El músico conversó con Rockaxis sobre “Melodies on Hiatus”, su nuevo álbum y la inesperada colaboración con Matt Helders de Arctic Monkeys. «Me encanta como toca la batería, siempre estuvo la idea de que tocara en un disco o alguna canción», detalla.

Una anomalía en la música popular es la historia de Albert Hammond Jr., no solo por haber sido un elemento clave en la construcción del sonido de The Strokes –la banda que redefinió el sonido de las guitarras a principios de siglo–, sino porque pudo crear su camino y jamás vivir bajo la sombra de su papá, el mítico cantante con el que comparte nombre. A sus 43 años parece estar mejor que nunca: su banda madre atraviesa un gran momento de estabilidad, incluso se quedaron con un Grammy por su disco “The New Abnormal” (2020), sus problemas con las drogas son cosa del pasado y este 2023 publicó “Melodies on Hiatus”, un ambicioso álbum solista de 19 canciones en el que deja en claro que lo suyo son las melodías pop. Para esta entrevista no apareció en cámara, solo su voz y una foto de él sonriendo y sosteniendo a su hija dan a entender que es el guitarrista de The Strokes quien está hablando. Entre pregunta y pregunta, va dando cuenta de que está pasando un periodo tranquilo en su vida, incluso se anima a decir chistes sobre las consultas clásicas que aparecen en las ruedas de prensa. «Oh, ustedes (los periodistas) son tan obvios», dice riendo después de dos insistentes consultas sobre una anécdota de sus noches junto al baterista de Arctic Monkeys. Pero para el guitarrista esto funciona igual que en el fútbol: lo que pasa en el camarín, se queda en el camarín.

El mundo del histriónico músico siempre ha estado lleno de colores claros y ropa ochentera, pero es recién ahora que explora todo ese universo en su música. Desde colaboraciones con raperos como GoldLink, hasta sintetizadores con sonidos espaciales aparecen en su nueva colección de canciones. El álbum también funciona como una antítesis a “Francis Trouble” (2018), el que fue inspirado en su fallecido hermano que no alcanzó a nacer. Cuenta que está en una intensa fase creativa, que incluso tuvo que forzarse a parar de hacer melodías para enfocarse en lo que ya tenía. Pensó en algún momento la posibilidad de hacer un álbum doble por todo el material que acumuló. «El plan nunca fue “vamos a hacer 20 canciones”, solo empecé a grabar y fue muy divertido. La verdad quería seguir. Después sentí esa necesidad de soltar esta colección de canciones, eso es algo que te permite empezar desde nuevos lugares cuando lo haces otra vez», detalla. ¿Su gran complicación en este proceso? Las letras. En reiteradas entrevistas ha confesado que es algo que le cuesta bastante, así que en esa búsqueda de ayuda llegó a la canadiense Simon Wilcox, quien firma como coautora en canciones de Selena Gómez, Nick Jonas y Carly Rae Jepsen. Por las restricciones sanitarias tuvieron que trabajar a distancia, sus mejores aliados fueron las llamadas telefónicas y después de un año de trabajo pudieron verse cara a cara. “Melodies on Hiatus” no es un álbum sobre cómo Albert vivió en su casa el periodo del COVID-19, ni reflexiones sobre el encierro. «La única cosa que tiene que ver con la pandemia es que se retrasó el lanzamiento, se supone que debió salir en 2021», le comentó a Stereogum. Para él todo esto se trata sobre melodías, sonidos y capturar la atención, en su visión las letras y la voz son un instrumento más. Según él, la música y la composición se trata de ir navegando. «Es más como jugar un videojuego, uno de esos con historias, como Zelda. A veces parte todo desde un chiste tonto, pero las cosas tontas también son serias, más que pensar en algo que no he hecho, algo que no he escuchado, o en lo que soy bueno, a la hora de crear todo es sobre dejarte llevar», afirma.

Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde “Francis Trouble”, el último álbum solista que publicaste. ¿Cómo ha ido la vida en este tiempo?

Bien. Siento que es menos tiempo, porque no cuento esos dos años de la pandemia en los que todo se atascó. Pero todo va bien.

Creo que con este álbum no estás mirando hacia atrás, ni te atascaste con nostalgia en alguna época, algo que se está viendo harto en los artistas que aparecieron al inicio de los 2000. ¿Qué cosas te inspiran a estar mirando hacia el futuro?

Aprecio lo que dices, pero no lo sé. Solo hago lo que siento, trato de no hacer algo que no se sienta normal para mí. Es difícil responder esto. Me encanta crear cosas, partes o melodías que busquen sentimientos, que los fans los disfruten. Trato de estar constantemente desarrollándome, aprendiendo cosas, buscando ideas, deconstruyendo canciones, hacer temas en los que no existan guitarras y ver qué pasa con eso. No lo sé. Me gustaría tener una respuesta, pero a veces las cosas no necesitan una (ríe).

¿Cómo funciona ese proceso creativo? ¿Tienes un momento del día en el que tomas la guitarra o solo esperas la inspiración?

En mi rutina, trabajo más practicando con la guitarra, eso me lleva a grabaciones randoms, ideas en piano y guitarra. Hay días en los que trabajo en base a todo eso que voy juntando, hay lugares a los que quiero volver, trato de recortar esas partes y ver qué se puede hacer. A veces estás con la idea de hacer una nueva canción, otras con volver a esas grabaciones y la motivación va cambiando. Mi forma es crear canciones de verso-coro, verso-coro, en ocasiones solo tengo una de esas partes, o variaciones de ellas, así voy agregando transiciones y viendo cómo pueden mutar. Puede que la melodía necesite un cambio, a veces tengo un riff muy bueno pero el coro es malo. Pero si lo vemos como una historia, lo que trato de hacer es que la gente se mueva, que pase por ciertas fases, ir llevándola con tensión, ir soltando a ratos. Todo esto suena aburrido, pero no es algo tan blanco o negro, pero bueno, tú haces preguntas, trata de resolver lo que digo (ríe).

Este álbum tiene algunas colaboraciones, una de ellas es con Matt Helders en la batería, ¿Cómo llegaron a trabajar juntos y cómo lo vivieron?

Fue cool. Siempre encuentro rara esta pregunta porque conozco a Matt, no es como que nos conocimos para hacer esto. Hemos compartido de otras formas, desde hace años que hemos hablado, le he comentado que me encanta como toca la batería, siempre estuvo la idea de que tocara en un disco o alguna canción.

¿Alguna historia que hayas vivido con él?

Oh, ustedes (los periodistas) son tan predecibles (ríe). No hemos hecho nada que no sea parte de la vida, no hay ninguna historia loca o algo así. Todavía no nos hemos lanzado desde el escenario en un concierto de los Guns ‘N Roses (ríe). Creo que no hay nada que sea muy excitante o gracioso que contar.

Dentro de todas estas canciones, ¿tienes alguna que sea tu favorita o que te tenga más orgulloso?

Es mi álbum favorito de los que he hecho. Tengo muchas canciones favoritas, cuando la gente pregunta sobre lo preferido, incluso en otras cosas, digo que no me gusta tener algo favorito, prefiero las variaciones. Eso te limita, limita las emociones, como conectar sónicamente con las cosas, pero eso también cambia. Luego quieres escuchar otra cosa, sentir algo de otra manera.

Qué pasará ahora con este álbum? ¿Te veremos en Sudamérica? ¿Tal vez en Lollapalooza?

Lo deseo. Me gustaría girarlo. Este es mi cuarto álbum, hice un EP también, pero no puedo verme haciéndolo. Tuve un power trio para ver si podíamos girar, pero honestamente se siente tonto hacerlo si no es sostenible hacerlo, siempre he intentado poner dinero y ver si funciona, pero ya en esta etapa no está funcionado. Así que, desafortunadamente, creo que no iré para allá.

Bog's blog 41

Bog’s Blog    On est reparti pour un tour. Cette semaine a suivi son cours comme une autre l’aurait fait avant elle. Il y a quand même eu quelques évènements notables qui sont sortis de notre routine habituelle.  

J’ai profité de la bonne météo de ce début de semaine pour travailler sur les “home improvements” extérieur.   Notre système d’eau grise est officiellement fonctionnel avec des améliorations potentielles qui peuvent encore y être apportée à l’avenir. On espère que les plantes filtrantes y trouvent leur compte et enfoncent leurs racines profondément dans la scorie. J’ai également installé des pavés pour pouvoir se déplacer jusqu’au composte sans trop se mouiller dans les hautes herbes et également devant l’escalier principal de la maison. Pour ce qui est de l’intérieur, on a fini la cage moustiquaire autour de notre lit samedi. Elle requière également quelques finitions mais dans l’ensemble elle est fonctionnelle. On a très bien dormi dedans. Lundi au réveil on a découvert qu’il y avait 3 moustiques à l’intérieur qui n’avaient pas eu l’opportunité de nous embêter. En plus ce n’était pas très bon pour mon Karma de perpétrer de génocide de moustique tous les soirs et souvent, au plein milieu de la nuit.   J’ai aussi fait des trous dans le contreplaqué derrière le frigo pour que celui-ci puisse un peu respirer. On a des problèmes de bruits qu’on associe à une surchauffe. Je pense qu’on a passé un point de non-retour et qu’il va nous rappeler sa présence pour toujours. Il y a également la possibilité qu’il ait toujours été bruyant mais qu’on y payait moins attention. Il a tendance à obséder mes pensées le matin pendant ma méditation. Maintenant que je sais que j’ai agi pour régler la situation ça va soulager ma conscience.   Ma liste de chose à faire a donc bien diminué ces derniers jours et heureusement étant donné que cette longue période de liberté (presque 2 ans) arrive à sa conclusion. En effet, la semaine prochaine, je suis censé recommencer à contribuer à la société. Je vais m’habiller correctement, interagir avec des inconnus, participer à l’effort économique de mon ménage et payer des taxes à mon pays adoptif. Ce changement de dynamique est le bienvenu. D’une certaine manière j’aimerai bien me resynchroniser avec le reste du groupe.   Je n’ai pas encore reçu mon horaire pour mon travail dans les élections mais ça devrait être plutôt chill. C’est censé durer environ un mois puis je commence chez les Wilcox début novembre. Je suis allé voir Blair Wilcox (mon frère d’accueil) sur le terrain vendredi aprem pour qu’il me donne un peu les ficelles du métier. Pour me préparer à l’entretient, j’ai nagé 1h15 afin d’être dans les meilleurs dispositions mental possible et me montrer sous mon meilleur jour (de façon naturel). C'était chouette de le revoir après tant d’années. Il a l’air d’aller vraiment bien. Ça se ressent qu’il a une bonne énergie. Il a un enfant et un deuxième en chemin.  

Je compte me déplacer en vélo électrique jusqu’au travail donc j’ai fait pas mal de recherches récemment et je pense avoir trouver ce qu’il me faut une batterie de 625KWh, assistance jusqu’à 45km/h pour 1800 euro. Le vélo a une chouette esthétique. C’est une marque Néo-Zélandaise. Je vais aller au magasin demain pour poser quelques questions.   

Après ma visite chez Wilcox, je suis retourné au boulot de Kate pour boire un verre (ce qui est commun le vendredi aprem) avec ses collègues et Cathy. Cathy était là parce qu’elle avait besoin d’un peu de compagnie après une longue semaine. La bière a bien tapé à jeun après une heure de natation. On est allé faire une dégustation de Gin dans la foulée au “liquor shop” du coin. Je n’avais pas intégré le fait que tester un gin impliquait l'écoute d’une pléthore d’explication inutilement compliqué d’œnologue en herbe/fleur. Kate et Cathy ont assuré les interactions et je me contentais d’acquiescer et sourire docilement. Kate avait l’intention d’acheter une bouteille pour mettre en réserve pour les occasions ce qu’elle a fait.  

Le soir on avait des invités particuliers à la maison. On a reçu trois vétérinaires belges de notre âge qui étaient arrivé quelques jours plus tôt. Robin Delrez, le frère de Natasha (la copine de Vinz), m’a demandé si je pouvais m’occuper un peu de ses amis/collègues. On les a donc conviés à la maison pour un curry. Ils étaient très sympas. Ils ont un working holiday visa mais compte ne rester que 3 mois bizarrement. Il y en a un qui a une promesse d’emploi et qui doit rentrer. Une autre qui a une offre et la dernière qui n’a rien de prévu et qui se voit bien rester plus longtemps. Mais bon, c’est le début de leur voyage et je ne voulais pas trop les embêter avec le fait de penser à la fin. Ils ont tous les trois un boulot rémunéré à 1H30 vers le sud dans une ferme qui commence le mois prochain. On les recroisera peut-être à l’avenir.  

Dimanche, Jamie est rentré une semaine plus tôt que prévu pour l’anniversaire de Mark. Je pense que sa famille et sa copine lui manquait de trop. Un anniversaire représente à la fois la cause du manque et l’opportunité de rentrer en grande pompe. On a fait des pâtes fraiches au pesto et des pisco en apéro. Les grands-parents étaient bien entendu de la partie. C’était chouette d’avoir les différentes histoires du voyageur. On compte l’inviter avec Bea (sa copine) à la tiny house dans la semaine et peut être aller grimper ensemble. Ils comptent aller skier deux semaines début octobre.  

Je pense que ce sera Kate qui vous écrira la semaine prochaine. Ce sera rafraichissant d’avoir un peu son point de vue. Passez une bonne semaine, bisous.

NOTRE DAME BENEFITS FROM SOME KEY BAD CALLS TO ESCAPE CAL

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – The announcers repeatedly referred to it as “the luck of the Irish”, but let’s call it what it was - horrible officiating that may have cost the California Bears a huge upset win over Notre Dame in South Bend.

The Irish, who started the season ranked No. 5, watched the Bears jump out to leads repeatedly, but kept benefitting from momentous calls that went their way.   Their coach couldn’t really praise their performance on its own merits, but was just glad to escape with the win.

"They found a way to finish," First-year coach Marcus Freeman said. "I'm proud of those guys. You know what, it is hard to win football games. It's hard. You've seen it. It’s hard.”  Not much of a vote of confidence in the team’s actual performance.

The biggest officiating controversy of the game came early in the second quarter.  Cal was ahead 7-0 (would have been ahead 10-0 but the previous field goal attempt bounced off the upright) and had done a dominant job on defense, stopping Notre Dame’s first decent drive of the game.  The Irish had to set up for a difficult field goal shot from 46 yards and their kicker missed the attempt.  This would’ve given Cal the ball back with fantastic field position and their continued momentum would probably have led to another score.  But instead, a late flag came out (after the missed attempt, it should be noted) amazingly for offsides against Cal BEFORE the snap - meaning a Bears player supposedly lined up offsides.  And the number of the player called was not even on the field.

Dan Zaksheske from Outkick weighed in on the controversy: “Cal was not offsides. They were not even close to being offsides. While missed judgment calls are part of sports, this was baffling. It wasn’t like someone jumped and then jumped back and it was close. Cal lined up perfectly legally. No one moved. Yet a very late flag was thrown. It was a brutal call that left Cal fans wondering “what might have been.” This probably won’t make them feel any better — and arguably they’ll feel worse — but the ACC has apologized for the mistake, according to ESPN. And, they’ve suspended the official who made the call.”

Of course they didn’t.  Acknowledging the error public would be admitting they probably cost Cal the game.  Why?  Because the missed field goal and loss of possession became a 1st and 10 with great field position for the Irish, all thanks to the fraudulent call.  And on the subsequent play, Notre Dame scored a touchdown.  So a 7-0 Cal lead that could have potentially turned into a 14 point lead (Cal scored another touchdown on their next possession) the score was tied 7-7.  And that 7 points was what won the game for the Irish.

The Golden Bears scored on the ensuing possession and took back the lead, but another inexplicable penalty was called against Cal receiver J Michael Sturdivant after he caught the touchdown in the end zone.  He stood up and put his hands up towards the sky in celebration.  Amazingly, that minor show of excitement (and much less than the overwhelming majority of college players do when they score) drew an unsportsmanlike penalty for “excessive celebration”.  Bears coach Justin Wilcox was beside himself.  And it gave the Irish an additional 15 yards on the ensuing kickoff.  They would go on to score a field goal, which arguably they would not have reached without those extra yards.

"It's gut-wrenching. We had chances to win. Too many errors. One or two more plays," Wilcox said, being careful not to mention the bad calls and officiating.

Cal was playing so well against the vaunted Irish that the South Bend fans were booing their own when the Bears retook the lead in the second quarter.  Loud cheers of "California!" could clearly be heard, as Cal’s defense made stop after stop.  Notre Dame was able to finally get some momentum going in the second half, finally pulling ahead for the lead in the 4th quarter.

But despite the “luck of the Irish” going against them, the Golden Bears did not quit.  In fact, the game wasn’t over until the very last play.  On fourth-and-13 from the Notre Dame 35, Cal's Jack Plummer threw the ball into the end zone. The ball bounced off several players and Bears receiver Jeremiah Hunter nearly pulled it in, but the ball fell from his grasp.

It was a familiar feeling for the Bears, who had five losses by seven points or less last season.

Notre Dame starting tailback Chris Tyree said the entire game was excrutiating to watch when he was on the sidelines.

"They almost gave me a heart attack out there, man," he said. "It's really exciting football to watch, especially when it goes down to the wire like that.”

Plummer said the Bears were planning to go for two instead of an extra point if they had scored.  “We just wanted to get the win and get out of there” rather than going to overtime, he said.  Unfortunately, it was not to be.  Instead of a 3-0 start and a huge upset win over mighty Notre Dame, they had to go home and watch Sports Center say how the game had been stolen from them, and settle for the ACC giving them a non-apology for a blown call, while suspending the ref that committed it.

L'Appel de Cthulhu de H. P. Lovecraft

“ Je prie seulement, au cas où je ne survive pas à ce manuscrit, que mes exécuteurs fassent passer la prudence avant le risque, et s'efforcent qu'il ne tombe sous aucun œil. ” 

La difficulté en abordant les récits de Lovecraft est de savoir par où commencer tant ses œuvres sont nombreuses et complexes, la plus emblématique doit pourtant être L'Appel de Cthulhu publié en février 1928 dans le magasine Weird Tales.

La nouvelle s'implante dans un cycle intitulé le Mythe de Cthulhu, composé de six histoires : Dagon (1917), L'Appel de Cthulhu (1926), l'Affaire Charles Dexter Ward (1927), l'Abomination de Dunwich (1928), les Montagnes hallucinées (1931), Dans l'abîme du temps (1936) et le Cauchemar d'Innsmouth (1936).

Résumé détaillé

L'intrigue non linéaire nous amène à découvrir l'enquête du défunt professeur en langues sémites George Gammell Angell dont les documents ont étés confiés à son petit-neveu, narrateur du récit, essayant de découvrir ce sur quoi enquêtait son oncle avant son décès soudain.

Parmi les documents recueillis par Francis Wayland Thruston, le petit-neveu s'avérant aussi être anthropologue, se trouve un manuscrit portant le titre Le Culte de Cthulhu, des coupures de presse et une statuette représentant une sorte de chimère entre dragon, humain et poulpe.

Le manuscrit débute avec la rencontre du sculpteur de la statuette, Henry Wilcox, un jeune artiste disant avoir réalisé la statuette suite à un rêve angoissant. Ce rêve étrange représentait une cité perdue, recouverte de vase, à l'architecture invraisemblable et obscure. D'abord sceptique, Angell va devenir de plus en plus sensible au discours du sculpteur, pensant que le rêve et la sculpture pourraient avoir un lien avec un ancien culte païen. Ils vont se rencontrer à plusieurs reprises jusqu'à ce que Wilcox soit prit d'une crise de délire, entendant les pas d'une créature gigantesque.

Dans la seconde partie du manuscrit, un inspecteur de police, John Legrasse, entre en contact avec Angell au sujet d'une statuette réalisée dans un matériau inconnu, trouvée lors d'un assaut contre une secte vaudou se livrant à des sacrifices humains. Les suspects incarcérés, l'un d'eux confessera que la secte vénère les "Grands Anciens", dieux venus des étoiles venus il y a des milliers d'années et dormant désormais sous la terre et la mer. Ce culte aurait la capacité de se répandre à travers le monde, comme en témoigne le Necronomicon, grimoire ancien écrit par Abdul Alhazred.

Thurston, en découvrant l'existence de la secte, s'interroge sur la possibilité que son oncle ait pu être assassiné par un membre du culte en raison de son enquête.

La troisième et dernière partie du récit explique comment Thurston découvre un article de journal australien relatant un accident en mer ayant causé la mort étrange de tout un équipage, à l'exception d'un rescapé. Thurston voyage jusque Oslo où il découvre le journal du survivant. Gustaf Johansen, un marin norvégien, explique que son navire, l'Emma, alors dans l'Océan Pacifique, croise la route d'un yacht avec à bord des individus agités donnant l'ordre à l'Emma de faire demi-tour. Après avoir refusé, une bataille s'ensuit et l'équipage survit. Curieux de découvrir la raison pour laquelle le yacht insistait pour qu'ils partent, l'équipage poursuit son chemin.

L'équipage découvrir une île étonnante sur laquelle se trouve une étrange cité, l'équipage ouvre une porte et sans le savoir, libère un des Grands Anciens, Cthulhu. En le voyant, deux des hommes meurent de peur, trois autres meurent sous ses griffes. Johansen parvient à se sauver avec un autre membre de son équipage, qui mourra par la suite sur le bateau.

Johansen, avant de mourir, confit son journal à son épouse qui le donnera ultérieurement à Thurston. Ce dernier comprend que, tout comme son oncle, Johansen s'est probablement fait tuer. Il réalise également qu'il est lui-même en danger.

Avis

Considéré comme un classique de la littérature d'horreur et de ce qui sera qualifié par la suite de science-fiction, L'Appel de Cthulhu est une œuvre à part, frappante par son aspect sérieux et crédible, deux éléments importants dans l'écriture de Lovecraft. Appliquant une écriture journalistique sur des éléments mystérieux et obscures. Cthulhu, créature gigantesque et terrifiante, cruelle aussi, n'a absolument rien qui l'approche de l'Homme, donnant ainsi une sensation de fin du monde à la fin du récit, où le lecteur comprend que la libération du dieu ne peut que signifier la fin de la race humaine.

Toutefois, il est important de noter que les récits de Lovecraft reflètent aussi la mentalité d'une époque (il dit pas mal de trucs racistes/misogynes quand même), c'est pourquoi, même si je reconnais les qualités littéraires et horrifiques de ses récits, je peux difficilement dire qu'il s'agit d'un livre à lire absolument.

Édité très régulièrement dans diverses maisons d'éditions françaises, je me suis dirigée chez les Éditions Points pour cet achat. Publié en 2020 pour un prix de 7,10€, le petit ouvrage aux belles dorures en couverture présente une apparence rappelant les affiches d'anciens films de science-fiction.
