What would you name the daughter of a lawyer, psychopath and murderer? Or what do you think he would name the kid xD Japanese name, the last name being Biwasaka

as in, her father is a lawyer, a psychopath, and a murderer, all at once? i like the sound of that!

慧應 Eou | wise answer; wise response; wisdom answers | i’m a big fan of baby names that [are supposed to] boast about the bearer’s supreme intellect. it’s especially amusing when the reality doesn’t quite match up with the name (see exhibit: me). as you may or may not be able to guess, this style of name (vowel-heavy or all-vowel) is extremely rare to come across in japan. eou is quite out-there in terms of straying from the beaten path.

紅夢 Koyume | crimson red dreams | very sleek meaning and appearance; brings forth very artistic imagery in readers’ minds. could garner the bearer some envy-laced compliments. would be super duper cool if you could add a symbolism related to this somewhere in your story.

真麗 Marei | true beauty; really pretty | actually not as common and popular as you’d think. still a normal human name though. kinda generic in that it implies the parents/namer is someone who prioritizes a pretty countenance in daughters. it’s not always offensive haha just saying.

翠琴 Mikoto | emerald green koto harp | we’re totally gonna ignore the fact that 翠琴 was the kanji i used for uchiha mikoto’s name for a long time in all verses she appears in, before i decided that the more-likely 尊 was growing on me and would work better for the premises i’d set anyway. look, mikoto is a very versatile reading, and 翠琴 happens to be a very pleasant combination, okay?

萌苺 Moichigo | sprouting strawberries | by default, i like any floral-themed name that doesn’t have 花 in it. this could make for an unexpected discovery that big bads aren’t as resistant to cute, pretty, and squishy stuff as they’d like [you] to think 😻

望奈湖 Monako | wishing for which lake; gazing at which lake | i really like the sound bc i’m low-key a fan of naming people after place names. added bonus in that the -ko ending isn’t 子, which i think is really boring. the na and ko parts are mostly only here for the euphony, so the main part of this name is the 望, which is used in words to mean things like wish, hope, desire, expectation, visit, gaze, full moon, and the 15th day of a lunar month.

七帆 Nanaho | seven sails | the meaning is brilliant, for starters. in my mind, it’s like a purposely corrupted way of saying, “these sails have seen all seven seas and will continue to scavenge for more!” except haha seven sails lol 🐸. additionally, when i say “biwasaka”, my mind and mouth are tempted to follow it up with an A sound again, and it’d be nice if the consonant sounds of B-S-K were balanced-out with an N sound.

寧楽乃 Narano | of tranquility, delight, and music | theoretically, would work best if they/their ancestors were from nara or neiraku, but even if that’s not the case, it should be fine too. it’s a funky neat name on its own, what can i say. i’m just sitting here hoping i didn’t accidentally create a new name with this one.

成実 Narumi | turning into reality; becomes a reality; becomes the truth | for when your criminal parents are very practical and realistic people. (๑♡_♡๑)

夏茂 Natsumo | summer luxuriance; summer exuberance | one-of-a-kind name for a one-of-a-kind girl. if you will it so. especially if her birthday is in summer; and if not, you could always have it be a favorite, special, or significant season/time to one or both of the parents for reasons you should probably start making up right now.

羅介 Rakai | silk gauze and shellfish; the silk gauze mediates | ya ever wanna go batshit gibberish? fuck all, i do whatever i want, no regrets? that’s actually right up a certain handful of parents’ alley out there, believe it or not. yeah, i can vouch that this name has(/had?) a legitimate real-life bearer out there. no idea. i don’t know. i like the chaos though. 🤌

冷光 Reikou | cold light; luminescence | this is an actual noun that exists in the lexicon. it’s what foreigners might call an “object name”, “noun name”, or “word name”. more specifically, this one is akin to naming your child luminescence or luminance or lumina. some folks find this type of naming unappealing, while some are fine with it. opinions differ, just like how people within other cultures will have different thoughts on this.

礼菜 Reina | vegetable of courtesy and gratitude; courteous and mannered vegetable; ceremonial greens | i know many foreigners laugh at the idea of having “vegetable” in your name, but it’s actually not tacky at all in reality! many parents like it bc it’s simple yet pretty, familiar in everyday life yet wearable as a name, represents a staple part of all living creatures’ lives, and is considered important for bringing flavor to your meals and harmony to your life. certain vegetables and dishes have their own symbolisms too. all the symbolisms! hoorah! also, 礼 (“gratitude, thanks, courtesy, manner, etiquette, salute”, but also “ceremony, ritual, gift, reward, bow”), which is the main focus of this name, is really not a bad idea if you fancy your child growing up to be polite.

璃乃亜 Rinoa | lapis lazuli’s inferiority; lapis lazuli’s asia | all 3 parts of this name aren’t to be taken too seriously, bc the main thing here is the euphony, not the semantics. however, 璃 holds the most semantic weight here, so if meanings are important to you, the main focus would be that it has something to do with lapis lazuli, colored glazes, and glass. it’s not necessarily an insult to name your child 亜, but in fiction... it could be if you want.

理緒奈 Riona | what is the beginning of logic and reason? | alternatively, just 理緒 Rio (“the beginning of logic and reason; the inception of logic and reason; the thread ends of logic and reason”) would be a good enough name, if you don’t want to make her full name too long. 3-character family name + 2-character given name is all well and plausible, but 3-character family name + 3-character given name is a sliiiiight bit pushing it for 20th century standards. unless you’re a sumo wrestler; in which case, it’s perfectly fine and recommended to have long dramatic names. don’t let me tell you what to do with your creative work though.

冬蕾 Tourai | winter flower buds | a rare hidden gem. good for sneaking in some symbolism about hard work and fighting through hardships and well-earned success or something like that. i like that it makes the bearer or the namer sound like a cool-headed person.

夜半 Yahan | midnight; dead of the night; half the night | another word name that started out as a noun first and then later started seeing use as a personal name. it’s so perfectly unisex and ready-to-use, i wouldn’t be able to guess the bearer’s gender unless i ask or meet them in person.

結斐 Yui | forging brilliant literary elegance and talent | 結 is commonly used to mean “tie” or “knot”, but can also be interpreted to mean “to fasten up, to forge, to congeal, to conclude, to settle”, and is a common euphony-contributing compound in feminine names. 斐 is a favorite of mine due to its stately elegance and underrated rareness. the 文 radical in there gives it a polished academically-accomplished feel, which is undeniably favourable for many parents.

Oh excellent question! And thank you very much! OK SO first of all, a small disclaimer is that the way I draw bodies and such is not the "right" way to draw and by no means am I a professional artist so don't take my word for everything. Do keep an open mind to this. However above all else, I REALLY recommend using references whenever you can in order to have a better understanding and such. Now, without further Ado:

I'm just gonna assume by "bodies" you mean body shapes in particular and not the body in its entirety or poses n stuff but if not, I could try making separate posts if you want-

Bodies for me boil down to two Basic shapes:

What I would call the Quadrilateral and the Circles

Quadrilaterals give off solid, boxy vibes while Circles give off more softer, flow-y vibes. Interpret that as you will, but I personally use said shapes to further help give my characters more Expression and Personality to em! For example:

But wait, there's MORE! These shapes are also super duper flexible n bendable! Being able to bend and stretch and squash and do all sorts of things to make to countless forms for countless options!

Absolutely endless options I tell ya! This helps with character variety, differentiation, characterization, and most importantly: Diversity and Representation! Not everyone is identical in body shape and seeing their bodies in media makes em feel, well, represented!

👼🏼 Tips for Maintaining Cleanliness 👼🏼

A.N: Hey pretty people from all over the world! I was debating what I should post for these blogs so if any of you have suggestions or recommendations what I should research and write about next pls don’t hesitate to send a message! The future is fast and I am only 1 message away.

Being neat and clean is not only beneficial to beauty , but it is also helpful to boosting our moods. Decluttering everything around us including ourselves, is like a way for us to start anew. For me organizing and having a good self grooming routine gives me confidence and motivation to carry on in life. The feeling can be different for all of us, but I promise you one thing that cleaning up for ourselves will lead us into a positive path. Here are my tips and tricks that I have gotten as I continue embarking on this journey!

Never forget that decluttering everything around you means decluttering everything around. This includes wallets, photos from your phone, apps you never use, toxic relationships, messy scattered papers. Basically whatever you think feels messy, just chuck it out the window. /j please follow proper disposing rules. Anyways, you can also try methods for decluttering like the Mari Condo technique. In which you just choose to keep whatever makes you happy and dispose anything that is not.

My second tip is to clean up right away! It is better to clean in small parts of your day instead of cleaning everything all at once. Personally I find that cleaning right away feels just as normal as walking, compared to when I would pile all my to do lists at once. Which would feel like a huge chore! So put away those makeup after using. Clean your bed when you wake up. Wash the dishes when you only have a few utensils to clean!

I also like to suggest to be very mindful with what you consume. A lot of the times we do not realize what or who affects us until we are broken or hurt. So protect your energy and the people you love. What you can do is to be more thoughtful. Look into the products your buying. If it is food check the ingredients. If it is a skincare product. Look into the formula to see if there is any harmful chemicals. If you love scary movies, just watch until you can handle. Please never force yourself to do anything, there are many different types of forces. Like forcing yourself to be kind to others compared to forcing yourself to get out of your comfort zone. So it is totally up to you on what boundaries you feel you need to enforce.

Super duper last! Being neat and simple is an underrated beauty trick. Some days all we need to feel like ourselves is just a simple at home grooming. Trust me on this, on the days wheee you may feel like a diamond in the rough . After a good buffing you can shine better than gold. Neat grooming tricks I prefer is painting and shaping my nails, eating healthy, making sure my lips are soft and plump, and so much more! Confidence is key to staying neat, trust yourself and be free!

random question but do you have any sci-fi book recs?

now that I think about it... not nearly enough!! I feel like I read a bunch of sci-fi in high school and college but either grossly overestimated that number or most of it was so mediocre that it didn’t leave an impact on me lol. and I definitely have yet to read a lot of the really foundational sci-fi novels but I can toss a couple things out there...

the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy (and its associated sequels and radio show) is one of my favorite books ever but it is not, like... your typical sci-fi novel. it is certainly a novel that Happens In Space (Mostly) and has some really fun (and funny) sci-fi concepts but that’s not like, the “point” of it, I guess. either way I have to recommend it because douglas adams is one of the most masterful satirists out there and reading his books sent me spiraling into an existential crisis when I was 14. no ragrets

pretty much anything by isaac asimov will be good. I never got around to reading the foundation series (which are supposed to be his best work by far) but I, robot is a classic for a reason. it’s not so much a “shooting lasers in space”-type of novel as it is a “examining the philosophical implications of robots” novel where it presents a bunch of different scenarios and how they play out while abiding by a singular set of rules. unfortunately that is exactly the kind of thing I love so it really tickled me, lol.

same goes for michael crichton, people love him. I only ever read the andromeda strain but I thought it was super neat (in the same kind of “puzzling out a sci-fi mystery” way as asimov’s stuff), although I did find out recently he was a climate change denier right before he died so... lmao.

some of kurt vonnegut’s novels get into science fiction-y territory... galapagos, cat’s cradle, and sirens of titan are all up there. it’s been ages since I read most of them but they all made an impression on me back in the day

this one’s pretty random (it’s not really a novel, and if you want to split hairs it’s only barely sci-fi) but you know those freaky memes of like, bizarre illustrations of humanoid creatures? like the “season’s greason’s” yeti thing? those comes from this awesome book called man after man: an anthropology of the future by dougal dixon. none of it is intended to be, like, an earnest prediction of what humanity is gonna look like in a million years, but it creates a bunch of interesting scenarios for how human beings might adapt to their environment (naturally or artificially) over time in really drastic ways and what that would look like for the future of biology. the illustrations are a big draw but it has a lot of text explaining what certain biological adaptations could offer, how we’d use them in a given environment, little stories about the lives of these future humans, stuff like that. unfortunately, as far as I can tell, it is super duper out of print so good luck finding a used copy for under two hundred bucks. totally unrelated link I just dropped here by mistake

two things: I hate to pigeonhole it as a sci-fi novel because it’s so many more things than that, and it may be a little Too Relevant to the goings-on of the world, all things considered, but I adore severance by ling ma. fantastic novel about capitalism and alienation and immigration in the united states. the science fiction part is that it’s about a (fictional) pandemic but it’s far from your average plague novel fare... that being said, when I read it at the beginning of 2019 it very much freaked me out and sent me into a whole thing about “oh my god I couldn’t live through a pandemic, this shit is so scary!!!” and here we are. severance is her debut novel and it was already getting a lot of recognition before The Plague but the timing of it all helped rocket it onto a lot of bestseller lists so I’m hoping we see some more work from her soon

hello there and welcome back to the community !! i took a break myself and coming back can take a bit of courage, though. the community changed a lot in my opinion ; positive as well as negative things happened. while i haven’t been in a group for years ( i’m only getting back as we speak ) i can only give you advice for indie rping and perhaps general roleplaying :

an aesthetic / graphics and overall pleasing image is considered important. while it surely isn’t everything, having an accessible and neat theme will help you gain attention. i highly recommend checking out the themes in my tag here. please note that you need to pay for some in order to support the creator !

gif icons and roleplay icons that are heavily edited and / or around 70px + are it right now. you can find some gif icons here and roleplay icons here. but don’t be scared, gif packs and gifs are still amazing ! find some super duper flawless gifs here.

diversity is important. use poc, trans, non-binary and lgbta+ muses. the time is now.

using small font, sub text and bold / italics, double space, special fonts ( for example messletters.com ) is fun, too. play around and find your style.

answered asks, especially if formatted, will look wobbly if posted. thanks to a tumblr update the format will disappear and therefore templates and banners are commonly used for answered messages. here are some templates for you. so, for example : if you receive a meme from a partner, you answer it by posting your banner and your reply beneath / above. in that case the formatting won’t disappear and you can tag your partner.

commissions are very much a thing ! you need rp icons, psds or perhaps a whole new theme ? there are great people out there, if you have some spare money and don’t know where to start. here’s the general tag. put icons, psds or themes - commissions for a more specific search. of course there are still people who offer those services for free. my dear friend @gifsfm is perfect with graphics and i can help out with psds and manips.

credit where credit is due. especially in the indie community it is common to put a credit page / section in your rules. tag the creators, your sources and so on. it’s nice and makes creators very happy.

Need Music Recommendations

Could somebody suggest me some songs that we think would fit in space?

I don’t mean necessarily like “beep boop robots planets” but like. songs that could feasibly be enjoyed by some neat duper space pirates/cowboys/heroes in like a Super Diverse and Colorful Rock Opera in Space kinda deal.

FE: Awakening S-Ranks (part 2)

part 1

Fun fact: My playtime for Fire Emblem: Awakening is 298:22 (hours:minutes), with an average playtime of 00:50! This was over a length of about five years-- April 2013 to September 2017. I really loved this game, but I didn't even do half of the endgame and DLC stuff, somehow. I should finish all of that off...

If you noticed a certain pattern from my last post: (I think) that isn't because of personal preference! I got the serious feeling as I was playing that either 1) original writers, or 2) certain translators/localizers were assigned to specific characters' supports, and therefore certain support lines had wildly different feelings and qualities from their fellows. So there's gonna be a lot of overlap as I continue to go through this, I'm pretty sure.

Sumia

The connecting thread of Sumia's supports is either a) interaction with horses and pegasi, or b) Sumia putting herself down or doubting herself and her friends boosting her confidence (at least in theory-- in practice it can be a bit....)

I saw you did Sumia and Frederick, and honestly? Double thumbs up. Definitely her best romantic support.

Runner-up: Sumia and Henry: Neat usage of the medium the story's constrained to. Very silly.

Also, like... I'm kind of shocked that Sumia and Virion don't have a support route? Like, really shocked?? Tharja, too... They've got a hobby in common, after all. See: Sumia & Cordelia's along with Miriel & Virion's and Tharja & Stahl's supports.

Miriel

Connecting thread of Miriel's supports is Science! Either teaching or learning about the world and the people in it. Often, with people, it ends up she makes friends with those she studies. She's a direct and sometimes inconsiderate personality; she's kinda autistic-coded and I love her.

- Miriel and Frederick: Very cute! Mutual respect and both acting according to their natures to reach a learning/teaching goal. For future runs. (It's, uh, got a really heterosexual message that's explicitly stated that I'm not into, but ignoring that? It's good.)

- *Miriel and Vaike: Surprise! It's super! Cute!! A good friendship based on mutual respect, which serves as a great base for a romance. (Also, I think it's fun when you can reclass Miriel's son into a Barbarian.)

- Miriel and Gaius: Hilarious. Miriel shows off a somewhat more naive side, at first, but they quickly strike up a competition that makes their interactions lively. Their S-rank reflects the rest of the route.

Runners-up: - Miriel and Virion: Echoing above, this support is a great one both for the characterization, and for the ending that leaves you warm.

- Miriel and Gregor: One of the most romantic Gregor supports. Very sweet, and a lovely elaboration on both of their characters using Miriel's book as a catalyst. The S-rank is... meh, so I'd recommend leaving this until you have a run where you don't have anyone you really *want* to pair with either of them. (Though, again, I think it's fun when you can reclass Laurent into a Barbarian.)

- Miriel and Cherche: Cute friendship and gaining understanding of such. Strongly recommend doing their supports.

- Miriel and Donnel: Hot for teacher. ... She really got a lot of good supports, huh? Anyway, I think this is one of the best Donnel supports. The other would maybe have been Tharja's? Checking...

Tharja

The connecting thread of Tharja's supports is... Curses! Who'd've thunk it? Also, reveals of new sides and old events. Most are very silly by nature, because Tharja is an entirely serious chunnibyou who had the unfortunate luck of coming into contact with the Shepherds and simply gets swept away, again and again. She also happens to have even more quality supports than Miriel.

- Tharja and Virion: The S-rank of this one turns it from silly to genuinely great displays of both of their virtues. A support about taking action for others. (I love most of Virion's supports, but this is still one of my top three.)

- Tharja and Stahl: Background! Also: honesty! You get to see a bit of Stahl you otherwise don't, especially on the S-rank.

- *Tharja and Donnel: Hilarious, and very cute. Showcases a lot of the positives of both of their characters.

- Tharja and Lon'qu: Super important Lon'qu backstory! Makes his support with Lissa cuter, too... A good friendship, but the S-rank is super-duper worth it.

Runners-up: - Tharja and Kellam: Background for both of them; based on worry for their family in this time of strife. Also, her nickname for him makes me warm and fuzzy for a reason I can’t quite place. (One of the very few good Kellam routes!)

- Tharja and Ricken: Super! Duper! Sweet! Friendship! Their A-rank is genuinely amazing, and their S-rank's worth a giggle.

- Tharja and Gregor: Important Gregor background, funny phrasings. S-rank is good.

- Tharja and Libra: Sweet! And! Supportive! Also, gives perspective on Libra's backstory, but doesn't reveal it. Their S-rank shows off a part of his personality he usually doesn't give into.

- Tharja and Henry: Camaraderie.

i actually havent played the first game yet. thats next on my list though. i started with gravity rush 2 because they had a sale on it a long time ago. but i imagine the first game is really similar and Kat, the main character, is so likable. and the world itself is just really neat.

do you have the physical copy of remastered? because i think its super duper rare and expensive. if so, thats RADICAL.

the wonderful 101 is my favorite game...maybe ever, but it’s kind of a hard game to recommend. it plays a lot like bayonetta, but has a really weird control scheme with how you get different weapons out (you either use the gamepad or the right control stick to draw the shape you want, like in okami, and the weapon size depends on the size of the shape you draw).

some of the shapes are straightforward, like a straight line for a sword, but some of them can be really weird. theres a bomb weapon that is like an omega symbol and thats one of the harder ones to draw and thats one of the most useful weapons in the game. its just a weird system overall.

I’m sorry that you’re feeling super low right now, anon. Depending on how bad you feel, I would recommend taking a little break from RP and getting lots of you-time where you rest, recover, and be gentle with yourself.If you’re still feeling unsure where to go after your break, I don’t know if this is kind of brain-dead obvious advice, but here’s some things I would give a try:1) Hunt down a reasonably safe looking RP FC, some RP Linkshells, and even some RP Discords to join of folks that have the same RP preferences as you. If you’re unsure where to look https://ffxiv-roleplayers.com has a FC and LS section to give a gander at.Despite my sometimes chatty, dorky presence on this blog, I am actually a shy, delicate bean that has a hard time hunting down RP out in the wilds by myself. The very first thing I do when I first join a new server community is find a safe-looking group of RPers to join that seem like their RP wants/needs jive with mine. Mingling with a smaller segment of the community is way easier and more manageable than trying to engage with the entirety of it.Plus I think of an FC or LS as being like ‘home base’ or a foundation I put roots in. As time goes on and I get more and more positive interactions, I get more strong and confident, branching out my leaves into other areas of the community - but if I get skittish, I always have my beloved foundation to return to and that helps a lot. Plus any FC or LS members you befriend will hopefully want to introduce you to their friends, and you can very naturally slowly make new friends that way.2) Check out resources like https://ffxiv-roleplayers.com, @balmungrp and @mooglemeet for other people who are also looking for new RP buddies. The RPC forums provide a nice alternative to Tumblr when hunting down RP buddies. It’s got a very different dynamic that may suit you a little better depending on your personality. You no longer have to worry about followers. The pressure to acquire them in order to actually be seen and noticed is gone. Instead you just have to chat often enough on the forums enough for people to recognize you exist and are a regular. OR you don’t have to do that at all and can just kinda lurk quietly and get to know the different folks there until you find someone who seems really neat. Then you can hit them up with a PM on the forums to see if they’d be interested in RP. If they’re too busy? That’s ok, there’a always more. If yes! Awesome. Time to brainstorm a starting scene.

With balmungRP and mooglemeet, there’s plenty of reblogged posts for folks Looking For RP. If anyone seems interesting, you can follow their blog, and send them some fun asks or meme prompts about their character to learn more about both the player and the character. See if they seem like a kind person who produces RP/content that you enjoy. If they are, gently give them a poke with your character’s profile and ask them if they’d like to Rp sometime. Let them know it’s no pressure. If they’re too busy, that’s fine. There’s plenty more LFRP posts out there! If they’re not - awesome, try to brainstorm with them what would make a nice starting scene.

For brainstorming what your first-time-Rping-with-someone scene could be, I personally tend more towards something that involves a bit of action or some form of central conflict. AKA Person A gets attacked by HORRIBLE MONSTERS and Person B comes across it just in time to help Person A fight them off! Person B is WOUNDED after battle and Person A comes across them in the aftermath! Person A just got robbed and is CHASING after their assailant to get their stuff back when the thief crashes into person B! This is because both characters having to work together to fight or do something together - even if they wind up in opposition to each other - often helps eliminate the immediate need to go through all of the forced awkward first-time-meeting-somebody talk that might normally happen if they met at a bar or something. Experiencing something together immediately helps forge a small bond that can grow much faster than an awkward tavern conversation. This is especially true for characters who are a little more anti-social or socially awkward.

3) YMMV, but unless you’re a naturally extroverted social butterfly who can navigate large social situations with ease - I wouldn’t try to network at large, one-off server events that are oriented entirely around being social.

Speaking from personal experience, big social server events tend to just be a little too overwhelming, too many people, too much chat log - it’s a lot to deal with when you’re your own if you’re shy. People also tend to attend large social RP events with friends and your interactions with people might get lost in the chat scroll while they hunt for their friend’s responses.

I would instead try to go to a repeat event that has some sort of interactive component where you need to interact with another RPer. If your character is a fighter, something like Grindstone or a fighting type event where you can repeatedly go beat folks up and become a ‘regular’ at the event can help as people slowly start to recognize you and maybe feel compelled to interact.

If you can’t find any interactive-component events that suit you, find a repeat social one that suits you instead. There’s lots of taverns, cafes, and even pizzerias now that you can go to over and over until you’re a ‘regular’ which might help you grow comfortable over time and may aid in you striking it up with another patron there. If you’re super duper shy and the thought of talking to a total stranger at a bar/cafe/tavern makes you lock up, start with baby steps - go to the tavern and have your character do something simple like write, sketch, read a book, work on a painting, etc for 30 minutes. Something relaxing and simple. And if no bites, you can give yourself permission to pack up, leave, breathe until your anxiety feels fade, and then try again another time.

Once you’re feeling braver, have their ‘hook’ action be something more noticable - maybe they’re singing, dancing, reading fortunes, or setting up a canvas to paint the entire bar. Something compelling enough to make people curious enough to come to you instead of you having to come to them.

I hope this helps even though a lot of it is probably obvious advice. (I’m sorry;;) Just always, always remember that your boundaries deserve to be respected and if anyone new tries to ram over them, they need to be kicked to the curb ASAP.

HARD ROCK ZOMBIES (1985, d. Krishna Shah)

NOTE: I RECOMMEND WATCHING HARD ROCK ZOMBIES BEFORE READING THIS REVIEW IF YOU WANT TO AVOID SPOILERS!

Human ambition is a funny thing. It can lead to great triumphs, but also great tragedies. Without human ambition, we would not have rock n’ roll, the most vital of American art forms. On the other hand, human ambition also lead the Third Reich to exterminate more than six million Jews, Catholics, homosexuals, physically and mentally handicapped, and Romani people. How does this tie in to today’s film, Hard Rock Zombies? Well, for now, let’s just say that it is a testament to both sides of the coin of human ambition that the sickos who made Hard Rock Zombies said to themselves, we’re going to make Hard Rock Zombies…and then actually went out and made Hard Rock Zombies. I’m honestly not sure if I mean that as a compliment or not.

We open on two metalheads riding a T-Bird convertible down a winding desert road. Lo and behold, they stumble upon a buh-buh-buh-baaaaabe hitchhiking. What are they gonna do, NOT invite this bodacious blonde into their sweet ride? We now cut to a dwarf with an eyepatch and a troll dancing around with a guy holding a camera by a river. You read that right. The metalheads and the blonde pull up on the other side of the river, strip down to their skivvies, and do a little skinny dipping. Suddenly, she drowns each of them one by one! And also does something else, because the water turns blood red, but I have no idea what that could be. The camera guy takes pictures of this gristly scene, while the dwarf and the troll celebrate the carnage. They chop off one of the victims’ hands, blondie picks it up and sings “I wanna hold your hand.” Again, you read all of that right.

Cut to: our heroes, the band, whom the movie never bothers to name (seriously, this band has no name), rockin’ out before a sold out crowd. Right away, we’re confronted with the major problem of all of these 80s metal horror movies: these guys just do not sufficiently rock. I mean, they have a synth player, for cryin’ out loud! This was not too long after Van Halen risked losing their metal fanbase by adding synths to “Jump,” because synths were pop, and pop was for pussies. But seriously, these guys make Billy Joel sound like Napalm Death. Oh well, at least the crowd of roughly 12 people seems to be having a good time.

Backstage, the band strip down to their banana hammocks, and their manager, Ron, tells them that they have to have their photos taken with a bunch of groupies. None of the dudes in the band, especially the lead singer, Jesse, seem to want to do this. They’re incredibly ambivalent about potentially sleeping with these women. Which of course is par for the course for 80s metal bands. Most of Motley Crue’s autobiography, The Dirt, is about the dudes politely sipping Earl Grey tea and discussing Nietzsche. We soon get an idea as to why Jesse is not interested in all of these women who want to ride his mullet, and believe me, you’re not gonna like it.

As he’s escaping all of these annoying women who wanna show him their boobs, Jesse runs into Cassie. Now, the movie is not entirely clear on how old Cassie is supposed to be, but let’s just say she’s young. Like, teenage. Like, below the age of consent. She warns Jesse to stay out of the town of Grand Guignol (subtle), where the band is scheduled to play the next night. Jesse instantly falls in love with her, because this movie hates you, and we’re treated to white hot, sexually charged flirting such as this:

Jessie: You're neat.

Cassie: No, I'm not.

Jessie: Yeah, ya are.

Cassie: ...shakes head...

Jessie: Yeah, ya are.

Guys, it’s rare that I make a point of writing down dialogue in these movies that we talk about, but Hard Rock Zombies left me with no choice but to slam that pause button and record some of these lines, because holy macaroni, peep this screenwriting magic:

“I got it from a book. You know, a boooooooook?”

“You guys ready for the show? The loud show? Loud music show? Rock and roll?!?!”

“Oh bullshit, young stupid!”

“You suck, mister! I know it and everyone knows it!”

Eat your heart out, Aaron Sorkin!

So the band arrives in Grand Guignol, and wouldn’t you know it, they pick up the same hitchhiking blonde, who invites them to stay at her family’s mansion. The family is pretty normal, you’ve got blondie, the photographer, the dwarf, the troll, the groundskeeper who, um, is that a Swastika armband he’s wearing, and grandma and grandpa, who speak in thick German accents and we meet them while they’re in the bone zone and the dwarf and the troll are watching them. Oh, and by the way, they’re secretly Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun, and Eva Braun is a werewolf. I PROMISE THAT ALL OF THIS IS TRUE.

As it turns out, everyone in Grand Guignol is a backwards rube who thinks that rock n’ roll is the devil’s music that will lead to “physical sex” (again, actual quote). So they get super duper outraged when the band engages in some antics that wouldn’t be out of place in an episode of The Monkees. They skateboard around, do silly dances, and mug for the camera. The sheriff throws them in jail, the town council cancels their concert, and outlaw all rock n’ roll in general, leading to a scene where everyone throws their records and tapes in a pile and destroys them (again, subtle).

Meanwhile, Jesse and Cassie keep running into each other and falling deeper and deeper in love, and the movie keeps rubbing our faces in their obvious age difference, because apparently the overt Nazi imagery wasn’t cringeworthy enough. Just wait until we get to the song he writes about her, because you’ll have to go to jail once you hear it. They practice at the creepy mansion, and the family tries to electrocute them. That doesn’t work, so instead they murder the band members one by one overnight. The drummer is stabbed in a terrible homage to the Psycho shower scene, the keyboardist is felled by werewolf Eva Braun, I don’t remember what happens to the guitarist, I think he falls out of a window or something, and Jesse is crucified and disembowled with a weed hacker by the groundskeeper. This means Hitler is finally ready to turn California into the fourth reich…here we go…no turning back…complete with gas chambers. Which come into play later. THIS IS ALL FROM A REAL MOVIE THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

Luckily, before he croaked, Jesse gave Cassie a tape he made of a bass lick that can raise the dead. Look, just roll with me here, ok? You’ve made it this far. So Cassie plays the tape at the band’s grave, and they rise from the dead, ready to get revenge on Hitler and Eva Braun and co. In zombie form, they all sport weird mime makeup that kinda looks like KISS in the early days before they figured out their image, and they walk around as if they’re doing a combination of the robot and the Macarena. These are both choices that the filmmakers made. So they pretty much instantly murderize the Hitler clan with no problems, but whoops, they don’t stay dead for long, because now they’re zombies too, and they’re attacking all the hicks in town, which makes THEM zombies. Now we’ve got Nazi zombies and redneck zombies running around, which is not an ideal situation to say the least, but for now, the band have to go play their big gig.

This is where we finally get to hear Jesse’s love ballad to Cassie in it’s entirety, and, well, here it is…

“I’m so in love, but you’re so young.” BARF BARF BARF BARF ETERNAL BARF. Anyway, see ya in jail, which is where I live now because of this song!

I’m really loathe to talk about the rest of the movie, because at this point, it takes a turn into goofy comedy, and just completely falls flat. Not that their satirical bits about the PMRC and anti-metal hysteria were all that biting, but at least they were trying to say something, whereas these Zucker brothers-lite groaners are just insufferable. There’s a gag about a girlfriend who’s so possessive of her boyfriend that she won’t let any other women get near his severed head after a zombie rips it off, which the filmmakers obviously thought was beyond hilarious, but is really torturous. Then there’s an even less funny gag where some Pointdexter is like, hey, since zombies are brainless, they must be, like, allergic to brains? So if we all walk around with these giant cardboard cutout heads, they’ll leave us alone? Huh? And of course it doesn’t work, and of course the zombies just eat everybody, and as he’s being devoured, the Pointdexter yells, “Don’t believe everything you read!” Ugggh, read this: you suck, movie.

OK, there is one running gag from this section that I liked: after the troll becomes a zombie, he just eats his own body until he’s a burping skull. I happened to think that was charming and great.

Eventually the townsfolk try to sacrifice Cassie to the zombies, because they read that if the undead feast upon a virgin, then they’ll rest for another hundred years. Whatever. So Cassie is totally about to be gang banged and devoured by zombie Hitler and his gang (wow, what a sentence), when luckily the band shows up, and lures them away by playing that resurrection riff that Jesse learned from a book (you know, a booooooook?!?!) And where do they lure them? Ugh, sorry…here goes…they lure them to the gas chambers, where they’re all gassed to death. You know, like in the Holocaust? I have nothing more to say.

The film ends, in perfect fashion, by spelling co-writer/director Krishna Shah’s name wrong in the credits. Fantastic.

When a movie looks particularly bad, I often like to say that it reminds me of a fake movie meant to play in the background of a real movie. Well, as it turns out, that’s the actual origin story of Hard Rock Zombies. Originally, the film was supposed to be 20 minutes long and featured as the movie the characters in another Krishna Shah production, American Drive-In, go to see. Apparently Shah decided at some point that he could double his profits by turning Hard Rock Zombies into its own feature film. This begs the question: is this where all the Nazi stuff was added? Because it’s easy to imagine characters in a movie occasionally checking in with the drive-in movie and seeing a bunch of rockers rising from the grave, but that Hitler subplot is just so bizarre and so incongruous that I can’t help but think it was tacked on.

Hard Rock Zombies is the craziest film I’ve seen in awhile. It approaches Demonwarp and Spookies levels of what the hell am I watching madness. You genuinely will not be able to predict where this movie is gonna go from scene to scene. However, the tacked on nature of that madness keeps you at arms length a bit, and eventually it just becomes tiresome once you realize it’s not going anywhere beyond mere shock value. I mean, this movie is nearly an hour and forty minutes, and ends with a scene in a goddamn GAS CHAMBER. So, by all means, show this one to your friends, just don’t blame me if they never talk to you again. You may be right, they may be crazy, but in the end, it’s still rock n’ roll to me.
