Review: Ultimate Avengers
Tumblr media
With the recent MCU shows and movies not being all that good, I decided to go back and watch the very first Avengers movie I had ever seen and what really got me into the Avengers in the first place. The Ultimate Avengers movie from 2006.
I have always been a fan of Marvel and superheroes even before this movie, but this is what really nailed it for me. Even before going back to this movie I had pretty much remembered most of it even after not seeing it in 16 years. I wanted to see if it held up as well as I remembered or if it is just the nostalgia that is making me remember it as fondly as I do.
The movie starts out in WW2 with Steve Rogers fighting the Nazis, more specifically the main enemy of this movie Herr Kleiser. This segment isn't very long and ends with Cap kicking Kleiser off of an exploding rocket and Cap falling into water where he would eventually freeze only to be found by Nick Fury and Betty Ross.
This is also where we first see Bruce Banner and we learn he's got a bit of...I guess you could call it an obsession with Cap. We learn later it's because he thinks that if they figure out the super soldier serum they used for Cap that he might be able to control the Hulk. I'd also like to go ahead and say I actually don't really like this version of Bruce Banner. As a kid I didn't really care and I just liked big green guy punches, but now I like both Bruce and the Hulk and this is probably my least favorite version of Bruce. The Hulk is still great though.
The first 40-ish minutes of this movie are pretty slow. It's basically just Nick Fury assembling the team which consists of most of who we'd eventually see in the MCU; Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Natasha, etc. The only differences are Giant Man, which does later appear in the MCU, and Wasp.
Bruce does actually gain control of the Hulk, but only for a small period of time and then, along with fighting the Chitauri the other Avengers have to fight the Hulk as well. Unlike in the MCU Hulk actually picks up Thor's hammer and uses it against him which I honestly love.
While there's not a ton to say about this movie I do think it holds up, but only as something fun to watch. If I wanted to watch an Avengers movie I'd probably not go back to this one and I'd probably go to one of the first three MCU movies or Civil War. It's not bad for what it is, but definitely shows it age. Perhaps the comic is better. With that being said though, I do recommend it if you've never seen it. It would give you a better understanding of what the original MCU movies took inspiration from.

I did not watch as many movies this month compared to January lol.
This month I watched:
The Terminator (1984) dir. by James Cameron
Nobody (2021) dir. by Ilya Naishuller
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) dir. by James Cameron
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) dir. by Robert Rodriguez
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000) dir. by Curt Geda
No Country For Old Men (2007) dir. by the Coen Brothers
What I recommend:
Honestly I recommend all of these with Batman Beyond in exception and I’ll explain. Terminator 1 & 2 are amongst some of the best sci fi movies ever made with 2 being the best of the 2. Nobody is a solid hilarious action movie with a great performance from Bob Odenkirk. Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn is a great horror/action movie full of over the top violence. No Country For Old Men is a neo western thriller that keeps you on your toes with Javier Bardem playing the psychopathic hitman Anton Chigurh. For Batman Beyond I only really recommend it if you’re a fan of the Batman & Batman Beyond animated series from the 90s to early 2000s as well as the DCAU, if you just like animated super hero movies this should be in your lane too.

Retrospective Review - Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
I have never been very big on the concept of Batman Beyond. For me, even as a kid, I always felt like Batman was darker and that an adult should be Batman. So there was always something a little off putting to me when Batman Beyond made a high school teenager into Batman. It felt like trying to make Batman into Spider-man. As a result, I never followed the show Batman Beyond very closely as a kid, I warmed up to the idea eventually and I enjoy it now but I still would have preferred if Terry was a college student, not a high school student. This movie I watched fairly late and I was shocked by how good it was. In all honesty, there is a decent argument that this is the darkest Batman movie ever made. Rewatching it now, there are still scenes that I found pretty disturbing.
Just by the subtitle of the film, you know that the big usp of the film is the return of the Joker. The concept is intriguing. One of my issues with Batman Beyond was always that they never really created villains that were nearly as memorable as ones in BTAS. Now, I get that BTAS had villains from the comics but characters like Freeze and Harley Quinn were brilliant new or reimagined characters. But Hamill's Joker is a classic and placing him in this new setting was fascinating. He's terrifying from his first appearance, where we see only his red eyes and then he kills off one of the Jokerz. His re-introduction to the public and Bruce's first interaction with him was awesome, as is Terry's first interaction with him. The film draws back on the connections between characters from The New Batman Adventures as Barbara and Tim end up being fairly pivotal characters in the narrative. The film acts to fill in some gaps as to what happened to Batman and the Joker between when we last saw them in TNBA and in JL/JLU and Batman Beyond. So this is a film that does reward the viewing I did for those shows as well.
In terms of story, there is not that much complexity to it. Joker is back in Gotham and causing mayhem. And he is using the Jokerz gang to rob telecommunications equipment to take over a satellite that can be used as a weapon. The real interest in the movie is about how Joker is back, because, as well learn in flashback, the Joker is actually dead. So its an interesting mystery as Terry and Bruce investigate the potential culprits. There are only two suspects in the investigation, one being Bruce's main competitor as the CEO of Wayne Industries, which is basically the red herring of the movie, and Tim Drake. The film's real highpoint is the backstory to Tim Drake and the flashback to that horrifying past event where Joker and Harley tortured and brainwashed Tim into becoming Joker jr. That's honestly a seriously disturbing portion of the movie and it just propels this movie so much higher. This is Joker at his most warped but it is also deeply tragic and poignant. The whole incident is the beginning of the breakup of the Bat family. Its a big part of why Bruce is so alone at this stage of his life and why he effectively fires Terry so he doesn't have the same fate that Tim did. But it is also an indictment of Bruce's decision to let someone as young as Tim be Robin. While Dick and Barbara were at least college students and older when they are operating as Robin/Nightwing and Batgirl respectively, Tim was a school kid who should never have been out alone. However, the way the death of Joker is portrayed is also a testament to how Bruce's teachings and Tim's innate connection to Bruce was stronger than any brainwashing that Joker to do, because even in that moment, he chose to kill Joker rather than hurt Batman. But even on top of that, the eventual reveal that Joker used genetic technology to take over Tim's body is also deeply disturbing and invasive. The transformation scene is genuinely creepy.
The film is a lot of fun apart from that. The animation is wonderful as are all the various action scenes. certainly the entire flashback sequence has a dark and creepy quality to it and the scenes where Batman fights the Joker in the current timeline are fluid and exciting. There are not much in terms of complaints. The whole corporate struggle aspect of the story is a little unnecessary but it is meant to give some context to the story. There are some convenient story development, like the genetic technology implant that nobody saw for 40 years, and the satellite which acts as a weapon. But it is still a damn interesting movie and I would say it boosted my interest in Batman Beyond considerably.
The voice acting is incredible. I mean, saying anymore about Conroy and Hamill is pointless. Conroy really seemed to enjoy old Bruce. Hamill is at the peak of his game as Joker. Angie Harmon brought her signature voice to older Barbara and Tara Strong was younger Barbara. Arleen Sorkin as Harley and an amusing cameo as Nana Harley is terrific as always. Dean Stockwell is solid as TIm Drake. Will Friedle is excellent as Terry. I can't reconcile that he's the same guy that voices Ron Stoppable in Kim Possible.
Anyways, Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, Curt Geda and everyone else behind this film did an excellent job. In terms of Batman animated movies, this ranks towards the top. I was also happy that it kind of gave a relatively happy ending to Bruce as he reconciles with Tim and Barbara. For me this ranks as an 8/10.

TREKMATCH! # 208 - TNG's "The Child" vs 2016's Batman Unlimited: Mechs Vs. Mutants
BATMAN UNLIMITED: MECHS VS. MUTANTS
In this third and (thankfully) final feature-length commercial for the Batman Unlimited toys, Mr. Freeze and Penguin turn some villains into kaiju size monsters who terrorize Gotham. Luckily, Batman has a spare giant robot or two he can use to fight back, available now at your local Wal-Mart.
GRADE: F+
STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - "The Child"
A space light impregnates Troi without her consent so Worf is like "space abortion," but Troi decides to have the baby, which is born and grows into a seven year old in three days. I know it's Troi's choice but they had no idea of the intent of this creature, so Worf's idea should've at least been given a bit more consideration. Anyway, the kid dies and Troi is super sad but like she barely knew the kid? I mean tough break I guess but the whole scenario starts and ends in four days.
GRADE: F-
Victory to Batman, but Trek is up 105-103!
