27 October 2023 - Friday Field Notes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not much I can show in the way of pictures this week, but we did have this foggy autumn morning earlier. A last clinging breath before the cold settles in...
With shorter and colder days, many plants go dormant in the winter to help conserve energy, reduce water loss, and help protect themselves from frost damage. Deciduous trees have hormones that are triggered by the change in daylight that signal for them to start reabsorbing the nutrients that they used to produce leaves. It's also why leaves turn colors in the fall!

Wack Donalds Galactic Empire World Building
Yeah I said I'd do this if it got 5 notes and it got 0, but what do I care?
Here's the backstory for my dumb episodic sci fi game and the inspiration list:
The classic Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (book)
Dimension 20's A Starstruck Odyssey (live play)
The Young Lief spinoff from Midnight Burger (podcast) ((honestly 90% of the inspiration for the bonkers premise is this and hitchkers))
Oz 9 (podcast) ((players if you hear me say "its not my fault" in a very specific accent thats from this))
a larp a friend started working on a system for where there was a robot revolution
a d6 starwars game i played in where my pc was a robot assassin
my episodic zine based off the combination of those two games! which once i upload it to kofi will be linked here i'm sure
Backstory below the cut for keeping the post succinct on whoever's home screen this winds up on
It is well known in the universe that cows were initially an intergalactic non-space-faring race from the planet Bos Mootarus (bOHs mOO-tar-us). Around the time the rest of the universe became space faring, a capitalist focused planet within the same system of Bos Mootarus began hunting the peaceful species as they discovered their meat was delicious. The capitalist species known as WacDonalds began a corporate take over of the universe, using their delicious Mootaran based meats to establish franchises in many solar systems which led to a financial domination of worlds. As their financial and fast food empire expanded, their breeding and culling practices of Mootarans went unreported as they were non-space-faring and had not connected to the rest of the interconnected galaxies. As Mootarans began to go extinct from increased demand, WacDonalds began to supplement their burgers with an addictive plant by-product, slowly replacing the meat entirely with the plant based material.
A group of revolutionary journalists discovered the culling and genocide of Mootarans and secretly began sneaking them out of the system, to the only other sentient planet without space faring technology- EARTH. EARTH has become a Mootaran Sanctuary where they grow and live in peace (as far as the revolutionaries are aware) and the revolutionaries occasionally still send Mootarans to EARTH for safe keeping. (This is why many depictions of aliens show cows being beamed by spaceships, humans have simply misinterpreted this as abductions instead of the relocation that it actually is. Silly humans.)
WacDonalds has become more desperate to seed the idea that meat is unnecessary, promoting a radical cult of cykoteks which believe that meat is the way of the past. Because their plant by-products can fuel electronics (like corn fueled engines but way better and sciencier) they branched into medical cybernetic research and have begun a branch of the company which provides cybernetik organ replacements. The organ replacements however tend to be faulty, leading to cykotek electrical problems that cause blinding rages and moments of violent psychosis. This new line of revenue has combined with an underground cykotek gladiatorial ring where those who cannot pay off their cybernetic surgeries are sent to fight to pay off their debts to the company.
As time has gone on the Sathars have made it part of their mission to protect the Mootaran Sanctuary, though no one is certain why. The belief that Trump was an alien plant in order to prevent further progress (scientific or otherwise) of the human race is an accurate one.

Thinking about how jimmy neutron's parents just happened to have the surname "neutron" and also gave him the middle name "isaac," which happens to be a pun on "isaac newton," despite having seemingly no interest in science themselves. It's established that he has hypno-technology; is it possible he retroactively made everyone in town believe he had a cooler, sciencier name?

This is the City in the Middle of the Night.  (Oh lord.)  Another real downer of a book, but in a hard-sciencier kind of way, and with added fraught depictions of planet-healing native culture.  Is mega-empath memory sharing the solution to humanity’s problems?  Again?  The silicon valley priesthood seem to think so.

For the Trek ask game!
How about #5 and #9?
5. Starship you’d like to serve on most?
The flagships always go on the important/dangerous missions. I’m really tempted to say I wanna be aboard a science vessel. But then I remember they’re all technically science vessels. And the sciencier ones tend to get involved in extremely risky experiments. *side-eyes the Discovery and the Pegasus* Can I uh... can I be on a space station? *Looks at DS9 which is about ten OSHA violations in the making* Oh wait...
9. Who would win in a fight between the captains?
I haven’t seen every show yet, but my instinct is to say either Janeway or Sisko. Kirk has too much hubris, which would be his downfall. Archer has all of that hubris plus he’s just feral and has terrible plans. Picard is too much of a pacifist to fight... he’d prefer to soliloquize about how the Federation isn’t about violence or some shit. Phillippa, Lorca, Pike, uh... discovery can’t seem to hold down a captain, they’ll get back to you. So that leaves the only two functional captains left. I’ll let you decide who wins.

bookhobbit replied to your post “bookhobbit replied to your post “bookhobbit replied to your post ...”
Right, there are lots of free study guides for the GRE that can help with that, but I'd say give yourself some time to work through them and practice. You managed to survive a sciencier degree than me, so I think you'll have a better/more current grasp on the math. I think probably if you're doing an MA they'll be more important than they might in a PhD because you're less focused on research? But like I said, I think it'll be feasible, just give yourself plenty of time
also that definitely sounds like a More Employable degree to me, though I'm obvs not an expert in the field! My rough understanding is "MAs make your more employable for non-academic work, PhDs just qualify you for academia".
Yeah, I checked out a Kaplan and a For Dummies from the library, to see if they’d be worth purchasing.... I haven’t actually looked at the books yet, but I have them checked out. |D
Thanks. :D I’m not interested in academia, so that’s a good thing to keep in mind. :V This has all been v. helpful, thank you!

do you think maybe they went with cuttlefish for the 80s/90s band because the frills look kind of like perms? also since other than those they look pretty much like inklings, do you think maybe it’s just hair and not that their heads are long? (like how the goth bangs cut is just a big slice of hair)
Hmm, I don’t know enough about 80s~90s fashion in Japan (or, well, anywhere) to weigh in on the perms thing. Maybe??
As for the head, I personally would very much enjoy an All Hair situation from the standpoint of what I’ve been trying to do with my personal sciencier AU. But I think that the angle that the visible head is held at doesn’t look like Hair Physics, but rather more like a Long Head.
If it is indeed a Long Head situation, it does bring up the question of… Do they have a cuttlebone.. I guess it’s in that head area… But also if they have a cuttlebone that should very very hinder the ability to Squish and stuff… Though I guess splat doesn’t particularly care about that. I wonder what they wanted to do there. I also super wish we could see the lighter skinned girl’s head too, for additional reference. Since they ARE still active in the industry, maaaaybe we’ll see them referenced again? Who knows.

The Hunger - The Most Famous Lesbian Vampire Movie (Somehow)
We can't prove that Anne Rice watched this movie about vampire being from Egypt, Actually, but we have a thought or two. It's okay, this movie ripped off Interview with the Vampire first.
Anyway, this is one of those movies that's too good to say the word "vampire," and also makes you watch David Bowie age rapidly. It would all be very sad if not for the things that are so, so bad. Who knows how to write queer women better than a straight man?
4:00 Background Info 8:00 Anne Rice saw this movie 12:00 These vampires are better and sciencier 20:00 WHY IS THERE A CORPSE FURNACE 24:00 David Bowie is sad 27:00 The meat is a metaphor for penises 34:00 "Seduction" 43:00 This sure is a third act 49:00 WE COULD'VE HAD IT ALL (not really) 52:00 Should you watch this movie?
Join us every two weeks on Soundcloud, iTunes or Stitcher – and if you’d leave a rating and review, so that more people can find their way to us, we’d appreciate it!

I’m not sure if I want to watch black tapes as well. the black tapes seems to be more occult/demon stuff than tanis’s sciencier stuff. occult/science is less scary than occult/demons.

Democracy Index 2019: The largest democracy India slips the list along with Hong Kong & Singapore
Tumblr media
The country known as the largest democracy in the world fall the list of "Democracy Index 2019". India's overall score fell from 7.23 in 2018 to 6.90 on the index that provide the current situation of democracy worldwide for 165 countries and 2 territories. Norway topped the list whereas North Korea was in the bottom. India slips 10 places & got the 51st place on the list. The current cause for democratic regression was an erosion of 'Civil Liberties' in the country.
India slipped 10 places to achieve the 51st place on the list of 2019 Democracy Index's Global Ranking. The main cause of slipping 10 places is "Erosion of Civil Liberties" in the country, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit.
India's overall score fell from 7.23 in 2018 to 6.90 in the current list. The index is based on five categories-- Electoral Process or Pluralism, Functioning of Government, Political Culture, Political Participation, & Civil Liberties. We will discuss these terms in details in the further of this article.
Based on their total score the countries are categorized as one of the four types of regimes: 'Full Democracy'(scores greater than 8), 'Flawed Democracy'(scores greater than 6 & equal to 8), 'Hybrid Regimes'(scores greater than 4 or equal to 6), & 'Authoritarian Regimes'(scores less than or equal to 4). And, in this list India was categorized as one of the 'Flawed Democracies'.
Tumblr media
The currently ruling government in India is a Hindu Nationalist government. And, this government has responded very harshly to the ongoing protests against a controversial, a religion based citizenship law(Citizenship Amendment Act - CAA) many Muslims have said that their neighborhoods have been targeted, while the central government has attempted to ban protests and urged TV news channels not to broadcast the "Anti-National" content.
Harsh action of police against the student protests, brutally beating students inside college campus, library & toilets, hate speech by different leaders of ruling party, internet shutdown, shutting Kashmir and detaining the leaders in Kashmir by the Central Government, all these reasons are responsible for the downgrade of democracy in India.
Now, we have discussed what is going on in India, and we will discuss about China, Hong Kong and Singapore too. But, first let's know and understand what the "Democracy Index" really is!!....
What Is Democracy Index??
The Democracy Index is an index compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a UK based company. It intends to measure the state of democracy in 167 countries, of which 166 are sovereign states and 164 are UN member states.
Tumblr media
The index was first published in 2006. The index is based on 60 indicators grouped in five different categories, measuring Pluralism, Civil Liberties, Political Culture, Functioning of Government, & Political Participation. In addition to a numeric score and a ranking, the index categorizes each country in one of four regime types; Full Democracies, Flawed Democracies, Hybrid Regimes, Authoritarian Regimes.
Electoral Process or Pluralism
Pluralism as a political philosophy is the recognition and affirmation to diversity within a political body, which permits the peaceful coexistence of different interests, convictions and lifestyles.
Civil Liberties
Civil Liberties are guarantees and freedoms that liberal governments commit not to abridge, either by legislation or judicial interpretation, without due process. Though the scope of the term differs between countries.
Political Participation
Participation in social science refers to different mechanisms for the  public to express opinions- and ideally exert influence- regarding political, economic, managements or other social decisions.
Political Culture
Political Culture is defined by the International Encyclopedia of the social sciences as the "Set of attitudes, beliefs & sentiments that give order and meaning to a political process & which provide the underlying assumption and rules that govern behavior in the political system.
We are not discussing the fifth term, "Functioning of Government" as it is not that complex to understand the meaning of this term.
Four Regimes
1) Full Democracies
Full Democracies are nations where civil liberties and fundamental political freedoms are not only respected but also reinforced by a political culture conducive to the thriving of democratic principles. These nations have a valid system of governmental checks and balances, an independent judiciary whose decisions are enforced, governments that function adequately, and diverse and independent media. These nations have only limited problems in democratic functioning.
2) Flawed Democracies
Flawed Democracies are nations where elections are fair and free and basic civil liberties are honored but may have issues (e.g. media freedom infringement). These nations have significant faults in other democratic aspects, including underdeveloped political culture, low levels of participation in politics, and issues in the functioning of governance.
3) Hybrid Regimes
Hybrid Regimes are nations with regular electoral frauds, preventing them from being fair and free democracy. These nations commonly have governments that apply pressure on political opponents, non-independent judiciaries, widespread corruption, harassment and pressure placed on the media, anaemic rule of law, and more pronounced faults than flawed democracies in the realms of underdeveloped political culture, low levels of participation in politics, and issues in the functioning of governance.
4) Authoritarian Regimes
Authoritarian Regimes are nations where political pluralism has vanished or is extremely limited. These nations are often absolute monarchies or dictatorships, may have some conventional institutions of democracy but with meagre significance, infringements and abuses of civil liberties are commonplace, elections (if they take place) are not fair and free, the media is often state-owned or controlled by groups associated with the ruling regime, the judiciary is not independent, and there are omnipresent censorship and suppression of governmental criticism.
Reason For Hong Kong's Fall On The Index
Tumblr media
The EIU group said,"Hong Kong fell three places to achieve 75th rank out of 167th of total, because of the long period violent and disruptive protests rocked the Asian Financial Hub. Also an aggressive police response early in the unrest, when protests were mostly peaceful, led to a "Marked  decline in confidence in government-- the main factor behind the decline in the territory's score in our 2019 index".
Reason For Singapore's Fall On The Index
Tumblr media
In Singapore, which also achieved the same rank as Hong Kong, 75th out of 167, a new "Fake News" law led to a deteriorating score on Civil Liberties.
"The government claims that the law was brought just to prevent the dissemination of fake news, but it somehow threatens freedom of expression in Singapore, as it can be used to curtail political debate & silence critics of the government".
Reason For China's Fall On The Index
Tumblr media
China's score fell to just 2.26 in the list, making China to the 153rd spot out of 167th, which is almost the bottom. And, it happened because of China's discrimination against minorities, repression & surveillance of the population intensified. "Still, the majority of the population in the China think that the democracy is not going to benefit their economy, and support for democratic ideals is absent".
Top 10 Countries With Their Total Score On The Index
Norway-             9.87
Iceland-             9.58
Sweden-             9.39
New Zealand-    9.26
Finland-            9.25
