ROUND 2! MATCH 4 OUT OF 8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Cerise:
She’s the child of the red riding hood and the big bad wolf. Don’t question it to okay. Also she was the first character I thought of when I saw this!
She’s the daughter of red riding hood and the big bad wolf! She’s a werewolf!
Love her design very much. She gets a lot of great outfits. Also, another version of Red Riding Hood that incorporates both the girl and the wolf together.
1: ever after high was iconic and amazing and so well written and i'm really bitter that it was cancelled so i think cerise deserves this win (i do too) 2: her design is really good. like no one else could EVER if you ask me 3: wolf girl. do i NEED to say more. ...honestly, my brain cannot bring out any more words so fingers crossed someone else submits her and she gets some ACTUAL GOOD propaganda (sorry cerise forgive me)
She’s a badass red riding hood with a secret (her dad is the big bad wolf)
She's the daughter of Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, so she has wolf ears and is really strong. She's supposed to be the next Red Riding Hood so she should count.
She's the daughter of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf making her a daughter of forbidden love and thus a double representation of Little Red Riding Hood's age-old story of maturity and adolescence.
She's really cool! She was born from a forbidden romance between the wolf (don't worry he turns into a human lmao) and Little Red Riding Hood and has to hide her heritage from other people which I think is really interesting. Also her hood is really pretty.
She's the daughter of red riding hood and is meant to take over that role when it's her time
she slays so hard!! while technically shes not THE little red riding hood, she is her daughter and the FUTURE little red riding hood. shes also half wolf, which is really cool!! and yea. she slays.
idk she’s just cool & definitely gay
She’s meant to be the next Red Riding Hood but her whole bit is that not only is her mom Red Riding Hood, her father is the Big Bad Wolf and she needs to keep it a secret. The best of both worlds. The tween girls went crazy for the wolf thing. Had a pretty doll and cool outfits. Has an older sister who’s meant to be the next Big Bad Wolf (Ramona Badwolf) who she comes into conflict with. Identity crisis! She was everything to eleven year old me
She’s half wolf, she has cool white streaks in her hair, she’s a jock with super speed and I like her a lot.
she turned me lesbian.
Fan favourite, my first lesbian crush on a character
She is a daughter of previous Little Red Riding Hood and Big Bad Wolf, how cool is that
She’s a furry yeuwu
she’s the daughter of red riding hood and the big bad wolf. she’s a wolf girl. i love her
Scarlet:
Her big bad wolf is her mutant soldier boyfriend. She shot him once and honestly he was into it. Probably bi. Helped start a revolution.
Her wolf is actually. Um. A genetically modified soldier with wolf traits. At the beginning its not very obvious but by the end of the series yeah she's. She's a monsterfucker. Anyway that's not really relevant but I just think she's pretty cool (not because she's a monsterfucker)
She's a french farmgirl and a pilot who ends up in a plot to overthrow the queen of the moon. The big bad wolf is a genetically-altered soldier that she falls in love with. She's short-tempered, straightforward, and fiercely loyal.
"Grown up" Fairy Tales are a lot of fun. this one is also a cool mix of LRRH and BatB. She can totally take care of herself and her wolves are in for quite a story.
She’s a badass?
her family runs a restaurant and she’s friends with a furry
she's french. she's loud. she falls in love with the wolf (a guy named wolf who is genetically modified somehow). she sells tomatoes and gets in fights and just wants to find her grandmother. she is literally the little red riding hood character in a series of books retelling fairy tales in an alternate universe in space and I love her
she has a gun and she’s pretty cool. sorry she’s french if it helps it’s like 500 years in the future france. also she’s bisexual (TO ME!!! no straight woman thinks the things she thought about winter aka the character based on snow white)

Hunger Games DR
Basically in this DR I'm gonna be the youngest victor of the Hunger Games ever (at age 12, I decided this to purely one up Finnick, I am that petty), obvious warnings for death being mentioned and mentions of basically any topics mentioned in the books as I'm shifting to a book accurate version of the universe.
Basic information
Name: Elyxir Callisto Fay (Ely, Elyx)
Birthday: 09/17/59 (for context the first year of the hunger games is year 1, this is a result of me being lazy as shit and not wanting to work out an appropriate time in the future, so using our time it's probably along the lines of 09/17/2359 or something)
Sexuality: Lesbian
Pronouns: They/she
Age when I first shift: 9 (yes there is a reason)
Home District: District 1
Faceclaim: I look mostly like myself in this reality except my hair is a touch lighter and is longer and slightly wavy plus blue eyes
Important people in my DR (friends, family, mentors):
Family: [Mother’s Name]
Citrine Fay
[Mother’s Age]

All of my siblings also attend the training academy
Friends: Glimmer, her birthday is 7/27/58 (I don't have an image to show what she looks like in my mind as I'm going for how I imagined her in the books cause I thought she'd be cool and I'm super gay, she doens't die in her games either, cause she's the solo winner cause I decided Peeta will win the 73rd and then the 75th quell twist is the same but cause of rules Katniss ends up in the 75th but I have her role as mockingjay)
I also befriend Johanna and Finnick after my games, again going for book accuracy, I don't have the energy to search for a picture
Mentors:
Cashmere and Gloss. They're Glimmer's cousins in my DR, Cashmere won her games at 15 and Gloss won his at 16. I actually found pictures that more or less look like I pictured them so that's good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My games:
My games are the 72nd Hunger Games, the other tributes in the game are as followed
Prince, 17, D1
Calista, 17, D2
Orion, 18, D2
Chip, 15, D3
Dell, 16, D3
Brooke, 15, D4
Dylan, 17, D4
Lunar, 16, D5
Dean, 15, D5
Elaine, 13, D6
Aaron, 12, D6
Hazel, 18, D7
Jude, 13, D7
Camisole, 16, D8
Sterling, 14, D8
Adalina, 15, D9
Herman, 18, D9
Bessie, 17, D10
Kobe, 17, D10
Autumn, 18, D11
Fraser, 16, D11
Ivy, 18, D12
Jett, 16, D12
I won't write every small detail of my games as there's a lot but I'll add some pictures that'll look like parts of the arena
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The arena is like a magical otherworld, there are unicorns in the arena, they attack anyone that appears to be a threat to them, so typically older tributes.
Before all of that though, basically I tested into the academy early and so I'd been at the academy since I was like 5 so I was already planning to volunteer that year but it turns out Glimmer was reaped so I had an even better reason which helped play into my character I put on for the games, confident that I'll do really well for someone my age not that I'd necessarily win but that I'd be able to hold my own, someone that would do anything to protect people she cares about, capitol audiences really loved that.
Glimmer and I are the district 1 tributes that get sent into the Quater Quell, they change the rules even further to allow for two previous victors of the same gender to be chosen for the quell.
I'll probably add more stuff to this anyway

Some more incorrect Jonas Corbin quotes…
…some of which came from my templates, earlier.
Kiera: I hate to be the wet blanket here, but since Nate is busy I guess I have to. (Source: Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Nick: This is my novel. My magnificent octopus. Connor (reading aloud): Once upon a time, there was a lovely little sausage called Nick, and it lived happily ever after. Nick: It's semi-autobiographical. Connor: And it's completely, utterly awful. Thom will probably love it. (Source: Blackadder)
Lauren: Admit it! You like Sarah! Morgan: Oh, come on. I mean, am I attracted to her? Sure. Do my days feel better when I'm around her? Yeah. Does she understand me in ways no one else ever has? Indubitably. Do I fantasize about her? Yes, every night. But do I like her? The answer is no. (Source: Bojack Horseman)
Connor: You know, sometimes I feel like I was born with a leak, and any goodness I started with just slowly spilled out of me, and now it’s all gone. (Source: Bojack Horseman)
Nate: I’m done being the voice of reason, it’s exhausting! I gotta take an angry nap. (Source: Bojack Horseman)
Alicia: What about you? Are you close with your father? *Five minutes of silence* Kiera: …Uneventful. Alicia: What? Kiera: What? Alicia: I asked if you were close with your father, and you sat here in silence for 5 minutes and then said, "uneventful". (Source: Bojack Horseman)
Connor: Only I can make fun of Morgan. Mark: You really do have a sister complex. Connor: Shut up. (Source: Cardcaptor Sakura)
Kiera: Face it, Chloe, you get competitive about everything. Chloe: I can be just as non-competitive as anybody. In fact, I'm the most non-competitive, so I win. (Source: Family Guy)
Jonas (to Chloe): If I weren't so sure you were a lesbian, I'd say you were coming on to me. (Source: Family Guy)
Connor: I want to be a cat in my next life. That way I can have an excuse for being moody. (Source: Lunar: Silver Star Story)
Thom: When is the word "thou" properly used? Connor: When being a pretentious squink. (Source: MadMaze)
Brad: Are you sure about this? Jonas: Have I ever been wrong? Brad: … Jonas: I mean when it's important! (Source: The Little Mermaid)
Nick: Through the incredible power of brotherhood, we can do anything! Jared: There you go, trying to talk your way out of things again. (Source: Wild ARMs 3)
Alicia: What are you reading? Chloe: A book of things I love. Alicia: That's a photo album of Jonas. Chloe: Oh, what a coincidence. (Source: Tumblr)
Connor: So, what’s it like dating my sister? Lydia: She once referred to sand as “heterosexual glitter.” Connor: … Lydia: I love her so much. (Source: Tumblr)
Karin: We all have our demons. (grabs Adrian) This one is mine. (Source: Tumblr)
Adrian: Polyamory is wrong. It's either multiamory or polyphilia, but mixing Greek and Latin roots? No. Wrong. (Source: Unknown)

Pierre Poilievre thinks he can win over new Canadians – here's how he plans to do it
A young Pierre Poilievre sits in front of a room of Conservative faithful and explains their party's strategy for winning a majority mandate. That hasn't happened yet. It's 2009, and while the Tories have won two federal elections, they've remained in minority territory for three years.
"We will win a majority if we appeal to naturally conservative-inclined voters and get them out to vote, and we turn small-c conservative immigrants into big-c conservative voters," the MP says in a video posted to the website of the Cable Public Affairs Channel.
"That's the formula."
More than a decade after former prime minister Stephen Harper pulled off that majority in 2011, Poilievre is the party's leader. Since Harper's four-year term, the Conservatives have lost three straight elections to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberals, with losses stacking up in suburban Toronto and Vancouver seats, home to many visible minorities and new Canadians.
If there's one thing many in the party agree on, it's the need for the Conservatives to build support in such communities. But can Poilievre do it? Enter Arpan Khanna. This week, Poilievre tapped the Greater Toronto Area lawyer, who served as one of the co-chairs on his leadership campaign in Ontario, to coordinate outreach efforts.
Khanna was a political staffer for the man federal Conservatives credit most with making the inroads with immigrant communities that helped Harper along to a majority: Jason Kenney. Colleagues had nicknamed the former federal cabinet minister and Alberta premier the "minister of curry in a hurry" for spending his weekends darting to dozens of cultural events around Toronto and Vancouver.
Khanna said he sees the same drive in Poilievre, who visited the Toronto area multiple times and Vancouver in his first three months as leader, sometimes attending up to 15 events a day. He is planning visits with Chinese community groups in Markham, Scarborough, Vancouver, and Burnaby to mark the Lunar New Year. The new leader has taken to heart the idea of "building a Jason Kenney style of outreach," Khanna said. "He's all into this." He understands the importance of it.
"The first step is showing up," he said. "We recently were at someone's backyard for a barbecue party with about 100 people from the Tamil community, just having a conversation about their issues."
Poilievre has been hitting the road nearly every weekend. His two deputy leaders frequently accompany him on his travels. Melissa Lantsman, who is Jewish and the party's first openly lesbian member of Parliament, hails from Thornhill, just north of Toronto. Longtime Edmonton MP Tim Uppal, who is Sikh, became Canada's first minister to wear a turban when Harper appointed him to the cabinet in 2011.
For the high-profile finance critic role, Poilievre picked former small business owner Jasraj Singh Hallan, who had been considered an at-risk youth after immigrating to Canada as a child. It's stories like Hallan's that Poilievre promotes, touting the promise of the Canadian dream.
"It doesn't matter if your name is Poilievre or Patel or Martin or Mohamed," a video posted online shows Poilievre saying at a Diwali event in October. "If you're prepared to work hard, contribute, follow the rules, and raise your family, you can achieve your dreams in this country." Poilievre often points out that he married an immigrant Canadian. His wife, Ana, and her family were refugees from Venezuela.
Tenzin Khangsar, who worked in Kenney's office when he was immigration minister and assisted with the Tories' outreach strategy, said Poilievre is setting an example for his caucus and the entire party. "And frankly, it shows to all Canadians that this is a priority for me." "This is not just something I'll do during an election campaign." Khangsar said that if step one is showing up, step two is following up with policy.
Poilievre has promised to get provinces to speed up recognizing foreign credentials, one of his first policy announcements as a leadership candidate. He's also railed against "gatekeepers" at the federal immigration department. During a roundtable with ethnic community media convened during the race, Poilievre said immigrant and conservative values are the same: "hard work, family, freedom, tradition."
"Values on which a future Conservative party must be built." A roughly 50-minute video from the event shared on Facebook shows Poilievre offering more detail on his immigration policy ideas: expanding express entry, making it easier for temporary foreign workers to become permanent residents, improving immigrants' ability to bring their parents to Canada to help with child care, and expanding private sponsorship of refugees.
He was emphatic in an interview with a Punjabi radio show last month: "The Conservative party is pro-immigration." But the immigration critic, Jenny Kwan, threw water on the idea, saying in a statement that the Harper government cut settlement services for newcomers and made family reunifications more difficult.
Liberal Immigration Minister Sean Fraser didn't wade into the past, but in a statement, he said speaking to newcomers is the job of any political leader. "Newcomers are not a voting bloc to pander to. They are Canadians or soon-to-be Canadians.
But many Conservatives believe that the party's approach to immigration issues cost them the 2015 election, as the Tories pushed policies such as banning niqabs at citizenship ceremonies and establishing a "tip line" for so-called barbaric cultural practices. Lantsman and Uppal both publicly apologized for supporting what became known as the "niqab ban." But Poilievre has defended the policy as simply requiring "that a person's face be visible while giving oaths at citizenship ceremonies."
An internal review of the Tories' 2021 election loss found their image remained damaged among immigrant communities. The immigration critic, Tom Kmiec, said the Conservatives believe in an "employer-driven immigration system."
Asked whether they support the Liberal government's plan to welcome a record-high number of permanent residents in the coming years, which includes a target of 500,000 by 2025, Kmiec said "the number is not as important as the customer service experience." Kmiec, a Polish immigrant, said the federal immigration department is dealing with massive backlogs and out-of-control processing times. "It's a total lack of compassion to overpromise what you can actually deliver."
Andrew Griffith, a former director of multiculturalism policy for the federal government, predicted the Conservatives would avoid attacking the targets for fear of being labeled xenophobic. Griffith said he doesn't perceive the party as being skeptical about immigration, despite such views being historically present in its base.

Creepy child? Possession?
Human Laris? Weird smoke box thing? ... What the fuck?
Oh hello space husband, took your goddamn time getting here 😍😍
Niiiice little Europa jacket, and the white drip though??? I'm getting 'ageing homosexual on a Florida golf course' vibes, I'm not mad ❤😍😏
"You can't do it, and ya know it. Oh sure, you played the game for a while, when nothing was at stake, when the only challenge was fooling everybody into thinking you had the nerve. But now it's real, and the fear's choking you. Well, here's the truth - you can't do it. People are gonna die, and now your fear, your doubt, is the loudest voice in your head." Excuse me sir whaaaaat
... Who is he talking to? Because Prime tells me that's Picard's ancestor, but she clearly can't see him... is this about himself? Jean-Luc? Are we fucking mirroring again? Is the idea of Q going to a random cafe to speak through an ancestor of his about the man he loves clouding my judgement??? ... Probably, yes. Is that what Q-uick Qcard's going to be about this week anyway? Almost fucking certainly 😂
... Hold on, IS he talking to her? Is that the idea, that he clicks and reverses her decision to go to space, so this whole bullshit doesn't go down at all? 🤔 Seems extreme...
HE CAN'T CLICK IT?! Oh fuck, what have you done my dude 😭 What kind of shit has to be going down for the omnipotent guy to be unable to magic his way out? Mark me down as scared... and horny, because silver fox de Lancie in casual wear 👁👄👁
"That's unexpected... and most unfortunate..." Picard, please come and save your lovestruck idiot of a husband from himself, jesus christ 😭
... Daaaaaamn. I am fucking fascinated. 👀
Celestial Rating: 8/10.
Once again, we have some beautiful and dynamic relationships, interspersed with some welcome humour, although on a slower pace this week - but Q raises this from a seven all on his own. What the fucking fuck is going on???

Transpacific Stories Rec List!
Happy Lunar New Year!  To celebrate, I thought I’d do a “Top 5″ rec list of creative works that I really enjoy by transpacific Asian creators.
1. diaspora babies by Kai Cheng Thom (poem)
This spoken word poem haunts me to this day.  There’s a lot of immigrant (especially Chinese immigrant) emotions mixed up with queer experiences as a child of immigrants, and the vibes are truly just indescribable.  It cannot be expressed, only felt, so link is to the 4 minute video with captions.
2. Yellow Peril: Queer Destiny by Love Intersections (documentary)
A documentary about Vancouver drag artist Maiden China, which also features lines from diaspora babies!  It is all about that queer Chinese immigrant experience, discussing the nuances of both individually and together.  What is it like to be a Chinese immigrant, or the child of Chinese immigrants, in a North American society?  What is it like to be queer?  What is it like where those two parts of you intersect?
I had the chance to meet one of the directors on this project and listen to his guest seminar, and the story behind this documentary and the production house came from an incident where some members of the local Chinese Canadian community launched a very public opposition to LGBTQ+ policies by the school board.  The news media of course went into a frenzy over this, and the producers noticed how the story was framed as “the Chinese community is “traditional” to the point of homophobia” (which...yes, there was homophobia involved, but not because of an innate “traditional Chinese are all homophobic” quality).
The documentary creators wanted to unpack, explore, and challenge this, and also to assert that queer Chinese people exist, which is exactly what the documentary does.  It showcases a variety of different relationships and interactions that queer Chinese people have - with their families, their immigrant communities, their heritage traditions, their broader Western society.  It’s a really complex and nuanced discussion, and one of the best documentaries I’ve ever watched.
3. Disappearing Moon Cafe by SKY Lee (novel)
Oh, you thought I was done with the queer Chinese immigrant theme?  Absolutely never.  This is a landmark book in the history of Chinese Canadian publishing - it was the first novel by a Chinese Canadian author to ever be mass distributed by a publishing house (SKY Lee is a lesbian, so first queer Chinese Canadian author as well!)  It follows the story of the Wong family across four generations, discussing themes such as settler colonialism and the roles and relationships that Chinese immigrants had and have with that, migration, family, and the nature of queerness in a non-Western context.
(I do have a whole essay talking about how understandings of queerness are frequently grounded in Western perspectives and how SKY Lee challenges and reframes non-heteronormativity in a uniquely Chinese immigrant context.  But also, you will totally ship Kae and Hermia.   You just will)
A deeply emotional, intense exploration of Chinese Canadian immigration, from its history to its experiences, good and bad and everything in between.  Truly, this may be a fictional novel, but the research is so well done, and if not every detail is historically accurate, the emotional truth of it is.  An excellent book that gives you so much food for thought.
4. A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki (novel)
One of the most intense books I’ve ever read, and am still thinking about years later.  I can’t speak to the accuracy of the experiences it represents, but it is a book that will make your heart ache and long and wonder.
The premise: Ruth, a Japanese American novelist, discovers debris from the 2011 Japanese tsunami washed up on the cost of British Columbia.  One of these is a Hello Kitty lunchbox containing the diary of a girl named Nao.  Nao is a Japanese American teenager whose family had to relocate back to Japan.  She struggles with living in a foreign culture, family struggles and mental health issues, and severe bullying.  However, she also meets her great grandmother, a Buddhist monk over a hundred years old who was an anarchist, feminist, and novelist in her youth.  In documenting her great grandmother’s story in her diary, Nao comes to tell her own.  The novel goes back and forth between Ruth translating the diary and wanting to learn more about Nao, and Nao’s story (and her great grandmother’s) as documented in the diary.
One of my favourite aspects of this book is the way it plays with perspective.  What is a story?  Who is telling it?  How is a story created and changed by every person who touches it?  What does it mean for a story to end?  Fair warning, there are some very heavy topics dealt with in this book, including depression, suicide, attempted sexual assault, and grooming.  It is a very good book, but please look after your own well-being first.
5. M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang (1988 play)
You know the opera, Madame Butterfly?  The racist Orientalist story of the white American Navy officer who goes to Japan, marries a Japanese girl for convenience, abandons her and their child for an American wife, and then she kills herself because she’s so in love with him that she can’t bear it?  Man, just typing that out pissed me off, and it sure pissed off David Henry Hwang too.  So let me tell you what he did about it.
There was a historical incident where a French diplomat, Bernard Boursicot, was caught in a honeypot trap by the Chinese spy Shiu Pei Pu, who was a Chinese opera singer.  For those who are unaware, Chinese opera singers are traditionally men.  Boursicot was unaware of this.  He had a decades long affair with Shiu Pei Pu, who identified themselves as female to him, and they eventually lived together as a family with a child.  It wasn’t until Boursicot was caught smuggling documents and put on trial that he found out Shiu Pei Pu was AMAB.
M. Butterfly is a play based off of this story, with explorations of Orientalism and how Song Liling (the play’s Shiu Pei Pu) was able to exploit racist beliefs and tropes such as “yellow fever” to win the heart and confidence of René Gallimard (the play’s Boursicot).   There’s a monologue in the original 1988 play (I’m not sure if it’s in the 2017 revision though) that Song delivers in the first few scenes of the play that explicitly addresses and tears apart the original Madame Butterfly story (which makes Song’s later use of it to seduce Gallimard all the more spicy - dude, they literally told you from the beginning why they hate the story, and you still believe that they want to be your docile little Butterfly?)  The overall play is a fantastically clever deconstruction of truly so much Orientalism and really challenges how Westerners perceive and depict Asian (especially East Asian) people.
A note on gender in this story: When the play was first performed in 1988, Song Liling’s character is AMAB and largely identifies as a man, with the strong subtext that he enjoys presenting as feminine.  Since 1988, Hwang has acknowledged that the gender reveal of the original play reinforces gender binaries, and has expressed the desire to revise his depiction of gender in the play to encompass genderfluid/GNC identities, which he did in the 2017 Broadway revival.  I have not seen the new version of the play, in which Song identifies themselves as AFAB and male presenting to Gallimard, so I can’t judge how it was handled.  I’ve heard that 2017 Song embraces a more explicitly genderfluid identity, but cannot confirm this.  The 2017 revision is based off of new information revealed about the Boursicot case, including that Shiu Pei Pu initially introduced themselves to Boursicot as someone AFAB who was presenting as male.

Hey I went and hunted down death of Narcisa black after you mentioned it and wondered if you have anymore just like interesting take/character study/worldbuilding/character background filling recs not necessarily wolfstar,
I was trying to think of some good stuff to rec you (that I don’t know you’ve already read) and so far I’ve just come up with Sweet Home by copperbadge, it’s a nice take on Remus’ lost years which you may have come across before as it’s an oldy,
It’s got a few teeny strange takes here and there but those are far outweighed by an all round great story
I will come back with more recs (book reports) soon hopefully 🐥🔪
hi!! this is a very old ask i’m sorry i’ve only just now answered it!! i don’t wanna answer fic rec asks until i’ve actually read the fic bc sometimes i get recommended some seriously whack shit and i don’t want to put that on my followers
anyway i finally opened this one and i’m probably not going to finish it bc lost years fics make me super depressed (in a good way— i do enjoy them i just don’t have the energy to be depressed about them lol) but i had a little chuckle at the boston descriptors. hee hee hoo hoo im from there etc and i like how fast moving the first chapter is, it feels like time flying by which is interesting bc i think it could go either way. does time fly by without sirius or do the days without him drag on
anyway i’m very glad you like the death of narcissa black! it’s my favorite fanwork for any fandom ever i think and inspires a lot of my own work :))
EDIT: oops i didn’t even answer your question my bad!!!
fics that fill in the cracks/fics that are about the narrative
- lethifold verse lost years, and loving a bad man
- sparks and colors necromancy (and the magic and law surrounding that) and soulmate tattoos (not the stupid kind, the “let’s get magic tattoos instead of rings” kind)
- no dead lesbians flonks, and how fleur could have helped them win the war
- lunar synthesis werewolf draco redemption, plus exploration of werewolf politics etc
- but in time all flowers turn to face the sun trans harry character study
i definitely have more in my ao3 bookmarks but these are the ones that came to mind!

She-who-fights-and-writes Coronacation Book Rec List
Tumblr media
I know that a lot of people are stuck at home right now in dire need of entertainment, so I decided I’d put out a book recommendations list of all the books I’m currently reading and all of my must-reads!
(Just a note that a lot of these are Fantasy because I’m a fantasy nerd haha)
Books/Series I am currently reading
1. The Folk of the Air Trilogy by Holly Black (Currently on #2, The Wicked King)
Tumblr media
Genre: High Fantasy
Setting: The land of Faerie which is kind of historical, but in the human world it is modern day
Main cast :
Jude Duarte (white, human, cutthroat, if I saw her in a Denny’s Parking Lot at 3am I would RUN)
Cardan Greenbriar (white, faerie, the true embodiment of Bastard)
Vivienne (Jude’s half-sister, lesbian with canon gf, half-human half-faerie, I would totally try to be her friend)
Taryn Duarte (Jude’s twin sister, queen doormat, still, I would take a bullet for her she’s jUST TRYING TO FIT IN)
Rating: 5/5 Stars
These books have been on my “To Read” list for so long now and for some reason I just never got around to reading them! Hands-down, these are some of the best high fantasy books that I’ve read in a long, long while.
I finished the first book, The Cruel Prince, in just two days and rated it 5/5 stars! Even though these books are high fantasy and focus on the traditions and ways of life of faeries, somehow all of the characters seem like I could meet them in real life!
The main character actually has genuine flaws and not just “””“flaws”””” and is a Bad Bitch down with murder, and the plot had me on the edge of my seat from page one!
The summary makes it sound like it’s going to be about their romance, but it’s really mostly about a power struggle and Jude being a badass.
Goodreads summary for The Cruel Prince:
Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King. To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences. As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.
2. The Raven Cycle Series by Maggie Stiefvater (Currently on #1, The Raven Boys)
Tumblr media
Genre: Present-Day/Realistic Fantasy (?)
Setting: The fictional town of Henrietta, Virginia
I haven’t gotten around to much of the book, so there’s not much I can tell you about the characters and I can’t properly give it a rating yet.
These books were also on my “To Read” list for a while; I was a huge fan of her book The Scorpio Races and have also been looking for something to quench my thirst for “private school/ghosts/magic” that I’ve been dealing with ever since I read The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo.
I’ve only JUST started The Raven Cycle yesterday, but so far I am hooked! I’m super worried because I’m TERRIBLE at juggling two series at a time but both of these are just so interesting!
Goodreads Summary for The Raven Boys:
“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.” It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little. For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.
MY MUST-READ BOOK LIST
1. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
Tumblr media
Genre: Historical Fiction
Setting: 1700s Europe (England, Paris, Barcelona, Marseilles, Venice)
Main cast (I’ll try my best not to spoil anything because you find out a LOT of different stuff about these characters throughout the book):
Henry “Monty” Montague (white, bi/pansexual, attitude problem)
Percy Newton (mixed race, gay, very sweet boy, definitely got “most likely to bring home to mom” in the yearbook)
Felicity Montague (white, Monty’s little sister, headcanoned as asexual, I love her to death)
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Daring adventure, gay representation, historical setting, hilarious characters!
This book literally has it all! I would consider it one of my favorite books of all time, yet for some reason I’ve never gotten around to reading any of the sequel books! The ending is very satisfying and ties everything together, which I feel is part of the reason why I haven’t gotten around to them yet.
Therefore, it can serve as a one-shot read or a full series if you want to dive into something good!
The humor made me laugh out loud at points and all of the characters are very real and very, very relatable, not to mention the vivid settings of 1700s Europe!
Goodreads summary:
Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men. But as Monty embarks on his Grand Tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy. Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.
2. The Ninth House By Leigh Bardugo
Tumblr media
Genre: Horror, Fantasy
Setting: Yale University and the town of New Haven, Present Day
Main cast:
Galaxy “Alex” Stern (Hispanic, sees dead people, very scary)
Daniel Arlington “Darlington” (white, rich, an angel who can sometimes be a dick)
Pamela Dawes (tbh I honestly don’t remember what she looks like, only that she’s a tired grad student with big nerd energy)
Detective Alan Turner (Black, takes shit from nobody, husband material)
Rating: 4/5 Stars
(NOTE: THIS IS VERY DARK ADULT FICTION AND CONTAINS MATERIAL THAT MAY BE TRIGGERING FOR SOME PEOPLE, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND FOR PEOPLE UNDER 16)
This book is a great read for someone who’s looking for a disturbing, gritty book with layers upon layers of secrets that you have to peel away as the mystery unfolds. I love the secret societies and the intricate magic systems that the book introduces, and it actually made me hungry for more books like it!
Alex is a three-dimensional, very real character who also serves as an unreliable narrator who witholds or warps the information that she’s telling you, making the narrative all the more riveting.
The only issues that I have with it are the fact that Leigh Bardugo kind of just dumps you in the middle of it without explaining stuff first, to the point where it kind of feels like you’re reading the second installment of a series rather than the first one, so things can get a bit confusing at first.
The book also can drag and draw things out for a bit too long, but once the plot fully kicks into gear, you will not be able to put it down!
Goodreads summary:
Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. By age twenty, in fact, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most elite universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her? Still searching for answers to this herself, Alex arrives in New Haven tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies. These eight windowless “tombs” are well-known to be haunts of the future rich and powerful, from high-ranking politicos to Wall Street and Hollywood’s biggest players. But their occult activities are revealed to be more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive.
3. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
Tumblr media
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Setting: Earth, Space, The Moon
Main cast :
Linh Cinder (Chinese, based on Cinderella, cyborg, certified badass)
Scarlet Benoit (French, based on Little Red Riding Hood, farmer who is not afraid to shoot you)
Cress Darnel (White, based on Rapunzel, nerd, I will protect her with my life if I have to)
Kaito “Kai” (Chinese, based on Prince Charming, kind of has to run a whole country, a very kind soul, deserves a nap)
Carswell Thorne (White, based off of Rapunzel’s Prince, bastard)
Winter Hayle (Black, based off of Snow White, royalty, has super special powers)
Wolf (Race unspecified, based off of the Big Bad Wolf, charming killing machine, furry????)
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Do you like fairy tales?
Have you ever wanted to know what fairy tales would be like if they took place in the FUTURE instead of the PAST?
Do you like an amazing, hilarious cast paired with a super interesting plot?
These are the books for you!
I haven’t read them in so long, but I remember how much joy I felt while devouring these pages. Definitely something you will not able to put down!
Goodreads Summary for Book #1: Cinder:
Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth's fate hinges on one girl. . . . Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She's a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister's illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai's, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world's future.
4. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Tumblr media
Genre: Fantasy
Setting: Ancient Greece
Main cast:
Patroclus (Greek, Gay, quiet pining)
Achilles (Greek, gay, very strong, student athlete energy)
Brisies (Anatolian, clever, literally the only one in this story who has a brain cell)
Rating: 100000/5 stars
This is basically the Iliad but if historians hadn’t completely erased Patroclus and Achilles’ relationship. “Haha yeah these guys were totally bros” they say, even though I have read the Iliad and their relationship isn’t even subtle.
This book made me cry at least ten times. It’s just so beautifully written and has such a distinct vibe to it that whenever I crack it open for another time, it takes me straight back to the vacation that I read it on. (Needless to say, sobbing your eyes out can be less than helpful when you’re on the beach)
If you can only read one book on this list, it should be this one. I could talk all day about it and write novels on just how much of an incredible writer Madeline Miller is, but I feel like you’d get my drift a bit better if you actually read the book.
Goodreads Summary:
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. By all rights their paths should never cross, but Achilles takes the shamed prince as his friend, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine their bond blossoms into something deeper - despite the displeasure of Achilles' mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But then word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus journeys with Achilles to Troy, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear. Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart.
Hope this list helps you through your coronacation, and please don’t be afraid to reblog or message me to tell me if you’ve read/will read any of these!

Warriors Rewrite Pt 9: Power of the Stars
Quick notes: this part is a mashup of The Power of Three and Omen of the Stars since both on their own get boring with 6 books each. The Four main cats represent the wise monkeys: Hear No Evil (Dove), Speak No Evil (Holly), See No Evil (Jay), and Do No Evil (Lion). Also, this part is the last true installment to my series of rewrite posts. Maybe I will make another if I read A Vison of Shadows, buut I intend for the end of this arc to be the end of the series (as I'd thought it'd be when the canon books originally came out). I might also post about ideas for Super Editions in my rewrite, but that's about it for this series. I hope you've all enjoyed my ideas, and will like these ones as well!
The first half of the arc follows The Three. They are the children of Tawnypelt and Squirrelflight. Or so they think
In reality, The Three are not siblings, but cousins. Squirrelflight is the biological mother of Hollykit, who's sired by her mate Crowfeather. Crowfeather is also Tawnypelt's mate; the three are in a secret poly relationship. Hollykit is mostly black, but has small ginger spots on her face that look like berries, and a fluffy red tail which is oddly similar to Redtail's despite not having any biological relation to him, also her eyes are green.
Jaykit is actually the love child of Emberpath and Primrosetail. He is a blue-gray tabby with fur a very similar shade to Bluestar's. He has blue eyes like in canon with dilated pupils since he is blind.
Lionkit is the son of Leafpool and Rowanclaw, conceived while they were away from the clans. Lionkit is a large broad golden tom with amber eyes; his resemblance is very close to his namesake Lionheart
Squirrelflight, Primrosetail, and Leafpool's kittings all pretty much happened around the same time. Squirrelflight and Leafpool had hid in the forest together to give birth, while Primrosetail ended up having her kit on the Gathering Island-where she and Emberpath would meet in secret. Sensing that his sisters have given birth, Emberpath brings his little family to them so they could all be together. While staying in the hollow tree, during a nap, Leafpool receives the "kin of your kin" prophecy. When she wakes, she tells her siblings. She insists the kits be raised together so that the prophecy can be better fulfilled, and so their secret relationships wouldn't be revealed. They all agree to allow Squirrelflight to raise Lionkit and Jaykit, since no cat will question their origins due to the clan believing she was impregnated by an unconnected, unknown donor.
When The Three are apprenticed, things go a bit different than they do in canon. Lionpaw becomes the medicine cat apprentice, and Jaypaw trains as a warrior under Brightheart. Although, Starclan still tries to convince Jaypaw to be a medicine cat instead.
The toms' powers stay the same, and Hollypaw gets a power too. These powers, however, come with down sides. Jaypaw can walk in other's dreams, memories, and converse with Starclan/the Dark forest, but can never have his own normal dreams. Lionpaw is unable to be harmed in battle, but gets tired easily when attacked. And Hollypaw has the power of truth; cats can't lie to her and are more likely to divulge secrets to her. However a cat can tell her something that's actually a lie if they believe its the truth
In this rewrite, Hollypaw is the one who discovers the tunnels. Here she starts meeting up with Breezepaw, who also discovered the tunnels through Windclan territory. No, they don't have any romantic feelings for each other like their counterparts Lion/Heather do in canon, because that would be extremely gross
Breezepaw is still Crowfeather and Nightcloud's son, but things go a bit differently between them. Nightcloud is a lesbian and mates with Sorreltail. The couple really wanted to have kits, so Crowfeather volunteers to sire a litter for them, with Squirrelflight and Tawnypelt's blessing. Nightcloud lets it slip that Crowfeather is his biological father, and Breezepaw, despite having two loving mothers, feels like he should have a bond with Crowfeather too. But Crowfeather doesn't feel a connection to Breezepaw. Breezepaw's sense of entitlement is what fuels his rage and hatred for the older tom, and causes him to become a secondary villain in this series
As warriors, The Three are named Jaystrike, Lionflower (after Goldenflower and because he's a sweetheart in this rewrite), and Hollysong
Despite the strength of his powers, Lionflower uses his abilities for good. He charges into battles head on to heal the injured, even if enemy warriors try to attack him. Since he can't get hurt, he can be right on the frontlines
Jaystrike trains in the Dark Forest with Tigerstar and Mothwing as an apprentice. He wants to make up for his blindness, and so he trusts the dead leader to teach to him be stronger. He also trains there to spite Starclan, since they tried to tell him he couldn't be a warrior, he had to be a medicine cat. But one day, Jaypaw somehow manages to pull his mamma Tawnypelt into his dream with him. She sees what her son is up to and warns him of her kin's evil. She scares him pretty good; this ends up being the last time Jaypaw visits the Place Of No Stars. But because of Tigerstar's teachings, the blind warrior receives the name Jaystrike for being fierce in battle
Hawkfrost in this arc, like in the last one, is Ashfur's equivalent. He traps The Three in a fire in an attempt to kill them to hurt Squirrelflight. This is where Squirrelflight's forced to admit The Three are not her kits. When they all escape, however, she gathers them, Emberpath, and Leafpool together so the triplets can fully explain what their situation was.
Within the next day or so Hawkfrost approaches The Three, threatening to reveal the secrets of their parentage at the upcoming gathering. Jaystrike jumps into the tom's memories to see that he'd been spying on the Fire Triplets' meeting.
The next day Hawkfrost is found dead. After some investigation by Hollysong, it turns out Lionflower is the murderer. Upon his siblings' discovery of this heinous crime, he runs away into the tunnels. His adopted littermates assume he is dead, and wonder who the third cat in the prophecy will be now
The last three books of the arc follow Dovepaw and Ivypaw. They are Cloudtail and Brightheart's kits, birthed by Cloudtail this time, and sired by a random kittypet. Dovepaw is a fluffy, mostly white dilute calico with folded ears and hazel eyes. Ivypaw is a mostly white and gray dilute tabby calico with a gray tail and blue eyes; surprisingly she shares a bit of resemblance to Whitestorm.
Dovepaw is chosen to be the new medicine cat apprentice. It's obvious early on that she is the new third cat in the prophecy as well, made clear by Starclan, and discovered by Jaystrike after walking in her dreams. Dovepaw's powers are the same as in canon; she can hear and see things that are far away. The downside is she has trouble with memory. As a full medicine cat her name becomes Dovelight
Dovepaw is nervous about being a prophesied cat and tries to confide in her sister about this, telling her all the secrets shared by Hollysong and Jaystrike.
Ivypaw is jealous of her sister being part of The Three though, and turns to the Dark Forest to grow strong and to feel important. She divulges the secrets entrusted to her by Dovepaw to Mothwing. Soon though, Jaystrike finds out about this-via walking in the molly's dreams-and holds an intervention with the help of Tawnypelt. Ivypaw, now a warrior called Ivyshade, works as a double agent
In the second half of the second to last book, Lionflower returns from the tunnels just as The Three receive news of there being a fourth cat destined to hold the power of the stars in their paws. Reunited, the four cats along with Ivyshade devise a plan on how to fight against the Dark Forest
Also, the Dark Forest has a powerful living ally. Sol is conspiring with the Place Of No Stars, and figures out a way to summon the evil spirits to fight the living world. It can only happen on the night of the lunar eclipse, when Starclan has no power. After trying to convince the clans to stop believing in their ancestors, Sol sees this as the only way to get them to give up their faith
Before the battle, at the beginning of the last book, Jaystrike, Hollysong, Lionflower, and Dovelight go missing. Squirrelflight, Leafpool, Emberpath, Cloudtail, and Brightheart are incredibly worried about them as the time for the Great Battle draws nearer. But Ivyshade knows the truth and assures her kin that this is all a part of The Four's plan.
When the battle takes place, Skyclan arrives to help aid in the fight, rather than Starclan jumping in. They are led to the lake territories by The Four. The group found the distant clan by using their combined powers, and by recalling the stories told to them by Firestar. Emberstar leads the charge, joining her brother to fight Tigerstar and Sol. With the fifth clan joining them, the living clans are able to face off against the Dark Forest and win.
Emberstar and Firestar lose their last lives together at the end of the Great Battle. Skyclan decides to stay by the lake when all is said and done. The Four keep their powers, and decide to put them to better use by taking over for their parents as mediators in the other clans. Dovelight is the exception; she joins Skyclan to be both their medicine cat and mediator, and Ivyshade takes over for Squirrelflight as Thunderclan's mediator

Overwatch OC Review: Phuong Nguyen, “Phuong”
Sent in by @kokizuki! @chiefpharah! Review under read more.
Appearance: Phuong is 5'3" tall with black hair and near black eyes. her default skin is her stage magicians outfit! she wears a dark violet jacket with tailcoats over a white button up, accompanied with dark violet slacks. her accessories include: a violet + red velvet top hat, a velvet bow tied under her collar, a yellow rose, pearl earrings, and a belt full of canisters.
Effective design! It certainly matches Overwatch’s charm for being thematic and detailed.
she got her gauntlets and leg prosthetics from her former circus to complete her stage outfit. her gauntlets are hard light compatible, and she uses them for her magic acts, including the production of her throwing knives (her standard weapon).
Full name: Phuong Nguyen (both common Vietnamese names)
Callsign: it’s just Phuong! she’s a performing magician, so unless you strongly recommend a stage name, i want her to be addressed by her first name
Judging by how she styles herself, I think she’d be suited for a bold stage name. Performing magicians always present themselves with an air of superiority and awesomeness- it’s how they win the audience.
At least, that’s my understanding of performing magicians. “Phuong” is still fine too.
Age: 29 years old
Sex: female
Sexuality, romance: a lesbian very comfortable in her sexuality! :> i ship her with Tracer and Emily romantically, but it’s not canon in her lore because i simply can’t find a way to connect them story-wise?
Both at once? So it’s a polyamorous lesbian triangle. It will be difficult to pull it off since it’s not confirmed (according to my information) if they are open to polyamory, so if you want it canon you’ll have to push your headcanons on canon characters. The shipping is harmless though.
Nationality: Vietnamese
Ethnicity: Vietnamese, as well!
Language/s: Vietnamese, English, Russian (from her former work)
Base of operations: Saigon, Vietnam (but she travels frequently due to her work)
Occupation: Phuong’s a solo-performing magician! she built up her reputation from her former circus by making acts primarily with hard light, a new practice in the entertainment world. as a very well-known celebrity from both her talent and charm, she often tours to spread as much happiness and hope as she physically can.
Affiliations: Dove’s Eye Circus (formerly)
GAME WISE
Health: 200
Armor: 0
Shields: 0
Role: offense! i picture her as a ★★-difficulty fast-moving player who does well at close combat, due to her higher melee damage, and someone who can easily jump into the fight when a bulk of her team is already there. she’s extremely mobile at a level similar to Genji, especially with her passive. an effective Phuong playing style is using height advantage to use Clapperclaw and getting as close to use melee. (as a lil heads up though, most of my worry about her is her move set being too defense-y, so additional attention would be greatly approached!)
Weapons: her main weapon is knives she rapidly produces with her hard light gauntlets! her primary fire is Light Toss (left mouse), which is long range. its default is throwing 2 knives at a time, but it’s chargeable (like Zenyatta’s secondary fire) to have a set of 2/4/6 knives. the charge time for each stage is .2 seconds, output is 8/14/28 damage, and reload time is 1.7 seconds.
Secondary fire: none
Melee: she slashes with two knives, with an output of 60 damage (that might be too high though?)
Maybe so. I’m not sure about the usual melee damage range of Overwatch heroes, but I believe cutting it down to 45 damage should do it.
Abilities:
Review posted in your updated ability post!
- passive: High Jump (due to her prosthetics, Phuong is able to jump higher distances, accessing heights others may not be able to reach; can also grip walls for .5 seconds)
- shift: Clapperclaw (at a high distance in midair, Phuong directs her fall at her target, damaging them with her claws; 50 damage, 3 second cooldown)
- e key: Bullet Catch (can catch bullets/projectiles with her gauntlets, but does not direct them back, kind of like a half Genji deflect; duration 3 seconds, 8 second cooldown)
- right mouse: Dove’s Ditty (short range, healing for one ally (attaches to closest teammate, prefers teammate with lowest hp), heals 50 health per 3 seconds, 15sec cooldown)
note: i’ve listed three abilities, but i was thinking that the additional ability makes up for her lack of secondary fire (like Doomfist).
Ultimate: Phuong’s ult is Chainsaw Trick, which traps enemies in a radius within hologram boxes she creates with hard light. In the next sequence of her animation, she pulls a chainsaw out of her hat to attack her trapped enemies. The chainsaw has enhanced damage with 95 damage per swing. The enemies that aren’t currently being sliced by her chainsaw are stunned for a 5 second duration.
Signature quote: hostile, self ult line is “Ready for my showstopper?” and friendly ult line is “Tune in for the show!”
Skins: her rare skins are based off suits of cards! she also has two epic skins: Rock Dove (which is based on her dove/magic theme) and Lotus (the national flower of Vietnam).
her legendary skins include: Ao Dai (a traditional Vietnamese dress meant for the Lunar New Year Event), Skvader/Wolpertinger (not yet designed; based off the similar mythological winged rabbits), and Prophetess/Soothsayer (not yet designed; meant to be fantasy sorcerer kind of clothes).
I love the inclusion of Vietnamese cultural elements. Overwatch is a highly culturally diverse organization and it makes me glad to see people make use of that fact.
LORE WISE
Bio(short): i’m not very confident in my full bio, so i held off from making a short one!
Bio(full): she grew up in the first Omnic Crisis in Saigon, Vietnam. her parents were poor farmers, and she spent her childhood helping them + going back and forth from the city running errands for extra cash. as a young adult in her 20s, she found work in Dove’s Eye Circus after her enthusiasm for their work was reviewed by the ringleader. when she was taken in, she did some maintenance work helping the circus travel (Dove’s Eye performed in a route from Vietnam to Russia).
How did the first Omnic Crisis affect her in Saigon? You can also reason why it didn’t, but you better be good. The global omnic uprising isn’t exactly something anyone can sleep over.
the circus carried and left cargo at certain pit stops which confused Phuong, but she paid no mind to it (the circus was kind enough to gift her a job so why question it?). after receiving a shipment of hard light tech, the circus taught Phuong to create magic acts with it. since hard light was still incredibly new to the public (i estimate this is around the time Vishkar introduced hard light), Phuong became a sensation w the circus’s already existing popularity.
How did a travelling circus acquire such cutting edge technology? If it is around the time hard light technology was unveiled the world, then I don’t believe Vishkar’d let any little bit just slip away from them.
she enjoyed her work immensely, making people smile as she did when she first saw the circus, and developed a very attached loyalty to the circus. in a stop to Russia, while dropping off shipments, her circus was violently attacked by a Talon branch to steal their cargo. in the fight, Phuong got blasted by a grenade and lost her legs from the knee down.
You can probably align this with my earlier point. Instead of a Talon team, it could be criminal mercenaries under the employ of Vishkar.
she had to stay in recovery for weeks under the medical care of the circus staff, and once she was given prosthetics, she fell even deeper in her loyalty to Dove’s Eye.
How so? What drew her closer to Dove’s Eye, seeing replacements of her loss? Or is it the realization of how important Dove’s Eye really is to her? Is it from reeling from the heat of battle did she understand her love for the circus?
when she recovered though, she couldn’t let go of the Talon attack and the shifty business the staff had when transferring goods to and from stops. after some snooping through logbooks and laptops, she learned that the circus was illegally distributing + selling, and even stealing, tech and weapons for money. page after page, screen after screen, she found herself horrified that she was associated with such a corrupt organization. however, her extreme loyalty to the circus made her reluctant to think of resisting. despite her newly-gained knowledge, she not only went along w their illegal activity, but also cooperated with them, as the staff knew of Phuong’s revelations. she helped them transfer their goods through strictly negotiations, though she sometimes got into physical fights in the name of self defense and defense of her coworkers.
Admittedly, it does take a lot for someone’s loyalty and trust in a group that feels like home to them to waver in the face of a terrible truth. However, it doesn’t feel like you adequately established her loyalty. How did she grow to love the circus? Her job? Did her fellow performers feel like family? Did she enjoy the constant moving? What made her so loyal?
What led her to cooperate with something she found so hideous? Did she figure she would get punished? Did the punishment weigh more to her than the morally upright path?
Phuong continued w her magic acts, which gave her comfort in the suddenly unfamiliar environment she placed so much trust in. when the Second Omnic Crisis broke out, Phuong had extreme guilt about how much her circus was contributing to the new war in Russia through their distributions of tech and weapons to both sides. with information she fought for and stole from the ringleader, she exposed the hell out of her circus and was an integral part to their shutdown. from then on, Phuong performed solo and rose to be an international celebrity from her experience and charm
Personality: Phuong is a very coolheaded person who is dedicated to her craft and life mission. her life mission? to spread hope and happiness to those around her, no matter the cause. and she takes it extremely seriously, making her a very altruistic and charitable person. she takes it to the point where her obsession causes her to neglect her own needs and wants (but i’ll save that for later! :>)
like i’ve mentioned before, Phuong’s a successful magician and entertainer, so she’s naturally a charismatic and people pleasing person. what kinda makes her stand out to her fans though is the extent of compassion and exhaustion she’ll push herself for her fans. she’s on tour often and is constantly trying to think of new tricks to satisfy her audience and is always trying to make her fans smile and laugh a lil. she tends to be hands on w her fans, frequently having meet and greets and runs past her own security to high five a fan. maybe two. she’s as involved as she is because she solely believes that her life purpose is to give people hope and happiness. (take note: she feels she’s FATED for this, it’s not just an interest) (also, the repetition of hope comes from her dove theme!)
Beautiful character ;-;
with company, she’s a good conversationalist with the right amount of snark and is pretty chill. she likes to flirt and tease and finds nothing in it, so she doesn’t get flustered by it when other people do the same. she will, however, be very grateful and almost shy if you tell her how much you respect her work and spirit.
Not too shy I hope! A magician’s best quality is their confidence!
Relationships: i don’t mention Overwatch in my bio? i think she could be recruit material due to her knowledge of hard light, so these are possibilities if i decided to add Overwatch to her bio! these would affect in-game interactions too, i suppose
- Tracer and Emily: Phuong very much admires Lena as the embodiment of compassion and determination she is! Phuong also loves Emily for her cheeriness, and the three are just a bunch of big ol lesbians
- Symmetra: Phuong’s paid attention to Satya’s hard light work through media (since Phuong also uses hard light for magician work), and although she admires Satya for her skill, she feels sorry for her. Phuong herself has been tied to a criminal circus she dedicated her life to, so she feels some sympathy to Satya’s misguided loyalty to Vishkar.
Looks like it’s a distant relationship. Which brings to mind: how would Phuong try to approach Satya? Knowing her own troubled past, what would she come up with?
- Zarya: she finds Zarya very admirable due to her strength and how she gave up fame for her country, and Zarya finds Phuong interesting due to her beginnings in a Russo-Viet circus. they could sometimes be found talking about the beauty of Russia or working out together.
- Lúcio and D.va: Phuong is also a celebrity, so she’s sometimes chatting it up with them!
i can list a ton of other interactions, but basically she gets along with most people. in her canon lore, she admires Overwatch for their core motivation to uphold peace (and has a little bit of a crush on Tracer since she’s the poster girl). she also has an opinion on Talon, but in that she absolutely despises the destruction and harm they cause wherever they go and also that y'know. they kind of demolished her legs
Strengths: as previously stated, she’s not only hardworking but also a huge people pleaser to those she respects. because of this, she’s willing to perform to her extent to complete any task given to her, and maybe a lil more if she’s eager. Phuong is also a charismatic person and finds it easy to get along with other people, allowing her to work in a team and to draw people to her. physically, she’s an alert person and is quick on her feet, ready to slice and dice anytime.
Weaknesses: she’s willing to work to her extent, but that commonly means beyond her physical extent. she drives herself to exhaustion if left unattended and can sometimes become paranoid, making her waste more energy and ammo spent on her fear. Phuong is also an easily manipulated person, in that she realizes she’s being manipulated but allows it to go on due to her obsession with pleasing people. though it’s easy for her to focus on tasks, she also finds it hard to commit herself to people themselves, due to her complications with misplaced loyalty in Dove’s Eye. she finds herself distrustful of strangers and coworkers alike at times, tensed for them to reveal some horrible truth harming others. to somewhat cope with this, she tends to tease to feel “unattainable” and play hard to get with people who want to know her past friendly coworkers.
Glad to see the terrible, two-faced aspect of totally giving to others made manifest in this character.
Likes: she absolutely loves birds, especially pigeons and doves! she finds them extremely charming and finds delight in the coincidence that their symbolism corresponds with her life mission. she also takes an interest reading up in modern technology, especially in the realm of hard light (though she isn’t picky). romcoms are also her thing, since she loves the idea of, well, love and how it can make people happy. she also appreciates the comedy and often stores it in her mind to spice up her magic shows.
Dislikes: she is not a fan of overly authoritative, bossy people. she gets that there needs to be order, but if the person in command doesn’t deserve the respect in her mind, she’s very passive aggressive. on a more material side, she finds dolls uncomfortable in that they’re always in one expression and look kinda fake. and wooden floors. she loves how they look but can’t stand the idea of walking on them and scratching them up with her prosthetics.
Hobbies: as predictable as it is, bird watching! she loves writing down the birds she sees in a lil logbook and feeding them if she can. even when she’s not on a bird watching quest, you can bet she’ll whip out her phone to take a pic of a parakeet in a bird store she just finds adorable. Phuong also likes to dance and collect little things. she just got off her button high and is now collecting rocks
Extra: her general theme is magic and doves, especially their symbolism, so i hope that was apparent in my submission! but other than that, i think that’s it! thank you so so much for reading this in advance!! <3
Verdict:
I find Phuong to be a beautifully fleshed out character! She is exceptionally well designed, especially with the gauntlets and prosthetics. I would recommend you add some gold accents on her suit and hat, because the abrupt change from the golden tech to her dark purple clothing can be a little jarring. Perhaps some gold stripes on her shoulders, pant legs, and hat brim ought to do it.
“Recommend” is probably more in a personal taste here. The design stands on its feet well enough without further changes! (I just realized that might be a backhanded remark at Phuong’s... Uh.)
Her backstory stands well enough too, but some lack of detail makes it falter. See if you can try rewriting the climax of it, where Phuong finds out the Truth. You’ll find you’ll be able to sufficiently establish details this time around, I’m sure.
Her character is absolutely well done! The consistent inclusion of her general theme is a fine touch. Her quality of appearing perfectly amicable and peaceful on the outside while being perfectly not on the inside is quite well established too. It’s good if you put this detail into the conclusion (as it is) of her backstory. Perhaps it should go on to enumerate how her experience with Dove’s Eye changed her being.
Overall, Phuong is an excellent character. I recommend going over this sheet again and try rewriting some of the backstory. It has been the one I considered more thoroughly than the others. Good luck, and thank you very, very much for waiting. I know I’ve taken so much from your patience, and am very thankful you still hit me up after a long, long while.
Cheers.

MEDIA REPORT #2
In December, Overwatch title character, Tracer, was revealed to be a lesbian via Christmas-themed comic, Reflections. The comic, a back-story partner to the award-winning video game, features the young British woman zipping about London searching for the perfect gift for an out-of-frame significant other. At the end, she returns to the apartment, giving her gift to her girlfriend and receiving a kiss in return.
The community exploded with mixed responses. Some were incredibly thankful to see themselves reflected in this hero, while others denounced the decision for Tracer to “come out” as “SJW Tumblr fodder” (”Overwatch’s Tracer is Gay and Here Are Some People Who Lost Their Minds,” Crave Online). Overall, despite gamers being notoriously toxic in the way of homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny, the response ultimately came out positively, with people being overwhelmingly accepting.
The backlash seems to be a result of heteronormativity as Chrys Ingraham describes it. Ingraham describes heterosexuality as “taken for granted and unquestioned,” going further to say “[b]y leaving heterosexuality unexamined as an institution we do not explore how it is learned, how it may control us and contribute to social inequalities” (Location 12258). Ingraham describes heterosexuality as “imaginary,” as something that is considered “’just the way it is’ while creating obligatory social practices” which is ultimately harmful to those who are not heterosexual (Location 12258). Since Tracer is not heterosexual, she is going against “just the way it is,” inciting backlash from those who ascribe to an unquestioned view of heterosexuality.
Tracer’s same-sex relationship, therefore, goes against the culture of heteronormativity, which, as Ingraham describes, “render[s] real people’s relationships and commitments irrelevant and illegitimate” (Location 12297). The backlash against Tracer’s relationship seemed to come in two forms: outright homophobia and comments of the likes of “why does it matter that she’s gay? It’s just a video game!” (”Overwatch’s Tracer is Gay and Here Are Some People Who Lost Their Minds,” Crave Online). It does matter, though, as same-sex couples are seen so rarely in video games, much less as the cover character of the game.
Therefore, it is important that Blizzard Entertainment has not shied away from keeping Tracer out of the closet. With the newest update, including the new map Horizon Lunar Colony referenced in the article, Tracer will now have a new voice line referring to her girlfriend. The Overwatch team, therefore, is refusing to bow to heteronormativity and is giving the LGBTQ+ community visibility. Hopefully, other gaming companies will take note and put more LGBTQ+ characters in the spotlight.
EDIT: This piece was published by Mic.com, a rather progressive news source. Tim Mulkerin, the author, is the writer for Multi Player, the video game spotlight of Mic.com. He seems to have a particular interest in Overwatch, publishing an article about the game at least ever other day. I chose to focus more heavily on Blizzard’s/Overwatch’s release and response, as Mulkerin is simply the messenger of this information.
Questions:
1. Is it important that games- even first-person shooter games like Overwatch- provide LGBTQ+ characters? Is Tracer’s back-story important in a game with all-online game play and no story mode?
2. Do you think, given the information from the article, that Blizzard Entertainment has done enough in the way of supporting Tracer as a lesbian character? Do you think they are treating her as a genuinely fleshed out character or as a gimmick?
3. In your opinion, should games follow in suit and provide more visibility to the LGBTQ+ community, or is it not their responsibility?
4. Overwatch has provided a very feminist alternative to the misogynist history of first-person shooter games like Call of Duty and Halo, with 11 of the 24 heroes being female, and all new characters since the official release of the game being female. They have also showcased different races and body types, something not usually seen in games of this sort. Do you think increasing inclusivity is a step in the right direction for first-person shooters, or should they be condemned in totality due to their depiction of violence?
5. Do you think having an openly gay character in this incredibly popular game will increase acceptance in the notoriously homophobic gaming community, or do you think it will have little impact?

NORTH KINGDOM CONSPIRACY THEORY *proof!!1!1!*
before we get started this is only a conspiracy theory, im not trying to send no negative vibes out there. developers please dont come for me and my 3.6k diamonds, and thank you.
alright people grab a snack, drink some water, because this will snatch your wig with my receipts!!
everyone from the north is gay and big dick energy. note: this is really focused on the gay, male aspect of the game. not a lot of people talk about it and men arent presented a whole lot in the game. in fact most of the males are probably in the north kingdom from what ive seen. not to mention our ladies in the game are all clearly incredible stylists and dont need no man to take care of them, plus theyre like all lesbians,,, confirmed by me,,,
okay so we know for a fact the north kingdom are the brutes of the seven nations. in fact its cannon, they are perceived as a "nation in storm and fire" they are heavily military based. not to mention their clothes are styled as officers, generals, navy/army, alongside winter clothing presented.
in fact if they were presented they would probably be up close to the front lines if not fighting for the front lines. but thats something i want to talk about another day! anywho even in the main story line the north kingdom was mentioned several times as being big on the military aspect. next:
Tumblr media
what does winter represent? death. what does war represent. death. they both also represent a cold and brooding nature.
Northern Solider, Army Major, and Song of Blaze are perfect examples of fighting style clothes while Clair's Wish is a perfect example of both cold weather and fighting style.
not to mention in the storyline theyre the ones with snow, the name is also the North Kingdom and most places throughout the real world that are considered 'north' have cold weather. russia is north—cold weather, canada is north—cold weather, greenland is north—cold weather, you get the point.
keep with me now. gay men are fashion icons. throughout history gay men have been trendsetters and more importantly icons, fashionista queens, the stars of the show.
in fact in shakespearien era women werent celebrities, they werent feature in plays or book writes. if you wanted real recognition in your time you used a male alias until the world got their shit together and recognized you in the future when women start to get some equal rights.
alexander mcqueen a fashion legend, an icon, my one true love. an openly gay man who is still killing it on the runway despite his passing.
tan france. an openly gay muslim man who is a fashion icon. not only is he a total sweety but hes on the hit show queer eye on netflix and helps them straighties fix up their looks and turns them into lewks. i myself have learned from him and now we exude +1% confidence.
Tumblr media
(left to right: jonathan van ness, tan france aka our man of the hour)
gianni versace. beautiful designs, such an influential man and his brand is still alive. oh yeah also openly GAY!!
theres tonnes more too, but we'll save that for another time or if you wanna send a DM.
point is these are all gay men who are slaying to the gods on their fields. rather their battle fields. they are constantly having to push back against society, they get hate, they get criticism, they also have to fight against others in the same position. they are competing everyday against other fashion brands and their fans critiquing gaze. not only are they trying to be innovative, new and fresh, but they are trying to present themselves in a way where a majority of the people will like them. its a tough world, they face tough battles. but what are these battles equivalent too? competitions and fashion designs just like in love nikki. nikki is a better stylist than mela and is able to take back lunars design in chapter one, just like these men have to prove theyre the better stylist and win more sales and positive reviews.
now that we have x, and y, we can solve for z. proving how bloody gay this game truly is done to every last character besides that one girl whos trying to find her a man and maybe yoko/bobo and like two others. they all support the gays though so....
1.
night shade: not sure about his name and its too early to go through the lore to get this one guy sorry.
Tumblr media
okay first of all look at his clothes. clearly all black aesthetic, love that, but also look at all the unnecessary straps...idk about you but our man not only has a quick eye for shooting his targets but probably for his gaydar too. sorry that eyepatch isnt fooling anyone sweety, no straight man wears that man straps either. only our top tier homos do. case closed hes gay.
2.
Tumblr media
nidhogg is so hot okay. not sorry at all i want him to cut me open with his gaze mmmm brooding look is so Hot. i know i had more but just take one look. your telling me that man isnt a softie to his boyfriend? yeah right hes a total sweetheart. his personality description from lovenikkiworld: "cold, stern, but occasionally shows a softer side." need more be said? its clearly towards his boyfriend who he loves and respects. plus his hat is cool.
3.
okay here now to give some solidifying proof that its not just the men: Ozeca.
Tumblr media
shes literally slaying me right now with that red bob and authoritative hand resting on her hip. also look at her nails, theyre much shorter compared to other love nikki characters and yall know what that means...
second in her description shes depicted as a sizzling fire? sorry all that tells me is that she doesnt need a man to protect her, she can cover her own back, bye boys my girl is over here protecting the nations while yall be playing around. i know i trust her with my life.
hope you guys liked this! if you wanna see more send me an ask or DM. i take suggestions and ANY feedback. i have some more stuff like this planned so expect more...:-)

Your Monday Briefing – The New York Times
Coronavirus deaths exceed toll from SARS
As many people across China return to work today after an already-extended Lunar New Year break, the country is confronting two bleak statistics:
The novel coronavirus has killed more than 900 people in the country — more than the 774 people who died worldwide from the SARS epidemic 17 years ago.
The number of new deaths that the government reported on Sunday — 97 — was the highest so far in a single day.
Here are the latest updates and a map of where the virus has spread. The World Health Organization’s director general said on Sunday that an advance team was on its way to China to help the government contain the outbreak.
Analysis: Officially, the virus has sickened 40,171 people in China. But experts say that deaths and infections are probably being undercounted because testing facilities are under severe strain.
Inside the outbreak: In Wuhan, the center of the outbreak, our reporter met a family in which three generations have been sickened by the virus.
In Beijing: The outbreak is testing an authoritarian system that President Xi Jinping has built around himself over the past seven years. A writer in the Chinese capital described the outbreak as “a big shock” to the ruling Communist Party’s legitimacy — second only to the government’s armed crackdown on Tiananmen Square protesters in 1989.
Sinn Fein poised to enter Irish government
Preliminary results from Ireland’s national elections over the weekend show that Sinn Fein, a party that was once the political wing of the Irish Republican Army, is on the doorstep of joining a coalition government.
In doing so, Sinn Fein would break the hold that two center-right parties — Fianna Fail and Fine Gael — have held on the country’s politics for 90 years.
“This is changing the shape and mold of Irish politics,” Mary Lou McDonald, Sinn Fein’s leader, told reporters in Dublin. “This is not a transient thing — this is just the beginning.”
Why this matters: Sinn Fein has long been ostracized over its ties to sectarian violence. But many younger voters don’t remember that. Instead, they see the party as the only one responding to their day-to-day grievances on issues like soaring rental prices and corporate tax breaks.
By the numbers: Fianna Fail was on track to win about 45 seats in the 160-seat Parliament, followed by Sinn Fein with 37 seats and Fine Gael with 36 seats. The final results are expected today or tomorrow, probably kicking off weeks of coalition negotiations over who will control Parliament.
Germany’s political red line
A political drama in Germany last week — in which the far-right Alternative for Germany party played kingmaker for a center-right candidate on the state level — set off spontaneous protests in a country that is still deeply conscious of its Nazi past.
It also raises a question: Will mainstream parties ever feel pressured to break their own taboo against working with the AfD, the first far-right party to enter the national parliament since World War II?
“For many Germans, allowing the far right to be kingmakers conjures up dark memories,” writes our Berlin bureau chief, Katrin Bennhold. “It is a red line that many do not want to see crossed.”
Context: The drama took place in Thuringia, an eastern state where the Nazis first won power locally in the dying days of the Weimar Republic. They later won nationally, with the help of conservative parties.
Related: A researcher in Germany discovered that a 17th-century painting, on view for years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, once belonged to a Jewish art dealer who fled the Nazis and lost court battles to win the artwork back.
The hydropower dam that has Egypt worried
Egyptian and Ethiopian officials are set to reconvene in Washington this week to discuss a colossal hydroelectric project that some fear could bring the two countries to blows.
For Ethiopians, the $4.5 billion project, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, would confirm their country’s place as a rising African power. Ethiopia’s young leader, Abiy Ahmed, has said that “no force could prevent” the dam from being completed.
But the Nile is under assault from pollution, climate change and population growth. And many Egyptians fear that the project, whose reservoir is about the size of London, will cut into their precious water supplies.
Details: Egypt has justified its dominance over the Nile partly by citing a colonial-era water treaty that Ethiopia does not recognize. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt has insisted that he wants a peaceful resolution, but he has been accused of sponsoring anti-government protests and armed rebellions inside Ethiopia, among other destabilizing tactics.
If you have a few minutes, this is worth it
An uneasy political alliance
By becoming the junior partner in a coalition government led by conservatives, Austria’s progressive Green Party was able to put climate change on the country’s political agenda.
But now the party is also becoming complicit in Chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s hard-right immigration policy.
That is particularly difficult for Alma Zadic, above, a daughter of Bosnian refugees and Austria’s first minister with a migrant background: The coalition charges her to defend policies that were designed to effectively keep people like her parents out of the country.
Here’s what else is happening
U.S. budget: President Trump is expected to propose today a $4.8 trillion budget that includes billions for his wall along the border with Mexico and steep cuts to social programs like Medicaid. Congress can ignore the budget, but it will feature in Mr. Trump’s re-election campaign.
Switzerland:Voters in Switzerland agreed on Sunday to greenlight an amendment to an anti-discrimination law that had not provided protection for lesbians, gay men and bisexual people. The national referendum had been forced by critics who said the amendment threatened freedom of expression.
Thailand: The country’s deadliest mass shooting ended on Sunday, when a rogue soldier whose shooting rampage at a military base and a shopping mall left at least 29 people dead was killed during a firefight with the authorities.
Rocket launch: Solar Orbiter, a European-built spacecraft that launched from Florida late Sunday, is expected to complete 22 orbits of the sun in 10 years — and perhaps help solve mysteries about how that fiery star works.
Snapshot: Migrants play soccer at a refugee camp on the Greek island of Samos, where asylum seekers are waiting for approval to travel to the Greek mainland to pursue new lives. Few on the mainland want them, and other European governments have mostly closed their doors.
Oscars: The South Korean film “Parasite” won best picture, a first for a foreign-language film. Follow our coverage and check out our roundup of red-carpet fashion.
What we’re reading: This essay in Essence, addressing the attacks on the broadcast journalist Gayle King after she raised the question of a 2003 rape accusation against Kobe Bryant in the wake of his death. “The term misogynoir — the special type of hatred directed against women of color — says it all,” says the briefings editor, Andrea Kannapell.
Now, a break from the news
Cook: Italian pasta and chickpea stew cooks in just one pan and can be vegan by leaving off the final dusting of pecorino.
Watch: The final season of the show “Homeland,” starring Claire Danes as a brilliant C.I.A. officer with bipolar disorder, is now playing on Showtime.

And now for the Back Story on …
Revisiting ‘The Year of Africa’
Seventeen African countries shed their colonial status in 1960. Sixty years later, our archival storytelling team, Past Tense, paired photography from collections at The Times and elsewhere with writers and thinkers of African descent for a special section, “A Continent Remade.” Veronica Chambers, the editor of Past Tense, spoke with Adriana Balsamo about the project. Here are a few lightly edited excerpts from their conversation.
Can you speak to the decision to have more youthful writers be a part of the project?
We really wanted a certain dynamism to the conversation. And we thought that it would be interesting to ask youngish people who are really connected to the continent … and who have a sense of pride about it. David Adjaye, for example, spent years cataloging the architecture of Africa in a way that had never been done before. But he grew up half his life off the continent.
There’s always a period of discovery for someone who has a foot in a country but didn’t necessarily grow up there. And especially because the countries are so young, it felt like it’d be interesting to ask these young people who in some ways really benefited from all of the good of independence — their lives were shaped by everything that came after — to look at the pictures and respond.
What is your favorite photo?
I think the mother and baby picture [with Imbolo Mbue’s essay] and the Miss Independence picture [with Luvvie Ajayi’s essay] were really important to me because those were the two I found first, in October 2018. I held onto those two pictures as a kind of proof of concept. I also love the picture at the United Nations by Sam Falk [with Mr. Adjaye’s essay]. He’s so special to the history of The Times and just to know what it must have meant for those men to be able to go and represent new nations. To say, “Our country is three months old and here we are. Let’s talk about how we fit into the rest of the world.” I think that’s pretty powerful.
What do you hope readers take away from the section?
We are really hoping that people on the continent will read the digital version, and we’ve worked really hard on the interactive. When you look at the news photographs, it was a time when very few New York Times readers would have been to the continent. And so when we look at where we are at 60 years later, there’s still a lot of people who have never been and may never go.
And I hope what readers will take from it is a sense of possibility on the continent that I believe continues to this day. A sense of beauty, a sense of community. And I hope, interest: I hope they will continue to read some of the writers we featured.
That’s it for this briefing. See you next time.
— Mike
