Review: Ultimate Avengers

With the recent MCU shows and movies not being all that good, I decided to go back and watch the very first Avengers movie I had ever seen and what really got me into the Avengers in the first place. The Ultimate Avengers movie from 2006.

I have always been a fan of Marvel and superheroes even before this movie, but this is what really nailed it for me. Even before going back to this movie I had pretty much remembered most of it even after not seeing it in 16 years. I wanted to see if it held up as well as I remembered or if it is just the nostalgia that is making me remember it as fondly as I do.

The movie starts out in WW2 with Steve Rogers fighting the Nazis, more specifically the main enemy of this movie Herr Kleiser. This segment isn't very long and ends with Cap kicking Kleiser off of an exploding rocket and Cap falling into water where he would eventually freeze only to be found by Nick Fury and Betty Ross.

This is also where we first see Bruce Banner and we learn he's got a bit of...I guess you could call it an obsession with Cap. We learn later it's because he thinks that if they figure out the super soldier serum they used for Cap that he might be able to control the Hulk. I'd also like to go ahead and say I actually don't really like this version of Bruce Banner. As a kid I didn't really care and I just liked big green guy punches, but now I like both Bruce and the Hulk and this is probably my least favorite version of Bruce. The Hulk is still great though.

The first 40-ish minutes of this movie are pretty slow. It's basically just Nick Fury assembling the team which consists of most of who we'd eventually see in the MCU; Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Natasha, etc. The only differences are Giant Man, which does later appear in the MCU, and Wasp.

Bruce does actually gain control of the Hulk, but only for a small period of time and then, along with fighting the Chitauri the other Avengers have to fight the Hulk as well. Unlike in the MCU Hulk actually picks up Thor's hammer and uses it against him which I honestly love.

While there's not a ton to say about this movie I do think it holds up, but only as something fun to watch. If I wanted to watch an Avengers movie I'd probably not go back to this one and I'd probably go to one of the first three MCU movies or Civil War. It's not bad for what it is, but definitely shows it age. Perhaps the comic is better. With that being said though, I do recommend it if you've never seen it. It would give you a better understanding of what the original MCU movies took inspiration from.

A Feathursday Winter Solstice

Winter moves down on the kingdom, and the days are fanged. In the darkened wood the stiffened trees point sharply upwards to the five-fingered sky, and on the limb of an ash a pigeon is mute, motionless. . . .

Winter has teeth and claws, winter hangs on. His bony fingers wait for any forgotten leaf that hides in the hedge. The afternoon is weighted with silence, it arches over a kingdom, it lakes over it. . . .

Beyond the window pane lies the banked up darkness, but behind it light shines in the child's eyes. To-morrow will come, and Winter will pass on to another kingdom.

These selected lines from British writer James Hanley's (1897-1985) short story The Face of Winter seem to evoke the essence of the Winter Solstice, with its dark somberness and its promise of light, as do the illustrations of crows and a wooded path by Hanley's son, the British artist Liam Hanley (1933-2019). This story was published in Loughton, England by K. A. Ward in an edition of 99 copies signed by the author in 1969.

To-morrow will come, and Winter will pass on to another kingdom.

A post explaining my Stranger!Jon au in more detail under the cut + more art of him.

Jonathan Orsinov is the ward to Nikola Orsinov in all ways except in legality. Most of that having to do with the fact that she kidnapped him after Jon came in contact with a leitner as a young child. Instead of this leitner being one of the web, it was a leitner of the stranger. This leitner drew Nikola in and thus sparked her interest in Jonathan Sims.

He tries to live a normal life. He does try. Nikola even encourages it, but makes sure to keep him within arms reach to keep him from shattering himself. And he's fine with it. He truly it. That is until he finds himself in the Magnus Institute. He initially sought out to mark the Archivist, one Sasha James. Unfortunately, Martin K. Blackwood just had to ruin it and get in his way.

He ages just like how he normally would if he weren't in her "care." However, he is far from the same person he used to be. Where his skin was once fleshy and soft, it is now brittle and hard, like porcelain. And it's just as fragile. He can shatter at the slightest provocation, which gives an insight into the hollow void tucked away inside his body. The cracks seal themselves with time, and the shards even regenerate given enough time. However, it's much more time-saving to pick himself back up and glue himself back together. The cracks may seal, but he's still left with marks left from them.

He looks very human at a first glance, but if you pay enough attention, something is very deeply and fundamentally wrong with this man.

and, in somewhat the same vein, what are some things you've included in your writing that are a private joke to yourself?

What is it with people turning my asks back on me lately 😉J/K I love it! I slip so many little bits like that in that I lose track myself, but here are some highlights:

For inside jokes, In “Charming” James sings Puff the Magic Dragon to get Anna back to sleep; this is the same song that I would sing to my kids when they were wee to do the same - and is the only song I can sing and not sound like a strangled cat. Also, in “She”, aside from the author insert with the British soldier (Gerry’s right that people from Pompey get a wee bit insulted if people think we come from ScumSouthampton), Mary and Gerry also share the same anniversary date as my wife and I (give or take 29 years).

From a wider perspective, “She” actually has a lot of little bits it - Inspector O'Hare mentioned in the news report is named after the inspector from Hope Street, a Northern Irish police procedural drama; Angela Rippon was one of the original presenters of Top Gear, which actually did air on the date the fic is set - and conveniently allowed me to do the Rippon/Ripping joke; Erin, ever the romantic but always unlucky, has her birthday the day before Valentine's day - missed it by this much… etc.

My favourite two jokes are when Shea and Sarah leave the pub to the strains of Anita Ward’s latest single, what was “Ring My Bell” - which is just what they were off to do, if you know what I mean… (*waggles eyebrows*) Also, there’s a Doctor Who reference when Orla tastes the blood - “Blood. Human blood. A positive… with just a dash of iron.”

I also quite like referencing the wider canon too - In “To Travel” James has a wee garden, as it's established in Erin's Diary that he's a talented gardener, and I thought he'd probably like to have a proper go at one when he had his own house. James saying “Right, OK, etc” when having a cack attack is a reference to him trying to use the computer in episode 1x06.

Oh, and referring to Erin’s “swishy” skirt in various places (especially "A Confederacy of Fathers). I snuck that in to tip the hat to another fanfic author, but I can’t for the life of me think who…

This is the first year where I didn't struggle to reach my 52 book goal at all, only some of which is thanks to the Lovecraft marathon. I also read a ton of short sci-fi stories early in the year for an online class I took (which is also why there are so many sci-fi novels in the beginning of the year) and feel much more knowledgeable in the genre even though I'm still not very well read in it. I will be taking a fantasy course next year to what I assume will be similar effect.

It's still hard to read non-audiobooks, made worse this year by a promotion at work that means I have much less free time overall but still a fair deal of time for audiobooks while working with my hands. My (I don't post it) movie list suffered similarly, with this being the first year in a while I didn't hit my movie target. Not discussed: I read various comics this year! Standouts: Chainsaw Man Part 1, the first volume of Pluto, Fun Home, the fifth volume of Phoenix, Look Back

Goals for next year: more foreign policy reading, more literary fiction, write something of my own, ohgodthesearethesamegoalsaslastyearpleasetellmeI'mnotstagnating

Walhonding Canal Lock No. 9

The Walhonding Canal Lock No. 9 is located on State Route 715, in Jefferson Township, Coshocton County, west of Warsaw, Ohio. The Walhonding Canal was a canal in Coshocton County that was used as a feeder canal for the Ohio and Erie Canal. A small canal, only 25 miles long, it was wholly contained within Coshocton County, following the Mohican River from Cavallo south to the confluence with the Kokosing River, which together with the Mohican forms the Walhonding River. The canal followed the Walhonding River southeast toward Coshocton where it met the Ohio and Erie Canal in Roscoe Village.

Building of the Walhonding Canal commenced in 1836 and finished in 1842. William H. Price, Charles J. Ward, John Waddle, Jacob Blickensderfer, Henry Fields and Sylvester Medbery were among the members of the engineering corps responsible for the Walhonding Canal. Several of these men also served as contractors on the Ohio and Erie Canal. In addition to these were John Frew, S. Moffit, Isaac Means, John Crowley, W. K. Johnson, and others. It cost $607,268.99, or an average of $24,290.76 per mile. The first canal boat launched in the county was called the "Renfrew" in honor of James Renfrew, a merchant of Coshocton. It was built by Thomas Butler Lewis, an old Ohio keel-boatman.

Traffic began to slow as other modes of transportation began to improve and need for the canal dwindled. In 1889, the Pennsylvania Company organized the Walhonding Valley Railroad that would follow the route of the canal from Coshocton to Loudonville. The Walhonding Valley Railroad was soon consolidated with the Northwestern Ohio Railroad, which formed the Toledo, Walhonding Valley and Ohio Railroad. The railroad was completed four years after the organization of the Walhonding Valley Railroad and it used some canal property on its right-of-way as it built the railroad, an action which led to a legal dispute.

The state officially abandoned the Walhonding Canal in 1896 and the railroad that took its place continued to operate until 1936 when the Mohawk Dam was built for flood control, effectively cutting off the right-of-way. The Walhonding Canal Lock No. 9 was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 24, 1986.
