A/N: so this fic wasn’t suppose to be as long as it is but i was bored and got carried away okay🙄 hope you like it though, its not the best but since its done ill post it anyways!!

Your ears perk up at the sound of an annoying, girlish giggle, making you cringe internally. Even with the heavy feeling in your gut and the tightness of your chest, there is a dainty smile plastered on your face as you turned your body to face Pope and laugh along with whatever he was saying.

It was about 1:30pm, sun shining bright and hot as ever out here in the Outer Banks and JJ had an arm thrown over a pretty brunette you have come to know as Minnie, Sarah’s cousin.

The seven of you are all situated together in a circle on the massive picnic rug you bought for sale the other day and it was surprisingly a cheap sale, despite the quality of its material and sizing. Recalling the groans of the boys when you tossed the heavy thing on top of them and the stunned expressions on Kie and Sarah’s face when they saw the cute blue picnic rug. You smiled at the memory.

It was definitely one of the best purchases you made, fitting all of you on the rug and the group has been using it for beach days ever since.

You turned away from Pope and joined in the conversation that Kie and Sarah were having next to you whilst Pope distracted himself with John B.

The topic was getting interesting and you were about to voice out your opinion when the sudden sound of Minnie’s loud laugh distracted you. Making your eye twitch in irritation. Minnie laughed as JJ began to tickle her.

Sarah noticed your hasty change of demeanour, the sour look on your face was evident, as clear as the sky and it would have made her laugh if it wasn’t for the fact that she saw the usual twinkle in your pretty eyes disappeared when your gaze on JJ and Minnie lingered a tad bit too long, reaking of obvious jealousy.

The group was well aware of your feelings for JJ.

The hot headed idiot has feelings for you too, they assumed, since he’s always been unnecessarily protective of you the most and had constantly flirted with you but even so, no one knows how the blond truly feels.

Especially now that Minnie started hanging out with the group.

Sarah was beyond excited at the news of her favourite cousin visiting the Outer Banks for a few weeks. She immediately introduced her to you and the pogues when Minnie arrived but now that excitement is slowly dying down when she’s been observing her best friend's mood shift from joyful to bitter whenever Minnie glued herself onto JJ.

Though you did try to hide it at first but Sarah knew you and saw right through the facade, having to be your best friend since kindergarten, there was nothing she did not know about you and eventually Kie caught on aswell.

Sarah wasn’t expecting JJ and Minnie to hit it off quite well though, Minnie had mentioned a supposed boyfriend when she called a month ago and now Sarah is just confused. They must’ve broken up? The Cameron girl thought.

“Lookin’ a little green there Y/n” Sarah blinked, eyes turned away from you to Kie who has a smirk set on her lips. You tore your attention away from the two losers flirting and looked at Kie.

“What? Kie, shut up” you scoff, instantly understanding what she meant. Sarah then begins to giggle, flinging a grape your way and joining in on the teasing.

“Green is not a good colour on you, ya know?” Sarah adds and you roll your eyes, bringing the bottle of beer up to your lips. Eyes steady set on the waves ahead crashing onto the shore with a soft hiss, hoping for the waves to get bigger and swallow you and only you, whole.

“you’re lookin’ alot like this grape right here babe” Kie quips and the said grape is thrown at your head. you groan and shove her with your shoulder, only making her laugh.

“Green? But Y/n looks good in green” JJ declares as he now joins in on the conversation, interrupting Pope who was in the middle of discussing his thoughts on a rare plant that he discovered on the internet. Your heart flutters at the compliment. “Forest green goes well with your skin tone the best” he continued.

Messy blond hair shining golden under the sun and his baby blue eyes are lighter than usual but it must’ve been that perfect tan he’s got going, making the colour of his eyes pop and more apparent. Blood rushed to your cheeks and you’re not sure if it was from the compliment: or from how beautiful JJ looks at this very moment.

Having caught on JJ's stare and his sweet smile, you miss the knowing glances the pogues shared with each other and just as you were about to reply to the blond, Minnie broke the silence with a giggle, making you cringe internally for the thousand time.

“I agree with JJ, i really liked that green crop top, long sleeved you wore the other day!” she said genuinely.

Head tilted to the side and showing off a toothy smile, the whiteness of her perfect teeth blinding you a little. You don’t hate Minnie, not at all. Hate is such a strong word and you would never use it on anyone. Maybe except Rafe, the guy was a douche.

Minnie has been nothing but kind to you and the others the whole three weeks she’s been here. She’s the definition of charming. Minnie holds beauty and grace, she’s talented and smart. You would say that she was everything you aren’t but that's a load of BS.

You are just as beautiful from head to toe, just as talented and smart, and a sense of humour, the kind that fits well with all different types of personalities of others.

You don’t have a single bad bone in your body so why were you jealous of Minnie? A girl who is not gonna be in the Outer Banks for any longer than a month? It is because she has JJ Maybank wrapped around her pretty finger just after a day of her being around.

Whilst for you, it had taken JJ a month to get properly used to your presence and another month for him to warm up and get to know you better.

It had taken two whole months for you to prove to him that you weren’t just some privileged, snobby, all good for nothing kook and after a while it had led you and the boy to a much closer, deeper friendship.

Then eventually you fall in deep. Deep into his captivating eyes and exciting personality. You fell in love with JJ Maybank.

You gave one of your best smiles to Minnie and thanked her kindly, eyes darting back to JJ who was still peering at you with a tender smile.

Minnie quickly caught on the lingering looks held between you and JJ. She didn’t like that, not one bit. She likes you, don’t get it twisted. She just saw you as a competition.

“so Y/n.. I saw you with Todd the other day?” She interrupted your moment.

You raised a brow with a slight tilt of your head, confused. You try to relive all the times you’ve bump into Todd recently but the only time you could remember was last week, when you both bonded over milkshakes and fries.“Wait Todd? As in, Todd Nelson?” Pope questioned.

“Why were you with Todd Y/n?” John B’s voice piped up, tugging Sarah closer to his body so she was practically sitting on top of him.

“Isn’t he kinda weird?”

“Yeah! i heard he has some kind of foot fetish but i dunno?“

“He’s pretty hot though?”

“Well i think you would make a cute couple-“

“Oh my gosh guys would you shush!” You announce, waving your arms in the air. “He’s not a weirdo and no he doesn’t have a foot fetish Sarah, what the hell?”

“Well it’s what i heard from Rafe-“

“Can we not talk about Todd right now?” JJ groaned in frustration, running his clad ring fingers through his tousled hair. A tight grip on the beer in his left hand.

“Aight JJ chill, what’s up your ass?” John B laughed as he found the annoyed look on the blond’s face quite funny, the pogues thought JJ’s disdain for Todd was amusing as heck because the male was obsessed with you and it irritated JJ (not that you knew that) and when John B pointed it out, JJ just shrugged it off with a dumb excuse that was “he’s too jacked up with muscles, he looks like a cloud” you laughed at the blond comparing Todd to a cloud. You honestly found JJ adorable when he was annoyed.

Your heart twisted when you saw Minnie linking her fingers with JJ’s and caressed his arm, comforting him like she was his girlfriend or something. Your face felt hot and you knew you were mad. You felt ashamed of feeling this way but it wasn’t like you could help it.

As a good friend of his you should be supportive and accepting, you should have been happy for him in finally opening up to someone as beautiful as Minnie because he was happy with her but you couldn’t bring yourself to feel happy knowing that he’s better off with someone else, but you weren’t a child. You swore you will congratulate the both of them if they do decide to get together and just cry yourself to sleep every night until you move on. That's the spirit!

JJ being in a relationship with Minnie, a stunning girl who could pass as a model. The thought weighs heavy on your mind and it hurted.

Minnie caresses his cheek lovingly and you almost gagged. Minnie just told a lame joke and now their bonding over it.

You held a breath behind pursed lips and before you could get up to move towards the salty waters and drown yourself in it the words that escaped Minnie’s lips left your brain in stutters for a moment as your eyes take in more light than expected, every part of you goes on pause while your thoughts try to catch up.

“I love you JJ”

The world seemed to stop moving, a heavy silence settled over all of you, thicker than the uneasy tension in the atmosphere. Unsettled eyes glanced around swiftly, to avoid catching other glances that passed by. Pope’s jaw is slacked and Kie and John B shifted uncomfortably in their seat as Sarah has never cringed so hard in her entire life.

Your mind was completely blank, brows furrowed as you stared at Minnie with displeasure and pure jealousy. Your heart screams at JJ to reject the pretty brunette.

He was bewildered, blue eyes about to pop out of their sockets. Lips shut tight in a straight line.

“Minnie what the fuck?” Sarah was the first to speak up and break the tensed silence. Your friends' eyes land on Sarah then back to Minnie and JJ, until finally landing on you to examine your reaction.

“Yeah Minnie what the fuck?” You seethed, the anger in your voice caught you off guard and the others too. You catch JJ’s eyes for a second before focusing back on Minnie who held her face in her hands and began to sob like a toddler. You rolled your eyes, arms crossed against your chest.

“I’m sorry everyone, i've just never felt this way about anyone before and JJ.. well he’s cute and I just couldn’t help but tell him how I felt. How i truly felt!!” she expressed quite dramatically.

In the corner of your eyes you can see Sarah pinch the bridge of her nose, Kie is covering her mouth with her hand and John B’s head is tilted back, eyes closed.

“You don't love him Min! you barely even know the dude?!” Sarah hoots, throwing her arms up in the air to get her point across.

“i just- i need a minute” Kid mutters to herself as her brain tries to comprehend what Minnie just said to JJ. John B’s head is still tilted back with his eyes closed, not saying a word, just sighing.

Pope is taken aback with Minnie’s confession and begins to shake JJ’s shoulders like a maniac. JJ grabs his wrist and shoves him away. “Minnie i-“ he pauses, not really knowing what to say.

JJ doesn’t feel the same and he wants to say it but with the way the brunette is crying heavily onto him made him stiff. He gawks at her for a moment before wrapping his arms around her frame, only because he felt bad and comforting her until she stopped crying was something that felt right to him in the moment.

He pats her back awkwardly but you saw this as a sign that he feels the same way she does and that he was only embarrassed to tell her that he loves her too.

You untuck your legs from under you and stood up so fast you blacked out for a second. You bend over to snatch your beach bag that was behind Pope and allow your feet to drag you away from the group.

“No Y/n! Get back here!”

“Y/n!”

You are being childish but you didn’t care. You mentally shrug off the embarrassment creeping up on your spine for storming off like that. Knowing that you will cringe later at your own dramatics. You thought you have walked far enough so the others won’t follow but the sudden hand in yours pulling you back forcefully made your heart jump and your chest bumping into a harder chest.

“Stop. Where are you going?”

The emotion in his eyes was fathom deep, heavy and blunt but yet still full of emotions. The striking blue colour held you in place. You sighed.

“I’m tired i guess? I’m fine J, just go back and i’ll-“ he attached his lips on yours before you could even finish the sentence and after a few seconds of not feeling you reciprocating the kiss he pulled away and leaned his forehead on yours. You stared up at him with confusion. A thumb caressing your cheek as your breaths mingled. “JJ?” You murmur.

“I'm sorry”

“For what exactly?” He ignored the sarcasm.

“Were you jealous of Minnie?” He asked stupidly, as if he didn’t already know. You begin to shove at his chest but he keeps you in place, arms wrapped tightly around your smaller frame. The cons of being a small girl. Your vision is blurry as it wells up with up-coming tears and you feel weak.

“Of course I was jealous of her, you buffoon” you cry. His heart ached at the sight of you unraveling in front of him. “I thought it was you and me? But she comes along and all of a sudden I don’t matter to you anymore?”

“Hey stop! that's-“

“No JJ you stop!” You find the strength to push him away this time and he stumbles back, almost losing his footing at the forceful shove. “I feel like an idiot for thinking that there was something between us, that you felt the same-“

“I do feel the same!” He steps forward and tries to reach for you but you take a step back. “You can’t just kiss me and expect things to be fine and dandy when all you did was pay attention to her and barely spared me a single glance!” His footsteps light as he moves closer, moving slowly and reaching out for you again.

“I felt as if i wasn’t good enough. Like you just got bored of being with me all of a sudden and it broke my heart cause i swore that we had something special even when we didn’t get along at the start!” Your lips wobbled as you sobbed harder.

“Shut up! Just shut up!” you jumped like a frightened rabbit when his voice echoed through your ears loud and clear. “Look i’m not great at expressing my emotions okay? It's just not easy for me to do sometimes and i'm sorry but i do feel the same. I saw you out with Todd last week and thought it was a date so i’ve been leaning on Minnie to forget about you. I fucking love you, im fucking inlove with you and im sorry okay?”

Your heart races when you look at him. Jaw clenched and his own chest heaving, fist bawled to his side. His little rant left you stunned and you wiped a few tears from your cheeks before pulling him into your embrace.

The arms that held him were soft, yet strong. The feel of your body so close to his soothed him and within seconds he pulled away only to kiss you again, and this time you reciprocated. You whisper plentiful of ‘i love yous’ against his lips and he feels his knees tremble at the sweetness of you.

He throws a heavy arm over your shoulder and pinches your cheek with his fingers making you fake groan in pain. You lightly punched his side and sprint off, laughing loudly as he chased after you and almost tripped on nothing.

He’s very good at reading people through their body language and voice and overall attitude, and so notices even subtle changes about the state of his bandmates through that. Hello, I’d like a matchup please~ I’m very curious who I’d fit with! Here’s who I am and what I’d offer, flaws (I’m pretty bad about being objective about that though, haha) and all: Personality: INTP. Quiet, relaxed, positive and self-assured normally. I’m not very insecure and almost never stressed, my friendangry. When bad things happen it won’t effect me much. I’m not very emotional and find it easy to be the optimist, or put things into perspective and move on. I’m introverted and private.

I just really like having myself, to myself? I almost never offer information about myself. I feel the need to socialise rarely, and I need a lot of alone time to recharge - I’d be horrible with someone needy, I’d feel so guilty. I show affection more through acts of service and gifts rather than quality time. I make an effort to be honest and sincere about those boundaries, what I want, and how I feel because that’s how I want people to be with me :) Strong believer of “treat others how you’d like to be treated.” Trust and honestly are dearly important to me, more than anything else. Promises are a grave thing >:( I’m uncomfortable with attention and responsibility and don’t like being the leader, I’d much rather be a follower. I’m more loyal than moral, I’d follow my friends through hell even if they lead the charge. It might be a conflict aversion thing too?. I don’t think I have problems voicing my disagreements with them though. I’d just rather go with the flow. Thinking about systems like societies, species biology, classification, and magic systems is the fun of it. I also like to do art, but really only because it helps to solidify characters and worlds in my head :D A trend I’ve noticed in myself is an interest in internet subcultures. I scour YouTube for the 1 hour documentary-esque videos compiling info about old bygone fandoms and internet groups. I also love classification systems. I adore the mess that is biological taxonomy and personality classification, it’s so fascinating! What I’m looking for: Someone who’s comfortable being their own person and gets that I need to be alone for a couple of days sometimes, and isn’t bothered by that. I’d like them to be upfront about feelings, no guessing games. Your quiet nature doesn’t bother him at all, Simeon can start a conversation with pretty much anyone.

Your positive attitude is something that catches the eyes of many, and you’d be a good balance to many of the characters. The way I see him, I think Simeon is more of a realist as he is definitely very observant and just like Satan, Simeon can read situations and people well. (probably thats why he is an author) However, that doesn’t mean your positivity is a turn-off for him. It just gives some balance.

Just like you, he is also introverted, which means he also likes his space and alone time. So thats something the two of you can respect. He is not clingy at all, so you don’t have to worry about recharging often.

I think a helping hand here and there, and a gift whenever you two meet or go on a date is a way to steal his heart! I think he would really be fascinated by human culture, you know? like it’s so nice of you that you think of him so much that you always get/make him something. As I said before, he is a spectacular judge of character, meaning he understand that you show affection differently than him. We don’t really know much about his love languages unfortunately, as he is still non-dateable (as far as i know but don’t cite me on this one i’m not keeping up with the fandom and i’m only at chapter 23 fghjk).

But ou mention that you also communicate clearly and sincerely, similar to him, so I don’t think there should be many conflicts at all in this relationship.

So you rather being a follower narrows down the circle quite a bit. But! Simeon is known to be a responsible character, I mean we can see how he guides both Luke and the brothers in some situations. He also has his way of indirectly helping character development of characters, so don’t worry about your flaws - he is not going to judge, in fact, he will figure out the best way for your own character development!

By that I mean he isn’t judging you even in your not-so-serious moments, though he takes notes and as I said will indirectly guide you on your path so you don’t make a decision that would cost a lot.

A Hat in Time Review (2017)

A Hat in Time is making me feel old. That’s not a criticism of the game. Rather, I’ve always sat comfortably in a belief I fostered as a teenager. That children are irritating noise-boxes that exist only to drill into the anger centre of the brain. Yet as I watched the protagonist of A Hat in Time scamper about with a silly grin on her face, I knew then that if I ever have a daughter, I’m getting her a top hat. It’s absolutely adorable. But aside from making me question my own beliefs, A Hat in Time has proven itself to be a great game in many other ways.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve played a game that feels this nice to control. That’s bypassing all the different gameplay elements and what have you. It just feels good to run around and jump. That’s a difficult thing to really convey in words, which is why I stuck in this little intro blurb, but it’s true. A Hat in Time is good, silly fun which forms the core of a nicely detailed world. In fact, as I bounced through its handful of acts, my only real complaint was that it’s too short. And if that’s the only problem with your game, then you’ve got yourself a damn good game.

Now, when you first look on A Hat in Time, you might be tempted to mark it a ‘Collectathon’. It certainly has a lot of the hallmarks. Main collectibles dotted around in hard to reach locations and a host of smaller ones dotted around in easier places. Worlds with an emphasis on exploring. You could also technically say that the hat is a secondary main character if you really want to stretch things. A Hat in Time is not a collectathon, however. In the traditional, Banjo-Kazooie sense at least. In fact, it shares more in common with Super Mario 64 than anything else. It has the same mission based structure. Except instead of stars, we’re collecting shiny hourglasses with the power to rewind time. Which is kind of cooler.

The plot, which is appropriately thin for the genre, follows Hat Kid as she gets out of bed and charts her progress through space. She’s on a spaceship, heading home. Unfortunately she then ventures into a sector of space that’s controlled by the Mafia of Cooks. They come to collect a toll and decide that the best way of doing this is to bust the window of her ship. Explosive decompression pokes its head in and sucks Hat Kid, the mafia goon, and all of Hat Kid’s fuel (which means the hourglasses) out of the window, scattering them on to the planet below. Once down on the planet, she bumps into Mustache Girl, who looks exactly as you’d expect.

They form a friendship and then a bitter rivalry but then the plot kind of gets lost in the background. Probably for the best, as the important bits here are those shiny hourglasses. We land in Mafia Town first, where a goon has gotten his hands on one. In order to get it back, Hat Kid must jump, slide, bounce and… hit things with an umbrella. Mafia Town is a pretty nice place to do this in too. It’s bright, colourful and full of A Hat in Time’s signature weird humour. The Mafia of Cooks, for example, look like how they sound - bald men in blue suits with chef aprons. They put up strange posters of themselves, while occasionally riding on giant chunks of meat. And hitting old men. Nice place.

In fact, all of the worlds in A Hat in Time are pretty unique. The second world has you, at one point, starring in a mystery thriller set aboard a train. An owl has been murdered and you must find the culprit with your amazing platforming skills. It threw me for a complete loop in the best possible way. The level after, my favourite level by a hair, has you traversing a spooky forest at the behest of an evil spirit with a love for contractual obligations. It was hilarious and, while spooky forests are by no means original, it threw in a few twists and turns that kept things fun. Like fighting a possessed outhouse.

The last world takes the training shoes off and gives you a big vertical playground to have fun in, which is where the gameplay is put through its paces. As a rule, the gameplay keeps things incredibly simple. There is little more than I said earlier: you jump and you punch. Occasionally, you might swing on something. How you get around in a 3D platformer is only part of the puzzle, however. The biggest bugbear in these games is always going to be the camera. We saw that in Yooka-Laylee last year, for example. An uncooperative camera can kill the experience. Thankfully, the bugbear in A Hat in Time is more of a bugcub. The only times it had trouble was when I was rubbing against the walls. At most other times, it feels perfectly free and unrestrained. It never snapped into place or took control away from me. That’s the true bugbear of other games.

It’s just as well, because A Hat in Time loves its boss battles. The aforementioned Outhouse, for example. In order to hurt it, you have to repeatedly swing into it, while also avoiding it when it tries to slam down on you. A sturdy camera and decent controls are required to make these boss fights fun and A Hat in Time pulls it off. The final bossfight, against Mustache Girl, is wonderful too. Challenging, but not overly so, and brings back lots of elements from previous levels. Good job. In fact, the only times I fell out with the gameplay are when it flouted an odd love for stealth. As a fundamentally unstealthy person, it didn’t suit me. The second world is the worst offender, with cameras stationed everywhere that are an instant hit and reset. It strikes me as an odd choice in a game about running and jumping.

But that’s just an odd note in an otherwise perfect tune. A Hat in Time has certainly slotted in as one of the favourite games I’ve played this year. A damn shame then, that it was over so quickly. There are only forty of these Timepieces and they aren’t that difficult to scoop up. I gathered all forty, had a good time doing so as well, but it ended far too soon. My playtime makes me a little sad, to be honest with you. There are only four worlds here too, a rather smaller number than I was hoping for. But then again, I think A Hat in Time is the epitome of quality over quantity.

I appreciate that. I would rather have one perfect cupcake than a bland, tasteless wedding cake. A Hat in Time is pretty damn perfect, bar a few missteps here and there. It’s charming, bright, colourful and it plastered a giant smile on my face throughout. After a few months of playing fairly serious games (and Paper Mario) it was definitely a welcome change. Hat Kid is bloody adorable, as is her game, and I would recommend it to anybody who wants some happy, silly fun. depends on who they are, he can be reserved and strict when dealing with students, but with students he is more familiar with and teachers he is friends with, he is a lot more relaxed and open

he reads, watches television, keeps up with politics and I heard that he owns a Steam account so I do wonder what kind of video games he is playing…

I do indeed, I’m not sure of the number but at least five of them are selfies

sometimes I am, and sometimes I am not - I think my friends are more ashamed and embarrassed of and by me having a TC, to be honest

I am hoping I have moved on from him after I have graduated; but, if I am in the area, may go and say a quick hello to him

I know that I am not in love with my TC, I think I just really really like him. this is the first time I have ever felt such intense and strong romantic feelings for someone, I could regard him as my ‘first love’, but who knows what the future holds.

Haven DVD Commentaries: 2.12 - Sins of the Fathers

Commentary with Eric Balfour, Lucas Bryant and Emily Rose.

As might be expected there is a lot of ridiculous randomness and interrupting and talking over each other*, interspersed with short-lived attempts to be serious and concentrate on the plot. It’s hard to capture everything that’s said, particularly the humour, but there are some interesting points in here I think. Happy to take questions if anything doesn’t make sense:)

[* Eric sounds a little more echoey than the other two, so I don’t know if he’s speaking from a different place which would maybe contribute to the talking over each other aspect.]

Eric: “Did you see how good my hair looked right there? My hair looks amazing. I actually gauge the quality of episodes by how good my hair looks” Lucas: “I think most people do.”

*General agreement on the fantasticness of the director for the episode, Lee Rose*

Lucas: “So this felt a bit different from shooting the finale for the first season, because then it was the finale finale, and we were almost crying every day. This episode is episode 12, the season finale, but we knew that we were going to shoot the Christmas episode after, so it sort of felt strangely anti-climactic.”

[As we see Audrey and Duke park up their cars and speak to each other on the street] Eric: “I remember at one point they were going to cut this scene out, and I was really glad they didn’t.” *agreement from Emily* Emily talks about the “temperature” between Audrey and Duke being important at this point and there’s discussion about how they have just found out that she is supposed to kill him, and reference to “or was it the other way around?” Lucas: “It changed a couple times didn’t it? Who was supposed to kill who?”

*Emily approves of her outfit*

As Audrey confronts Vince and Dave about knowing Lucy, Lucas talks about how he loves this scene because we get to see Audrey really go for it. Lucas: “I think people are always a little bit shocked when you are allowed to throw down, but I’m really glad that you got to. It’s beautiful.” Emily: “I think it took Richard off guard for a bit. It was a really cool scene to get to film.” Lucas: “I think the fans wanted to see you finally lose it. Like, why doesn’t someone just grab these guys and say what the ____ is going on. And you got to finally do that.”

Eric offers a theory that when Audrey disappears in between the Troubles she goes to a Sandals resort.

Emily: “I think what’s great about this episode as well is to see these two [Vince and Dave] at odds with each other. Usually we think they’re in cahoots, but now this episode when Audrey leaves, they’re at each other’s throats as well.” Eric: “Actually I’m kind of hoping for an episode where we find out that they’re not brothers, but they’re actually lovers.”

[As we see Vince give Audrey Lucy’s ring] Lucas: “Do you want to talk about this ring, Parker?” Emily: “This ring? Well I remember when they were talking to me prop-wise, it’s a bit reminisceint of the ring that you also have.” Eric: “Could they not afford a second ring? It’s the same ring?” Emily: “No it’s not the same ring.” There’s some joking about, maybe we could only afford the one ring, then Lucas starts to say “I think some people [fans] picked up that there might be something too those rings,” and then changes track with an “Oh my goodness,” as the screen cuts to a shirtless Duke. As Lucas and Emily joke about getting distracted, Eric talks over them to point out that it is a Falling Whistle’s necklace that Duke has.

[After Duke’s ‘Dad?’] Eric: Why do they always use the worst takes of every performance? I know that I did a better, ‘Dad?’”

[As the credits play] Eric: “Remember that there used to be different music that we all loved, and when we heard this we were all a little disappointed that this became the theme song? But now? I kind of love it.” *agreement from Emily* Lucas: “I dream this most nights. This is the sound track to my dreams.” Eric: “Do you have the deep house remix?” Emily: “You need to come up with that, DJ.” Eric: “Somebody already did, I think. It’s already out there.”

[As we see Audrey arriving (late) to the crime scene] Lucas: “So this is the first time we’ve seen each other on screen since that fated moment right? That thing that happened before.” Emily: “And you’re giving me grief.” Lucas: “Because I don’t know how to deal with my feelings. About … feelings.”

*general joking agreement about how Arlo McMartin is an awkward name to say*

[As Nathan is asking Audrey out to dinner] Emily: “Here’s a fun fact about this scene. There were some people who won a contest, and won the chance to drive all the way to our set and be background people for the day and so they are in the back by the cop cars because they won a contest and drove all the way out to Nova Scotia to be on set that day. Sorry, we probably should have talked about the specialness that just happened.” [As the view switches to the Rouge] Emily: “Oh my gosh look how good Eric Cayla made that rusty boat look.” Lucas: “Look how good Mr Balfour made that wifebeater look.” [Me: While I thoroughly agree with the sentiment, how is this an acceptable name for an item of clothing? If it’s not a vest can someone please invent a new name for it? kthanks.]

Emily: “And we got the opportunity to have a really well-known guest star who I have a really hard time pronouncing his name.” Eric: “I think they did such a good job, because we look so much like each other. He is actually a really good actor he just … doesn’t look like he could be in the same gene pool as me.” Emily: “Well but it was a choice, right? I remember when they were talking about casting him, they were saying they wanted to cast a young version of your dad.” Lucas: “So sci-fi fans were very happy to see Mr Battlestar.” Eric (surprised): “Oh is he on a ….?” Emily: “Yes, huge.” Eric: “Oh. See, nobody tells me anything.” Emily: “So that was a little sci-fi shout out. A meta sci-fi moment.”

Emily: “This is a story I hope they go down with more with you Eric; with your father feelings.” Lucas: “You’re very good at father feelings.” Emily: “I love it when I get to see your father feelings come out.” Eric: “I don’t think you want to.” [I think. There’s definitely a wry kind of ‘be careful what you wish for’ laugh] Emily: “Yeah but that initial impulse you’re having right now, we wanna see that.” Lucas: “Let it come out in your work.”

Lucas: “And I just want to mention that I love, and my wife loves Mr Balfour … I don’t need to get into that right now ‘cos I’ll get a little heated, but you, I think I’ve said this before, but I love to see how you are very funny. You’re a very funny man. This is a very funny scene, I think.” [Simon and Duke talking in the Rouge.]

[As we see Audrey and Nathan walk into the graveyard to talk to Kyle] Emily talks about how the order of the scenes changed and Lucas adds, “There were some people online who picked up on that, I was reading something,” where people were wondering about the transition between scenes, “and it’s absolutely true, that this was a scene that was cut from somewhere else at first.”

As Audrey is telling Kyle he needs to watch his mouth, Emily is talking about seeing the actor in the Tudors, but Eric interrupts her with an emphatic, “That was hot. I like when you say that ‘you need to watch your mouth mr’.”

As we see Arlo’s body in the coffin, Eric asks if the effects were all practical make up and Emily tells him Yes, then adds that they might have enhanced it in SFX.

As Audrey and Nathan are in the station, Emily and Lucas talk about always having weird stuff written in the files and joke about writing silly notes to each other.

[As Vince and Dave come into the station] Lucas; “Now, there was one of the greatest lines in that little scene, and it got cut out! What the what! After Vince and Dave come in and say ‘We heard blah blah …’ I say ‘Why do you guys even ask me questions?’ Remember?” Emily: “Yeah!” Eric: “They always cut out the best lines.” Emily jokes about how he represented Vince and Dave’s lines as ‘blah blah’ and Lucas jokes, “Well that’s kind of how I see the world.” [i.e. everyone else’s lines blurring into insignificance besides his own]

As we see the Rev. Emily talks about watching Immortals and seeing “Mr McHattie” turn up in the middle of the movie.

[As we see Simon telling Duke about Mrs Holloway’s camp fire story] Eric: “You can tell this was an early morning shot because my hair’s still wet. I must have got to work late.” Emily: “It all comes back to the hair Ladies and Gentlemen. He has a hair ritual in the morning.” As Eric is describing his hair-drying method, Emily adds some details and “And I get to see this every morning ladies and gentlemen, aren’t you jealous.”

As Nathan and Audrey are making eyes at each other in front of the computer screen Emily: “It was a fun scene to shoot.” Lucas: “It’s fun to get to do playful, physical comedy.” Emily: “Well especially with scenes like that because it’s not about what we’re saying, it’s about what’s not being said.”

[As Kyle is looking at the list of Troubled names with the red X] Eric: “Hey isn’t that down the street from where I live?” Lucas: “Yes. But don’t tell people though.”

[As Nathan is telling Audrey how his Trouble was triggered] Lucas: “See this is the scene that was cut from the other one. This is how it started before.” Eric wants to talk more about the list of Troubled names (and his idea that everything should look old like it’s from the 1800s and burnt around the edges), but Emily brings him back to this scene: “You know what’s funny though; he’s talking about how bad you are right now Duke. Or about how you guys had your bromance back in the day, he’s talking about your history.” Lucas: “I like that there was a reason.” *agreement from Eric* Lucas: “One of them. I’m sure we’ll learn many more. And just to talk about how amazing I am for a minute .. because we never touch on that ..” Eric: “We talk about how beautiful your eyes are all the time. Your sensitive, sensual blue eyes.” Lucas: “Oh thanks man.” Eric: “Your deep masculine voice.” Lucas: “No but this speech, this story changed like 90 times in the last 7 hours before we shot it. Remember?” Emily: “Oh my gosh, that’s right! You had a whole page of dialogue and it got changed, and finally it was at the point where you were just like, it needs to be this, cut it to what you need it to be.” Lucas: “My tiny brain can only handle five changes.” Emily: “You did a great job.” Lucas: “Well and I think the story itself, the last one that was decided upon, was great. But it’s just funny how such a lynchpin piece can be changed so many times right up to the moment.”

As Audrey and Nathan walk up to the Fresnel grave, there is some discussion about the pronunciation (Emily having initially pronounced the S) and then about how the interesting part about this styrofoam gravestone is that Emily’s cell phone and sides [which google tells me are the pages of the script that will be shot that day] are hiding underneath it. Emily: “Let’s talk about how many hiding places does Emily have in a scene for her cell phone and her sides.”

Emily: “It was raining a lot this day.” Lucas: “It was raining a lot this whole episode.” Eric: “What are you talking about? It was raining a lot this whole season.”

[As we see all the ghosts walk up to Aurey and Nathan in the middle of the graveyard] Lucas: “So this ghost stuff was fun because we would shoot me seeing them, and then we would shoot Emily’s perspective where she couldn’t see any of them. And so I had to act like they were there.” Eric: “I think it would have been cool if all of those people were in their funeral clothes that they were buried in.” Emily: “I guess the idea was that they were all in what they died in.” Eric: “Yeah. I don’t get it.” Lucas: “Balfour, we have to explain how much to you? All of it?” Eric: “Yeah, pretty much.”

Lucas picks up on the American flag by one of the graves, “a very important prop to convince people that we are in the states and not in Canada where we actually shoot.” Between them Emily and Lucas say that Novia Scotia means New Scotland, Lucas adding “I have no idea why it’s called that.”

[And then the three characters are coming to stand under the trees by the bronco] Emily: “Here we had one of my favourite blooper moments of all time that I hope they see in the blooper reel. Not only did it take us a good two hours to do this little tiny scene, because water kept dropping on our faces and they had to shake the tree to get the raindrops out, but Lucas has one of his shining blooper moments where he has to say Arlo McMartin. And having trying to film the scene for an hour, we were dying about all of the rain and then he couldn’t say that and we almost couldn’t complete the scene.” Lucas: “Yeah. And it was funny, and also quite tense. Because people were like ‘guys come on, really; you have a 20 second window of no rain to get this out.” Eric: “We almost stopped that day, remember? We almost shut down production.”

And then they discuss how they did have to shut down production one time in the season, the first time they’ve had to do that. Lucas: “Of all those rainy days, there was only one that we got, screwed.” Emily: “Because you can only shut down production if there’s thunder and lightning that could zap the generator. Not when it’s a monsoon and raining horizontally at your face.” Lucas: “Right. We don’t worry about people, we worry about the generator.”

[As Nathan comes back to Audrey and Duke there is a general ‘here it comes’ (about Lucas’s blooper] Lucas: “Look at Balfour trying not to laugh.” Emily [laughing]: “I know!” Lucas: “And me, trying not to laugh.” Lucas: “Thank god Mr Nick Campbell comes back.” [Garland] Emily: “This was a really cool thing, having Nick Campbell back.” Lucas: “Yup. I love my dad and missed him all season.” Eric: “Dude’s awesome.” Emily: “And your scene was incredible together. I came to set early to see it.”

Emily: “Look how good your truck looks.” Lucas: “Look how good this whole show looks. Let’s talk about Mr Eric Cayla.”

[As we see Garland and Nathan talk] Emily: “I love this scene, it makes me so happy. It’s the kind of scene I want to put a warm blanket around me and sit and just watch it happen.” Lucas: “He’s so easy. Real, fun, serious.”

Emily: “I remember there was a big question about what shirt to put Nick in, because they wanted everybody to be in their clothes that they died in, so when you look at the explosion of the rocks in the last episode when he exploded, the back side of all those rocks have this plaid on them, and it was a big problem because they needed to be able to green screen the ghost stuff later on and it had strips of green in it and so they were concerned about that and were thinking about switching the shirts, but it looks like they made it happen.”

Lucas: “I’ve probably talked about this before, but we are so blessed to have guys like Nick and Richard and John.” *Agreement from Eric and Emily.* Emily: “They enrich the story so much.” Lucas: “Absolutely.” Emily: “And this is just a great example of a scene that’s written well and acted well, and you can just sit and enjoy it.”

Lucas tells Eric to talk about his ride, nothing that having the steering wheel on the wrong side confused some people. Eric: “Oh yeah, this is a landrover that was built in the UK.” Emily: “That’s a request that I would have for next year is that I actually get to have a cool car.

[As Audrey and Duke spot the red X on the road and walk up to the house] Emily: “OK this house was creepy. I went up in it and it had an entire attic with children’s drawings and writing on the walls, and there were these secret staircases.” Lucas: “You think children are creepy?” Emily: “It was a huge attic of old art, with children’s scribbling on the walls.” [There’s a little pause and then] Emily: “The owner was really great, she was really sweet.” *laughter from Eric and Lucas* Eric: “Nice save!” Emily: “That’s the coolest part about filming in Chester, there’s all these old houses. Our producer stays in a house with all these weird staircases in it, it’s just weird. And this town has one of the oldest taverns in North America.”

[As Duke and the Rev. talk on the veranda outside the house Audrey has just gone inside] Emily: “How did you feel about this new direction in the relationship between the Rev. and the Duke? It was very unsettling to me.” Lucas: “I was wondering why Duke is protecting the Rev. in this scene, what’s going on?” Eric: “In this scene? He wasn’t protecting the Rev.” Lucas: “Well why didn’t he tell Audrey that he was there?” Eric: “Because he was afraid that he would hurt Audrey, so he felt no choice but to go with him.” Lucas: “So he was actually protecting Audrey?” Eric: “Yeah, he was protecting Audrey.” Lucas: “Right.” [Me: Don’t you know by now Lucas? Duke is always protecting Audrey]

[As Audrey and Nathan talk to Kyle’s wife outside their house] Emily: “This was one of my favourite things to do here, for the first time Audrey and Nathan in this small town actually acting like they’re someone else. … And that’s a big thing we always wrestle with on Haven, is the size of the town. It’s a small town but yet it’s big enough that not everybody knows each other.” Eric: “Yeah, well I think we get confused being where we shoot the show because the fact is everyone *does* know each other. You have to get pretty far outside of town before people don’t know your middle name.”

As Kyle’s wife is walking through the woods Lucas talks about how she was having to walk through the mud wearing heels, it had just rained, and we learn that Emily thought “for days” that the actor was really pregnant. Emily: “I’m an idiot.”

Emily: “These poor background guys; they show up for the day to be part of Haven, and we tell them to haul people out of vans, and carry them.” Eric: “That guy was already passed out and they re-chloroformed him.”

Emily: “This was just a really interesting episode because there was a lot of, doing the scenes with the people there to see them, and then doing them without them there.” Eric: “Yeah, and I actually had fun doing the scene over and over with Stephen McHattie there and then with him not there and just be talking to air.” Lucas: “Some of these people were from this town, and it was a totally different experience shooting there this year because people had seen the show, and all of a sudden it was a show on TV and they I think for the most part liked the show and liked how it portrayed their town so people were much more excited to have us back this season and I felt totally embraced by the community, and they were super helpful despite us getting in their way all the time. It was a really nice feeling.” Eric: “This was my first year living in the town, because last year I lived in Halifax., and besides the drunk lady who would show up on my doorstep at midnight, I had a great time. This is a perfect opportunity to give a shout out to Nicky Butler who owns Nicky’s Inn, my favourite place in the world. I love that woman.” Lucas: “Fantastic mother of us all in Chester.”

[The scene outside the shed with the Rev. and Simon and Garland] Lucas: “So this is the longest scene ever…. There’s all sorts of things going on, people are seeing ghosts, people are not seeing ghosts, he’s realising that he’s Troubled, and how can we save him - it was mental. And we’re all standing, for the most part, still. Emily: “So then what you end up doing is shooting it in directions, like pieces of the pie. You shoot one side and then just go around the circle, shooting all that’s happening.” Lucas: “Right. And I think Mr Balfour did a stand-up job of selling this whole scene with his dilemma. And we sort of all revolved around his issues - as we in real life do too.” Eric: “Yeah, mostly about my hair.” Lucas: “But it was fantastic because there was not really much else to hold on to but I think Eric was fantastic in this scene and it all worked in the end and it was kind of amazing.” Eric: “I thought this music worked really well.” Lucas: “And although it looks sunny there, this was the day we had to shut down - because the generator was going to get wet.” Emily: “It felt like a snow day at school, I was kind of giddy about it all.” Lucas also mentions the issue with the rain and the ghosts; that they couldn’t have the ghosts with their shirts getting wet because that wouldn’t make any sense when they can walk through gravestones and can’t pick up whiskey glasses. And also makes the point about how rain typically doesn’t show up on screen. And Emily mentions that they had a tarpaulin covering them, so they were dry but then that creates its own issues because you can hear the rain hitting it.

[As we see Duke’s eyes turn silver] Eric: “Whoa, great eyes! I hadn’t seen this part before. That looks crazy.” Lucas wonders if the effect is different from the one he original saw, but then he and Emily decide it’s just because they’re watching it on a better TV now. Lucas: “Shawn has a terrible TV at his house.”

[As Simon and Garland fade away] Eric: “This whole thing feels very much like the movie Ghost. I wish Whoopi Goldberg was there.” Lucas: “Me too. I wish we had a pottery studio.” Eric: “Yep.” Lucas: “Yep. We haven’t seen Duke’s pottery studio have we? Actually, maybe in season three when we see Nathan’s home, we get to see the pottery studio.”

[As Audrey picks up the gun and arrests everyone] Eric: “Your favourite line.” Emily: “I so did not want to say that line. There was a note about we had to show that Audrey was in control…. I played it down, I didn’t know how else to do it.” Lucas: “I think you did a very stand up job, Parker.”

[As we see Vince and Dave arguing] Emily: “I often wonder how they do these scenes without really knowing what the thorn in their side is. But you guys have a little bit of that too. Well you know it now, but you had to play that opposition with each other without really knowing what the history was.” Lucas: “Right. Well, we just went off real life basically.” *general laughter* Eric: “Well except in real life you’re usually upset that I won’t cuddle with you, and that’s what creates most of the tension.”

[As we see Audrey getting kidnapped] Emily: “Oh gosh I did not want to get tasered. I fought for every other way of getting knocked out possible. I wanted to get hit over the head with a gun. … So now we’re coming up on the end of the finale that actually changed pretty drastically.” Lucas: “Changed a million ways from Sunday.” And they both tell each other how they can’t talk about what it was originally going to be Eric: “We can talk about one thing, when we get to it.”

[As we see Nathan come into the Rouge] Lucas: “There were a couple takes of this where I came in shouting, and my daughter was outside and heard me screaming ‘where is she?’ and then I just hear ‘Why is Daddy yelling?’ so my wife had to hustle her outside.”

[As Duke and Nathan start to fight] Emily: “So disappointing, we thought they were actually on the road to being good friends.”

As we see the tattoo on Nathan’s arm, there is a general ‘!! What does that mean?’

[As the credits start to roll] Eric: “So originally, you never heard that gunshot. That was something added, I think that was a Scott Shepherd idea. Which I’ve got to give him credit for; that was a really fun idea.”

September ‘20

Paradise Killer

Putting it out there front and centre that I know some of the folks involved in creating this, and clearly I’m devoid of sufficient integrity to be impartial. You know, it’s best to get these things out there, with the internet being what it is.

It’s a whodunnit set in Paradise, with your character having been brought back from exile and tasked with solving who’s responsible for the mass-murder of the island’s core council. There’s a clear set up with one guy already due to take the fall, but it quickly becomes apparent that the island’s populous of weird deities - who perhaps have too much time on their hands - clearly have more of a stake in this than they’d like you to know. You’re left to investigate at your own pace, poking around crime scenes and places of interest, but also soaking up the island and its vibe as a whole. Getting reacquainted with its residents is a massive chunk of this, and if their out-there names, colourful outfits, and eccentric behaviours weren’t enough to draw you in, there’s more serious manners such as allegiances and motives to start peeling back the layers of. Titbits of info gleaned will often give you the opportunity to eke more out of someone else, and although the game does a great job of subtly nudging you to where loose ends might best be chased down, you’re given the freedom and ultimate responsibility on when to start wrapping things up at trial.

Given the potential for disorder in its narrative structure, the game’s job in cataloging all of your gathered information is crucially neat in its execution. The free rein that allows you to be as orderly and meticulous as you choose is welcome, as is the gentle push towards the truth of things. But there’s also just enough space to sink into convenient falsehoods - even to present them at trial and make them stick, if you can pass on that conviction - and it’s this freedom that really sets it apart from its contemporaries. Helping this is a fully realised island you can move about in and investigate, rather than doled out chunks of exposition by chains of talking head sequences. More salacious secrets are typically locked behind puzzles or specific items, but there’s also a particularly inviting nature to the architecture that suggests playful acrobatics - dashing, double-jumping and the like - be used to explore out-of-reach areas.

The look is tinged in pinks and blues, giving a suitably welcoming glow to Paradise. It’s warmth is helped massively by the soundtrack that runs throughout it, bringing pleasant, jazzy saxophones and subtle, warm electronics into its city-pop inspired stable. There’s a great voice running through its veins too - one that operates in its unspoken thoughts, the descriptions of its collectables, even the interface and the sub-headers as you enter new areas - just about damn everywhere. It’s smart, it’s cynical, and it’s snappy, and is a regular factor in keeping a smile on your face even in the moments that get closest to being downtime. Bias be damned! I can say, hand-on-heart, that it’s a game that not just nestles in comfortably among its peers, but stands tall among them.

Moon

Cult status can be a double edged sword. For anything cult - movies, albums, games, you name it - there’s that risk that if put under a modern lens, they can be painfully of their time. Cherished by those that were there, perhaps, but impenetrable - or even worse, alienating - for those without that context. Previously a Japan-only PS1 title, Moon has held such status for 20+ long years, but on its return, lets you know very quickly that a lot of what it had to say was timeless.

Its sending-up of RPG tropes is pretty spot on - the game-within-a-game that your character boots up got a big belly laugh out of me almost immediately, and then leads into a montage of a hero’s journey through a world that you’re then later transported into to pick up the pieces. See, the ‘hero’ in the game is kind of a jerk - barging into people’s homes, taking things out of their cupboards, killing all of the wildlife, and so on - and while this likely sounds very familiar, Moon prompts you to remove that filter of normal game behaviour, and instead asks that you try and be a bit more conscionable and pleasant. Acts of kindness to others are repaid in love, a tangible currency that grows your love level, allowing you to spend more time in its world before you need to rest and begin your day’s busy-bodying anew. Observing the routines of the world’s inhabitants is key to making good on its many grievances, and although these are straightforward enough at the start, some of the later challenges relied on some more tenuous thinking - to which, I’ll put my hands up and say that I turned to a walkthrough. These more patience-testing moments might have been a good way to pad things out in ‘97, however it’s a bit steeper an ask today, when I daresay most people will be visiting this as more of a curiosity. Accepting a helping hand doesn’t stand in the way of these scenarios delivering on the charm, surprise, or humour they originally aimed for, though. Labelling it a parody or a spoof might work as a descriptive shortcut, but it’s never mean spirited, and clearly loves the subjects it pokes fun at - there’s a wonderfully self-effacing humility throughout it.

Given Final Fantasy 7 - often cited as a common entry point for many modern western fans of JRPGs - didn’t even arrive in Europe until after this originally released, it’s not hard to understand why it wasn’t considered for localisation at the time. The audience certainly didn’t exist at scale, and simply wouldn’t have had the gaming experience or vocabulary to appreciate it. Not only can we now better appreciate it as the tongue-in-cheek love letter it is, but the message of compassion and thoughtfulness is something that’s more essential today than arguably ever before.

Spelunky 2

This was always on my radar as a likely ‘game of the generation’ contender. I’ve been playing the original game on and off now for around 8 years - it’s followed me as a regular part of my gaming diet across 4 different platforms, and crucially, all the way up until the night before this finally landed on my PS4. Without getting too philosophical about it, it’s a very important game to me. Despite all of the time playing it, thinking about it, talking about it, or even reading the gosh darned book about it, I never once thought to assume I had the answer for what would make a fitting sequel. Thankfully, the team behind it had more ideas, and the faith in their convictions.

All of the crucial components of the original are here in abundance, and added to with a restrained modesty. Its randomly generated levels are more complex, and offer more distinct ways of hiding secrets, all while a subtle but slick graphical overhaul does great work in making them look more organic than ever before. More complex fluid physics allows for more transformative ways of opening up levels, and mounts might add some quirky new dynamics to things, but crucially, things under the hood beside this remain largely the same.

Perhaps more importantly, Spelunky 2 understands the fervent player base centred around the original game, and uses their knowledge and familiarity to challenge them anew with clinical precision. Things are just similar enough: the title screen, the tutorial, many of the enemies, and the stages that you find them in - they’re tweaked, yes, but still familiar. On top though, there’s enough that’s new, or changed in a minute yet specific way that makes it very clear that things are going to be uniquely dangerous all over again, and that your muscle memory is more of a liability than a crutch. The curve of learning the game - understanding and tempering its dangers, and the slow, cautious, pulling back the curtain of its newer secrets - is still pitched in the same utterly compelling way as before, though. Rather than being harder outright, or just more lumped on top, it finds a way to make new players and familiar faces alike to learn to play Spelunky all over again, and it’s a total joy to have that opportunity. It’s everything I didn't realise I wanted in a sequel, and it’s breathed a new lease of life into a game that I wasn’t even bored with in the first place.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 Remastered

The original THPS was proper lightning in a bottle stuff; while its countless sequels eventually drained every good idea bone dry, and it left countless half-baked spin-offs in its wake, it’s hard to be mad, or surprised, when the original formula was so potent. Underpinned by a brilliant combo system that called back to arcade-style score chasing, in tandem it also nailed the kind of goal-based mission objectives that became so common after it. This is before you even get on to the way that skateboarding’s irreverence, fashion, and music were curated and presented in such a way that they left a mark on an entire generation. Sports titles are often glossed over from a critical perspective, but there is no escaping the quality and impact of this series.

This remaster tries to capture it at its zenith - and although they’re arguably off by a game or two, depending on who you talk to - it’s generally welcome that some of the ideas from later games are pared back. What it does with these first two games is for my money, the gold standard of what a remaster should do - it makes them look and feel like you imagined they did at the time; smooth, detailed, and responsive. Please, don’t make me go back and look at what the originals actually did look like, because I don’t think my poor brain could take it. The kitchen sink has been thrown at everything surrounding the game, with more relevant and diverse skaters brought into the fold, menus upon menus hiding a wealth of additional challenges, and a soundtrack that celebrates the older, punkier roots of the game, but also shines a light on some musical features that are perhaps more relevant to today’s youth. It’s all handled with a surprising elegance.

It’s a great new way to introduce the series to people, and also a nice outlet for old hands, with my only real criticism being that I had blasted through both of the original tours within a day of dropping the disc in my system. Yes, I could chase high scores endlessly, and yes, there’s a park builder and an abundance of multiplayer modes - but if you’ve finished these games before and just want to revisit them with a new lick of paint, don’t be surprised when it dries out fast.

Some Lord of Shadows Thoughts, In No Particular Order

I think Jace’s name is in this book more than Kieran’s which is obnoxious. Also every appearance of his was prefaced by a multi-sentence description of how gorgeous he was. This did not stop even when he showed up purely to be a dick to Kit. I officially hate book Jace now. He’s drunk the Kool Aid and he’s part of the Shadowhunter establishment and he’s insufferable so thanks for that book. ‘

Shadowhunters are a cult. Full stop. Sometimes it seems like the book has started to recognize this but then it backtracks and goes back to glorifying them. They’re so rich, they’re so pretty! Like, yeah, but they’re also super racist and hugely regressive and directly responsible for the suffering of thousands. Sure, they do some good along the way but so does Salvation Army, they’re still BAD. Look past all the glitter and propaganda and they’re just magical thugs who haven’t gotten past the middle ages and at this rate never will. The Blackthorn kids are better off without them.

Kit is probably the most sympathetic person in the entire book and I do want him to run away and set up a pawn shop in Ohio? Save him from everyone but especially Jace.

At one point his face was described as angular though, which makes me wonder if CC has seen a fifteen year old ever. You do it once, it’s justifiable, but most teenagers have a bad case of the baby face and saying other wise is ridiculous. This cheekbone addiction is getting out of hand.

This book was so ridiculously heterosexual. Like, just such a pervasive case of unfortunate and tragic heterosexuality. So casual. So pointless. Magnus first gets brought up as “glittery”. One character thinks in all seriousness that you only get one dad. Gwyn is painfully straight for no apparent reason when faeries should and previously have been all sorts of flexible. It’s just... bad.

The centurions are all kind of awful and I didn’t bother to learn their names.

That being said, I did like the focus on Diana. She’s beautiful and amazing and brave and I love her.

This is just blatant apologism for what happened to Anselm Nightshade. You set up a situation like that, you deal with the consequences of it, you don’t wimp out.

The kids went to Faerie together and I am glad for that. They did just kill of Iarlath with no fanfare, but now his headcanon bf are chilling together and we got some follow up on Malcolm’s faerie ties so I’m not too mad about that.

“Her old tutor, Katerina.” God, where’s my Katerina spinoff. She has gotten no lines ever and because of that I love her.

I do like anything with faeries very much but it could afford to be a little less fantasy and a little less chaos theory. The rest is just an issue of misplaced expectation. Obviously I like some of my interpretations better (killing girls is so stupid and outdated, an actual curse dooming him to have fifty sons all the time is maybe a twist) but other than that, nice worldbuilding, solid writing.

Faeries! Gosh, I just love them so much. Faeries all the time, that what I want.

The Unseelie King is super interesting. His kids are more trite, but hey, I love them anyways.

On a related note, have I mentioned how much Gwyn just wants his big dumb teenagers to be safe and happy? Kieran and Mark aren’t even twenty and they need to take care of each other and not die. What a quality Faerie Dad.

Some times these kids act dumb but i do not begrudge them it on account of them being children.

The book got good about halfway through, which I appreciated. Kieran my sweet bratty boy, Nene the enigma, the courts, this is some good stuff I appreciate.

What I did not appreciate was the killing off of Arthur. Like, come on. You’ve already done a disservice by magicking up your mental illness, you don’t have to kill him off too. A much more straight forward solution would have used the fact that Malcolm and Annabel were technically married, have his death revive her, then have confused Annabel and her angry zombie husband coming after the Institute, then Annabel realizing what was really going on and turning on Malcolm. Less in between steps. Failing that, ancient aunt they mentioned last book.

Mark, Miach, darling, in fairness, the Seelie Queen’s lover very much did kidnap you. She was kidnap complicit. Don’t be trusting her. She absolutely had Sebastian’s baby.

Memory loss plots are rather boring, but I recognize they do something for some people, so it might just be a cup of tea situation. Enjoy your memory loss then, friends.

The Kieran/Mark/Cristina plot is juicy and I do like that but I want More Diana and Helen and Aline back and Answers first, you know?

One of the downsides of these books being about Shadowhunters is that it always comes down to the Shadowhunter heroes fighting and killing the irrational villainous Downworlder hordes which is Unfortunate. That conflict with Barnabas could have gone so much better.

People need to stop trying to brainwash Kit with this Herondale stuff. People don’t go around calling me by my great-great great grandmother’s name and expect me to sit down and take it. Sure, we’re technically related, but that’s not how convention or basic politeness works. Your name is what you are raised with and more importantly it’s what you choose. His name is Kit and he’s a Rook until he decides, on his own without the constant pressure of adults, to be something else.

As an extension of that? All these callbacks to the other book? They’re getting old and frankly more than a little annoying.

Jessamine died in 1878. Edgar Allan Poe died in 1849. I’m telling you guys, the timeline just doesn’t line up. She wasn’t even born when Malcolm was young and building his house.

Kieran is a very impulsive boy who is already too invested in his Shadowhunter bf and gf. I don’t make the rules.

I tried not to read too much into the Disaster Children literally burning down a church and having a weird intimate moment but they really are a mess. No laws, no holy lands, nothing but family, and nothing comes before family. I’m much more invested in them when they’re tearing down the establishment and making terrible toxic Wicked Powers choices.

AIRMED WAS THE DAUGHTER OF MANNAN. This is basic people. Do your research.

My Diana theories are more or less confirmed which I appreciate, thank you very much.

I do very much wish they’d at least had the decency to leave bby Morgenstern a bby, that or go all the way and age him a few decades so you had a fifty something year old claiming to be Clary’s nephew. Much better than this cliche storm.

I recognize that Annabel got a short shift in life, but so did Malcolm, frankly. The fact that he gets a life of torment and a horrible death at the hands of one he loved while she gets to wander off and live happily is a little concerning to me. Why do Downworlders not get to be happy? Downworlders, and Arthur Blackthorn, apparently, aren’t allowed to live nice, non-tragic lives, but pretty young Shadowhunters can get away with anything. At this point I would have preferred a disappointing end for Annabel. Get that good tragedy going. The Blackthorn’s clearly have a bad case of the Gothics they need to fulfill.

Oh. OH. There we go. There’s the Blackthorn drama I crave.

So that’s about five hours. My record holds. The book wasn’t bad, it was just sooooo long. I feel like it could have used a ruthless editor with a really good grasp of the classics to clean things up a bit. Didn’t make me laugh as much, but that might just be a result of my evolving sense of humour. Drama got good nearer the last half of the book. There was some nice stuff in there. Overall, not a waste of five hours, and I’m not mad. Just please, someone de-brainwash these Shadowhunter children. They’re in a cult. Someone needs to tell them that they’re in a cult. Save Kit, he’s getting pulled in as well.
