Koun wasn't sure where the conversation had gone for it to end up here.

"....Monster, huh?"

The words....they stung. Did Zack really think that Koun was...what, 'Hero Material'? The thought of it almost made him laugh.....if not for the bile that rose in the back of his throat. He pushed it down, refusing to look at the Soldier as he did so. Carefully schooled expression plastering itself on his face.....so very different than the grin he normally wore.

And yet, he still couldn't stop himself from laughing. A hollow sounding laugh that echoed around him.

Laughing at the down right absurdity that had just come from the man's mouth. Laughing at the very idea that he, of all people, would be seen as a hero. Him! A selfish, bloodstained creatures such as him, a hero? Maybe....maybe at one time he viewed himself as such. But now? After everything?

Koun was far closer to a monster than Zack.

"You.....do you really see me as a hero type? That's a load of shit, and you know it. Aren't you SOLDIERs supposed to be the heroes around here?"

He pointed at Zack once he got his bearings from the laughing fit the other had given him....pressing his index finger against the other's chest.

"You claim to be a monster, but would a monster go out of his way to help those around him? Would a monster help the lady down the street as you did earlier? Would a monster be willing to go out to make the streets safer as you do?" Each question was punctuated with a slightly more forceful poke in the chest.....gold filtering into storm grey hued eyes as Koun's control over his emotions shifted. "The answer is no."

He paused briefly, and pulled his hand away, stuffing them in his sleeve and looking away.

"....If anything, I'm more of a monster than you. I'm always on the sidelines. Always letting things pass me by. I don't actively work to help those around me, only focus on things that possibly interest me. I've lost that piece of myself in the throws of time, and there may not be a way for me to get it back." He was being strangely open, and yet also vauge. Giving bits of information about himself that he normally kept locked away but not enough to pin much down. "While you on the other hand....despite the moniker of your title, you work to better the lives around you. Looking for the right answer, even if you know that you might not like the answer you get. You're always making sure those around you are safe, cared for. You have a reason to keep going."

"Mine's....been lost for a long time."

𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐎𝐌 𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐒

01. MAIN - the spirit of the former high priestess and wielder of the millennium ring, mana has manifested back into the form of the dark magician girl. despite the tragedy that followed her past life, she continues to live on as an ancient spirit wandering throughout multiple worlds. naturally she gained many apprentices throughout the centuries, and eventually she would settle down in the dominion of the beast. although her childhood friends have reawakened, mana chooses to continue on with her mission and remain the keeper of atlantis ancient secrets.

02. APPRENTICE - follows the journey of apprentice mana, someone who is considered both careless and carefree. she is the proud disciple of a great dark magician, and cultivated meaningful friendships inside the royal palace. she is fairly young, with the tragedy of zorc occurring when she was 15 years of age. nevertheless, she cherishes her friendship with the prince and her master. biologically speaking, mana was born from an affair between a renown palace mage and a visiting european diplomat. her biological father had since left egypt, leaving behind her mother to raise her. mana inherited her mother's affinity with magic, where she was fortunately raised within the palace walls. although her mother had eventually passed away, mana was permitted to study and remain in the palace.

03. HIGH PRIESTESS - although she had originally left the palace to make peace with the tragedy, mana would eventually make her return. several years later, she accepts a position in pharaoh set's inner circle and is granted the millennium ring. as a high priestess mana entertains a vast number of responsibilities, many of which involved the reconstruction of egypt, prayers to the great gods, and the complete support of the current king's reign. of course, with the power of a millennium item at her disposal, this is mana's most powerful form. she is no longer the same irresponsible apprentice. instead she is much more mature, driven, and dedicated to her position as a sacred guardian.

04. ATLANTIS - mana is an old soul and before she was born in ancient egypt, her spirit had resided in the vessel of an atlantean priestess. her connection with the dominion of the beast is proof to why she would ultimately chooses to remain in this realm as opposed to her egyptian afterlife. this verse is still pending, but overall she bestie with atlantean mai. i don't make the rules. except atlantean priestess mana is just as valid as high priestess mana. she's a holy maiden, who would have thought lol.

05. MODERN - she probably isn't a duelist lol. she's just vibing i guess. although in all honesty, she probably would have come from a european family. i would need some time to think about her modern role, but for now she is just a foreigner who probably ended up living in domino city due to circumstance. she probably still has traces of her affinity with magic, but is currently unable to utilize it. as a former guardian of the millenium ring tho, she probably can still sense it and the other millenium items. just think of her as an NPC.

I just realized we can do the weird thing on apple phones and have different home screens/app layouts for different headmates.

Like instead of each of us changing the Home Screen like every. Single. Fucken. Day. We can just have different shortcuts saved for the most frequent fronters :D

Interlude of silence follows thereafter ( she means to make him steep in the queerness of his words , to recognize the oddness of them , but she gets the sense he is not like most for he does not seem to care for those discomforts as would others ) ; nothing passes ‘tween them save for the characteristically raucous din of the tavern they’ve come to occupy ( not her usual choice of haunt , though these ports rarely had much privacy otherwise & sacrifices must be endured if one sought reprieve from weathered / wearied fancies ) . The immortal takes her piece of silence to wonder what had possessed this man to sit with her in the first place , for verily she did n o t at all appear the sort to be welcoming ; a foreign creature , a powerful entity— By all accounts and accredits , the LAST OF HER KIND . And just w h a t business did she have here if not to indulge the potential of company and conversation ⸺

Nay ! Such is not true !

But how v a i n of her to assume she was unreachable ; to think she was entirely unapproachable. Perhaps she need try HARDER to set the barrier , to put the divide ‘tween herself and these mortals ( would that not be for the best ? ) . Yet a smaller , much more dormant part of her rises to contest her ever-isolated rituals , stands – for once – to say : this is a moment to change course , we should seize the opportunity , we should take the chance— ! Quick is the she-beast to SILENCE & SMOTE the insolence of this miniscule voice.

Begone with you , Lhore wants to say ( she feels her features already souring ) , I’ve no patience for a man’s riddles , but holds her tongue , instead tipping herself back in her seat to pin the stranger with a PEERING look , seeking and prying , gazing ‘pon him as one may inspect the merit of a particular treasure. Her curiosity begins to overcome her , draws her away from the need to send him off ( & what could it hurt ? there were far worse men to speak to in this place , after all ) . “Hm,” Lhore huffs , pulling her cup close and swallowing away the remnants of the swill. “I cannot say I do,” She replies at last , allowing him his grace. “Instead , I find I’ve somehow acquired a sailor-man muttering nonsense in my ear.” A bit r u d e , more than d i r e c t , but there’s a certain sharpened CHEEK to her words that suggests – perhaps – this is her way of being humorous and friendly. “Do you find yourself called … ‘Cringe’ ?” She doesn’t really understand what that means , it must be an insult. A smile threatens her painted lips. “... Or are you FREE ?” Or maybe she does know what it means.
