were happy that Liu Kang didn’t put a fight and allowed you to leave. “Be careful.” He told you.
”I will.”
Tumblr media
Mileena was worried about you. Not only that but she was completely heartbroken over her mother’s death. All she could think about was you now.
It was obvious of the connection the two of you shared but Mileena now recognized she had feelings for you. She hated it. Not only that but she felt weak to her knees every time you were around.
How was she supposed to go on without you?
“Princess Mileena.” Shang Tsung called her attention.
She gritted her teeth but held back her aggressive nature. “Empress now.”
”Yes…I have a proposition for you.”
Mileena rolled her eyes. She couldn’t believe he would even say that to her. “I am not interested whatever it may be.”
”I think you might. We all know you are fond of that Earthrealmer. However, how would you ever have a real relationship with her considering your condition?”
The mention of you tugged on her heart strings. She just didn’t understand why he was concerned. “Get to your point, sorcerer.”
Shang Tsung had this smug on his face. He knew that whatever he was about to say, she would be interested in. “Unfortunately, I cannot cure Tarkat once it has entered a beings system but I can prevent it. I can make an antidote that will prevent (Y/N) from catching the disease. All she would have to do is drink it.”
Mileena was absolutely interested. She could finally stop being so scared about being around you. About getting you infected. She knew though that this would come with a price. “What do you want?”
”Simple. When all this is over spare me and Quan Chi. You can live your happy ending with the Earthrealmer…we’ll live ours.”
That would mean that after all this, Shang Tsung wouldn’t be arrested for his crimes. Was it worth it? Letting a mad man out on the lose?
You were worth it. You were always worth it. “Fine. But if I find you lying sorcerer, I will have your head.”
”Very well.” He spoke, unbothered.
You went through the portal. You were met by the group. “I will never get over that.” You mumble to yourself.
Raiden had looked at you, completely confused. “What are you doing here? You’re suppose to be resting.”
”I’m done resting.” You told him. “I’m fine. I’m prepared to do whatever it takes.”
Raiden did not seem convinced. Mileena ran to your side and pulled you into a hug. You hugged her back. “I thought you were badly injured.” She told you.
”Nah. Just needed to take a quick cat nap.” You told her. The two of you pull away. You take the amulet out of your waistband and you walked over to Raiden before handing it to him. “Here.”
Raiden looked at you in disbelief. Why were you giving your amulet to him? “No. I’m not taking that from you.”
You rolled your eyes a little. “Just take it string bean.”
”(Y/N), you almost died. I am not taking the one thing that can save you.”
“Well I can’t walk around with it knowing that you also share this power too.” You told him. You raised the amulet to him. “Take it.”
Raiden was still unsure. Mileena admired how protective you were with your brother. It reminded her of the relationship she had with her sister. That’s when Mileena stepped up. “Take it, Raiden.” Mileena then gently grabbed your hand before looking deep in your eyes. “I will protect her.”
Your brother looked between the two of you. Despite him not wanting to, he believed Mileena. He let out a sigh before taking the amulet. “I am not keeping this. As soon as this is over - you will get it back.”
You knew that you couldn’t argue with him there. You let out an exasperated sigh and looked around for answers. “What’s the plan?”
“We must divide our forces.” Scorpion spoke. “Raiden, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi will use their magic to attack the portals. As they do, Kenshi and Jerrod will grind down the Dragon Army. The rest of us will attack our dark doubles. If they’re defeated, it will hopefully throw the dragon warriors in disarray.
”An astute strategy.” Quan Chi complimented.
”Truly. I could not have devised a better one.” Shang Tsung co signed.
You rolled your eyes at the two. “Chill out. You’re still the bad guys remember? We don’t like you.”
Everyone got into their positions. When everyone was ready, you all immediately attacked. Fighting without your lightning powers was slightly weird. Lucky for you, you were strong enough to take everyone that was in your path.
One had caught you by surprise. They pinned you to the ground and started choking you. Mileena went behind their back and put a sai right through their head.
You threw the warrior’s body off of you. “Where would I be without you?”
”Surely, dead.” Mileena teased before helping you up.
The two of you continue to fight. You still fight until you realize that the portal is closed. “They did it.”
Mileena looked at you with loving eyes. She wanted to tell you before everything was too late. “(Y/N), I must speak with you.”
You looked at her curiously. “Alright. What’s up?”
“Shang Tsung is going to make you a potion that you can drink. So, it can be prevented to get the Tarkat disease.”
You scoffed at the idea. Why would she trust Shang Tsung to do that? “And what did he want in return?”
”His freedom.”
”And you believe him?”
”Yes. I do.”
You couldn’t understand why she would do this. Why she would want to do this? To even trust a man like him. “Why? Why do all this?”
Mileena did not stop looking in your eyes. She caressed your face with both her hands. “Dearest (Y/N), have we not already made it so obvious?”
Was this it? Was this Mileena’s confession? If it was…it wasn’t enough. “I want to hear you say it.”
“(Y/N), you have been by my side through it all. Even when I felt betrayed. Even when you learned of my monstrous face. You did not run. You are the most courageous woman I have ever met. Nothing would make me more happy than to finally be yours.” Mileena then took your hands. “We can do it. We can be together. I know we can. Do not run from this.”
All you wanted to do was kiss Mileena. You caressed her face with your right hand and looked into her beautiful eyes. The eyes you couldn’t help but swim in. “I don’t want to run from this feeling.”
When Mileena realized you were leaning in slightly, she carefully stopped you by placing her finger over your lips. “Not yet, darling. A time will come for that.”
You knew you couldn’t kiss Mileena right now but god did you want to. You heard a whistle and when you looked you saw Johnny. “Aww. I knew you two would get together.”
Mileena grabbed one of her sais and threw it at Johnny. It barley missed his head and landed in the rock wall. “Ah! Okay! Okay!”
You laughed slightly and wrapped your arms around Mileena’s waist. She was your woman.
Tumblr media
Armageddon had arise. Liu Kang gathered people from different time lines to fight in the war. You were scared. Not for you but for your people. What if they had died?
It was up to all of you to stop Titan Shang Tsung. You and your brother had worked as a team defeating all of the enemies you had came across.
It was in the midst of everything that you had lost Raiden. You didn’t know where he was but you hoped he was okay.
You saw four warriors that you did not recognize come down the stairs. You were about to attack until you seen a fan in your vision. Titan Kitana had stopped you. “Allow me.”
In a swift motion, Titan Kitana had defeated them all. Your eyes wide at how easily she had done it. “That was Fan-Tastic.”
Something about it made Titan Kitana smile as in the previous timeline, you also had a sense of humor despite being a god. “You’re welcome. Now hurry. There’s no time to -“
Titan Kitana was pushed off the stairs. You wanted to help her but you had to get to Titan Shang Tsung.
You saw Mileena getting attacked by her double. You immediately kicked her off. Mileena stabbed her double in the face. “I’m never getting used to that.” You said.
”You’re telling me.” You helped Mileena up and the two of you ran up the stairs where Liu Kang was. “(Y/N). Mileena. It’s only a little further. Follow me!”
The three of you made it to the top. “Your defenses have failed Shang Tsung. This is over.” Liu Kang told him.
“I do not think so.”
“Realize sorcerer that you’ve brought this on yourself. Avarice and ego have again proved your undoing. We have no choice but to eradicate you.”
”It is you who will be eradicated. You and your followers. And once you are dead all timelines will be mine.”
Liu Kang ran over to fight Quan Chi as you and Mileena fought Shang Tsung. Shang Tsung managed to over power you both and you both fell to the ground.
Liu Kang began to fight both Quan Chi and Shang Tsung. He managed to match them blow for blow until he was eventually taken down by Quan Chi’s magic.
Mileena was weakened on the ground. Shang Tsung walked over to her. “This would’ve been painless if you just submitted.”
Shang Tsung began taking Mileena’s soul. You watched as her body started to become lifeless.
Something inside of you snapped. Seeing the woman you loved dying flipped something inside you. You had thought you didn’t have any strength. Now you did.
”No!” You screamed. You raised your hand instinctively and lightning shot out your hands. Shang Tsung fell to the ground. Your eyes widened when you did this. You had given the amulet to your brother. How did you have lightning powers?
Mileena watched you in shock. She was too weak to help you though and she hated it. She hated that she couldn’t protect you.
You looked at your hands and then back at Shang Tsung who stood up from the ground. “I don’t know what just happened…” You started to say. “But I’m about to kick your ass.”
Shang Tsung was not bothered by your threat. “Your power is no match for mine. You will fall. The question you must ask yourself is…if Liu Kang couldn’t finish us…how possibly could you?”
You went for the first hit. Shang Tsung blocked it. Quan Chi tried to come up behind you but you stunned him with your lightning. Shang Tsung tried to hit you but you dodged it and kicked his leg, making him fall down.
You spun and kicked Quan Chi. This knocked him down. Shang Tsung tried to use his magic on you but you moved out the way. This made the magic be used on Quan Chi and sent him flying back.
Shang Tsung punched you in the face. You felt your nose bleed. Quan Chi then came up and swept your feet. You fell down. Shang Tsung tried to stomp on your head but you quickly move and zapped him with your lightning.
Quan Chi came up from behind. You grabbed him and threw him over your shoulder. Then you punched him in the face, knocking him out cold.
Shang Tsung seemed to be displeased by this. He tried to charge at you. You blocked every hit he threw. You punched him in his gut. You kicked him in his private area. This made him fall to his knees. You then did a spin kick and kicked him in the jaw where he fell back.
Shang Tsung was tired. He couldn’t fight anymore. You towered over him. Your eyes glowed a blue light. You rubbed your hands together and raised them to his chest. “Clear.”
You shocked him through his soul. Shang Tsung screamed in agony. He then finally passed out.
You watched as the magic that binded Liu Kang broke. You ran over to help Mileena up. Liu Kang ran over to you, impressed at what you had done. Especially as he knew you gave the amulet to your brother and you still gained your powers. “And they call me the Chosen One.”
You shrugged cockily, dusting your shoulders off. “Yeah, well. I am amazing.” Mileena playfully hit you in the chest.
Liu Kang smiled at you. He then used his magic to make the two sorcerers become nothing. When he did that, the whole universe started to shake. “What’s happening?” Mileena questioned.
”The timeline!” Liu Kang exclaimed. “Without Shang Tsung to hold it together, it’s falling apart! You two must return to our timeline before this one collapses.” He started to use his power and it wrapped around you and Mileena. “Thank you for your aid the two of you. May we one day meet again.”
Tumblr media
Being back in Earthrealm sucked. Yes, everything was back to normal but it had been days since the victory of Armageddon. You hadn’t seen Mileena since.
You sat at Madam Bo’s with your Earthrealm comrades. “I still cannot believe you gained lightning power and stopped Shang Tsung.” Raiden said.
”Yeah…” You looked at Liu Kang curiously. “What is up with that?”
”The amulet Raiden now carries was yours in a previous timeline. It must have bonded with you and given you enough power when Empress Mileena was dying.” Liu Kang explained.
You slung your arm around Raiden’s shoulder. “I guess that means you get to keep the amulet after all.” He smiled at you.
”Speaking of Mileena…” Kung Lao said before looking at you. “What’s going to happen between you two?”
You shrugged. “We said we wanted to be together. Shang Tsung is working on a potion that will prevent me from getting Tarkat. I haven’t seen her since Armageddon though.”
”You see her now.”
That voice. You knew and loved. You turned around from your seat and saw Mileena standing before you. “Mileena?!” You exclaimed. You didn’t think twice. You got up from your seat and hugged her.
Mileena hugged you back. “It’s good to see you too, darling.”
You pulled away from her. “How are you here?”
That’s when Liu Kang stood up from his seat. “I invited her here. Her palace needs some…reconstruction and I believed that it would be best if she would stay in Earthrealm for the week.”
Johnny looked confused. “Don’t they got hotels in Outworld?” He was immediately smacked in the head by Kenshi. “Ow!”
Mileena payed her attention towards Liu Kang. “Lord Liu Kang, thank you for allowing me to stay here.”
”You are always welcome, Empress.” He told her before bowing.
Mileena made a motion to you that she wanted to talk to you in private. You looked back at your friends. “I’ll be right back.”
”Sure you will…” Kung Lao teased slightly.
Mileena noticed you were about to flip him off and she pulled at your arm. You took her hand and led her out the restaurant. All the way to the outside where there was a flower garden.
The Empress took something out her pocket. She revealed it to be the potion. “Shang Tsung made it.”
You carefully took the liquid and observed it. “How do we know if it will work?”
“We don’t.” Mileena bit her lip slightly. “(Y/N). You don’t have to do it if you don’t want to-“ She was cut off by you opening the bottle and drinking it. “(Y/N)!”
You finished drinking it and threw it somewhere in the grass. “Finally.” You grabbed Mileena by the hips and kissed her.
Mileena was shocked a little at how sudden it was but did not hesitate to kiss you back. She wrapped her arms around your neck and pulled you closer, deepening the kiss.
It was a very passionate kiss. The two of you had waited what felt like forever. Her lips tasted like cotton candy and hope. Mileena thought your lips were delicious also.
The kiss was starting to get sloppy. The two of you were using a lot of tongue. You picked Mileena up by her ass and made her legs wrap around your waist. You pressed her up against the tree and continued to kiss her like if you stopped she would disappear.
Mileena moaned in the kiss. “You bring out the animal in me.” She said in the kiss.
”Are you trying to turn me on?” You asked her also in the kiss making Mileena giggle.
The two of you continued to kiss. Your lips started to inch towards her chin. Then they went down her neck, making her moan. “(Y/N), we’re in public.”
You really didn’t want to stop nor did you care that you were in a flower garden right now but if she wanted to stop, you’d stop. You pulled away from her neck and gently set her down to her feet. “I guess we’ll know if it works now.”
Mileena looked into your eyes dreamily like she had never seen anyone more perfect. “You are mine now, (Y/N). Do not forget that.”
You smile at her words. “I will not, Empress.”

Monkey Queen meets Male Y/N, she is constantly flirting and teasing him and they did the do and a few months later she comes back to male Y/N with a very noticeable belly bump.
@lara-legomonkiekid
If you're screwed and you'll know what clap your hands😨😨😨
Tumblr media
(Lmk Wukong) You were a male celestial monkey who territories in a jungle biom And you were relaxing. Until the great sage equal to have been showed up, the monkey queens been flirting with you for months. You didn't understand why but she just had a very unique interest in you and will not leave you be. She once again came to your jungle island to Woo. You once again and that's when you finally had enough. Yup, you decided to throw the immortal monkey a bone and spend a day with her. And one thing led to another apparently your mate's now, according to her. But after the day do you went back to your island hopefully she'll leave you alone now that you gave her what she wanted.
But in a few months later, you weren't suspecting. Mk and the gang came barging onto your island demanding to see you. You came out of your tree house home to see what the commotion was Until you finally see the group It's Glaring at you with Anger and disbelief Even what appears to be a female Macaque is their.
Monkey (M/N) I'm sorry who are you and what are you doing in my territory
Female Mk: Forget your territory we need you to look at what you did!😠😠😠
Mk moved out of the way to See a blushing monkey queen With a belly that was not big like that before. Well aren't you screwed😂😂
Tumblr media
(Mk Reborn Wukong) It all started when you were challenged into a fight. The monkey Queen had apparently felt inferior to you and came to you and challenge you to a battle. Of course you guys fought And totally kicked her ass. This enraged her to the max and she came every other day to challenge you to a rematch. You're wondering what's the point of any of this before you saw how she would move her body a Certain way. Or how she would wear nicer clothes or the blush on her face That's when it hits you like a freight train. She is in to you, she wants you And dare you say she is in love with you. Don't get it twisted. She is attractive herself, but you didn't think she would ever give you a second thought. And so finally neither if you couldn't take it anymore and release your passion, Rage, and desires in a very explosive but enjoyable way.
A few months later, as you were hunting for food. You came across a rather familiar monk and a group of pilgrims. The monk gave you a stern expression as the pilgrims looked at you dumbfounded.
Mistress tang: Excuse me are you (M/N) The boy any chance🙇‍♀️
Monkey (Y/N) That's me what can I do for you
Mistress Tang: Well my disciple has something to tell you or rather Show him Wukong 🤨😮‍💨
Sunny Wukong The great sage equal to heaven approaches you with a five Months pregnant belly bump. Oh what a world
Tumblr media
(HIB Wukong) Okay so this time you approached her. You notice how clearly lost her and the little girl named Liuer. She's with so you thought you would give the two some directions. While you were leading the two out of your jungle territory, you chatted up with the monkey queen and fell when you have some similar interest with her. When you both got Got them through you said that they can call me. Visit you anytime and that's exactly what they did. One day the Wukong came by herself Ask you a very personal question. If you can help her throw her a heat. Because apparently she's been struck with it and And the only one that can help her was you. You were shocked as she trust you with this A hundred percent so you had no problem helping her.
A few months later after the defeat of Dun Hun And his demon army the Wukong and Liuer Came to visit you again. Apparently the little girl had some exciting news to share with you.
Liuer: Monkey queen has a monkey baby in her tummy!!!🤩
Your jaw touched the floor as you look towards the monkey. Queen with a very noticeable belly bump and a rather light blush on her face. Well this is interesting
Tumblr media
(NR Wukong) Okay this woman is a whole new different breed of Whore. You always have a Blush and a look of horror on your face whenever she shows up. She spotted you in your Jungle territory and she would not leave you with a hell alone ever since. From very x-rated pick up lines to very inappropriate hand gestures You obviously know what she wants from you, but you Still avoid her like a plague. But she keeps coming back Like a girl scout or worse covid. One night she came over with alcohol To share with you and you're like you know what whatever because well You happen to like Bourban. You really wish you could take back the last few hours back because the next morning You woke up in her bed. And you speed it out of there like a bat out of hell.
A few months later There was loud banging on the door of your home. And when you open that you came face to face with a human girl??? Well, you think she's a human with? Because the ribbon on her wrist looks very familiar. She then introduced herself as Li And she said that somebody owes you an apology and an explanation. Being mad confused, you listened to what she had to say before she Dragged the monkey queen In your home and put her right in front of you. It would be even more confused if it wasn't for Belly bump And it hit you like a truck. Your immortal life just got a whole lot more scarier.
Tumblr media
(Netflix Wukong) She was so innocent. She is innocent cute naive you name it. And very very young At least to you. You didn't mind having Her around your territory just as long she doesn't break anything. She came every day just a attempt to rizz you up or something Like that but her cheesy pick up lines just make you laugh like crazy. She's also pretty curious and has asked you some pretty bizarre questions. But other than all of that you genuinely enjoy her company. And over the time of being together, she shared some rather heartbreaking news to you. She feels that she's always gonna be alone and stuff. But you didn't want her to think that because she's got you. That's when you shared your guys's first kiss And then she told you that she trusts you with her first time as well. You discussed a little more But she claims that she's ready so you decided to give it a go.
You haven't seen her in a few months. And you're really beginning to miss her. Then again, she has told you about all the demon attacks in her village. So she's probably caught up with that. It's not far fetched to you so you just went back to your business. One morning there was a loud banging on your cottage door and apparently You came face to face with a little boy. The boy introduced himself as lynn And he says that he's friends with the monkey queen. You wonder what brought him here and then he calls over Wukong. The little monkey girl approached you shy leave While hiding something behind her armor. When Lynn told her to remove the armor you both saw a unusually big Bumping her mid section. Well that is Explains almost everything.🫥

Wukong ♢ 'Vacation'
Heads up, I haven't seen the sleep bug episode, or any other season than 4 in general, in a while and just remember the general plot moment of the episode. Also the moment of MK trying to get in contact with Monkey King while flexing his new abilities.
All's based in an AU anyway so we shall strife away from the canon timeline- whoo :D
I just know Monkey King doesn't fully return till like the end of season 2, so this shall have major timeskips-
Tumblr media
♢ ~ Angst ~ ♢
"Sun Wukong! Where are you?!", your slightly irritated voice rang from behind some trees as you moved past some foliage, looking for your monkey boyfriend. He was supposed to train MK today and you wanted to pay a visit to Flower Fruit Mountain, but then you caught MK training on his own as his mentor was nowhere in sight.
MK told you that Monkey King decided to take a sudden vacation and that he apparently sent you a message just minutes prior. You didn't notice the message however as you were busy trying to get the sleep bug game notification off your phone. It didn't work, so you ended up just turning off your phone so you could deal with it later at home.
But the fact that he outright left not only you but also the kid like that was quite upsetting.
Knowing the stone monkey, he didn't actually immediately leave. He was probably still somewhere on Flower Fruit Mountain to collect everything he would need just in case while being away. And it seems you were right on the money. You found the Monkey King packing up some leftover things that weren't behind the waterfall or near his and MK's designated training area. The items seemed to not be for a relaxing vacation to be honest.
"Wukong! Why are you going on vacation out of the blue?!" You asked as you approached him with quick steps.
He froze, his tail stiffening for just a second to let you know you startled him. The monkey quickly turned to look at you rather nervously. "A-Ah h-hey heeey, peaches! Wh- Well, what a surprise to see you all the way out here!"
"Mhm. Same to you", you started, glaring at him, "But don't avoid the question. You should be all the way on the other side of the forest and training your successor right now, y'know?"
He waved his hand dismissively, "He's got the basics down and knows how to train himself. I did train for the most part on my own as well. He'll be fine. Besides, it's not like I'll be gone forever. I'll be checking in from time to time." Then he continued to pack two more items.
You were still quite mad at him despite the explanation. "But why are you going on vacation right now and without me?"
That seemed to catch his attention, but not in the way you expected. The simian's ears seemed to twitch a little at your words, but he refused to look at you as he packed another item.
"Listen (Y/N), I simply need to get away and be alone for a while. I'll be visiting some people I know from the past. I'd love to have you on another vacation, just... not this one." His tail lowered itself until it was tucked between his legs. That didn't stop you from feeling left out of yet another mini-adventure. It was far from the first time he insisted on you staying behind due to you being a regular human with nothing more than verbal strength.
This time was no different as you noticed that whatever he had planned, the seriousness in his voice told you enough that wherever he was heading to was not a simple vacation. But that was even more of a reason to at least tell you where he was going!
You clenched your fists in frustration. "Can't you just tell me what's wrong? It's not like you to be this secretive! I know you're off to doing something alone again because of whatever bits of a hero complex you have left, but-" "I can't tell you, okay?!" He snapped back, finally turning to you with the snarl of a feral monkey, catching you off-guard.
"Ugh, that's why I need a vacation right about now too! Gods, you're so pushy in moments like these, I just need a break!"
Tears pricked in the corners of your eyes at his words, but you turned around quickly enough so he wouldn't see. You took a deep breath to calm your nerves and keep your voice from cracking.
"Fine. I hope you have fun on your vacation, Monkey King", you responded as you started to walk away, your back facing him the entire time while tears began rolling down your cheeks.
The simian was still annoyed as he began hopping onto his cloud and taking off. Only halfway to his destination did his brain finally register that you referred to him by his title. That's when the reality of the argument you two just had a few minutes ago hit. And so did the memory of how he described you, followed by you tearing up.
He did notice.
"...Shit", he muttered to himself dreadfully as he facepalmed. As much as he wanted to go back this instant and embrace you before you left Flower Fruit Mountain, his mission had to take priority as the fate of the world was in danger. He would have to apologize to you later...
"Later" turned into several weeks however as he fought to obtain information on how to beat the Lady Bone Demon. Occasionally he would check in on MK, of course. He did ask about you at least once everytime he got in contact with the boy though, even while being in the middle of battle. The guilt that was eating at him was a lot more bothersome than getting his hands on the Samadhi Fire's map.
MK noticed how often his mentor would ask about your well-being and at first thought that it was sweet of him to ask about you... But then he realized he could just get in contact with you directly too. You had a charm in form of a necklace that let you transport to Flower Fruit mountain, as well as open the waterfall and get in contact with your lover.
That's when he started to catch onto the suspicion that something must have happened between the two of you.
"Monkey King, why don't you just talk to (Y/N) directly? They still have the charm you gave them, right?"
The golden image of the Monkey King crossed his arms before scratching his cheek with a frown. He seemed suddenly very much uncomfortable.
"I... Uh... I don't have the time for a lengthy talk with them right now. I still need to visit another friend in a bit! Right! Yeah! Okay, see you later, bud!" "Monkey King, wait-"
And then the connection cut off. Feeling upset and abandoned by the one who was supposed to mentor him through his journey as hero, he decided to give you a call.
The phone rang until he heard your voice. Your recorded voice.
"Hi! This is (Y/N)! Please leave a message if you need anything and I'll listen to it as soon as possible!"
He hung up and tried to call again, but it also only went back to voicemail.
Raising an eyebrow at your sudden unavailability, he decided to just send you a text instead, believing you were busy at work and put your phone on silent.
'monkey king keeps asking about you btw, but doesn't seem to wanna talk to you directly :('
'tell me if you wanna talk to him and i can try get you two in contact'
'if he hasn't talked to you recently that is'
'he acts kinda weird rn tbh'
You should be able to read those messages once you got time. Probably after work.
And yet he never received any text back.
What he didn't know was that you weren't at work. In fact, you were being held captive by the Lady Bone Demon's servant, the Mayor. Him and his Lady knew about your relationship with Sun Wukong and how fragile you were compared to the rest of your friends.
"I don't have anything to offer you!" You yelled out as the Mayor held your arms effortlessly behind your back, forcing you to simply talk to his Lady's glowing image in front of you.
She giggled ominously, "On the contrary, (Y/N). Your destiny has been sealed the moment you agreed to a relationship with that damned simian and befriended his successor."
"What the hell am I of use for to you?! I don't have any special abilities you could even benefit from!" Your voice cracked towards the end from the amount of anxiety you had.
"Well, unfortunately for your frail body, your destiny involves succumbing to your wounds."
Before you could question her any further, the Mayor moved your wrists swiftly, breaking your arms in the process. You cried out in pain, breathing heavily as tears began to fall.
"For you see, the charm Sun Wukong gave you will aid us in creating the New World. Contact him through it." She smirked down at your quivering form. "And even if you decide to be uncooperative, destiny will catch up sooner or later..."
And as suspected, you were being very much uncooperative. So much so that you ended up with more injuries than you could keep count of. Probably half of which included several broken bones from the Mayor's raw demonic strength.
While the Lady Bone Demon wasn't so fond of your refusal to call your boyfriend, she merely saw it as a minor delay. She knew Sun Wukong and the rest of the crew would get suspicious and try find you eventually.
Even if it took days upon Wukong telling the crew to find the three four rings...
And find you they did.
But not in the shape they had hoped.
You were completely bloody and bruised, your limbs were mangled in a rather disturbing way.
The crew was horrified- Not only at the sight, but also at the realization that you were lifeless, dead...
The Monkey King felt the most broken. The memories of your forever last conversation being one big mess of an argument... He thought he was keeping you and the others safe...
He mourned over your dead body, letting his tears fall as he carefully cradled you in his arms, his fur and armor now having bloody spots. MK was struggling with telling his mentor to focus because he himself couldn't fully focus anymore at the sight of a close friend's body. However, the thought of other people, including his other friends, ending up in the same position as you were in was terrifying.
And that was all the motivation they both needed to keep moving. The Great Sage wiped away his tears, looking at your resting form one last time before glaring into the distance.
He would avenge your death, no matter what.
And if possible, would try find a way to bring you back... Even if it involves fighting the Heavens once more.
