Check Yes (to go on a date with a dead guy) ch3
“So, what’s your deal?” Jason asked, when Danny’s mouth was full of food. “You’re dead, I notice.”
Danny choked. He gave Jason a betrayed look with big blue eyes, a hand clapped over his mouth to contain any mess.
Jason smirked back, unrepentant. “I died once,” he shared. “Got better though.”
“You got be-”
“You were surprised about what it’s like to fight humans,” Jason continued. It was hard not to laugh at the confused outrage on his date’s face. “So that implies you fight someone else? You’re fighting ghosts or something? Or do ghosts have some kinda natural enemy? Vampires or some shit?” He might have been a bit flippant but sue him, it sounded a lot more magical than his daily life.
Danny opened his mouth and no words came out. He looked like he was in pain when he grudgingly admitted, “I do have a lot of beef with this one vampire guy, Vlad.”
Jason threw his head back and laughed. That was such a vampire guy name, what the hell?
“No, no, it’s not funny,” Danny protested. He waved his hands wildly, flinging a bit of bean from his burrito across the roof they were perched on. “He’s also a ghost- well, he’s a half of a ghost, but that’s a long story from when he was in college.”
“The half-ghost vampire has an undergraduate degree?” Jason interrupted. He needed to know what this fucker studied. Was it like, social science? Literature? Theater? That might explain Danny’s implied belief that a theme was an inherent rogue thing. No, wait, business administration?
Danny gave him a withering look. “He’s got a Doctorate.”
Jason flung his hands up in defeat against the world. That made more sense than an undergraduate degree somehow. There was just something about the type of person who got a Doctorate that made them, you know, creeps.
‘Or maybe they’ve just got enough specialized knowledge to act on latent creepiness,’ he mused. ‘...Shit, am I developing an anti education stance? Can I blame this on Crane and Quinn?’
Danny was continuing with his explanation of the vampire’s background. Every word made it nuttier. “He’s a scientist, actually, and the mayor of a small town. And he lives in a cheese mansion.”
This was a sharp divergence from vampire stereotypes and he needed to know everything.
“Is the mansion made of cheese?” Jason interrupted. He was leaning in, intent on every word. Why was this vampire the most interesting man in the world?
He got a weird look for that. “No, it just belonged to the Dairy King,” Danny said, like it was everyday knowledge that you could expect a layperson to have.
“Of course, the Dairy King,” Jason said wisely.
"Enough about me though!" Danny flailed a bit. "How did you get my uh, number?"
Ah. Jason took a big bite to delay while he chose his words.
There was no point in trying to hide his vigilante identity from Danny. The guy probably didn't even understand the concept.
So he might as well top whatever story Danny had.
"The bat guy who taught me all about being a child soldier got grabbed by this group of loser cultists, right?" He gestured in a way that did absolutely nothing to illustrate the situation.
Danny cocked his head. "This is off to a good start."
"They tried to sacrifice him. You gotta remember him - big ugly guy, dressed in black and gray, underwear on the outside of his pants in a way that's never been cool?"
Danny didn't seem to have words, but he lifted his hands to make two ears on top of his head.
He pointed with both hands. "That's the guy," Jason agreed. "At the time, we didn't know what kind of sacrifice it was. We were thinking more along the lines of blood sacrifice?" He shrugged as if the idea of B biting it meant nothing to him.
Danny made a pffft sound of air escaping between his lips. "I tossed him back." He flailed in place. "I- isn't- wasn't that- that was a while ago," he stuttered. "I kinda forgot about him."
"...You got offered a cape, then a few weeks later a bunch of others, and you didn't make a mental connection?" Jason checked.
Danny flushed. "Time doesn't match up between the realms and anyway, I'm really busy!" He crossed his arms and accidentally knocked over his drink. "I've got a lot going on in my life. Anyway, for a ghost?" Danny blew a raspberry. "I'm sorry to break your heart, but none of you dress wild enough to stand out in the Infinite Realms. We've got robot dudes and child pirates and giant eyeballs and stuff." He gave Jason a smug look. It was cute.
Jason acted on impulse and reached out to ruffle Danny's hair. He realized what he was doing too late. His hand froze above Danny's head.
Danny tilted his face up and made an inquisitive sound.
"There was a bug." Jason pulled his hand back. What was wrong with him? He didn't go touching other people just because they were cute. "It flew off."
"...Right," Danny said. "You're being very normal." He seemed delighted by this, the little gremlin. "So. You were a child soldier too?"
Jason nearly fell off his perch.
Danny shrieked a laugh and pointed. "Ha!" He crowed. "I win! I shocked you first!"
"There wasn't a competition!" Jason lied. His face was bright red. It was too late to save face. "What do you mean too?" He demanded. "Were you a child?"
"Somewhat recently," Danny said. He gave Jason a catlike smile. "Adults come from teenagers, teenagers come from kids, kids come from babies. Do you need to know-"
"I know where babies come from." Jason cut him off. He tried to look off put at the way Danny laughed at him but fuck it, it was funny, in a dumb way. "Of course you were a kid, that was silly of me," he admitted. "Ghosts are made from humans, right?"
"Well yes, but actually no," Danny said, philosophical. "Some of us. I was. Other ghosts are made from like, vultures, or ideas."
It kinda seemed like ghost taxonomy was more complicated than he was ready to get into at the moment. Those two things were pretty fuckin disparate.
Jason sighed heavily and picked up his food again, just to have something to do with his hands.
A thought occurred. He didn't let it show on his face but he felt sick to his stomach.
Danny was dead. Danny said he'd been a child recently, and a child soldier.
Someone needed their ass kicked.
Danny: we are having such a whimsical time!
Jason: sirens screaming

Glad to see that Tim being a giant Dick Grayson fanboy is finally being highlighted again, and sparking more discussion especially on their early relationship! (Please gimme more!!! I love them so much, augh!)
Probably as a result of that surge, there seems to be reciprocal chatter on the topic of how young Tim actually felt towards Jason, too. It's honestly pretty interesting, because it's more nuanced than it appears at first glance.
Which means it's very fun to dissect! ✨
There's a degree of subjectivity to keep in mind, because readers are going to have different interpretations of the same scenes, or will pull from entirely different scenes than one another to form their individual view on this topic. That's just how it is in comic book fandom, for many things! Regardless, in this case... if the scale ranges from the extreme of "Jason was Tim's Robin" to the other extreme of "Tim actually hated Jason [as Robin] or thought he was a loser that got himself killed" — the actual truth is closer to the middle, as is often the case.
At least, in my opinion.
Mainly I want to focus on those relatively early days with this post, to highlight Tim's initial(-ish) feelings towards his heroes, and touch on the point at which they really begin to change. This turned into a very long post, though. Brevity is beyond my skill, so grab snacks and water lol. Transcripts for each image will be posted at the very end under the cut.
So, the two storylines I want to cover are "Rite of Passage," which is rolls into "Identity Crisis." (NOT to be confused with the major crossover event "Identity Crisis™" which came years later, and is where Jack Drake dies.... But it sure is an interesting coincidence that Tim deals with the loss of each parent in two similarly named stories!) These take place before Tim is even Robin, and I'll be considering them as one arc for this post.

Detective Comics vol. 1 #618 (July, 1990) -- Pages 1 & 2
"When Gotham needed him, he was there. When the Batman needed him, he was there. He was a hero."
"One day, I'll be as good as Jason. One day I'll wear the suit."
To start off, we have this opening from "Rite of Passage." Tim is still in training here, mainly helping Bruce with minor stuff from the cave. His parents are off traveling, alive and well as of these next few pages. He's still bright-eyed and full of wonder. An extraordinarily weird but ultimately innocent kid.
So his view on Jason is positive and fairly simple: a hero, and someone to look up to as Robin. Clearly, Tim here doesn't think Jason was deficient in his role, either as a protector of Gotham or as Batman's trusted partner.
Moreover, Tim already held Dick in very high regard because he was amazingly skilled before he became Robin. To Tim, that's not something he'll ever be able to achieve. Meanwhile, Jason wasn't like that. He was a regular kid without crazy acrobatic training since practically birth. Yet he still went on to be a hero—which is obviously motivational for Tim who finds himself in similar shoes.
It's true that Tim only ever knew or thought of Jason as Robin, and idolized him in that regard. But that's kind of all that mattered to him at that point, because he was this kid who was utterly star-struck by his heroes. Even if he's technically aware of their shortcomings as people, it's overshadowed by the hero-worship.
It was kind of the same with Bruce as Batman at first. (Which was still enough for Tim to risk life and limb to help his beloved hero, before Bruce even knew his name.) Dick was the only one Tim had any sort of "personal" relationship with beforehand, so there is an extra level of attachment—and hence why it was the nidus for his obsession with Batman. Yet even then, it wasn't like he actually knew anything about Dick as a person until later. Until then, Tim's ideas of him were all he had, too. With Jason, Tim just didn't get to know him at any point before his return (oof), apart from what he heard over the years secondhand (also oof).
Ultimately, it's the loss of innocence—along with the ricocheting bullet that is the unresolved guilt of those around him—that begins to change Tim's perception. Not just of Jason, but of things in general.

Batman vol. 1 #455 (Oct., 1990) -- Page 13
"I know why they do it now. Why they put on the suits, and the masks, and go out into the night. They're angry, they're full of rage. They want to hit back."
Losing his mother was a major shift for Tim, obviously. This is right after the previous storyline, and Tim's had the worst week or two of his life (so far). His monologue here is a reference to what happened to both Dick and Jason. The unbearable pain of loss, the rage masking the grief underneath. And importantly, that he feels both of them were justified in their anger. (And Bruce too, indirectly.)
The major theme of the aptly named "Identity Crisis" is to mirror aspects of Dick and Jason and Tim's lives—to show how they converged onto the same tragic road. It's something that Tim notices early in the story, and was frightened by. Now, horrifically, it's become a part of him as well. His parents are gone, and he was entirely helpless to do anything about it. Dick was the same way, Jason was the same way. The cycle is repeated.
In particular, the part about him wanting to go to Haiti for revenge—for his mother—sort of struck me as being an intentional parallel to Jason and Ethiopia. It's a bit of a stretch, especially in isolation, so others may see it differently (e.g. the angry ramblings of a grieving child that does sound like something anyone might say). But it always stuck out to me because of how much Tim is compared directly to Jason in this arc. More on that below.
It's not something I can really give an accurate feel of because it's a lot of subtle things that begin to add up, so I'd encourage folks to read this arc themselves to see what I mean. (Or maybe you'll still disagree which is fine too lol.) Again, many things are in reference to both Dick and Jason in relation to Tim, but it's weighted more on Jason's side.
Tumblr media
Batman vol. 1 #455 (Oct., 1990) -- Page 18
"You think my anger will boil over, the way Jason's did. I can assure you, it won't!"
Tim's grief has begun to pull away the veil of idealism that enshrouded his heroes in his mind. It doesn't apply only to Jason, but to the rest of them. Plus add the fact that Tim's keenly aware that he's being managed, even if the adults around him are careful to not outright say certain things. He still knows.
Bruce, Dick, and Alfred are all worried about Tim potentially turning into "another Jason." They (and mainly Bruce) caution Tim to not ignore his emotions, but they're still concerned that he may be overly eager to prove himself in order to cope, and could get hurt or killed as a result. While they aren't wrong for their caution—especially at how unsettlingly similar all the circumstances are—they aren't very subtle about the elephant in the room.
Imagine how that would affect Tim's perception of his predecessor, especially when he's in the midst of a traumatic event he hasn't had time to fully process. The negative association is pretty much inevitable.
Tim's known from day one that he's walking in Jason's shadow, and now it's become inescapable. Tim went from seeing Jason as a goal to reach, to feeling that unless he surpasses him, he wasn't going to be taken seriously by anyone. However, as of this arc, Tim doesn't even fully come to that point yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman vol. 1 #456 (Nov., 1990) -- Pages 14 & 15
"Drop-outs don't make it. And dead heroes are no use to anyone!"
It's really easy to take away "Tim totally thought Jason got himself killed" as the main thing here, but I think that's missing the forest for the trees.
First some context: Bruce has gone out on a mission to get Scarecrow, and expressly forbade Tim from doing any shenanigans. Meanwhile, Tim is grappling with wanting to prove himself and trying to help Bruce from the cave, all while trying to deal with his emotions. At some point, he falls asleep and ends up having like... exhaustion-grief hallucinations of Dick!Robin and Jason!Robin who confusingly caution yet encourage him. The main theme of this part is facing your fears.
Depending on how you want to interpret the intent of Jason's dialogue here, you could go several ways with it. Ranging from "writer's feelings towards Jason" to "a peek into Tim's mind as his fears manifest as visions of his heroes" or some mixture thereof.
Though Tim argues with Bruce that Batman needs a Robin, we're shown that Tim is understandably scared of joining Batman's "war." He's still not willing to let Bruce go it alone, though, and that's something he feels more strongly than his fear.
Meanwhile, hallucination!Jason's warnings are a lamentation of what happened to him in a way, but it actually exactly describes Tim's current situation even more so. Unlike Jason, Tim is under-trained, under-experienced, doesn't even have a suit of his own yet. But like Jason, he can't sit by and do nothing while someone he cares about is in danger. Tim knows that if he goes out there, he will probably get himself killed, and it will be his own fault. So he's about to disobey Batman's orders, and fly right into danger. If that got Jason killed, then Tim—who is in a way worse position experience-wise—has every chance of ending up the same.
Like... it's about Jason, but it's also about Tim. It's Tim's worst fears made manifest, via the representation of why he is even here in the first place (Jason's death).
That's my theory anyway, but perhaps this is an overly charitable reading of this scene on my end. (Not that I think that makes me wrong lol.) However given that Grant wrote both parts of this arc, and the beginning of which is especially favorable towards Jason, it certainly is something to ponder. I have a lot of thoughts on it I can't expand on here tbh but perhaps that'll be another post.
Anyway, returning to the point of the similarities vs differences between Tim and Jason: since this is the arc that solidified Tim as the next Robin in comic continuity, it makes sense that the writers really pushed the comparisons between the two of them, specifically. (Even though Dick was pretty similar, as going against Batman's orders is the Robin thing to do, it's not his shoes Tim is directly filling.) So making Tim's "debut" story arc mirror Jason's "swansong" is an obvious narrative choice.
To drive home the parallels, I wanted to include this panel from just a few pages prior to the "daydream":
Tumblr media
Batman vol. 1 #456 (Nov., 1990) -- Page 9
"The suit is magic."
That so distressingly close to Jason's famous "being Robin gives me magic" line (Batman #385, page 6). Given all the previous context, it's hard for me to just dismiss it as pure coincidence. Even if it is, the point still stands. Tim is shown having the some of the same heartbreakingly naive views as Jason once did, right in front of Jason's memorial, just as he's about to go and run off into the night against orders.
I think that speaks for itself. There's a lot to take away from it, if you so choose. Especially given the context of that specific Jason arc.
Alright, back to the main course:
So in the end, Tim actually goes out in civvies and a ski mask because if he fails, then at least he wouldn't bring shame to Robin's legacy™. When he gets fear gassed saving Batman, it's once again both Dick and Jason that he hallucinates encouraging him to push past his fear. (Shout out to the fact that he's literally more afraid of tarnishing the legacy of Batman & Robin than he is of dying.... I'm sure this will not be a recurring thing for him in the future.)
Tim's ideology is shown to be similar to Jason's, and the actions Tim ultimately takes are similar to Jason's... but the outcome is different. And it really isn't just "Tim succeeded where Jason failed." At least, that's not what I took away from this. Rather, Tim had no reason to succeed any more than he had to fail, just that he did. Luck combined with caution because he knew what happened to his predecessor, and the fact that Batman was there to finish the job all made the difference.
You could say (and I know some will) that it's just classic Jason character assassination and the writers trying to implore readers that this new kid is different we promise pls don't hate us look how much better he is! But in this case, that feels like it undermines the whole point of this story. It doesn't fit with what the characters actually say.
Thus, we return to the question of how Tim felt towards his predecessor. And the answer is different from where we started, because Tim is different. Not that different though. Because even though at this point Tim—like all the adults around him—has probably attributed Jason "going off on his own" being what led to his death, Tim still thought of him as a hero to look up to. It's about Robin, first and foremost, yes. But Tim is fully aware of the people who made that suit mean what it does, because it's all intertwined.
Tumblr media
Batman vol. 1 #457 (Dec., 1990) -- Page 20
"I mean--Dick made it into a symbol the whole world knows. Jason gave his life for it."
Even further, Tim thinks of it in terms of Jason having given his life for what he believed in, for the legacy that now falls to Tim. There's a sense of gravitas there. He's afraid of failing both the Robins who came before him.
Ultimately do I think Tim adored and loved Jason on the same level as Dick or something? No. It's not comparable. (Dick was like part of some of Tim's earliest memories and everything! They have a really unique bond ok.) Yet Tim was also far from thinking poorly of Jason so early on. Frankly, it seems that Tim thought of Jason as a noble hero and a cautionary tale. Yes he took risks and sometimes went too far, generally stuff that Tim doesn't want to repeat and all that. At the same time, Tim still saw him as someone whose legacy and memory was worth honoring.
It's complicated, which is why I like it so much—because it feels real. Having conflicting feelings towards someone is... so human. Especially someone you never got to know, yet who plays such an integral role in your life via the shadow of their death. How can you feel anything but complicated towards them?
It has to be said that, yes, Tim's views—even before Jason's return—change over the years. He becomes more jaded as a person and is surrounded by people who are even more jaded than him... and who often mention Jason as the "failed Robin." It's something that's hung over Tim's head all the damn time. The curse of the Robin mantle.
So it shouldn't come as a surprise that Tim's idea of him becomes more akin to "sounds like a skill issue" as the years go by. All bets are off after Jason's return, and the Titans Tower Incident™. At that point it's firmly "I am better than you, loser" lmao.
And... that's all without getting too into things like authorial intent and general "moods" of different DC writers towards Jason at a given point. Or retcons that played a role in his characterization and how other characters talk about him, depending on what "era" you're reading. That's way beyond the scope of this post though!
TLDR; even though young Tim Drake was obsessed with Dick Grayson as Robin, he still looked up to Jason Todd as well. He didn't think of Jason as a cringefail loser until later. :)

Bruce: Are you afraid of it?
Tim: No. It isn't fear. It's more... the suit carries so much history. I mean--Dick made it into a symbol the whole world knows. Jason gave his life for it. Failing them--what they fought so hard to build--that's what worries me!
Bruce: I appreciate that, Tim. That costume weighs a whole lot more than any symbol should... and I'd be failing you if I expected you to bear that weight. So... let me know what you think.

i don't think those are the whole and intact jon, martin, or jonah* in there
here's why
so before i get into this i need to mention that the ideas im riffing on here came from a conversation with @bigmilkagenda who is smart and brilliant and beautiful.
but i was thinking, and what do the existing accounts we've heard have in common? obviously, there are different degrees to which and ways in which these ideas are engaged with between each account, but extremely broadly:
we have ideas of the irreversible alteration or corruption of the physical form, and how that does and does not correlate with personhood and the self. specifically, how do these physical changes intersect with identity, and at which point can someone be said not to be there, themselves, anymore?
"some of him"?
i think it's safe to assume that redcanary, inasmuch as they were a mischievous little urbex enthusiast, cannot and will not be returning in the form that they left, if indeed they return at all
daria, though they are willingly engaging in the process of change and transformation, also doesn't have full control over the process, nor the results, if their preference not to be seen on camera is any indication
dr webber... well. gestures vaguely at the all of that.
there's another common theme amongst these, to me: there are varying degrees of suggestion of a judgmental observer, or a more general but prominent idea of seeing and perception. the subject of the first case (who i'd heard fandom ppl calling harry but who the official and unofficial transcripts both refer to as harriet, but that's not my point rn, just a thing i noticed) obviously experiences the horror of what they go through because, mostly, of the visuals of it.
the fuckin magnus institute.
daria's experience both with ink5oul's assessment of them and the whole livestream experience (which is chilling tbqh)
the increasing suggestion thru dr webber's journal that maddie is very much there (to him) and overseeing what is happening to him, appraising, if not judging directly.
so we've got a joint idea of loss of one's physical structural integrity/questions of both mortality and identity, and we've got an idea of perception and sight.
here's where i need to make a logical leap, but essentially, this thematic focus is making me think that there is something Less Than JMJ in the system (ghosts in the machine as it were), but that, if and when that's examined, it will not lessen the impact and poignancy of what they're experiencing, what they're capable of thinking or feeling, etc.
*i think it's equally possible, at least at this juncture, that J.02 isn't necessarily Literally Jonah Magnus: the wiki says that james wright "died" in 1996, and although that doesn't correspond directly with the institute's fire in 1999, it's possible that things progressed differently in this universe, and maybe he was the director of the institute at the time. but also this is much more speculative than my other points, i just think it would be neat!!!

I genuinely think William’s real name is actually still William, just with a different surname.
Hear me out.
#1 — irony.
Remember the omake where Bonde asks him and he’s got his ☺️ face ‘that’s a secret, heh heh heh.’
Tumblr media
Lol William is the biggest mischievous jokester going. This would be his exact reaction if people were asking like 👀 omg what is it?? And all along he’s like, lol will.i.am guys, chill. No-one cares about your first name, it’s your surname which means anything around here. You’ve all been barking up the wrong tree. Which brings me on to my second point ~
#2 — symbolism.
I cannot scream enough about how bloody genius it would be for William’s name to be, in fact, just William, but with a more common surname like ‘Smith.’ For the purposes of this discussion, let’s call him William Smith. As an orphan, he gets adopted into the family Moriarty, where there is in fact another William: Master William James Moriarty. Immediately, you have two boys of similar ages with the exact same first names, highlighting how, in fact, they should be equal if we’re looking at their basic information and identifiers. But what is it which sets them apart, and is the very message and theme running through the heart of Yuumori? Class inequality. And what dictated your social class at the time, so very unfairly? Your family lineage.

The name of Moriarty is what gives Albert’s little brother his superior, privileged position in life, over William ‘Smith.’ And yet, they are both young boys, both Williams, both should have the same sort of start in life in the equal world our William wishes to create. But they do not; the moment they are given their surnames — the moment those are penned on the paper of their birth records following ‘William’, the chasm that divides these boys is immense and unfair.
#3 — interesting coincidences, hints and clues in the text.
• William loves Shakespeare — that’s part of his identity in the same way being a mathematician is. He quotes Shakespeare all the time, he grew up in a library and has all of the plays memorised. Shakespeare’s first name was also William. Additionally, Shakespeare’s birthday is believed to be April 23rd. William’s birthday is listed as April 1st — April Fool’s Day, and it has been confirmed that this is a fake birthday, so we don’t know his real one currently. (But my guess is it’s still in April).
• The Moriarty’s never call William by his name, pre-fire, but the children at his orphanage do, and they call him Will.
Tumblr media
At the Moriarty house, he is on the receiving end of more hate than Louis; they seem to despise him to the nth degree. I wonder if this might be because he shares a name with their precious William, and this irks them. They refuse to call him by his name because that doesn’t belong to him, filth from the streets, it belongs to their beloved son who can do no wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can see a mother like Lady Moriarty refusing to call another boy by the name she gifted her son, especially when William reminds her that there is something she had in common with his own mother — someone who she would view as completely beneath her: they chose the same name. What a disgrace, to be associated or viewed as having a similar mind to a woman of such low standing!?
Tumblr media
We also see William only ever call William Moriarty with the title ‘master’ in front, as though he also feels the need to make the distinction. This could just be because he’s trying to be polite, though. I could honestly dissect the entire first chapter panel by panel and highlight how William being William is such a simple but perfect concept which highlights this noble family’s insecurities, discrimination and narrow mindedness. William Moriarty feels the need to constantly reaffirm his own identity in the presence of our William.
Tumblr media
Because … if they share full names now, with the adoption … the lines are blurring. What makes one William Moriarty superior to the other? A worrying thought indeed for this boy. (Answer: there is no difference, they’re both equally deserving of opportunities in life.)
It all makes such perfect sense and explains away the awkwardness of the writer having to avoid use of William’s name simply because ‘it needs to stay hidden to create the mystery.’ This gives the characters themselves reason within the text to avoid using it, which makes everything so much more authentic and real. It makes sense because it does, not because it has to for the plot.
• William promised not to steal anything. Twice, we see him reassuring and then reaffirming that he wouldn’t steal anything, and both times are in the presence of William Moriarty.
Tumblr media
If we want to take this statement in light of names, and toy with that lovely device foreshadowing, William having always shared the same first name would in fact mean that statement holds true — he did not steal William’s name; it was always his own to begin with, and Moriarty was a name given to him as part of his adoption, the same as it was given to Louis. He really didn’t steal anything, despite the fact that he was probably made to feel guilty or worthless every day because of the name he shared with William Moriarty.
This also means that William probably never actively deceived any of the townspeople, either; it really was just a case of mistaken identity which he manipulated for his own cause.
Tumblr media
The townspeople made the mistake, rather than William outright lying. William is, by trade, more of a master manipulator who turns situations to his advantage with his quick thinking, rather than straight up lying or deceiving people (see: The Merchant of London.)
• Sherlock saw his birth name but never mentions it. And still chooses to call him Liam. Yes, we might’ve had a conversation happen off screen. Yes, Sherlock might choose to do that because that name is sentimental and William has asked not to be called his true name for reasons unknown. But it would fit so beautifully if William really is his name, and Sherlock’s realisation that day when he read the birth records was that oh, so this — William ‘Smith’ — is Liam’s real name. Naturally, he would continue to call him Liam with no discussion needed, because it’s a shortened version of William.
• We have lots of characters who share the name William, but with different variations on the shortened version; another symbol of how people can be equal in some senses but also their identity can be individual to them also. William H Bonney is Billy the Kid, the mathematics genius William and Sherlock stumble upon in Durham is called Bill Hunt.
#4 — practicality and marketing.
People become attached to characters and their names, and there comes a certain point in a work where it’s very difficult to alter a character’s first name and still retain a fan base’s sense of identity for that character. Calling William say, Robert, from now on, or revealing that as his true name while we continue to see him referred to as William is all sorts of confusing, emotionally. Perhaps it’s just me. But the idea that I’ve been calling William the wrong name all along feels off and sad, whereas the knowledge that he’s at least been able to keep that part of himself consistent, when everything else has had to be an act, is actually really comforting and empowering.
I’d love to write another thought dump on why William being William all along is also, so very emotionally delicious when you explore the implications in the story; it’s heartbreaking and makes him an even more sympathetic character who I just wanna hug, so perhaps I’ll come back to this! Because re-reading those earlier chapters with this in mind really hurts so good.
Tumblr media
He stole nothing; he was always the true William, that at least is one thing that always belonged to him — it was only society and us that dictated there was one William worth knowing more — was more interesting and held more narrative power — than the other.
This is still William’s story.

Ok, LISTEN. I'm about half way through seven minuets in heaven pt.2, but because I'm working on it while watching season 2, I got SatoSugu on my mind. so...
Now Presenting...
Tumblr media
A little SatoSugu themed supplementary material.
Tumblr media
Ok, so let's start standard
Suguru is a psychology major with a minor in musical performance
Satoru is a theoretical physics major with no minor because "ew, minors."
Suguru joined the ABO frat because fraternity housing is wayyy fucking cheaper than living in the dorms. Plus, easy access to booze.
Gojo did it for the memes and cause his best friend was joining.
Suguru is for sure an alcoholic and in denial about it
Gojo smoked weed once and won't shut up about it. He does take a weak ass edible every once in awhile to sleep though.
Gojos tolerance is absolutely shit. Two shots and three puffs in and he is gone!
Suguru on the other hand could drink an entire bottle of tequila and smoke 12 joints and only really be kinda buzzed.
Suguru is definitely in denial about his bisexuality. Everything that he does with Gojo is just for female attention, ya know?
Especially when they're making out alone in their shared room. That's definitely for attention. Source:just trust me bro
Gojo is very comfortable in his pansexuality, and has been known to use "are you a frying pan? Cause you're so fucking hot" as a pickup line.
Ok, now for their background!
Suguru and Gojo actually grew up together, and are the closest anyone can get to childhood friends,
Which morphed into the well documented phenomenon of an all too intense friendship that blurs the line of friends and dating, where if one of them were the opposite gender they would totally be together, but because they’re both boys there using that as a shield to avoid confronting their identities beyond the default settings
They were each other's first kiss 💋
Gojo actually had really kind and loving parents who were very supportive.
Sugurus' mom died when he was young though, leaving him and his dad to struggle. His dad wasn't necessarily bad, but he did have to work constantly and therefore wasn't home often.
Gojo was naturally smart and school came very easy to him. Meanwhile, Suguru struggled a lot, specifically with anything math related.
This led to Gojo, with his great grades and generational wealth, being able to go to basically any college he wanted to.
He still decided to go to the local community College in the end, at least to get his gen-eds and the first few years of his major out of the way at a heavily discounted price.
Yea, Suguru had no such opportunity, his options were community College or to start working with his dad as a mechanic immediately.
And while he's not opposed to the idea of working with his father, and will even work with him for some extra spending money in the summers, he really wanted to give the whole higher education thing a shot.
He's very proud to be in his community College, as he's the first person in his family to even attempt to get a degree
Now, here's how they are in a relationship because you can't have just one.
These boys have historically shared everything: their hot wheels, their Xbox, their bed, and their women. You are no exception. Lucky you 💜💙
When it comes to the three of you together, you find the boys actually work extremely well as a unit.
Where one struggles, the other thrives. Gojo isn't great when it comes to emotional venting and stuff, always looking to "fix" it.
Suguru is better at actually listening and only offering advice when you ask. He’s always willing to just cuddle and listen.
Suguru is terrible to try and watch movies with, he gets bored so fast. Meanwhile Gojo is obsessed with movies.
Gojos fixer attitude also comes in clutch whenever you need to get something done, but just do not have it in you to do it. Need to call a doctor but have phone anxiety? Gojos your man.
Suguru craves to be the primary partner for both you and Gojo. Yes he's aware this is irrational, no he's not sure what to do about it. All he knows is that he gets jealous when he sees you with Gojo, and has to find ways to cope.
To his credit, he's never made this a problem for anyone other than himself, and he is actively working on it.
Gojo on the other hand fucking loves to see you and Suguru spending time together. Those are his two favorite people in the god damn world, aren't they cute?!
Sugurus love language is music. He'll make you playlists, old fashioned mix tapes, and has forced you to listen to vinyl with him. He's written songs about you too, though he's too shy to show them off.
Will play his guitar for you only when asked because he knows the optics of 'frat guy with a guitar' are not ideal.
Gojo shows his love by sharing his candy. Splitting a Kit Kat, giving you a handful of skittles, sharing a sleeve of oreos. If Gojo shares his sweets with you he wants to marry you.
They two of you bond by baking together. You buy new cute molds and cookware together and set up entire spreads based on one theme.
Suguru was probably the first one to be in your life: I.E. the one that you agreed to date before realizing (and agreeing to) the package deal.
But Gojo said I love you first. He feels everything at 100% and hides none of it.
He said it loudly and in front of the rest of the frat, showing you off to everyone.
When Suguru said it for the first time though, it was quiet; whispered to you late at night while you were curled up in his arms.
Both of the boys are massive cuddle bugs!
You call them Sugubear and Satotoro. Gojo loves it and Suguru does too, but he pretends he doesn't.

I’ve been kinda thinking this for a while because I know the dpxdc fandom likes thin as a bean and shouldn’t be capable of lifting Superman so easily, buff as a Viking, and as small but so much curves like his mom, Danny Fenton/Phantom.
And I love them all. For various reasons.
But I just thought about something really hard for a second.
Danny died at 14.
He died being small, and young. He became ecto-contaminated in a way so much more different from Vlad who had been blasted in the face by the smallest portion of ecto-portal that infected and corrupted into his skin.
This is in comparison to Danny who literally had a dimension rip open on top and inside of him.
To me, Vlad basically got the equivalent of a mini bomb exploding in his face and came out of it with severe third degree burns that translated into Ghost Acne.
And then we look at it again from their Ghost’s.
Danny’s ghost is that of a 14 year old boy who died in a cold portal in his parents basement.
Vlad who got blasted in college, was a twig and yet his ghost form is buff and aged just like his aged human body.
If he ‘died’ when he got hit by the mini-portal than his ghost would mimic the form he died in.
But he isn’t.
Instead we get Two different spectrums of a ghostly appearance for two halfa’s.
Ghosts who are meant to form as how they had been during the time of their death. Ghosts who will always be at their core the person they died as, the identity of those last seconds before death took them.
That’s the point of ghosts.
The only time it changes is if there are external third factors.
Such as Aragon’s Necklace. Or being able to use something of the living to ‘change shape’ as the Lunch Lady, or stretch yourself into a giant like Walker, and the greatest exception being Amorpho who HAS no identity to begin with. More than likely a thought that was made but never given anything further, and thus his jealousy with identity. Either that or he died never making a solid identity that could carry on into death, thus making him faceless because he didn’t even know who he truly was at that time of death.
Even Spectra is different! She’s more of a poltergeist-demon than an actual Ghost from the way she does things and even from how she looks in ghost form.
So with that, who is actually Human-Ghost and who just happens to be Ghost adjacent enough to get powers?
Danny is a real Halfa and Vlad is just mimicking one.
Now for the Dan, evil-phantom, of the fandom.
Dan is just BUFF.
He’s an adult. He GREW.
But it wasn’t due to Danny.
It was due to whatever he took from Vlad/Plasmius.
To me, Plasmius was just the ecto that resided in Vlad. All that anger and resentment that gave birth to itself from Vlad’s own anger at what he went through with the mini-portal. It was ecto that was residing in him, ecto from the Infinite Realms itself that was made INTO an idea and then given form.
Ecto that lived, Venom-style, in Vlad.
An idea that grew up with Vlad BECAUSE Vlad was growing up himself. He wasn’t thinking of himself as that scrawny college student anymore. He was becoming an adult so of course the ecto would mimic that idea of Vlad and make Plasmius older too.
Plasmius was a fairy tale that Vlad made up, and that’s why Dan was able to rip that part out of Vlad like it was it’s own true ghost. But it wasn’t, and so it collapsed without its person to control it. At least until Dan dove into the ecto and took the ideas that were there and intertwined himself with it.
Those YEARS of ideas isn’t so easily brushed away either, and even less so when Danny and Vlad had believed that Plasmius was Vlad’s ghost, a halfa just like Danny. So of course Dan would believe in the idea that he took/ate Vlad’s ghost. And that idea would spread because ecto is just another form of power and vitality. So of course that ecto should change Dan.
And then it did.
It changed his colors first and then eventually his physical form.
Thus we have Buff older Dan.
Now back to Danny.
With all that, this means that Phantom is never going to age.
Because Danny did die that day. He died, and only came back because the dimensional rip of ecto from the Infinite Realms tied his ghost neatly into his human body. The human body that just died.
He isn’t alive, his ghost that is tied to the body is simply puppeteering it. And as the Infinite Realms is literally all of time and space throughout every single multiverse in existence, it’s not too far of a shot to say that it could snatch that very moment, that heartbeat Danny craves restlessly, the heartbeat just before he truly died entirely.
Danny is a moment in time.
So his ghost will never age. And neither will his body.
Basically, Danny is forever an eternal 14 year old twig and he will be so very mad about it.

Penny poll Bracket 2 Finals
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Penny Lamb/Jane Doe (Legoland / Ride the Cyclone) vs
Penelope (The Odyssey)
Propaganda under the cut
Penny Lamb/Jane Doe (Legoland / Ride the Cyclone)
• Okay I am not the person to be propaganda making for her but she's so cool she died once and then came back she's also a bit uhh deranged is a good word
• Penny Lamb (and her younger brother Ezra) lived in a hippie weed growing commune until she was thirteen and snuck out to a walmart, eventually leading to the entire thing burning to the ground. Then they lived in a tiny town named Uranium City and she got relentlessly bullied and even set on fire until she was given a cd by another girl from a band called Seven Up. She formed a parasocial relationship with the singer, who then turned into a misogynistic rapper. She travelled from northern Saskatchewan to Florida to meet him and thank him for basically making her life tolerable and enjoyable, and then ended up tearing a chunk of flesh out of his face with her teeth all at the age of 15 years old. Two years later after a concert with her school choir, she was beheaded on a fair rollercoaster called the Cyclone, becoming a Jane Doe until she was voted back to life. While she was Jane Doe, she wore the head of a porcelain doll as to not freak the other kids out!
• she was born a hippie, she bites and maims a famous rapper with hot coffee, she has a little brother obsessed with german philosophy, she plays the ukulele, she has a fuck ass bob. she gets fucking DECAPITATED by a roller coaster but survives because she is so offputting. what else do you need in a woman
• Where do I START with Penny. Basically she grew up socially isolated on a community pot farm until the age of 13, where she and her brother ran away to Walmart and started pretending to revive him from seizures because of how much attention she got. She was eventually driven back home where the entire community was drug busted burned to the ground, their parents being arrested, friends taken away, entire home destroyed. Instead of being sent to foster care, she’s and her brother are sent to a catholic boarding school, where they live mostly unsupervised. Penny is relentlessly bullied for supposedly being a lesbian, and diagnosed as bipolar and manic depressive while her brother (three years younger than her) sells his adhd medication to college kids to make ends meet. Soon after having her backpack lit on fire by bullies, she starts to fall into a deep depressive episode, not coming out of her room for days, until a catholic girl takes pity on her, and gives her a hiphop/boyband CD for her to listen to called 7-up (important later). Penny obsessed on the lead singer Johnny moon to an unhealthy degree until the band breaks up and Johnny rebrands to JK47, a misogynist gangster rapper who penny can’t stand. Penny and her brother run away from middle of knowwhere Canada to Florida to meet him so penny can win him back and remind him of how much she loves him and how cool he used to be. This doesn’t go well, as he doesn’t drop his gangster persona, calling her the same insult all her previous bullies did, leading to her throwing hot coffee on him, tearing a chunk off flesh out of his face with her teeth, and subsequently being arrested and later out on probation. Penny ALSO gets her own movie (in the play) and tells the audience this very story in a presentation with goofy puppets. Penny’s story is funny and absurd but at the same time incredibly tragic and heartbreaking. She also appears in ride the cyclone where she’s revealed to be the identity of Jane Doe (who had her head cut off before she was found dead in the rollercoaster accident with the other choir kids and was therefor never identified)
• she is a femamist lesbian and I am in love with her
• She's known as Jane Doe throughout the musical because she doesn't know who she is in death, her head is a doll's head because she lost her real one in the rollercoaster disaster that killed all the characters, she's the one who wins the prize of coming back from death which is when we learn her true name Penny. Her song is absolutely *beautiful* (The Ballad of Jane Doe) and she is the Penny of all time because I love her
• Girlie already lost her head we can’t take her victory too :(
Penelope (The Odyssey)
• She waited about 20 years for her husband to come home she used her huge brain to keep the suitors away for ages I just think she's neat
• She is LOYAL. She is SMART. She is HARDWORKING. She waited for TWENTY YEARS. Penelope is a QUEEN (literally). PENELOPE SWEEP

Do you think Hawks will die to save Toga?
Personally, I wouldn't like it if either of them died. Like, the potential narrative payoff here would be strongest if both of them lived, imo. I would rather see a situation where Keigo donates just enough blood to stabilize them both, rather than a situation where one person completely exsanguinates themselves and leaves behind a rash of trauma and unresolved feelings in the person they "saved."
I'm definitely not the best when it comes to Hawks meta, but I'll try my best to break down my personal feelings on why I feel both Keigo and Himiko need to live in order to "break the cycle":
1. You Can Start Over. I'll Help You.
Tumblr media
This one's the biggest, most obvious point in favor of them both living imo. Hawks made an offer to help Jin start over, but rescinded that offer and immediately went for the kill the moment Jin showed signs of resistance. This was Keigo's biggest failure as both a hero and as an individual, and something he has yet to atone for.
In turn, Himiko believes there are no second chances-- that her only options are death or being locked away forever. So, she chooses death. She needs someone to offer her a third option.
The set up is there.
Tumblr media
There's also the matter of Keigo and Himiko both stating that they want an "easier world" as their core motivation, and both of them state that they want to be the ones who help make that world.
Their goals only sound simplistic on the surface and serve as a mask for their respective traumas, but... ultimately, a world that's easier for Himiko to live in (where she is consensually given blood by someone who loves her and she is allowed to give her blood back to the world in return) is a world where heroes can finally take it easy-- because it's a world that nips the endless creation of its own "villains" in the bud, through unified acts of compassion and understanding.
Both characters have caused others intense pain and hurt others in their attempts to take shortcuts to the creation of an "easier world"-- Hawks is the hero that's "too fast," and Himiko is also associated with her near-supernatural speed. They're both too impatient and want the quickest possible results. Having both Himiko and Keigo living and learning the "right way" to create their ideal world-- and then, getting to be a part of that world as they both continue to atone-- feels much more meaningful than having one or both of them die before they can see that future reach fruition.
2. The Big, Suicidal Elephant in the Room
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The majority of the LOV members all struggle with suicidal ideation-- Touya wants to set everything Endeavor ever chose over him ablaze, and he wants that inferno to also serve as his funeral pyre. Tomura has got a dissertation's worth of issues regarding his own mortality and self-perception/identity, and his whole "let's-just-destroy-it-all/we-don't-need-a-future-actually-lol" schtick has always been a symptom rather than a legit proposal for a cure. Himiko wants to disappear into the identities of the people she loves, because the world treats her a little more kindly when she isn't "Toga Himiko." The LOV trio's arcs all revolve around "death of the self" to some degree. (That said... resurrection and rebirth are also heavy themes within Tenko, Touya, and Himiko's arcs, soooo....)
Keigo also struggles with suicidal ideation and places the worth of his own life far, far, faaaaar below that of everyone else.
This has already been said, and shouldn't really need to be said in the first place, but-- people have every right to feel uncomfortable and criticize a story that attempts to validate suicidal characters by portraying their suicide in a noble/redemptive light.
Next!
3. It's All About All Mi-- Err..... Tomie?
Tumblr media
"I was fine with that-- not saving her, turning my back on her. Me, who claims he wants to help people." - Hawks, about Tomie.
"I tried to go about things the right way" is a good line that touches on one of the core conflicts of Keigo's character: He suppresses so much of his natural instinct to do good so he can do "right."
Keigo knows in his heart of hearts that "the right way" doesn't save people like his mother, it didn't save Jin, and it's not going to save Himiko. He's been groomed into upholding the society and status quo that caused him and Tomie to nearly fall through the cracks in the first place-- and I've always found it both fascinating and sad that Keigo seems to equate choosing "the right way" (i.e. becoming a hero) to abandoning his mother. Keigo effectively being *sold* to the HPSC is what took Tomie off of the streets and gave her a roof over her head-- it gave her "a chance to start over." But Keigo doesn't seem to view this as true saving. With that in mind, his attempt to "save" Jin by essentially giving him the same offer the HPSC gave Tomie was always doomed end in failure.
Tumblr media
Keigo: "My mother feared punishment for harboring a criminal, so she took me and ran."
Tomie first ran out of fear of being arrested after Takami Thief was captured-- which led to both her and Keigo being homeless for an extended period of time. She ran again after Dabi/Touya threatened her for information on Keigo, this time out of fear of her son-- a son who had became synonymous with "the law" she feared so much in her eyes. She can't bear facing him after her betrayal and implicitly fears punishment/condemnation from him (even though Keigo had *no* intention of punishing her)-- Tomie readily leaves behind the "normal" home and "normal" life that Hawks obtained for her through "doing things the right way," bc the imaginary threat of punishment and condemnation is something that comes across as worse for her. This only further convinces Keigo that he failed to save his mother, even though he's the one who's being betrayed and hurt by her.
I can't help seeing similarities between Tomie & Himiko's decisions to run out of an intense fear of punishment/imprisonment, and how this inevitably ties to Keigo. Keigo subconsciously realizes that he can't truly save people like Tomie, Jin, or Himiko as "Hawks" because "Hawks" is part of the problem. He longs to save others as himself-- as "Takami Keigo" (which is why the loss of his quirk kind of has me like "👀 👀 👀 whatcha gonna do next, turkey boy...,,..👀 👀 " )
Tumblr media
As an aside, I seem to recall that transhawks made a few meta post where they talk about how there are traces of Jin's design in Tomie (esp her eyes, which have the same dead-eyed thousand yard stare) and that their resemblance is likely intentional (edit: link to one post pointing the resemblance out)-- It's not as overt, but imo, Himiko also resembles Tomie (just a little!) when she has her hair down.
Anyway! Both Jin and Himiko dying after Keigo A) has spent his whole life agonizing about how his own mother wasn't able to survive in their current society, B) has expressed guilt about how he didn't even try to save her and didn't make attempts to involve himself in her life, C) has talked at length about he wanted to be "more like Bubaigawara" and then proceeded to roleplay him, badly, for a good third of Act 3 (ohhhh boy ☠️☠️☠️), and D) had demanded that Toga be killed immediately after she arrives in Gunga, only for Ochako and Tsuyu to explicitly challenge and reject the idea that killing was the only option available.... idk, Himiko dying while Keigo does nothing would just feel massively incoherent at this point??
TL;DR The resolution to Keigo's arc currently hinges on addressing his origin, his identity, his guilt, and his ties to these three characters. Keigo feels that he failed with Tomie, and he explicitly failed with Jin-- and I personally don't think his arc can have a satisfactory ending without addressing those failures through Himiko, or without him trying to right where he went wrong by helping her in some capacity. This is a chance for him to finally follow his innate drive to do good over doing what their society dictates as "right."
----
All that being said, if Hori did decide to have Hawks sacrifice himself: Hawks choosing to sacrifice himself because he wants to believe in the future that the hero kids are creating and wants to believe that children like Himiko have a place in that future feels WAAAY more tonally consistent with mha's themes than Himiko choosing to sacrifice herself because she doesn't think she has a future
One message is about healing and hope and belief, the other is about failing to truly save someone who was already suicidal from their inevitable self destruction.
MHA has been defining true saving as "going above and beyond" for hundreds of chapters now-- true saving means saving a person's heart, body, and soul. It means giving them a future. By mha's own definitions, Himiko choosing to kill herself means she wasn't saved. Pure and simple-- You can't save the heart but not the body/soul (Himiko), you can't save the soul but not the body/heart (Touya), and you can't save the body but not the heart/soul (Tomura). There's a lot more work to be done here-- but that's fine, bc MHA has never depicted true saving or true healing as some magical, instantaneous thing. (#recoverygirldni)

Silly fic idea incoming again... Sorry...
Kinda Spider-Man/MCU/Superhero AU
Bradley as kind of Spider-Man, Jake as the Human Torch?? Plus identity porn because I'm a sucker for it
Bradley was raised by Mav and Ice after his mom passed away when he was around 12 — Maverick and Iceman are part of a group ala Avengers, Goose was more or less Mav's Bucky (minus the whole born in 1940s thing obviously) and died in action when Bradley was two.
There are very few people who know about Mav and Ice and Bradley's relationship, most of whom are the people from the superhero business that are close friends with the Avengers.
And like, Bradley doesn't have any superpowers so he knows he can't really go in his parents steps, but he can join SHIELD which Avengers are kind of part of, and kind of be a part of family tradition (especially that Goose was an agent too, originally).
Of course, this is when shit hits the fan. Mav interferes with Bradley's recruitment, instead stirring him so he goes to uni and tries again after getting a degree, which absolutely backfires on everyone when Bradley finds out why he got rejected for training.
Bradley moves out to share an apartment in Queens with other Columbia students — Natasha, Javy, Bob, and Jake — and goes low contact with Mav and Ice. He gets an internship at Oscorp (mostly to spite Ice, who hates the company) and the whole incident with the radioactive spider happens.
Before he knows it, he stops a mugging (without the costume still) and thus Spider-Man is born. It takes him about a year to establish some sort of superhero brand, even if he is a vigilante with an identity unknown to anyone — not the Avengers, not the SHIELD — he's pretty much a common and welcome by the New Yorkers sight.
Jake is the youngest from the Seresin-Machado family (yes, his and Javy's sister/brother are married), who despite getting superpowers in freak space accident, was forced to go to university by his older sister before actually starting a superhero career in full. He's been named Human Torch by the public but aside from the very beginning of the Seresin-Machado family fighting some Doom-like villain, he hasn't been active.
Bradley used to have kind of a crush on Jake — he was very charming, and very hot (in more than one meaning of the word), and an upcoming superhero with a strong moral compass, and seemed like someone who Bradley could easily fall in love with.
Jake, however, seemed to hate him at first sight. He'd only talk to Bradley if their friend group was all together at first, and he'd always try to get a raise from Bradley in one way or another and the charm would be never ever directed at Bradley. Even after close to two years living together, Jake is usually meaner and more snarky with him than he is with anyone else.
Then Spider-Man gets into a fight with some supervillain close to their group's common study place — and Spider-Man gets an unauthorised assist from the Human Torch. They fight well together, their banter and jokes are pleasant and they have a really good teamwork going on. Jake gives Bradley (or Spider-Man) a compliment for the first time and it's nice, it's what Bradley wished for the whole goddamn time.
It's less nice when he's Bradley again and all Jake can talk about is Spider-Man. It's even less nice when Nat, fed up, asks Jake if he's got a crush on Spidey and his whole face turns bright red.
Since that time, Jake also makes his personal mission to get to know Spider-Man and figure out his identity — he randomly flies up to Spider-Man during patrols, turns on the charm to a 120% and flirts with Spidey like crazy. He seems to be adamant that he and Spider-Man are made for each other, which Bradley knows is a bull of crap because Jake hates Bradley The Roommate.
So now Bradley listens to Jake blubbering about how great Spidey is as Bradley while being despised by Jake in the very same conversations and constantly tries to avoid Human Torch's flirting attempts as Spider-Man, knowing very well that Jake hates the actual him.
On top of everything, Maverick and Iceman have finally decided that they have enough of watching away from their Tower and are trying to find out Spider-Man's identity, afraid that he might be some kind of a threat to NYC. So Bradley not only has to fight crime while being flirted with by his crush who doesn't even know it's him, but also constantly needs to ditch different drones and agents that try to follow him around.

(10/5) prompt: eerie — 1,436 words (literal haunted house date night; 0/10, james does not recommend - cw: talk of death/murder, ghosts, general creepy weirdness) @jegulus-microfic
James is a weak, weak man, he’s decided.
Because, here’s the thing: ghost stories? He can usually laugh them off; he’s got no real life experience with the concept of the supernatural or the dead sticking around with the living. He’s watched movies, seen some stories told online, but there’s a degree of separation from them, you know? A screen. A promise that it’s not actually happening to him.
But now? Now there’s no screen, no separation; he’s walking right through one. Checking out an old abandoned house that’s supposedly haunted by the family that died there isn’t at all James’ idea of a romantic evening, but there he is. All because Regulus batted his pretty eyelashes at him with his lip caught between his teeth. All because Regulus hit him at just the right moment with a sweetly murmured ‘please, baby, I want to check it out.”
Ergo, James is a fucking weak man, because he’d been powerless to say no to his boyfriend in the moment.
The old floor of the 19th century mansion creaks beneath their every step. It’s clear that very few other people have been brave enough to enter the blocked off old home —there’s a thin layer of dust coloring everything a muted grey beneath the blue-white glow of the moon slanting through partially-boarded windows. There’s still furniture covered in moth-eaten sheets in each room they pass, too.
It’s eerie, how there’s still a whole life left behind there, despite the fact that it’s been ages since anyone called the place home. James swallows through a tight throat as he follows at Regulus’ side, each of them with their phone in hand, flashlights on. Regulus is too excited, even as he tries to disguise it —an unstoppable enthusiasm in his continued curiosity about all things spooky and strange when he peers through every doorway to see what’s there.
“How are you not freaking out right now?” James asks, whispering on instinct.
“It’s just a house,” Regulus replies at a normal volume, shrugging.
He points his flashlight up at a family portrait hanging over the fireplace in the musty-smelling library that they’ve entered. A man and woman stand stiff-backed behind two identical twin daughters in the painting, five years old at most. The mother has distant eyes and a forced smile on her face while the father looks too serious, obviously tense. The two little girls both smile, one with teeth, one tight-lipped; the only thing that seems to notably set them apart.
James swears that when he takes a small step to the left that all four pairs of eyes follow him. Oh, he’s going to throw up.
“What happened here, again?” He asks. Hates himself for doing so, but his own curiosity can’t seem to be helped.
“Winifred Manning went mad after having her daughters. She’d been told by a doctor she wouldn’t survive having one child, much less two. She ended up convincing herself not long after their birth that they were sent as an omen from the devil,” Regulus explains calmly, head tilting as he looks up at the painted family. “She tried to kill them.”
James gulps. “Tried to?”
“Well, suppose she was successful eventually, considering,” Regulus says. “She tried to poison them for a little while, but the nanny caught on, told her husband, Nicholas.”
James stares at the tense-looking man in question, wondering if he wasn’t looking so uneasy in the pose for the family portrait because he knew. Knew what his wife thought, knew she was trying to get rid of their children.
“So how did they actually die then?” Again, James hates that he’s asking, but he’s clearly blocked out the couple other times Regulus has told him bits of this story before coming here.
“Well, ultimately she drowned them in the bath.” Regulus delivers the news so casually, ignoring the way James winces. “Just left them in the water afterward and returned to playing the piano in the sitting room, that’s where Nicholas found her when he came home. Then he heard the water left running upstairs, found the girls there. And in a madness of his own, having his daughters taken from him and knowing his wife was insane, he stabbed Winifred to death.”
“Jesus,” James wheezes.
“Not a lot of that here, I’m afraid,” Regulus snorts.
It might be a good joke if James weren’t feeling chilled down to the bone at present.
“What happened to Nicholas after all that?” Evidently he’s just going to keep digging himself deeper.
“He hung himself in the attic,” Regulus answers simply. He turns from the fireplace and shines the beam of his phone’s flashlight over the covered furniture leading toward the attached sitting room. “Now people think this place is cursed. That because of the nature of their deaths and the madness they all stemmed from that their spirits just… stayed here. That’s why no one’s touched it in a couple decades.”
“And you wanted to come here?” James lets out a nervous sounding laugh.
Regulus glances at him over his shoulder, lips curled in a smirk. “You’re terrified right now, aren’t you?”
“The fact that you’re not is also of concern to me, but we’ll address that at a later time.” James can’t help the way his lips twitch when Regulus laughs at that.
Turning to face him, Regulus tucks his lit up phone in his back pocket and steps closer. He smooths both hands up and down James’ chest, head tilted back slightly to be able to look up at him.
“I never did thank you properly for coming with me,” Regulus murmurs.
James gives a tilted nod of his head. “True.”
“Should I do that, you think?”
“Here? Now?” James chuckles, nerves still present in the sound. “Bit disrespectful, don’t you think?”
“I think if the ghosts were actually still around, they’d have let us know by now.”
“Okay, hate that you just put that thought in my head.”
“Let me distract you, then.”
Regulus lifts one hand to rest at James’ jaw, easing up on his toes to bring their lips together. And honestly, James does have to give it to him —it fucking works, it’s an excellent distraction. Hard to be afraid of ghosts when his free hand is curling around Regulus’ hip. Hard to be worried about much of anything when Regulus is trailing his tongue over his lower lip before licking right into his mouth.
His hand moves from Regulus’ hip to slide along the small of his back, encouraging him to arch his back the smallest bit. Regulus hums into James’ mouth the moment their bodies press firmly together, his arms both looping securely around the back of James’ neck. A cool breeze passes outside, cutting through shoddily boarded windows and making James shiver just as much as the feel of Regulus sinking his fingers into his hair.
But then, distantly, there’s the tinkling sound of a piano. A slowly building sound that travels along the high and low keys in a melody somehow both pretty and eerie at the same time. It’s Regulus tensing in the curl of his one arm that tells James it’s not just his looming anxiety making him think he hears it. It’s real. Regulus clearly hears the piano, too.
They ease back from kissing, wide hazel eyes on Regulus’ face as his dark brow furrows for a long, anxious moment. The piano continues to play. Sounds like it’s in the next room over; the sitting room attached to the library.
“If this is a joke, it’s not funny,” James whispers shakily, some small part of his brain hoping that it is that simple. That his boyfriend thought it would be hilarious to play a prank on him, hide a speaker in the other room before they came —James might even be proud of him for it after the initial terror wears off.
“James, that’s not me…” Regulus whispers back, grey eyes staring past him, over James’ shoulder toward the open doorway into the room the piano seems to be playing from.
There’s a sudden loud creak followed by a thud upstairs, a door thrown open maybe, that makes them both jump. The piano continues, undisturbed, in the other room. Past the rush of his heart in his ears, James thinks he can hear running water now, the pitter patter of dripping on the hardwood floor above them.
Regulus fists a hand in the front of James’ sweatshirt, yanking as he hurries out of the library the way they came in. “Alright, time to go.”
“Yeah. Yep. Yes, absolutely.”

warnings : angst with comfort, heavy spoilers, self blame, sunshine reader
reiner awoken from another nightmare, jolting from his bed as he looked outside his window. oh, the war is over and freedom is guaranteed (for now). as one of the formers warriors of marleyan, he has nothing but regrets of his past, having horrible dreams and nightmares of the people he has killed when he first wrecked the wall. he sighed and held his head, another day to live while being haunted by his own doings.
he managed to find silence in the city, looking for a quiet place before he dies peacefully because he inherited the Nine. he wishes to suffer as much as the people he has inflicted suffering on, punishing himself to a degree where he thinks he's unforgivable. he walked outside the small cottage that he has built, a lake where he spends his days spread in front of him. but today, he noticed a figure crouched down at the bay of the lake. strange, considering he was located far from society.
"may i help you?" he asked gently as you turned around, a basket in hand and a scarf on your head "hello! i'm assuming you're the owner of the lovely cottage? i'm sorry, i got a little lost while i was chasing butterflies and ended up here so i kinda don't know where i am" you smiled, trying to hide your clumsiness that ended you here. reiner looked at you and saw nothing but a ray of sunshine, a fresh air and nothing but a innocent woman. your eyes were shining with life while his was dead, how different were you two.
"yes, the town is downside of north" he said and you grunted "i'm so sorry.. could you show me? i'm horrendous at directions" you almost plead "if you don't want to, that's okay!" you smiled "i don't want to burden you further" he quickly said "it's okay, let me change my clothes. please, come in." he urged you to come in his cottage as you looked in awe "such a beautiful home! did you built it?" you asked as he vanished to change clothes "yes, from scratch"
your eyes almost bulged in surprise "you're so talented!" reiner's hand on his shirt's button stopped, no one has talked this tenderly to him. "I wished I could do a good job like yours!" your sincere tone was visible from behind the door as he tried not to cry from the comforting words so he cleared his throat and came out from the room "thankyou, you didn't had to say that. i'm sure you're also a talented woman. shall we?" he said, showing the door as you nodded and walked out, him following closely.
upon arriving at town, you turned to him with gratefulness in your face "thankyou! I didn't catch your name?" reiner almost flinched at your obliviousness. he was intending to lie, to let you in the dark about this identity but he has done that in the past. he won't do it again.
"reiner braun" he said, almost vulnerable but he saw you smiled "reiner.. i'm y/n! i hope we get to see each other again, until then. bye bye!" you went your own ways, bidding goodbye with a smile that left his heart pounding and for once, alive. the next day, he purposely came to town again (something he rarely does) for one specific person, you. he silently looked through stores, just a glimpse of you is already enough. at a dining cafeteria, he sat at a table alone while looking outside. he strangely misses you and wishes to see you again but caught no sight of you at all, it was difficult to not sigh. "welcome to- reiner?" he looked up and there you are. in your full glory and a uniform with that usual warm smile you always had that it shined through him. "y/n? i thought i lost you" he blurted as you laughed "lost me? i never left here" you smiled, his heart aching and yearning for comfort.
he grunted "uh, y/n. this might be.. fast but can i possibly ask you on a date tonight?" he said, trying not to stutter and leave a decent first impression. your eyes widened and gleamed with a specific excitement "oh! i'd love that, reiner!" he managed to smile, how he feels his heart is full again despite all these years of pain. decades of guilt. that night, he bought you dinner to a nice place where you two had good food. apparently, you came to marleyan using the planes, just after the rumbling. you mentioned how terrifying it must've felt for the people also for the people who has stopped them. reiner listened intently as he felt like barging in, saying that he's the armored titan. your spoon dropped "you cant- are you truly?"
"yes, y/n. i inherited the armored titan and is doomed to die for several more years. and i shall die with my titan powers" he said, a bit relieved to get it out from his chest. "reiner, you're so.. cool" you said softly, it made him flinch again. "c-cool?"
"i understand how you feel. i understand how it feels to live in guilt but reiner. you have limited time, will you spend these last years hating yourself?" you found a courage to ask him as his breathing hitched "i- y/n.. i.. i have done many wrong things.. unforgivable.. i'll be damned in hell for what i have done.. these.. powers.." he sniffled, looking down to his hands "these powers bares a heavy responsibility" dinner went awkwardly for the rest of the night however he can't help but feel much better than he usually does. he was able to speak about his guilts better and express himself better. things ended up back at your house where you welcomed him, something he hasn't felt for so long.
"please, make yourself comfortable" you said gently, taking off his coat for him and hanging it. "would you like something to drink? some snacks?" you asked gently "i think i had enough desserts but i can't decline a lady's offer" he softly smiled, looking into your shining eyes as you smiled "i'll bring out the cookies then."
fresh baked cookies are on the table as you placed two mugs of tea in front of him, sitting beside him. the silence was both comforting and confusing as you tried to dig on some words to initiate. "thankyou, y/n." you looked at him "for what?" he looked into your gentle eyes, found peace in your existence. "for showing me that.. that kindness still exists" he genuinely smiled and as you blushed "y-you're welcome" your cheeks were warm as he shifted closer to you, watching your lips. you noticed and also leaned to him when eventually your lips met. it was fireworks, as cliche as it sounded. reiner never thought something could be so soft, yet another person's lips. he found a steady pace on the kiss, placing his hands gently on your neck to guide you as you let him because it felt so perfect. so right.
when he finally let go, both of you were panting. you stared into his eyes as licked your lips "reiner, can i help you?" you asked, voice almost inaudible "help me with what?" you caressed his cheek "with the pain. let me take all your pain away, let me hold you" you said as his lips quivered. it was a moment of vulnerability as he hugged you, face buried on your shoulders as you caressed his dirty blonde hair. he sobbed, saying incoherent words all while your hands hold him, something no one has ever done.
not even his own mother.
your shirt is wet due to his uncontrollably sobs and you gently placed a kiss on his temple. "let your past go, reiner. let it go" you soothingly said.
one thing lead to another and you found yourself kissing the former warrior with tears staining his cheeks while you caressed his jaw. it was slow but meaningful as you bought him comfort and warmness. he found peace in you and he intends to stay here. your lips trailed to his neck and sucked the flesh gently as he swallowed his saliva, bobbing his Adam's apple. "y/n.. you don't have to.." he said with a strained voice, hands struggling to not grab your hips to ground on his crotch. he wants you to take your time even if it meant he had to wait.
you shook your head "it's okay, i want to" you said with lustful eyes that reiner gulped again. you slowly took off your top, revealing your undergarments "reiner, would you want me to continue?" you asked as he gripped your hips "y-yes.. do anything you'd like..." he struggled to gaze upon you, concerned that he'll bust the moment he does.
you two moved to the bed, hands tangled in each other's hair as you yanked his pants down. "y/n.. i.. i'm.. you won't go right? you'll stay right?" he was vulnerable and weak, a side he wasn't able to show all these years. all the pent up feelings were harbored as you smiled to him "never, reiner. never" you whispered, pushing your undies aside to sink on his dick. he groaned as you took a slow pace, hands tightly on your hips "so good.. reiner, you can hold on me.." you raised your hips, your pussy sucking his cock back like it was always meant to be there. like he was home.
"can i be with you forever? marry you? make you the mother of my children?" he looked at you who's riding on his dick, hands steady on his abs for stability "yes.. i do want that" you smiled as he smiled as well, finally being able to find peace and happiness. he sat up, thrusting up to your warm cunt, hands slithering to your clitoris and you yelped "wait!" you squealed as he kept a steady pace with his thrust and his rubbing that you came with a moan while he kept thrusting. "thankyou.. y/n" he painted your insides white, holding you so you won't fall.
"thank you."

Oliver Banks is truly the character ever.
He predicted when people were going to die. His ex of six years ate notebooks and had his identity supernaturally stolen. He had an undergraduate degree at the London School of Economics. He was black. He predicted his fathers death. He saw death as black tentacles. His statement was basically an HR report. He stole a dead man's identity and basically held a group of researchers hostage just so he could get some good sleep. He died by satellite impact (he got better). He worked at a crystal and tarot shop. He was threatened of smiting because he woke a guy up from a coma and his bf got jel. He was described as handsome. He's one of the characters listed as status unknown. He was even queer.

I have to say, Ghost!Robin has me quite curious.
Dialog snippet, please?
Also, I love your writing, can't wait to see what your wrinkly brain comes up with next
Ghost!Robin is one I've written quite a bit for, though I haven't transferred it over to AO3 yet. You can find Part 1 here.
The summary, Jazz and Jason are meeting and decide to have a dinner at Wayne Manor to officially meet all of each other's relatives. That's everyone for Jason, but just Danny for Jazz.
Danny is the Ghost King and wants this night to be normal. He spent a full month preparing to get the one single evening free of any ghost business and he's psyched.
But the moment he sees Jason, all he can pay attention to is the ghost of the dead Robin that's hanging off his shoulders. So he tries to go through the introductions and dinner without letting on that he's seeing a literal ghost and it's working great. Until Robin outs everyone's secret identities. Then the cat's out of the bag.
I'm afraid I don't have any of the next arc written yet. And there's some things I don't want to share because ~*spoilers*~. But, I can go into how the Jason-Robin situation happened in the first place!
So, when Jason came back, his ghost was still separated from his body. Per the comics, he was mindless and had no memories and spent months in a Gotham hospital before Talia discovered him. She then took him and tried to nurse him back to health and when that didn't work, she dipped him in a Lazarus pit. The Lazarus pit rushed in and filled the parts of Jason that were empty because his ghost was not in his body. But with his body alive again and some semblance of his mind, his ghost was dragged back to the living world. Because the two pieces of who he was - his soul and his body - will forever be tied.
However, since the Lazarus pit filled the places that were empty, there wasn't room for Jason's ghost to reunite with his body properly. It's why his Lazarus rage didn't fade the way it normally does. Most people who are revived with the pits, they haven't been separated from their ghost as long as Jason. And the ghost can just slide back into their body. His ghost got all the bits of him that were hopeful and bright. The parts that made Robin magic in Jason's eyes. Because that is who he was before his brutal murder. And the Jason who was forced to go on living with the pits inside of him is the boy who was murdered and has all the baggage that entails. But because his ghost is no longer part of him, he can't remember how he used to be filled with hope. Or, well he can remember, but he is disconnected from those emotions. He remembers feeling like that, but it's impossible for him to regain those emotions because they're locked in his ghost and his ghost isn't part of him anymore.
And eventually it's been years. Jason has grown and changed so much as a person that, even if the pits were removed from him entirely, the spaces left wouldn't fit the boy he'd been when he died. Some of his anger is artificial, but a lot of it isn't. And the boy who believed Robin made him magic and had wonder and wanted to get an English degree... well, he can't just take all that back as-is and be back to that kid anymore. Too much has happened.
So part two will be about how Jason and Ghost!Robin manage to reunite themselves into one person. Even though their edges no longer fit together the way they did.
Thanks for asking about this one! It's still a favorite of mine.
