"And by the way, a happy women's day." He says and holds out to you the cheap flowers he bought at the gas station this morning, because it's women's day and he remembered last minute.

"You don't have to do the household chores today, it's women's day. Just do them tomorrow." He says while reclining on the sofa, self-satisfied grin on his face as if he just invented the wheel.

"Happy women's day!" Fat, vibrant letters and kiss marks and flowers on the screen of your phone, the fiftieth gif somebody sent you today.

"Happy women's day, get our products twenty percent off!" The makeup company writes in their commercial.

"Happy women's day, find out which man is your perfect match today!" The dating app advertises.

"Women's day this, women's day that. Do we have an international men's day? So much for equality." Your disgruntled old neighbour grouses when he sees the leaflet from the grocery stores, the pink and flowers and all the girly things.

This is not the point.

The eighth of March marks the day that women all over the world took to the streets to fight for their rights. The eighth of March is still the international feminist fighting day because we still haven't achieved the equality we have been fighting for for decades. No one else in the world has the same rights as white men.

Women are paid less for the same work. Research is not done for women, but for men. Women are murdered in this world simply because they are women. Women are mutilated. Women are forced into prostitution. Women are oppressed everywhere in the world. Do you think flowers and gifs atone for the sexual harrassment we are faced with? For the disadvantages we have to put up with?

I don't want flowers. I don't want gifs, I don't want cheaper make up, I don't want to find a man and I don't want to be lazy just to have to do the work tomorrow. What I want is equality. For every person in this world. And instead of painting the planet pink for twenty-four hours, this day should be used to remind us of the never-ending struggle of women in a world created by men for men.

So I use this day to act out my female rage, because it is International Women's Day after all. Fuck the patriarchy.

The recent satellite data from Brazil's space agency Inpe reveals that deforestation in the Brazilian portion of the Amazon rainforest hit a new record high last month.

As the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) states, the Amazon “is of vital importance because people around the world, as well as locally, depend on the rainforest. Not just for food, water, wood and medicines, but to help stabilise the climate — around 76 billion tonnes of carbon is stored in the Amazon rainforest. The trees in the Amazon also release 20 billion tonnes of water into the atmosphere per day, playing a critical role in global and regional carbon and water cycles.”
