Odd jobs are few and far between in Nearobo. Peter knows because every day he walks the streets of his village in south-east Liberia looking for one. In a good month, he might make $20 (£16.70). That’s hardly enough to feed himself, let alone his children.

But today things are looking up. As part of an innovative new donation scheme, Peter receives $40 (£33.40) per month for a minimum of three years. No paperwork. No requests for receipts. No catch of any kind, in fact. Just hard cash transferred straight to his mobile phone. 

The 59-year-old casual labourer plans to use the money to buy materials for a new home for himself and his family, he says. “Although it is going to take long, I will continue until my house is completed.”

The scheme is part of a new-look approach to development assistance that, if taken to scale, could potentially turn the £156bn international aid industry on its head.

At least, so says Rory Stewart, the former UK foreign secretary turned podcaster-in-chief (he co-hosts ‘The Rest is Politics’ with Alastair Campbell, a surprise hit which has topped the Apple podcast charts virtually every week since it launched a year ago). From his new base in Amman, Jordan, Stewart heads up GiveDirectly – the world’s fastest growing nonproft – who are behind the initiative.

“It’s a rather radical, simple idea to help people out of extreme poverty. We deliver the cash directly … there’s no middleman and no government getting in the way.”

It feels like an odd statement from someone who has spent much of his life in government service: first as a junior diplomat for eight years (during which he penned a bestselling book about dodging Taliban bullets and hungry wolves whilst walking across Afghanistan), followed by almost a decade as a politician at Westminster.

His enthusiasm is even more surprising given his initial caution. During his various ministerial stints at the UK’s department for international development (including three months as secretary of state), he was an out-and-out “cash sceptic.” 

Giving away money with no strings attached was, he felt at the time, an impossible sell to tax-paying voters. What’s stopping recipients spending it down the pub? Or investing in a hair-brained business venture? 

Quite a lot it turns out. No one knows the value of money more than those who don’t have any, he argues. Give an impoverished mother-of-four $40 (£33.40) cash and, 99 times out of 100, she’ll spend it on something useful: repairs to the house, say, or school fees for her kids...

By virtue of GiveDirectly’s model, participants can spend their money on whatever they choose, but the charity’s research indicates that most goes towards food, medical and education expenses, durables, home improvement and social events.

On the flipside, Stewart also has numerous examples of well-funded aid projects that deliver next to nothing. A decade ago, the then United Nations general secretary Ban Ki-moon estimated that 30 per cent of aid money disappears in corruption. There is little to suggest much has changed.

The aid industry doesn’t need corrupt officials to see its funds evaporate, however; it has its own voluminous bureaucracy. Stewart recalls once visiting a $40,000 (£33,560) water and sanitation project in a school in an unnamed African country. The ‘deliverables’ were two brick latrines and five red buckets for storing water...

The beauty of direct giving, he stresses, is not just that it annuls opportunities for thievery and red tape; it also frees the world’s poorest individuals from the well-meaning but, very often, misplaced guidance of donors. An aid expert in Brussels or Washington DC may well have a PhD in development economics, but who is best to judge what a single mother in a Kinshasa slum needs most and how to obtain it most cheaply: the expert with her degree, or the mother with her hungry children?

Empowering recipients to decide for themselves helps end the kind of “mad world” where aid agencies pay to ship wheat from Idaho, US, to Antananarivo, Madagascar, only for local people to sell it in order to buy what they really want, Stewart reasons.

“So often, these communities are having to turn the goods we send them into cash anyway, but just in a very inefficient and wasteful fashion … instead [with direct cash transfers] they are given the choice and freedom in how to spend it.”

Is the system perfect? No, clearly not. Stewart concedes that opportunities for fraud and coercion exist. To minimise these risks, GiveDirectly employs field officers to meet face-to-face with recipients, as well as a team of telephone handlers and internal auditors to follow up on reports of irregularity.

By his reckoning, however, the biggest impediment to direct giving really taking off is donor reticence. At present, only 2 per cent of official aid is given direct in cash. Stewart thinks it should be closer to 60 or 70 per cent...

‘My children will not have to beg anymore’

Happiness Kadzmila from Malawi enrolled on GiveDirectly’s Basic Income project last summer. She will now receive $50 (£41) a month for a year ($600/£496 in total).

What are the biggest hardships you’ve faced in life?

I am a divorced mother of four children. I got divorced in 2020 while I was eight months pregnant with my last-born child. Since then, I have been depending on working on other people’s farms. I get paid $0.49 (£0.43), or a plate of maize flour per day. As a result, it has been a challenge to feed my children, buy clothes for them, and to pay their school fees My firstborn child is in year 4, the school charges $0.69 (£0.61) per day for her. My second is in year 3, I pay $0.49 (£0.43) for him. There were days when I would have no food in my home, and my children would go to my neighbours’ homes to beg for food. This made me feel sorry for my children as a mother.

What does receiving this money mean for you?

I was so happy the day I received cash amounting to $51.75 (£43.56) from GiveDirectly. I used the money to buy maize at $9.88 (£8.32). My children will not have to go to our neighbours to beg for food anymore. I also bought a sheep at $34.58 (£29.10). I will be selling sheep in future when they multiply. I also bought lotion and soap at $1.88 (£1.58).

How will you spend your future payments?

I plan to renovate my house. I have always admired those who sleep in houses made of a roof with iron sheets because they do not have to think of fetching grass every year for a new roof. I will also start a business selling doughnuts to sustain my income after I receive my last transfer. I did not know that an organisation like GiveDirectly would come to help me this way All I can say to those who are giving us this money is ‘thank you’."

and, we're live!

Time for my 2023 stats round up.

First, let's look at the number of hours/minutes per month, shall we?

All of that account for 59 hours & 11 minutes of podfic. Now, comparing to last year, when I had just shy of 31 hours, that looks pretty good. Remember, last year I started in August so I almost doubled it.

We do notice a dip in March & April, which tend to be busy months in the education world. The spike in May is due to Voiceteam. June-August are a bit odd - you'd think a teacher on break would have more time to create. But I had some life stuff hit and it really destroyed my brain.

So, here's my first 2024 Resolution:

Now, moving on to the breakdowns and fun stuff, shall we?

Here are my top 5 fandoms, authors, ratings, and genres! I also have them in bar chart form and pie chart form, which I'll put below the cut. You'll see a slight difference in the author category -- I didn't include myself or Flowerparrish and my podcast in that as those weren't authors.

Of course, what is podficcing without making covers you love? Here are my favorite covers I made for my own podfics! I have a migraine so please excuse the fact that the images don't line up, vision is blurry:

Now, let's move on to my stats image from above. I used the same format as last year but since I made over 100 more podfic than last year, each microphone now equals five podfics.

As you can see, I participated in a lot of events! I believe I made the most audio for Voiceteam 2022 (as evidenced by my hours/month graph). This was my first year doing Voiceteam and I had a blast. I also got to do Podtogether & Summer Swap for the first time. It was my 2nd year doing ITPE. And then so much more.

My top kudosed collaborative project was "A Fair Compromise" with @wanderingjedihistorian for 212th Appreciation week. My top kudosed solo project was "A Game of Guess Who With Big Blue" by TheWitchBoy. The longest podfic I made was also with @wanderingjedihistorian and was my podfic of our Codywan Big Bang project! My shortest was a Locked Tomb podfic at 57 seconds called Realization.

My first podfic of 2023 was Hot Cocoa by Melime, a "The Batman" podfic. In the middle was Dissipate by SunsetsOverLA for Waxer*Boil month. And the last posted thing was for @fandomtrumpshate, for my top bidder - an Obi-Wan/Jango soulmates AU.

Now, on to 2024! My resolutions are:

To continue working on current WIPs I'm bringing into 2024 - some of which I've already tied up only 5 days into the year

To podfic even when my brain is being a gremlin, because podfic makes me happy and I should be able to focus on that!

To be brave enough to post the first "Soft Wars" podfic and finally tackle the series (kind of the same as resolution #1)

Not to sign up for Big Bangs -- I love them dearly but they actually caused a lot of my burnout this year and I didn't love that. As much as I love collabs, I think I'll stick to Podtogether, multivoices with friends, and gift exchanges this year!

Close the gaps -- aka, as much as I love Clone Wars, I want to focus on all things I love, instead of overbearingly focusing in on one.

Going into 2024, I am going to start tracking what music I use in my podfics, because I was curious about it / @flowerparrish inspired me. I also found a way to track overall Star Wars and then Star Wars broken down into sub fandoms - that should neaten up my "top 5" category a bit.

EDIT: As of November 14th 2023, I've decided to start keeping track of when a post does not include a single-letter element. Single-letter elements are, in order: H B C N O F P S K V Y I W U. These posts will be tagged with "missing single".

Some things to keep in mind:

I try to avoid any piece of moving media (video/gif) that has words in it of any kind. I'm already a transcriber as a job, and while I love it, I'm not gonna do it on my silly little side blog.

I usually don't analyze anything fandom-related, since nothing good can come from a fandom post leaving its circle. There are some exceptions I'll make, though.

I use a script to search for the symbols, but it can't read the words in images, so they have to be retyped into the script 100% manually. I'll most likely still do it, but just keep that in mind when sending in posts with lots of images.

I'll only analyze posts where it's very clear what order things are read in; charts, graphs, doodle pages, and other images with words all over the place won't be counted.

When it comes to URLs, I don't count them for the main tally unless they show up in a screenshot or as a tag somewhere in the thread; instead, the URLs of the users in the thread are listed out afterwards in their own separate tallies, with the elements listed in the order that they appear in the person's URL (this does not include URLs that only appear in screenshots/tags).

If you tag me in a post, I won't be counting anything that you added to the thread, though you will still be part of the secondary URL tally.

When I make a tally, I (usually) won't be adding my own comments, and on the occasions that I do, whatever is in my comment is not added to the final tally.

I tend to stray away from analyzing posts with other similar gimmick blogs already in them these days. This is because we all tend to influence each other's results- for example, if I analyzed a post where alphabetcompletionist tallied up all 26 letters, that would (potentially) artificially add Cd, Mn, and No to my tally. If I did end up doing this, I would be highlighting Cd, Mn, and No in a different color to denote that they would not have been there had I not reblogged from alphabetcompletionist directly.

Kon has been through a lot. He has almost died multiple times (and actually does die at one point, but I'm focusing here on pre-2003 material). He has been exploited by almost every adult in his life. He was grown in a lab, has no parents, and has been dehumanized and experimented upon. At one point he couldn't age past sixteen. He's gone through betrayals and painful breakups. He's watched people he loves die. He's been abandoned by people whom he considered family. He's been homeless. He's had multiple depressive episodes. He's had a vague death wish for most of his short life. His solo series is one trauma after another.

Typically he handles the sadness by putting up a brave front, but this isn't always sustainable. Sometimes he looks sad, utterly dejected, or dead inside. He may even get a little misty-eyed on occasion. But despite often having every reason in the world to, he very seldom cries. Three times. Maybe four.

The first time it happens is after Superman gives him a name, in Superboy 1994 #59. Yes, that's how long it took for him to get a personal name. Kon's response to this is initially to stare at Superman in stunned silence, but once he's alone, up in the air where no one can see his face, he weeps with joy. He is deeply moved to have a real name at last--but heaven forbid he cry in front of Superman! After all, he's got an image to maintain.

(As far as I know now, this is the only case of tears of joy for any of these boys.)

It is possible that at the end of Superboy 1994 #74, when his girlfriend Tana is killed in front of him, a temporarily aged-up Kon weeps over her body. The circumstances and his expression suggest it, but we don't get a close enough view of his face to tell.

When Bart vicariously experiences his own death on Apokolips and goes into shock, his friends initially aren't sure if he's going to make it. Kon in the letter he writes in Superboy 1994 #91 believes that Bart's dead and that he himself is responsible for it. As soon as the tears start coming, he flies away to deal with his emotions alone. Heaven forbid the girls see him crying! Even though they've been doing the same.

Toward the end of Kon's solo, he's working in an apartment in the slums. A young man named Cooper moved in with the intention of getting revenge on Kon for whatever reason but instead Kon befriends him and even saves his life. In Superboy 1994 #100, Cooper returns the favor by trying to get everyone out of the building before a bomb in the basement goes off but does not survive the explosion himself. An already overwrought Kon breaks down at this tragedy.

No tears for his own problems. They're almost always on behalf of someone else, and it takes the extremity of death for him to get to this state--or an extremity of happiness.

He's the most image-conscious of all these boys, so it makes sense that he would be the most careful to limit and conceal these moments of vulnerability. It's his job to be strong and save the day, not exhibit any sign that he could use some support himself.

As someone who has been writing fanfic and using AO3 religiously for a long period of time, I want people to be aware of the answers given by Tiffany G, a final candidate for the OTW Board.

I know a lot of people haven't read the entire chat transcript or even know about the interview, but there are reasons for concern when it comes to her following answers.

Censorship has killed other fanwork based sites, so the things she's talking about are very concerning. She does not say that removal is where she wants to go, but her overall statements are worrisome for people who did experience the destructiveness of censorship in the past. She does not have a clear image and does not give clear answers as to how she would like to proceed or how it would affect AO3 users. There are discrepancies in the information she discusses, specifically the banning of AO3 in a certain country. I'm not saying that all of her ideas are bad and diversifying the board would be amazing, but not when it could come at a cost like this just so that AO3 can have a different perceived public image.

If any of the following is as concerning to you as it is me, make sure to vote as the election ends August 15, 2022, 23:59 UTC. If you can't vote, but are interested, follow these directions to become a voter for future elections!

Answer one -

Tiffany G Well, I think a lot of external people are very concerned about the fact that some works contain child pornography, pedophilic content, and other illegal content. If possible (this is not entirely possible after I chatted with people from PAC though), I am interested in providing extra help to the PAC team and Legal team to update the ToS and policies on those.

Answer two -

Tiffany G OK this is a follow-up to the last question – people think we host child porn content and such things. This issue is actually closely related to the incident when our service is banned in my home country. It might also be helpful to clarify that to the public. I am not an expert but look forward to discussing it more with respective committees.

Answer three -

Tiffany G Well, this is really hard to explain in a few sentences. I think it is going to be different for every work. So more clarification will be helpful and enough, given the fact that most people will not have time to read through everything in ToS.

Answer four -

Tiffany G 1. a) I support 100% “maximum inclusiveness of content”, yet there is always a boundary to everything. Since OTW is already an influential org, we need to protect our image and hold a better image to the public. I want the public to think of us as an inclusive and socially responsible community. So in general, we have to do something to change. Things like making the rating system more specific and obvious to users will be what I want to do. 2. b) Not really restricting the content being posted. I hope it is like more warnings and ratings for posting work so people know what to expect. And all of these are not surprising to people who do not wish to see this.

We do have two more related follow ups for Tiffany G. on the topic of content on AO3: 1. a) please does your definition of content that should be disallowed include all written content depicting sexual content of minors? 2. b) please clarify how you propose we treat the content we currently have in the archive that should be banned with those proposed TOS changes

Tiffany G 1. a) That is not what I proposed actually. I would want to be more specific in the rating system and clarifications so people know what to expect. 2. b) If there are changes, it is going to be some slower work I suspect. Will work with PAC to figure out if changes are necessary.

Audience Member I’m very curious what Tiffany considers a “better image” that the OTW should present to the public. As in, what part of our image is unsuitable.

Tiffany G As I have mentioned before, AO3 is no longer accessible in my home country due to some incident related to a piece of pedophilic work that is posted at AO3. This makes users very difficult to read and write with AO3. When I was reading the comments about the incident, a lot of people seemed to have a negative opinion about us. So, I think there is at least something we can do to help build a better image for us in my home country.

Reptilicus

[It’s been a while since “movie monsters” and “Halloween” lined up on my schedule. This is going to be the next theme block for a while--I’m planning through the end of October and into November.

Would you believe there’s a Danish kaiju movie? Reptilicus was made in Denmark in English (sort of--the actors spoke their line phonetically) for an American market, and the finished product is... something. Reptilicus himself is a marionette, filmed on a camera so undercranked it resembles a slide show. The special effects for him eating someone involve his victim being replaced by a still image, superimposed into his mouth with animation. And the shots of him flying were so unconvincing even by these standards that they were cut from the American release. It’s a hoot and a half, well worth checking out for the dedicated lover of trash. It was the featured movie in the first episode of the MST3K reboot, an honor it deserves, although I still would recommend the uncut version over the one with Jonah and the Bots. For one thing, MST3K cuts out the lengthy interlude that seemingly exists only to advertise Copenhagen as a tourist attraction, complete with an original song!]

Reptilicus CR 21 CN Dragon This creature is a serpentine dragon, with large scales and a slimy cast to its hide. It has four short, clawed legs, and a pair of fan-like wings protruding above its forelimbs. Its face is twisted into a perpetual snarling visage.

A reptilicus is an animalistic aquatic dragon, most dangerous because of its incredible regenerative ability. A reptilicus can recover from wounds at remarkable speed, and fire and cold slow this regeneration down but do not necessarily stop it. A reptilicus switches between frenzied activity and deep torpor, feeding on huge quantities of meat until it is sated, and then returning to the depths of the ocean to sleep. A reptilicus is as comfortable on land as it is in the water, and so may come to the surface to feed on people and livestock if it tires of whales and fish.

Reptilicuses are barely sapient, but seem to enjoy destroying buildings, ships and other large manufactured items out of the sheet joy of breaking things. They use this in combat primarily in order to target flaming swords, magic wands and staves, and other items capable of dealing fire or cold damage. Enemies that keep their distance are sprayed with its sticky acidic breath, and any that come close are eaten. A reptilicus does have strong claws, but they have short reach compared to its jaws and tail. 

The reptilicus is an asexual creature; it reproduces not through traditional means, but from damage. If a significant chunk of its body is torn away, it will regrow into an entire new organism. As such, reptilicuses that are older and well fed may intentionally antagonize creatures that are capable of actually hurting them, such as true dragons, sea monsters, and powerful adventurers, in the hopes of calving off an offspring. For whatever reason, few reptilicuses mutilate themselves to achieve such effects.
