The Rise of George Rosener
The Rise of George Rosener
Brooklyn native George Rosener (1884-1945) was a veteran of vaudeville, medicine shows, stock theatre, and clown alley when he made it to Broadway in the 1923 and 1925 editions of the Artists and Models revue. From there he went into the Shubert musical My Maryland (1927), based on Clyde Fitch’s Barbara Frietchie. Also in 1927 he cowrote the play Speakeasy starring Leo G. Carroll, which was made…

Spectacular Spider-Man (vol. 1) #1: Lo, this Monster!
Read Date: June 09, 2023 Cover Date: July 1968 ● Writer: Stan Lee (both stories) ● Penciler: John Romita / Larry Lieber ● Inker: Jim Mooney / Bill Everett ● Colorist: {uncredited} ● Letterer: Sam Rosen / Artie Simek ● Editor: Stan Lee ●
Tumblr media
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● I think reading the Mirage TMNT has got me used to black and white comics. plus the shading here gives it enough depth and texture to keep it interesting. even though it’s daylight, there’s a nice noir element
Tumblr media
● the shading is really excellent throughout! ● I was about to say that this is probably the first time Pete has been seen out of costume climbing a wall, but a little girl saw him way back—maybe even clear back in Amazing Fantasy 15–and he saved a security guard’s life while in his civvies but managed to keep his face turned away. here, though, people are actively trying to get a glimpse of him ● I love how consistently un-self-aware JJJ is ● this is a 64-page issue ● 👏👏👏👏
Synopsis: Story 1: Spider-Man is in the neighborhood as a Man Monster destroys a political billboard for the Mayoral candidate, Richard Raleigh. Two workers, installing the billboard, are almost killed by the rampage, but Spidey is able to rescue them and then battle the terrorizing titan until he is defeated and left, in order to rescue the workers again from falling from a ledge of a building, where Spider-Man had placed them out of the monster's path of destruction. When the Web-Crawler returns to mop up his opponent, he discovers he is now gone. Spider-Man reverts back to his civilian identity of Peter Parker and discovers the whole city has become "Raleigh Rooters" and that the candidate seems to have some unbelievable hold on the masses. His pals, Harry and Mary Jane, are among his most boisterous followers only outdone by his boss, J. Jonah Jameson, who has put his newspaper, The Daily Bugle, fully behind Raleigh's candidacy.
As New York watches Raleigh on television cry for union against the city's underworld who are obviously trying to intimidate him from running for mayor, he puts on a show that makes him seem like a common man who has the city's interest at heart. However, after the cameras stop rolling, he shows his true colors as a power-hungry ego-maniac who has his own interests at heart. Atop of his interest is to destroy Spider-Man and former Police Captain, George Stacy, who, he has learned, is looking into his background. It is revealed that Raleigh is behind the cyborg Man Monster and his creator, Dr. Thraxton. As Peter picks up Gwen for a date and drives away they witness the Man Monster attack the home of Capt. Stacy. Peter sends Gwen for help and then changes into Spider-Man in an attempt to save Mr. Stacy. The fight is carried on to Raleigh's house, which Spidey figures out must be behind the creature. He brings the fight into the Raleigh house where Raleigh uses the pain control apparatus he uses, to keep the Man Monster compliant to his will, a little too much and damages it beyond repair. The creature then turns on Raleigh and Dr. Thraxton, killing them both. Spidey finishes the fight with a vicious side-hand smash to the creatures neck, apparently killing the creature. Spidey leaves as he hears approaching sirens and is seen by Jameson, which he predicts correctly, will use his paper to call him the killer of Raleigh. Jameson states that he will make the public hate the fact that a man as great as Raleigh is dead, while the menace of Spider-Man is still alive and free.
Story 2: Peter Parker stands by the side of his grieving Aunt May, as Ben's remains are laid to rest. With the funeral now over, the pair walk out of the cemetery. Peter thinks back to the events that led up to the death of his Uncle Ben, and how he blames himself for what happened.
Peter reflects back to the day that he was bitten by a radioactive spider and given fantastic powers. Seeking a career in showbiz, he develops the identity of Spider-Man. However, one night he let a burglar run flee the television studio, telling the security guard that it wasn't his problem to deal with. Later that night, Peter's Uncle Ben was shot during a house robbery. Learning that the man responsible is holed up at the Acme Warehouse, Peter went after him as Spider-Man. Easily defeating his uncle's killer, Peter was horrified to discover that it was the same burglar who he let get away much earlier.
With his recollection of these tragic events over, Peter vows to never let his inaction lead to another person getting harmed as long as Spider-Man has a means to stop it.

Lionel Atwill in Doctor X (Michael Curtiz, 1932)
Cast: Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray, Lee Tracy, Preston Foster, John Wray, Harry Beresford, Arthur Edmund Carewe, Leila Bennett, Robert Warwick, George Rosener, Willard Robertson, Thomas E. Jackson, Harry Holman, Mae Busch, Tom Dugan. Screenplay: Robert Taskner, Earl Baldwin, based on a play by Howard Warren Comstock and Allen C. Miller. Cinematography: Ray Rennahan. Art direction: Anton Grot. Film editing: George Amy.
In Doctor X, Lee Tracy is called on to do two incompatible things: serve as comic relief and play the romantic lead. He succeeds at the former more than he does at the latter, which is not saying much.  (The comic shtick involves things like joy buzzers and exploding cigars, which gives you a sense of the level of humor Tracy is asked to participate in.) The film is a whodunit horror about a serial killer who strikes at the full moon and who leaves his victims mutilated. (The movie calls it cannibalism, but I don't recall any evidence that the killer actually ate the people he murdered.) The chief forensic clue is that the victims were sliced up with a particular kind of scalpel, used only by one facility in the city: a research institute headed by Dr. Jerry Xavier (Lionel Atwill). When the police detectives call on Xavier, they are introduced to his research staff, each of whom becomes a suspect in the killings. Meanwhile, Lee Taylor (Tracy), one of those anything-for-a-story reporters Hollywood was fond of, is snooping around too, trying to uncover the Full Moon Killer before the police do. This involves Taylor breaking and entering at not only the institute but also Dr. Xavier's creepy gothic mansion on a cliff in Long Island, where he lurks around in some skeleton-filled closets. (Cue the obvious gags.) He also meets Dr. Xavier's lovely daughter, Joanne (Fay Wray), and they inexplicably (at least where she's concerned) hit it off. Naturally, Joanne has to be put in jeopardy and Taylor has to rescue her. Doctor X is mostly remembered for its experiment with two-strip Technicolor, which yields some interesting if washed-out looking images, but also seems inappropriate for the film's sinister old dark house setting. There are a few nice scares among all the goofiness and pseudo-scientific poppycock -- the usual foaming and smoking beakers and flasks and some sparking and arcing electric apparatus -- but in a golden age for horror movies, Doctor X is decidedly second-tier.

Untitled Wednesday Library Series, Part 45
Now that I’ve staked out some blessed free time, I’m working on both the Albers and (more immediately) the Malevich I mentioned a couple posts back. I do, though, need a little more time. To that end, here’s the Fritz Kahn’s 1943 Man in Structure and Function (translated from the 1939 Der Mensch Gesund und Krank, a title I like less, by Dr. George Rosen).
In particular this is from the February 1946 third printing of the first edition, complete with barely palpable and nigh invisible embossing. Points against the necessity for flash to picture it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Text, the Object, etc.
I’m breaking with format here because otherwise I’d talk forever. Not sure who actually reads what I write in these, but in this case the pictures really are the post. Fritz Kahn was maybe the educational illustrator; the modern infographic and textbook illustration both owe huge amounts to him. His work was more in information architecture than data visualization, but it seems he did a little of everything anyway.
His biography and publication history are a little too tangled for me to confidently summarize here. Note, at least, that this book was written in Paris after he fled Germany in ‘37, was initially published in Switzerland, and only got an English translation (along with a couple other works, notably The Cell and Our Sex Life, all subject to significant alteration or destruction in their contemporary German editions) after he eventually secured residency in the US in ‘41.
Beautiful work here, if a little quaint in places. The integration of illustration with text is impressive, and the metaphors are uniformly robust. Calling the whole ‘accessible’ isn’t a cop-out; it’s the point. Plenty of the choices here persist in current biology/physiology/anatomy/chemistry texts. It is a little ra ra ‘industry and efficiency and mechanism-character of biology’ — the guy did make Der Mensh als Industriepalast — but zeitgeist or whatever. Weimar type shit. I’m soft on that, a little.
But anyway, observe ye Man Healthy and Sick as writ in bread and radishes and battles and tubes with feet. ‘Such is science’.

Love In A Hopeless Place
A/N: After watching John Rabe, I just fell in love with Georg and Langshu’s relationship and wanted to write something for them, particularly since more scenes of their developing relationship can be found in the extended version and isn’t available for most of the general population. For reference, the actors are only two years apart, so I am not really sure how old Langshu is meant to be, especially since she is supposed to be a student at a college, so I will say she is in her twenties and he is in his thirties (the movie came out in 2009). At a certain point, it is all fanfiction that is not based on the movie, and I tried my best to be as true to history as I could. This is a story that has been long in the making and I am so happy that I finally finished this piece.
Pairing: Georg Rosen x Langshu
Summary: She was a refugee seeking protect in a warzone, he was an ambassador trying to do his part. Can it be possible that love be found in a world filled with destruction?
Warnings: Love at first sight, smut (loss of virginity), war, mentions of attempted rape and masturbation, possible age gap?, happy ending.
Tumblr media
It had been a long night. Langshu didn’t mean to cause all this trouble, all she wanted to do was feed her brother, but instead, the night was filled with fear, fear of almost being raped, the knowledge that her little brother had killed to save her, the burial of her father, and almost being caught by the Japanese. Relief finally overcame her when Dr. Rosen had found her brother, who was alive and well, after they had split up from being chased. “It’s not safe to stay out,” he said in a soft whisper, “The college is too far, we should head toward my place.” Langshu held her bother close as they approached the big building, staying close by Dr. Rosen.
She was glad for the night, glad for the lack of light, so he may not see the adoring way she stared, as if confirming what she had thought of him, that he was her knight in shining armor, as the stories go. Ever since the day she took his picture, she couldn’t stop thinking of him and when she developed it, she had to make two, one that was intact and full, and the other for her to cut out in a perfect rectangle his portrait. Tucking the small picture in her sleeve, she kept it close by so whenever she felt particularly lonely for him, she could pull it out and study his face. It was such a kind face, but it didn’t quite capture the whole of him. His lovely dark hair that looked as soft as a raven’s wing, honey brown eyes that showed his soul, which was full of kindness and good intentions. His voice was gentle but sure, always offering a smile to the other students, but she sometimes felt that his smile was brighter for her.
He led them to a spare room and turned the light on. “Um, you may sleep here. The chaise is comfy,” he says pointing to the chaise big enough for a small boy, then turned and opened a door. “The washroom is here. Please, use it to freshen up if you wish.”
She smiled and nodded. “Thank you. For everything.”
He felt his cheeks grow warm and all he could offer was a small smile. Murmuring an excuse, he left them be and closed the door behind him. As he walked away, he realized that her clothes would not at all be appropriate to wear come day. Recalling the donation of clothes that he had received he went to search through for something. He could have chosen a simpler dress, there were plenty that would have been her size, but he chose a dark green with a white and red floral pattern party dress. She deserves something nice, something as lovely as her.
Georg carefully walked to the spare room, unsure if they would be asleep, if it was the wrong time. Softly he knocked at the door. “Langshu?” When he didn’t hear an answer, he opened the door carefully, not wanting to wake anyone and found that her brother was fast asleep on the chaise and the sound of running water in the next room. Quietly so not to make any noise and disturb her, he hung the dress on the door hook and left as if he were a ghost.
Langshu stepped out a few moments later, wrapped up in a robe, she smiled at her brother’s sleeping form. She turned and noticed the dress on the door hook. Dr. Rosen left it for her, and the thought made her smile even more. She was sure that he wasn’t going to expect her for the rest of the night, so she decided to dry herself off and slip on the dress, just to please him. She looked at herself in the mirror before leaving. She wished she had her long hair back, she looked too much like a boy, but she still smiled at the way she looked in the dress. Slipping out of the room, she made her way to his study.
Georg paced about his study for a bit, thinking. His thoughts should always be on the safety zone, how to help and protect, but now, he was caught up in her. When he had come to Nanjing, it had looked like a warzone, papers flying everywhere and people fleeing. But then, a sound of a click made him turn and half expecting a soldier coming for him, but instead, he saw a young woman with a camera. There was something in that moment that despite the cruelty and terror the world had to offer, it also had beauty.  He smiled but she started to run away, he made a movement to stop her, but with a glance back at him, she was gone.
He hadn’t expected to see her again, but when she came to see Rabe asking for his help, he stepped forward to see who it was, and he stopped when he saw her again. She gasped, as if she hadn’t expected to see him again, and he smiled at her but once again it was all too quick and off she went. She didn’t see that he leaned against the window and watched as she hurried away, longing for her to look back, to let him see her once more. To find that she was one of the students at the college, one of the people he’d keep in his care gave him a pleasure he never thought possible. The idea of being able to watch over her, protect her, made him feel better knowing she was away from the danger. While he was often busy working on the preservation of the safety zone, he never failed to stop and acknowledge her whenever she passed by. Sometimes he told himself he was just being polite, that was all, other times, he berated himself for acting like such a schoolboy. But no matter what, he knew the truth.
Making himself sit, he decided he would try to get some work done, but a soft knock at the door stopped him completely. He knew without knowing, that it was her on the other side of the door. He hesitated, taking a moment to be certain that his voice would not betray him, and said, “Come in.” He stood as soon as he could see her, and his heart began beating furiously. She was wearing the dress, and she looked so beautiful in it. She gave a twirl and he could help but to smile with her. This is why you fight, he thought to himself, not just because it is right, but to see that smile. They speak pleasantries, act like a pair of love-struck children, and there is a thrill when he asks her to sit and he is so close to her. This is the first time that they are truly alone.
Scattered on the table are pictures of his family, of his childhood, which prompts her to share her own picture, the one she keeps so close to her. Seeing that she had cut out the picture of him made him feel flattered and surprised. “Is that me?” he asks, surprised by his own expression. It captured him puzzled, thoughtful, but unafraid. They looked up at each other at the same time and there was suddenly a change in the air. They realized just how close they were to each other, how close their lips were and then, there was a sudden pull towards each other, like magnets and before they knew it, their lips touched.
She had never kissed anyone before, it wasn’t proper and she never had any kind of intended to kiss, so when his lips so gently pressed against hers, it felt like her heart could burst open and release fireworks and tears. When he pulled back to look at her, he saw the lovely expression of joy and he couldn’t help but to feel that too.  He has kissed one or two in the past, but beyond that, it never got any further. It wasn’t the same as those other times, this was completely different.
He felt eyes on him, and he stopped, of course, Shitler. He pulled away, murmured for a moment, then got up and turned the picture around. Shitler will not see what they will share together. She smiled and blushed, and her heart beat quickly when he offered his hand and she took it, standing before him.
“Dr. Rosen-”
“Georg,” he kindly interrupted her, “Please.”
“Georg,” she whispers with a smile and speaks it a few more times like a prayer. “When did you know?” she asked, “What was the moment that you knew?”
“When you tried to leave but then looked back, that look, it made my heart jump. That was my moment. Yours?”
“I knew when you smiled. When you heard my camera, you turned and the look of fear had gone, you smiled. That was mine.”
They kissed, long and deep and she swore she murmured a yes, swore she asked him to make love to her. He pulled back, looking down at her to make sure it was what she wanted before he led her to his room. Often, he’d look back at her, making sure that he doesn’t miss the moment of reluctance, that if she changed her mind, he’d make sure to let her know that it was alright and return her safely to her room. But she didn’t, her hand still secure in his. Opening his door, he allowed her to enter first. It was a lovely room, a dark wood bedframe with white sheets was the focal point of the room.
Georg closed the door and came up to her, taking both hands and looked down at her. For a moment, they just stood there, looking at one another, not quite sure how to start. Langshu reached up and kissed him, softly, letting go of his hands to cradle his face. The kisses became more fervent, his arms wrapped around her, making her press against his body. A small gasp escaped her lips between the kisses, not just because of their intensity, but because she could feel him through his pants, and it was a sensation she never knew.
She slipped his suspenders off his shoulders and worked on his buttons. He watched with tenderness and love, feeling neither ashamed nor nervous. This was a brand-new kind of intimacy that he had never experienced before and now couldn’t imagine it without her. Her slender hands ran over his shoulders to help remove the shirt, then returned to glide down his chest. He was different from the men she had seen shirtless before, there was hair on his chest, not a lot, but enough to admire. She didn’t think, but her lips led her to his chest, leaving barely-there kisses, and she felt a surge or pride at the gasps and heavy breathing above her.
Taking her face into his hands, he pulled her up to kiss her again and all the while staring deep in her eyes, he unzipped her dress and let it fall to the ground. She thought back earlier when the soldier had demanded that she and the other students undress to convince him they weren’t boys and she felt ashamed. She remembered how Georg had been kind enough to look away, both shame and anger coloring his face then, but now, there wasn’t any shame from either of them. She wanted him to look, and when he did, he thought she was the loveliest creature to behold.
They fell back on the bed, his body beside hers as they kissed, his hands ran down her neck, to her breasts and knead and caressed them. She felt his hand roam across her body, from her breasts, to her stomach, until he reached between her legs and carefully slipped a finger inside. At first, he faltered, seeing her gasp and unsure if it was a good or bad gasp. Tentatively, he tried again, slowly moving it in and out, watching as her expression changed from unfamiliarity, to a lovely expression, her eyes closed, a sweet smile on her lips and her back arching, as if she wanted to be closer. He wouldn’t let up, not until he was sure that she experienced pleasure once before becoming one with her.
Sharing a room with twenty other women didn’t guarantee privacy, but there were those nights that Langshu had managed to explore and give pleasure to herself, all the while thinking of him. She was grateful that she had managed to remain untouched by the soldiers, she wouldn’t have wanted her first to be anything but this. He did whatever she urged, her eyes screw tightly and soft whimpers escaped her lips, and soon, she felt her body react harder than it ever did before as she felt the familiar feeling of pleasure overcoming her.
He watched with wonder and love as she become undone for him, how her cheeks grew pink with desire and her lips moist as she released the prettiest sound she ever heard. Releasing himself from her, he removed his pants and as she settled herself properly in the bed, he slipped in with her. Looking down at her, suddenly, he felt nervous; he didn’t want to hurt her, didn’t want to disappoint, she deserved all the love that he could offer her, and he hoped it would be enough. Kissing her forehead, he took a hold of himself, found her center and staring into her eyes, only after she gave a soft but certain approval, he entered her.
It was such a strange but wonderful feeling, and seeing his worry, she took his face into her hands, brought him down to kiss and nodded. Slow and agonizing it was at first, testing the waters to see what would work, but soon, they managed to find the rhythm that was meant for them. Her legs and arms wrapped around him, the scent his cologne filling her senses, mixing with the clean scent of hers, turning funky and warm from their body heat. His hands gently held her hips as he carefully thrust into her, his lips kissing hers, and if he couldn’t, he’d find her cheek, her neck, anything else to worship her with. He hooked his arms under her, his hands buried in her short hair, pulling her body closer to his, feeling her breasts crushed against his chest. It was a feeling Langshu always wondered how that would feel and it was magnificent.
In this mad world where chaos and death surrounded them, it was incredible and miraculous that two people were able to find a moment of peace, of ecstasy and of love.
Langshu’s body is curled against his, her head resting on his chest and her arms around him, sleeping peacefully. His hand absent mindedly brushing against her shoulder, staring out the window to the rising sun. Georg was awake before her, for how long, he didn’t know, nor did he care. The world was quiet, one could almost forget that there was a war going on, that life was not as peaceful as it seemed. He wished it could be like this forever, soft, silent and happy.
Because of Shitler’s laws, he would be unable to marry her and walk with her as husband and wife, but he would not let that stop him. When the war is over, he thinks, I can take her and her brother away from here and we can start again. They keep their relationship a secret, besides the usual dangers of enemies knowing their weakness, the committee wouldn’t approve, especially Madam Dupres, director of the college, due to it being a conflict of interests. She is a refugee, he’s an ambassador. Nevertheless, they refused to end their relationship, enjoying what time they could.
The Japanese forces had declared that the safety zone was to be dismantled and that the refugees were to return home, but there was no home for Langshu and her brother to return to. Georg was not going to let this stop him, and using his influence, he managed to get the pair out of the country to England. Germany wasn’t entirely safe for them either and he knew that at least in England, they would be protected, so even if it was far for him to travel from Germany to the little house in the English countryside, it was worth it to know they were safe.
Langshu would have been happy if she was to live with him as a maid or cook, just as long as she could be near him, but he wouldn’t hear of it, and in secret, they were married with her brother there to witness. “When the day comes,” he tells her in the safety of their new room, “I’ll bring you home to Germany, and we won’t have to be afraid of anything anymore.”
Georg did as much as he could to help the Allies, to fight back against the fascists and make the world a better place. The war at last ended with Hitler’s suicide, but the Germany he knew wouldn’t quite be the same. People were broken, cruel and lost, and he knew it wasn’t exactly a place for his family. Instead, he had requested a transfer to work at the German Embassy in London, now closer to his wife, now expecting their first child.
There were times Langshu had missed her home in Nanjing, but just as Georg felt for Germany, she knew that her homeland would not have been what she had known it to be. If given the choice, she would’ve preferred to be in self-exile with her beloved husband, brother and soon to be child in a strange land, rather than to be alone in a home that was no longer her home.
The years passed them, her brother grew into a man with his own family, Georg and Langshu surrounded by their children, then their children’s children, and all the while, she kept photographic record of it all, keeping her interests alive. Georg was a model husband and father, loving and caring for each of his children, more so than most fathers of his generation, but he knew better than anyone how precious life was and wanted to never waste a moment.
He retires from his position when he is sixty and enjoys his time with his wife. He finds her one day making scrap books for each of their children and sits beside her, watching her. “That was a good day,” she remarks, looking at a photo of their children standing by a tree, “We’ve had many good days.”
“Yes, we’ve been lucky,” he answers sweetly.
As she goes through, she finds the small rectangle picture she took so long ago, and with a giggle, she shows him. “Look at that handsome young man.”
“I wonder whatever happened to him,” Georg says, recalling his youthful hope and innocence.
“He grew to be a handsome older man. And he is loved just as deeply as the first day he was looked upon.”
True, it hadn’t always been easy, almost impossible, but they had managed to find love in such a hopeless place, and wondered, perhaps nothing was as hopeless as it seemed.
