this may come off as just a little bit harsh but i would like to slam a brick against the head of whoever decided soundcloud should not ONLY have 30sec-long ads between songs for non-premium users, but ALSO make them as sonically unpleasant as humanly imaginable.
like yeah you're right i DON'T want to have loud toothbrushing and gargling ASMR blasted directly into my ears at 150% the volume of the song i was just listening to. you may think "great! now pay us for premium and we'll remove the worst audio ads you've ever heard :)" but literally all that makes me want to do is immediately close your app and find whatever alternative methods i can to never give you my money again

In Re: Carlo and Pride, I imagine Caleb's reaction to Galia's Big Shiny Parade will be something along the lines of "Good for them! Still not going!!!!!!!" ?
AHAHAHA yeah, I mean -- I think Caleb is softening a little towards Galia, because he's reached a point where he kind of knows who he is and who he wants to be, and he's comfortable with that, has a strong support network, a loving partner, social capital. But Fons-Askaz is his home, and if anything his conversation with Michaelis, where Michaelis is like "But you live, eat, teach, pay taxes here...you are Shivadh in any way that matters" affirmed that Galia is not somewhere he particularly wants or needs to return to.
There is a short story, not completed yet because I'm not sure where all it's going, where Caleb writes a song about Duke Tomas and drops it on Photogram, and it goes viral:
The app popped up the Photogram account of the Duchessa's younger brother, Lord Milo Ansevali, secretary to the duchy. His latest post was a video titled Reaction To 'Punching Down' by Caleb Canto.
Ah, shit.
Caleb sighed and clicked on it.
Ansevali had an earbud in one ear, and a mug of steaming tea in one hand, the teabag's tag dangling visibly. As the intro to Caleb's latest song came on over the video, he nodded his head in time, then set down the mug to start shoulder-dancing to it; when Caleb hit the first chorus, where the song got pretty intense pretty quickly, the camera began to shake wildly as Lord Milo enthusiastically rocked out. Caleb watched, fascinated, as one of the most powerful men in Galia began to headbang blurrily.
The chorus came to an end and the camera went still; Ansevali, visibly breathing heavily, went still again as well, only nodding his head gently. As the song hit the line Even his kids don't want his job, he delicately lifted his mug to his mouth and sipped, and the screen went black.
In the notes, he'd pinned a comment by the official Photogram of the Duchess of the Horse of the House of Galia, his older sister, Duchessa Ofelia. In Italian, it read How much would we need to pay Caleb Canto to move back to Galia?
Lord Milo had replied, Why pay him to move back? He's making our point for us from the Ask.
Caleb, who was not especially good at Photogram but was constantly around people who were, considered what Noah or Jerry would say if they were pretending to be him on his Photogram, as they sometimes had in the past. Then he opened the reply thread and tapped out, With affection for the Duchess from an Abdicaristo, I can't leave Askazer-Shivadlakia. My first love is the sea.
("Abdicaristo/a/e" is the term for a supporter of the political movement to democratize Galia and for Ofelia to abdicate the throne in favor of a parliamentary government. Ofelia is the head of the movement, which Caleb speculates makes life in the Palazzo Cavallo very exciting.)

autistic little phantom who needs a lot of support with it. needs help getting sensory needs met (usually in the form of sound blocking headphones and nonoverwhelming clothing) and also a lot of help with communicating. reaaaalllllllyyyy struggles to speak and will use an app of his phone to communicate as well as some choice asl signs (probably the same signs that babies are taught)
oh, i love this so much, anon !!! :D
he definitely has quite a few types of noise cancelling headphones and earbuds to use both when he’s regressed as well as when he isn’t (i like to think that the sensation of over-ear headphones can be too much for them sometimes so they have proper earplugs that block out noise as well if it’s an especially bad day for sensory stimuli
his packmates serve his food on separator plates so that all his food stays separated and none of it is touching parts it shouldn’t be. usually it doesn’t bother them, but when they’re little they feel so much more out of control than usual, so they need to be able to control certain smaller aspects (like different foods touching) even if they’re not actually aware of the reason behind it
the communicating thing, yesssssss !!! i don’t know much about communication apps/devices unfortunately but i think they would absolutely use those to help them talk and express their needs to their pack :D i do know a little bit more about sign language though and i think that all the ghouls know a bit of basic sign language, but rain, mountain and phantom are the biggest users of it. phantom’s still learning proper sign language, so in the meantime, he’s being taught makaton/key word sign so he can express his basic needs/thoughts (food, water, sleep, please, thank you, etc) even when he struggles with talking and doesn’t know proper sign language

maybe it's bc I just got out of the shower and have the Post Shower Motivation Boost but like. sometimes the best things someone can do to improve their day-to-day life isn't like the Big Monumental Lifestyle Changes and "buy this 20-step self help book/guided journal/fancy planner" (not to say I don't have my own fancy planner that I forgot to write in for a month) but more like. little changes/alternatives in daily habits that can help curb bad habits (without necessarily trying to abruptly cut them off) and making the shit you Can't Avoid more bearable where you can
If you have a habit of scrolling social media first thing in the morning and getting mad/upset/overstimulated before you even get out of bed but cutting out the Morning Scroll hasn't worked, or you need your phone on/close by and can't put it across the room to avoid morning scrolling altogether? Get an ebook (I recommend using Libby bc we love supporting public libraries) and put the app icon where your usual Morning Scroll social media usually is. chances are you'll go off of muscle memory and hit the same spot on your phone you usually do for your social media and open your ebook instead. And you'll probably either realize you were gonna get in a morning scroll loop and stop yourself and get started with your day... or you'll read your book and you still satisfy the part of your brain that Wants To Scroll while reading something less overstimulating than just post after post after post on social media
If you have work/schoolwork to do late at night and don't have time/opportunity to just go "fuck it" and do it in the morning? Sometimes it helps to get something comfy and put on music/ambience to help fit a certain Vibe while you work. Lo-fi is one of my go-tos, but putting on a dark/light academia mix with ambient noise like rain/writing sounds playing quietly in the background (this usually involves two youtube tabs) is also one of my usual choices because, while it unfortunately doesn't make my work magically done faster/due later so I can get to bed, it does help to sometimes feel like I'm a Pristine Scholar pursuing Crucial Academic Studies and not a tired college student who just wants to get their paper done and go to sleep
If you have a hard time getting up in the mornings/getting through a morning routine? If you can - if you have a long enough morning routine/a living environment where it's safe/not disruptive to do so - take some of your favorite music, or any kind of music that makes you feel a little happier/less worried or tired, and don't make it your alarm - you'll likely associate it with having to get up and start to dislike it - but make it the music to which you set your morning routine. (Use earbuds if you're worried about waking roommates/family.) It won't make the morning come any later/give you more time to sleep, but in my experience, this made me look forward to getting to carry out my morning routine and thus... look forward more to the mornings themselves
And... yeah. It wont fix everything but sometimes just changing habits here and there can be really helpful

“Reasonable” Accommodations that may get approved in a workplace (or school)
(this is obviously limited by our specific disabilities and varies job to job, but based on what we’ve asked for and what we’re currently discussing with our work’s HR/disability department)
a) headphones or earbuds with music
(In school we used this for tests. We were sometimes asked to test separately (different room, different time) from other students because of this, but it almost always got approved even pre ADHD diagnosis. At work, this helps us prevent overstimulation and thus work more effectively & safely. There’s more hoops and paperwork for a workplace, but we work in fast food and they’re actually letting us proceed with paperwork and the hoops to jump through so we can do it. We do have to have a “medical provider” sign off on paperwork &/or an official note stating that they know we’re disabled and agree we need the accommodation, but our workplace includes therapists for that. We’ll probably still involve our psychiatrist for backup/support, but they mostly just care that a professional backs us up. At school it didn’t matter what kind, but we’re discussing what kinds of earbuds/headphones are allowed with works disability people because food safety protocol limits which kinds they allow.)
b) texting in instead of calling out sick
(We go mute when we’re honestly sick, either because sore throat happens first or because the stress and overstimulation that come with being sick makes us mute (¿autism? ¿ADHD? ¿sensory processing disorder? it’s something around there). Usually a workplace avoids this because some people might text in sick when they just don’t want to work or have fun plans, so the big thing here is validating that you won’t call in just because and you’re texting because you *can’t* talk when sick. You do want to stress can’t or they’ll demand you to do it anyway. So it’s possible to ask for the ability to text instead (using text capable phone numbers or a messaging app if your work has one), and discuss with management or go through the HR paperwork to have that.)
c) more frequent breaks / more breaks
(This is a big one for physical disability. We usually ask for this because asthma & POTS together can be a nightmare. They usually don’t want to let you sit while doing your job in fast food, but they may be willing to let you take more frequent breaks or more total (a ten minute break every two hours as an example). Usually they stick to the legal minimum, so you may have to do HR paperwork for this &/or have a doctor’s note about why you need this (injury or physical disability).)
d) shorter breaks
(this one can better for ADHD/autism sometimes, or any dissociative disorder. the longer breaks usually get me out of Work Mode™ or give me too long to start dissociating. (I don’t always ask for this but it might work for you.) sometimes this just means breaking your 10min breaks into 5's, or breaking a 30 into two 15's or three 10's. it can also go with more breaks overall. it depends on your needs. this also usually requires a doctor’s note unfortunately.)
e) ability to take an Emergency Break™
(by this I mean an unscheduled break. In this case I’d need it for PTSD or a panic attack— the ability to step away (just nudge a manager or tap a code or have them know that sometimes you’ll have to duck out without communicating at the time) to let ourselves calm down. this could also be for physical disabilities where you may have an unpredictable episode, collapse, or a sudden/unpredictable need to use the bathroom or eat. usually managers get angry if you step away when you aren’t scheduled to do so, especially if there’s a lot of customers (peak period, rush, etc.).)
f) alternate communication methods
(we work in a kitchen environment. there are alerts for hot, cold, knife, blind corners, etc. as well as alerts when something runs out or is about to run out up front. we need to communicate (acknowledge or respond) with coworkers. but we go mute sometimes. so having a method like....three knocks means ‘working on it’, two knocks means ‘I heard you/acknowledged’, and four knocks means ‘I’ll do that now / I’ll start that now’. Or sign language (official language or one you work out between coworkers & managers; I haven’t learned ASL yet so I rely on signs most people will understand, like a hand drawn across my neck and then miming speaking (mouth movement with hand) to say ‘I can’t speak’/I’m mute), or hums/whistling/non word noises, or another method that works for you.)
g) ability to bring/have stuffed animals / comfort items or fidget toys
(this is obviously limited by what job you do. but when in school, we often did this to help us regulate. some jobs may allow this as well, especially with backup from a doctor, therapist, psychiatrist, or mix thereof. they might limit the size or type, but it’s worth investigating, if any fidgets or comfort items will help you concentrate or work easier or more effectively.)
~~~~
This is a starter list, but it may be a good leaping off point or give you ideas for something you may not have considered or thought possible/worth asking for before. If this helps even one person get the accommodations they need, then it’s done its job. ☺💜
¡Please add on if you have any suggestions for your disabilities or any of the ones included here!
I bought Nothing Ears! (2024)
Tumblr media
Picture credit to PCMag.
I'm a very big fan of the Nothing aesthetic but haven't committed to any of their non-earbuds products, because unfortunately I like having specs and RAM more than I like having LEDs on the back of my phone. That said I've bought all of their flagship earbuds at this point and liked the Ear (1)s enough to later buy the Ear (2)s, and after unfortunately setting one earbud through the laundry and the case simultaneously deciding it didn't want to charge the remaining earbud, I am now in possession of Nothing Ears at $150.
What a horrible naming scheme they've got going! They're already giving up the (1) (2) thing and not doing (3) and just dropping that. Now it's not clear what the latest model is actually supposed to be without checking release dates. Ear (1), Ear (2), Ear (A) floor models, and Ear? Fuck off.
Despite the schizophrenic reuse of their own case and earbud design for the third generation in a row and their inability to settle on a name after giving up the (Numbered) aesthetic the Ears are excellent, they fit comfortably into the ear, have pinch touch-controls on the stem, and look super sleek. The default controls are intuitive and have forward/reverse/play already bound, with a pinch-and-hold maneuver flipping through noise-cancellation settings. Pinch controls also aren't susceptible to water, unlike some Google Pixel Buds Pro I have that seize their touch controls if my fingers are damp. Pairing is quick and can be done with two devices simultaneously. Low-lag mode is still just as anemic as it is on any other wireless headset that claims the feature, I really don't think it's gonna happen for any earbuds at this point, just stop trying to give us wireless as a replacement for wired.
Noise cancellation on Nothing earbuds have an excellent bonus in that you can actually use the feature with just one earbud in. Very good for noisy work environments that still require you be attentive (like mine) or if you just don't want the volume at 75% of the way up on your phone just to hear everything. Transparency mode being the only available setting on basically any other wireless in-ears can eat me, I want to make just one ear feel full sometimes. Either way Nothing's algorithm for transparency mode and noise-cancellation is actually very good, and noise-cancellation especially shines for the aforementioned purpose of using it as a form of volume control. Detail in sound is not lost with noise-cancellation, but can be lost with transparency mode.
Sound quality is quite good, Nothing Ears come equipped with ceramic drivers (more of a marketing point than an actual benefit) and a mostly complete equalizer in the Nothing X app. A bass boost feature and a much more generalized equalizer feature also exist. Supports the AAC, LDAC, LHDC 5.0, and SBC audio codecs. Battery life is estimated by Nothing to be 8 1/2 hours on a full charge for both buds and a cumulative 40 1/2 hours with a full case charge. Sound comes across to me as fairly balanced but trends a bit towards bassy, which is a good thing in an earbud or TWS headphone.
I'm overall very pleased with the Nothing Ears and do recommend them as a $150 offering, but I'm not pleased that the Ear (A) floor model equivalent does not have Qi charging. I haven't tried Xiaomi's buds in a fat minute so I can't say anything about how they compare to Buds 4 Pro or Buds 5 Pro, but I do know Xiaomi's typically budget earbuds are getting heftier in price (5 Pro are at $100 now) and Nothing is $150 for a very solid option in the more "flagship earbuds" space while still being compatible with both iOS and Android. Xiaomi also dropped Qi charging on anything above the Redmi Buds 3 Pro which totals at $50, so I don't think it's a cost thing for them to have just stopped offering Qi charging. There are also Earfun earbuds at the same RB3P price-point with Qi charging.
How I Stay Focused On Writing (I Have ADHD)
I’d like to preface this by saying that I write and type mostly on my Chromebook, not on my phone or on a tablet, so some of these things might be a bit specific.
- Close any social media/communication tabs (Discord, Instagram, Tumblr etc...)
- I keep one YouTube video that I’m halfway through in another tab, if I get stuck while writing, I can quickly open that tab as a way to get my mind off thinking about writing. Plus, I also like tricking my mind into thinking I’m not working/writing by interchanging with something fun now and then!
- I refuse to use the same window for my music that I use for my writing. I don’t have YouTube playing music where I can see the tab, I always use Spotify and a playlist that I’ve listened to before.
- To continue on the Spotify thing, on the desktop app, there’s a little bar near the bottom right that shows volume. I keep it midway or a little past midway, it creates a softer sound for me. Then I only keep the actual volume on my Chromebook low as well, but enough that I can hear it. (Always use earbuds or headphones! I usually have my noise-cancelling ones on too, but normal ones work just fine!)
- I don’t use Google Docs. At least not while I’m in the process of writing. I use Notion because I love darker interfaces, it’s easier on my eyes, but any minimalist writing site works!
- Chrome has this cool group tab feature that helps me organize and close tabs I don’t need without actually closing them.
- I always write in the same environment for consistency and to train my brain into getting into writing mode, my best environment is my bed with two pillows for back support (I look like the dad from Coraline otherwise), but anywhere works!
- There’s this button on the Chromebook (the square one that has two arrows in the corners and it’s beside the reload button) that makes it so the tabs just disappear from your view. It helps a lot!
[A drabble I wrote a few days ago]
When Nikolai wakes, it's still dark out. Or… not. When he goes to rub the sleep out of his eyes, last night's eyeliner staining his knuckles, he finds his face engulfed in curls. It's daylight. He forgot to tie his hair back last night and now it's going to look like shit until he washes it again. He grabs for a scrunchie and pulls it back into a low ponytail, then grabs for his cell phone to respond to Ken.
Nothing to respond to. Their text history is a series of increasingly threatening text messages sent by Nikolai between 1 am and 6 am. No response back from Ken. Goddammit. He considers, briefly, texting an apology. He decides Ken doesn't deserve one if he can't even send a simple text back. He considers, also briefly, throwing his phone against the wall as hard as he can. He tosses it down on the bed instead and collapses back onto his pillow. It's too goddamn early for this. He still doesn't know what time it is. He didn't check.
He blindly grabs half a joint out of the ashtray beside his bed and a diamond encrusted lighter. Inhaling smoke, he decides maybe he's not mad at Ken anymore. He grabs his phone. Doesn't apologize. Texts "good morning, heart emoji." Sends a selfie with a glowing smile, cropped close enough to keep his flat on one side hair a secret.
Only when he reaches the end of the joint does he drag himself from bed. He uses the bathroom, brushes his teeth, and applies lip gloss before setting his sights on his hair. The curls aren't going to behave after the way he slept on it, there's no point in trying. Instead he detangles as much as he can with his fingers, runs gel through it, and styles it into two tight french braids. Presentable, until he can find time to wash it.
He returns to his bed and his phone. Still no text from Ken. He rolls a fresh joint in pastel pink paper and lights it before he can really get angry. Ken's phone is probably dead. Or he's out with someone else.
Nikolai pops in a wireless earbud and makes a phone call, to the part time cashier at the coffee shop across the street from Ken's apartment. They partied together once or twice; Nikolai has a taped confession of the lengths he's gone to to avoid paying taxes and child support. Real low stakes shit. Still high stakes enough for him to be willing to commit some real crimes to keep it hush hush.
"Is he home? Did he bring anyone home with him last night? What- yeah, hi, hello, how are you? Fuck. Is he home or not?" He takes another drag of smoke to avoid hanging up on his informant and pulls open a food delivery app on his phone. He's way too hung over to cook breakfast right now. He loads up his cart with an inordinate amount of eggs, pancakes, and sausages from a cheap chain restaurant.
"Call me immediately if there's any updates. Keep an eye on it." He doubles the order in his cart. Enough to share, just in case Ken drops by.
"Then work late! I don't want you going home at all! Keep a fucking eye on it!" He hangs up without a goodbye, assuming his instructions were clear enough. Fuck, the 'hang up' button is unsatisfying. He misses his old flip phone. This thing doesn't even have a place to clip charms.
He adds a big enough tip to his order to get priority over anything else the potential delivery driver might be doing. He's starving. Texts are open again. "Hey, come over! I made breakfast! Heart emoji."
Review: Soundcore VR P10
Greetings everyone! Here I'll be giving my honest thoughts on what I'd consider quite unique earbuds - the VR P10 from Soundcore. They're catered for gaming and have verified functionality with VR headsets such as Oculus Quest 2. Peak your interest? These can be found priced at £99/$99 via Soundcore's official website + Amazon directly, or in-person stores if you live in USA. Let's get started!
📦Unboxing Experience:
Pretty clean packaging imo with it's appealing design in addition to convinience. They also come with a decent amount of silicone ear tips which will suit many ears big or small (medium worked for me). Simply looked and felt premium all around, which gives me a great first impression. Good job so far!
🔎Appearence [next to Soundcore Life A2]/Comfort:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though I'm not a fan of this "Airpod stem" trend, these make an exception for me with nice silver details, signature logo finish + 3 customisable lighting modes (breathing, lights on and battery saving/lights off respectively). Those lights can indicate helpful stuff such as solid purple for on/fully charged, blue for pairing or flashing red when very low. Case looks great with a shape akin of stones...can I say it's included dongle is pretty neat too? Okay ty! Moving on, ear tips themselves also felt comfortable enough with only fatigue after some hours which was usually when both buds were low anyway. Speaking of...
🔋Battery/Connectivity:
Tumblr media
You'll be glad knowing that these earbuds have USB-C featured both on case for charging and a connector on the dongle. Also expect about 5/6 hours on buds (in 'battery saving mode') with an average 24 hours of battery life after giving them a full juice up. This is enough to get through 4 or more gaming sessions in my experience! In terms of speed, 10 minutes shall grant approx 1 hour of battery life for those clutch on-the-go moments.
Facts regarding this dongle btw...it's incredibly versatile featuring multi-platform support for PC, PlayStation, mobile and even Switch with lag-free playback. What's more, it allows Bluetooth audio from phone + received audio SIMULTANEOUSLY with Game and Talk (something I haven't come across before in other true wireless earbuds)! They can also be further compatible for Switch in docked mode or older devices with a USB to USB-C adapter (here's my recommendation). I've found the feature pretty useful for communicating on Discord or taking a phone call without much compromise.
🎵Sound Quality/App Features
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From my experience of "default" aka Soundcore's signature (no super hearing or Bassup), it seemed clear with bass which gladly dosen't drown out the mids and highs. Highs may sound weaker but that's kind of justified as these are geared for subtle audio like footsteps or gunfire rather than instruments like violins and pianos. BUT as we get into Souncore's feature rich app, there's so many settings to tweak and fit your personal taste!
You've got a plethora of equaliser options + the ability to create custom ones as standard with their app. Acoustic (my fav as it brings everything up a notch), Electronic, Pop, you name it. Mentioned earlier is bassup which allows bringing in more for a stronger punch which bassheads may enjoy and super hearing that will make subtle noises more audible, perfect for a competitive edge.
Speaking of tastes, let's talk colours with 5 options being light purple, red, pink, blue or Violet. Heads up that lighting will effect battery life to varying degrees. Have multiple dongles? Great news as which ones in use can be selected directly from app! Very useful if you're someone who has a busy life (on the flip side though, Soundcore hasn't made things clear rn regarding where more can be purchased).
Tumblr media
💭Are these worth the purchase? If you're looking for something with striking design, good sound for gaming in a small package and flexibility with software and hardware, absolutely Imo! Although I would personally like to maybe see slightly improved battery if Soundcore ever comes back to this concept in future. That's it for this review, tysm for getting here! Oh, and if you'd like to help me create better content or maybe obtain better equipment by donations, I've recently created a Ko-fi! It's completely optional but if you do, I'll be really grateful. Take care and live a good life!
I'm sorry to wired earbud fans but I have been converted to wireless earbuds. These aren't even expensive high quality ones and they're so much better.
This is literally the longest lasting pair of earbuds I have had in my entire life (~5 months and still going), and I use them almost every day. I've bought 3$ earbuds, I've bought 20$ earbuds, both last 1 week to 6 weeks (if I'm lucky) before the wire breaks. And of that time about half is spent with sound that only works in one ear or I need to hold the wire in a specific position lest the sound give out. Earbuds with volume adjuster buttons on them are even worse, as the moment the wire starts to degrade the earbuds start sending signals not only to adjust the volume without you touching the buttons, but also to pause or skip songs, and even switch apps. Plus if you get up and leave your phone on the arm of the chair you won't rip out the earbuds and throw your phone onto the floor. At worst you disconnect for being outside of bluetooth range. There is also no wire to get tangled if you put it in your pocket. And this probably depends on your brand, but not once have the silicone tips come off by accident.
Now the wireless earbuds do have some issues, but not any that weren't worse with wired earbuds. The main one being that the sound quality and volume is inconsistent. I don't know if it's from a flaky connection or if there's something physically up with them, but sometimes for a few days they'll be really quiet so I have to have them at max volume to hear anything, or the sound will be static-y, but after a bit of messing around with them they always go back to working perfectly. Something I cannot say for wired earbuds, because once their sound goes there's no getting it back.
So the only real downside is that you have to charge them, but even then, for every 2-4 charges I'd have to buy brand new wired earbuds. Edit: I don't have experience with this but if you forget to put them in their case it would be easier to lose one. So if you lose things easily there is a second potential downside.
So overall I strongly recommend wireless earbuds.
DISCLAIMER: this does NOT mean I support removing headphone jacks from phones.
20, 25 and 26 for the writing ask
20. Describe your perfect writing conditions.
Writing conditions, for me, are a thing I actually don’t often get to dictate for myself given the circumstances of my life, but in the rare occasion I can, the perfect setting and circumstance is when I’m sitting all alone in a room with just me, my iPad, a bottle of water, an internet connection, my Google Docs app, and preferably the perfect playlist or single song to set the mood playing on loop in my earbuds. I prefer nighttime the most, but I’m not picky about the time of day at all. I write during the day often. I just think night is peaceful and awesome.
25. What do you look for in a beta?
I don’t, actually! Haven’t used a beta in years. I only used one twice, and I think the last time I used one was in….early 2016 at the latest? I don’t think betas are necessarily bad or anything, but I did find that using them was a huge coin toss, because not every beta shares the same principles for writing that you do and if you get a hypercritical one that thinks writing always stylistically has to be done a certain way, it can suck all of the joy out of writing.
One of my betas back then was awesome, and the other was kind of a controlling asshole who told me the very premise of my fic was objectively shit, not even from a canon perspective, but just from a writing perspective in general.
That realization of, “this actually takes the enjoyment factor out of writing for me, personally” was a very important wake-up call I’m very glad I had, honestly, because it also got me to realize that not everyone actually needs a beta in their writing process, that it’s okay to not be perfect and follow every dotted line people set out for you, and that aside things like spelling and some very, very basic grammar rules, writing is very much a personal thing that is entirely up to individual preference and even many professional, successful writers break what some would consider “common sense rules” for writing.
26. Do you beta yourself? If so, what kind of beta are you?
I have beta’d for a few people, yes! I used to beta on Fanfiction.net, but the pressure of doing it “professionally” was too much for me to handle or enjoy, so I stopped a long time ago. I still actually do enjoy beta’ing it from time to time for my friends, since I really love helping them out when they’re looking for a second pair of eyes, and I love supporting their fics and getting to read them, even when they’re not my particular cup of tea. 🥺💖
As for what kind of beta I am, I’d say I’m probably a very ‘soft’ beta; I am willing to offer advice as a beta on characterization for characters I know, story points, writing style, and such, but I put it very much as a highly optional bit of advice, and even then I only do it if I know the person is 100% comfortable with me doing that and/or actively wants it. The only thing I will consistently do while beta’ing is basic things like spell-checking and some basic grammar.
It’s my policy to treat the people I beta the way I’d want to be treated, because of my past bad experience…
Thanks for asking! 💖
