Niger welcomes Russian troops, rejects US forces
Russian military personnel arrived at an airbase in Niger that was hosting US troops, a senior US defence official announced, according to Reuters.
Authorities in Niger ordered the US to withdraw nearly 1,000 troops from the country, which was a key partner of Washington prior to the last year’s coup. A senior US Defence Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed the Russian troops were not mingling with US troops but using a separate hangar at Airbase 101, close to Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger’s capital.
The deployment of Russian forces to the country’s airbase raises questions about the future of US facilities in the country after the withdrawal. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin downplayed the risk to US forces or the likelihood that Russian troops could approach US military hardware.
The Russians are in a separate compound and don’t have access to US forces or access to our equipment. I’m always focused on the safety and protection of our troops … But right now, I don’t see a significant issue here in terms of our force protection.

US losing credibility in Africa and Middle East
US officials are starting to realise that their strategy of pressuring Niger and other war-torn African countries to cut ties with Moscow and embrace democratic norms is no longer working, POLITICO reports.
Countries across the continent, including Chad, the Central African Republic, Mali and Libya, have turned to Russia for security assistance. Now the Russian military has arrived in Niger, pushing back the US, one official said on condition of anonymity.
Niger is interested in having Russian military specialists train local security forces and would also like to buy weapons from Russia. Niger’s Interior Minister Mohammed Toumba said this on 24 April during the 12th international meeting of high representatives in charge of security issues held in St. Petersburg. He claimed:
“Our co-operation with Russia is about learning what is necessary to fight terrorism.”
According to the minister, the Nigerian leadership wants the Russian military to train local troops in combat and weapons use. Toumba also added:
“Also, Niger is working on the withdrawal of US troops from the country, a senior US military officer will soon visit the country.”

So reading an academic article on the interaction between extractive resources and civil wars and the author casually mentions that in 1993, Elf-Aquitaine (oil company now part of French oil giant TotalEnergies) paid $150 million to Denis Sassou-Ngeuesso, then the former president of the Republic of Congo (1979-1992), with the expectation of securing oil rights… very cool, very neat to bribe an opposition leader and former dictator, nice corporate responsibly to “participate” in the democratization of a former one party state
This man turned around and rather than spend the money on campaign finance and all that good stuff… raised a militia and tried to seize power, killing 10,000 people in 4 months (1993-1994)
Low level conflict persisted until a second wave of civil war that lasted from 1997-1999 (another 14,000-25,000 dead for those keeping score) in which he was finally able to seize power… which he still holds today!!!!
And like the Wikipedia pages (which I get not final arbiters of truth and knowledge but still) doesn’t even mention it on Elf-Aquitaine’s page and the only reference to any of this is on the Second Civil War’s page where there’s an allusion to French support due to unspecified oil interests…
… excuse me
