A story in three. Beginning, end and rebirth.
Thingol l Elwe & Finwë (Tolkien Universe)
I've wanted to post these three for SO long, but I kept forgetting vkjdshvkous. But here they are, Thingol and Finwë's friendship and lives through the ages.
First two I made for Scribbles and Drabbles 2023 (@fall-for-tolkien) and the last one was a commission made for @i-did-not-mean-to (who I infected with my Thingol and Finwë sickness hehe.)
.
Post to the individual pieces:

Finwë, first King of the Noldor. He lead his people to Aman, to join the Valar in Valinor in the Light of the Trees. King of Tirion. His first wife Míriel dies in childbirth, leaving him to raise his first son Fëanor alone. He later marries another, Indis of the Vanyar, and has two more sons, Fingolfin and Finarfin, and two daughters, Írimë and Findis. When Fingolfin begs him to act against Fëanor, he does not interfere when Fëanor turns his blade to Fingolfin and threatens him in public. When Fëanor is banished, he follows him and takes up residence in Formenos, Fëanor's new stronghold. By this time, Finwë no longer sees himself as the leader of his people, taking on a smaller role as he lets his eldest son Fëanor take charge, despite Fingolfin's objections.
When Fëanor's banishment ends, Fëanor takes his sons and company to the summons of Manwë in Ilmarin, at the highest point of the mountain Taniquetil. But none of the other Noldor leave Formenos, and Finwë stays to guard the iron vault that keeps the Silmarils saying: "As long as Fëanor is exiled and may not go to Tirion, I do not consider myself king of the Noldor and I do not wish to see my people."
In Fëanor's absence, in the darkness of the death of the Trees by Melkor and Ungoliant, Finwë is slain by the doors of Formenos by Melkor, the first of all the Eldar to be slain in Aman.
When the Dark Lord came for the Silmarils, he did not run. He died where he stood, facing the first Evil, defending the son who he loved more than all.

Sketches - Silmarillion
On the top, from left to right: Fëanor as teen, child and adult
On the bottom: Indis, Míriel and Finwë
I usually don't do sketches before I make character design, being it original character or like here for fanart, but I want to get to the core of Fëanor so to speak. On the way I also think I found Indis, Míriel and Finwë.

CW: aftermath of graphic violence, corpses, blood; not explicitly described, but it's there
There is a lot of fanart around of Fëanor cradling Finwë's dead body, and while I find it just as moving as any other person, I can't help but think that the info we're given in HoME doesn't make it seem at all like the corpse was in good enough a state to make this possible
Maedhros: "... There we found the king slain at the door. His head was crushed as with a great mace of iron ... His sword lay beside him, twisted and untempered as if by lightening-stroke"
And of course, you can ignore this, but I think this version has just as many possibilities for angst... Consider:
Maedhros arrives at the scene first, and he never gets over what he sees there. He will know worse one day; battles are no pleasant thing, but this is his first experience of violence, and it is the greatest horror one could find.
Caranthir is second and Caranthir starts retching. By the time Curufin appears, Maedhros has regained enough presence of mind to stop him from coming nearer, and make sure Maglor and Celegorm and the twins - especially the twins, for stars sake, the twins! - don't have to see it.
And despite his horror, despite the nausea, Maedhros kneels down to pick up the pieces. He sends Caranthir for the casket... (it's just a box, of course it's just a box, but that's what poets will later call it) And to his horror, Celegorm appears in his field of view.
"Didn't Curvo find you?"
"He did"
And Maedhros is furious: "Stars, then why are you here??!"
"I've seen blood before, Nelyo" says Celegorm calmly, and Maedhros wants to protest that this is different than whatever he might have seen, but Celegorm has already knelt down beside him and begun helping in the bloody endeavour, though up close it's visible that he isn't as unfazed as he pretends to be.
"At least," says Celegorm "it must have been quick"
...
Later, in Tirion, Maedhros will have one of his rare moments of opposition to his father. He doesn't let him open the casket; he puts himself between it and his father. Hand on the swordhilt, almost as if he was ready to fight - he wouldn't dream of hurting his father, but certain instincts are already arising in them all.
"Will you not let me look on my father's face one last time?" Fëanor both pleads and demands in anger.
"There is no face" Maedhros replies. "I've seen it; you shouldn't have to. Do not ask."
...
Maedhros will only gainsay Fëanor one more time in this life, and he shall never again stop him.

An ask! Rank all the women of the house of Finwë (born or married in) with reasoning!
Earwen - FAV. THE girl. I have so many headcanons and she is WAY up on the list. She's so many leagues ahead. Love her.
Amarie - another fav, another blorbo who's mentioned exactly one (1) time, another girl who's entire personality i based solely on my headcanons. My hot take is that she deserves to punch Finrod in the face. She would be wrong about that but it would be funny.
Eldalote - THE VIBES ALRIGHT! I feel she's much closer in spirit to Aegnor that she is to Angrod. She's fiery and quick-witted and is as brilliant on battlefield as her brother-in-law. I don't think much about her but if you want to know, the lyrics I associate with her are "To please them, you need fire / to burn, reveal what your heart desires / you want a war? or justice? revenge, or revolution? / grab your sword, shield, ax, take position, we're spilling blood" (the song is "blood for the blood god" by prescious jewel armor)
Elwing - DESERVED BETTER. ALL THE BEST THINGS IN THE WORLD. ALL THE HUGS. HER FAMILY. HER HUSBAND. HER KIDS. HER BROTHERS. SHE WAS ROBBED AND YET!! love her
Galadriel - excellent aesthetic, tolkien's personal blorbo
Andreth (she counts. fight me.) - love her!! i don't have much thoughts but i love that she's a sage of her people and also her friendship with finrod is heartbreaking
Findis - now THAT'S some shaped design imo. I love thinking about her in Indis' and Finarfin's context but I don't have much else to say unfortunately
Nerdanel - I love how she's associated with water since there's not much characters who are assigned anything but fire. I love thinking about Feanor/Nerdanel, how their relationship developed and fell apart. Also I think she's neat.
Indis - just. yes. Love all the implications. Love thinking about the political situation she found herself into. Also love that she's not a perfect mother - it explicitly states she favoured Fingolfin.
Miriel - hmmmmmm yes the aesthetic!! she's definitely interesting and i love the fanon but i don't exactly love the saint-ification of her? And also hate how people use her to excuse Feanor's actions and slip-ups.
Lalwen - she's cool? i guess? i think the fact that she loved feanor definitely adds some spice and makes her stand out from the rest of her family. also i think she's fingolfin's little sister who causes chaos on purpose
Elenwe - love how she's mentioned exactly once yet has such a great impact on the narrative (re: turgon and idril)
Finduilas - i. don't have much thoughts. which is a shame. but her death was brutal and it makes me sad
Idril - she surely exists and she surely plays a big role but as i said before gondolin isn't much of an interest to me so i can't say much
Anaire - I literally have no thoughts about her but I saw amazing fanart that made me fall in love.
they're all special but some are more special than others

Here At The Beginning
Elu Thingol l Elwë Singollo & Finwë (Tolkien universe)
Is that time of the year folks! First entry for @fall-for-tolkien
You guys... how can I explain to you how much I love these two and their hinted at, strong ass friendship? I simply cannot. So I'll just draw them a bunch of times :D
Also, here, have the sappy thing I wrote for description for the piece in the gallery.
Before the Great Journey, there was Elwë and Finwë. Finwë was Elwë’s star, just like Elwë was Finwë’s gray star. And together they watched the stars.

Astaldo!
Tumblr media
Some fanart for @last-capy-hupping ‘s astounding fanfic Paying for the Poison They Sold Me, chapter 7. This is by far my favorite moment - the first step towards becoming Fingon the Valiant. Though my inner Fingon doesn’t necessarily coincide with this one, i hands down adore his coming-to-be arc.
“Astaldo!” Arakáno cried aloud. I am not… His youngest brother interrupted his thoughts by raising a dagger and slashing off one of his own braids. “Arvo…” Findekáno hissed, but another voice interrupted him. “Astaldo!” Turukáno cried. Findekáno’s eyes widened, and his voice failed him as he watched his other brother repeat Arakáno’s gesture. “Astaldo!“ This time, it was Írissë and then Lanwion who shouted. Each of them cut off a piece of their dark hair to toss towards the Arafinwion side. “Astaldo! Astaldo! Astaldo!” His epessë, the one that Finwë had given him for a simple victory at a joust, rang out amongst the crowd. ... I must move ahead and keep caring for truth and justice over my own glory every step of the way, he thought. I must hold our people together and get us across this Ice. I cannot un-slay the slain, but I can keep more of our people from falling to Námo’s doom if I remain steadfast.

My Chara-design for Elrond Peredhel @nolofinweanweek
"He was as noble and as fair in face as an elf lord, as strong as a warrior, as wise as a wizard, as venerable as a king of dwarves and as kind as summer."
