I meant to send this yesterday buy Forgot but it's 3/20 for me now (yay :3) I actually had something else to say but got up writing this ask and that thought left sooo please any new thought for your au :3? Please say as much as you want, I would like to hear it the stage is yours!
Tumblr media
hey ahhh I love okyakusan I love enablers . im going to be the most annoying person on this soapbox. also literally rewriting this because I lost the note this was in like I said not writing it in Tumblr post would be a better idea OH WELL ! I was just spouting nonsense there anyway what was I talking about. ohh right my Adachi rightt right….
The thing with Adachi and how he’s kept me up at nights is how much there is to do with him. In this case with gsaslau, he’s not just “empty,” he’s “emptied”
While I write like there’s a million subplots going on simultaneously in this au (which is. right) the thing about Adachi being the central character somewhat is because of his bond with Mim and what that means for everyone’s Gas Station Attendant Social Link
If we did consider myth, then yeah, we have Izanagi and Izanami; Souji and Marie, Adachi and well. Yeah.
There is significance to each other’s life by the motif of this myth alone. Not even being specific if they’re family, friends, lovers, or adversaries, because it could be that secret third thing (‘you have more than three options’ yeah I know that)
Mim and Adachi’s relationship is so special in a way that it’s like that Tumblr post it’s like. It’s like this
Tumblr media
God’s goal of their social experiment was there to truly determine what humans wanted. Sure, they were born out of the desire to veil the truth and accept more palatable blissful lies, but they went out of their way to confirm that and see if humans had the strength to see past it all and live their lives in truth as they’d always been.
Choosing three human individuals with the qualities at the end of the spectrum and the in-between: to be full of Hope, or full of Despair, or to be nothing but a swirling black hole of Emptiness.
That Izanami tried to push the limits of these qualities as well. How far can Hope be hopeful before falling to despair. Can that of Despair actually stand on his own to feet and be hope for everyone else. Can Emptiness… not be empty.
Izanami saw a literal blank slate enter Inaba. Not anybody who’s lived in Inaba their entire life (Namatame), not anybody who’s returned to Inaba to live their life (Souji). God peeked inside a man’s hollow heart and decided to fill it. Besides taking the most convenient human occupation for that moment, the attendant may as well have come out of that mold and was there to be everything Adachi needed. Trimming out any excess, filling up bubbled spots, polishing everything here and there as time went by. Having to be there for the other pawns they want to keep a close eye on and changing and adapting like a clay doll, remolded and and reshaped to their will, but otherwise staying the same to the mold it first came out from.
Until the imperfections couldn’t be hidden. The fog was seeping, the maggots were crawling, the rot was wafting, the scars were showing. But there should be more to an attendant than working at the gas station, right? Let him have wishes to take care of his home. Never figure out where he goes when it’s not raining. Don’t ask for his name but rather know him by all the things he talks about that is everything but anything about him.
God just made a puppet just enough for the humans they needed to get close to. And what if the self-sabotaging man says he doesn’t like idiots, maybe that’s exactly what he needs. What if he needs someone so much that isn’t like him that he can just be himself. What if he needs something to take care of because he can’t take care of himself. Give him something he’s good at doing and he’ll do it. Give him someone who won’t care what he’s doing and just enjoy him for the person he is. Then take it all away just to see how empty he can get.
What’s worse than being having nothing the whole time—actually having something and now you lose it? What’s the point of learning to love having never loved before then all if it’s taken from you? Why be filled to the brim from a half empty glass only to be tipped over and have your heart spill all over the floor? Was it just better to be empty the whole time, or be emptied from being so full?
Mim literally had a Teddie moment and said “wow I’ll make something so loved and appreciated just so I can stay close to the things I need to monitor” then fucking realized “hey I like it this way actually maybe bonds are a good thing.” Then they remember they have a fucking JOB to do and they’re like “ohh just kidding im a fucking monster they won’t love the real me anyway (god)” and do a Marie and take everyone’s memories of them— the attendant. Because they don’t just want to make a separate sentient being of the identity they just accepted was their own self. If there was going to be an attendant, it would be them. But since they can’t be there, then there’s also no attendant to keep these memories and hearts occupied.
They ran away hoping to cut off all their bonds so people won’t regret associating with a monster, leaving a bunch of people with botched memories and holes in their lives. And they did a really bad job at cleaning up, that there are people who are still chasing after them because these people care. And they don’t WANT these people to pursue the truth because they’ll be so disappointed. Mim ends up trying to erase themself entirely so there’s nothing to chase. The world would be so free and pristine and clear of their influence because they’re gone DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR TO YOU
Mim saw Adachi and said “how can I stay close to this fucking miserable man who I need to use to stimulate this city and get the results I need” then subsequently poured themself into a mold of the emptiness in his heart and out came the attendant. Look at this guy who’s so stupid, who’s an actual idiot, a prettyboy who knows nothing about the outside world, who has a skull so thick and a humor so odd. Literally everything Adachi isn’t—but that was the point. Bitch just interpreted the emptiness inside him and filled him and now they’re fucking worsties besties it’s ridiculous. This is what watching chair car adventure 100000000000 times does to a motherfucker
Mim’s stupid foggy attendant body starts literally melting in the summer heat. Anxious that people would call them out, but being sympathized with and being told they’re just not good in the heat, like other humans. Getting callouses so rough and actually bleeding from a cut on their finger when they thought fog would just seep out. Putting their hand in in their mouth and actually tasting the oil and wax they’ve been working with the whole time. Getting so hot or laughing so hard they actually get flushed until the tips of their ears. Wondering if the maggots crawling in their body made their way out, when the beetles they found in Namatame’s truck made their way into their sleeves and scuttle away. That maybe they didn’t smell like burnt rot, but rather car exhaust and gasoline and tomato juice they spilled on their pants. That maybe when they pull back their sleeves or look under their shirt it could be skin with lungs breathing and a heart beating rather than decaying flesh hanging off of bone.
Adachi learning how to open his heart to things and let things inside, while a puppeteer stops puppeteering and their smiles actually hurt their face because they can’t stop. Both becoming more human again in their own ways, the other quite literal. Both running away and sabotaging themselves for the sake of the people and the home they learned to love, neglecting to love themselves. I’ve made them both so alike it’s sickening even to me but it’s so fun I have dolls that are beaten up so much I drive their faces into the ground because that’s how I play with dolls and have fun SORRYY
And this is how they are best friends. Which is an essay that is just as badly structured but still expresses what I want to say probably. I lied actually. There’s more than one, but still.

You got me into your CCA au so ,,, any info on the au?
God, I have *so* much info, like you would not believe-
I’m going to start with simple details into a few of the characters, but a brief explanation into the AU is also deserved. Basically, this is partially a college AU mixed up with a bunch of realistic scenarios and lesser talked about subjects.
There are several characters that it will follow and all the subplots are weaved together like a textile rug, all interconnected and important to each other. We’ll start out with the “Bad” sans gang, and I’ll tell you a little bit about them!
Nightmare - Currently a Junior in college. Studying pre-law, getting his bachelor’s degree before heading off to law school. - Was adopted as an infant into a more than well-off family. Both his adoptive parents are in judicial practices, as is his adoptive grandfather. He bears a heavy expectation on his shoulders. - He often is forced into taking trips away from campus, signed off for by his adoptive father, who is also a lawyer, teaching him how to work cases.
Killer - Currently a college freshman. Didn’t really want to go to college, and has an undeclared major. Is super socially adept and driven to find the “party scene” lifestyle. - Came to the school on a deferred sports scholarship. - Cross was the one who first introduced him to Nightmare and the others.
Dust - Currently a Junior. Didn’t interact with Nightmare at all until their Sophomore year. Horror was actually the one to introduce the two. - Currently studying to be a literature major, spending most of his time reading. He and Nightmare got along well through that, swapping book recommendations. - Roommates for the whole of the three years with Sci. Sci and Farm introduced Horror and Dust to each other.
Horror - College senior. Always assumed to be a jock due to his size, but is actually double majoring in agriculture and bioengineering. - Met Nightmare during his Sophomore year. The younger began tutoring him in math, as he has suspected Dyscalculia. - Roommates with Farm. The two met in an agriculture program and decided to room together Junior year.
Cross - Sophomore. Here on a sports scholarship that he doesn’t want. Was always pushed to be “well rounded”. Currently taking an interest in law enforcement, but considering nursing as well. - He and Nightmare had a chance first encounter, when he was a Freshman. Nightmare has a ritual of taking walks in the evening, spotted Cross practicing alone, and struck up a conversation across a chainlink fence. This ritual continues to this day. - The real voice of reason in the group when Nightmare is away, but also very much trying to let the others make good decisions for themselves and then trying to fix it for them.
Error - Currently a Junior. Nightmare’s roommate Freshman year. The two mutually agreed to stay out of each other’s way and bonded over their reclusiveness. - Changed housing when Nightmare began living off campus, getting stuck in a three person unit with Fresh and Geno. - Currently, he and Fresh take turns delivering weekly schoolwork to Geno while he’s in and out of hospital.
If you have more questions, please ask! I’m so excited to answer them. <3

Fazbear Frights was an underground series of horror comics released from the Autumn of 1985 to the Winter of 1989 outside of the CCA. Known for it's graphic content and banned in most places for it's depictions of child murder, this comic series is infamously rare and difficult for collectors to get their hands on. In recent years, however, it's become more famous for the ways it seemingly predicted events in the history of Fazbear Entertainment before they even happened.
(Horror cover inspired by Jack Sparling!)

GRRM says Stan Lee made Comics a "respectable medium", do you agree? I always thought Lee, his involvement in CCA, and Marvel's focus on capeshit under him ultimately held back the medium.
I think it's indisputable that Stan Lee profoundly changed how comics were viewed in American culture (keep in mind, comics used to be seen as only slightly more scandalous than porn); even a more warts-and-all portrait like Riesman's True Believer points out that Stan Lee was a hugely successful promoter, salesman, and public personality. The whole "Merry Marvel Bullpen"/"Marvel Marching Society"/"No-Prize" stuff, the letters columns, the tv shows and cartoons, all of it made Stan Lee kind of the Walt Disney of comic books and made comics seem like a more wholesome pasttime for American adolescents.
Later on, Stan Lee's campus lectures (even though they were ultimately rather facile in their analysis) and his (wildly self-aggrandizing and mendacious) interviews with alternative news organizations like the Village Voice played a big role in making Marvel a significant element of the counter-culture and making comics "cool" for teenagers and college students to read.
Tumblr media
Regarding Stan Lee's involvement with the CCA, are you referring to him breaking with the CCA over the Spider-Man issue or something else?
As for the focus on superhero comics, I think that was both incredibly successful and a necessary adaptation, given how the moral panic panic around comics in the 50s centered around horror and crime comics. Keep in mind, there really wasn't a market for what we call indie comics today until the counter-culture emerged in the late 60s/early 70s (and even then, we didn't really see indie comics comics until really the 80s with the British Invasion).

"Barry is a character who was consciously designed to fit the zeitgeist of America and specifically the comics industry of the mid-1950s in the immediate aftermath of the Comics Code Authority (ask me about my theory on this!)" - here I am, asking (for real, I know next to nothing about Barry so I would be interested to hear more if you want to elaborate)
Yessss I would love to elaborate!
So apologies if this is stuff you already know, but the first Flash was Jay Garrick, who debuted in 1940, during what's called the Golden Age of Comics. There's no universal agreement on what the exact date range is for the Golden Age (or Silver, Bronze, etc.), but a range you'll often see is 1938 (the debut of Superman) to 1955.
However, with superhero comics, when we say Golden Age, we're really mostly talking about World War II, because after the war, superheroes became much less popular. At the time, monthly comics included lots of genres, like crime, horror, romance, humor, war, Westerns, sci-fi, etc., and crime and horror in particular became increasingly popular in the postwar years. Some of them also became increasingly violent, sexy, and edgy, in part to retain the audience of returning GIs from overseas, who had read comics to remind them of home during the war.
However, the primary audience for comics was children. Children who could easily buy a comic for a dime and read it without parental supervision. Children who could be turned into juvenile delinquents by reading comic books!
There was a massive backlash against comics in the late 40s and early 50s, led by parents and other "moral authorities" (teachers, librarians, churches) who thought comics were bad for kids. Most of you reading this will have seen similar parental backlash against whatever the target of the moment is: gangster movies, crooners, rock 'n' roll, rap, heavy metal, video games, Dungeons and Dragons, Harry Potter. (I'm not talking about JKR's wretched transphobia here but the fear in the late 90s that Harry Potter would turn kids into Satanists or whatever.)
There were boycotts. There were bonfires where all the kids in town would have to bring all their comics to be burned. There was Seduction of the Innocent, a book by psychologist Frederic Wertham where he claimed to have proven that comics turned kids into juvenile delinquents (he hadn't). Many people left the industry for good, and a lot of them later talked about those days with genuine trauma. I highly recommend the book The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic Book Scare and How It Changed America for more on this, but it's fascinating, and necessary reading for those of y'all on this webbed site who think we need to bring back the Hays Code and its ilk.
This all culminated in Senate hearings in 1954 to determine whether comics were harmful to children. (Fun fact: these hearings began on the same day as the McCarthy hearings. Political repression and artistic repression always go hand in hand.) In the aftermath of these hearings, the comic book industry created the Comics Code Authority, because that way they could self-regulate instead of being regulated by the government.
The Comics Code was a list of what could and could not be in comics. It was mostly what you'd expect - no sex or violence - but also a lot of conservative 1950s censorship. Like: "Policemen, judges, government officials, and respected institutions shall never be presented in such a way as to create disrespect for established authority." That's...pretty totalitarian.
Comic book publishers would submit comics for approval to the CCA. If they passed, the comic would be published with a seal on the cover saying "Approved by the CCA." They didn't need the seal to publish, but if they didn't have the seal, most vendors wouldn't sell the comic. So most of them pretty much had to comply.
So what does this all have to do with Barry Allen?
As I said earlier, superheroes fell in popularity after WWII, and many books were canceled. Jay Garrick's last Golden Age appearance was in 1951, and he hung on longer than most. But after the CCA, the landscape of comics had changed, and DC decided to see if they couldn't make the superhero work in this brave new world.
So in 1956 they took the idea of the Flash - guy who runs fast - and changed everything else about him. The new Flash was named Barry Allen, and he was a police scientist with a snazzy new costume. He was an immediate hit, DC went on to revamp a number of other characters in similar fashion, and a new era was born. Literally: many scholars date the start of the Silver Age of Comics to Barry's debut.
It's worth noting, I think, that DC was staunchly behind the creation of the CCA. Their stock in trade was superheroes, who were mostly considered harmless. But the backlash against comics and the creation of the CCA seriously harmed a lot of their competitors, and eventually put the ultra-popular EC Comics, who specialized in horror and crime, out of business.
I'm not saying DC had Barry in mind already when they supported the formation of the CCA. But they saw that the field had been cleared and there was an opportunity to bring their main genre back to the forefront. And then they created a squeaky clean, incredibly white guy from the Midwest. Who is a scientist, because 1950s kids need to be inspired to go into science so that we can beat those Ruskies to the moon! But who is also a cop, because kids need to respect law and order, or else. (This was also an era in which former vigilantes Superman and Batman were officially deputized by their respective local police forces.)
None of this means that Barry is a bad character, or that his Silver Age comics aren't good, because they are actually extremely innovative and very fun. But it does mean that he was created as essentially copaganda for children during an era of intense political conservatism in the US and deep fear in the comic book industry. He worked well in the 50s and 60s (DC in the 60s was basically still living in the 50s, which is why everyone older than 10 switched to Marvel) but increasingly less well as the world around him changed, and DC's attempts to modernize him in the 70s and early 80s (killing off Iris so that he could be a swingin' bachelor living in...wait for it...an apartment building!!!) were just kind of embarrassing. Barry's death in Crisis on Infinite Earths is the most noble death I've ever read in comics, but it was also a mercy killing.
I think Barry could be updated for the 21st century in a way that is true to his roots but doesn't make him feel like a relic or a jerk. But so far, DC hasn't really bothered? Instead we get moments like Barry declaring that Hal is the only JLAer who really gets him because "we're both cops" or arresting a Black 12-year-old for graffiti-ing an already destroyed building. Oof, friends. Oof.
In conclusion, Barry was designed for major cultural and industry-wide changes of the mid-1950s but that was 70 years ago and the man desperately needs a makeover that is not putting on his nephew's personality like an ill-fitting suit and saying "How do you do, fellow kids?" The end.

i would love to see you flex your comic autism. pls. i love learning. a list of ten TRUE OBSCURE dc facts about the jsa or a specific favored character. pls seeing you blog makes me want to dive deeper into my own obsession about dc.
this is sweet, thank you :') my whole thing started because i saw somebody being like "the jsa huac trial is a direct parallel to the cca disbanding most of the industry???" like it was the greatest revelation of our collective lifetime and it's just plain ridiculous to me because if you've got even the faintest passing familiarity with any form of media then you've heard of the hollywood blacklist and mccarthyism and you know twenty-something year olds paul levitz & gerry conway didn't personally come up with the concept for the hell of it in the late 70s!
fact of the matter is that all-american comics and national comics both operated under an in-house code not dissimilar to the one imposed by the comics code authority, and the vast majority of their superhero comics could've been approved by the cca with frankly very few changes. you have to note that western, horror, and crime comics -- the worst offenders according to the cca -- became the biggest hits of the 1950s while fredric wertham's 'seduction of the innocent' was published in '54, and the jsa had already taken it's last bow in '51. what killed the superhero back then was a simple matter of shifting trends, the war was over and 90% of superheroes were based entirely around helping the war effort -- audiences wanted to forget the wartime years, and genre comics made it big for a good ten years. this isn't to say that the cca didn't deal a near-fatal blow to the industry, it certainly did, as had the kefauver hearings in 1950 but superheroes (=/= comics) were very much already on the way out by then.
so, it's in that context, that the jsa's huac troubles are quite directly & literally referencing the real life house un-american activities committee because the timeline coincides perfectly with the end of the jsa's golden age adventures. it's all part of the same era of censorship and paranoia, of course, but even the most in-depth exploration of the jsa's huac hearing in the golden age 1993 sees it as synonymous with the hollywood blacklist and follows the same line of thinking about the public having already outgrown the wartime superheroes. you can read more on the cca in various full length articles i've posted here, here, and here.
as for obscure facts, i think there's nothing half as delightful as finding out stuff for yourself so i'd like to recommend you all four volumes of roy thomas' all-star companion and any & all issues of alter ego and back issue that seem interesting to you -- all widely available wherever you read comics, or i can link you to anything specific if you'd like to dm me, there's also a lot of articles on my blog in the tags for these books/mags. it's important to me that here at ufonaut dot edu we don't perpetuate the classic fandom attitude of 'this is the right/true thing because [x person] told me it is', i want to share the joy of actually reading & learning this history!
i will however tell you that one of my absolute fav obscure facts is mart nodell basing his original sketch of alan scott's green lantern costume on douglas fairbanks as the black pirate

You guys wanna hear abt an AU UTMV without any pictures or whatever...? Cool! Stay tuned then! BEFORE YOU GO In this MV Nightmare gets killed and reincarnated, Blue prefers Dust and Horror to the Stars, and Killer ran away from a mental hospital <3 Hope that was enough to encourage you to read this post. This MV is not completed yet and I would appreciate any suggestions :p
So, everything starts as it usually does - the lack of the balance in the MV. The negativity here overdrives the positivity, getting the Star Sanses, mainly Ink and Dream, to wonder how they could fix it. The solution they came up with is simple: a reset of Dreamtale. The issue is - Dreamtale cannot be reset. What else is there then? Might not seem obvious to you, but, technically speaking, you could just erase Dreamtale as a whole and then wait for it to recreate, getting Nightmare to his initial state.
So Ink and Dream, not involving Blue, as he certainly would deem that a little immoral, decide to lure the bad guys to a battle there, a battle that would include Error as well, giving the Stars access to the code. Why the code? Why, of course to pour solvent right onto it!
When such a battle actually happens, Dream and Nightmare get dissolved (painfully :) at least mentally painfully-). Aaaand the same goes for Ink as he was accidentally affected by the solvent. As the world gradually disappears, everyone tries to get away as quickly as possible. Error accidentally pulls out some not yet dissolved fragments of the Dreamtale code to the Anti-Void. It shapes them into Saturn and Venice (I might change the names later-) - the new Guardians of Emotions - basically the only thing that kept this MV from shattering completely, as it suddenly lost its Protector/Creator and the previous Guardians in the same day.
The bad guys, that is, two of them, are assigned to a mental clinic, with Color as one of its psychologists :) The ones assigned there are Dust and Killer. The latter one runs away, whilst the former actually gets his medical treatment and even kind of becomes "healthier". Together, Dust and Horror then take care of Blue, whose scarred for life and try to help those in need. (That doesn't line up with what Dust's character is all about? Oh well, haha, in my i n t e r p r e t a t i o n, Dust is much, much more of a confused than a bloodlusty fella - he murders others out of "mercy", wanting them to not suffer the resets. His schizophrenia encourages him in this. And, yes, I made changes to all the chars' characters (except Cross cuz I got literally no idea what do I do with him-).)
Meanwhile, Dreamtale is actually "reset". Nightmare wakes up the day, khm, my interpretation, when he decided to eat the apple out of his suicidal wishes, so, when he was cca 14. Dream, trying to keep brother near, kind of "locks him up" in the house or wherever they live- (I just understood that I never wondered that-) Nightmare, certainly unhappy with such a decision aaaand with a lot of responsibility and guilt to deal... Decides to just ran away from all his problems. And so he does. There, in some not too popular nor too unpopular, quite negative AU (haven't decided what AU quite honestly-), he meets Killer and...
Aaaaaand that's it! I haven't covered all the material (by that I mean the characters and their attitudes to each other) but that is already waaaay too frigging much text- I am quite unsure what exactly could happen after them meeting (except maybe some problems with the new Guardians), so, if anyone's interested, I'm all for suggestions! The same goes for Cross, who's just- I have no idea what to do with him quite honestly.
Anyways, thanks for your attention and I apologize for all the grammar mistakes (eng is not my first lang)
See ya later, baiiii~
Ах да, и здесь Дрима с Инком зовут не звездной, а звезданутой двоицей))

For Your Consideration -- CCA 2023
Greetings, Rumbelle peeps!
It's that time of year again. Our beloved awards event for Rumbelle fic and art has a new name and blog -- The Chipped Cup Awards, but we ARE having an awards event.
I've posted almost nothing new in the past year. However, in the spirit of participation and supporting the new event, I'm making an FYC post anyway. I went back through my entire body of work, and I'm putting forth anything that I feel fits the categories, even if it's a few years old.
And you know what? I encourage everyone to do the same. With the fandom getting smaller and less active, it's expected that there will be fewer new works to nominate. Maybe now is a good time for some older or previously overlooked works to get recognition. Several dedicated Rumbellers have put a lot of work into building a new awards event for us, so let's support it.
That said, my FYC list with the categories I believe they fit is under the cut.
FLUFF
Comfort - In Sickness and in Health
Soon after leaving Storybrooke to travel the Realm Without Magic, the Golds' trip is interrupted.
Reunion - The Other Fork in the Path
An alternate ending to a scene from 1x21, "An Apple Red as Blood."
ANGST
Hurts So Good – Beyond the Door
Rumplestiltskin finds out that his son Gideon may still be able to access the Dream Realm, and that presents an opportunity that he can't ignore.

Wait, don't people hate obnoxious gritty reboots??
That's the thing. DC has two very different audience: the part that loves the campiness and originality and in most cases the characthers and the part that likes the edginess, the dark emotions and in some cases the whole cishet male fantasy aspect.
So this gritty reboots end being complicated because they alienate a huge chunk of the audience but at the same time appeal to another also big part of them. That being said I do think making comics grittier is the wrong way not only because I personally dislike them but because the percentage of fans that like the campy aspects is growing more as fandom Internet groups focus more on the likeable characthers, tik tok and YouTube vídeos that end up being the doorways to new audiences preffer to talk about the zaninnes and a lot of subcultures are going back to campy (specially the queer ones as we are migrating back to our origins in popular media with both Batman and Wonder Woman pre CCA having had an impact on old queer and bdsm comunities almost as much as the old horror comics).
Basically it's complicated but I do think the age of gritty reboots is ending quickly and DC should get in the boat and stop being a part of it before it is too late (maybe understand that edgy and complex are different things).
Disclaimer: if the various I think aren't enough this are merely opinons based on my own observations on fandom spaces so if I'm wrong in some part feel free to correct me but please don't be rude about it.

I’m of the opinion that ZZ is a series that has a great set of characters and an interesting premise. and that it had its kneecaps busted in around the time CCA went into production and it no longer mattered, because even though it’s my favorite of the original three Gundams boy howdy is that last third messy.
But I am curious to hear what problems you have with it, because you don’t seem like the kind of guy to hate the silliness of the first half.
Nope, I'm completely fine with the silliness. Contrary to what some alleged Gundam vets will tell you, Gundam has always been goofy to some degree. 0079 was plenty goofy in the first half, for example.
You know what 0079 also did? Gradually ramp from "toy commercial" to "wartime horror story". ZZ goes from Xabungle to Mini Victory Gundam from one second to another, you have funny mishaps and then suddenly every named character starts dying gruesome deaths and I'm supposed to care. The pacing is garbage.
"boy howdy is that last third messy." <- this, pretty much.

CCA!AU Playlist/Song Masterlist:
My Alcoholic Friends - The Dresden Dolls (Gives off heavy Blue and Lust vibes)
The Bidding - Tally Hall (Major Killer and Lust energy)
Verbatim - Mother Mother (Horror, Dust, and Lust share this energy)
Turn The Lights Off - Tally Hall (Exclusively Dust’s energy)
Oops I Did It Again - Britney Spears (Chorus specifically plays to Blue and Dream)
Clarity (Remix) - Zedd ft. Foxes (Undetermined who this best characterizes)
Hello Me & You - Superorganism (just a song that gives me the right energy for an animatic for this AU)
Youth - Daughter (Vibes undetermined, fitting)
(If you would like to suggest a song for me to listen to and see if it fits, I will gladly do so, send an ask or something, I don’t bite)
