first, they came…
there was a post a while back, from a cis straight dude, that went something like that:
“first, they came for the transgender community, and I immediately spoke up even though I’m straight and cis because I’ve read the rest of the fucking poem”
and I believe this is such a powerful quote, and such an important message that apply to so much more.
the aguda, the main israeli queer association, that represents the entire community, released their homophobia/transphobia report, as they do every year around pride month.
there was a 93% increase of attacks based on the person’s gender/sexuality.
127% increase of physical attacks.
the transgender community in israel are 3.5 times more likely to be attacked than their cisgender queer peers.
46% of queers that were displaced due to the war reported they feel less safe than before the war due to transphobia and homophobia
20% of people reported an increase in bigoted attacks since october 7th.
39% of trans people reported an increase in transphobic attacks since october 7th
people forget that ALL oppressions are connected. the racism and hostility towards palestinians and arabs in israel, is directly affecting the hostility towards queer people in israel.
we cannot have queer rights without palestinian rights.
it is not possible to support one without the other.
oppressing queers because they’re palestinians is still oppressing queers
oppressing palestinians because they’re queer is still oppressing palestinians
if zionism cannot exist in a world where palestinians have freedom, then zionism cannot exist in a world where queers have freedom.
if zionism cannot exist in a world without the oppression of palestinians, then zionism cannot exist in a world without race based oppression.
if zionism cannot exist in a world where palestinians have rights, then zionism cannot exist in a world where women have rights.
you’re either with ALL of us, or you’re against ALL of us. end of debate.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. — Martin Niemöller
This November, when I vote, I'm going to spesk out for 10-year-old girls from Ohio, 16-year-old girls from Florida, and minors and other people all over the country being forced to go through things that should never have even been asked of them, let alone demanded. Who will you speak for?

“First they came …" is the poetic form of a 1946 post-war confessional prose by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984). It is about the silence of German intellectuals and certain clergy—including, by his own admission, Niemöller himself—following the Nazis' rise to power and subsequent incremental purging of their chosen targets, group after group. Many variations and adaptations in the spirit of the original have been published in the English language. It deals with themes of persecution, guilt, repentance, and personal responsibility.

"First They Came" is a famous poem about the rise of nazism in Germany in the 1930's and 40's. This was written in 1946 by a German pastor named Martin Niemöller (1892-1984). Here is the original German version, and the English translation.
Tumblr media
First They Came - English Version
First they came for the Communists,
And I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade-Unionists,
And I did not speak out because I was not a Trade-Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
And I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me,
And there was no one left to speak for me.
Direct English Translation:
As the Nazis arrested the communists
I have remained silent,
I sure was no communist.
As they jailed the Social-Democrats,
I have kept silent,
I sure was no Social-Democrat.
As they arrested the trade-unionists
I have kept silent,
I sure was no trade-unionist.
As they arrested the Jews
I have kept silent,
I sure was no Jew.
As they arrested me,
there was no one left
who could protest.
It's important to note that there are many iterations of this famous poem. Some leave out "Communists", some leave out "Jews", some change out the order, some change the wording slightly. While researching this poem, I came across an explanation that states Niemöller had travelled around and said many variations of this poem to many people. The versions shown above are the most common ones.
I spent a long time researching this because explanation was few and far between. I came across a German website that explained this a bit more, and I'll link it below.

First, they came for the nazis
And I did not speak out Because I was not a nazi. Then, all the nazis were gone. It was pretty great. In retrospect, we should probably have got on that sooner. Kinda dropped the ball on that one.
