Grandpa Grinch
Grinch unpacked his last box. Now the house had a little bit of his own personal flare. After all, he shared the deed with Pam. Max was even given his own personal space in the living room (and he also didn’t have to bring his owner coffee and breakfast in the morning anymore). Now they were just waiting for everyone else to come back from Ookia.
At around 6 in the evening, the doorbell rang. Grinch opened the door to find McWinkle waiting on the other side.
“Evening, Grinch.”
“McWinkle. Good to see you”, he said. The two of them shake hands. “Won’t you come in?”
The ex-agent entered.
“What brings you by? Could I get you something?”
“A coffee, if you please.”
On instinct, Max leapt up and made a beeline for the kitchen.
“Oh, no no no, Max. I’ll take care of it”, his owner said kindly.
The hound barks in acknowledgment. He then turns on a heel and flops back onto his bed.
Pretty soon, Grinch returned to the living room with mugs of coffee. “Okay. What’s up?”
“Just wanted to stop by before everyone else got back. Wanted to discuss something with you.”
“Sure. Anything.”
McWinkle looks down in his mug for a brief moment, trying to find the right way to put things. “The thing is, as you know, Terry’s my grandson.”
“Yes.”
“And since Pam is Mellie’s stepmother, that’d make him, by extension, her grandson as well.”
“Yes”, Grinch repeated.
“And you’re in a relationship with Pam if I’m not mistaken.” The former agent raised his eyebrows in expectation.
To be honest, Grinch kinda saw this coming. It’s just that the words lived rent free in his mind, but never passed his lips: He and McWinkle were brothers in arms.
“I know. We’re both grandfathers!” He raised his mug. McWinkle tapped his own against it.
“That’s the ticket.” He cracked a smile, but it was hard to tell with his jowls covering it up.
After taking another sip, Grinch continues. “Kids grow up fast, don’t they? I never would’ve thought that a month ago, I’d even meet Pam-I-Am, let alone fall in love with her. Never really bothered me to know that her son had a baby on the way; I know I’m getting old.”
“Oh, that’s not what I was implying.”
“Better not have been.” Grinch tried to put on a mean face, but even he knew McWinkle wouldn’t take him seriously, what with his small frame and skinny arms. “Just kidding”, he chortled.
McWinkle chuckles. “I knew you were.” He sips his coffee again. “Anyway, what I’m getting at is it’s nice to have someone on the same plane as me. You and Pam both, actually.”
“Well, I’m happy to have boarded the Grandpa Express.”
They shake hands.
——
McWinkle returned the next morning to help Grinch prepare for everyone’s return.
At an hour or so before noon, Pam opened and entered the door, followed by her son, stepdaughter, future daughter-in-law, stepson-in-law and the children.
“We’re home, Grinchy!”
“In the living room!”
Sam and Jack helped carry Pam’s suitcase and carry on bag. Terry walked on his two little legs, holding his own mother’s hand for support. Gluntz held Molly in her arms.
“McWinkle!”, she shouted out upon seeing him.
Jack turned his head. “Dad! What’re you doing here?”
“Just wanted to pay Mr. Grinch a little visit. We were merely discussing…” He paused to think. “The kids.”
“You mean Terry and Molly?”
“Exactly, son.”
Gluntz, looks down at her little girl and says, in a baby-talk voice, “You hear that, Molly? They were just talking about you!”
Molly lets out a small laugh.
Pam smiles then turns to walk in the living room. She sits on the armrest of the couch and kisses her boyfriend. “Did you have fun while I was gone?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Do I have to check the closets for any leftover guests?”, she jokes.
Grinch laughs. “No, nothing like that.”
Pam looks behind him to their current visitor. “How do you do, Wink?”
“All good.”
The other four walked over, leaving Pam’s luggage in the foyer. Little Terry slowly stepped alongside his mother, babbling single syllable words. His attention was grabbed by Max, who approached the toddler and licked his cheek. Terry laughed and hugged the pooch.
Pam noticed McWinkle make another rare smile.
Grinch looked at his loyal canine being friendly with…well, McWinkle gave him his blessing to be Terry’s grandpa as well, so his grandson.
Sam snapped a picture of this sight. Gluntz gently rocked Molly in her arms, shifting her gaze back and forth between her and Terry. Melanie leaned against the armrest of Jack’s chair, smiling down at her son as Jack took her hand in his.
“You know something, Pam?”, Grinch whispers to her.
“Yeah?”, she whispers back.
“I was thinking…since you have grandkids…and we’re currently dating…does that officially make me a grandpa?”
Pam smiles at him. “Was that ever a doubt? Of course you are.” Then she kisses him on the cheek.
“Thank Seuss.” He wraps his arm around her waist as she puts hers on his shoulder and they lean their heads together.
——
Over the next couple of hours, Grinch did his share of watching over Terry and Molly. In the case of Molly, she didn’t really demand much since she was still so little. When it was Pam’s turn to hold her, he couldn’t help but notice her whole demeanor soften. She really was good with kids.
As soon as their guests departed, Grinch helped Pam carry her stuff upstairs to their bedroom. Once that was finished, they turned in for the night. Pam went out like a light as soon as her head touched the pillow, while Grinch was still wide awake. He looked up at the ceiling, smiling, glad to be fully in the family circle.
