Out of curiosity Snark, do you think you could make a small list of your favourite characters? Not like a top ten list or anything like that, just a list in no particular order containing your favourite characters, I'm curious if there's a pattern
Ha! I could certainly give it a try. Admittedly a lot of favorites depend on what i can recall at the time, since when I hop from one fandom to another I never stop liking them. Just my focus changes, you know?
But let me see if I can break them down some...
Hanna-Barbera:
Top Cat
Officer Dibble
Jabberjaw
Mudsy (Funky Phantom)
Daphne Blake
Snagglepuss
Brak [Space Ghost Coast to Coast]
Zorak [same]
X the Eliminator [Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law]
Peter Potamus [Same]
Hong Kong Phooey
Secret Squirrel
Stopping here, because otherwise I’d be listing characters all day for the different franchises within that subset. I feel like i could go on listing like the typical hanna barbera mascots, but everybody loves Yogi Bear.
Warner Bros Franchise:
Daffy Duck
Wile E Coyote
Foghorn Leghorn
Wakko
Pinky and the Brain
Porky Pig
Marvin the Martian
Peter Puma
Freakazoid
the Lobe
I like Bugs and others, but I’m thinking about the characters I legit get excited to see on screen. Also know that it includes variants, as Daffy Duck-- for example-- has had many different interpretations. But i still love all Daffys.
Disney Afternoon:
Scrooge McDuck
Ludwig von Drake
Donald Duck
Goofy
Pete
Fenton Crackshell
Darkwing Duck
All of the Fearsome Four
Tuskerninni
Gruffi Gummi
Gusto Gummi
Tubbi Gummi
Demona
Hudson
Lucky Piquel
Bonkers
Monty Jack
Gadget
Stopping here because it dawns on me I will also just list favorites for a billion years.
Disney [general]:
Grunkle Stan
Mabel
Hop Pop Plantar
Ida
King
Basil
Ratigan
Hades
Oogie Boogie
Jack Skellington
Sally
Rabbit
Tigger
Shego
Dr. Drakken
Perry the Platypus
Doofenshmirtz
Again, stopping myself. because this is a huge company.
Cartoon Network:
Double Dee
Mojo Jojo
Garnet
Sardonyx
Lord Boxman
Kelsey [Craig of the Creek]
Grim
Marceline the Vampire Queen
Jack Spicer
Johnny Bravo
The Scotsman
Samurai Jack
Robot Jones
Larry 3000
Tudrussel
I. Am. Weasel
Mr. Slinkman
Scout Master Lumpus
OKAY STOPPING THERE. I... I am older and like so many different generations of cartoons, man. I am just sitting here listing stuff I grew up with.
Nick:
Cat [Catdog]
Heffer Wolf [Rocko’s Modern Life]
Ren and Stimpy [must not be separated]
Plankton
Squidward
Mr. Krabbs
Kowalski
Skipper
Rico [All from the nickleodeon POM show]
It dawns on me despite watching a ton of nick shows as a kid, I don’t feel as equally compelled to go ‘NO THEY MUST BE ON THE LIST’ as I did with a lot of other properties.
DC Comics:
Scarecrow
Mad Hatter
Poison Ivy
Harley Quinn
Penguin
Aquaman
Plasticman
The Question
Raven
Starfire
Cyborg
Lastly, RANDOM:
Rocky and Bullwinkle
Goosewing
Count Duckula
One Punch Man
All Might
Eraserhead
Present Mic
Froppy
Joey Wheeler
Sam and Max
I have to stop. I am running my thoughts dry. Like I know I could keep going. I could just list all night. But this should at least show the variety of character types that I enjoy.
You’ll note the theme tends to be grumps, obnoxious sunny people, fabulous characters, unhinged individuals, and... honestly people who tell a lot of puns. Wordplay is my weakness.
EDIT: Also goths. I liked a lot of gothic characters growing up, and still do. But I think, like with older men characters, that ends up being a subset of liking the grumpy personality type.

Late Nights
Desire and Decorum/Ernest x MC
Summary: Ernest finds himself awake one night as he goes from watching his daughter to getting help from an unexpected source, Percival. Clara just appreciates the help.
Authors Note: so I’m planning a longer story for the end of the book so I wrote this short one in the meantime. No theme or anything just some sweet middle of the night stuff since I write in the middle of the night lol.
Deep green eyes blinked up at him and a tuff of blond hair formed a small halo around her head. Ernest Sinclaire sat the edge of the cradle watching his daughter sleep. He had just got done doing some late business and should be in bed. Instead he was watching her. Whom in turn was watching him.
“I hope you keep your blond hair,” he said a bit absentmindedly and leaned in to pick her up.
“Dadda, da, dada,” she babbled on playing the buttons on his coat. His children, were always fascinated with his buttons, thought Ernest going over to the rocking chair. It was late, just about midnight as he sighed.
Mabel parted her lips and stared at the candle unable to pull away from it.
He heard the creek down the hall as he tensed some. It was odd to be here where the mean he hated use to live. His wife had peered into the room seemingly looking for him. He smiled and got up to pass her the baby, he knew the drill, she was a pro at putting their children down to sleep.
Clara yawned loudly startling the infant who just laughed. “Mamama.”
“Ernest,” she whined and looked at him pleading. This was his fourth night in a row being awake this late.
They were staying with Percival helping get used to Karlington Manor and such. Ernest just had a hard time falling asleep here and Clara just wanted to snuggle next to her husband.
“Please come to bed this time.”
“I will,” he said and hugged Mabel close to his chest. She just laughed as he tried to rock her asleep. Clara went to stand behind him and watched her not even be close to tired. “Here,” she said getting on her knees.
The low hum with the melody started to fill the room coxing the attention of Mabel to turn to her.
“Now it’s your turn. Try singing my mama’s lullaby,” she said gesturing for Ernest to start. Her soft smile Mabel’s green eyes dropped a little but her gaze on Ernest.  She looked so much like Clara and his mother, he thought, with a chuckle and tried to find the right words.
Trying his hand at it, Ernst started to sing himself. The song about a hummingbird at twilight, he believed, at least from his knowledge about Cordonian. Clara had squeezed his hand encouraging him that he was doing a good job.
This was his favorite part as his daughter blinked rapidly at him and yawned herself. His voice low and the rocking motion kept her from crying out. This was only his third or fourth time singing it to any of his children.
“Percival left us a snack,” she said taking Mabel to lay her in the cradle. “Then I will try rocking you to sleep.”
Ernest looked at her a bit skeptically wondering if she could really do that. Then again warm tea, perhaps a cookie, and Clara’s soft body next to him usually did the trick. Together they walked down the hall checking on their other children.
Concerned flashed in his eyes when Ernest realized that none of them were in their beds. Clara put a finger to her lips as she could hear the talking. Creeping down the hall past the images of the Dukes of Karlington past. That voice was Percival, after all, he was helping him with the estate and staying with him.
Peering down into the largest bedroom Clara and Ernest shared a look. Inside was Vincent, Ernie, Laurence, and Georgiana half listening or had fallen asleep to Percival’s story. The fifteen-year-old was telling them about a time he was in Prussia.
Standing in the door way the two caught his eye.
“I didn’t want them to wake you,” said Percival Richards alert sitting up straight. Vincent was the only one still awake and ran over to join his parents watching them.
Ernest sighed and just nodded getting it.
“Thank you, I appreciate you helping them sleep. Although now is the matter of getting them to their rooms.”
“Can I help?” he asked. “I mean they’re…”
“It’s okay, get some sleep Percival,” said Clara picking up Laurence. “You need your rest too and thank you for helping us. I love you.”
“I love you too auntie,” he said in a small voice as Clara kissed his head.
“I love you too,” said Ernest picking up Georgiana and cradled her close to him.
“I love you,” said Vincent before skipping down to his room with Ernie.
Laying them to sleep Ernest just brushed the hair away from his daughter’s face and kissed her goodnight. Then did the same with his sons and wishing them sweet dreams. Clara had lead the way to each room where they would be situated when they visited him.
Now it was Clara’s turn to put him asleep and he couldn’t want for it. Laying in each other’s arms Clara’s sweet voice about a hummingbird at twilight made Ernest Sinclaire sleep like a baby. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to sleep at the Karlington Estate after all. At least he had his family with him.

The Hunt Chapter 3
Story Summary:  Its been thirteen years since Mabel helped Dipper defeat Bill. And five years since she last step foot in Gravity Falls or even seen her twin brother. Desperate for information and help, Mabel returns to Gravity Falls in hopes of finding her Grunkle Ford but instead, she finds Wendy Corduroy, the new sheriff of the strange town. Why did Mabel leave? What is Wendy hiding?
Chapter Title: Meeting Old Friends
Pairing: Mabel X Wendy
Coffee?
This morning, the sun didn’t try to stab at Mabel’s eyes as she awoke. She stretched as far as she could, her feet and hands bumping against the couch’s armrests. Mabel sat up and rubbed the remainder of sleep from her eyes. A bed would have been more comfortable but she couldn’t really complain. She slept in far worse places in her travels, many times fearing that she wouldn’t open her eyes again. Mabel looked at the clock hanging above the television set. 4:24 AM. She doubted Wendy was up by then and began her daily exercises. She went through her fifty situps and twenty pushups before leaving the house to jog for an hour. It wasn’t enough to build up too much muscle but it was suitable to make sure she stayed limber and strong. When she reentered the house, Mabel could hear movement from the other side of a closed door and assumed Wendy was up and about. She went into the house’s one bathroom and noticed the tub was wet from a recent shower. She got in the tub and took a relatively quick shower, she would have loved to take a nice long one but apparently Wendy loved hot water as there was very little left for Mabel.
Mabel was shivering by the time she got dressed and went into the kitchen. Wendy was there, sipping a cup of coffee, smiling apologetically when she saw Mabel’s cold state. “Sorry about that.” Wendy offered a cup of fresh coffee as a gift of peace. The younger woman accepted it with a scowl but as the liquid warmed her, she found herself becoming happier, despite of the plans she had for the day.  Mabel finished the cup and set it in the sink. “I’m going out for a bit. Do you want anything while I’m gone?” The younger woman felt a little weird sleeping on Wendy’s couch and using her utilities rent-free. She could at the very least pick up some candy or soda for the sheriff.
Wendy drank the rest of her coffee and looked at Mabel. “Cool, I got the day off too so I’ll tag along.” She spoke with an expression that said she wasn’t going to take ‘no’ for an answer. She was worried about Mabel and she wanted to make sure she was staying safe. A part of her, although she would deny it if someone asked her about it, was worried that Mabel might go after the magical creatures residing in the forests.
“Okay,” Mabel said, not putting up any resistance. She guessed that Wendy would want to come as well and figured that she would save the older woman the hassle of trailing her if she said no. At least, that’s what she would have done if she was in Wendy’s shoes. Mabel knew that the sheriff was perhaps a bit suspicious of Mabel’s feelings to the magical creatures of Gravity Falls after reading her journal. She fingered the hilt of her knife as she led the way to Wendy’s cop car. She got in the passenger seat and watched as Wendy called in sick. “Playing hookie? That’s illegal, Sheriff Corduroy,” Mabel teased.
“It’s only illegal if I get caught,” Wendy retorted, smirking as she pulled out of her driveway. “Besides, I’m the boss. Who’s gonna arrest me? Robbie?”
Mabel sat up straighter in her seat in shock. “Wait! Robbie’s a cop too?”
Wendy laughed and nodded. “Yep! He’s actually deputy now.” She glanced at Mabel and smiled at the expression of surprise still on her face. “He’s more of a pencil pusher though so don’t expect him to pull you over for speeding.” Wendy turned a right to go on the street that went through the forest. Soon, the smooth pavement became a dirt road and Wendy was careful that she didn’t push the car too much. She pulled over on the side of the road and made sure to grab a flashlight and a map in case they got lost but she wasn’t really worried about that possibility. She spent all her life in these woods and knew them like the back of her hand. “It’s about an half-hour walk to the statue,” Wendy informed Mabel. The older Pines twin simply nodded with a serious face. Wendy realized with a plummeting stomach that the old, playful Mabel was gone and deadly, hunter Mabel took her place.
The two walked in silence for most of the time. Wendy attempted to spark some conversation on how the magical creatures were faring but Mabel was too focused on scanning their surroundings, her eyes never staying on one place for long. Wendy sighed and stared straight ahead. There was nothing in these woods that would dare mess with them.
Wendy could tell they were getting close to Bill’s statue by the amount of noise. There was none. No squirrels rustling the leaves in the above canopies, no birds singing their songs, no random animal scurrying about the underbrush. There was simply their feet snapping dry twigs or disturbing the fallen leaves. “I don’t like this,” Wendy muttered, wishing she had brought along her axe. It wouldn’t be able to do much against the supernatural beings of Gravity Falls, much less Bill, but it would have comforted her.
The younger woman knew they were nearing the statue by her aches. Each scar that had come from her hunts burned with a higher intensity as the two walked through the woods. Her leg felt as if there were maggots feasting on her flesh and digging their way to the bone. She had cleaned the wound after her hangover a few days before but it felt like she did nothing to stop the maggots. Mabel grit her teeth and bared it as much as she could, regretting letting Wendy come with her. If she was alone, she could have rested but now she didn’t have that luxury. Maybe if they came across a creek, Mabel could use the excuse of getting water to halt their progress.
“There,” Mabel sighed, spotting the stone statue of the being that almost destroyed their universe. Her body was aflame from her old wounds, like the creatures were still attacking her. She grimaced at the dead grass encompassing Bill’s statue. It formed a perfect circle and Mabel half-expected it to be in the shape of a triangle. There was a skeleton of a small rodent, a mouse perhaps. From the looks of it, the poor creature only set the tiniest claw into the circle’s circumference. Mabel pointed it out to Wendy and the sheriff nodded in understanding. “Let’s get this over with,” the hunter said, pulling out the dagger she had held to Wendy’s throat just days prior.
Wendy gulped at the sight of the weapon, remembering the cool kiss it gave her. She could focus on it better now that it wasn’t threatening her life and noticed some runes carved into the steel. “What are those?”
Mabel glanced down at the markings with something of a bored expression. “These are symbols from different ancient civilizations.” She tapped the one closest to the hilt. “This is Nazar, or the Evil Eye, and like the others, it helps detect evil.” Mabel pointed the tip of the dagger to the statue. “The hotter this dagger feels, the more evil a creature is.” She carefully took a step forward and licking her lips, thrust the dagger into the circumference of the circle. Immediately, blue flame sprouted out of the steel and Mabel snatched it back towards her. The fire went out as soon as it was out of Bill’s range and Mabel laughed nervously. “That was close!”
“Um, yeah,” Wendy didn’t know what to make of the blue flames. The blade was glowing red from the fire and she didn’t want to know how Mabel was able to still hold it so casually. “Is, uh, that a good thing or a bad thing?”
“A good thing, ” Mabel answered, kneeling down to stab the knife into the soil. Tendrils of steam rose from the dagger as the damp soil cooled the blade. “A very good thing. The fact that it had such a violent reaction means that Bill is still trapped in the stone.” Mabel tugged the dagger from the ground and inspected the steel. It was cool enough to slip into the holster without it melting the leather.
“Is that all for today?” They hadn’t really done much but Wendy was more than willing to head back to the house to relax. Just being in the same vicinity as Bill, statue form or not, was enough to set her on edge. Wendy kept glancing back to the stone statue as if it would come alive at any moment. When she received no immediate answer, the sheriff felt dread. “What is it?”
“I want to visit Gideon,” Mabel admitted. “If Grunkle Ford isn’t here then he’s the next best thing.” She could tell that from the silence that she had stunned Wendy. She started to walk away from the site with Wendy following. With each step she could feel the pain leaving her body, except for the leg. Mabel would have to change the bandages soon again and her gut tightened uneasily at the prospect. “Do you know where he lives now?”
Wendy nodded, turning her head to give the Bill statue one last look before a tree obscured her view. “Yeah, but we’ll find him at that car dealership now. He became a partner in his father’s business and made a name for himself. Even people out of town come to see him and not for that psychic bullshit.”
“I’m surprised he didn’t demand full ownership,” Mabel laughed to hide the groan of pain. The foot of her injured leg hit against a hidden root and the jolt sent a wave of pain up her limb. She saw Gideon grow into a respectable man before she stopped coming to Gravity Falls but she knew that a lot can happen in five years. She’s a prime example.
The two exited the woods and got into the sheriff’s car. They drove to the once-shoddy dealership in good time. Mabel took the opportunity to massage her injured leg as discreetly as possible. It was getting a lot worse now, probably needing a visit to the hospital but she couldn’t afford it in time or money. Hunting wasn’t really profitable but at least the families tend to let her crash at their places while she took care of the monster tormenting them.
Mabel almost gasped at the sight of the cars lining the Gleeful’s car lot. She remembered them all being busted up and rusted but now their exteriors shined from care without a single scratch on it. There was even a sign on the windshields informing the customer of the possibility to test drive the car, something Bud Gleeful would have been too nervous to try before on the account that most of the cars he tried to sell were horrific. The two women exited their vehicle and Wendy led Mabel to the office when they couldn’t spot Gideon’s white hair in the crowd gushing over a mercedes. Wendy didn’t bother knocking before turning the knob and walking inside.
At the only desk in the building sat Gideon. He was typing away on a computer, the very action seeming strange to Mabel, but swiveled around when he heard the little bell at the door  ding. “How may I he- Mabel!?” Gideon jumped out of his chair, a large smile springing on his face at the sight of the older Pines twin.
The woman in question could only stare at the young man. He had changed in the last five years. He still wore the blue suit but now filled it out with more muscle instead of fat, however there was a little pudge at his stomach. Gideon sported a well kept goatee that was the same snowy white as his hair. He strutted up to Mabel, having caught her eyes looking him over, and held out his hand. Mabel took it but instead of a handshake like she expected, Gideon raised her hand to give it a quick kiss. “I never thought I would see such a beautiful woman again,” he said charmingly as he let go of Mabel’s hand.
Mabel could only blush and coughed into the hand that Gideon didn’t kiss. She thought he would have gotten over her in her absence but it seems that he didn’t. Gideon was still after her heart when she came back for her second summer and all the rest after that but instead of being really pushy and creepy, it was more of that puppylove Dipper had for Wendy. At times it was actually cute opening the door out of the shack and seeing a bouquet of flowers with a card asking how she was. “If you want to see a beautiful woman, all you have to do is look to my left.” Mabel gestured towards Wendy as if she was presenting her at an art gallery.
Now Wendy felt her cheeks start to become warm but she didn’t really understand why. Mabel just wanted Gideon’s attention off of her, that’s all. Gideon gave her a friendly grin but not with as much charisma as he showed Mabel. “Can I help you two with something?” he asked, looking at Mabel. If Wendy needed something, she would have called him or demanded that he come to the police station. Gideon was sure that it was Mabel who wanted his expertise, or at least he sincerely hoped so.
“Yes,” Mabel nodded, taking out her journal. “How much do you remember of Grunkle Ford’s journal?”
At the words, the cheerful expression melted to hesitation and a bit of fear but Gideon was quick to put on a mask of confidence for Mabel. “I must admit I’m a bit, erm, tentative to recall those chapters of my life shall we say. With all those attempts of stealing your Mystery Shack, attacking your brother, dealing with Bill, and, uh,” Gideon blushed with shame and embarrassment, “the other unpleasantries.”
“Like holding me prisoner in that insanity bubble so I would be your queen?” Mabel asked. When Gideon looked down at the floor, she was reminded of a hurt puppy and felt absurd guilt pierce her. He had turned over a new leaf but that didn’t erase all the bad things Gideon had done in the past.
Gideon brushed back his hair and grabbed his collar. From the years she known the man Mabel learned that his actions were a nervous tick, like Soos’s nervous talking. “But if truth be told, I remember everything from that journal. I have a photographic memory, you see.” He glanced at the closed door and leaned closer to Mabel, holding up one hand as if to shield the words from Wendy and jerking his thumb to the door. “Since its about those journals, I have to ask. Is the, er, other one outside?”
“No,” came the swift answer from both Wendy and Mabel. The older Pines twin pulled out her journal to show Gideon. “Dipper doesn’t know I’m here and I wish to keep it that way. The summer I didn’t come back was when I started to travel the world, finding my own Gravity Falls.” The joke made Wendy frown but Gideon didn’t know why.
For his part, Gideon didn’t question Mabel’s motives, figuring that they must be good ones. Anything paranormal would bring Dipper running like a dog to a big, juicy steak. “As you wish, my lady. Besides, it’s so much more peaceful around these parts without him trying to poke his nose into my business, seeing if I’m still evil and whatnot,” he laughed like it didn’t bother him. He held out his hand and Mabel put her journal into it. Gideon opened it at the beginning, his eyebrows immediately furrowing as he read of her first hunt for a poltergeist. He read the pages of her first hunt quickly but skimmed through the other entries, his face paling to the color of his hair and beard. “I never even heard of some of these abominations!” he exclaimed, now only reading the dates of the entries and what Mabel was hunting at that time. Wendy really didn’t like how even Gideon didn’t know the creatures which meant that Ford, whose journal taught Gideon everything he knew about the supernatural, didn’t either. “The dates,” he whispered, going back some entries to confirm his suspicions, “they’re becoming more frequent.”
“Don’t look too much into that,” Mabel chimed. “I think I’m getting better at finding them, not that there numbers are actually increasing.”
Gideon nodded on instinct and finally landed on the last entry. If he looked scared before now he was absolutely petrified. His eyes went as wide as they could and the book almost fell out of his trembling hands. “The wendigo escaped,” he read aloud. Gideon stared at Mabel desperately, like he wanted her to say that this was all a big joke. “You let a wendigo escape!?”
“Whoa whoa,” Wendy called out, snatching the journal from Gideon’s quaking hands. “Wendigos are a thing?”
“Yes,” Gideon’s voice was a trembling mess. He didn’t take his eyes off Mabel as he pointed an accusing finger at her. “Why would you go after such a thing? They are one of the most dangerous creatures in this dimension! Even your great uncle warned never to cross paths with one.”
“I know,” Mabel gritted out through clenched teeth. It wasn’t that she was truly mad at either of them, just saying the creature’s identity made her leg burn. She looked at Wendy who was still reading her journal but continually glanced up to look at her. “I lost its trail a few weeks ago and I wanted to see if Grunkle Ford had any idea how to track it down.” Mabel met Gideon’s eyes and talked before he could voice his objections. “I was able to corner it but it fled before I could kill it.” Her eyes narrowed as she recalled that day. “It got my leg pretty bad and I had to stay in a local hospital for three months before I could try and track it again. I found it’s trail but it led to a dead end.”
“Then it's probably dead!” From what Wendy read, she prayed that was the case but both pairs of doubtful eyes ruined that hope. “Even if it isn’t, why would you want to find that thing?” It might have been selfish, if that creature was still alive it was still killing, but Wendy didn’t want Mabel facing that thing again.
“It has her scent,” Gideon answered with a grave voice.
Mabel smiled at them sadly. “I don’t know if it's playing with me or not but I don’t want to wait and find out. That area has had twenty three fatal grizzly maulings in the past three decades even though no one has even sighted a grizzly in the surrounding area. There’s also numerous missing persons that all seem to be concentrated in that one area.” She gestured to the journal where she had written all that down. “It is probably responsible for a hundred more deaths.” Mabel gently pried the journal from Wendy’s stiff fingers and put it back in its pocket.
Gideon played with his tassel, tightening it and then loosening it a moment later. “If I remember something, I’ll be sure to tell you.” He looked crestfallen as he said, “I’m sorry I couldn’t offer more of my assistance on the matter.”
“It’s okay, Gideon,” Mabel reassured him. “Honestly, I didn’t believe that there would be much if anything on wendigos in Grunkle Ford’s journals. If there was, then the magical creatures would know and would have left Gravity Falls a very long time ago.” The words did comfort Gideon a bit and he grinned up at Mabel.
“Well, if you need a new car don’t forget to call us. I’ll cut you a good deal.”
The two women left the building and headed to the parked car. This time, Mabel couldn’t suck up the pain and ended up limping when she got halfway to the car. She slumped into her seat and met Wendy’s worried eyes. Sighing, she rubbed her leg to try to massage some of the pain away. “I know, I know. I should have told you.”
Despite her concern for the younger woman, Wendy made a grunt of agreement. “Damn right you should have. This is big, Mabel.” She chewed her bottom lip before venturing out in dangerous territory. “You don’t want to call Dipper, right?” Mabel nodded, wondering where Wendy was going with this. “Then you can’t keep stuff like this from me, especially if you’re living in my house.” Wendy raised her hand when Mabel opened her mouth. “And no, I’m not going to let you sleep in that shitty motel so you just have to deal with telling me the truth.”
Mabel rolled her eyes and patted her injured leg. “First off, sorry for not telling you. I’ll make sure to let you in on what’s happening, as long as you don’t get too involved. This is my fuckup, not yours.” Mabel winced and groaned, sagging against the seat. “Second, I was going to ask if you knew how to change bandages.” She smiled through the pain at Wendy. “It feels like that thing is still slicing into my leg.”

U, V, W, X, Z
U - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms
1. Keith from Voltron: Legendary Defender. (The fandom’s largely agreed on the last name Kogane for him, but I’m pretty committed to the theory that his dad is James Hawkins. Canon hasn’t given him a surname and they’ve been very cagey about his ethnicity/race, even though they’ve given pretty much everyone else one.)
2. Johan Andersen from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (He’s gayer than the rainbow deck he plays, he’s from Norway or Sweden, and I’m very dedicated to the ironic headcanon of him being completely colorblind.)
3. Irene Adler from Sherlock. (Well, technically from the source material, but I’ve enjoyed most other portrayals of her. The first time I’ve ever felt “Yas Queen” in my very bones.)
4. Asami Sato from The Legend of Korra. (The girl went through so much shit but never let it drag her down which is honestly goals. Plus she got herself one heck of a happy ending.)
5. Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls. (I greatly enjoy characters who give no fucks whatsoever and have the good grace to be the smartest, most ethically amoral asshole in the room with a twisted sense of humor. Bill was hilarious and I kind of wished we’d seen more of him throughout the show.)
V - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms
1. Klance/Laith. They’ve got so much chemistry watching their interactions in the show has my gaydar going nuts. (Plus the showrunners have been pretty heavy handed in hinting that this one could end up canon, and while I’m wary of being queerbaited again, you’re not gonna catch that stopping my gay ass.)
2. Ruby/Sapphire (Garnet). They’re canon, they’re lesbians, and they’re adorable. What more can a girl ask for? I haven’t seen their most recent episode and I want to so badly because I know there are good things going on there.
3. Korrasami. Personally I preferred this ship way back when the show was trying to keep Mako as the main romantic interest. The interactions felt way more natural and once these two became friends they became a really great team. Plus they ended up as canon, even if it was only in like, the last thirty seconds of the series finale, but I’ll take what I can get.
W - 5 favorite ships and 5 kinks you like best for said ships
1. Klance/Laith. Top five kinks…uh…I really like these two in an A/B/O setting, almost exclusively with Omega!Keith and Alpha!Lance. Praise kink is a big one, too. Size kink, also, for both of them (although maybe for Lance more than for Keith), and also xenophilia. Keith’s part alien and that’s something the fandom has loved to work with. And I’m not really sure if it counts as an actual kink, but, like, very sweet, very vanilla, missionary position sex where it’s more about making each other feel good than it is about getting off.
2. Creek. Size kink on Craig’s part, definitely. Tweek’s got a thing for dirty talk, and he’s good at it. Soft BDSM would be a good one for these two; nothing much more extreme than tying each other up, but that’s definitely something they like. Tweek’s also got a scent kink, and nothing turns him on more than how Craig smells after a good work out. And Craig’s got a thing for being ordered around in the bedroom.
3. Korrasami. Body worship. So much of it. Also cunnilingus; Asami strikes me as the type to thoroughly enjoy turning her partner into a quivering, desperate mess. Toys is also one, though I’m not sure if that counts as an actual kink? Maybe some forays into mild BDSM, since Korra seems to be the blitz sort. Edging would probably be a thing for them, too.
4. Style. Kyle gets off on giving orders, Stan gets off on taking orders. Kyle being a size queen is A+ stuff. I think Kyle and Stan would really enjoy edging; Kyle has fun pushing Stan to the brink and dragging him back until he’s sobbing for relief and once Kyle finally lets him cum Stan usually has the best orgasms of his life, so it all works out. Also, funny enough, I can see Kyle having a bit of a creampie fetish. Like, he likes having Stan cum in him, especially after edging him for awhile. Stan’s probably got a humiliation kink, too.
5. Bunny. Power plays all the way. Fighting for dominance, the whole idea of “You want my ass? You gotta earn it first.” Kenny’s got a bit of a choking kink. BDSM would definitely be a thing for them. Probably not anything too detailed or involved, since it’s kind of hassle, dealing with all that equipment. Role playing would also be a big thing for them. If they’ve got time and aren’t afraid of getting caught, then sweet and gentle will do it for them better than rough and fast.
X - top 5-10 characters who are yoUR PRECIOUS BABIES AND YOU WILL DIE DEFENDING THEM
1. Tweek Tweak (South Park)
2. Kenny McCormick(South Park)
3. Keith (Voltron)
4. Shiro (Voltron)
5. Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter)
6. Mabel Pines (Gravity Falls)
7. Marco Diaz (Star vs. The Forces of Evil)
8. Prim Everdeen (The Hunger Games)
9. Finnick Odair (The Hunger Games)
10. Bolin (The Legend of Korra)
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go (prompts optional but encouraged)
I really love the concept of A/B/O fics, mainly because I love toying with world building and trying to create a world in which this system works and makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint is fun as hell for me. Plus it’s a really good way to highlight how shitty sexism is since it involves turning patriarchy around a bit and typically you’ve got these male characters (some of whom are pretty badass in the source material) dealing with the levels of bullshit women have been dealing with for millennia. But it’s also kind of tricky, since the whole point of A/B/O (in my opinion, at least) is to subvert heteronormative and sexist readings by presenting a feminist perspective through a vehicle Straight White Men might be able to understand. (“When men are oppressed, it’s a tragedy. When women are oppressed, it’s tradition.”) And some writers…just don’t do that. They only focus on the possibility of babies and end up stuffing the Omega into that heteronormative, sexist perception of what it means to be a childbearing member of society.
I love it when the writer builds up a world that has a lot of the problems and issues we see in ours: a long history of bullshit ‘science’ that claims women/Omegas are weak or stupid or incapable of anything but being a wife and mother; microaggressions ranging from period/heat jokes to casual threats of rape and sexual violence written off as “just a joke”; women/Omegas living by ‘rape schedules’ whether they know it or not; political issues like equal pay for equal work, abortion, and women’s rights in general. Like, it’s not supposed to just be “Oh, my favorite gay couple can have babies!” Granted, that’s definitely a fun part of it, but I’d like to see more of the world building aspects.

June 14, 2017: Columns
Patience...
By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
As noted many times in this space, one of my favorite people in the whole world was the legendary attorney and judge, the late Max Ferree.
In one column, I admitted to having stolen stories from him for years, and, as his reply, he wrote me a beautiful letter which was vintage Max. In it, he acknowledged my sins, forgave me, then, as only Max could, admonished me to at least “Get them right from now on.” To that end, he mailed me a three pound packet of stories which I have dutifully used off and on for years, and faithfully given credit to Max.
What follows is, to me, the one most special.
In the year 1899, a young daughter was born to Sarah and William Max Ferree in the south mountains of Burke County. She was the fourth child born to Sarah, the other three being named Arthur, Lola, and Mabel. The Ferrees' named this child Patience, perhaps because Sarah died soon after the birth. This child was the pet of the family, even though William Max married Louise Morrison later on, who gave birth to H. Clay Ferree, the new baby of the family.
William Max Ferree was a south mountaineer, who had a small “jot 'em down” store which probably measured no more than 20' x 35'. He had counters and shelves in there together with a big pot-bellied stove. It was a gathering place for south mountaineers—a combination of saw millers, red clay farmers, and whiskey manufacturers on the creeks and branches that left the south mountains of Burke on the way to the Catawba River.
William Max was really proud of a new addition in his store, the same consisting of a paper cutter and a twine yarn holder. Afterward, every package sold there that needed to be wrapped in paper could be, with just the right amount cut with a cleaver off of a big roll. He figured that the combination paid for itself with a little extra charge on the dry goods he sold. One day in 1914, much to his consternation, he found that somebody had whacked off a bunch of paper on the rotary and messed up some string, allegedly in an effort to wrap something. He made inquiry of his entire family but all stood mute as to who has wasted loads of wrapping paper, which he sensed knocked the profit off quite a number of sales. Later on at Christmas, presents were being unwrapped and there for him was a package wrapped in such a fashion that he knew that the giver must of same must have been the culprit, who had messed up his string and wrapping paper earlier. William Max vamped a little bit and started taking the paper off the box and ream after ream came off.
As it did, he became angrier and he bellowed out, “You mean you used all of that wrapping paper, just to wrap this box?” He opened the box and it was empty. That added more fury. “You used all that just to give me nothing?” Then little Patience said, “But Daddy, what I gave you was all my kisses—I blew them all into the box, so it really took a big box to hold them and took a lot of wrapping paper. William Max held it up, hugged her, and took the box and left the room with tears in his eyes. Patience died during the flu epidemic of 1918-1919, Above all others, William Max took it the hardest.
In 1932 the old man passed on and left a Holographic Will, wherein he gave his old red clay farm to his wife Louise for life, the remainder over to his four children, H. Clay, Arthur, Mabel, and Lola. In his hand written will, William Max added this: “There is a box wrapped in paper and string on the upper shelf of our store back in the corner. Place this box in my coffin, because I've told Patience that I would bring the box to her when I came and I want to keep my promise and bring that box full of kisses, so that we might have it, God willing, through eternity.” Signed in the presence of God this the 4th day of March, 1919, by William Max Ferree – (Seal.)
To those interested, William Max's mandate was carried out and the box was placed in the home-made white oak casket, the interior of which was lined with worn blankets, the lower body covered with an old quilt. But the big box with all of the wrapping paper on it was placed across William Max's chest so that he might deliver it in person to Patience.
Max Ferree was born in 1924 to H. Clay and Hattie Poteat Ferree in Burke County, NC.
 Quieting your brain
By LAURA WELBORN
Jancee Dunn asked the question “Can modern day multi-taskers really learn to quiet their minds?”.  I for one have a hard time getting to quiet, I tend to have the TV on for no other purpose but noise as I talk on the phone or check my social media.
I personally had to train myself on another form of meditation- mindfulness. I found the following great strategies to get mindful.  First I realized all you need to do is pay attention to your inner and outer experience in the present moment, without judgment. Ideally, you get mindful in a quiet spot- walking, sitting at your desk or even standing in line.  It’s more important to be away from engaging distraction, such as your computer than it is for your space to be dead silent. Close your eyes or not, and settle your attention on the feeling of the normal, natural breath, where ever its most clear to you- the nostrils, chest or abdomen  See if you can feel one breathe fully, then the next breath.   Dunn states that it is hard for her to clear her mind of wandering but when you find your mind wandering the experts says to notice the thoughts and then just let them go.
Here is the beginning steps to getting focused or centered:.
Minute 1; breathe deeply shutting your eyes can help you focus on the inner workings of your body while leaving them open strengthens your ability to stay serene amid external distractions.  Inhale for a count of four and exhale for a count of six.
Minute 2:  find your natural pace
Stop counting and allow your breathing to fall into an easy rhythm. Pay attention to what your breaths feel like- not overly deep or shallow and compare that with your usual cadence. Tune in to the rising and falling sensation in your body from your belly to your shoulders.
Minute 3:  stay focused. Continue to be aware of your breathing. If random thoughts (work deadlines etc.) pops into your head don't push them out or linger on them.  Instead imagine each one as a harmless floating cloud.  This visualization technique helps you acknowledge your worries without responding to the emotionally.  If a thought still doesn't drift away from your mind, jot it down on a note pad and turn back to your mediation.
Minute 4:  relax Release your focus on your breathing and simply be.  Remind yourself that there is nothing to do, fix or change.
Minute 5:  give thanks. Think about something that you’re grateful for, such as spending time with friends or having the chance to mediate. Then gradually transition your thoughts to how you feel:  the relaxed stat and your heartbeat.  Open your eyes stand up and start your day- cool calm and collected.
Research is showing us that mediating can actually form new and permanent neural connections in the brain.  "Mediation trains your mind to focus on the moment instead of worrying about what occurred in the past or what could happen in the future"  Janet Nima Taylor the author of Mediation for non mediators.
Recognizing value in every life
By EARL COX
Special to The Record
Autism spectrum is a developmental disorder with a range or “spectrum” of differing skill and disability levels. Affected people have social problems—difficulty communicating and interacting with others, and controlling their emotions. Autism has carried a stigma in Israel where, until 2014, schools often expelled students for misbehavior due to a lack of special-education guidelines. Autism also excludes young Israelis from military service, hindering their integration into society and prospects for future employment.
But that’s changing. Israel is pursuing research, treatment and rehabilitation, and addressing the need to broaden social services and housing for about 8,000 people with autism. One of its most stunning breakthroughs is the Israeli Defense Force’s recruitment of autistic soldiers for its Satellite Intelligence Unit. The soldiers spend hours scouring complex satellite images for incremental changes that indicate suspicious objects or movements. The young encoders’ extraordinary visual recall and attention to detail have saved lives.
Created in 2012 by former Mossad Director Tamir Pardo, the program, dubbed “Seeing Beyond,” harnesses the unique brilliance of the autistic mind. About one in three people with autism combine cognitive and social challenges with “profound” skills that psychiatrist Darold Treffert calls “islands of genius.” Autistic “savants” are geniuses in music, the arts, math or memory—like the IDF soldiers in the visual intelligence unit. These soldiers also learn life skills, like using public transportation, to help them overcome social and communication challenges. Other interventions benefit and nurture lower-performing children and adults with autism spectrum. Perhaps Israel’s growing experience can help build bridges with the Palestinians.
A Tradition of Humanitarian Aid
Israel has long helped its Arab neighbors, even enemy combatants, with humanitarian medical aid. In Gaza, “there are no resources, no services, nothing for [autism sufferers],” said Palestinian researcher Mohammed Habash. In the West Bank, stigma and discrimination, poor education and social services, and war compound the problem, said Professor Sarah Dababnah. Local schools turn affected children away, so they stay at home. Families struggle with inaccurate diagnoses from untrained doctors, and no statutory social services or financial support exists. Nonprofits and a few dedicated advocates struggle to fill the vacuum, she said. Parents face emotional distress, with mothers often blamed for their child’s disability. Lacking early intervention, affected children grow up unable to communicate, use the toilet or feed themselves. Many try to hurt themselves or throw destructive tantrums. According to Habash, about 15 percent of parents think autism is a result of war between the Palestinians and Israel. Others blame watching TV, or simply have no understanding what’s wrong with their child.
Recently, Lifegate, an EU-funded, West Bank nonprofit, participated in an autism conference at Ziv Medical Center. Lifegate Director Burghard Schunkert called the cooperation with Israeli doctors, therapists and institutions “very heartening.” It’s important to keep up with the latest research, he said. “That’s why we’re here.”
See beyond the barriers
But while shared research and resources are vital, there’s a thornier issue at stake. The IDF autistic soldiers’ unit is unique because of the mindset behind it—the value Israel places on human life, and its corresponding desire to see people reach their full potential.
But in the Palestinian territories, people are expendable—an attitude influenced by the officially sanctioned mindset of glorifying and inciting death by martyrdom or terrorism. That’s why parents don’t quibble when their children are taught, not to excel and prosper, but to stab and kill Israelis. Muslim reformer Islam al-Behery says a “change of heart” is the key to successfully bring Palestinians and other radical Islamists into the 21st century. If the Palestinians could see value in every life, perhaps they would spend less money supporting terrorism and invest in strengthening the most vulnerable of their own. Surely their hope and future would become better. This humanitarian need is another opportunity for Israel to be a model to its neighbors—by sharing knowledge and resources to enhance the quality of life. Israel is indeed changing the world for the better yet for this they receive little recognition and very little appreciation.
Brighten your day.
A Full Moon On the Island and Amy’s Stories
By CARL WHITE
Life in the Carolinas
It was to be a full moon night when I arrived on the Island, I had checked into The Cove Bed and Breakfast, as is my normal habit when researching for another Island story.
Sharon is the Inn Keeper and has a good feel for everything happening on Ocracoke. I ask if there were anything interesting going on that night and see said, well Amy is doing the Ghost Tour that blends in a lot of the Island history. An historic ghost tour on a full moon night sounded perfect. Sharon made the call and I was added to the list.
The tour was conducted by ninth generation Ocracoke resident Amy Howard who has been a tour guide for more than 12 years.
There was a good number of people who showed up for the tour which started at 7:15pm. We were all warmly greeted on Howard Street and provided with a selection of mosquito repellent for which we were all grateful.
The tour was full of history that spanned from the settlement of the Island, War time, a variety of colorful personalities and of course stories of the unexplained.
We learned that dreams were taken seriously on the island. A dream of death or disaster concerned everyone. One such dream was had by Fannie Pearl MacWilliams. Born in 1894 she was the daughter of Department store owners John and Elizabeth MacWilliams. The family lived in a large Victorian home not far from the Ocracoke
Lighthouse. This was also a time when traveling from one side of the island to the other was not easy.
When Fannie Pearl was 16 she was a student of and Robert Stanley Wahab, who had returned to the island after going away for higher education. Stanley was only six years her senior and it was not long before they found themselves attracted to each other.
Fannie Peal was an accomplished student and her further education was supported by her parents who decided to send her to a boarding school off the island. When Stanley learned that his sweetheart would be leaving the island he sought employment in the Norfolk area so that he could be near Fannie Pearl. There love continued to grow and they were soon married. Not long after at the age of 18 Fannie Pearl discovered she was with child.
In 1912 the custom of the day was for expecting women to not be seen in public, so Fannie Pearl returned to the Island to stay with Martha Ann Wahab, her mother in law. Stanley continued to work in Norfolk and he sent money to his wife on a regular schedule.
At breakfast on one fall morning Martha Ann noticed that Fannie Pearl seemed sad, however she was unwilling to talk about the reason for her uncommon despair. It as later in the day that Fannie Pearl shared with her mother in law that she had a dreadful dream, in which she had died.  She said that her spirt hovered over her own lifeless body that had been dressed in a solid white dress and placed in a white silk lined white casket.
The casket was then placed on a freshly white painted sailing skiff. On calm waters a silvery white moon suddenly rose against the distant live oaks on the far horizon.
Naturally Martha Ann tried to comfort Fannie Pearl, however it was not easy. The next morning Martha Ann called for upstairs for Fannie Pearl to come down for breakfast, there was no response. She called again and still no response, with concern she took the stairs and opened the door to reveal the lifeless body of Fannie Pearl.
Stanley was notified as soon as possible, he responded with a request to please do nothing until he returned. He quickly made plans to travel and went to find the best casket he could afford for his young bride. With the casket loaded on his pickup he made his way to wait for the mail boat to arrive.
The four-hour trip to the island was with a heavy heart and upon arrival things moved quickly. Fannie Pearl was to be buried on the other side of the water with her parent’s family plot. This was not an easy task and the only way to quickly make the trip was to utilize a skiff. About mid-way across Martha Ann who was in the skiff behind the boat caring the body of Fannie Pearl, gasp as she saw the new silvery moon and realized that the details Fannie Pearl shared about her own death had come to pass just as she described.
As Amy Howard shared this story, I turned and started taking pictures over Silver Lake. It was a full moon night, however the full moon was behind me. It may have been dust, a moth or whatever, but whatever it I was, it was on perfect cue for Amy's Story. Rest In Peace Fannie Pearl.
Another interesting visit to Ocracoke Island.
