What did you base Alastors Nox Magia off of? Why type of magic is it and where did you get the ideas for a good ass fanfic?

The answer is sort of a long story that I suppose begins with my first exposure to Hazbin Hotel in general, during a particularly doomed D&D campaign where my character basically acted exactly like Charlie did in the pilot:

Granted, Fianna is not anything like Charlie at all, but the DM found it funny enough to send me the gif above and then everyone got distracted for about 5 minutes while they started meming.

The next day I watched the show and was completely hooked!

I started looking into the Wiki to get a greater understanding of the world shown, read the comics (like all 20 pages hahaha), and listened to Addict while working on prompts for Charlastor Week 2022, taking a break from my regular manuscript I'd been working on for a few years (stay tuned for updates soon on that one!). I had about a month so I decided to try my hand at smaller short stories, since some of the authors I idolize are so good at short fiction, and conveying strong emotions in just a few thousand words.

I watched and rewatched the Pilot, studying the characterizations there as well as thinking about funny and unexpected scenarios the characters could get into while dealing with the concept of redemption and how to make it work (needless to say that the fact that they already had it happen was... unexpected. I have thoughts on that but will put a pin in that for now to avoid getting too distracted from your question!).

I can't remember which rewatch it was that I picked up on an interesting exchange between Charlie and Alastor that turned into a whole mess that would consume me to this day:

She tries to put a limitation on his ability to do too much, and I wondered if that could lead to a sort of interesting power-play between them (because in the end this is the part of their relationship that is fundamentally interesting - they're both powerful people with opposing moralities, having to work together to acheive a common goal). Basically, because Charlie's not precise with her language, she ends up basically not controlling Alastor at all. Which works out in its way, because she hides from her deeper wellspring of power with the aid of a gentle persona.

I liked the idea of something deeper between them and within themselves - and with them being opposing forces, I wanted to work with the idea of Alastor being associated with "night" and "dark", versus Charlie being associated with "sunlight" and "rainbows".

Shadow and Flame, only a bit less Lord of the Rings and a bit more sexy.

Nox Magia , the "night" magic, follows basic arcane principles that I've picked up on through the long and involved process of being a massive nerd and reading a lot of stuff.

For writing magic, I like looking at basic logic structures and hovering somewhere between harder and softer magic. My other manuscript that is premiering this year will be discussing some differing types of magic systems as well, if you enjoy reading Riddle and my other works, I hope you enjoy those as well!

But as for the story itself, it wasn't meant to be a story about a man falling in love... it's the story of a man being dragged into love, kicking and screaming about it. 🦌🌈

To Alastor the Hotel is about control, and his experience there is just a game not to be taken too seriously. Charlie is also about control, or rather, trying to find a way to control without breaking everything with her terrible strength.

Alastor embraces his strength, while she hides from it, and he finds that contradictory instinct in her interesting, so he comes up with the idea of a game to teach her some magic that might help her. But as with all magic, intent governs everything (even when you don't realize), and the spells he's teaching are telling a particular kind of story - you can preview what's happening in the chapter titles that have the runes' names! 🍷

Proxies Headcanons! [Puppet Strings Lore Dump]

Hey! I have an unfortunate confession to make; I used to really like Fanon Masky when I was like 9 years old. Thankfully I finally watched Marble Hornets and realised what the fuck I'd been missing out. I used to love Fanon Toby too but maybe about two years ago I completely rewrote him after a sudden change of heart.

Did Hoody even have a fanon? I don't think he had a personality beyond being Masky's best friend. That's unfortunate seeing as how he's my favourite one out of the pair.

Anyways, the Proxies have always been such an interesting concept to me. I know that they don't exist in canon, but seriously it's an entertaining thing to imagine a sitcom between the Proxies and Slenderman.

So, without further ado, let's get into it!

Proxies Headcanons

-The 'Proxies' are the employees (only slaves like 50% of the time) of the Slenderman. They do have a greater purpose for being 'hired'; to serve as human energy for the Operator to feed off of. That's why the MOST unstable ones get picked to be proxies, since he feeds off of trauma and emotional energy.

-They do get paid, but only when the Slenderman takes over. Sadly he's aware of why they're here but accepts the fact that there's nothing he can really do about it since the Operator's fed on them so much that they'll basically die if they stop being Proxies (if the Operator doesn't kill them first). It's a lose-lose situation, unfortunately.

-As I said prior; they're the most mentally unstable in the whole Mansion. There are six of them; Rouge, X-Virus/Cody, Kate, Masky/Tim, Hoody/Brian, and Toby. Rouge is the oldest (due to the fact that in her original story she was almost married and almost a mother), and Toby is the youngest.

-Many of the Residents avoid them, especially Masky and Hoody. As they're the most well-known Proxies, they're generally known for being violent and ill-mannered towards others besides each-other and Toby. Although they get closer to everyone eventually, most of the residents heavily disliked them when they first arrived.

-Slender has no idea how they got here, although he has an idea of why they could be here. He's got no idea what happened to Toby, Kate, Rouge, or what the hell a Marble Hornets is. No matter how many times they explain what Slender supposedly did to them, he just doesn't remember as Charles wasn't conscious when it happened.

Although (I believe, its been a while) Marble Hornets take place in 2006, they sort of departed from the Labrinth and returned in 2009 after Masky and Hoody find themselves homeless and basically just drug addicts. They put up with Slender as they have no other place to turn to.

-They mainly go on Political Missions; such as assassinating a target in the Underworld, or they kill actual people in the real world. These usually consist of people who get too close to finding out about the Pastas, cultists, and basically just any random target Slender picks out for them.

-They're sort of their own family, as they share rooms in the same corridor which is quite far away from the other Residents. Rouge actually has her own home, but the other four live in the Mansion.

-They all magically have access to drugs. Nobody knows and nobody asks why, but whenever they need a fix, all they need to do is go to Hoody's room and pay $5.

-Speaking of Hoody, he has selective mutism, and even then he rarely talks. He only verbally communicates with the other Proxies, and doesn't speak to anyone else at all. Sometimes he'll randomly chime in to a conversation Toby and Masky are having and laugh as the two jump.

He's just a bit of a goofy guy, really.

-Wondering why I'm exclusively calling them Masky and Hoody? Well, I know it's sort of implied that Tim and Brian have DID and that Masky and Hoody are simply their alter egos, but in this AU they're more like personas that the Operator made up for them. He didn't like how disobedient Tim and Brian are, so when the Operator takes over he personally remolds their personalities so that they're more subservient. It sounds confusing but I'm trying

-I'm going to make a separate post for Tim and Brian, but a little backstory is that the two of them have known each other since Kindergarten and have grown up together since. They're best friends and their bond is just so strong that nobody can ever really come between them.

Although they're seen hanging out with Toby a lot, Toby is aware of the fact that Tim and Brian are the original duo.

-Masky is the unofficial group leader of the Proxies, and everyone else just kind of accepts that. He's a cool guy and does know how to take charge, however he's always incredibly rebellious to the Slenderman's orders, which leaves Toby to step up every time they fuck up real bad.

-Slenderman sometimes accompanies them. He doesn't help, he just watches from a corner and sometimes jumps out at them to scare them. It's a favourite pass time of his. He will help them out on occasion, as keep in mind he is a low-level God.

-Dr. Smiley and Nurse Ann's makeshift Hospital is basically their second home. Since they get injured so much on all of their missions (totally not due to Masky going against the direct orders), they often all come together to get treated with whatever nasty injury they get from their most recent endeavour.

-Hoody and Slender, both people who don't talk very often, easily understand each other. It's sort of an inside joke that they can telepathically talk to each other. It's basically the only form of a relationship they have considering Hoody's very wary of him.

-Masky hates cheesecake. And crayons. And children. And Slenderman (although when it's Charles they're relationship is a bit better). The Masky in this AU would fucking HATE fanon Masky.

Cheesecake is Masky's least favourite food. He'd rather eat a pile of dog shit. Lazari thought this was funny and made sure to include a panel of him eating Cheesecake in every comic that she makes.

aaaaaa - i completely agree!!! i have, over my lifetime, had 3 dogs and 5 cats! currently, i do not have a pet, but i do debate getting one from time to time. i am leaning more towards cat given my work schedule - i'm in my cat era!

as a sag mc person, i have come to the conclusion that i likely will never have a consistent career - the pluto conjunct mc from my 9h and opposite jupiter in my 3h certainly won't be of help on that matter either. so my charts are a bit of a bad explain when it comes to career planning. my plan is that there is no plan but to make money and enjoy what i do whilst doing so (that's such a sag mc thing to say lol). i have talked about my mc chart before so i will link that!

aside from reading and the occult - i love art. i went to art school for photorealistic graphite drawings! but now i am rather interested in knitting, crocheting, and cross-stitching (right now i have made a pattern for a lake side sunset and i am making that - i'm about 810 stitches in).

i had a holiday break when i was in sixth grade and my mother and i got snowed in. the snow was not the funny / best part of this it was the fact that the power went out and i had a school project to do. in sixth grade all the history classes had you build a medieval shield or a castle. i built a castle basically in lamp light and whilst eating cookies. it was a rather large cardboard box medieval castle - painted grey and black with a functional portcullis.

UGHHHH I DISCOVERED MY FAVORITE TACO PLACE. that's my favorite memory for this year. it's like a local shack lol. but they have so much good stuff though - their milkshakes are so good AND THEY SELL ALLIGATOR. i have never had alligator until this year lol.

spirituality & the occult

i have been intuitively inclined all my life; i'm "claircognizant" - i have always known things that i really shouldn't. ex: as a child (3 or 4 years old), i would pose in photos with my pointer finger flush to my cheekbone - my grandmother freaked out when she saw that because that's the same pose my great grandmother (my namesake) use to do. it's not signs, it's more like random thoughts coming into my mind that aren't mine? that probably isn't the finest description - but it's the best way i can describe it.

tarot i'm nearing a decade, astrology i was introduced to when i was 6 or 7, and the matrix i am learning live right alongside you as i post (so since the first wyrd web post)!

i have talked about the first part before - for astrology, it was the pandemic that reawakened my love and passion for astronomy, especially the asteroids because i saw people were not all that informed on the myths behind them. as for tarot, my grandmother gave me her mother's tarot deck in middle school and i have practiced ever since! for the web - the matrix is newer to me but has a close relationship with tarot, so, naturally, i am interested! i continue because i have a natural curiosity for what makes us "us" - i feel like all these tools can help us to reflect on who we are and why we are the way we are and that is just beautiful to me. a spiritual journey is never complete! no one masters any of these things - we just level up and learn new things as we go (i.e. space is infinite; how can you be a master at astrology? there are thousands of nuisances to astrology that will always need exploring)!

let's see - tarot is the first tool that i actively used and promoted to others (like i started with astrology but only read my own chart - where as tarot i have been reading for others for a while now (almost a decade)). most recently i picked up lenormand (which i haven't seen many people talk about). i resonate with nearly all the tools i use. the one that i feel like i am still getting use to though is runes (like the fact that mine is dice and a deck makes it tricky to me lol).

i have talked about my origins in both studies before, take a look at the other questions because its up there. as for the second part, in my opinion i don't see mastery as a possibility, only high competence and experience. as for advice ALWAYS question what you read and ALWAYS look into the qualifications of who you are learning from. if they can't tell you their source or their accreditation, then they aren't someone you should be learning from. spend time with each of your studies and don't be afraid to spend a long time on small portions.

for spiritual journey guidance - always start your study where your interest lies and stay away from google unless you are looking up credibility or physical (book) resources. for general life advice, be kind - be you and be that well. recognize that no one is perfect and you can never really know all that someone has been through, so be gentle with others. you only ever see a fraction of a person's experiences in life and they only ever see a fraction of yours - so try to be gentle with others as you would want them to be gentle with you.

if you poke around a bit on here, you'll find i was an english literature major. and before that, i was a forensic psychology major.

i have always loved books. i have talked about my who first introduced me to mythology before (that post is linked above in the what drew me to the occult question). but most of the mythology that i post is self taught - based on books i read in my spare time. part 3 of asteroids that aren't getting more attention than this was from what i learned in my senior fall semester of uni though! i am still learning all the branches of mythology if i am being honest! anyone that claims they have read all the classic literature of a culture and knows all of a set myth is lying. there is always more to read - particularly, i find that true of norse mythos!!

when was in high school, i submitted 10 applications and got into all of them even columbia university (ivy). but i didn't know what i wanted to do and i didn't feel secure about traveling far from home (a gut feeling). so i went to a community college as of 2019 - when i started college i wanted to be an OBGYN. i took a weeding class right off the bat to find out if it was for me and the answer was a fat no - anatomy and physiology was the bane of my existence (despite my prof saying my dissection technique was quite good). in 2020, i was feeling better about college and it was the week before spring break when i asked my sociology professor what will happen to society if it stands still and she told me "nothing good". we went on break and i never returned to the campus except to pick up my degree. in my final spring semester (2021) at the community college, i met a boy and he inspired me transfer and continued my degree. i applied to 5 colleges and got into 3 because 2 of them wouldn't accept me without my father's tax records (i'm estranged from my father so *shrug*). i selected my uni based on the money they gave me to go there and the parking situation haha. i commuted to my university because i still was wasn't comfortable with strangers and the pandemic (during the first year of the pandemic alone my family members went through 2 surgeries and had many experiences having COVID). so i started at my uni. my first semester was a cultural shift - i didn't realize that your GPA resets when you transfer. i was shoved into a bunch of classes that weren't related to the major i selected. it was a struggle. in november, i started experiencing social anxiety and depression and i just pushed through my first semester. my gpa was bad, i was worried my academic scholarship would get revoked, etc. my holiday break, i spent on the couch - my depression was so bad that my mother was sort of frustrated/upset when telling me to get help. my semester started and i was taking 6 classes trying to catch up. i was so anxious that i got physically ill and my menstrual cycles were progressively worse i skipped days because i physically couldn't leave the couch i got physically ill from that too. i had to drop one of my classes... i was afraid of getting sick in front of other and in class. by the end of the semester, i was starting to think that maybe i should just drop out and the school counselor was advising the same plus to seek in-patient treatment somewhere. i got a new therapist because that one and the one before sucked (no offense - but quitting is never the answer in my eyes). my new therapist suggested online school, a gap year, etc. but of all her suggestions changing my major was the most promising. that summer (2022), i took 3 online courses all literature based and got a 4.0. in the last few weeks of summer, i moved homes and i was anxious about being in person again with the mask policy lifted, my menstrual struggles, not knowing anyone in my new major (except my department chair and the one professor i had a for a summer class), etc. the first day i was on campus, i went to my advisor and told her i wanted more classes online and she told me no. my nose started bleeding (the menstrual medication they had me on helped my symptoms but cause other issues) in that meeting. i went to my first class with blood on my jeans and a crush-n-go ice pack to my nose. i sat in the front of my class stressing and feeling hopeless - two minutes to the start of class was when a boy sat down next to me. he became my best friend in that college. i survived that semester. in the spring semester, i started a new medications for my menstrual cycle and i felt even better. i thrived in that last year at my uni - i got awards, made friends, etc. i graduated cum laude - and now i miss it. i think of college fondly despite the suffering i endure throughout my experience.

1) Aemond Targaryen - First character of his I properly saw and cared about. Though I wasn’t a massive fan at the beginning since I was way too in love with his brother, he definitely grew on me a lot

2) Billy Washington - He’s so pathetic and sweet and traumatised what’s not to love? I wanna hug him and softly make out with him on a sofa before making him a nice cup of tea for him. He’s actually the first character I saw of Ewans, as I watched trigger point when it was on gogglebox. Only I didn’t know it was him at the time, so when I rewatched the episode and saw Ewan I had a whole realisation overcome me

3) Michael Gavey - It’s the nerd what’s drawing me in. I love a switch character I can tell is a switch. He has such potential especially with his bitchy yet whiny attitude. I wanna see the movie hopefully next week so let’s fingerscross it so I can see my boy on screen

4) Osferth - He’s a sweetheart, but to be honest it’s a tie between him and Ettore. Both have places in my heart for different reasons. Osferth has this determination and kindness that sets himself out from the others. For his friends, the found family he has made for himself and his faith. It’s an admirable thing and the exploration of his character in different elements are so interesting to read about. I’m watching TLK in small steps and am just waiting patiently for the baby monk to make my day

5) Ettore - He has a darkness that draws me in I ain’t gonna deny it. I don’t condone his actions I say that now, but his mind fascinates me, especially seeing how Ewan portrayed him in the movie. The use of movement was actually so cool looking at it in a bigger picture and his character as a whole. We know nothing about him, and yet we also know everything. I fucking love it

6) Tom Bennett - He’s a cocky shit, but he’s so pretty. His love for his family and his relationships with people are a nice thing to see. He’s got a charm surrounding him and a charisma that refreshing and draws you in. One thing I also like is that there’s a character in the series that has my name and I officially have tons voice saying my name. It’s sort of weird

7) Abraham - He’s so tough and so determined and so addictive to see. He’s got that whole dominating persona, and I wanna see it crimble. I want him to Dom the fuck out of me yet also allow me to hold him if he’s sad. The best of both world. Also, the hair is magnificent. I wanna pull it so bad

8) Billy Taylor - He’s a cinnamon roll, but a forgettable one at that. He’s adorable and I love the idea of domming him, but I have no idea where to go after that. He’s pretty but forgettable. I do love him though, the fics do his character very well

9) Genyen/Shawn - At least there’s works on Billy T. You’re just a scarcity like finding water in a desert. I had a dream once when Genyen and Abraham were the same person. This is as interesting as I can find this character apart from his stealing thing. That makes him fun

10) Will - Listen, he’s pretty yes I will not deny, but I forget he’s here half the time I literally nearly forgot to add him to this list alone so yeah. Interesting character yes I won’t deny, but forgettable in the long run compared to other roles

1: What does your OC feel is important to be talented at?

For Eli it's important to be musically talented. He's been playing guitar since he received his first guitar as a toddler. He's been writing his own music since he was little kid. He can play the piano as well as the guitar but he prefers the guitar. He can his guitar with him on long walks in the woods and write music with nature.

2: Does your OC adapt easily to changes in life or do they have a hard time getting accustomed?

He's fairly adaptable. He takes change as a natural part of life. The only time change is difficult for him is when he percieves this change as a way to control him. Then he tends to stick his toes in and shows his stubborn side.

3: Does your OC struggle with any type of addictions?

No. He generally doesn't party or go out to bars. It's just not his scene despite his friends best efforts to get him to go out with them after performing and touring. On the rare occasions he does go out with them he tends to drink non-alcoholic drinks. He finds it frustrating that in his band persona he's depicted as being a hardcore parteir and always rumored to being in rehab whenever they take a break from touring. All rumors perpetuated by his managers seeking to give him a bad boy rep.

4: How does your OC behave typically under severe stress?

He tends to go with the flow to keep harmony with the band and his managers but when he hits his limit he lets his frustration out in passive aggressive ways.

5: What calms your OC down the best under severe stress?

Being left alone or having someone to talk his feelings out. Most of the time it's turning to his parents or his sister, Jolene. But later on it'll be Awan who has always been to calm him when no one else could.

He dislikes confrontation and when he's being pushed into things he has a tendancy to become self critical and believing he's not enough and what he wants doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

He dislikes the fact he doesn't stand up for himself but at the same time he likes being the one to keep the peace.

8: What does your OC hate and appreciate on others?

He dislikes the demands others put upon his time, his life and making decisions for him that he doesn't agree with. He appreciates being able to do what he loves but he doesn't like that he has no say in it.

9: What maladaptive behavioral models in your OC’s personality do they have to struggle with the most?

He struggles with avoidance tendancies and when he can't avoid the person or situation then he becomes passive aggressive.

10: What type of people does your OC idolize the most?

His dad, Jonah and Cecil. His sister Jolene because she doesn't take crap from anyone.

11: What makes your OC feel most guilt in their life?

The answer to this is kind of spoilery. So I'm going to try to keep this as nonspecifc as possible. He regrets what he said and did the last time he saw Awan. He blames himself for Awan leaving. That he finally got up enough courage to express how he felt and he never saw Awan again for several years later.

12: Is your OC mature or immature for their age?

He's very mature. He's always felt he had to watch out for his family. He mediated between his parents and Jolene; especially when they were teenagers and she wanted more freedom. He kept her from doing what he thought would be a terrible mistake and moving in with their dad, Ethan when she felt the rules that Cecil and Jonah set for her were too restrictive and unreasonable.

13: How independent is your OC for their age and life situation?

He's always wanted to be a musician. He formed his band when he was a kid and they got their first gig at sixteen and a music contract at 18. He's been fairly independent ever since; although he will call Jonah/Cecil for advice before making important decisions.

14: Where and what from does your OC seek most typically comfort from?

Until he meets Awan again he seeks comfort from being alone in nature.

15: Is your OC afraid of confrontation or do they seek to lay things down on open?

He avoids confrontations as much as he possibly can. He likes to please people and he struggles with setting limits so people tend to take advantage of him.

16: How openly does your OC show their emotions?

He's easy going, calm and amiable. What he doesn't show easily is anger. He tends to repress that until it's like a volcano erupting.

17: What does your OC do when they’re dealing with intense emotional pain?

He goes out for a walk or plays music so that he can think and recharge.

18: What aspect of your OC’s personality or essence do other people usually have a problem with?

People get so used to him accepting things and not making waves that they are shocked when he's hit his limit.

He's very social but he wouldn't say he seeks attention. He'd much rather just perform and disappear into the background once its over.

Yes he does.

No he doesn't. Althought he has a secret that might give someone else one.

Unlike what his managers say he does not and he doesn't like the image they have created of him either. It would surprise his fans that he hasn't had sex yet and feels very little interest in it (that will change once he's reunited with someone who has had his heart forever)

He knows his own self worth he just doesn't see that it's worth asserting himself if it means making waves.

26: Does your OC live in self-denial about anything?

Yes. Once he and Awan meet again he will deny having any feelings for him.

He thinks it's a wonderful dream but not one for him. (We'll see if someone can change his mind)

Definitely loyal

He has his comfort zone and his forrays out of it. He's not one to be reckless despite his public image of being a bad boy.

(and for context, I recently got Nick addicted to Persona 5 Royal, so we've been chatting about our OC's and yan's Krow and Fone being persona users and/or palace users)

I think that is very fitting for Fone. As for Krow, I am still muddling a lot on both if he were a palace user and if he were a persona user.

For palace user Krow, I think his would look like either a gallery or an aviary. Or fuck it man the metaverse is weird, it could be both. The whole palace is encased in a GIANT cage, with all kinds of birds (real and VERY fantastical) flying about, and parts of the environment look... painted, sketched, sculpted, in different styles (so you'd see some impressionism, some surreal, and so on). Then of course, there is art of Dove EVERYWHERE. I'm not entirely decided on what his Treasure would be (either in the Metaverse or how it'd look in the real world). I'm not sure how cognitive Krow would look either. I think though, that most cognitive people would look scribbled out, some would be more "filled in" (like his coworkers), some actually look like a nicely rendered walking art piece (like Luke and Jazzy would). Dove would look the most "real" in the sense of like... a person.

For persona user Krow, idk on a codename yet or even what his outfit would be. I know for sure his persona would either be an Indian folk hero or perhaps even one of the gods in Hinduism. His weapon is of course a knife, and he doesn't use a gun. He THROWS his knives. I think for persona powers, his main element may either be Wind or Psy, and I think either he'd do status buffs/debuffs (since he can be manipulative and charming) or some healing (because he often has to patch himself up).

In any case, it's a LOT to consider.

Duolingo ACTUALLY just SUCKS. and there's no use to keep using this cheap excuse of a manipulative junk.

Long rant below ⤵️

An app, about making language learning fun SHOULD NEVER. EVER. think guilt tripping, shaming, and being mean is ok.

Especially recently with the notifs (tho i deleted all the screenshots i made of those).

Do the devs not realise that this is genuinely problematic? Not everyone who uses the app cares (or likes) the online Duolingo meme persona (or knows it). Not all people who use the app react very positively to needy, guilt trippy, manipulative mean behaviour.

I remember such emails making me VERY emotionally unhappy when i was using it to practice my German (when i first moved to the country) as i was already getting isolated from the native students for not being able to communicate with them, or having to work twice as much to keep up with school so i wouldn't fail just to get worse results.

Imagine telling a 13 year old CHILD that their "skills in German are getting bad" because they didn't use your app. (And what negatively affects a young teen can affect an old person, or an insecure person, or a person with mental illness or disorders)

And they have only gotten worse over the years. I keep reinstalling duo every so often to have fun/practice languages of different kinds cause i think its cool to want to make linguistics fun... but every time i leave faster than the last.

Every time i get more sick and tired of this pathetic green owl that doesn't actually want you to learn a language or have fun but instead "get exp every day"

Which sorry to tell you but Experience points don't work in language learning games.

1.. "Grinding level 1" over and over doesn't make you good at a language. it just makes you good at knowing what "Dog" in a different language is.

2. Hearts. Really? Isn't learning about making mistakes What makes you think that everyone wants (or can) do it daily?

3. If i wanna do it on specific days i cant?? So you guilt me into having to do it every day??? Fudge you.

4. The competitions for badges?? Makes people care more about the "game" (that is not FUN AT ALL) rather than .... Idk.... LEARNING???

5. Where did the costumes go?? I swear it was the only thing i found fun: do a lesson, get gems and then u can customise the owl. I was always hoping they would add more but instead they effing got rid of the mechanic all together. Yayyyyy.... :|

6. Addictive?? Why?? Isnt the app supposed to be "5 minutes a day" not "Instagram-doomscroll" levels of grinding??

And so much more.

Fuck that owl. I hate it. I hate how the devs progressively made it worse and worse.But the worst is the emails imo.

Nothing will be worse than an app shaming you for not using it. See how dystopian our society is already?? Getting guilt-tripped around by a EFFING DIGITAL OWL.

An analysis of Billie Eilish’s ‘WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?’

Today marks the 5 year anniversary of Billie Eilish's debut album, ‘WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?’.

To celebrate, I want to make this thread that analyzes each song for what it's about & why it exists. I've actually done an analysis on this album before, so this is just gonna be a summarized version.

!!!!!!!

This 14 second monologue of Billie pulling out her Invisalign was actually the first thing her & Finneas EVER recorded for the album. Fittingly enough, its length matches the amount of tracks on the album (14 seconds = 14 tracks). Also, the track’s title is officially pronounced ‘Seven Exclamation Points’.

bad guy

The biggest single on the album. It's a track that Billie wrote to mock at people who put on fake personas & make themselves look more important than who they really are. The title is actually a reference to Scarface, in which Al Pacino's character, Tony Montana, says "Say goodnight to the bad guy!"

xanny

Billie wrote this track after her & her friends went to a party. She noticed afterwards that they started acting rather unusual. Smoking, drinking, vomiting, acting up on her, it made them feel like different people, and that was something Billie wanted to represent. Especially in the chorus, where the distorted bass & Billie's textured vocals really imitates that of second-hand smoking.

you should see me in a crown

This is the first single off of the album. It's actually written off of a line from BBC's Sherlock!

"We wrote this song ‘cause of Sherlock, actually, 'cause there’s a scene where Jim Moriarty says, 'You should see me in a crown’ and me and my brother were like, ‘Hey, that’s jiggy as f*ck.’ Then we just sorta made the song about being jiggy I guess, and you should see me in a crown, so there it is." - Billie during the premiere of the song on BBC Radio 1.

all the good girls go to hell

Billie's take on Christian symbolism & climate change, even taking key notes from Ariana Grande & continuing the indication of God being a woman. This song is in reference to the California wildfires that happened around the time "you should see me in a crown" was being released.

wish you were gay

Also a very early track Billie wrote. It was written when she had been rejected by a guy she liked. She was hoping for other reasons that weren't about her to be the reason for his rejection, and she thought of the idea that he could've been gay. Ironically enough, when the song dropped, he got in contact with Billie, and told her that he turned out to be gay after all!

when the party's over

A song about distancing one's self from romantic interest, Billie wrote this as more of an angry perspective, rather than sad. It's also based on a story in which Finneas had drove away from this girl he was dating with. It's a feeling you're not happy about, but it needed to be done.

Flipping over to Side B, we have a song about feeling regretful for being rude to a friend. Billie shows a lot of sympathy to her friend, and regrets hurting them as is.

"When people hear that song, they’re like, ‘Oh, poor baby Billie, she’s so hurt.’ But really I was just a dickhead for a minute and the only way I could deal with it was to stop and put myself in that person’s place."

my strange addiction

Written off of the TLC series, 'My strange addiction', Billie finds herself taking on another person when she should be taking a break for herself. The interludes & opening are also sampled from The Office episode, 'Threat Level Midnight' (S7:E17)

bury a friend

Sleep paralysis. Demons. Fear from what's beneath. All of which combined makes up the creepiest song on the album. It's about the idea of a monster being under Billie's bed, and the confusing relationship she has with this monster. It's also where the title of the album comes from.

What also adds to this unsettling tension is dentist equipment that was recorded for the album. This song also transitions smoothly into...

ilomilo

Going from fearing somebody, to fearing loneliness. The song's idea also comes from the video game of the same name, in which you control both Ilo and Milo, as they are separated apart, solving puzzles in order for them to reach each other. That concept of escaping loneliness plays into this song incredibly well. The lyrics for it would also be used in the documentary, ‘Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry’.

listen before i go

By far, one of the saddest songs on the album, Billie writes a heart wrenching story of a woman who is ready to end her life by jumping off of a building, writing her final message to her friends & her partner.

The track really pulls at you, with how openly depressing its structure is. It even has these bass jabs that appear in the middle that really make you feel like you have like an instant panic attack. The track ultimately ends with a bass thump, with ambulance sounds and screaming, ultimately leading us to believe that she had actually done it.

i love you

Toxic dependency is a tragedy as old as love itself. In the penultimate song for the album, Billie sings about two emotionally distraught lovers trying to find peace in each other.

This guitar-eccentric “love” ballad is also the longest song on the album, clocking in at almost 5 minutes. The title for her longest song would later go to ‘Happier Than Ever.’ And with this track being the penultimate song helps wrap the album into a nice bow. A bow covered in blood, tears, sadness & spiders.

goodbye

To finish off the album is a one minute melancholic medley. It samples the bridge from ‘xanny’ and recites all of the album’s songs in reverse order. From ‘i love you’ -> ‘bad guy’, and ending it off with a tape stop.

Billie wrote this because she didn’t want the album to just end inconclusive. She felt like albums ending with a random song from the track list doesn’t make it feel like it actually properly ended. So she wrote this ending piece as a way to cap off the album. She also uses this track to end off her concerts too, even to this day.

Conclusion

When I first picked the CD up for this album in June 2019, I was honestly not knowing what to expect. I did hear a few of the singles before the album released but I wasn’t expecting something as intense as it did. And I LOVED it.

I know that Billie has evolved a lot since this album’s release, and I know she’s had even MORE critical and commercial success since, but I will be forever grateful for this album’s existence. It got me through some of the darkest times I’ve ever had, and every listen to this album gave me a fuzzy experience that I don’t think will ever be replicated again.

To Billie, Finneas, and the WWAFA,WDWG crew… thank you. Thank you for giving us one of, if not, the GREATEST album of 2019, and for the 2010s as a whole. May Billie continue to seek success and continue to be one of the most important pop stars in the music industry.
