headcanon that james swore that he's never going to die during a holiday. back on the 31st of october, he was celebrating diwali, a holiday that brought him close to his natal lands, to his blood family, for the first time with his wife, the woman he'd love forever, and his newborn son, hari, the boy he loved like the light of his eyes

The marauders era, wish fulfilment and trans masculinity
Now that I’m in my Harry Potter/Marauders phase, I’ve been thinking about the aspects of this fandom that appeal so much to trans masculine people like myself. The marauders era, as fans depict it, is this idealised version of boyhood that many trans mascs didn’t get to have. It’s the ultimate wish fulfilment fantasy: a group of ragtag boys in the prime of their youth mucking about in a setting as fantastical as Hogwarts. It’s no surprise that the marauders era appeals to so many trans mascs that never had that freedom or growing up.
In my case I was raised as a brown girl in a white society. I was expected to always be more mature and level-headed than my peers. Any deviation from those expectations got me into trouble— far bigger trouble than my male or white peers. I both love and hate seeing marauders content, especially Desi James Potter content. It reminds me of the carefree boyhood that I never got to have; the boyhood I was denied for so many years.
I’m sure many trans folks can relate: through these characters we get to boys either for the first time or, for those who had their adolescence cut short in whatever capacity, we can go back to being boys once more.
(Deep down, we never really stopped.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Speedy Acquaye, Hirohiko Araki, the 1969 debut of Blind Faith, Beryl Booker, Gwendolyn Brooks, Royce Campbell (Funk Brothers), THE JOHNNY CASH SHOW 1969 TV debut, Georgiana Cavendish, the great Johnny Clegg, Silas Roy Crain (Soul Stirrers), George Ezra, Tal Farlow, William Forsythe, Gordon Gano, Paul Gauguin, Nikki Giovanni, Juan Luis Guerra, Damien Hirst, Nihad Hrustanbegović, Tommy James & The Shondells 1969 “Crystal Blue Persuason” single, Mickey Jones (Man), Tom Jones (great to have met you), Paddy McAloon (Prefab Sprout), Dave Navarro, Liam Neeson, Ken Osmond, Prince, Jack Ryland (3 Dog Night), George Szell, Jessica Tandy, Karl Urban, Clarence White, and the legendary, consummate entertainer, comedian, singer, and actor, Dean Martin. In the late 1940s he broke out in a hugely successful comedy duo with Jerry Lewis, then was seared into public conciousness with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. in The Rat Pack. My respect for Dino grew around his musical choices and catalogue of material. I do several covers of his songs (especially in my care home set) and my original song “Somebody Loves You (Like Dino Said)” has a direct refraction on Dean’s “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You.” In 1955 he had a #1 hit with the folk-doo wop song “Memories Are Made of This.” It became a theme for a book written by his daughter Deana, a singer in her own right whose career intersected with The Monkees and Davy Jones (they also dated back in the day), and there was a phase where she’d sit in on our gigs + she sang with us at Davy’s 2012 New York memorial and a Monkees Convention in 2013. Davy was also close friends with Dino Martin (of Dino Desi & Billy), and when they weren’t driving old army tanks around in the desert, they played pool with Dean at Dean’s home. Davy was quite a comedy quipster, and he often said, “It’s OK to steal my jokes. I just stole them from someone else.” One of his “someone else” sources was Dean Martin.
“Memories Are Made of This” was written by Richard Dehr, Terry Gilkyson, and Frank Miller—as The Easy Riders, they provided the vocal harmonies on Dean’s version. After the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the song was adapted into the "Honvágy-dal" ('The Song of Homesickness”) and used as an unofficial anthem for refugees scattered around the world. Recorded by Ida Boros, it became a cultural phenomenon and a sign of protest against the communist government. The standard English version has been covered countless times (notably by Little Richard, Johnny Cash, and Cliff Richard & The Shadows), and here’s how I do it in my assisted living home set. Meanwhile, HB Dino—thank you for the hours of humor and song you left us.

Desi James!
So, fair warning to all of you that is this a very chaotic disorganised brain barf kinda bulleted fic about my boy James because I refuse to accept that he is a white boy, sorry not sorry. But i LOVE Indian James so so much and I just HAD to write him a lil something. so enjoy!  ~
First off, I refuse to believe that James is not the chaotic Indian child that I believe he is. No, I will not be taking any suggestions
But imagine young James running around his neighbourhood on Holi, playing with the neighbouring kids.
The amount of PRANKS oh my god. it is absolute PANDEMONIUM.
Of course, Mrs Potter makes Kachoris and thandai and Dahi vada.
James is SUCH a mother’s boy it’s not even funny. He loves her to death
But let's be honest here, who wouldn't? That’s Euphemia potter right there; you can't help but love her.
James being waAAAAaayy ahead of everyone in his class in all the general muggle subjects when he gets to hogwarts because he studied ICSE.
There was a time when Sirius thought he knew everything in the world cause he knew all the maths and science and social science that ICSE taught him (RE: James potter is an adorable nerd)
James curses in Hindi so he rarely ever gets in trouble for foul language.
Remus is insanely jealous
So naturally, James teaches Sirius and Remus all the Hindi cusses he can think of. (he spends half his time rolling on the floor at their accents. It’s brilliant.)
Cue Snape being the slimy git he is; he puts bright gold dye in James’s shampoo
James: “ABBEY MADARCHOD BHAES KE LAUDE TERI TO-”
Everybody is Very Confused ™ but Sirius and Remus can barely hold him back for how hard they’re laughing. James looks like an enraged Oscars trophy
Sirius picking up little bits of Hindi from when the potters adopt him and soon their notes in class are almost all in Hindi.
Added bonus: barely anyone can figure out their maraudering plans now; they’re all in Hindi.
Okay, James smuggles SO MUCH Maggie into Hogwarts it is UNREAL.
I’m pretty sure he could feed the entirety of Hogwarts for a full year, and they’d still have some left over.
And of course, nobody grows up around Euphemia and doesn’t know how to cook.
So whenever his boys are upset, James sneaks down to the kitchens and makes them all Indian food.
BUT IMAGINE THE MARAUDERS’S FIRST BIG FESTIVAL TOGETHER!!!!
I’m gonna go ahead and say it's Diwali cause why not?
James absolutely forgets that his parents speak Hindi too, and he casually calls Sirius bakchod or something and his mother raises an eyebrow at him across the table.
Whoops
THE FOOD THE FOOD THE FOOD THE FOOD
The boys take a whole day to drive around the city eating every Indian street food imaginable.
It is bliss.
Both Sirius and Remus vow never to have any other kind of food again
James promises that he’d always cook for them whenever they wanted
JUST INDIAN JAMES OKAY???
~ translations and context: - ‘ABBEY MADARCHOD BHAES KE LAUDE TERI TO-’: you motherfucking son of a buffalo im going to-  - Kachoris and thandai and Dahi vada.: Traditional indian food typically made for Holi: the festival of colours -  Maggie: aka my favourite thing EVER. its essentially indian ramen and it is WONDERFUL you have to try it - Diwali: the famous festival of lights!

omg just found out you are south indian!! i honestly wasn't sure and didn't feel comfortable asking bc i sometimes avoid reading desi james if i'm not sure if the authour is also desi. the characterizations just don't hit right sometimes, but no shade to non-desi folks that write desi james! honestly appreciate the representation lol! so excited to read come together now!! hope this wasn't a weird ask lol im def just thought vomitting here. love u! (ps do you have any fancasts?)
HEY pal no worries, i get that that might be weird to ask 😂 but i am v much indian and love fleshing out james’s background — you’ll get quite a bit of that in come together. thanks for the nice message and hope you enjoy and feel that i’ve done us desi ppl some justice lolll!!
re: fancasts… oh boy HAHA i’m terrible with them. i like sophie skelton for lily (thanks bestie @clare-with-no-i) because she captures the mix of wry and self-assured and approachable and friend-shaped (LOL) that to me is so very lily, though her hair is not exactly the way sophie’s is styled for outlander in my head (more wavy rather than curly or straight, though curly-haired brianna is SUCH a mood for my historical-er fic).
for james i have exactly nothing and no one because i can’t get the right look that’s in my head — there are ones i like and will happily salute lol (dev patel my lovely) but i don’t see them as matching my james. there’s probably art ive reblogged on here that’s closer than any celebrity!

“you’re my mariah carey” :: a david/patrick fanmix
schitt's creek is over but my feelings aren't. here's the evolution of d & p's relationship through songs you know and songs you don't, folk/indie (because patrick), pop (because david), and some obligatory fire metaphors. also people from broadway because of who i am as a person.
listen here
track breakdown below the cut!
o1. someone to you // BANNERS :: "he’s a business major who wears straight-leg, mid-range denim. he’s not into me.”
o2. softly // clairo :: (except patrick is more into david than he’s ever been into anyone else.)
o3. mystery of love // sufjan stevens :: a first date and a first kiss.
o4. fired up // grace carter :: david, slowly learning to trust.
o5. i’ll get the coffee // kathryn gallagher :: new-relationship bliss.
o6. simply the best (cover) // noah reid :: open mic night.
o7. safe (acoustic) // shook twins :: “you stood in front of me and told me to trust people ... when i was perfectly fine not trusting people. not trusting people is what i’m used to.” (or, “the barbecue.”)
o8. you & me // james tw :: “you make me feel right, david.”
o9. the best // tina turner :: an olive branch.
1o. like mariah // fifth harmony feat. tyga :: patrick says “i love you.” he also says "you’re my mariah carey,” which david physically and emotionally cannot handle. pop music ensues.
11. finally (beautiful stranger) // halsey :: “i’ve been burned so many times i’m basically the human equivalent of the inside of a roasted marshmallow. but ... sometimes it does work out ... when you’ve got it, don’t let it go.” (or, david says “i love you’ back.)
12. bonfire heart // james blunt :: they’re not boring. they just don’t need anything else when they have each other.
13. adore you // harry styles :: “i couldn’t do it ... david, i love you, and i appreciate what you were trying to do for me, but i don’t feel the need to meet up with other guys right now.”
14. all my days // alexi murdoch :: patrick’s parents come to town. patrick reflects on just how transformative his relationship with david has been.
15. map of your soul // desi oakley :: “you made everything okay.” (or, patrick in the exact moment he realizes he’s going to ask david to marry him.)
16. fred astaire // jukebox the ghost :: general season 5 wholesomeness. season 5 is a good look for these two. i mean, look at “the mvp” alone. also, patrick can’t dance.
17. i choose you // sara bareilles :: a hike and a proposal.
18. ease my mind // ben platt :: the incident, aka the one where david’s anxiety is at an all-time high and patrick still makes him feel safe and loved.
19. home // phillip phillips :: “i’m gonna make you so happy here.” “you fucking better.”
20. precious love // james morrison :: the wedding, featuring a song that carries multiple layers of significance for one david rose.
21. always be my baby (cover) // tim halperin :: vows.
22. lover // taylor swift :: david and patrick in their new little cottage, married, running their business together in the town where they fell in love. this is the ever after.

LUCY ON THE DAIS - Part Two
Tumblr media
“All-Star Party for Carol Burnett”
December 12, 1982 on CBS
Directed by Dick McDonogh
Produced and Written by Paul Keyes
Music by Nelson Riddle
THE PARTY-GOERS
Tumblr media
Carol Burnett (Honoree) got her first big break on “The Paul Winchell Show” in 1955. A years later she was a regular on “The Garry Moore Show.” In 1959 she made her Broadway debut in Once Upon a Mattress, which she also appeared in on television three times. From 1960 to 1965 she did a number of TV specials, and often appeared with Julie Andrews. Her second Broadway musical was Fade Out – Fade In which ran for more than 270 performances. From 1967 to 1978 she hosted her own highly successful variety show, “The Carol Burnett Show.” Lucille Ball made several appearances on “The Carol Burnett Show.” Burnett guest starred in four episodes of “The Lucy Show” and three episodes of “Here’s Lucy,” subsequently playing a character named Carol Krausmeyer. After Lucille Ball’s passing, Burnett was hailed as the natural heir to Lucy’s title of ‘The Queen of TV Comedy.’
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes.

Two years later, “All-Star Party for Lucille Ball” also featured Monty Hall, Sammy Davis Jr., Burt Reynolds, James Stewart, and Vicki Lawrence.
Tumblr media
Variety, the Children’s Charity is an organization founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1927, when a group of eleven men involved in show business set up a social club which they named the Variety Club. On Christmas Eve 1928, a baby was left on the steps of the Sheridan Square Film Theatre. When efforts to trace the mother failed, the Variety Club named the child Catherine Variety Sheridan, after the club and the theatre on whose steps she was found, and undertook to fund the child’s living expenses and education. Later the club decided to raise funds for other disadvantaged children. The discovery of the baby inspired the film Variety Girl (1947).
Tumblr media
In 1986, Ball served as Hostess for the “All-Star Party for Clint Eastwood.”
THE ALL-STAR PARTY
Previous “All-Star Party” honoree 1981 Burt Reynolds introduces the show. After the first commercial break, Lucille Ball is introduced. She kisses Carol and walks to the stairs to speak. While she does, Carol bows to her as 'the Queen of Comedy.'
Lucy says they are there to honor three women:
Carol Burnett, the singer
Carol Burnett, the legitimate actress, and
Carol Burnett, the comedienne
Lucy: “Good for you, kid.  You've done it all, and you've done it well.”
Carol Burnett would often remark how Lucy affectionately called her 'kid'.  Lucy reads a letter from the White House signed by Ronald Reagan. Reagan would be the guest of honor in 1983. He would also send notes of congratulations and regrets in 1984 (for Lucille Ball) and 1986 (for Clint Eastwood). The latter two notes were read by Cary Grant.
Lucy introduces Sammy Davis Jr.  Sammy wanted to sing, but defers to Steve Lawrence, who sings Cole Porter's “You're The Top” with special lyrics for the occasion by Sammy Cahn.
Tumblr media
Jim Nabors wheels on a large projection TV and Tom Selleck (in a Hawaiian shirt, naturally) appears on it to pay tribute to Burnett.  His seductive tone causes Carol to cuddle up to the TV set.
Tumblr media
Nabors brings on Bette Davis if, for no other reason, to introduce Jimmy Stewart. Davis and Stewart had just done a picture together, the TV film Right of Way, released in 1983. It was Stewart's penultimate screen acting role. Surprisingly, Davis says that Stewart will sing!
Jimmy Stewart, not known as a singer, croons Cole Porter's “Easy to Love,” the evening's second song from the 1934 stage musical Anything Goes. The song was also included in the 1936 film Born To Dance starring Stewart and Eleanor Powell (whose voice was dubbed). Stewart manages to get through the first chorus (although sadly out of key).  For the second chorus he asks that the lights be dimmed so it is just him singing to Burnett.  It is a truly intimate and lovely moment considering that the only time the two ever saw each other was on award, talk, or tribute shows. Burnett and Stewart never appeared together in a dramatic context.
Tumblr media
After a break, Tim Conway does an elaborate comedy bit with a bank of telephones designed for viewers to call in to pay tribute to Carol. Despite the large number of phones (and corresponding lights) – no one calls. Conway reads Carol a telegram from Garry Moore.
Jack Paar talks about their early days on “The Tonight Show” and recalls Burnett singing “I Was A Fool For John Foster Dulles” by Kenny Welsh in August 1958. Paar introduces Vicki Lawrence to re-create the song.
Tumblr media
John Foster Dulles served as United States Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959. He was a significant figure in the early Cold War era, advocating an aggressive stance against communism throughout the world.
Glenda Jackson steps out to unveil a photograph of the UCLA Medical Center where a wing will be renamed the Carol Burnett Wing for Handicapped Children.
Carol expresses her thanks to everyone. She tells how she and her grandmother used to go to the movies to see many of the folks in the room: Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball, Fred Astaire, and Bette Davis.
Carol is coaxed into singing her theme song “I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together.”  Another voice joins in from behind her – it is her old friend opera singer Beverly Sills. The song continues, with special lyrics for the occasion (likely written by Sammy Cahn).
This Date in Lucy History – December 12
Tumblr media
“Ricky's European Booking” (ILL S5;E10) – December 12, 1955
