Rangi is NOT Azula
As you might have guessed, I am a fan of Princess Azula. I also happen to be a fan of Rangi from the Kyoshi novels, the firebending bodyguard of Kyoshi and her love interest.
A LOT of comparisons have been made between the two. Both are exceptional firebenders in their own right and quite possibly the best of their age. Both have been raised by militaristic parents. Both of them carry the heavy weight of expectation on their shoulders. And both of them are concerned with a duty, or loyalty to an individual (Kyoshi for Rangi, Ozai for Azula). Even the two look visually similar as seen from above.
It’s gotten to a point where there’s been accusations that Rangi is essentially trying to be an Azula clone and “replace” Azula in the mind of the fandom. That Azula can’t get better, so here’s these “betterer” versions. And there is some legitimacy to that. The comics gave us Kiyi, who I swear couldn’t be a more blatant Azula clone even if they tried.
And in Legend of Korra, we got Kuvira who also shows some similarities and even got a redemption arc in the comics at the same time Azula was being dragged through the mud. So I can easily imagine that Rangi may have been intended to be a clone of Azula and was conceived as an attempt to replace her.
There’s just one problem…Rangi grew to be beyond an Azula clone.
She had nuances and dilemmas that made her distinct. Just as Azula’s characteristics make her distinct from Rangi. While it’s true that both of them faced a lot of the same issues, they were approached in a way that made them feel unique. Azula’s crushing expectations were the result of Ozai’s strict tutelage and conditioning to be a monster. Rangi’s desire to prove herself to her family came from her clan’s humble origins and the fact she was targeted as a kid since it was assumed that she got in the Royal Academy for Girls since her mother was the headmistress. Azula’s devotion to Ozai was out of that conditioning, while Rangi’s devotion to Kyoshi and fussing over her was partly out of love, and partly out of devotion to the Avatar and Kyoshi’s abnormal upbringing.
And while both can both be considered snobbish and classist, Azula’s came from her authoritative family and never got a chance to break away from that. Rangi’s issues with the daofei arguably originated from Hei Ran who participated in putting down the brutal Yellow Necks and probably had a warped view of them because of that.
So yes, Rangi does share a lot of similarities with Azula. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that since it can explore what Azula would’ve been like in a better environment and what she could potentially be, while also examining how bad the Fire Nation got and the warning signs with Rangi. You CAN do a lot by comparing the two.
But trying to replace Azula with Rangi is, quite frankly, an insult to both. Azula since her potential is being stunted due to a stubborn refusal to properly explore her character in depth. And Rangi’s depth and nuances are completely nullified if she was intended by the writers to solely be an Azula clone.
Time and again, characters have been known to evolve from their original concept to become something new and unique. So even if Rangi was intended to be an Azula clone, she’s grown beyond that to be her own character. And I firmly believe the two can coexist since while their similarities are undeniable, they’re both strong enough to stand on their own.
Rangi is not Azula. She is Rangi. Just like Azula is not her brother.
Plus Rangi would blow a gasket if she learned she was meant to replace Azula and would put the writers in her shitlist.

what kind of horrors 👀
Imagine losing all understanding of your native language. You can't understand it, can't speak it, can't read it, can't write it, can't think in it, and can't even use or understand sign language with it.
Instead you start speaking in an entirely unknown language. It is as if you have been speaking it all your life. You know you haven't but you're able to completely understand the intent behind what you say.
And it's not like your intelligence has really degraded or anything! You're still capable of rational thinking. It's just that you have very little way to communicate.
Then combine all that with an irreversible transformation. Your body has changed and you have all these new and confusing instincts.
You could really use some help adjusting... but now nobody can understand you, and you can't understand them.

You know what’s so awesome about Kick-Ass?
It’s the idea of Pietro Maximoff (MCU) and Peter Maximoff (X-Men Alt uni) being BFFs.
Everybody pin these two as “Which Pietro Maximoff is better?”
And I say

200 pages deep in The Tyrant’s Tomb and I didn’t expect that I needed Frank back but now that he’s back I kinda don’t want him to leave. But I know he’ll probably leave after this book but hey his relationship with Hazel is very cute and I will miss them both.
