How is it possible that Japan has convenience store brands of delicious cheap chicken nuggets that you can find in gas stations?
So Lawson is a company found in 1939 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The once American milk store would eventually after a serious of mergers and corporate back and forths go defunct as a brand. But today, it is now a chain of over 14,600 convenience stores in Japan. I could get side tracked by their business model offering a “'Hub of refreshment in every community' through the three 'Whew!' Surprises." The vision of "Creating Happiness and Harmony in Our Communities" is the best and real social purpose I've ever read.
In 1975, under a deal with The Daiei, Inc., the first Japanese Lawson store would open. It would take until 2012 to reopen Lawson stores in Hawaii on American soil again - side note the 2 locations are located in hotels: the Sheraton Waikiki and the Westin's Moana Hotel. The chain is expanding rapidly with over 5,000 additional stores in China.
Now that would all be unremarkable, except they would also go on to launch their "Kara-age-kun" chicken nuggets in 1986 (what a time to be alive). They have launched over 100 flavours, and reportedly sell 500,000 orders every day. Or as legend would have it - they have sold over 150,000 Mt. Fujis tall worth of tasty chicken nuggets. And like the Costco hot dog of Japan - they only recently increased prices for the first time. They wouldn't even have the cute packaging and branding until 2003.
Lawson is the story of a brand that started in Ohio selling milk, launched as a novelty American store in Japan, is now owned by Misubishi and turned into an iconic chicken empire.

Tokyo Chick, 231 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91101
Tumblr media
Tokyo Chick specializes in Japanese fried chicken and Japanese sides, served with Japanese sauces. The owner told me that it’s related to a fried chicken business in Japan that has over 100 locations. They adapted the concept for the local Pasadena market (it’s located in a “non-Asian” area and most of their customers are not Asian).
Choose from fried chicken combos (boneless or drumsticks) which include fries & a soda (starting at $13), bento boxes, and sides (fries, salad, rice, potstickers). The bento boxes start at $13 and include a drink, steamed veggies, ½ a hard-boiled egg, fried gyoza, pickled daikon radish, and steamed white rice. The chicken comes in several flavors: signature crispy, ninja teriyaki, fuji wasabi, garlic soy, Tokyo spicy.
They also have a self-serve sauce station where you can also get your fountain drinks, utensils, and napkins. There’s a self-service order kiosk or you can order at the counter. They’ll call you when your order is ready.
Boneless chicken bento box ($15) signature crispy:  The chicken was great – 5 boneless pieces of hot, juicy (dark meat?), flavorful, extra crispy fried chicken. It had a slight soy flavor and reminded me of popcorn chicken only in bigger pieces and a thicker, crunchier batter. The steamed rice topped with sesame seeds and seaweed was fine. The pickled radish cubes were crunchy and tangy. The gyoza was juicy and lightly fried. The egg looked like a soy egg but with very little soy flavor. The broccoli was still crunchy. I didn’t like the cold, mushy cabbage and carrots though. They were sitting in a sauce (soy based) but had little flavor. I tried a few house sauces and the wasabi was my favorite.
Housemade honey green tea: way too sweet but I did like the fresh mint they added
The pickled radish cubes reminded me of the ones you’d get at a Korean fried chicken place.
The chicken is fried to order in an open kitchen and takes about 10 - 15 minutes. The restaurant looked clean and had a fast food feel with color pictures of the food hanging on the wall.
Parking is difficult in the area (by City Hall).
3.5 out of 5 stars

Brought mum to try the Japanese foods at Tokyo Shokudo (東京食堂) located in Northpoint City. This restaurant chain is halal certified so all the pork ingredients had been replaced with chicken. Browsing through the menu, I picked their recommended tempura rice dish while I chose ramen for mum.

The Signature Tendon (特製天丼) priced at S$13.90++ came piled with an assortment of fried battered prawn, fish, vegetables and a sheet of nori or seaweed. As I lifted out some of the crispy tempura items to get to the rice below, there it is, a hidden fried egg still warm with oozing egg yolk! Mixed the yolk into the rice and proceeded to devour the donburi.

The portion in mum’s Chicken Cha Shu Yuzu Ramen (鶏チャーシューラーメン) seems underwhelming considering it cost the same S$13.90++. Unfortunately, mum didn’t take to the ramen with modern twist. She found the yuzu and ramen combination flavours strange so she didn’t finish her meal. :(

Black Vinegar Chicken Nanban
Made by a chef who came directly from Japan🇯🇵. Black vinegar chicken nanban with egg tartar🍗. Fried chicken cooked with black vinegar, cloaked in fluffy egg batter🍳. The meat taste fragile and smooth. Not very oily. More natural. Not that salty. The egg sauce makes the chicken more fresh. Fulfilling and delicious😋
