Mae had just begun putting herself back together right when Ron Weasley knocked her down again.
It hurt even more that she no longer had him as a best friend to turn to. She still had Ginny, Luna, and even Harry and Hermione, but she distanced herself as Ron and Lavender were present nearly all the time. They just couldn’t seem to get enough of each other.
A week had passed since Mae had seen Ron with Lavender, and Draco was finally back to classes after his stay in the hospital wing. He had surprised Mae by being cordial with her, even with Pansy at his side. Mae wasn’t quite sure what to make of it.
“Mae!”
Mae turned, her dark hair swishing behind her, to see Ginny hurrying towards her with a grin on her face.
“Yeah, Gin?” questioned Mae, falling into step next to the beautiful redhead.
“We’re having a party tonight, after the Quidditch game. Will you come?”
Mae paused, if only for a moment. Did she really want to spend her evening watching Ron and Lavender snog each other?
“Please? Luna will be disappointed if you don’t show.”
“Luna’s coming?” Mae avoided answering, bringing attention to Ginny’s girlfriend.
“‘Course she is! She’s even wearing her lion hat to the match,” Ginny shook her head good naturedly. “She said she’d rather support her girlfriend than her housemates.”
“Alright, fine,” conceded Mae, stopping at the Great Hall. “I’ll see you tonight.”
“You’re coming to the party?”
Mae and Ginny turned to see Ron standing half in and half out of the entrance, his arm wrapped in Lavender’s grasp. Mae raised an eyebrow at the sight, watching as the blonde nuzzled her head into Ron’s shoulder.
“Yes, Won Won. Have you got a problem with it?” Mae deadpanned, crossing her arms. Ginny stifled a laugh next to her, patting Mae on the shoulder before walking off, presumably heading to the Quidditch field.
Ron’s eyes narrowed. “No, but if you’ll have that attitude, perhaps you shouldn’t.”
“Shut it, Ron!” Ginny called over her shoulder before turning down the hallway.
“Let’s get to our seat,” Lavender tugged on Ron’s arm, giving a small wave to Mae. “Your hair looks pretty tied up like that.”
“Thanks, Lavender.” Mae responded, giving the girl a weak smile. It wasn’t her fault Ron was a git.
Ron was pulled away by Lavender, and Mae waited a moment before following them in. She sat at the Slytherin table, next to Blaise Zabini. He gave her a curt nod, mixing his sugar in his morning coffee. Draco and Pansy sat across the table from her, and she found it didn’t hurt as much anymore. She and Draco had closure, now. Mae hoped he would do better with Pansy.
“Are you cheering for your little Gryffindor, today?” asked Blaise, taking a sip of his coffee. Mae rolled her eyes, harshly stabbing her french toast.
“Ginny? Yes, of course I’m cheering for her.” Mae replied all too cheerily, knowing he didn’t mean her.
“Potter won’t be playing today,” said Draco, his tone more angsty than usual. “He’s serving detention with Snape.”
“Rightfully so, he nearly killed you.” Pansy scoffed, biting into her english muffin.
“He was just doing the Dark Lord a favor,” Blaise replied jokingly, cutting into his pancake.
Draco clenched his fork tightly in his hand. “Shut it, Zabini.”
Mae’s mouth had gone dry, and she faltered as she picked up her pumpkin juice. “The Dark Lord?”
“Don’t worry about it.” Draco muttered, pushing himself away from the table. He left without a backwards glance, leaving all three of them in the dust.
“Blaise, what did you mean?” questioned Mae, her concern for Draco growing.
“It was just a joke,” assured Blaise, shaking his head. “Apparently Draco left his ability to take one elsewhere.”
“Okay,” responded Mae, not thoroughly convinced. She pushed it out of her mind, however. Draco was no longer her concern.
The three ate their breakfast in silence, with the occasional comment about the Quidditch match of the day. They would all be attending, although Slytherin wasn’t playing. It was better than doing nothing, according to Pansy.
Mae had found that Pansy wasn’t so bad, if she could get past the fact that she had known she was Draco’s girlfriend the entire time she was sleeping with him. Although some days were harder than others, she found it tolerable to be around the girl.
Mae split up with the two after breakfast, making her way over to Luna who was indeed wearing her spectacular lion hat.
“Hello, Mae!” Luna greeted, giving the dark haired girl an engulfing hug. “Ginny told me you would be attending the party today!”
“Only for you, Luna,” Mae smiled at the girl, who gave her a wide grin in return.
Together, the two headed out to the Quidditch match, sunshine streaming from the sky. They sat in the middle of the stands, which quickly filled up as the game was about to begin.
“Whatever happened between you and Ronald?” Luna asked rather innocently, rearranging her lion head.
“Well,” Mae paused for a moment, before continuing. “He saw me with Draco in the hospital wing, after he was injured. He unfortunately assumed that I was back together with him.”
Luna nodded slowly, the great lion head nearly slipping off her scalp. “Did you tell him differently, then?”
“No,” considered Mae, biting her lip. “I didn’t. I assumed he, y’know, liked Lavender and not me. Obviously, with the way the two of them snog constantly.”
“Love,” Luna said softly, placing a hand on her arm. “You know Ronald is a bit unregistered. I suspect nargles, to be honest with you. How is he to know how you feel if you never told him?”
“Well, it isn’t like he ever asked me,” defended Mae. “He never once said he liked me. He probably just thought I was a friend, the whole time. Just like Hermione or Harry. He probably liked Lavender the entire time.”
“Did he ever say anything about Lavender?”
“No, but-”
“Did he ever even mention Lavender?”
“Well, not exactly-”
“So what makes you think he likes her?”
“Because he chose her over me!” Mae exploded, wincing when several people turned around to look at her. “He made it clear that she is what he wanted.”
“Or maybe, he got hurt when he saw you kissing my cousin.” Luna raised her eyebrows, giving Mae an unusually sharp look.
“Ginny told you?”
“Yes,” Luna nodded, turning her attention back to the game which had just started. “And if Ginny and I were getting close, and I saw her kissing Harry, I wouldn’t think she wanted me. I would move onto someone else so I didn’t get hurt.”
Mae was quiet at that, mulling the situation over in her head. Of course, what Luna said made sense. It usually did, and perhaps that was part of why Mae had been avoiding talking to Luna about the situation. Her pride and her heart refused to let her look at the big picture, instead just feeling the hurt and betrayal. Really, how was Ron to know if she never told him?
The game was spectacular, and Gryffindor ended up winning with four hundred and fifty to one hundred and forty. Luna and Mae cheered loudly as the score was announced, and Luna tugged on her lion hat causing a string of red and gold fireworks to shoot out of it, while a loud roar bellowed from its lips.
The two of them raced down to the grounds, eager to congratulate their friends. Mae felt a tug in her chest as Ron gave her a wide grin, sweaty and rife with excitement.
“You did so well, Ron!” complimented Mae, giving him a wide smile.
Ron responded by giving her a big hug, lifting her off the ground. Mae held back tightly, relishing the feeling of his strong arms wrapped around her. She never wanted to leave his arms.
“Won Won!”
Lavender’s voice broke the two out of their embrace, and Ron slowly set Mae back down on the ground, his arms hesitantly releasing her. Lavender rushed into his arms, Mae narrowly stepping out of her way.
The blonde began attacking Ron’s face with kisses, to the point where Madam Hooch had to come over and reprimand the two for PDA. Mae felt her heart break more and more, each time Ron and Lavender’s lips collided.
She turned her attention fully onto Ginny, who had an arm wrapped around Luna, who was praising Ginny for her amazing broom work.
“Great job, Gin!” the words came out far too cheerily, and Ginny gave her a sympathetic smile.
“Thank you. Even if Harry wasn’t able to play, we still did it.” Ginny’s eyes flickered over to Ron and Lavender, before miming shoving a finger down her throat in disgust.
Mae laughed, shaking her head.
Eventually, everyone headed back up to the Gryffindor common room where the party began in full swing. Firewhiskey was pulled from Dean and Seamus’ secret stash, butterbeer was passed around, and treats were already there courtesy of the House Elves. Dobby, Harry Potter’s closest elf, had made sure they were stocked with everything they may have needed.
Ginny, Luna, and Mae sat near the fire, and were soon joined by Ron, Lavender, Hermione, and eventually Harry, who was worn out from his detention with Snape. His mood changed, however, once he was told Gryffindor had won the match. They began drinking, and were soon joined by Dean and Seamus.
Mae noticed Harry and Hermione were sitting rather close, and Hermione kept blushing anytime his arm or hand grazed her. It made her smile, at the thought of the two together. They would make a good match, certainly.
Ginny sat between Luna’s legs, her head resting on the blonde’s chest as Luna’s nimble fingers wound through Ginny’s hair. Every so often, Ginny would turn her head and press kisses to Luna’s arm. She kept her arm wound around Luna’s thigh, tracing circles on her exposed skin.
Dean was sprawled out over Seamus’ chest, laughing loudly at the conversation they were all having. They had their hands intertwined, sharing the same armchair. It looked to be a bit of a tight fit, but the two boys certainly didn’t mind.
Ron had Lavender seated on his lap, his head resting on her shoulder and a hand on her hip. The beautiful girl kept pressing kisses to his cheek, or his neck, or his lips, ignoring the way he seemed to be uncomfortable with the amount of PDA she was putting out.
It absolutely hurt Mae to be surrounded by so many couples, including one with the boy she was in love with. As much as she wished it weren’t true, she had fallen in love with Ron Weasley. To her, it felt as though she had transferred the love and devotion she reserved for Draco onto Ron. She supposed it may not be healthy, but she couldn’t help what she felt. And that was what hurt the most.
Somewhere along the line, Ginny proposed they play truth or dare. It wasn’t the most innocent game, but it was all going smoothly until they were all so drunk they may as well have taken Veritaserum.
“Ron,” Ginny’s eyes had taken on an evil look, and she narrowed them as she stared at her brother. “I dare you to kiss the prettiest girl in the room.”
At this point, Lavender had fallen asleep next to Ron on the loveseat. Ron, after hearing the question, swallowed hard and turned to Mae.
Mae’s breath caught in her throat, and she stared at Ron as he walked over to her. He cupped her cheek with his large hand and leaned down to her face.
“Don’t,” Mae whispered, shutting her eyes.
But he did. Ron pressed his lovely lips against Mae’s, slipping his arms around her neck. Tears slipped from her eyes, and she roughly pushed him away. How dare he play with her feelings like that.
“You aren’t going to do this to me, Ronald,” cried Mae, stumbling towards the portrait hole. “You don’t get to play with my feelings like this.”
She stumbled drunkenly through the halls, trying her best to be as quiet as she could. The last thing she wanted was for a teacher to find her, blasted at four in the afternoon on Saturday. That wouldn’t bode well for her at all.
“Mae, wait!”
She stumbled, catching herself at the last second, turning to see Ron hurrying towards her. His eyes had lost the drunken glaze they had taken on in the Common Room, and his movements were much more fluid than her own.
“What could you possibly want, Ronald?” spit out Mae, uncaring that her voice was perhaps a little too loud in the otherwise quiet hallway.
“Can we talk?” Ron paused, his eyes flickering towards the wall. “In there. Please.”
“Where the bloody hell did that even come from?” questioned Mae, bewildered that the door had appeared out of seemingly nowhere.
“It’s the room of requirement,” explained Ron, opening the door. “Let's get in here, before a teacher catches you plastered off your arse.”
Mae rolled her eyes, but followed Ron inside. There was a plush looking couch, and a table with a pitcher of a pale yellow liquid, with two cups beside it. It reminded her of lemonade, and she suddenly felt parched.
Mae poured herself a glass, ignoring Ron’s protests. As she drank the liquid, her mind cleared of the foggy drunken haze it had been in.
“That’s disappointing,” grumbled Mae, setting the empty cup back down. “It sobers you up.”
“This room never fails at its purpose.” a grin slipped onto Ron’s face, and it hurt Mae at how handsome he looked.
Ron also took a glass of the liquid, downing it in one go. Mae watched, intrigued, as his Adams apple bobbed up and down with his gulps.
“Ron, I-”
“Mae, look-”
The two blushed as they both spoke at the same time, and uneasy laughter coming between them. Ron gestured towards the couch, and they both sat down; Mae criss crossed on the edge, Ron sitting next to her with one leg on and one leg off, facing her.
“Mae, I never fancied Lavender,” Ron confessed, his ears red as he spoke, his voice shaky. “I only started snogging her because I saw you and Draco. I figured you’d gone back to him.”
Mae shook her head, brushing her hair out of her face. “Ron, Draco broke my heart. I would be foolish to go back to him. I kissed him, after he was injured, for closure. Perhaps that doesn’t make much sense, but it is what it is.”
“That’s why I was so mad you know,” he responded quietly, averting his eyes. “He nearly destroyed you, he treated you awful, and then just when I thought.. You might fancy me.. You kissed him.”
A new burn of tears were behind Mae’s eyes. She laughed weakly, although there wasn’t much funny about the situation. “Ron, I did -do- fancy you. Quite a lot, actually. But I figured Lavender-”
“Lavender was nothing to me,” Ron interjected, his eyes finding her. “You are what I wanted. It just never made sense for you to want me back.”
“How could it not make sense?” Mae laughed again, swiping away tears that had slipped down her cheeks. “Ron, you’re.. Wonderful. You’re funny, you’re kind, you’re unbelievably handsome-”
“Rubbish-” interrupted Ron once more, his ears now red, pink staining his cheeks. “That’s rubbish. I’m not nearly enough for you.”
“You are,” Mae responded sharply, taking his hand in hers. “You are what I want. You’re what I need.”
Ron met her eyes again, and leaned forward just as he had in the Gryffindor common room. Mae met him in the middle, locking her arms around his neck as their lips pressed together once more.
Ron wrapped his arms around her waist, gently caressing the smooth skin that was exposed from her shirt riding up. Their lips moved together gently as first, before becoming heated. Mae parted her lips, and Ron pulled away. “Why’d you stop?” Mae whined, pouting as she pressed her forehead against his.
“It’s just..” Ron cleared his throat. “I know you’ve been with Draco, and I dunno if I would be any goo-”
It was Mae’s turn to cut Ron off, once again pressing her lips to his. She licked his bottom lip, making her intentions clear, and he parted his lips, allowing her tongue to explore his mouth. He began to get more comfortable with her, slipping his hands up her shirt to unclip her bra, dragging her shirt over her head with shaky hands. Mae smiled, before helping him do the same.
“Blimey,” Ron whispered, looking down at Mae’s exposed breasts. “You’re gorgeous.”
“So are you,” Mae replied, pausing as she saw Ron’s bare arms and chest for the first time. He had silver scars wrapped around his arms, and torso. “What happened?”
She trailed a finger across the scar, and Ron shifted uncomfortably.
“When we fought the Death Eaters in the ministry of magic last year,” Ron explained, wrapping his arms around her. “I got hurt. I’ll have these forever.”
“A mark of a hero,” said Mae softly, pressing a kiss to a rather deep looking one across his chest. “You’re so brave.”
Ron looked at her with a new hunger in his eyes, pressing her bare skin against his and pressing his lips to hers in a harsh kiss. This time, he explored her mouth, as his hands roamed her soft skin. Mae melted against his body, a faint moan vibrating in the back of her throat, pulling at his fiery hair. Ron groaned at that, pushing her down onto the couch and kissing her neck.
Mae wrapped her legs around Ron’s torso, her hands still fisted in his hair. Ron nipped at the sensitive skin at the base of her neck, his teeth grazing across her skin. Mae moaned, grinding her hips onto his growing hardness.
“Bloody hell,” grunted Ron, his lips pressing against hers again. His hands went to her breasts, his thumbs flicking over her nipples, smirking as she moaned into his mouth. Mae trailed her lips down Ron’s neck, sucking harshly at his skin. He tilted his head back, letting more of his neck become exposed to her.
Mae pressed kisses along his neck, coming back up to capture his lips. Ron’s hands trailed down her stomach, toying with the hem of her skirt. He pulled away slightly, giving her a questioning look. Mae nodded, and Ron slipped his hand into the waistband of her skirt. He pressed his large palm against her heat, the thin covering of her underwear being the only thing separating skin from skin.
“Please, Ron,” moaned Mae, pressing a harsh kiss to his neck. “Please.”
“Only because you asked so nicely,” Ron smirked, before slipping a finger into her core, pumping in and out slowly.
He slowly added another finger, pumping faster. He pressed a kiss to her neck as he went, and Mae began to feel her stomach tighten, and she shut her eyes, letting out a string of moans.
“I’m gonna cum,” she gasped out, her toes curling. She arched her back as Ron kept up his pace, and she came on his fingers, something that seemed to have shocked him.
“Did you just?” questioned Ron, pausing in his actions to look at her with interest.
Mae nodded, relishing in the feeling of her orgasm. A smile broke across Ron’s face, and he let out a nervous laugh.
“I’ve never done that before,” he said, raising his eyebrows.
“You were good at it for your first time then,” Mae let out a small laugh, covering her face with her hands. She felt a bit awkward, as this was much different than being with Draco. Ron wasn’t forcing her out, or expecting her to give him anything in return. It was so very different, in a good way.
It made her want to make him feel as good as he had made her feel.
Mae wiggled out from underneath Ron, ignoring his questioning look. As she brushed past him to stand, she could feel how hard he had gotten. Ron sat up, giving her a questioning look. She knelt down, unbuckling his belt and zipping down his jeans, smiling as his breathing grew heavy.
“What is you’re going-” Ron’s words were cut short as she took his dick in her hands, slowly moving up and down his length. “Bloody hell.”
She continued pumping his length, licking his red tip before taking him in her mouth. He let out a steam of moans, his hand wrapping in her hair. She swirled her head around the tip, bobbing her head up and down, moving back to focus on the tip. Ron pressed her head down further, groaning as she hollowed out her cheeks. She ran her tongue along the veins of his cock, loving the way he moaned her name.
He bucked his hips upwards, surprising Mae, and she made a noise in the back of her throat that caused Ron to curse. She sped up her movements, letting Ron guide her with his hand on the back of her head, twisted in her hair.
She could feel herself becoming aroused again, and she paused, letting go of his dick with a slight pop. Ron whined, upset that her mouth was no longer on his dick.
“Can we,” Mae paused, wiping her mouth and looking down, before looking at Ron once more. “Can I ride you?”
“Ride me?” Ron choked out, running a hand through his hair. “You don’t even have to ask, darling.”
Mae smiled at the nickname, her heart feeling like it would burst. She stood up, and put a knee on either side of Ron, hovering above his large dick. She looked at his once more, to make sure he wanted this too.
Ron wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her down onto his cock. Mae let out a gasp as he filled her up, grinding her hips against his member. Ron groaned, his fingers digging into her hips. She took a moment to let herself adjust to his size, before moving her hips up and down.
He kept a grip on her hips as he began thrusting his hips to match her own, moaning as she clenched around him. She held his shoulders, using them as leverage to move up and down. He matched her pace well, and Mae could feel another orgasm building in her lower stomach.
“‘M gonna cum,” she moaned out, noticing Ron’s thrusts become more sloppy.
“Me too,” Ron grunted, and with a loud moan, he came inside her, his hips stilling. She came nearly the same time he did, burying her head into his shoulder.
“Bloody hell,” Ron had his eyes shut, a half smile on his face. “That was amazing.”
Mae laughed lightly, moving off of him to sit next to him. She found herself unsure of what to do, as she was never allowed to be intimate after sex before.
Ron seemed to sense her uneasiness, and pulled her onto his chest, lying down on the couch. He pressed a kiss to her lips, before tangling his hand in her hair once more. Mae lay her head on his chest, listening to his fast heartbeat.
“I love you,” she said quietly, feeling Ron freeze underneath her. “I don’t expect you to say it back, but I wanted you to know.”
Ron wrapped his arms around her, kissing her temple softly. “I think I love you too.”
It was quiet for a moment, before Ron spoke again.
“Am I bigger than Draco?”
Mae lightly slapped his chest, shaking her head. “We are not having this conversation.”
“It’s an honest question!”
They lay there, arms wrapped around each other, and Mae realized she was finally loved the way she always wanted to be.

Remus shows Sirius around Wales (part 3)
I’m afraid there’s a lot of Welsh in this chapter, but as usual, translations are at the end! (And I’m getting better at writing out the pronunciation). Hope you enjoy!
For @daylily-evans
(Part 1)
(Part 2)
~ The next morning, Sirius awoke before Remus. He usually always did. Moony wasn’t a morning person, and Padfoot was. A strip of sunlight highlighted the bed. They’d both fallen asleep in each other’s arms and had remained in pretty much the same position throughout the night. And while Sirius was eager to get up and start the day, he was also perfectly content to stay where he was, with Remus’s arm lying across his chest, the boy snoring lightly every so often. Sirius liked looking at him.
He was, however, slightly- instinctually- nervy. Even though it had been three years since he’d set foot in Grimmauld Place, he still expected to be woken abruptly by someone- most likely his mother- barging into his bedroom without knocking. While Sirius’s eyes were fixed on a lock of brown hair that had fallen over Remus’s eyelid, his ears were straining for any outside noise, any movement from the landing, that would warn him to quickly jump out of Remus’s bed and back into his own. But none came. A late start must have run in the family.
Sirius brushed the lock of hair away, tucking it behind Remus’s ear, and as he did so, Remus’s breathing grew quieter, almost inaudible. An indication that he was waking up. Sirius kissed him. When he pulled away, he saw Remus looking at him with half-lidded eyes.
“How do you say good morning in Welsh?” Asked Sirius, in no more than a murmur.
“Bore da,” replied Remus, his voice thick with sleep. Sirius kissed him.
“Bore da, carru.”
Breakfast was toast and cereal. Lyall didn’t join them at the table.
“He works late,” explained Remus. “Sometimes he sleeps till almost midday.” Sirius chuckled.
“Like father like son,” he said, eating a spoonful of now soggy cornflakes.
“Oh, Remus, I hope you’re not staying up so late,” reprimanded Hope, who was sitting at the table with them, reading the paper with her second cup of coffee.
“No, mam,” Remus sighed, the two boys knowing full well that he was lying.
“So, what are you two planning on doing today?” Hope continued, not taking her eyes off whichever article had caught her interest.
“I’m gonna show Sirius around. See the village maybe.”
“Oh that’s nice. You should visit Mrs. Hughes, she’d love to see you.”
“Yes, Remus, you really must introduce me to this Mrs. Hughes. I’m dying to meet her. I can already feel a connection.” Remus simply smiled and rolled his eyes.
~
The sun was bright, although it wasn’t throwing off a lot of heat in the early morning hours, so Remus and Sirius walked side by side wearing jackets and scarves. They were ambling down the lane outside Remus’s house, with the birds singing. It was the only noise they could hear. Sirius had never felt more relaxed in his life.
The first stop on Remus’s tour was a little stream that stood at the end of a wall-lined alleyway. Brambles grew all over the walls and Sirius noticed clusters of blackberries hidden among the leaves. Remus picked a few.
“I used to come down here when I was a kid,” began Remus. “I’d pick the blackberries and wash them in the stream, then eat them with my feet in the water.” Sirius picked some himself, and the two made their way towards the stream, the gentle sound of the water reaching their ears as they drew nearer. The two banks of the stream were connected by a stone bridge. Sirius looked over the side at the water lapping over the stones and pebbles, reflecting the sunlight. Along with the birdsong, the whole setting was completely idyllic. He knew places like this existed in the UK, but he’d never seen them before. He’d spent his whole life in the dark, gloomy street of Grimmauld Place, where he’d never even met his neighbours because they were muggles, and he’d therefore been banned from going near them. Besides, his muggle neighbours didn’t even know that he or his house even existed.
The Potter’s house too, while much nicer and far more friendly than Grimmauld Place could ever dream of being, and while it too was tucked away in the countryside, it still felt rather cut off, and the countryside felt... empty.
But here... here it felt like a community, and Sirius had yet to even meet another person.
“S’mae, Remus!” Said a woman, suddenly breaking the silence. She was walking past with some shopping bags. She only looked around forty, maybe fifty years old, but she dressed like someone much older: short blonde hair curled tightly into ringlets, and a long, flowery skirt with a matching beige blouse.
“S’mae, Mrs. Cooper,” replied Remus. “Ti’n iawn?”
“Rwy’n iawn, diolch. Ywyt ti newydd ddychwelyd o'r ysgol?”
“Ydw.”
“Pwy yw dy ffrind?”
“This is Sirius,” said Remus, switching back to English to include Sirius in the conversation. “He’s a friend from school. He’s English.”
“Oh, how awful for you!” Mrs. Copper called to him, in the thick Welsh accent that Sirius simply loved. Sirius smiled good-naturedly. “Whereabouts in England are you from?”
“Islington,” Sirius replied. “It’s in London.”
“I went to London once. Very loud. Very bright.” Sirius nodded. Mrs. Cooper began to walk on. “I’d best be off. Don’t want the milk to turn.” She held up one of her shopping bags, indicating that there was some milk inside. “See you, loves.”
“Hwyl!” Called Remus. Sirius repeated him. They watched her leave, and Sirius sat down upon the bridge. It had railings on either side as barriers, and Sirius put his legs through two gaps in the bars so they swung over the side. A duck came floating past, quacking every so often. Sirius threw the blackberries that he still had in his hand into the water for it to eat. Remus copied him.
“It’s so... quaint here,” observed Sirius eventually. “And I swear I mean that in the best way possible.” Remus threw another blackberry. The duck dived headfirst into the water to pick it up.
“Yes, well... not much has really changed since the fifties. Forties even. This place wasn’t much affected by either of the muggle wars, and progress isn’t exactly rife in the north-west Welsh countryside. It’s like a time warp here.” He looked almost sad, but Sirius couldn’t understand why. Of course, he knew what it was like to deal with people who were stuck in their ways, and their time, and their ancestors’ time, but the people here seemed nice enough. And even so, at that moment, Sirius felt that throwing blackberries at a duck and sitting next to his best friend on a bridge was all he needed in life.
“You know...” he began. “I never saw myself as a countryside person. Too quiet and boring. I thought of myself as more of a city person. All loud and bright like Mrs. Cooper said. But... I don’t know... I can see myself living here. With you.” Remus looked at him.
“That’d be nice...” A silence passed before Remus slapped his palms on the railings. “Come on,” he instructed, his voice louder and more confident. “Lots to see!” He started to walk ahead, and Sirius stood up to follow, grinning.
“Ooh, Moony. I like a man who can take charge.”
~
The two walked a few more miles until they reached the village. It was a nice place. Quaint. The shops all looked like cottages, and trees lined the street, some of the foliage entangled with bunting. People were milling about with shopping bags and buggies and bikes. The shop names were all in Welsh, as were the signs, but they all had the English translations printed underneath in small lettering, so Sirius didn’t have to pester Remus every five minutes.
Remus eventually stopped outside a shop that Sirius recognised: chairs and tables sat underneath a frilled, baby pink canopy. Remus held out his arm.
“Mrs. Hughes’s cake shop,” he announced. Sirius clapped his hands excitedly. A bell tinkled as the door opened, and a short, plump lady with curly dark hair appeared from within an adjoining room. She spotted Remus and smiled brightly.
“Remus! Mae wedi bod cyhyd! Sut mae, cariad? Edrych pa mor denau ywyt ti! Ywyt ti wedi bod yn bwyta?” She drew him into a hug, and Sirius was starting to get the impression that Remus was well-liked in his village. This was of no surprise to Sirius. What wasn’t there to like about his friend?
“S’mae Mrs. Hughes. Mae’n dda eich gweld chi.” Mrs. Hughes stepped back finally and turned to Sirius.
“Bore da. Nid wyf wedi eich gweld o gwmpas yma o'r blaen. Ydych chi’n ffrind i Remus?” Sirius blinked awkwardly, as Remus quickly cut in.
“Nid yw’n siarad Cymraeg. Mae’n dod o Llogr. Ei enw yw Sirius.”
“Oh... hello. It’s nice to meet you,” she said, rather slowly, as if she was concentrating on each word.
“It’s nice to meet you too, Mrs. Hughes.” She smiled and nodded, before quickly returning behind the counter.
“Ywyt ti dau newydd gyrraedd?” She asked, taking out a tray of cupcakes from behind the glass and rearranging them into neat little rows. They all had chocolate frosting on them, and they looked delicious. Sirius couldn’t help but stare rather longingly.
“Ydyn. Fe gyrhaeddon ni nôl ddoe i.”
“Taith braf?”
“Oedd, diolch.” Remus saw that Sirius was struggling to participate, so Remus attempted to involve him in the conversation. “Mae Sirius yn fy mlwyddyn yn yr ysgol,” he said to Mrs. Hughes, who turned back to Sirius with interest.
“Wyt ti’n hoffi’r ysgol?”
“She asked if you like school.”
“Oh! Yes, very much. It’s fun.” Remus quickly translated.
“Hwyl!” Mrs. Hughes remarked. “Yn fy niwrnod, roedd ysgolion yn ymwneud â dysgu. Gwaharddwyd hwyl.”
“She says schools shouldn’t be fun.”
“Well, they weren’t till I arrived.” Sirius grinned as Remus rolled his eyes and reluctantly translated. Mrs. Hughes let out a bark of a laugh.
“Ryw’n hoffi ti!”
“She likes you.”
“I like you too, Mrs. Hughes.” Mrs Hughes giggled, not needing Remus to translate. She brought out a tray of small but very tasty looking muffins. She picked up two and held them out.
“Am ddim i'm dau fachgen!” She said, as Remus went to take them. He handed one to Sirius.
“Diolch, Mrs. Hughes!” Said Remus. Sirius repeated him, and the two left the shop, walking out into the sunshine, muffins in hand. Sirius quickly took a bite.
“Shit, Remus,” he began, having barely swallowed his mouthful of muffin. “I may have to ditch you and run off with Mrs. Hughes instead.” Remus laughed.
“You’d have to learn Welsh first.”
“No need. I will happily sit in silence as she brings me muffins everyday. No Welsh required.”
~
Sirius didn’t want the day to end, but he was content in the thought that he’d wake up tomorrow and they could do it all again, and the next day, and the next, until the holidays ended. He couldn’t believe that Remus hardly talked about this place. If he was Remus, he’d never shut up about it. He almost felt angry. He hated his house, his street, his parents. He never wanted to talk about them. He was happy to forget all about them. Remus had a lovely house, and a lovely street and lovely parents. So why did he pretend otherwise?
“Do you think you’ll live here when you’re older?” Asked Sirius. They were sitting on a wall that bricked in a nice green. The green was filled with trees and a little playground area. As the sun grew lower and three o’clock rolled around, a few children started to filter into the playground, laughing and carefree after what must have been their last day at school. Hogwarts finished a day early so everyone had a chance to prepare for their journey back on the Express.
Remus pondered Sirius’s question.
“I don’t know,” he said eventually. “It is nice. And I do love Wales, of course I do...”
“But?”
“I don’t know,” seemed to be his final answer. But Sirius was too curious to let it drop so soon.
“But everyone here seems to love you. Mrs. Hughes. That lady with the shopping bags. Don’t you like it here?”
“The people are nice, but they talk. They talk about me. They pretend otherwise, but I know they have their own rumours. About why I go off to boarding school every year. Why I have scars on my face. Why...”
“Why what?”
“My mother and I are very close. They know that.”
“What’s that got to do with anything?” Remus looked at him steadily.
“You know what they say about boys who are close to their mothers.”
“Oh.” The two fell silent. Until Remus decided to speak again.
“In the real world, it’s 1976. Here it’s 1953. The people say good morning and bake you muffins and drink tea with their neighbours, but that’s about all you can do. You’re either married or widowed, and your kids go to the local school and leave the village when they’re eighteen to go off to London, or Cardiff, or some big city that they can write about to their families. I don’t fit in here. Not really. And I think the people know that. They’re nice to me because they feel sorry for me. Maybe not Mrs. Hughes. She really is nice. But I can’t stay just for Mrs. Hughes, can I?” Remus wanted to end his little speech on a light-hearted note, and usually Sirius would take the cue, grin and say “I would.” But he was letting Remus’s words sink in, and suddenly feeling guilty about his previous anger. Yes, Remus’s life was completely different to his, but scratch the surface and they were still in the same boat. Outcasts in a conformist society, waiting for the day they could leave and never come back.
Remus jumped down from the wall.
“Come on. We can head back and I can show you the TV set if you want.” Sirius jumped down after him, realising that Remus was keen to change the subject. Sirius permitted him to.
“I’d forgotten about that. I’d love to see it.”

Sourdough English Muffins
If you’re going to have a sandwich for breakfast, your best bread option is an English Muffin. If you’re going to buy those, your best choice is Bays brand. But if you’re a Sourdough Person, you can make the best Anglo Muffs of your life at home.
Tumblr media
This recipe should be super chill for anyone who has baked sourdough before. It’s largely based on the method employed by The Model Bakery. We're gonna be frying these buns.
Neven’s Sourdough English Muffins
Servings: 12 Time: 15 min mix + 6 hour proof + 10 minute shape + overnight proof + 20 minute cook
INGREDIENTS:
400 g all-purpose flour
100 g high-gluten flour (or more APF)
10 g salt
300 g water
135 g ripe-and-ready sourdough starter
18 g olive oil
~1/4 cup semolina, or medium-coarse cornmeal
6 tbsp clarified butter (ghee), or plain butter
DIRECTIONS:
In the bowl of your stand mixer, stir together the flours and the salt. Add the water, the starter, and the olive oil. Attach the bowl to the mixer equipped with the dough hook attachment. Start the mixer on the lowest speed and mix for 3 minutes, then stop and scrape down the sides, releasing the dough ball from the dough hook. Kick up the speed to the next notch and mix for another 3 minutes. Stop, scrape, and increase the speed by 1 again; mix another 3-4 minutes, until the dough is smooth.
Transfer the dough to another, lightly oiled bowl (I like a wider, shallower container for this) and cover. Leave on the counter for 4-6 hours; it will need less time on a very hot day, more on a cold one.
Once the dough looks smoothly inflated—note that it may not double in size—flour a workbench. Grab a half-sheet pan (18″ x 13″) and lay a piece of parchment paper on it, then generously and uniformly dust it with semolina or cornmeal.
The dough should be light and gassy, so handle it gently and use flour as needed. With a bench scraper or knife, cut it intos dozen ~80 g pieces. Shape each into a ball by pulling the sides towards the middle and pinching together, then flip it over and roll on the bench to form a smooth top and a bottom sealed together by rolling. Place these balls on the dusted half-sheet pan, spacing them evenly; they will grow somewhat during their second proof. Cover carefully with a large proofing bag or plastic wrap.
Tumblr media
Proof overnight (12-18 hours) in a cool place—either the fridge, or something like a basement/garage if it gets no warmer than 55ºF.
In the morning, we’re going to "fry" the English muffins. You'll want to use a large cooking surface—either a griddle that will hold 1/4" of melted clarified butter, or one or more cast-iron skillets. I used two 12" cast-iron skillets. Heat them up for a few minutes over medium-low-to-medium heat.
Melt the clarified butter; this will happen quickly. Now pick up your muffins very gently and flip them into the oil with the un-dusted, top side down; you'll fit 3-4 per skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes, then flip and do another 3-4 minutes. Look for beautiful browning, but without burning; adjust the heat if needed. Also remember to rotate the skillet occasionally to avoid hot spots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When cooked, move the muffins to a cooling rack lined with paper towels. Rest for at least 20 minutes. Split with a knife and toast the inside if you'd like. Make into a sandwich, top with jam, or eat as-is. Store in a sealed container, and freeze after 1-2 days if any are left over.
Notes on ingredients and technique are discussed below these two braggy pictures. Yeah, I eat English Muffin sandwiches!

JUST A FEW QUICK SUGGESTIONS AND OBSERVATIONS, IF YOU HAPPEN TO HAVE A MINUTE
What’s a clarified butter?
Clarified butter is butter with its milk solids and water removed—so what’s left is just the fat part of it. It lasts longer and won’t burn as easily in the pan. To make it, you can just melt a stick or two of butter over low heat, then scoop off the floating milk solids and discard any watery stuff left at the bottom.
I’m sorry, I thought we were making English Muffins, not doing chemistry!
Yeah, well. You’re totally welcome to fry these in regular butter, but watch out for burns. Maybe turn down the temp and cook for longer.
I’m supposed to split these with a fork, not a knife, right?
No.
Are you sure?
Yes.
I’m pretty sure everyone says to split your English Muffins with a fork, NOT a knife.
People say a lot of things.
It’s how you get the nooks and crannies!
Oh here we go with the nooks and crannies…
Those are the best part of the muff!
I think we’re done here.
Nooks. Crannies. Hello!
Thank you, please leave now.
Who the hell splits things with a knife??
(yelling through the closed door) It’s what knives were invented for! Cutting things!
(crowd dressed up as Nooks and Crannies picketing outside my house) NOOKS AND CRANNIES! NOOKS AND CRANNIES!
Fine! Use a spoon! Use a cheese grater to “cut” your English Muffin! Put them in the dishwasher! Pickle them, for all I care.
Do you have a recipe for these based on commercial yeast rather than sourdough?
Not right now, sorry.

tonight was my grandpa’s wake, over zoom. I shared some stories there, but I want to put them on here as well. @cygnahime feel free to add on
.
when I visited my grandparents, often my grandpa and I were the first ones up -- my grandma habitually wakes up after noon. when that happened, I would go out to the kitchen and find my grandpa at the breakfast table: sized for two, up against a window, and next to the flowering tree they have growing inside most of the year.
grandpa was the cook of my grandparents -- I’m told that my grandma cooked when my mom was young, but after grandpa retired she said “it’s your turn”, and it was. he also would make my grandma’s breakfast and bring it to her to eat in bed, and when I was there and came in in the morning, he would ask me if I was hungry too. I would have what he was having: he got large muffins from the grocery store, and we would cut one in quarters and each have half. he’d toast the muffin in the toaster oven, and then spread it with whipped cream cheese -- he said the texture of it was smoother and easier to spread, especially on a muffin (which is pretty soft even after you toast it). we’d also have a little yogurt and fruit on top, and he’d have a small glass of orange juice and maybe coffee. I’d have tea, and coffee later when I got more of a taste for it.
we’d sit at the table and be mostly quiet together. my grandpa was a storyteller, and sometimes he did tell stories -- about the art on the walls around us, or a postcard on the table, or the mugs we were using. the last few visits, I favored a small reddish-brownish mug, and he told the story of where he got it and its pair -- I think it was a pottery sale in a Alabama, maybe? he said “you like that one, you should take it away with you! it’s yours now!” and I said “but grandpa, if I take it with me I won’t have it to drink from here!”
when we sat at that table, the painting on the wall behind me was fascinating -- shades of green, abstract, full of complex rounded shapes all smushed together. he loved that painting, and he’d talk about it -- he’d ask me to look at it, and ask me what I saw, and where my eyes focused. he’d also talk about the painter, who was the wife of a fellow professor when he was teaching. I have a painting by the same artist hanging in my kitchen now, that he had me take last time I visited.
.
until my grandparents no longer had the mobility, we would take a family vacation every year on Block Island, RI. they would also go back, in September or October I think, the last weekend the hotel we stayed at was open.
one of my grandparents’ magical skills is this: they make friends everywhere. they’re so easy with people, and so interested. and I know many people say that, but:
we went to a restaurant, a fairly nice place -- he liked to take us for one or two nice dinners while we were on vacation. we’ve sat down, and our waitress comes over. I don’t remember her name, but my grandpa notices her name and her accent which I believe was Eastern European, and he knows how people work for the summer on tourist islands like that -- he mentions that he hasn’t seen her before, and asks if this is her first summer here. she says yes, and that she’s earning money for the summer because she’s applying to an English program at a New England university.
my grandpa, the former New England English professor, says, “Which one? What’s your focus?”
when she tells him -- I think it was poetry -- he says, “I know someone in the English department there! What’s your email? I’ll give you his too, and I’ll connect you!”
five minutes, from ‘sitting down at a restaurant’ to ‘networking someone to an English degree’.
.
my grandpa grew up in a cold-water flat in Brooklyn. he told stories: in the morning, he would take the milk bottles back, and get 5 cents. then he would go and buy 5 cents’ worth of...beans, maybe? and bring that back, and that would be a meal.
we joked, sometimes, that he’s the proof Captain America could be real. when he went to enlist in the Marines, they weighed him, and he was too small. underweight. but the recruiting officer said, “come back in a few days. if you can gain the weight by then, I’ll let you in.”
do you know what you could buy cheap and can eat a lot of, in 1940s brooklyn?
BANANAS.
he ate SO MANY BANANAS. he bought a PALLET of bananas, and ate bananas right up until he went back into the recruitment office, and got weighed, and passed.
and then, if he could help it, he never ate bananas again!

Starting Over Chapter 33
Waking up in Bucky’s arms was something that I truly wanted to get used to - And the way he was grabbing me a little tighter as he woke up, snuggling deeper into my neck and shoulder, kissing his way to full wakefulness, I had a feeling he was all in.
“Morning,” I murmured as his kisses grew less drowsy and more hungry.  Biting my lip, my back arched so I met his heat, and then I was rolling over my hands searching for his neck as our lips were meeting - magnets, tongues tasting one another and I really liked our new normal.
Bucky’s teeth nipped at my lower lip as he slid into my warmth, giving me the freedom to make those noises that he’d told me he loved hearing.  He didn’t need to help my legs find purchase around his hips, his left hand was planted on the mattress beside my head while his right was sliding through my hair.
“I won’t break,” I promised, reminding him that he could control it, that he had before - that the bruises that came weren’t unwanted or unmanageable.
A small shift and his left hand was on my hip, holding me steady as the tempo took on a less leisurely pace.  His mouth returned to mine, and then he rolled, putting me above him - his idea of a compromise, but I rocked against him and he growled, making me smile against his lips.  Both of his hands slid up my body, along my sides and then, skin and metal, both were cupping my breasts and I broke our kiss as I gasped at the duality of it.  Our eyes met and I watched as he finally seemed to grasp it - that I loved ALL of him.  He shifted and my back met our mattress and our lips were pressed together as his hands, both of them, slid down my body to move my legs back into place around his hips.  And then they rose along my body again, and I felt certain, as we moved together - that Bucky understood that I wanted ALL of him all the time.
Breakfast was - different.  When we were in Louisiana we ate at the diner, well we did when we managed to get out of bed in time.  We’d only had breakfast once before he’d gone off to be a hero before that - So this was a different situation for us.
“Sit,” he pushed me toward my kitchen table and I raised an eyebrow.  “Please?” He softened it with a kiss on my nose and holding out my chair.
“Are you actually planning on cooking breakfast or are you just going to hand me leftovers from Romeo’s?”  I asked, watching as he walked back to the fridge in his t-shirt and boxers.  “I’m fine with either, by the way, I just want to know what to expect.”  I didn’t want to give Bucky a complex, hell half the time I ate leftover whatever for breakfast.
“Hush,” he shot me a look over his shoulder and I contemplated telling him to forget breakfast, I’d rather just have another order of him, heavy on the protein. Dear GOD, what was he MADE of?  I watched as he took stock of my fridge’s contents.  “I think you have everything I need -” He started pulling out stuff, carton of eggs, milk, cheese, some veggies that I fucking hoped were still edible - “Where do you keep your bread?”
“If it’s still good?”  I pointed to the breadbox.  He nodded.  “There should be some English muffins in the pull out drawer in the -” he went back to the fridge and gave a little woot of excitement.  “The butter is in there too.” I added helpfully.  I watched him pull both out.  “I’m guessing we’re having an omelet?”
He hummed, moving with more confidence through OUR kitchen now that he saw that I was at ease with him using it.  He found a frying pan, a spatula, a whisk, a knife - which he did a flip with that made my clean panties grow slightly damp doing - a bowl.  I watched as he worked, thinking that he moved like a dancer, silent, but also effortlessly.  He had the omelet going to almost finished before he popped our English muffins in the toaster.  He knew what he was doing, I’d give him that.
“Should I ask how you know how to do this?”  I asked, moving over to wrap my arms around him from the back and pressing my cheek against his spine.
His hands covered mine and I heard his contented sigh because my ear was so close to his skin.  “It’s not really classified information, Brooke.”  I chuckled.  “Omelets, toast?”  He shrugged.  “Everyone’s gotta eat, right?”
I nodded, snuggling into him, breathing him in.  “Yeah, but it’s not fair if you’re good at EVERYTHING, Bucky Barnes.”  That got him laughing.  “I’m sure you’re going to say Steve would tell me ALL the things you’re NOT good at, but he’s not here, and Sam is not really unbiased.”
“Guess not,” his hands moved and I knew he was flipping our breakfast.  “Gonna let me go so we can eat?”
“No,” I murmured.  “But I’ll unwrap my arms while we eat.”
First of all, Bucky Barnes can freaking COOK.  Who knew? Well I do NOW.  That omelet was amazing and I seriously considered forcing the cooking duties on him from that moment on, but then I thought that would be a shitty thing to do - so breakfast was his from that moment on when he was home - because I think we both knew that he’d eventually be called back to duty.
Second of all, we had a reprieve from Connie, but that wasn’t gonna last forever. In fact, it barely lasted a full 24 hours once I got to our house.  We finished breakfast and my cell phone gave the alert that I had a text, then it rang because she has all the chill of a house on fire.
“Hello, Connie,” I had her on speaker and I knew she knew it.  “I haven’t read your text yet, so let’s hear it.”
“Just checking to see if you two are doing -” she sounded like she wanted gory details of how the two of us were doing, had done, would be doing soon, and if there was a video just in case my memory was lacking.  “Oh -” I heard Joey’s voice in the background, squinting I wondered what fucking time it was.  “Joey wanted me to ask, before he runs out to work, do you guys wanna come over tonight for a tiny get together?”
“Tiny?” My eyes were narrowed at the phone and Bucky’s were wide.  “How tiny, Connie?”
“Oh, you know, just some of the old crowd.” She was being a little too vague for me.  “We’re so excited that you’re being more social that we wanted to celebrate.”  I looked up at Bucky and he was grinning.
“And I’m sure it has NOTHING to do with one Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes moving in with me, right?”  Bucky looked like he might end up cracking a rib soon from holding back his mirth, go figure.  “Why don’t you ask HIM if he wants to attend this ‘tiny get together’, Connie?”
The phone went so silent I had to check to see if Connie had disconnected our little chat.  I could see the seconds ticking by that proved she was still on the call - biting my lip I shared a look with Bucky.
“Do I get an invite?”  Bucky had joined me at the counter, having loaded the dishwasher with our breakfast dishes, and clearly wanting to poke at my best friend as much as I did.  “Or is this an ‘old gang only’ kind of shindig?”
His arms went around me and he was staring down at me, lips quirked in a grin that I mirrored as we waited for Connie to regain her ability to speak.  “No,” I snorted and Connie groaned.  “I mean, it’s not just an old gang thing - fu-” I heard her cover the phone with her hand and I knew she was promising her little mafia shakedown princess to put some cash in the swear jar after nearly dropping the f-bomb.  “Yeah, Bucky, of course you’re invited.” Connie came back on the line and ALMOST sounded normal - almost.  “I mean, if you’re not busy - doing Avenger type things.” Her voice faded toward the end and I swear both Bucky and I could FEEL her burning blush from her house.
“Wow, yeah,” Bucky’s laugh lines were in full force around his eyes and his teeth gleamed in a full grin.  “Sounds great, Connie.”  I shook my head, I’d rather eat paint.  “We’ll be there.”
I rolled my eyes, but he convinced me with a soft kiss.  Fine, I’d give in graciously - for HIM.  “Yeah, yeah, yeah,” I murmured when I pulled back.  “I guess we’ll be there.”
Connie gave an ungodly squeal and I considered a pitstop by the church to ask if the priest would come with - just in case she needed an exorcism.  “Awesome!  You’re gonna have so much fun seeing everyone - AND meeting everyone, Bucky!” She started talking a mile a minute and I felt my head spinning while I tried to keep up.  Jesus.  I finally cut in to remind her that Bucky still had to unpack and I had to - well I had to do THINGS.  “Right, of course - Just come around 6, ok?”  I assured her we would and then told her I loved her, while doubting the force of my affection as I hung up.
“She’s excited to have you back,” Bucky soothed, seeing how exhausted I felt after the call.  “Steve was like that too - sort of.”  He squinted, thinking back.
“Yeah, I have a feeling that he was a little less bouncy while he had you locked down in that vise, Buck.”  He chuckled.  “But, since we are now being forced to spend the evening with my -” I swallowed hard.  “There is something I want to show you BEFORE you unpack.”
He looked down at me with curiosity, but also trust.  Good, because what I was going to show him wasn’t BAD.  Grabbing the keys to the shed, I pulled him out the backdoor.  “You got something creepy in your shed, Brooke?”  He was teasing, but I wanted to show him the car - and I also wanted to offer him something else.

This week I bought myself a toaster oven (it’s basically a countertop-sized convection oven) and let me tell you that is some of the best money i have EVER spent
Today I made just a normal bread dough with a tablespoon of olive oil in it; let it rise real quick, shaped it into a flat rectangle shape (pizza!!), let it rise a second time; right before i put it in the oven i spread a little olive oil on top and sprinkled some fresh rosemary
Baked it on the preheated pizza stone for 25 minutes or so on 425*F - while it was baking, I cooked up a pizza/marinara sauce (sauté onion, cook garlic til fragrant, fresh thyme/basil/rosemary, tomato paste from a can, water to get desired consistency, and a tbsp of white sugar)
Took the baked crust out of the oven, cut it up while it was still hot and dipped it in that sauce
Holy shit that is some of the best food I have ever made for myself
(Per my experiments so far, anything I can do in a regular big oven or in a toaster, I can do in this toaster oven in half the time. Roasted veggies, fries, toasting bread/bagels/english muffins, baking small loaves of bread, pizza - tomorrow I want to try oven bacon for breakfast and chicken drumsticks for dinner, I can’t wait)

Chapter Fifteen
Emma was the first one awake the next morning. She felt like she was roasting alive, tangled between her guys who were both doing their best furnace impressions. She felt sweaty, sticky from their heat, and when she tried to wriggle away Bucky just held onto her tighter, keeping her in place. “Mmm no.” he grumbled, half awake.
Emma leaned over to kiss him on the cheek, “You’re a furnace.” she chastised him mildly.
“So ‘re you.”
“I’m temperate.” Steve interjected, surprising them both that he was awake.
“You were a furnace too.” Emma told him.
“This is nice.” Bucky commented, reaching across Emma to run his hand along Steve’s arm affectionately.
“I never want to leave this bed.” Emma moaned happily.
“Then don’t.”
“I need a shower. And the lure of creme brulee french toast is strong.”
“Okay that is tempting. But you know what else is?”
“Showering together.”
“If we shower together we won’t get out of this apartment until noon.”
“We can behave! Right, Stevie?”
“Huh?” Steve snapped to attention, having been preoccupied with the way the light hit Emma’s hair creating a multi-tonal sea of auburn hair that his fingers itched to try and paint.
Bucky raised his voice slightly, “We can all behave if we shower together before going out.”
Steve nodded, “That’s fine.”
Emma shrugged, hoping they would both be true to their word.
In the end, she was pleasantly surprised. Both men were able to keep things from going too far and, although there were kisses and the occasional straying hand, they behaved themselves. Emma was towel drying her hair in the bedroom, unwilling to waste time on a blower dryer, despite Bucky’s offer for her to borrow his. He had likewise foregone the dryer, instead letting his long brunette hair air dry in natural waves and curls. He gave Emma some of the leave in conditioner he favored and she ended up snapping a picture of the bottle to buy herself some later. It smelled wonderful and she liked knowing she’d smell like him all day.
Emma shot Steve a small smile when he perched his glasses back on his nose and got his hearing aid back in place. “That has to be better.” she commented.
He blushed lightly but nodded, “It’s not so bad without them but it is nice being able to see you better and hear you on both sides.”
“I want you to be able to see and hear me. It doesn’t bother me that you need a little help to do it.”
Bucky sighed quietly across the room while he pulled on his black tee. Emma was so intuitive with Steve. He knew the tiny blonde like the back of his hand after spending a lifetime with him, but Emma had rapidly picked up on his little tells and was able to ferret out his concerns with impressive accuracy. It made Bucky want to learn all of her little tells even more. She deserved the same kindness and acceptance that she showed them. Bucky mused he’d figure them out eventually. If he could figure out Steve, Emma should be a walk in the park.
Emma was running hair hands through Steve’s hair, helping him style it a little so it wouldn’t flop in his eyes. He was practically beaming under her care and Bucky couldn’t help but join them. He came up behind Emma, placing his warm hands on her hips and pulling her close. He moved her wet single braid of hair away from her neck and sprinkled kisses across her skin. She shuddered and swatted him away when she finished with Steve. “Doesn’t he look nice?” she prompted.
Bucky admired Steve for a beat before smiling broadly. “He looks like a million bucks.” Bucky drew Steve in to him, fitting their bodies together like puzzle pieces so he could duck his head and capture Steve’s lips with his own.
Emma took the opportunity to get dressed herself, throwing on her favorite soft jeans, a cotton camisole, and an old black and grey flannel shirt. She was comfortable and stylish, with just a hint of sexy thrown in from the low neckline of her camisole and the way her jeans clung to her curves. The guys were still making out and whispering to each other quietly between kisses once she was ready, so she perched at the edge of the bed to enjoy the show. It was a little voyeuristic but she was allowed to watch and she was taking full advantage of it.
Steve caught her eyes first and pushed Bucky away, whispering something that had the other man laughing lightly. “Ready, doll?” he asked her, discreetly wiping the side of his kiss bruised lips.
“Whenever you two are.” she assured him with smirk.
“Oh no,” Bucky warned, “Don’t start. I was promised diner breakfast and, in case you two forgot, I have a super soldier metabolism to keep up with.”
Emma stood up and patted a hand to Bucky’s chest on her way past him, “Trust me, we didn’t forget.” she told him with a cheeky wink.
Steve snorted, covering his outburst with a cough, and then quickly followed Emma out to grab their coats before Bucky could respond.
The diner on 5th was a short walk from the guys apartment and they had been there a few times before, but only for dinner or lunch. Emma had raved about their breakfast creations but insisted they wait until she could go with them. Two bites into his breakfast scramble and Bucky had told her that promise no longer stood. He all but inhaled the scrambled mix of eggs, potatoes, various meats, and cheese. After stealing a few bites of Emma’s french toast he ordered a plate for himself before she actually got him with the fork she kept trying to poke him with in revenge. Emma was happy as ever with her tall pile of brioche french toast loaded down with creme brulee filling and shards of caramelized sugar. Steve had opted for egg benedict but instead of having an english muffin base, it was over top tall slices of toasted brioche and the ham was the thick spiral cut kind. Both men couldn’t stop talking about how good the food was the entire way home and Emma just laughed, reminding them she’d happily go with them anytime.
Since it was a rare day off for all three of them, Emma agreed to lounge around their place for the day. There was nothing pressing that any of them needed to do and it was nice to just relax for a change. The only downside was, by the time she needed to head home in the evening none of them wanted to part. She knew she needed to go, the guys were both off to work in the morning, with Bucky leaving before the sun was even up. They passed her back and forth, unwilling to let go until, finally, cooler heads prevailed and Emma left with promises to see them again in a few days. Steve would have off on Thursday so she’d see him at Matty’s then, and they would both likely pop in on Saturday to see her.
Though the night air was still a little cool Emma took her time walking home, letting herself daydream a little about the past twenty four hours. She wished they’d had more time but she had to get back to her normal life eventually. Every moment with them felt like a dream, something warm and wonderful but separate from her day to day life. She wondered if they’d ever actually become part of her day to day. If they’d ever get to the point of doing laundry side by side, taking turns cooking dinner, and sleeping together every night. It was a nice fantasy, but knowing how devoted they were to each other she doubted it would ever become reality. Emma frowned, not at the thought, but at her reaction to it. She expected it to sting a little, when she remembered she was the interloper in their lives, but she loved how much they cared for each other and she knew she would never do anything to disrupt what they had. It was enough, she thought to herself, it had to be.
xxXxx
After their day off together their routines went back to normal for a few weeks. The guys popping in on their days off and on Saturdays together. They’d always find one day where their schedules aligned and they were able to grab lunch or dinner together too. Sometimes it was just a short few hours to lounge on the guys sofa and eat sandwiches before Emma had to head to work and Steve was off to one of his appointments, but they made it work. Eventually though, their schedules aligned again and the guys both had off on a night she did. After spending all their time at the guy’s apartment Emma had insisted that they come to her place for a change. She wanted to cook for her guys and something about having them in her space made her feel all nervous and excited. Like it was a milestone of them being together or something. Emma didn’t dwell on trying to pinpoint it, she just knew it felt special and she was going to make it perfect.
After a full day of cleaning her small apartment top to bottom, Emma was exhausted. She still had three hours until the guys were due over and she was trying to talk herself into getting off the sofa and prepping dinner. She wanted to get everything done ahead of time so once she was showered, dressed, and ready for the guys to arrive all she had to do was pop the lasagna in the oven and wait.
Emma had just started getting the ingredients together when her phone buzzed in her back pocket. She pulled it out with a frown, assuming it was a telemarketer or a scam. No one called these days, it was all texts. When she saw Steve’s face on the screen her expression quickly changed. She had wanted to ask him about allergies one last time anyway.
“I was just thinking about you, baby.” she told him sweetly.
“Emma.” Steve’s voice was ragged, “It’s Bucky.”
“What?” she breathed, terrified of what was causing his tone of voice.
Steve continued like he hadn’t even heard her. “I’m sending a car for you. They’re taking him to New York Presbyterian, he should be there any minute now.”
Emma was fighting for composure, “Okay, I’ll be there.” Numb from shock she put away the food she’d brought out for lasagna until the buzz of her intercom sounded and Happy announced his arrival to pick her up.
“What happened?” Emma asked from the back seat, her own voice sounding strangely calm to her ears while her mind was screaming in fear.
Happy, despite his name, looked anything but. “I’m sorry, Miss. I don’t have all the details.”
“But what do you know?”
“Well, it’s not good.” the grim set of his mouth made it clear he was done talking about it and Emma slumped back into her seat, defeated.
Emma wished she was a religious person so that she had someone to pray to while she waited the agonizing eighteen minute drive to the hospital. Instead she just wrapped her arms around her waist, holding herself in a futile attempt for comfort while she prayed up to the universe that Bucky would be okay. The second Happy stopped the car outside the emergency room Emma was bursting out of the car, running in until she saw a familiar face. Pepper Potts was unmistakable, her glossy hair and pale lilac suit all screaming wealth and professionalism. “Emma,” Pepper said, a statement, not a question.
“Yeah,” Emma nodded.
“He’s on the third floor, I’ll take you.”
Pepper didn’t elaborate on what had happened or what unit the third floor was, letting Emma trail behind her as they hurried through the hallways and elevator. There were ICU signs along the walls and the fact that they were following the same path as the signs didn’t seem like a coincidence to Emma. A gnawing fear took root in her gut and she was frantic by the time she saw Steve talking to a group of people in white doctor’s coats.
Emma screamed Steve’s name as she burst past Pepper, running into his arms. He stumbled back a step, accepting her in his arms without question. Steve murmured soft comforting okay’s and I got you’s while Emma clung to him. The scent of his cologne and the crisp wild undercurrent that was uniquely him filled Emma’s senses, comforting her despite the fear that still clawed in her chest. After a few long minutes Emma pulled back apologizing but Steve waved her off, making sure the doctors knew she needed to be filled in as well. She recognized Bruce Banner and Helen Cho but the other doctors were unfamiliar, she assumed they were from the hospital.
Bruce led most of the questions to the doctors, back peddling every so often to explain something to Steve and Emma when the doctors went too far in medical jargon. Helen was more interested in getting to examine Bucky herself which they assured her she could, they just needed to get him out of the OR first.
Happy’s assessment of “not good” had turned out to be an understatement. The list of what had gone wrong seemed longer than what had gone right. Emma pieced together that Bucky had been helping to evacuate an apartment building that had started collapsing after yet another aftershocks hit the area they were working in. He was more than a dozen stories up and the floor he was on gave out. They’d pulled him out of the rubble thanks to Sam and Redwing but he’d been unconscious since then. His leg was shattered and because of his serum it had started trying to heal before they could set it properly. They’d had to re-break his leg in order to get it positioned to heal properly but they still couldn’t rule out any long term damage. The bruises on his body were deep but were healing as quickly as they could. They just needed him to wake up so they could determine if there was any brain damage.
“So what do we do now?” Steve asked the doctors, gripping Emma’s hands in his own.
“Now,” Helen said, her voice solemn, “We wait.”

Bulk Breakfast Sandwiches
I love cooking in bulk. It usually takes the same amount of time as making a single serving, it's a great way to use up ingredients that would otherwise spoil before you can finish them all (Such as in the Ten Pound Potato Party) and having already prepped or even cooked meals in the freezer that just need heating is wonderful for those days when you have no spoons. So I'm considering this a Doing While Disabled entry. The very first, in fact!
DWD rating: Minimal spoons needed. I will include tips on how to get around obstacles.
Ingredients:
12 (Or more, if you are doing super bulk. I recommend figuring it at one egg per portion)
12 English muffins, toasted
12 slices of your favourite cheese, or about a cup grated
Salt and pepper to taste
Butter/margarine/cooking spray
Optional ingredients:
Diced and slightly fried bell pepper
Caramelised onion
Minced garlic
Cubed ham
Breakfast sausage patties (If you can only get links, remove them from their casing, mix with breadcrumbs or quick oats and form into patties and cook in the oven)
Bacon (Roasted in the oven in strips so you can cut in half or thirds)
Bagels in place of muffins (But you will need to make an additional half of the egg mixture)
Whatever yum ingredients and flavours you like with your eggs
Equipment:
9x12 baking pan
A large knife or pizza cutter
A large bowl, or lidded container
Fork or whisk (If you have a lidded container, this isn't necessary)
Aluminium foil or baking paper, if your pan isn't non-stick
Cookie sheet (Optional)
Freezer paper
Zip top bags, or other air tight container
How to make it:
Preheat oven to 375, and line your pans with foil. Lightly grease. If you are using sausage patties or bacon, bake them in a separate pan and keep them warm until assembly.
Crack your eggs into a large bowl, add any of the flavouring ingredients, like salt and pepper, onions, etc. Whisk together, or if you are using a container with a screw on lid, give it a quick shake like you're making a really disgusting martini.
Pour egg mix into the prepared pan, and bake for ten-fifteen minutes. Give it a shake after ten minutes, if it still wobbles a lot, leave it in for a couple more. At this point, the eggs will puff up like a soufflé. Don't worry, they'll deflate when they come out of the oven. (At this point, you've basically made a frittata, which would be great with some toast and a salad for lunch or dinner)
After taking the eggs out, turn your oven to broil, and lay your sliced muffins on a cookie sheet, cut side up. Toast until just crisp. You can do this directly on the baking rack in the oven, but by the time you take them all out, the last one will probably be burnt. I suggest sticking to the cookie sheet so they all cook evenly and you can take them all out at once.
Assembly time! Cut your giant egg into twelve portions. I like to use a pizza cutter for this, but a knife works just as well. On one half of each muffin, put a portion of egg, then your cheese, then any of the optional meat if you are using it. Top with the other half of the muffin and lightly pat down to help the cheese melt and keep everything in spot.
If you are serving these immediately for a large crowd, just serve them right away. If you are making them and storing them in the freezer, wrap them in freezer paper or foil and store in an air tight container for up to three months. To reheat, either take them out the night before and let thaw in the fridge, or put them in the microwave on defrost, unwrapped, before putting them in the oven for a few minutes to heat through and crisp up.
If you don't have the spoons to tackle this all at once, you can spread the steps out over the day, or even the day before. Sausage patties and bacon do well in the fridge after being cooked, and the eggs will be fine being chilled for a few hours after cutting. Just be sure everything is stored safely. The big positive is that all this work is about the same amount you would have to do to make one breakfast sandwich, but you can store these for those days when just walking to the kitchen is a struggle.

Microwave Breakfast English Muffins Sandwiches
Mod edit: This is one of those things where you do prep work for when you have more spoons and then eat when you dont
These are so versatile. You can make a lot of variants of these, from vegetarian to lactose free to even egg free.
What I use to make them:
English muffins (Could be gluten free or whole wheat)
Sausage patties
Cheese slices (I use the super plastic-y pre-wrapped ones, use what you like)
Eggs
Optional, or swap outs:
Vegetarian sausage, or other meat substitutes
Strip bacon (You can even use the bacon you cook in the microwave, but if you do, I suggest cutting it up into bite size pieces for easier eating - use scissors)
Ham or back bacon
How I assemble them:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a muffin tin well with non-stick spray. If you don’t spray them the egg will stick really badly and it’ll be annoying to get them out. (I think using a silicone muffin tray would work wonderfully for this, but I haven’t tried it.) Crack an egg into each well. I usually make these in multiples of six since the English muffins come in six and so do the sausages I buy. So six or twelve at a time. Season with salt and pepper, or whatever seasonings you like.
Cook the eggs for 15 minutes at 350. You want them to be fairly soft still so they don’t overcook when you reheat them.
Alternatively, you could use the egg whites in a carton and just fill each muffin tin about halfway. Check at 10 minutes. Or skip this step and just make it a cheese and sausage sandwich.
2. Meanwhile, cook the sausage in a large frying pan. I suggest if you’re using sausage rounds, use your hands to kind of press them out and make them wider and thinner, for better coverage and reheating.
Alternatively, cook your bacon, or sear your ham, or follow the package instructions for any non-meat alternatives you like.
3. While the sausage is frying, cut your english muffins and get everything to assemble. Do not toast the English muffins, or they’ll get tough and overly chewy when you reheat them.
4. When everything is done cooking, it’s time to assemble. I lay out parchment paper to wrap them up in, put a muffin half on the parchment, and then stack a sausage round (or ham/bacon/meat alternative), a cooked egg, and top it with a slice of cheese. Other half on, wrap it in the parchment, and stick in a ziploc baggie to freeze.
5. Freeze those suckers.
Plain egg and cheese are also good, and I suspect just egg and english muffin would be good as well. You could also just do egg and sausage or bacon without cheese, or any variation with any ingredients you think sounds good.
How to reheat:
Many microwaves will probably just be able to zap these for 30 seconds to a minute or so and be just fine. My microwave is old and not that powerful, so trying to cook everything as one thing can make the egg rubbery. What works best in it is taking them out the night before and letting them defrost in the freezer, and then opening up both the parchment paper and the sandwich itself, especially microwaving the sausage patty separately. Then it only takes a few seconds to microwave them.
All microwaves work differently, so you may have to experiment.
These are great for quick breakfasts, but could also be a good lunch or dinner with some soup or a sandwich or even some potatoes and fruit. It usually takes me about half an hour to forty-five minutes to make these, but you could take breaks between each part because it doesn’t matter if things are hot while you’re assembling, and you can easily make 12 at a time or even more, and stock your freezer and use a good day to prepare for bad days.
Also they just look really cute when they’re all assembled.

The 1,200 calorie diet: How to lose weight the healthy way
One of the better ways to lose weight is through reducing calorie intake. One low-calorie diet, in particular, requires cutting consumption to 1,200 calories.
Called the 1,200 calorie diet, this diet option is not like other diet strategies such as the ketogenic diet — it targets no specific food group. Instead, what matters is that you keep within the 1,200 calorie mark.
But this is not to say that you can eat whatever is around. The quality of foods on your plate will still play a role in weight loss and in any potential side effects. It is thus important to know which foods are the best to eat while on the 1,200 calorie diet.
Doing the 1,200 calorie diet the healthy way
Because you’re consuming fewer calories, there is the tendency to feel hungry many times during the day. Eating nutrient-packed foods will help you avoid constant hunger as well as malnutrition. Lean proteins are very dense in nutrients and low in calories. White carbohydrates, on the other hand, contain more calories and fewer nutrients.
To further guide you, below are some food ideas to follow:
Breakfast
Half a cup of shredded wheat cereal with a cup of one percent milk
Reduced-fat yogurt with berries
Berry and banana smoothie
Hard-boiled egg
One slice of whole-grain toast with peanut butter
One cup of fat-free cottage cheese with pineapple or strawberries
One cup of oatmeal with berries or a banana
Half an avocado with one cup fat-free cottage cheese
Lunch
A can of tuna, flavored with lemon juice or pepper
Arugula salad with cranberries, walnuts, lemon juice, balsamic vinaigrette and a light sprinkling of Parmesan cheese
A cup of Greek yogurt with honey, berries and almonds
Almond butter on a whole-grain English muffin
One avocado with salsa
Roast beef sandwich with low-calorie mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato on whole-wheat bread
Dinner
Two ounces of salmon cooked in vegetable oil, with pepper or lemon juice
Avocado toast on whole wheat bread with a side of green beans
Sweet potato with butter and four ounces of grilled chicken
Half a cup brown rice with one cup steamed vegetables and low fat cottage cheese
One cup of whole-wheat pasta with marinara sauce and three turkey or soy meatballs
You can also add snacks and treats as long as you keep below the prescribed calorie mark. Some of the best snacks are fruits and vegetables, nuts and toast. You could also occasionally treat yourself to some chips, kettle corn, popcorn or whole wheat crackers. This way, it becomes easier to stick to your diet given the allowances you make.
What to consider before trying the 1,200 calorie diet
The 1,200 calorie diet is not for everyone. First, the average adult needs 1,600 to 2,300 calories a day to maintain body weight. Cutting your calorie intake to 1,200 might lead to drastic and unhealthy weight loss, burning not only fat but also muscle tissue.
Several factors determine how many calories a person needs each day, such as age, sex, activity level, body size and medical conditions. The following individuals, for example, are recommended to skip this diet:
Underweight and malnourished individuals
Females whose menstrual cycles stopped due to eating a very low-calorie diet or due to being underweight
People with eating disorders
Pregnant or breastfeeding women
Children
People with specific nutritional deficiencies or imbalances
It is therefore important to check whether your body can respond well to this highly restrictive diet. Consulting a nutritionist can help you decide what diet options are best suited for you.
Once you’re cleared of any setbacks, however, the 1,200 calorie diet might be a welcome choice.

Healthy Tips to Reduce Calories and Still Enjoy Your Meals
Tumblr media
If you would like to drop weight, making some tiny changes in how you consume will bring you big results. Much of the way we consume is from habit. If we strive to become more aware of what and how much we're eating, we could cut down considerably on the amount of fat and sugar in our diet.
You see, many times we add sugar and fats into our meals entirely out of habit. I have watched people salt their meals before they even taste it. The remarkable thing is that making some rather small but practical adjustments to your eating habits can remove many hidden calories.
I have outlined some healthy suggestions which can deceive your mind and your tummy. You will drop pounds without even feeling as if you're dieting.
Breakfast
1. Pour fat-free, soy-milk or rice-milk in your cereal rather than whole milk.
2. Skip the donuts or sweet rolls and have a fruit salad, bowl of melon, banana or berries with low-fat milk. Sprinkle with flaxseed to get some healthy Omega-3 fatty acids.
3. Use cooking spray when cooking eggs rather than oiling the pan.
4. Choose nonstick pans rather than oil, too.
5. Liven up your coffee with cinnamon or nutmeg instead of sugary syrup.
6. Substitute Canadian bacon for regular sausage or bacon.
7. Make omelets healthier and lower in calories by substituting 4 egg whites for two whole eggs.
8. Omit or cut in half of the butter you normally use on bread and bread.
9. Pick all fruit jam over sugary jelly.
10. Utilize a skillet cream cheese as spread for bagels, toast and English muffins.
Lunch
1. Add lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles to your sandwich or hamburger. This can help to add veggies to each meal and you may omit the cheese or utilize a half piece of low fat cheese instead.
2. Choose fat-free mayonnaise and skillet or moderate Ranch dressing.
3. Have a grilled veggie sandwich at a pita instead of a meat sandwich.
4. Substitute regular butter for skillet spray.
5. Create your own pizza and use less cheese.
6. Substitute fat-free sour cream in recipes that are regular.
7. Trim all fat from cuts of beef, pork and poultry.
8. Bake, broil or grill your meat as opposed to frying.
9. Pick a homemade tuna fish (water packed variety) sandwich regular bread over a hamburger and fries or massive deli type sandwich.
10. Remove skin before you eat your cooked chicken.
Dinner
1. Try to eat at exactly the exact same time daily, or nearest to it. Keeping a regular program maintains your sugar levels and keeps you from overeating or becoming hungry between meals.
2. Add onions and celery to all soups to include taste and volume.
3. Eat an apple before meals to include fiber, vitamins and to help satisfy your appetite.
4. Drink water or unsweetened tea with your foods. Add a lemon slice and an orange slice rather than sugar.
5. Prepare your own salad dressing with two parts balsamic vinegar and one part extra virgin olive oil.
6. Reduce the amount of cheese in casseroles.
7. Serve vegetable appetizers in addition to meat and cheese.
8. Omit or cut in half of the butter you use to cook with.
9. Savor and enjoy your food. Eat slowly for proper digestion and to help you become fulfilled.
10 Cooking Healthy Tips For the Diabetics
Possessing the diabetics in our family can give us plenty of stress when attempting to cook a healthy food for them, and the diabetics will need to consume healthy food in order to not increase the sugar level in the urine. Its not good to leave home famished once you're diabetic, since this will improve your probability of eating foods that aren't healthy for you.
Try cooking your own food or eat food cooked by a relative to reduce the probability of you eating the food that is erroneously cooked.
These are the 10 cooking healthy tips:
Overcooking: When cooking for the diabetic, be sure to do not over cook the meals. After the food is over cooked it looses most of its nutritional value.
Roasting: Be sure to roast their meals, it assists in promoting the reduction of the sugar content in the urine. Plantain can be roasted either with your grill or the community roaster, the local roaster is preferable as its near to be natural.
Starchy food: Don't!! I mean never you try cooking some starchy food to the diabetic because this is one source of food which the sugar content is extremely high. Always cook foods that are low or don't have any sugar content within it. Like plantain, beans, eggs etc..
Steaming: Steaming is another method of cooking healthy for the diabetics, particularly when cooking vegetables, try as much as possible to steam your own vegetable so it will still retain its value. It is possible to allow to steam for around 3 minutes.
Deep frying: The fermented foods don't need a lot of skillet, so when cooking for the diabetics, don't deep fry the food. You may just stir fry for around 3 minutes so that it don't fry deeply.
Salt: Salty foods aren't great for the diabetics, you may try to avoid adding salt to taste, only a little salt will do. You can make this up by adding different spices to taste like, dried crayfish, garlic, onions, etc.. But don't add as much salt.
Stocks: Most of the stocks on the current market, groceries and supermarkets now comprises starch, and as I have mentioned previously, starchy foods are bad for the diabetic. The majority of these stocks; such as fish stock, chicken stock, beef stocks and the rest of these contains a great deal of starch.
Oil: Oil isn't too great for the diabetics, particularly the palm oil, groundnut oil, corn oil. If you must use oil for cooking, then use Vegetable oil only. Since this will minimize the chance of developing heart issue.
Meat: Red meat generally isn't too great for the diabetics, consider using lean meat, white meat; such as chicken. But don ot fry or over cook them. Meats may also be dried with little salt for additives. Its great to always have something useful to consume that is prepared by you or by a really good source.
Low fat: The diabetics don't need the so called'hidden fat' or fats which are invisible. Its best when cooking for the diabetic which you reduce fat diary foods one of the products. Its best when we use unrefined dietary fat such as seeds, avocado, fish, soy, olives etc..
Many canned foods at the grocery stores are refined so always stick with your unrefined foods. Cooking healthy food for your diabetic does not need much, just watch what you cook, when you eat and how you eat them. Its Important too you avoid sodas, both the sweetened ones since the majority of these sodas contains a great deal of sugar. And you'll be glad you did.

Yogurt + Flour = The BEST English Muffins You've Ever Had!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These muffins are one of the easiest things to make that I've ever made, use only 2 ingredients, and are ready in less then an hour.  What can be better then that????  While I don't know that I can actually call them "English muffins" because there is definitely a difference in ingredients, they look like them but they taste sooooo much better. I stumbled upon a recipe that wasn't in English but looked intriguing.  I figured out the measurements and made it.  While it was definitely very good, I knew it could be even better.  I adjusted the ingredients just slightly, made them a bit bigger, and ta-da!  It resulted in some superb little muffins.
Tumblr media
I thought this recipe may be especially important right now, while much of the country is quarantined and trying to make do with the food they have in their house.  There is no kneading, no complicated instructions, and no experience making bread required. Honestly, anyone can make these. If you want to make more than 8 of these muffins, I don't think I would double the recipe because it could get difficult to work with since it's quite sticky.  Instead, I would make 2 separate batches.
Tumblr media
What You'll Need:
self-rising flour (I never keep this on hand, so don't sweat it if you don't either.  Instead, I make it by adding baking powder and salt to all-purpose flour - amounts listed below)
yogurt (I used non-dairy coconut milk yogurt so any type you have on hand will do. If you only have Greek yogurt on hand I would guess you may need to add a couple tablespoons of milk or water to it to thin it out, but I've not tried it so I'm not positive.)
a large mixing bowl
a sifter (I used a mesh strainer.  I have not made it without sifting but I believe it could probably be done with good results - it would likely make it a more dense crumb.)
a wooden spoon or rubber spatula
a skillet (I used non-stick but you don't have to.  If you're using anything else you would want to brush a tiny amount of oil on the skillet before putting the muffins in.)
a lid that fits the skillet
a sharp knife
a spatula
oil (only if not using a non-stick skillet)
a silicone brush, piece of cloth, or a paper towel (only if not using a non-stick skillet)
wire cooling rack (if you don't have one you can use an oven rack, a toaster oven rack, or a roasting pan rack in a pinch)
Tumblr media
How To Eat
They are their absolute best the day you make them.  If you eat one shortly after making them you may not be left with any leftovers.... That being said, what we've discovered is that once they are a day or more old they are a bit more dense (no yeast = no air pockets) making them hold up beautifully for breakfast sandwiches, breakfast pizza or mini pizzas.  Toast or grill them first and then top and enjoy! Some ideas to use them include:
Toast them - If they happen to last longer than once you remove them from the skillet, you can cut them in half and toast them just like an English muffin.
Sliced and any topping added - jam, nut butter, nutella, cinnamon & sugar, butter, whatever your heart desires.
Sandwich - They would be perfect for making a breakfast sandwich out of.
Breakfast Pizza - almost like an open faced breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, chunks of cooked ham or sausage, and topped with cheese put under the broiler until the cheese is melted.
Eggs Benedict - they would be the perfect bread to add the poached egg, Canadian bacon, and bechamel sauce to.
Mini Lunch Pizza - a little tomato sauce, a few pizza toppings and topped with cheese put under the broiler until the cheese is melted.
On to the recipe!
Tumblr media
2 Ingredient Homemade English Muffins
Makes 8 muffins
3 cups self-rising flour (alternatively, use 3 cups all-purpose flour + 4 1/2 teaspoons baking powder + 1 teaspoon salt and whisk together)
2 cups yogurt (as mentioned above, dairy or non-dairy regular yogurt)
2 Tablespoons oil (only needed if not using a non-stick skillet)
Add the yogurt to a microwave-safe mixing bowl.  Microwave 35-50 seconds, or until warm.  Stir with a spoon or spatula.
Sift the flour (or flour mixture) into the yogurt.  With a wooden spoon or rubber spatula, carefully stir the flour in, working the outside of the bowl to the inside of the bowl.  The dough will look shaggy and be sticky.  Once the flour is almost completely incorporated, using your hand, turn the dough a couple of times in the bowl and then dump out onto a lightly floured counter.  Mold and turn a couple of times just until you can mold it into a fairly smooth log about 11 inches long.
Using a sharp knife, cut the log in half.  Cut each half in half and then again, cut each of those in half so you have a total of 8 pieces.  (the dough is very forgiving - if you accidentally make some too large you can remoe a piece and add it to a smaller one to create uniform pieces)  Gently roll each piece into a little ball, using a little flour if needed, but don't add too much.  Lay the ball on the counter and press it down lightly, creating flat sides on the top and bottom (see photo below).  Repeat with each piece.  Allow to rest for 15 minutes.
Pre-heat an uncovered skillet over low-heat for 4-5 minutes.  Once it's ready, brush with a teaspoon of oil if not using a non-stick skillet (use a silicone brush or even a cloth or piece of paper towel).  If you are using a non-stick pan, oil is not necessary.  Add as many muffins as will fit in the pan without touching.  They do rise a little and need some space to do so.  Cover and cook for 12 minutes.
Remove the lid, with a spatula flip the muffins, cover and cook an additional 12 minutes.  Once the 12 minutes is up remove the muffins to a wire rack to cool.  Continue with the remaining muffins.  **there may be a little moisture in the pan from the steam that builds up, it's fine.  it will not affect the muffins.**
Allow to cool at least 10 minutes before eating.  If you cut them open too soon they may be a bit doughy.  (not a bad thing....)
To store, once cool place in a Ziploc bag or covered container and leave on the counter for up to 5 days or freeze in a freezer safe bag or container for up to a month.
Tumblr media
the dough is a little shaggy once mixed
Tumblr media
create an 11-inch long log from the dough
Tumblr media
slice the dough into 8 pieces and gently roll each piece into a ball, flatten slightly
Tumblr media
flip the muffins after 12 minutes

Some nice foods I cooked/put together for myself before my disability reached a point that I am no longer physically capable of doing that but after I was strughling with fatigue and put on dietary restrictions !
[ Top left:
Gluten free english muffin sandwiches(x2)! The insides I believe were one of those pre-seasoned tuna packages(x1), some lettuce taken from a mediterranean salad bag, caramalized onions and cherry tomatos (tomatos were cut in to three pieces to cook more evenly until they were mushy). The side was some frozen seasoned waffle fries baked in the oven, avocados I opened and mashed and seasoned myself, and a beverage of sparkling water of kiwi flavour because that was the only carbonated drink I had]
[image two:
Gluten free English Muffin sliced in half. Both toasted, topped with everything dairyfree cream cheese and roasted cherry tomatos (again cut up) with some bacon bits thrown in.]
[image three:
Gluten free + dairy free deep dish pizza!!! Honestly it was one of the best pizzas I've ever eaten no joke. The dough and sauce was made from scratch. You can ask me for specifics but I did get the basis of my recipe from Julien Solomita's gluten free deep dish pizza video on YouTube. [he's Jenna Marbles bf if that helps you remember. It was on Aries Kitchen on his personal channel. That's where I got the idea to even make the pizza]]
[image four:
frozen hash browns frisd up with some hand made avocado mash and low and slow scrambled eggs.]

What’s Up?
Gosh, I left this blog for a few days and now that I’m back I feel like I should have exciting news to share. Sorry, it’s situation normal here on the Pullen spread.  We’re still sweating and trying to convince ourselves that it’s fall.  Pumpkins and mums are springing up everywhere but yesterday’s high was 98.  It’s ridiculous.  We’ve been so dry that I’m afraid our autumn color may suffer.  Dang it.
We did have one fairly pleasant day and wouldn’t you know that was the very day that I’d scheduled a jaunt out to a big barn sale with some pals.  We drove out to Starlite Farm, past fields of sunflowers...
Tumblr media
and arrived just before the gates opened. Eager women were lining up.
Tumblr media
It was a beautiful day and there were lots of vendors with fabulous items.  Live music, yummy food trucks, and treasure hunting - what fun!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think my favorite discovery was a booth with tee pees made out of chenille bedspreads. Aren’t they wonderful? Bet we could make one!
Tumblr media
I wasn’t looking for anything in particular but I did bring home some treasure.  A couple of bags of these tiny pumpkins ...
Tumblr media
and this cosmetic pouch from one of my favorite vendors, Southern Fried Design Barn.  She always has the cutest tees, kitchen towels, totes, and hats.
Tumblr media
I picked up these fun earrings  from a vendor named Here a Chick There a Chick.  Who doesn’t need a pair of zipadee doo dah earrings? Her whole booth was FUN.
Tumblr media
I also brought home butter. Yes, butter.  I told myself that I’d avoid all of the yummy food vendors and steer clear of the calorie-laden goodies.  Then I was offered a sample of this dark wildflower honey butter.
Tumblr media
Holy Moses, it’s delicious!  Better than any honey butter I’ve ever tried, and I’m a fan of honey butter.  Unfortunately the butter delivery vehicles are usually biscuits, rolls, and other warm breads.  Which is why that scrumptious honey butter sitting in my frig, still unopened.  I’ve got some Ezekial sprouted grain English muffins in the freezer, maybe I’ll toast one for lunch and slather it with that butter. Yummm.
On the other hand, THIS butter has not gone unopened - and it’s actually more delicious than the honey butter.
Tumblr media
On Saturday the mister grilled some salmon.  I tossed together a salad and baked two taters.  We topped the potatoes with this and OHMYWORD.  To die for.  Every morning I scramble two eggs in a little olive oil.  I usually toss in some spinach as well.  This week I’ve been adding the tiniest sliver of this butter and my eggs have been incredible.  I need to stock up on this one because I think the good folks at Wise Butter change their flavors depending on what’s in season.  Some of the other butters on their menu were lemon blueberry, roasted garlic basil,  salted caramel peach, chipotle, and lemon rosemary.  They use pure ingredients and the flavors are crazy good.  I’ll definitely be picking up some special butters for the holidays.  Get out your fat pants!
Speaking of fat pants, I took mine off to Jazzercise last week and had such fun.  My ankle really swelled by day three, but I’m willing to give it another whirl and see if it adjusts.  It’s a great class full of fun people, and even better it’s first thing in the morning! I’m always trying to get better, to improve...or at least not get worse.
Which brings me to my latest hair fiasco.  My hair had gotten too long. My hair is actually easier when it’s long, the weight of my massive pelt tends to keep it under control.  When all else fails, flip it up in a ponytail or stick it under a ball cap.  The down side of all that is that as my face aged I thought that long hair was dragging it down.  I have Churchill-esque jowls.  Imagine Winston with long, dark hair.  Not a good look.  Worse still, my hair grows fast, and that means that my white roots show quickly.  So I touch them up and end up with what stylists call “hot roots”, meaning the new color on white is lighter than the rest of your hair.  See where my hair is clipped back here - you can see those awful roots.
Tumblr media
Don’t judge, that was on a hot & humid day. Anywho, I was trapped in that constant cycle of color and touch up. Blech!  So with the mister out of town this week I decided to go do something drastic.  I knew it would take the better part of the day, but I told the stylist that I might be ready to just grow out my white hair.  If I could get massive highlights and get my color light enough, I’d let it grow.  I just didn’t want to walk around for a year looking like a skunk.  She told me that I’m too young to go white.  I told her that I’m almost 56 and a grandma - besides, I won’t be white, I’ll be sparkly.  This is not about me looking better, it’s about making life easier. She said she could do it.  I knew that a lot of length would need to come off and I was fine with that.  I was ready for a BIG change.  I provided plenty of pictures...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last picture was my favorite and really what I was hoping to get. Nope.
My sister knew what I was doing, so I texted her from the chair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From 11:30 to 4:30 I was snipped, processed, toned, dried, and styled.  I emptied my purse of money and walked out of the salon disappointed - not happy with the cut or color.  I decided that I’d tell Mickey what I’d done so that he’s not shocked when he gets home later this week.
Tumblr media
I was half mad and half sad about the weird cut (what IS that muffin thing on top of my head?), the color isn’t close to where I need to be but I’m definitely not going back for a second round. I think she actually teased it and made it look worse. The first rule of naturally curly/wavy hair is DON’T ANGER IT.  Geez.
As always, my guy came through for me.
Tumblr media
We both know that what he’s saying isn’t true, but at least he didn’t say something like , “OHMYGOD, WHAT HAPPENED?” or “Can you get your money back?”  So even though I cringe when I look in the mirror, my husband still thinks I’m cute and I can always wear a hat, right?
Tumblr media
I’ll take it off next spring.

Then add it to a glass jug along with the water. Then add the chia, the lemon, and mint and let it stand all night. They are what are known as metabolically dead foods. For you to see results quickly you have to eliminate them from your diet and replace them with healthy alternatives. 1: Processed Sugar: Contrary to what many people think. The fastest thing that makes you gain weight is not fat, but eating a lot of sugar. Sugar can be in many processed foods, such as high fructose corn syrup, juice concentrate, maltodextrin, brown sugar, fructose, etc. This is hidden in foods such as granola bars, protein bars, etc. Eliminate all types of sugar from your diet and substitute it with stevia (a zero-calorie sweetener), but you should still consume them in moderation. 2: Whole Grains with Gluten or Starch: Foods with gluten, starch, phytic acid can cause problems for your health. Gluten causes inflammation, starch is converted to sugar, and phytic acid prevents the absorption of certain minerals. It is better to replace your foods rich in whole grains with vegetables and fruits. 3: Vegetable Oils: If you use vegetable oils it will prevent you from losing weight quickly. These types of oils are genetically modified and cause inflammation in your body, cellular toxicity and are high in calories.
