Jey’s POV
“I don’t know what the fuck happened, I swear,” I said looking into the cold eyes of Joe as we ate lunch. “Kayla cried almost all night and that I have a problem with that. She didn’t deserve that,” he said, each word stabbing me in the chest.
“I know she didn’t, but I deserved everything I damn got last night,” I said as Jimmy laughed out loud.
“Damn right you deserved to get your shit rocked. What I can’t figure out is why you did it purposely,” Jimmy said as I frowned at him.
“What the hell you talking about? Are you still drunk from last night?” I asked as he chuckled.
“Oh, I’m sober and now that you are, when are you gon’ admit your ass was drunk and them demons was talking to your ass,” he said as it was my turn to chuckle.
“I ain’t got no demons twin, I’m good,” I said as Sefa raised his eyebrow at me. “I beg to differ; I think Jimmy on to something. Now spill it or we won’t help you fix this fuckin shit show',” Sefa said as I sighed dropping my fork.
“It ain’t nothing to tell. One minute she was actin’ nice and the next minute, it was the old Danielle trying to reel my ass back in. I just thought if I danced with her, I could get her off my back,” I said as Jimmy frowned at me.
“Yo ass shoulda’ walked away the minute she approached you. That’s why you in this mess now, always too afraid to hurt folks’ feelings even when they’ve treated you like shit,” he hissed as I felt my frustration building as he looked at me.
 Judging me for being human and trying to give people the benefit of the doubt.
“Stop looking at me like that, I knew it was wrong and I stopped it. I told her I loved Kay, and I couldn’t do that to her and wouldn’t. I just don’t can’t imagine how it looked to ya’ll though,” I said to Sefa as he seemed in deep thought.
“It looked real bad bro; I saw you before the girls did and I couldn’t believe you would put yourself out there like that.”
“So, ain’t no old feelings hiding inside you for Danielle?” Joe asked as I growled at the thought.
“Stop playin’ with me Joe, you know I love Kayla,” I said as he sipped on his beer almost questioning if I was lying or not.
“Your subconsciously insecure,” Jimmy blurted out as I looked at him like he was crazy.
“Subconsciously insecure...What the hell you talkin' bout?" I hissed as Sefa pointed at Jimmy and nodded. “That’s the word I was thinking too,” he said as I felt attacked.
“Ok, since ya’ll got a therapist degree? What am I insecure about what?” I asked as Joe looked at the three of us confused.
“Yourself and whether you feel someone will love you for you or have a motive,” Jimmy said sending chills down my spine.
 He called me out on it and I couldn’t say anything as he read me like a book.
 “Jey, you seem to forget Sefa stayed wit ya’ll before he bought his house. He’s seen a lot of shit, we all have,” Jimmy said as Sefa sighed putting his head down, avoiding my gaze as the table got quiet and my thoughts began to drift.
Man, that was a crazy time when Sefa moved in with me. Danielle and I were at the height of our craziness, and it was a month before I found out about the money she had stolen.
The fighting was almost nonstop at that point every word out of her mouth was something to try to rile me up. Then when I would explode, she would throw on the tears and I would give in because I loved her.
Yea, definitely toxic shit…..
------
One Month before breakup.
“Look, my brother is upstairs can you keep it down,” I hissed as Danielle whined. “Ugh, why did you tell him he could move in. He could have gone to your parents, he is their kid,” Danielle said as I chuckled.
“Because I said he could, but I see what this is about. Your pissed because I didn’t buy that diamond bracelet you wanted so now you trying to get me worked up and start an argument,” I said onto the bullshit.
“You should count your blessings that I am even here. No woman wants a man who’s gone all the time, you should be kissing me feet. I’m still here and you should have no problem giving me anything I want. No woman will ever want you, your life is too fuckin’ complicated, Jey.” Danielle said sipping out of her wine glass.
 “Well, you can leave anytime you like because I ain’t buying that bracelet. You just spent three grand yesterday on clothes and shoes. Hell, I don’t want another you, I’ll stay single and die first. You gettin’ more shit than me and it’s my money,” I countered as she scoffed pouring herself another glass of wine.
“Fine, I guess I can cut back on shopping a little. I need to remember you’re not going to go far with this wrestling thing.  You need to save your little coins for when the glory ride is over.”
“Are you really sayin’ this shit to me because I wouldn’t buy you a fuckin bracelet or is this how you really feel,” I hissed in anger.
“I mean ya’ll a good tag team, but I don’t see ya’ll splitting up and taking the world by storm as single competitors. The crowd will never rock with you like that,” she said laughing.
“Danielle, you can be such a bitch,” I whispered sipping on my glass of brandy.  “What? I’m just letting you know the real deal; you know that right?” she said casually as I put my glass down and went upstairs.
“Aww, did that hurt your feelings! I’m sorry baby,” she said laughing walking behind me. “Leave me alone Danielle, I ain’t doin’ this shit tonight,” I whispered slamming the door in her face as she began pounding on it.
“Come on, I’m just preparing you because I love you.” she said as I began packing her a bag.
“Tired of this shit, it’s like begging for punishment. This toxic shit ain’t normal,” I muttered slanging the bag over my shoulder, storming out of my room.
“What are you doing?” Danielle asked in shock, seeming to sober up as I walked down the stairs. “Getting you out of my house since its very obvious you don’t want to be here,” I said opening the door and throwing her bag outside.
“Josh, don’t do this baby, I’m so sorry,” she cried going outside to get her bag as I slammed the door.
“Don’t do this to me! You know I love you, don’t do this,” Danielle cried beating her hands against the door as I fought the angel and devil inside me as to let her back in or not.
I couldn’t stand to see her cry, not even after the hurtful shit she had just said. I loved her and she knew it.
“Don’t give up on us baby, you know nobody will ever love you like me. Open the door so we can talk, I love you,” she sobbed as I hit the door in frustration, wiping my tears. Damn, why couldn’t we just be normal!
I looked up and saw Sefa at the top of the stairs frozen. “Do I need to call the cops.”
“Nah, everything is alright, Uce. I’m sorry we woke you up with this shit,” I whispered as he frowned.
“Don’t let her keep doing this to you, Jey. She is using you and you need to open your eyes,” he said before going back to his room.
“Jey, please open the door!” Danielle cried as I unlocked the door and let her back in. “I’m so sorry! I don’t know what came over me,” Danielle whimpered, running into my arms.
After all the shit she said to me I’m comforting her, WTF is wrong with me.
“I’m sorry Jey, I just feel like sometimes I don’t belong, and I don’t want to lose you. So, I just say things I don’t mean,” she cried as I held her close.
 “You ain’t gon’ lose me Dani, I love you. If it will make you feel better, we can go get the bracelet tomorrow,” I said as she nodded.
“Thank you, baby, you’re the best,” she sniffed as I cringed. Damn, the tears sure stopped really quick. She had got me again….
--
Sitting in the midst of the silence and remembering the chaotic shit that I had pushed out of my brain was making me see things even clearer.
“I feel fucking sick,” I mumbled as Joe’s eyes softened.
“Let’s lay off ya’ll, he doesn’t look so good,” Joe said as I felt my stomach churning even more.
“I am subconsciously insecure, they right. Sometimes I don’t think I’m not worthy of Kayla," I said actually relieved that I finally admitted it to myself.
“I saw firsthand some of the shit you went through. So, I get it, we all get it,” Sefa said as Jimmy nodded in agreement.
“How much does Kayla know about Danielle?” he asked as I sighed.
“Only that we broke up about her stealing the money, I could tell she knew it was more to the story, but she never pushed me,” I said as Joe rubbed his beard.
“Uce, you need to tell her everything and I mean everything. She deserves to know,” Sefa said as I nodded in agreement.
I’mma tell her, I just hope she listens when I do tell her.”
“You know we got ya’ back and gonna help anyway we can,” Jimmy said as we got quiet seeing Montez heading our way.
“Sorry I missed ya’ll text, Bianca had to check on some stuff and needed my help.”
“Nah, you good, Uce, it gave us a chance to have a lil family chat,” I said wondering what Kayla was doing.

Kayla’s POV
After a good cry I dusted myself off and got ready for the day. This evening was supposed to be my first pre-birthday dinner and I was miserable sitting at the table with my girls.
“Passengers enjoy your time here in the Bahamas. Enjoy your island experience and be safe. Announcements and corresponding messages will be sent out as we grow closer to our departure time,” the announcer said as I sighed playing over my food.
“I’mma need you to snap out of this, we in the damn Bahamas,” Trin said as I took a deep breath.
“I’m pissed and I can’t help it. I mean why would he ever go near her? Does he still love her?” I asked truly trying to figure out how the hell did she even end in his arms.”
“Look, I know you’re mad but don’t let this spoil your trip. Tonight is your first birthday dinner and we all helped Jey plan it,” Cameron said as I cracked a small smile.
“Ya’ll always helping us out. What would we do without ya’ll?” I asked as Robin shrugged her shoulders and snickered.
“Catch some cases because I just knew you were gon’ throw that girl overboard last night,” she said as the rest of the girls laughed.
“It’s not funny ya’ll,” I said trying to avoid looking at them, hiding my own smile.
She better stay outta my way, I can tell you that. I always believe that you check your man, but I wanted to beat her ass so bad I could taste it.”
“She ain’t crazy, I heard when you mushed dat big ass forehead she got the hell on,” Bianca said as I laughed in spite of how I was feeling on the inside.
“She was doing all that big talk and hauled ass too quick,” Trin said as I played with my bracelet on my wrist trying to not think about beating Danielle’s ass.
“Look, go get a nap and get yourself together because we gon’ party tonight,” Robin said sensing my discomfort.
“Ok, I’ll try,” I said getting up giving them each a hug before I took that long lonely walk back to our suite.

Jey’s POV
“You think you slick putting that up under my girl post,” Bianca said looking at Kayla’s Instagram post and liking it.
“Look, I told no lies, she is mine,” I whispered as Kayla and Cameron walked ahead of us.
“You lucky she didn’t cuss yo’ ass out,” Sefa said as I smirked.
“She done told yo’ ass she is the visuals. You better get it together,” Montez said as we walked into the restaurant.
 “I am, ya’ll just stick to the plan to get us to sit by each other,” I said as Bianca snickered. “She gon’ cuss ya’ll asses out and I can’t wait,” she said walking away and shaking her head as I fixed my tie.
“Relax man, Joe is on it, that’s why he’s walking up there with Jimmy. They plannin’ to make sure ya’ll end up beside each other,” he said as I silently prayed that she’ll love the dinner and after this maybe we could talk.
Kayla’s POV
Reservation for Fatu,” Jey said as the host smiled. “We just got everything done Mr. Fatu, and we hope it’s to your satisfaction,” he said leading us to our table.
Tumblr media
“Oh, this is nice,” Robin whispered as I looked at Jey in disbelief everything was beautiful. No matter what was going on at the moment I was thankful.
 “Thank you, everything is really beautiful,” I whispered as he smiled at me making my heart race.
“You never have to thank me baby, I love you,” he said kissing my hand as I felt some of my anger resolving but not for long as I saw everyone rushing to a seat leaving only the two chairs in the middle.
 “Come on sit by me Kayla,” Cameron said as I scoffed. “Ya’ll ain’t slick, I’m not sitting by Jey tonight. Somebody gotta move,” I said as Jey sucked on his teeth.
 “Your being childish,” he said as I rolled my eyes. “And you were acting single last night so I decided it’s only right to oblige you,” I said as he growled.
“I can move Kayla, come on,” Joe said waving me over as Robin slyly slid over and Jey took her seat previous seat.
“Sit down Kayla,” Jey whispered as I stood looking at him like he was crazy.
“Can I sit by you Cameron?” I asked as she got up and switched seats with me. Hearing the snickers at the table I knew Jey wasn’t giving up.
 “Sefa, can we switch?” Jey asked as I raised an eyebrow at his antics.
“Fine, we can sit in the middle together. I don’t feel like playin’ musical chairs wit yo’ ass all night, but don’t talk to me Fatu,” I said going back to my original seat, wanting to knock the smile off his face.
“See how easy it is when you just cooperate,” Jey said sitting down beside me as I looked over at Bianca who silently told me to take a deep breath.
Yea, this was going to be a long ass night.
The food was excellent, and the girls did a good job in keeping me preoccupied on the dance floor. I ignored Jey but it didn’t seem to faze him. “We need to talk babe,” he whispered as I nodded knowing he was right, but I didn’t feel like it tonight.
“So, what is the plan for tomorrow?” Joe asked as I shrugged. “Maybe check out the shops and the beach,” I said Jey cleared his throat as I looked at him. “Maybe we could grab dinner on the beach and get some alone time.”
“Aww, I thought after last night you would be asking Danielle,” I said without missing a beat as he sighed. “Damn, that’s cold,” Jimmy whispered as Trin hit him on the shoulder.
“Stop making it worse,” she hissed at him as rubbed his shoulder.
Jey’s POV
“Look, we are talking after this dinner, and I mean it,” I hissed as Kayla sipped on her glass of wine with a frown.  I didn’t mean for it to come out so harsh, I’m just frustrated as hell.
Out the corner of my eye I see the waiter approaching us carrying a glass of wine and sitting it in front of Kayla who seems perplexed.
“Uh, nobody here ordered another glass of wine,” I said as the waiter smiled.
“Compliments of the gentleman at the bar,” the waiter said pointing to a man sitting at the bar with his glass raised towards Kayla.
“Who the fuck is that and why is he sending you drinks?” I asked, pulling the glass of wine in front of me wanting to get some answers.
“I don’t know who he is, but give me back my shit,” Kayla said reaching over and taking the glass back.
“Kayla who is that?” I asked trying to keep my cool. “I don’t know but it was a nice gesture,” she said lifting her glass into the air towards the stranger before taking a sip.
“Ah, shit,” I heard Joe whisper as I shot him a look before looking back at Kayla.
“So, some random motherfucka just wants to buy you a glass of wine, huh?” I asked as she shrugged her shoulders.
“I guess so,” she said casually sipping her wine enjoying my discomfort.
“Hey, that’s the cutie from the club last night that bought us that round of shots,” Cameron whispered to Bianca and Robin as I sneered.
I didn’t have time to let my thoughts run away for long as he stood up and began walking towards us.
“Aye, keep your cool, ain’t nobody trying to go to jail. We ain’t in the states,” Jimmy whispered as this motherfucker stood boldly in front of Kayla and me.
He literally is eying her up and down like she’s dessert.
“I heard it was your birthday, so I ordered you a glass of wine,” he said reaching down, taking Kayla’s hand in his and placing a kiss on her hand.
“What the fuck?” I hissed as Kayla seemed confused but smiled. “Uh, well, it’s not my birthday yet, but thank you for the kind gesture,” she said as I rolled my eyes. “You are very welcome, my name is Colton,” he said as I growled.
“Ok, you can move on now Colton, this is a family dinner and you ain’t invited,” I said as Sefa touched my shoulder. “Aye, just breathe man,” Joe whispered as unclenched my fist.
Who the fuck does he think he is? Kayla is my woman, how dare he even fucking look at her.
“Could I trouble you for a dance.”
“Nah, she’s good, move on,” I said as Kayla sipped on her wine. “Sure, I would love to Colton,” she said standing up.
“So, you just gon’ act like I ain’t sitting right here, Kayla?” I asked as she looked back at me.
 “Yep, just like how you acted like I wasn’t on the ship last night when you were dancing with Danielle,” she whispered as Robin and Joe cringed.
I flinched at her words but didn’t say anything, instead I watched them like a hawk as she followed him onto the dance floor.
 “Uce, you need to breathe,” Jimmy said as I ignored him and looked over at Joe who seemed like he was just waiting for me to say the word.
“Go get her Joe, before I kill this mothafucka,” I hissed as Joe got up without hesitation and went over to get Kayla.
“You trippin ‘Jey,” Robin said as I growled seeing Joe coming back over without her.
“Aye, you gon’ have to handle that, Uce,” he said sitting down clearing his throat.
“What did she say?” Bianca asked as Joe sighed. “She told me she loved me, but to take my ass back to my seat. Yea, and to tell you to fuck off,” he said pointing at me.
“How bout you take your ass over there and get your own woman,” Trin said as I sucked on my teeth.
“Jimmy and Sefa go get her,” I said my eyes focused on this clown’s hands resting on her lower back as they danced.
“I don’t see why she can’t dance with him? What they doin’ is a simple two step, barely even touching. What you had going on last night was a ho bumping and grindin’ up on you and trying to kiss you,” Robin said as Joe leaned over and whispered in her ear as she rolled her eyes at me.
“I agree, it ain’t the same,” Trin said as Jimmy looked at me and I gave him the signal tuning the girls out.
“A’ight let’s go Sefa, but I ain’t trying to get cussed out,” Jimmy said as Trin shook her head. “I hope she do cuss yo’ ass out because he needs to be takin’ his ass over there and not ya’ll,” Trin said as Bianca shook her head and looked over at Montez who he held his hands up.
 “I ain’t goin’ over there so don’t look at me like dat. I do got some sense,” he said as she seemed pleased with her answer.
Kayla’s POV
I want him to feel how I felt last night. If you feel how I felt last night, maybe you will think before you put yourself in these stupid positions.
“Ya’ man seemed very upset, I didn’t mean any harm,” Colton said as I nodded. “He’s really mad about something else, it has nothing to do with you. Plus, it’s just a harmless dance and I’m Kayla by the way,” I said as he smiled.
“Yes, it is, and I meant no disrespect. It’s just you looked like you could use a break and it’s nice to meet you Kayla,” he said as I smiled.
“It’s nice to meet you too,” I said as he looked over my shoulder.
“Here comes some more of your friends,” he whispered as I rolled my eyes. I knew it was Sefa and Jimmy
“Uh, sis, Jey wants to holla at you right quick,” Jimmy said gently touching my shoulder as Colton cleared his throat and stepped back.
“I don’t give a damn what he wants Jimmy.”
“Let’s get some air sis, tensions are high, and we just need to cool off. Uce, is feeling some type of way-” Sefa started as I interrupted him.
“Tell your brother I’m a grown ass woman and I don’t give a damn how he’s feeling. He can kiss my ass for all I care, now relay that message,” I whispered to him so Colton nor Jimmy could hear me.
Sefa nodded, rubbing his hand over his beard before walking back towards our table with Jimmy in tow.
The anger that flashed across Jey’s face as Sefa relayed the message didn’t frighten me at all as he stood up and began walking towards us.
“Look, Imma head out, my friends are back,” Colton said pointing at two guys standing by the entrance as they smiled and waved.
“I think it’s best,” I said waving back at them as Colton nodded.
“Have a good rest of your trip, and Happy Birthday Kayla.”
“Thank you and the same to you,” I said as Jey casually tapped him on the shoulder before we could go our separate ways.
“Sorry to cut in, but it’s my turn,” Jey said grabbing my hand, pulling me to him before Colton could even respond.
Reading the room, Colton held his hands up in surrender. “She’s all yours big guy, I was just about to leave anyway,” he said as Jey smirked at him.
“I’m glad you realize that, now take yo’ ass on,” Jey said as I shook my head. “Bye Colton and thanks,” I said as he smiled and waved before walking back over to his friends as Jey wore a deep frown.
“That was rude,” I said as he scoffed. “Yea, it was rude and I don’t give a fuck. You really think I was gon’ let that shit ride, another man trying to push up on you, fuck you thought was gon’ happen.”
“Jey, I’m a grown ass woman,” I hissed as he licked his lips caressing my hips.
“Yea, you are and I’m a grown ass man. So, I don’t mind coming to get my woman,” Jey said as I smiled.
 “Oh, really, because I wasn’t aware I was your woman because you damn sure seemed to have a lapse of memory last night,” I said as he pulled me closer.
“Look, I get it, Kay. I hurt you, but when are you going to actually listen to me and let me explain,” he said as I pushed him away.
“When you actually understand how that shit made me feel and want to have a real conversation about why you even put yourself in that kind of position to begin with, especially with her, and speak of the devil, there she is.”
“What are you talking about?” he whispered as I pointed to the entrance and there stood Danielle with a smirk.
“Let’s just go Kayla, it ain’t worth it.”
“No, I ain’t going nowhere, this is my night. That bitch can leave,” I said as Danielle, and I stared each other down from across the room.
Sefa’ POV
“I know this isn’t happening,” I whispered seeing Danielle and hearing Cameron’s sharp intake of breath.
“I’mma beat this bitch ass,” Bianca said as Montez shushed her.
“Don’t shush me….I’m just sayin’ she got one time and she mine,” Bianca said as he tried to calm her down.
“All the places on this fuckin’ island and she’s here,” Robin said as Joe seemed speechless. “It’s the audacity for me,” Trin said as Jimmy nodded.
“Damn, she really just thinks she can do what she wants,” Jimmy said as Kayla and Jey came and sat back down.
“Boo, you ready to go?” Robin asked as Kayla laughed.
“Nah, I’m about to beat her ass and then we can leave.”
“Excuse me, what?” Jey asked as Kayla took off her earrings.
“You heard me, I’m bout to beat her motherfuckin’ ass, and then we can leave,” Kayla said louder as Bianca smirked.
“That’s my girl, whoop dat bitch ass. She been playin’ in your face like she ain’t got no sense.”
“Maybe we should just leave,” Joe said as Danielle walked in front of Jey and Kayla.
“Joe, I love you for trying to be the voice of reason, but she got this one coming,” Trin whispered as I saw Kayla shift in her seat wearing a smile.
Danielle had just walked into the lion’s den and didn’t even know it.
Kayla’s POV
“Aww, Jey you still going all out for special occasions I see,” Danielle said picking up a glass from off the table as I smirked at her, as Jey was livid.
“Leave Danielle-” Jey hissed as I interrupted him.
“Jey, don’t say another word, I got it. Danielle, let me holla at you on the terrace,” I said standing up with my glass a wine as everyone looked on almost scared to move.
“Oou, you in danger girl, and don’t even know it,” Trin whispered as I smiled, playing it cool.
“Sure, I see no reason as to why we can’t have a conversation like grown women,” she said heading towards the terrace as Jey stood up.
“Kayla, baby, I can-”
“Your not needed for this conversation,” I said as his eyes pleaded with me to not do anything crazy.
“I’m fine….It’s cool,” I said giving his hand a comforting squeeze before following her onto the terrace and closing the door behind me.
The waves crashing upon the shore represented my own anger that was raging inside me as we were finally standing face to face.
Her smugness pissing me off, but I couldn’t let it show. I needed answers first, and after that…..  Oh, I’mma  beat dat ass for the 9-9- and the 2000’s.
“I’m glad we could talk after last night,” Danielle said as I nodded.
“After last night, I was so crazy angry. I was wondering what I’d do if I saw you again.  I mean would I just lose control and beat yo’ ass on site.” I said as Danielle backed up slightly holding her hands up.
“Now, you said we were going to talk,” Danielle said as I smiled.
“You know I even dreamed about throwing your ass overboard last night,” I said casually taking a sip of my wine as she seemed nervous.
“So, are we going to talk, or are you going to keep threatening me.”
“We are talking Danielle, but let’s be real…..I don’t know you, but let me make it crystal clear.  Stay away from Jey, or we’re gonna have a problem,” I said as she smirked.
“Oh, so you speak for him now. Man, where did he find you, Ms. Perfect?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know, but it’s none of your business. Danielle, why did you show up here?” I asked truly curious.
“Well, you are the longest relationship he’s been in since we broke up four years ago. I’m trying to figure out what makes you so damn special,” she said as I shook my head, this bitch was asking for it.
  “I speak life into him and I’m actually there for him. Something, you didn’t do, apparently,” I said as she rolled her eyes.
“Look, Jey knew he couldn’t do better than me, so he was ok with it. Normally he realizes the error of his ways and then we fall right back into our routine within a month. It’s just takin’ us a little longer this time,” Danielle said as I looked at her like she was crazy.
“It’s been four years!” I shouted as she sneered at me. “Like you are delusional as fuck. Baby, it’s been over between you and Jey. It was over a year before I even came in the picture.”
“I’m not delusional, I’m speaking facts.”
The more she rambled, the more things started to make sense. She was a toxic ass narcissist, emotionally abusive, and God knows what else and in that moment of realization, I saw red.
“You made his life a living hell, didn’t you?” I whispered as she smiled.
 Yea, I’m done talking now. Without hesitation, I flicked my glass of wine in her face as she gasped in shock.
“That was for showing your fuckin’ face here,” I said as she tried to wipe her face off with her hands. “You fuckin’ bitch,” she said whispered through gritted teeth.
“Yea, that’s me, and don’t you forget it.” Rearing back, I punched her in the face, as she collapsed to the ground holding her jaw.
“That one was for Jey,” I said as she used the railing for support to pull herself up. “I’m going to kill you,” she whispered as I tackled her, our momentum causing us both to go over the railing, and onto the sand.
The force of our landing knocking the wind knocked out of both. “Shit!” I hissed, rubbing the back of my head momentarily, but regained my senses seeing Danielle trying to run away.
Shaking the cobwebs loose, I kicked off my heels and grabbed her by the leg “Nah, you been talkin’ all dat shit, what’s good!” I yelled slanging her back down onto the sand.
“Ah! Your crazy!” Danielle screamed as I climbed on top of her punching anywhere I could as she tried to block my fists with her arms.
“Bitch you gon’ learn today, this ain’t what you want!”
Jey’s POV
The loud crash was enough for us all to run onto the terrace to see what the hell was going on.
There was Kayla on top of Danielle in the sand unloading on her ass as Danielle was screaming trying to cover herself up.
“Uce, get her ass before they call the damn cops,” Sefa hissed as we both jumped over the rail running to separate the girls.
“Kay, come on that’s enough,” I said pulling her off of Danielle as she kept a tight grip on her hair.
“Let go! Let go!” Danielle screamed as Sefa pried Kayla’s hands out of her hair, but not before Kayla broke her other arm free from my grasp and punched Danielle a couple times on the back of the head.
“Damn! You can’t get her, Jey!” Joe yelled as Jimmy was helping him get ahold of Danielle.
“I got her! Ya’ll just get her ass outta here!” I yelled as Kayla tried to break free.
“You bitch! This ain’t over!” Danielle screamed as Jimmy and Joe were dragging her away.
“You damn right it ain’t, cause’ every time I see you, it’s on-site bitch!” Kayla yelled struggling against me as the girls came over to help calm her down.
“Calm down, Kayla, you got her, and it’s done,” Trin said as Kayla finally stopped fighting against me.
“I got you, just calm down baby. It’s over, alright,” I whispered as Kayla turned and looked at me with tears in her eyes.
 “I’m sorry,” she whispered as the girls surrounded her, pushing me away in the process before I could respond.
“Ya’ll take her and get her cleaned up,” Sefa said as Montez picked up Kayla’s shoes up the ground and handed them to Cameron.
“I’ll go check on Joe and Jimmy,” Montez said as I nodded feeling a migraine coming on. All this was my fault….
“I’ll go pay so we can head back to the ship,” I said just feeling defeated watching the girls comforting Kayla when it should have been me.
Yep, night two official had gone to shit.

Of all the things Billy loves about Steve, how funny he is, how attentive he is in bed, how every Saturday night, he makes Billy’s favourite pasta, how he’s always flexible when plans change, like the time they got halfway to California before Billy broke down about leaving Max, so Steve turned the car around, broke the lease on their new place and endured living with his parents for another six months and grovelled to Keith to get his job back so they could afford to save for a place in Hawkins, what he loves the most is how Steve looks the other way when Billy needs to tell lies for self preservation.
Case in point - Billy went to therapy this morning. That had been Steve’s sole request when agreeing to head back to Hawkins, that Billy go to therapy, to work through his complicated emotions about his parents, his sexuality, and everything related to the Mindflayer and Starcourt. Billy had complied, of course he had. How could he not when Steve was giving up something so major for Billy?
Even though it was one of the most difficult things he’s ever done, Billy goes back week after week, talking to a kind older hippyish woman named Gladys about how it felt to have his mother abandon him when he was nine and his father so thoroughly reject everything about him for basically his entire life. It takes so much out of him, leaving him feeling exhausted but hopeful that he can find peace some day.
His sexuality was easier. It didn’t take long for Gladys to help him understand that there’s nothing wrong with who he is and the love that he and Steve share. It feels amazing to go in each week and excitedly tell Gladys about the dinners he and Steve made together or the hikes they’ve gone on, how they were bold enough to hold hands as they walked the unmarked trails.
This morning they did a deep dive into how it felt to have his father beat the sweet, caring, soft little boy out of him, turning Billy into someone that he couldn’t recognize as himself for a long time. Gladys let him cry for a long time, just sitting there patting his hand as the tears flowed.
He’d finally regained his composure long enough to walk to his car, but the second he’d closed the door and buckled his seatbelt, he’d started again, like his tears were a faucet he couldn’t turn off.
He takes Tuesdays, his therapy days, off work, because being around people after cracking his heart so wide open is too tough. It’s usually a good thing, the time to himself, but right now, he’d give anything to be around other people, to be forced to hold the tears back.
But Steve works until 5, so it’s just Billy sitting alone on the couch, crying on and off all afternoon. He barely manages to stop before he hears Steve’s key in the lock.
Steve finds him there, eyes puffy and rimmed red. He stops and takes the sight of him in for a minute before asking if he’s ok.
Billy’s not ready to fully disclose what he talks about in therapy to Steve. He doesn’t want him to think it’s hurting more than it helps, even if some weeks, that’s exactly what it feels like, so he thinks fast.
“Uh, yeah, it’s nothing. Just Days of Our Lives. Patch and Kayla were…” he can’t even finish the sentence before he’s welling up again.
Steve has to know that’s not what’s trouble Billy. Days is Steve’s show, not his. He’s not going to sit in the living room crying over the domestic troubles of the former marine turned mercenary and the love of his life.
But Steve is good and sweet and kind so he just nods and heads to the kitchen. He returns with a pint of ice cream and two spoons and then sits beside Billy, wrapping him in his arms and letting him cry between bites of the cool, creamy treat.
Some day, he’ll share everything with Steve, but for now, this is enough. More than enough. It’s perfect.

Jenna Ortega x fem! reader
Tumblr media
Tuesday morning, you’re on your bed scrolling on instagram “hey y/n” you looked up from your phone to see Kayla your (best friend /dorm buddy) “morning KY” your voice sounded raspy and deep “get ready well meet the other for breakfast in 30” Kayla would always “mommy you” is what you’d call it “ok mom” you yawned while dragging your feet to get dressed as you got dressed you could hear Kayla turn on the coffee machine on  “ky make me some choky milk while you’re on it” your voice sounded muffled since the oversized t-shirt you were putting on was over your mouth “choky?” she yelled back from the kitchen “ you know, chocolate milk” you could slightly hear her giggle from here “you are such a child y/n , oh and did u check the mail I put for u on your side table”
“Mail?” you returned back
“Yes mail”
“Who uses those any more we live in a gen-z generation what the fu-“
“Watch it”
“Yes yes sorry”
You reach over to check the mail “to y/n y/l/n, please read” you grabbed it and went over to the door to put on your black and white convers “got a clue?” you said nodding towards the piece of paper “nope there’s only one way to find out” “eww” your nose scrunched from disgust “don’t ever say that ever again” Kayla shrugs and smirks at your reaction “sorry not sorry” you slide the mail in your large cargos pocket she walks up to you and gives you a mug full of hot chocolate you smile at her and mutter “thank you” once your done putting on your shoes you stand and YANK the mug from her hand “ hey, calm down” you ignored the statement and grab your phone “will u drive ?” Kayla nods slightly and lets out a small “mmhm” you throw her the car keys and open the door for her she waits as you look the door then asks “did you open it yet?” you turn around with your heels and shake your head no as you slide your keys in Kayla’s tote bag “in the car” you mumble just enough for her to hear you
Once you’re in the passenger seat you waiting for Kayla and Jake to join the car you get the piece of paper out your pocket and as you were about to open it you hear the window banging “FUCK CHRIST” you yelled loud enough to scare the mile away birds “hey fuckerrr” Jake said as he enter the backseat of car “language both of you” “sorry mom” you mumble under your breath, see she mommys you. As soon as Kayla starts the car she looks to her right and asks “did u open it yet ?” she points to the envelope in your hand  but her hands still on the wheel “nope, was about to until this guy” you point to Jake “scared the absolute crap out of me” “yeah what is that anyway ?”Jake jumps in “mail” you reply “mail?” “yep mail” you turn to give Jake a sip of your drink in hand “want some?” he farrows his brows and looks in the mug “coffee?” you squint your eyes at him “ofc not its choky milk” “hell yeah” he returns as he takes the mug from hand “children” the older girl next to you mumble but just enough for both of you to hear “heyyy” both you and Jake yell offended in sync “anyway, open it y/n it might be important” Jake nods in agreement “I mean it was on MAIL so probably” you take a deep breath and rip the envelope open you unfold the paper and read it out loud “dear y/n l/n it has come to consideration that you will be a great part or acting cast” at that moment you stopped and looked at your friends whom their jaws were also on the ground you continue to read quietly this time then you turn  to look at your friends who were already looking and said “I got the lead role” Kayla full on stopped the car to look at you “CONGRATSS” you hear Jake chant in the back while Kayla is yelling to your face “CONGRATS IS RIGHT OMG YOUR GONNA BE A FAMOUS ACTOR” but then Jake suddenly stopped at looked at you with a SEIROUS LOOK and said “but wait what about school exams are in 3 months” “its fine ill study on set just like last time” you always wanted to become a famous Oscar winning actor it was more like a dream then a future plus your friends were used to you getting acting jobs but you were always a background or extra but never the lead  “Kayla come on I am hungry and we don’t wanna be late for breakfast” she nodded and then you added “oh and please please don’t tell anyone” “not even our friends?” Jake asked “nope not even our friends”
Once your back home from all the lectures you had you fell to your bed head first you reach for the paper once again and wrote the number on there to your phone then the call button you press call and wait anxiously for a voice on the other side of the call and it happened “hello?” a soft and calm voice “hi” you return back “I am y/n y/l/n I got a letter in the mai-“ “oh miss y/l/n we’ve been waiting for your call” she interrupted “I am Tim burton’s assistant I handle all the calls, my name Is Sam ,Tim asked me to give you his number once you call, please write this down” you jumped out of bed running around the room looking for a pen and paper luckily for you there was some on the desk “Tim burton’s number is ********* you wrote the number down as fast as possible and as you were about to thank her “don’t leave him waiting make sure to text him right away” then ‘beeeepp’ the call ended you put Tim’s number immediately and text him just like how Sam said. you where chill you think “hey I am y/n y/l/n” is all you said but thank fully he was quick to see the text “hello y/n I’ve been waiting for you” “sorry” was all you could say “I saw all your previous work and I truly believe that you can be a worldwide star and I would love to have the opportunity to help you take that step so my question is will you want to join me and my team?” “Yes please I would love to join your team and it would be an honor to work with you and be your lead” ok that was too desperate “good me and my no our team will be waiting for you next week in steak house at 7 don’t be late” your dumbass responded with a thumbs up but really you were shiting your pants
The week has passed it is currently 6:30 your wearing a suit trying to make a good impression although you’re a woman you still enjoy wearing suits it look good on your muscular body once you were about to leave you heard a voice “mama mia, looking hot butter scotch” you turn around to find Kayla and Jake “ky you know I love you and all but never say that” “woahhh she isn’t wrong tho” Jake jumps up and walks up to you “is that the expensive perfume?” you roll your eyes playfully “I’ll be late guys ,have fun love you” and with that you left with both the car and dorm key the place was only 15 minutes away you wanted  to be sure once again you had to make a great impression you reached at 6:50  you decided to wait 10 minute in the car you fixed your hair and scrolled on tumblr for a bit till it reached 1 minute before 7 you got out locked the car took one last deep breath and entered  you looked around before you found him Tim fucking burton “ hey y/n , your right on time and you look perfect”  “thank you ,you look great yourself burton” “burton, I like that” you smiled and he did the same “come here I’ll show you around the table” you followed him as he showed you around the table till you found someone missing “uhh burton, who’s going to be my girlfriend on the show ?” he looked around and then smiled to someone behind you and pointed “speaking of the devil” you turned around to see a gorgeous girl also in what had seem a suit you stood up to great her she “hello i am y/n” “Jenna” she returned back with a smile she sat next to you which made you smile as the room was loud and full of people but yet it was silent between you two “so you’re the lead?” she asked you turned to face her you looked to her eyes and realized how deep it is “yep” was all you could say ,you were to lost in her eyes “I like your suit” your eyes looked her up to down “I like yours to” was all you could think of she then said “but your button is….. umm undone” you look down to find one of your buttons undone you put your hands over your face embraced from the moment then excuse yourself to go to the bathroom I mean yeah you can do it in your seat but you were to embraced to even thank the small girl you go inside one of the bathroom halls fix your shirt and sit there for a moment until “y/n?” it was her Jenna “yeah?” “Are you okay your pants are up?” you exit the hall smiling slightly at the woman “yeah sorry” “you apologies a lot you know that?” you looked at her then mumbled “sorry” she raised her eyebrows at you “ohhh yeahhh bout that” you scratched the back of your neck as she giggled “fixed your shirt?” you look down to check one more time then looked back at her “yep” she then grabbed your hand and said “come on they are waiting on you to order” the rest of the night was nice other than the fact that you were an introvert and people were forced to always be the ones to talk to you but when it came to Jenna things when smooth like you know each other since forever the time had passed fast and before you knew it ,it was currently 3:24 people where leaving and burton came right before you left and said “y/n I will send you the script for the first 3 episode that well film tomorrow learn them well because well start filming in 2 months” you nodded and said your goodbyes to everyone ,and then it left 2 you and the beautiful Jenna Ortega she was quiet very drunk right now everyone was except you , you were always a ‘good girl’ is what Kayla would call it Jenna on the other hand was stumbling all over the place “y/n ,I like you your so n-nice and it’s so cute when your embraced your al- also very very hot you know I’ve never met s-someone like you , please don’t leave me” shit.

Leo Valdez x child of Poseidon pt 2
As Leo was walking back to his cabin still grinning from ear to ear he realized that he was going on a quest that week that he had completely forgotten about
it made him sad that he was leaving tomorrow because he wouldn’t get to see you
he then had an amazing idea
he ran back to your door and knocked on it
you were still in pajamas with your hair being a mess but he didn’t care
” get ready I have something I need to show you”
you were a little surprised but got ready and went with him
he led you to the forest talking about anything and everything on the way
thats how he learned you like f/c (favorite candy), loves f/m (favorite movie), and that you love f/b (favorite band) this would help him for future reference
you walked up to a door. A BIG door
Leo LIT HIS HAND ON FIRE and it opened
“welcome to bunker 9” he said as your mouth hung open
as the doors opened a DRAGON was inside
but it was bronze not a regular dragon
”this is Festus he’s our ride on the quest, I haven’t shown him to anyone yet”
“ so why are you showing him to me?”
“ because we might find Percy on this quest and I wanted to show you that we have a reliable ride”
”thanks it makes me feel a lot better that you you all will be safe even if I barley know you
just then Festus walked up to you and nuzzled your chest
you laughed as Leo said “ he likes you…hey do you want to go for a ride with me?”
you say yes and you both hop on Festus
the feeling of soaring through the sky is amazing
he gets close enough to the water that you can touch it and you do
your sitting in front of Leo and you can feel him behind you
it makes you feel safe
You start to feel a little lightheaded from exhaustion since you haven’t eaten anything and you’ve been a little overwhelmed
suddenly you blackout and the last thing you think is I just fell backwards onto Leo’s chest
leo is freaking out because you just passed out
you land back at bunker 9 and he get you down
hes carrying you bridal style and he walks back to camp like that with you in his arms
hes still freaking out as he takes you to the infermery passing annabeth and piper on the way
they look at each other in surprise as they see what’s going on and from then on they know you guys like eachother
leo walks into the infermery and finds Kayla
“ she passed out I don’t know what to do” he is still freaking out
Kalyan tells him to lay you on a cot while she does an assessment
Leo sits with you the entire time
piper and Annebeth walk in to see what is going on as they’re walking over Kayla say to Leo “ she passed out from exhaustion but it she doesn’t look healthy. I think she’s been starving herself”
Annebeth says “ y/n I knew you were skipping breakfast but I didn’t know it was this bad”
piper turns to Leo and says with a smile “ why were you guys together?”
leos face goes red “ no reason, just hanging out.”
Piper leaves to prepare for the quest
You Wake up about 10 minutes later and immediately Annebeth is looking at you saying “y/n why have you not been eating?”
you look shocked that she found out and hoped that she hadn’t found out other things to
Leo is there to
” I’m just not really hungry anymore”
Leo pipes up “ it’s not healthy to skip meals please promise me you’ll eat more”
”ok”
you walk out of the infermery and Annebeth pulls you to the side
convo goes as follows
“what’s up with you and Leo ”
Blushing “nothing he was just showing me something he found in the woods”
”it sure seems like you like him”
” ok maybe a little but what’s wrong with that”
” there’s nothing wrong with it but I don’t want you getting hurt”
you go back to your cabin and see something else on you door step
you pick it up and realize that it’s a few f/f tied together with a note attached
dear y/n, I hope these make you a little happier because you deserve that. - secret admirer
you smile and walk back into your cabin
Ok I’m gonna have to do a part 3 I’ll post it later

These Strings That Bind Us
first chapter; previous chapter
So this is the first chapter of this fic that I’ve posted since a few of my irl friends have started following me and now they get to see the crazed fanfiction maniac I am and I don’t know if they’re ready.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
chapter 3:
Nico scanned the room he was left in. He knew logically that he was safe. That he was allowed to be… gay. And that the people that just overheard his conversation with Percy likely didn’t hate him for it.
They probably do hate you though. Even you can’t like yourself.
He just… didn’t like that knowledge to be floating around.
It was then, after observing all the sleeping and uninterested patients that he saw the face of a particular blonde peering through a corner.
“Hey. Sunshine. I see you.” Nico said trying to mask his worry.
How long had he been there?
Will exhaled a laugh. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to… stalk…? I was going to check up on you but you were talking with Percy and I did to want to interrupt.”
“How much did you overhear?” Nico asked, deciding to cut to the point.
Will turned pinker. “Nothing! I swear I wasn’t trying to listen into your conversation. I was just watching,” he said getting redder. “I mean-! I wasn’t like ‘watching’ watching. But I was also not listening. I was just waiting for an opening is all. So I could check up on you. Because that’s what I’m here to do right now. Check up on you that is.”
Will snapped his mouth shut, trying to stop the word-vomit from getting worse. He had a flight-or-flight look in his eyes, as if how Nico responded would be the deciding factor in how this interaction went. He wished Will hadn’t stopped. He couldn’t pin down the exact reason why he liked hearing that incoherent mess of speech, but he did. It took a bit longer for him to realize that while he was brain was occupied by the rambling of the boy across from him, it was too full to waste energy on worrying.
Nico tried -really tried- to think of something comforting or cringe-reducing to say but he could help it when a laugh slipped out.
And another. And one more. And five seconds later he was miserably failing to stifle his giggles with his left hand.
“Wha-“ Will started. “What is it? Are you ok?Did one of my siblings but you on laughing gas or something? It was Kayla wasn’t it?!”
This made Nico laugh even harder. “Oh gods no. You’re just really weird. In a good way. You kept on saying more and it made it get worse and worse.” He laughed again. “Thank you for that. Holy hades I needed a good laugh.”
Will didn’t even flinch when Nico described his little speech as pathetic. If anything, it seemed to make him more confident. Composed. “Well I’m glad you feel joy at my expense,” he said rolling his eyes. “And you have a pretty laugh too. I like hearing it.” He smiled at Nico, his gaze moving to the glow between them.
Oh right.
Stop getting comfortable. Especially with him.
Nico shifted in his seat, moving so his arms are crossed with his left ring-finger covered by his arm. He failed to avert his gaze from Will’s disappointed eyes.
See? Even if it weren’t wrong, you could never be with him. You fail everybody, and Will is no different.
A few beats of silence.
“So uh… checkup?” Nico suggested.
“Yes! Right. Let me just…” he trailed off. Something about clipboards and procedures that Nico did not have to energy nor interest to pay attention to.
Will got the information he needed. Apparently a lot of Nico’s story was already in the documents.
“Like I said: I know your history,” Will stated with faux-intimidation. Nico rolled his eyes.
When they got to the physical checkup Nico started getting jittery. He felt awkward saying something to Will about it, but he really didn’t like being touched so much. Especially because Will’s hands were so… methodical. It was bringing him back.
To the times of your torment? Good. Revel in it. In the feeling of pain. Relive it all. Maybe if you look tortured enough somebody will even pity you. Why do you think you want that so badly? You know how hard it is to be yourself. Trying to share that burden with somebody else is plain selfish.
Will noticed. Probably. He didn’t point it out, but he tried to lighten the mood, albeit with terrible references to things Nico did not have the current cultural knowledge to understand.
Something about Nico being “Mr. Perfectly Fine” when asked about he was feeling. Or responding to Nico’s remarks about his werewolf scratches with saying, “oh! ‘Tis but a flesh wound I see!” (He seemed really proud of himself with that one). And he kept calling Nico a “padawan”?  What even was that?
Yet, despite the utter confusion that had overtaken Nico, it was a good distraction. Will had or hadn’t brought a laugh out of him a couple of times. Nico was or was not starting to feel a lot more comfortable, especially with Will around.
And the string they shared absolutely was not glowing more warmly with each passing moment they spent together.  Of course not. Never.
~~~
After that checkup, Nico offered to help around the infirmary. He did this, of course, hoping that his complete lack of any medical knowledge and “aura of death” would be enough for Will to refuse the offer.
He did not.
Figures.
What Will did do however, was introduce anyone and everyone imaginable to Nico. Whether that be random patients, his siblings, his Roman siblings that he (being the social-magnet-golden-retriever that he was) had gotten close with after the war, or some poor soul that happened to be within the vicinity of the two of them. It was weird. Nico didn’t know how to feel. Nobody had treated him like a person they could show others to. He was usually hidden away. Chose to keep himself hidden away.
Nico was starting to like being seen though. It helped that Will was there too. Unlocking the prison of isolation Nico had made for himself and dragging him into interactions when they were in the middle of filing paperwork. When he introduced Nico to a new person, he almost sounded proud. Like knowing Nico was something they could envy about Will.
“Oh hey [person] have you met my friend Nico?” Will would say. “Yeah he’s the coolest kid in camp! Go on Nico say hi,” pride radiating from his voice. “We met a few days ago when he almost stabbed me haha. He really saved my skin out there. Even if he was seconds away from passing out while doing it.”
Nico would never admit it, but he kind of liked the attention Will was giving him. It was as if Will’s words of affirmation were able to fight off the self-doubt demons would otherwise occupy much of Nico’s thoughts.
Not only that, but he also liked meeting people.
Yes. Him. Nico di Angelo. The son of Hades. Well known social recluse. Enjoying the communion of others.
Was that new? He thought he was an introvert to the core. The idea of people was supposed to make him want to hide under a rock a perish. Was it just that he was so much of a social outcast that he fooled himself into thinking that?
Dear gods, he was not going to spend the time going down that rabbit hole any further.
Nico felt a tug on his string finger. Will had started doing that in order to touch Nico without touching him. Nico hadn’t decided yet how he felt about it. Well, his heart obviously had, but he’s choosing to ignore that stubborn organ in all matters pertaining to Will. He looked up, slowly bringing himself back to reality.
Back to the storage/office room they were (as Will had put it) “chillin’” in. Back to the smell of antiseptic spray and old files. Back to the blonde idiot staring into his soul, seemingly trying to solve a puzzle.
“…what?” Nico broke the silence.
Will stared for a beat longer. “You were staring off into space for a while. Are you ok?”
He thought for a moment too long.
“Yes,” was the response Nico decided on.
Will stared even deeper with a curious look. “…ok… sure. What were you thinking about then?”
Nico was just about to bark out a basic response of “oh nothing”, or something like that, but he stopped himself. He didn’t need to hold himself back. Not when Will was looking at him in that eager and open way that he does.
“I was thinking about how much in my life has changed,” since you entered into it, “in the past few days.”
Maybe he didn’t say the whole truth, but Will was enough to make him no outright lie.
“Really?” Will backed off some, face turning from questioning frown to genuine smile. “How so?”
Oh. So this was gonna be some cheesy heart-to-heart, was it? Nico was not opposed to that idea. He looked back up at Will’s bright expectant eyes.
He actually rather liked the idea.
He talked to Will. He was trying to keep it short (Will was always busy) but the more he talked, the more they kept talking. And talking. And talking. Somehow they moved from life the last few days to life in the past few years. Family, in all possible definitions of the word. Friends, in all their shades, hues, and complexities. Enemies, in all their surprising humanity.
Will’s voice changed depending on what he was saying. He slurred together his words when they were talking about old interests. He would pause or stutter when they transitioned to deep topics, and slowed down when they got comfortable there. His voice got all jittery and slightly more high pitched when he was excited about something.
And the way he listened… the way it felt like he hung onto every word Nico said like it was written in scripture…
Nico kept wondering when Will would leave. He would find some excuse about having to check up on a patient, or outright say he didn’t want to stay there.
Wouldn’t want to stay with you. Why would anyone want to spend time with you. You’re boring him and he will leave you—
But Will hasn’t left. How long has they been there? They sat down on a nearby desk a while ago. Will was still with him.
Will, talking about his mom and how much he misses her. Will, listening to Nico’s stories of his childhood in Italy. Will, leaning into the beats of silence that would occasionally fall between them with a rare comfort. Will, inching closer to Nico with each passing second. Will, making their string glow impossibly brighter with the effect he had on Nico. Will, coiling the string around his fingers until there was no space between his and Nico’s hands. Will, cutting himself off mid-sentence just to graze Nico’s hand.
Will. Will. Will.
How long had it been? It was dark outside. Not that Nico cared. In the moment all that Nico cared about was right by his side, chatting animatedly, listening with care, leaning against Nico as he got more tired. Nico couldn’t imagine falling asleep now. His heart was beating so fast one would think he was about to be killed by some monster.
For some reason this moment felt more important than any of those past life-or-death experiences. He was safe. Nobody was in danger. But all those times he was fighting to live. Now he’s living to be alive.
With Will.
He looked over at the boy now resting on his shoulder and smiles. His mouth slightly open and he’s just barely snoring. It’s adorable. Nico’s heart warms with affection.
Affection. He liked using that word in this moment. He smiled.
He liked using that word for Will.
~~~
The Apollo Cabin did not cut him any slack when he brought a sleeping Will back in a bridal carry late into the night.
~~~
“Hey! It’s Mr. Perfectly Fine!” Will exclaimed to his siblings when Nico had entered the infirmary office.
Nico had caught a glimpse of Will hunched over his desk, with an exhausted expression written on his face just as Nico had walked in. It seemed like he was talking to his siblings, Kayla and Austin, about how he can “totally handle all this work” and that he’s “not burnt out”. They however, were willing to drop that conversation to snicker at Nico regarding whatever it was Will had just said.
“Seriously? You have no other jokes,” Nico retorted. “What is that referencing? I’m convinced you’re making it up at this point.”
“Oh please, at this point it’s your fault for not being a part of the Taylor Nation,” Kayla chimed in.
“I’ve been here for two days!”
Kayla crossed her arms. “That’s two whole days of Taylor Swift that you could have been listening to.”
Nico rolled his eyes and looked to Austin, the one person left who hadn’t taken a side against him.
“What?” He responded. “They’re right. All the effort you’ve made to avoid Taylor Swift is really some Kanye behavior.”
Nico hated his past self. Why did he decide to start hanging out with the Apollo Cabin? They were one mess of snarky comebacks joined together by their obsession over various musicians.
“I’ve been helping out! Would you really rather have me be wasting oxygen while listening to Swift?” Nico asked the cohesive mass.
“Yes!” They all shouted in (a partially harmonized) unison.
Nico groaned and sat on the chair he had placed next to Will’s desk the last time he was in this office. He’s only been here for three days and yet he has a spot for him. Next to Will.
The siblings talked about some infirmary stuff. Work schedules, post-war stuff, some new Roman ailments they learned about. Nico tuned it out, picking at his hangnails.
Some time later, the door Nico had just come through slammed open with an uninterested Drew Tanaka on the other end.
“Hey shitheads! I need drugs!” She said.
Nico raised an eyebrow at her and turned to look at Will, hoping he would translate.
Without looking up from his desk, Will rolled his eyes and said, “Sweet baby Zeus, can’t you just say ibuprofen like a normal person?”
He pushed back on his chair to get up, but Kayla pushed him right back.
“Nuh-uh. I’ve got this. You stay here and take a break with your,” she looked at Nico, “dude-best-friend.” She winked at him.
She headed out the door, with Drew on her heels.
The three left in the room looked at each other. A silent conversation played out between Will and Austin that lasted for much longer than a silent conversation has any right to last. Nico was glad to not be involved in it, whatever it was.
Austin sighed. “I guess I’ll go with them to make sure they don’t blow anything up.”
“Again,” Will added.
With a quick finger-gun-snap to his brother, Austin left.
The door creaked it as it closed.
“Wait,” Nico put his elbows on the desk. “How many explosions have they caused?” He thought for a second. “How do they even cause explosions to happen?”
He waits for a second more. Will is writing something down. Nico probably shouldn’t have interrupted by talking. He needed to be more conscious about his actions. Especially now that he is friends with Will. What was it Kayla said? “Dude-best-friend”? Yeah. He needed to be a better dude-best-friend. Not that they were “best friends”. It was probably just some slang or something. If they were even considered to be best-
Thunk.
Will face-planted onto his desk.
“Shit.” How long had he been working? “Are you ok?”
Will held up a hand to give a thumbs-up before dropping it back down to his desk. Will started snoring.
Nico knew there was a right way to react to this. Will probably had the answer for him. But Nico couldn’t find it in himself to do anything but stare. Stare and think. Like he was moving in slow motion but the rest of the world wasn’t kind enough to take note.
Was this normal for Will? Did he just collapse at his desk from time to time? No. He was always preaching his gospel of “taking care of yourself” and whatnot. This had to be a one-off thing.
He’s probably fine, right? Sure, he’s probably a little bit burnt out, but it’s not life and death or anything.
Yeah good idea. Bury your problems. Maybe one day you’ll share a grave with them.
How could he even think like that? “Not life and death,” so many things are not life and death but they are still worth worrying about.
Nico is a terrible friend. He needs to be worrying more about Will. Will needs help.
And how the hell do you expect to help him? Name one time you weren’t a burden to somebody. Every time you try to do something it fails. Just stop.
Gods. He was pathetic. His friend was passed out in front of him, and he was standing there, frozen. He should do something. He needed to do something. He just. He- he had to-
You always let people down. You’re too pitiful to help anyone.
No! He could help!
Will laid there fully unaware of the warfare happening in Nico’s mind. Someone looking in would likely find his state of rest to look peaceful. He was just a tired kid doctor in a tiny room filled with papers and files.
Outside that room was a couple of teenagers bickering about ibuprofen and explosives. It was a conversation severely lacking in context for the onlookers not in said conversation.
Even further beyond there were children doing dangerous and mundane activities. Somewhere a kid first encountered a monster. A man proposed to his girlfriend to the joy of an entire restaurant. A man proposed to his boyfriend to the shock, disgust, and joy of a small park. A child wrote a letter that never got read to her father fighting in a war. A species that was never discovered went extinct. A group of teenagers got high on the roof of a parking lot. A tired mother decided to quit smoking for the third time that year. A grandparent met their first grandson.
And back in that small room with too much paper and a sleeping boy, a damaged kid sees nothing but the worst of it.
Nico’s mind is a tunnel with no light at the end; flashing horrors crowding it out and letting no logic or hope in.
This was life-or-death. If Nico didn’t do something, he would be responsible for whatever happened to Will.
Will would know what to do. If Nico just knew Will better. If he just payed a bit more attention while Will worked. He must have been a terrible friend, having not cared enough to know how to handle this.
Finally, something you’re right about.
Gods! How could he even be drowning in this self pity now? Will needed help. He needed… caffeine? An intervention? He needed something and Nico needed to help. He could help. He needed to help. He needed-
His hand met a warmth. He looked down to see his and Will’s hands touching. Nico didn’t know when he started reaching for his hand. He let it sit there for a few beats of tense, heavy, warm silence.
His fingers moved without his consent to gently coil their string.
People say that, for soulmates, strings are able to pass emotions. The way one touches their string and the feeling they have while holding it are felt by the person on the other side.
Nico could… send some comfort? The thoughts would have made him laugh in any other circumstance. Him. Being the bringer of comfort. But in this instance, he could. There wasn’t anything else he coulddo.
No you cannot. You will lead yourself to heartbreak.
Will groaned. Nico flinched.
His hand twitched to reach out. To let Will know that “I’m here”. That “you can talk to me”.
You can’t do that.
He couldn’t do that though.
You don’t know how to comfort people.
He didn’t even know how to comfort people.
Just look in front of you, you let this happen under your watch.
He’d let this happen.
And here you are thinking to yourself instead of doing anything.
Gods! He just needed to focus. Think of some solution.
Just think! Just think! Just think! Just-
A door opened and Nico’s throat dropped, feeling like he had been caught doing something he shouldn’t have done. Which was stupid. He knew that.
He uselessly held his hands up and backed up, turning to the door. His body was frozen as thoughts of the thousands of ways the next few seconds could go all competed for his attention. He was a deer in the headlights, weakly looking past the person who was on the other end of the door. They looked at the scene in the room and raised an eyebrow.
“Nico? What happened?” Austin asked.
Austin! Thank the gods! He can-
“Help.” Nico creaked. “I don’t know what happened. Will, he…” Nico cut himself off. His throat was so choked up it was barely letting him say anything. It hurt. He didn’t realize he was this close to tears.
Fucking baby.
Austin rushed to his brother’s side and after a few moments sighed a breath of relief. “He’s fine. Just exhausted.” He took a few moments to give Nico a worried look. “Are you fine?”
Nico couldn’t respond. His body was still in fight-or-flight mode. He could only hear the pounding of his heartbeat, so strong it was like it was coming directly from his ears. There was to much happening. He just needed to calm down. He also had to respond. He had to look normal. He had to help with-
“Everything is fine.” The mantra he repeated in his mind. “He’s just exhausted. He’s ok. I’m ok.”
No you’re not. No he’s not.
Austin just confirmed that there was nothing to worry about.
You just don’t care enough about Will to keep worrying for him.
“I’m ok,” he finally responded, voice even more shaky.
Austin made a doubtful look and walked over to a shelf, pulling out some ball. He handed it to Nico, placing it in a hand he had not realized was shaking until then. He squeezed it and it was cushiony, but firm.
“Breathe with me,” Austin said simply.
And they breathed together. Slowly in.  Holding it. Slowly out. Holding it.
After a minute or so he asked “would you mind if I brought Kayla here too?”
Shrugging, Nico lied. “I don’t mind. I’m fine really.” Although he didn’t know why he was still trying.
“No, you’re not.”
Austin steps out of the room and sticks his head out the door, peering down the corridor. “Kayla!”
Nico heard a muffled, “What?! I’m busy!”
Again shouting back, “Just come over here please!”
Some shuffling. Some footsteps. “What’s up?”
Austin stepped aside and let her view the scene. Her eyes softened and she walked over towards where Nico stayed standing.
“Oh Gods Nico, what’s wrong?” She asked him.
He tried for a dry laugh. “Nononono I’m fine. I was just a little-“ he choked. He hopelessly tried to steady his voice. “Just a little worried for Will is all.”
Kayla’s eyes immediately went wide with panic at the mention of his brother’s name. “What happened? Is he ok?” She looked over to his desk.
Austin stepped up to his sister, putting a hand on her arm. “He’s alright Kay. Just a little exhausted,” he said. They looked like they were having a silent conversation for a moment after that ended when they both looked back at Nico.
“Do you want to sit and talk for a bit?” Austin eventually asked.
“It doesn’t have to be about anything important,” Kayla added. “Or anything at all. Like, if you need silence with company we got you. Or silence without company. Or company without silence. Or any other combination. Or some other secret option. Or-“
“Company without silence is just the first choice you said,” Austin interrupted
Kayla thought for a second. “It is, isn’t it? It feels like there should be more combinations of those words though.”
“No company with no silence.”
“Ok but does that actually make any sense? Unless you talk to yourself professionally you wouldn’t be alone and without silence.”
“I would say that I can be alone without silence. I’m an interesting guy, I have fun talking to myself.”
“Yeah well, you’re just lonely so-“
A laugh escaped from Nico. They both looked at him.
“Sorry,” he said, for once with a steady voice. “The way you guys talk to each other is really funny to watch.” It reminded him of how he was with Bianca when they were younger. They used to argue all the time, sometimes escalating into screaming matches. Their mother would always step in and say something wise and meaningful that completely went over Nico and his sister’s heads. If Bianca were both alive now, would it be like this? Would their arguments not be out of malice but sibling love? What would that have looked like with them?
Kayla rested an arm on her brother’s shoulder as he looked at her with fake disgust. “We are, aren’t we?” She asked him.
“I really don’t think you’re ‘funny’. If anything funny looking.”
Kayla walked over to a circular table and sat down. “Oh please. I’m the hottest sibling. No contest.”
Austin followed her, taking a seat for himself. “If that’s what you want to believe, I will let you continue living with that lie.”
Kayla scoffed and looked back at Nico. “Wanna join the order of the round table?”
Yes.
“I uh… Are you sure it won’t get in the way of,” he waved his hand around at the general vicinity, “infirmary duties?”
“Not really,” Austin answers. “We did rounds this morning and everybody just needs more time to heal with the meds and magic,” which he embellished with spirit fingers, “and we already gave them their afternoon doses. Unless there’s some random emergency-“
“Or Drew comes back demanding drugs again,” Kayla added.
“Or that, then we’re just chilling.”
Nico wanted to say yes.
Don’t fool yourself kid. They don’t want you there. You’re just being a burden. They seem to be having a great time without-
Nico squeezed the ball. He moved to the table. He smiled and they smiled back.

Word count: 2.6K
AN: This is the last part of chapter 1, next chapter will be about Kayla and her adventure with the pogues! ~
(Cameron Estate)
After I got ready at Nina’s house, she kindly drove me to the party. As we parked in front of the giant villa she shrieked at me and shaked my body from excitement.
“Oh my god, you're going to a freaking Cameron party!?”, she squealed.
I sighed and looked at her seriously “Don't tell anyone about that ok?”.
“Your secret is safe with me”, she cheered.
Getting out of the car I watched her drive away. As I took in the view in front of me I gulped.
I'm really doing this, I thought to myself. The night was a little too chilly for the dress I was wearing, so I pulled my cardigan tighter, shivering.
I walked up the long driveway, noticing the crazy amount of people who were everywhere. As I watched some girls, already totally wrecked, hitting on some guys.
I got snapped out of my observation by Kelce shouting at me. “Eeey it's you!”, he cheered. Walking towards me, you could see that he was also pretty drunk.
“Yeah I made it”, I nervously chuckled. Kelce noticed my eyes scanning the crowd and grinned.
“Yoo Rafe, your girl is here!”. My face flushed red at the sudden nickname. He threw an arm around my shoulders laughing.
But before Kelce could make me even more uncomfortable, I saw Rafe making his way through the crowd inside the house and joining us at the front.
Kelce made a gesture, presenting me like a gift to Rafe. But Rafe only sighed and pushed Kelce back inside.
“I think you had enough, bro”, he grumbled and turned back to me again. “Sorry, he is annoying when he gets drunk”, Rafe apologised, smiling at me and pushing some hair out of his face.
I grinned at him, being relieved that he was here now. One second longer with Kelce made me want to bounce in an instance. “Some people can't control their liquor”, I laughed.
He let his gaze drift over me before continuing. “I'm glad you made it, you.. look stunning”, Rafe smirked, looking into my eyes. I felt my heart beating faster and my cheeks heating up again.
He really was making me nervous. “Thanks”, I stammered, I couldn't get myself to say more.
Rafe carefully laid his hand on my back and smiled. “Let's get you a drink”. I smiled back at him, noticing the warmth of his hand on my back.
“That would be nice”, I added ushering the butterflies in my stomach.
He guided me through the house, in the back where a giant pool was located. I felt people staring at me the whole time until we arrived at the small bar. Rafe gestured to me to sit down.
“What do you want?”, he asked me, leaning against the bar top not losing eye contact with me. I was a little abashed by his piercing gaze, but did my best to act casual.
“Maybe a gin tonic?”, I answered, resting my head on my hand and looking him back into his eyes. He looked slightly surprised by my action but was soon to grin back at me.
“One gin tonic and whiskey on ice”, he ordered to the barkeeper. As our drinks were ready he swiftly looked around.
“You want to go upstairs? It's a little more quiet there”, Rafe suggested. For a second I considered the fact that I actually didn't know him too well, nor anyone who was attending this party.
He must've noticed my uncertainty so he quickly added “Just if you like.. the terrace is pretty chill tho”. I looked at him as he took a sip of his drink.
At this point in my life I had kind of good skills reading people. I wasn't right every single time but at least nearly. I just felt that he wouldn't have bad intentions towards me. So I agreed and we made our way up.
It was in fact really nice up here and a lot more quiet. Just a few people were around, Kelce and Topper being one of them. As soon as they saw Rafe with me they asked us to join them.
Rafe looked at me apologetically, but I assured him it was alright. Further through the night I noted that Topper and Kelce were pretty nice. If you ignored the Kook-outburst from time to time, bragging about some high end gadgets.
Some time and drinks later, Kelce disappeared for a few minutes and came back with a grin on his face. “Got some”, he pulled out a small bag with some white powder in it.
Rafe must've noticed me staring at it a little so he softly put his hand on my arm. “You're alright.. with this?”, he leaned over to look me in the face.
It didn't look at it like that because I was weirded out or something. It was because I thought that I had my shit together.
But seeing the bag was enough to give me a feeling that my nose was burning. “Yeah of course, it's your stuff”, I blurted out laughing, feeling a bit dumb for staring.
“I knew you were cool”, Kelce grinned at me, putting out some lines. Rafe gazed at me with his stunning face.
As Kelce put out some for everyone he asked “You wanna try or?”. Topper smiled at me.
“You don't need to if you don't want to”, he assured me. Looking at the coke laid out in front of us I gulped. Without second thought I told myself, screw it.
“Sure it's been a while though”, I said, pressing my lips together. Rafe grinned and peered at me a little surprised. “You did coke before?”, he asked.
A little flustered I put a strain of hair behind my ear. “Yeah.. I know this guy.. Barry”, I said shrugging, taking the bill which was formed into a small tube out of Kelce’s hands. I wasn't proud that I knew this psycho, but he had the best stuff in town.
“Wait, you know Barry?”, Rafe laughed and shaked his head. He didn't seemed to bumped about it. Watching me putting the tube up to my nose.
“Who doesn't”, Kelce added snickering.
Snorting the powder up my nose a burning sensation made itself present. I should've been pissed at myself but really I wasn't.
Looking at my drink I noticed it being empty. I glanced at Rafe who had some liquor left in his glass.
“May I take a sip from your drink?”, I asked without thinking too much and started giggling. Rafe smiled at me, handing me his drink.
“Sure Blondie”, he cooed and suddenly I needed to focus on drinking or I might have spilled some.
Soon I felt the effect of the drug, being highly confident of myself and also doped up.
This led to me drinking a lot more than I intended to. A little while later Topper and Kelce were about to leave. Because Kelce wanted to hook up with some girls, but Topper insisted on seeing Rafe’s sister Sarah.
“She texted me that she was down at the beach with some of her friends”, Topper explained, while Kelce snorted.
“You totally whipped dude”.
Topper lightly shoved him and laughed “At least I have a girlfriend”.
As the two left, I noticed Rafe and I were the only ones left at the terrace. This place was so extravagant, I never was at a house this big.
I stood up leaning on the railing, taking in the view. Turning around I looked at Rafe and said “You have a sister?”.
He slightly frowned at the thought and snickered “Two actually, both younger than me”.
“Geez, must be annoying”, I chuckled, but quickly stopped because I didn't know the relationship he had with them.
“Sorry.. I”, I started but Rafe was quick to usher me.
“No really it is pretty annoying”, he laughed, joining me at the railing. I felt a tingling in my stomach and smiled to myself. Turning around again I got the urge to sit on the railing, so I pushed myself up and sat down on it.
Rafe watched me doing so and reflexively put out his hands. “Whoa you might want to be careful there”, he chuckled while holding my arm.
I blushed a little at his action and grinned. “I'm alright, not the type to lose balance”, but at the time I said that I wobbled a little, scaring the shit out of me.
Only then I noticed I was holding on to Rafe in front of me. He broadly smiled at me and carefully put his arms around my back for support.
“I don't want a cutie to fall down my ledge”, he laughed gazing at me. Did he just call me cute? My cheeks felt burning hot right now.
A little flustered, I looked down and bit my lip. Only when I looked back up at Rafe I noticed how close we actually were.
He glanced at my lips and heat was radiating through my whole body.
The urge to kiss his lips was too irresistible.
We both leaned in, inches away from each other. I could practically feel his breath on my lips. He smelled like whiskey and cologne.
As his lips were about to settle on mine, we were broken apart from a loud noise inside the house and angry shouting. Rafe turned his head around alarmed.
“What is going on?”, I asked. A little uneasy I glided down from the ledge while Rafe made sure I landed safely on the ground. He walked over to the glass door, getting a better look of the situation.
“Fuck.. it's my Dad”, he panicked and ran his hands wildly through his hair. My eyes widened, this couldn't be good. Ward Cameron could be really intimidating at times.
“Stay here, okay?”, he ordered me and I nervously shaked my head. Rafe went inside and I heard his Dad approaching. It didn't take long for them to fight with each other on a volume which made goosebumps creep up on my back.
I couldn't understand the whole conversation they had so I silently went to stand beside the glass door. “How many times I have to tell you that I don't want such people on my property!?”, Ward yelled at his son.
“I know, I know I… I’m sorry dad! “, I heard rafe declare to him. From the glimpse of my eye I glanced at the coffee table we sat around before and spotted the bag of coke.
Fuck not good not good, I thought to myself.
Cautiously I sneaked over to the table, fumbling around the table to grab the bag. “Everyone needs to leave now!”, Ward yelled.
As I was about to grab the bag his eyes crossed mine. “You too!”, he exclaimed and started to walk into my direction. Rafe tried to calm him down, following hastily.
I quickly shoved the bag into the sleeve of my cardigan. Frightened I looked Ward Cameron into the eyes as he stood now in front of me.
But before anything could happen, Rafe pushed himself in between the two of us. “I take her down, no problem”, he quickly said, glancing nervously at his dad who was watching me with a piercing glare.
“Fine”, Ward finally said, after what felt like an eternity. Rafe took my hand and hastily went downstairs with me. I gulped, that was so fucking close.
As Rafe brought me outside he let out a deep sigh. “I'm so sorry Sky… I didn't want you to see that”, he stuttered, looking at me embarrassed.
I noticed that he still didn't let go of my hand, which made my heart only race more. “It's alright Rafe, I fight with my Dad all the time”, I assured him.
Smiling softly at him, I gave his hand a light squeeze. His hands felt warm and gave me a feeling of protection.
His features softened as he looked at me and carefully tucked a loose hair strain behind my ear.
“I really want to give you a ride home.. but I need to take care of this right now”, he sighed, looking back at the entrance door.
I didn't know he could be this sweet, it made my heart melt. “It's okay I'll give my friend a call”, I said.
He watched me with a concerned look on his face. “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure”, I answered. I really didn't want to go right now, but I hoped that this wasn't the last time. “I'll text you when I get home?”, I asked, a little shy.
Rafe grinned at me “You better be doing that cutie”.
I laughed at his statement, wishing this night would never end.
Hearing Ward screaming from inside, Rafe quickly added “I need to go now.. sorry”.
Without thinking twice I leaned forward, standing on my tiptoes and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
Rafe didn't expect that and grinned to himself. “See you Blondie”, he cooed as we let go of each other's hands and he started to walk back inside.
“See you”, I smiled and made my way down the driveway. Calling Nina, she picked me up and we returned to her place.
The day after was kind of rubbish. I still felt the coming down of the coke from yesterday and wished I didn't do what I did.
(home is where you are)
As Nina brought me back home I couldn't overhear my dad's loud screaming and wasn't sure if I should just turn around and leave.
But I didn't.
I opened the front door entering our messy living room and sighed.
There were laying empty liquor bottles everywhere and the smell of cold cigarette smoke made me sick to my stomach.
I carefully made my way to the back porch, watching my dad yell at my brother for whatever reason. “I'm done with your scum ass”, he growled at JJ.
My brother noticed me standing in the doorframe and gestured for me to not interfere.
Roughly flushing down some beer, my dad took another step forward and hit my brother in the face. JJ tumbled to the side holding his face.
I just stood there, scared and started crying silently. I didn't know what to do, fear holding me in my place and making my whole body go stiff.
JJ glanced at me with his soft eyes, I knew that look. The look of don't come near, it's not safe. As soon as my dad took off, I ran to JJ hugging him tight.
We stayed like this for what felt like hours. Pulling back I softly stroked his cheek where he was hit before. “What was it this time”, I asked in a hushed voice, tears running down my face.
My brother took my hand which was resting on his face and pressed it slightly. “About… about you”, he whispered, looking at me with pain in his eyes.
I gulped and tried not to break out in agony again. I hugged him tightly and cried into his shoulder. “Shh it's ok”, he ushered me, stroking my head softly.
“A letter came from the university”, he explained. I leaned back, looking at him in surprise. JJ smiled softly, guiding me back inside the living room.
I dried of my tear stained face with my arm and watched my brother shuffle through the mail on the coffee table. He took out a little scrunched up letter and handed it to me.
“Dad opened it.. and was pissed off”, he murmured, pressing his lips together. Taking the letter from him, I got nervous.
I pulled out the letter and flattened it a little so I could read it. For the first time in like forever, I felt relieved and scared at the same time.
Clasping a hand over my mouth I started crying again. “I.. got accepted”, I stuttered, looking at my brother completely baffled.
He went over to me and hugged me. “Congrats sis”, he chuckled.
At that time I didn't knew that my whole world was about to change ~

Book:                   Open Heart (Post Series)
Pairing:                Tobias x Casey Carrick (F!MC), The Carrick Girls
Rating:                 General
Category:            Domestic Fluff
Summary:   It's "Bring Your Child to Work Day," and Sammy has some preconceived ideas about how it will go, but at the end of the day, she's in for some sweet surprises.
Words: 1,363
A/N: Just a little fic I threw together for Day 6 of @tobias-carrick-appreciation-week - Dr. Tobias Carrick. Also participating in @aprilchallenge - Family
Tumblr media
It was just after 8 A.M., one of the most chaotic times of day in the Carrick household. Casey eyed the clock nervously as she put a few last items in Kayla's diaper bag and a sandwich in Brooke's lunchbox. At least, that was her intention. Luckily, she realized a sandwich was wedged between Kayla's diapers and made the switch. One frantic lunchtime call was avoided! She took a that was a win.
"Tobias, are you bringing Kayla to your Mom's?"
He jogged down the stairs with his youngest on his hip. "Sure am," he said, kissing Casey's cheek.
Casey motioned toward the front door, where Samantha stood in wait. She was more dressed up than she would typically be for a day at school. With her sweater buttoned and notebook perched under her arm, she was ready to make a beeline to the car.
"Sweetheart," Tobias said as he crouched to re-button her sweater. "Looks like you were off by one button," he smiled. "You’re anxious to get out of here today! You’re really looking forward to going to work with Mommy and Daddy!”
She turned to him with a look that said, ‘we’ve been through this before.’ “Daddy, I’m going to work with Mommy.”
“Sweetie, you know we work at the same place, right?”
“Yes, but I’m going to follow Mommy.”
“We do the same job, pumpkin.”
“Yeah, but Mommy is more serious than you!”
Casey could barely contain her laughter as she grabbed the keys and began loading the family into their SUV.
“You know, Daddy is serious at work, too, Sammy,” Casey informed.
“You should have picked Uncle Bryce,” Brook interrupted. “He’s a surgeon. That’s so much cooler.”
“They wouldn’t let a nine-year-old watch surgery! DUH!” Sammy admonished.
“Sammy!” Tobias said sternly. “Be nice to your sister.”
“I’m sorry,” Samantha acquiesced.
Tobias shot Casey an exasperated look.
“You wanted six more of them,” she chuckled.
“I never claimed to be the smart one in this marriage.”
“And that’s why I’m following Mommy!” Sammy hollered.
~~~~~
Samantha wrote some notes in her notebook as Casey washed her hands.
“Now, what can you say about that visit?” she asked.
“I’m going to tell them you helped a little girl with a sore throat. And you told her mom not to feel guilty because kids always get sick.”
“That’s right! But don’t forget, you helped out. You told her I’m a doctor, and even you get sick.”
“We made her feel better!”
“Yep. That’s part of being a doctor too, sweetie. Sometimes people need reassurance.”
“Being a doctor means doing lots of different things,” Samantha nodded.
“Being a good doctor means doing many different things,” Tobias smiled as he entered the room. “And you’re Mommy isn’t a good doctor; she’s the best.”
“Aww,” Casey grinned. “And you’re the best, too.”
“Is he really, though?” Sammy asked with a judgemental tone. Casey howled with laughter as Tobias glared.
“I mean it… she has to spend less time with my mother,” Tobias deadpanned.
“Sammy, your Daddy is one of the best doctors I’ve ever known. When we met, I was a new doctor and learned so much from him.”
“You did?” her daughter asked with genuine surprise.
“I did. And that’s why you should go with Daddy for a bit. If his patients are OK with it, that is.”
“I have Mrs. Pearson and then Johnny Rivera. I can’t see either saying no to this little beauty.”
“Then it’s set.”
~~~~~
An elderly woman was waiting in the exam room when Tobias and Samantha walked in.
“Mrs. Pearson!” Tobias beamed. “What did I do to get so lucky to see you today?”
The old woman’s face lit up as she greeted Tobias, and she was just as enthusiastic about meeting Samantha.
“Sammy is here for bring your child to work day. Thank you for letting her sit in for part of our visit.”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Mrs. Pearson smiled. “She’s lovely, and how could I say no to the doctor who saved me.”
“My Daddy saved you?”
“He did. I was having a lot of pain, but most doctors didn’t listen to me; they thought I was exaggerating. But your Daddy got to know me and really listened. He found what was wrong, and it saved my life.”
“Ah, I was just doing my job,” Tobias grinned.
“No, you were doing a good job, Daddy!”
“That’s right!” Mrs. Pearson agreed.
When the visit ended, Sammy had learned about the patient’s illness;  but she also knew her daughter was visiting from New York and that Mrs. Pearson makes delicious banana bread, and whenever she did, she made sure to stop by to give Tobias some.
“Daddy, I liked her.”
“I do, too, pumpkin.”
“She feels like a friend, not just a patient.”
“Well… in a way, she is. She was very lonely when we met, and we did our best to make her feel welcome here, but she needed more. So we told her about the community center’s game night, and now she goes all the time. She’s made lots of friends, and she’s much happier.”
“Maybe we can go with her one day?”
“I think that’s a great idea,” he smiled.
The next patient, Johnny Rivera, was a college student who sometimes got homesick. He was polite but shy, and they agreed that Sammy would only stay for the beginning of his visit. She noticed that her Dad acted very differently with Johnny. He told weird jokes and talked about music. He even sent Johnny a playlist, and when Johnny left, he told Sammy she had a cool dad, and she almost agreed.
~~~~~
After dinner that night, Casey finished the dishes while Tobias got their youngest two off to bed. Sammy was finishing her assignment at the kitchen table.
“Do you need any help with that, honey?” Casey asked.
“No, Mommy. I’m almost done.”
“Good! Because I have a special treat for you.”
Sammy’s eyes widened. “A special treat?”
Casey produced a chocolate cupcake as her little girl clapped.
“That’s for being so good today.”
They heard slippers shuffling on the floor, then Tobias chimed in. “Are you bribing our daughter so she’ll say nice things about you?”
“Daddy!” Samantha giggled. “I already said nice things about Mommy.”
“Just Mommy?” Tobias asked with mock horror. “What do I have to do? Get you a puppy?”
“I said nice things about you too, Daddy!”
“Well, thank God,” he laughed.
“I wrote about how Mommy tries to make people feel better. She’s very smart, but nice too. She makes people feel good.”
“Awww.  Thank you, pumpkin!”
“And I told them Daddy is different with every patient.”
“How so?” Casey asked.
“Like he knew Mrs. Pearson needed help because she was lonely. Then when Johnny came in, he talked to him about music and jokes. He acted different but still made Johnny happy, even though he was sick.”
“Well, each patient has different needs, sweetheart. Just like sometimes, you and your sisters have different needs. If I want to help my patients, I have to understand them.”
“Daddy is very good at that,” a beaming Casey replied.
“But not all doctors are like that.”
“No, they’re not,” Casey replied. “but hopefully, more are trying to be.”
“Then that makes you special, Daddy.”
“It does make me special, doesn’t it?” He enthused as Casey rolled her eyes. “So special, in fact… don’t you think I should get half of that cupcake?”
“Daddy!” Sammy reprimanded. “You have to know people’s needs! And, right now, I need the whole cupcake.”
Casey chuckled as she opened a box and handed Tobias a cupcake.
“For me?”
“Yes. I can anticipate needs, too, at least when it comes to you.”
Tobias smiled salaciously and whispered in his wife’s ear. “Hey, not in front of the child.”
And with that, they whisked Samantha off to bed.
Hello lovely,
I would like to request an imagine with Jimmy. Something similar to that one scene in the first episode in the restaurant but before the smutty part comes they are somewhere on the balcony with a glass of wine and talking about constellations and watching the Perseids. And after some time spent together on the balcony they end up in his house in bed where he makes sure to take care of her 😽. Thanks!
PS.Make it as smutty as you wish
Tumblr media
Note: Hi lovely, thank you so much for your request. I want to apologize for this taking so long. Truth be told, I had a hard time with the smut so I added only a little bit but I can assure you that there is some juicy Jimmy Keene smut to come so please know that I'm not jipping you, I just had a hard time coming up with good smut.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this imagine and if you have any questions, comment or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Chewing her lip nervously, y/n had no idea why she’d even agreed to go on a date with her sister’s former high school crush and big shot, Jimmy Keene. She had always viewed him as cocky, big headed and extremely egotistical. It made her stomach churn if she was being completely honest.
When she had run into him at some sort of gathering her ‘friend’ Samantha was hosting and he approached her with that stupid smug smirk on his face, she knew he wanted something. It was the same look he had given her when he begged her to do his homework for him so he could go off and bang Courtney and her band of blonde headed goobers.
She so badly wanted to roll her eyes and turn in the other direction but when Samantha walked up to them and practically agreed for her and then walked off as though she was wanting to play matchmaker, y/n gave Jimmy the biggest unenthusiastic smile she could muster and if he was being honest, her unenthusiasm did something to stir his insides. He liked her and knew he had to have her.
Unfortunately for her, y/n was a people pleaser and even though she had a deep-rooted grudge against the man in front of her, she confirmed Samantha’s words and earned herself a sleezy wink and cringy hand on the arm. Yup, she needed a hot shower where she could scrub the gross feeling away.
She didn’t stay at the gathering much longer. She could constantly feel Jimmy’s eyes scanning her body and she had to get out of there if she wanted to stop feeling like someone’s next meal.
Yuck!
Flashing forward a few days, y/n was standing in front of her full-length mirror regretting her choice for asking her co-worker Mandy for help on what to wear. The little black dress she wore seemed to hug her in places she didn’t think were possible. She felt a little too over dressed and that made her go back to the reason she really hated James Keene.
*FLASHBACK*
It was the week before prom and so far, no one had asked y/n or her twin sister Kayla to attend the event with them and normally that would bug them, but they had made a pact this year that if no one asked, they would go together and have the best time they could.
However, just two days before the said event, one of Jimmy’s teammates, Devon walked up to the pair whilst they were at their lockers getting ready for their next class. He had a plan that was sure to earn he and his friends the biggest laugh.
“Ladies.” Devon said, leaning against the locker next to y/n’s.
“Can we help you?” Y/n asked sassily. She knew plain and well who Devon was and of his  grotesque reputation.
“Easy little lady. I just  wanna talk to your friend.” Devon said making goo-goo eyes at her sister. Y/n tried to hold her breakfast down at how nauseating this kid was being.
Y/n looked to Kayla as if to check she was ok with it. Kayla nodded and gave y/n the go ahead to walk to class.
“I’ll see you in a minute.” Y/n said to Kayla but pointing her intense gaze at Devon in warning. She didn’t trust him in the slightest.
*END OF FLASHBACK*
Y/n was pulled from her thoughts when a knock sounded from her front door. She shook out her disgust and collected her things as she just wanted to get this date done with and because she didn’t want that man entering her apartment.
“Shall we go?” Y/n asked as she opened the door but to her surprise, when she looked up, she saw her sister standing there.
“Go where?” Kayla said with a teasing tone.
“Uh, n-nowhere.” Y/n stuttered. This could not have been worse timing.
“Uh ha. Well it’s good to see you too.” Kayla said as she let herself in.
“Kay, I love you, I really do but you gotta go.” Y/n said.
“But I just got here.” Kayla whined in protest as y/n shut the door and followed her to the kitchen.
“I know and we can catch up next week. You gotta-“ Y/n started before another knock on the door echoed through the apartment.
“Oh, I see, you have a hot date. I guess that would explain the slinky black dress.” Kayla chuckled. Y/n panicked.
She knew her sister hated James Keene more because of how he stood her up at the prom all those years ago.
“Please just stay here.” Y/n begged, hoping Kayla would listen but as per usual, the younger twin didn’t.
“Y/n, stop being so weird. I’ll answer the door, you get your things.” Kayla offered. She really was a sweet soul and y/n knew that if she saw Jimmy, she’d probably murder him.
“Kayla, don’t open that door.” Y/n called as she rushed to stop her sister, but it was too late.
“What the fuck do you want. She has a date and your interrupting.” Kayla snapped as she recognized Jimmy immediately. Kayla could feel her blood boil. How could he dare to show his face at a time like this.
“Kayla, he is my date.” Y/n said as calmly as she could knowing her sister was about to fly off the handle.
“That pig is your date!” Kayla all but squealed. Y/n simply nodded.
“Now that she knows, can I come in?” Jimmy asked.
Both women turned and glared at him.
“No. Just give me a minute. I’ll be right out.” Y/n said. Jimmy nodded and held his hands up as he walked away from the door to give them space to talk.
“How could you not tell me.” Kayla seethed.
“Kayla, how could I? You and Tom have been traveling god knows where and you landed on my doorstep without notice and besides, I didn’t want to go on this date in the first place, but Samantha agreed on my behalf, and you know how much of a bitch she can be when people don’t give into her matchmaking shit.” Y/n explained, not aware that Jimmy had heard her words.
“You had every opportunity to tell me when I walked in.” Kayla responded. Y/n knew that she had a point but, in all fairness, she thought that her sister was Jimmy.
“Kayla, can we please put a pin in this and talk about this later. I just want this date to be over and the sooner I can leave, the sooner I can come home.” Y/n begged. Kayla wasn’t happy about it but agreed reluctantly.
Yep, Jimmy heard that too and to say that his ego wasn’t bruised would be a lie.
=
The date with Jimmy hadn’t been going that bad. They had had a nice dinner and surprisingly, y/n really enjoyed hearing his stories and getting to know the real him but a part of her wondered why he was painting himself as this good kid when in fact she knew what he had gotten himself into and knew that his reputation around Chicago wasn’t exactly the greatest.
Sipping her wine and leaning over the railing of his balcony to watch the stars dance across the night sky, she took a deep breath and felt herself relax even though Jimmy was standing so close to her.
“Y/n, can I ask you something?” He asked as the perseids started. Y/n was amazed by their beauty and magic and smiled.
“Sure.” She answered, curious as to what else he could want to know. She had already told him things she never thought she would.
“If you didn’t want to go out with me, why did you decide to?” He questioned.
Y/n sighed. If she was being honest, she didn’t know why.
“You heard that?” She questioned in reply, attempting to dodge the question. Jimmy glanced at her and nodded.
“Look Jimmy, I’ve heard things about you, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to give you a chance after what you did to my sister.” Y/n answered carefully. Jimmy turned his gaze back to the sky, thinking of what to say next.
“Is that why your sister was mad?” Jimmy asked.
“Mad is an understatement, Jimmy. You hurt her deeply.” Y/n told him.
“I guess I deserve that.” He muttered.
“You laughed in her face after she confronted you and asked why you had stood her up. Jimmy, she had a crush on you, and you broke her that day. It was the hardest thing to see. She cried herself to sleep for weeks after that.” Y/n explained. Jimmy just listened as he tried to recall those events.
“I knew something was up when you sent Devon Andrews over to talk to her. I didn’t want to leave but she insisted it was ok. Kayla was over the moon when she heard that ‘the Jimmy Keene’ wanted to take her to prom. To her, it was like her dreams were coming true but then you stood her up and I had to break it to her that I saw you with Kimberly Smith….in a not so appealing position.” Y/n said.
“I thought I heard someone that night, but Kimberly told me I was being stupid.” He admitted.
“The worst part was that she had worked up so much courage to talk to you and then you told her that you’d never be with someone like her and proceeded to laugh in her face in front of the whole school. You made her feel unwanted and worthless. Took her a long time to come back from that and then she met her husband.” Y/n spoke.
Jimmy downed the rest of his wine. He had no idea what to say.
“I remember the look on her face when she ran past me. I hated you then and I hate you still, so, in answer to your question, I guess I agreed to the date because I wanted to see if you were still the pig I knew you to be and from the things I’ve heard, you still are.” Y/n said calmly.
“Wow, thanks.” He muttered.
“Jimmy, you do it to yourself. There is no reason for you to act like that. From what I’ve seen tonight, you have potential to be the gentleman I know is in there, but you have to stop thinking that you are better than everyone else and the womanizing, that would have to stop too.” Y/n told him honestly.
Jimmy smiled a little at that.
“You sound like my grandmother.” He slightly chuckled. Y/n smiled.
“What made you want to ask me out?” Y/n asked, now curious.
“I saw you talking to Samantha, and I don’t know, I thought you looked hot. I figured I’d ask but then you gave me that unenthusiastic smile, and well, you had me hooked.” Jimmy admitted with a cheeky smile.
“Is that it?” Y/n asked. Jimmy shrugged.
“Ok, fine. I’d always had a crush on you but knew you were out of my league. I never knew how to talk to you, so I thought that if I made you do my homework, I’d get to talk to you more but then Devon and Courtney did what they did, and I did what I did. I knew I had blown it.” Jimmy confessed.
“You’re being serious?” Y/n asked. Jimmy nodded.
“Then when I got the invite for Samantha’s Brunch, I decided to go in the hopes that you’d be there, and you were. Eventually I worked up the courage to talk to you and then you gave me that unenthused smile. It made me more excited for our date.” He told her.
“The fact that I was unenthusiastic made you more excited. Jimmy, do you know how gross that makes you sound?” Y/n responded.
“I’m realizing that now.” He said and y/n chuckled.
“Jimmy, why don’t we start over now that we aired out that dirty laundry.” Y/n suggested.
“I’d really like that.” He replied and y/n smiled genuinely for the first time that night.
Both of them smiled at each other and that’s when they felt it. The unmistakable feeling of needing to be closer.
“Can I kiss you?” Jimmy whispered as he and y/n leaned in closer. Y/n bit her lower lip in anticipation and nodded, letting a small hum of allowance escape her lips.
Jimmy slowly connected his lips with y/n’s in a very heated, hungry and passionate kiss. One that left them both feeling light-headed, weak in the knees and hot for each other.
=
Jimmy’s kisses assaulted her body and set it on fire. His hands were strong and skilled, his lips well trained and his tongue, it should be registered as a weapon of mass destruction. The way it methodically lapped at her most sensitive area had her writhing in absolute pleasure. Never in her life did she think that she would be under this man, but she could see why he had so many women after him. He was for lack of a better word, a devilish sex god.
“Oh fuck.” Y/n gasped as Jimmy removed his fingers slowly. The sensation giving her belly butterflies.
“I’ve been thinking about this for so long.” Jimmy whispered, making y/n gaze up at him. She didn’t know whether to be turned off by that admission or turned on by it but with the way her body was feeling at that moment, she chose to let those words fuel her lust for him. She was enjoying this way too much and she really wanted the full Jimmy Keene experience.
“Shut up and fuck me.” Y/n moaned out as she felt Jimmy’s fingers teasing her.
Jimmy chuckled lowly and gave her a naughty smile.
“Yes ma’am.” He replied. Oh god this was good.
=
The next morning as the sun beamed in through the curtains of the lavish and expensive looking master suite, y/n woke with a start. Somewhere there was a loud whirring sound, and she was not appreciative of it. She was someone who hated being woken up early on the weekend. She viewed weekends as a time of rest and relaxation, not noise and chaos.
Y/n growled lowly and attempted to stretch but when she felt her body protest, she remembered the absolute pounding she received from the man no longer next to her. That’s when she realized that it must be him making such racket.
She gently maneuvered her sore, stiff and somewhat bruised body from the confines of Jimmy’s bed to go and see what he was up to but as soon as her feet hit the ground, the bedroom door opened to reveal Jimmy carrying a tray of assorted foods.
Eggs, toast, bacon, fruit and some sort of weird looking pastry. Not to mention whatever the fuck he felt was important to blend early in the morning.
“Morning beautiful.” Jimmy said, coming to a stop on his side of the bed.
“Morning. What is all of this?” Y/n asked, finding it difficult to watch his movements as her body was still facing the door.
“Sore?” He asked, dodging her question.
“What do you think genius.” Y/n snapped a little. Jimmy looked at her and raised his brow.
“Not a morning person I see.” He replied.
“Not on the weekends and especially not when someone wakes me up with their fucking noise.” She told him. Jimmy nodded.
“I’ll remember that for next time.” He said, making y/n’s brows shoot up.
“What makes you think there will be a next time?” She questioned with a hint of distain to her voice. Or maybe it was just sleep.
“Well, I assumed after you kept screaming my name over and over again last night, there would be a next time.” He said cheekily.
Y/n blushed and shook her head as she finally moved her body to lay back against the pillows.
“Cocky bastard.” Y/n muttered but made sure it was loud enough for him to hear.
Jimmy smirked at her.
“Try that again and maybe there will be a next time.” Y/n told him. She really did mean what she had said the night before. He really needed to tone down his actions if he wanted to get further in life.
“You’re right but I really would like it if we could do this again.” Jimmy said genuinely.
“The sex or dinner?” Y/n questioned.
“Dinner but I wouldn’t mind the sex part either.” He teased.
“Alright you horny prick, I’m starving. Let’s eat.” She replied as she made grabby hands toward the tray of assorted goods he brought up for them to enjoy.
Cardigans and bubblegum
Summary: Interference with the multiverse invokes consequences in other dimensions. Not long after returning to his own universe, Peter meets someone very much like himself, only he's used to the whole superpowers thing and she's… well, incredibly fresh.
Pairing: tasm!Peter Parker x OC (she/her); fluff, banter.
Warnings: violence, blood, nothing too graphic.
Written for @wicked-remarks ‘s October challenge “Wicked’s Kink or Treat”, under the first meeting prompt/trope. Seems like two days ago I had nothing and then madness rose from a severe caffeine binge.
--------------------------------------
Peter never thought that buying antiseptic at 4 p.m. on a Monday would set in motion an absolutely deranged course of events, but alas, there he was: in the first aid section of a Duane Reade when he caught a scent that had him metaphorically on the tips of his toes.
It was strange, yet deliriously irresistible. Mind addled and lizard brain fully in control, his sixth sense was not helping either, making him warm all over and pushing his legs in the direction of the snack aisle.
Besides his own mind, the only other loud thing in the entire store was the frilly pink cardigan that entered his view once he rounded the corner. Rows upon rows of extravagantly colorful treats, yet the single most striking hue was draped over a young woman's shoulders, bright and explosive like the fight he'd just come out of.
On account of it being broken, his nose was not, in fact, working at full capacity, but even with that obstacle, it was impossible to mistake the source of that scent for anything else. It was coming from her.
He didn't get to stare for a long time, as she turned to face him without prompting.
Pretty.
Her judgment of him, however, was probably along the lines of creepy, because he had yet to justify his presence. He couldn't even if he tried, because the chaos in his mind pulled every nerve tight. His brain was vibrating in a strange pattern, something he'd only experienced once in his life. He was sure to never forget the way it felt to be yanked into another universe.
"Uhh… can I help you?"
Also scary.
Something about her tone of voice resurrected vivid memories, most of them dating back to high school. His mind was flashing the words queen bee in neon green - oddly, the same color as the vomit forcefully expelled from his body when Kayla McAdams humiliated him for stumbling into her at lunch. Freshman year wasn't something he reminisced about fondly.
Shaking off the pins and needles, he took a second to find something less than imbecile to say in greeting.
"Hi! Sorry about that. That was weird. I just haven't… seen you around before."
Maybe closer to imbecile than he initially thought. It showed on her face.
"It's a city of eight million people," she said slowly, looking around as if wanting to escape - or get help. Either way, Peter felt awkward for it.
"Yeah, I know. I know. I just meant that, well -"
He stopped himself. What was he supposed to say to her? Hi, sorry - you're just sort of making me feel like I've been electrocuted. Trust me, I know what that's like. What? No, I'm not flirting with you.
"Are you ok?"
He wasn't sure what she was asking. Was it the strange behavior or his messed up face that the inquiry referred to? Admittedly, he probably looked awful, having crawled his way out of a fight on the other side of the city just an hour ago.
He gathered more of his wayward thoughts in the hopes of communicating something intelligible. His hands were itching at his sides.
"I don't mean for this to sound weird, but do you, by any chance, uh… "
Maybe he had a concussion. It was very possible. Maybe it wasn't even real, what he was feeling. He could've just been hallucinating, or his senses could've gone haywire from the fight and needed time to settle down.
"You smell weird," she said curtly.
Another flash of neon green. This was not going well.
"I don't know why I said that. Fuck."
She was looking anywhere but at him, and for a moment, Peter was relieved. He didn't care about her comment at the same time that it was the most important thing he'd heard so far. While he usually did smell all sorts of ways after spending time in the suit, this was one of the miraculous few instances when he knew that it wasn't the case. He'd showered, for goodness' sake. If he still reeked of sewer, he'd be able to smell it on himself, but he couldn't. And yet, she could.
"What do I smell like?" he laughed breathily. She smelled like bubblegum and early winter.
The woman shook her head, hands dropping to her sides while her gaze settled on the rows of candy to her left.
"Sorry, that was rude. You smell fine - I'm just having a bit of a weird day. Or week, you know. Probably in for a weird life. Anyway, forget I said anything," she said, much to Peter's appreciation.
Interesting.
"Hey, no judgment. Same here. Weird life - could say that again."
It could've been him finally sounding less deranged that made her shoulders drop into a more relaxed posture. Her eyes returning to him was also encouraging. He didn't know what he was finding in them, but he couldn't look away.
"I don't mean to pry - and you don't have to answer - but what did you mean when you said I smell weird?" he asked, shifting his weight as he took a few steps forward. His senses were acutely aware of the increased proximity. They were definitely pointing at her, but he didn't know why.
His question had her lips pressing together as she paused chewing the bubblegum, only to unexpectedly pop it with nonchalance.
"I really didn't mean anything by it," she said, busying herself with studying the different brands on offer, one hand on the edge of the shelf and the other browsing. With her half-turned away, Peter took another step forward. She tensed. Her fingers were twitching over the packet of Nerds, but the rest of her was as still as a sculpture. Moments passed silently.
"Are you ok?" Peter asked, returning her earlier question.
Her breathing was so shallow that Peter backed away instinctively, thinking he creeped her out and feeling bad for it for all of five seconds. He watched as she took the colorful candy from the shelf with great care. He thought she'd go to drop it in the small basket by her feet, but her hand hesitated over it - once, twice and then her eyes got wider and she dropped the hand back by her side.
She looked at him with an awkward smile, trying to appear relaxed when she was everything but. It was sort of comical, and if Peter didn't know better, he might've shrugged and moved on.
It was hard to do when the candy stayed stuck to her visibly slack hand. Oh boy.
"Need some help there?" Peter asked. He wasn't bothering with masking anything anymore, not when his nerve endings were singing with the need to just do something. The familiarity of the situation he was looking at couldn't be ignored, and neither could her distress. He was aware that part of it was due to his presence, and he wanted to let her know she didn't need to be scared.
"No, I'm good. Peachy," she breathed out. Her left hand was still on the edge of the shelf, and she was trying to make it look like she was casually leaning against it. Peter shoved down an involuntary snicker.
"You sure?"
"Yeah, just, you know. Rough week."
Yeah. He knew. Which was why he couldn't leave her to deal with it alone.
"I could show you how to get unstuck, if you want," he said, motioning to her left hand.
Silence. Her smile vanished.
"I'm not stuck," she declared with a scoff.
"Yeah… you're pretty stuck.", he chuckled. Briefly clearing his throat, Peter took a few steps forward with his hands raised and palms open to show he meant no harm. He was glad the store was as dead mid-afternoon as it was at two in the morning, sweet spots he'd learned by heart.
Her reaction wasn't convincingly unbothered, but she stood up straighter and pulled her shoulders back. The fingers of her right hand were again twitching at her side and rustling the plastic wrapping of the candy, which Peter knew usually came in a tiny cardboard box. A new flavor. Hm.
Step after tiny step, he approached with care usually reserved for frightened animals and was glad when it paid off. Now only a foot away, both of them were locked in a hypnotic stare. Peter's eyes took in each and every flicker of her own as she studied his face with unbroken concentration. He couldn't help feeling like they were having a conversation entirely in their heads, and his spidey sense told him things he didn't even know how to decipher. His mouth felt dry.
"Here," he said quietly, lifting his right hand and slowly, gently placing it over her left on the shelf. An electrical current traveled along his spine the moment they touched, and it seemed she felt it too. The eye contact had not yet been broken by either of them.
"One finger at a time, yeah? Relax, breathe out, and focus on my skin," he paused. Then, "That sounded weird. Sorry."
She didn't say anything in return, but it was a good sign that she hadn't stopped him at any point and seemed to listen to his instructions. One by one, he felt her digits shift beneath his palm as they uncoupled from the shelf. Once he knew they were all clear, he slowly brought their hands away, the back of hers nestled in his palm.
Seconds ticked by with only the background music of the store to fill the silence. No one moved.
"Hi. I'm Peter," he said on a long exhale.
"I'm Maya."
A smile tugged at his lips.
"Hi," he repeated.
"How did you know - "
"Same way you do. It's a sixth sense. It's going off right now, isn't it?”
The young woman nodded once, and her eyes were studying him just as much as his were flitting across her face.
"You're making my brain itch," she said bluntly, to which Peter chuckled, surprised.
"Yeah, same here. I just get the feeling that it's a lot newer for you than it is for me."
He left the question open on purpose, watching her take a quick but deep breath before answering.
"Yeah. Like I said - weird week," she said, lips pursing in a grimace.
Peter waited for her to add more, but she didn't.
"Wanna talk about it?" he offered lightly, sensing her hesitation.
"I don't know - no offense, but I don't know you."
"Sure you do."
He was definitely being bold, taking this route, but he could blame it on everything that had happened lately. Traveling across the space-time continuum certainly helped one loosen up.
"What?"
"Well, you know - friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and all that."
He waited. And waited. And - there it was. The shock and surprise. She pulled her hand back from his.
"What? You - no, you're not." she scoffed.
"I'm pretty sure I am."
"If you were, you wouldn't just tell random strangers about it."
"I normally don't. This is a special case."
"I'm a case?"
"Not like - you're not a case, like a case to solve;  you're just - you're like me."
He shouldn't have sounded so idiotically giddy when he said it, and he also shouldn't have been smiling like he was, but it was nearly impossible. After all he'd witnessed not that long ago, the prospect of meeting someone very much like him in his own universe sent his brain into premature decomposition. Two months had passed since he got pulled into a different dimension and had the experience of a lifetime. Since he met his brothers.
It was difficult to stifle the excitement bubbling up at the thought of something like that happening without visiting another universe. And then his smile promptly dropped when he realized - what if she was from a different universe? And if that was the case, then what could've happened to bring her here? And how could he ask?
"Where are you from?"
That was not the way to ask.
"Uh… the suburbs?" she frowned.
"But from New York," he clarified.
"No, the suburbs of Ohio. I'm just getting snacks here, at four p.m. on a Monday. Should head back soon if I don't want to miss my train." she sassed, head tilting to the side.
"Ha-ha. Seriously. You haven't like, seen any strange portals or anything? Haven't zapped to a different place out of nowhere?"
"You know, you still haven't offered any, like, proof of identity. How do I know you're not just messing with me?" she asked, pulling her shoulders straight. She seemed to do that when she wanted to look brave. Cute. In that scary, queen bee way.
And again, what was it with everyone and asking for superhero IDs?
With a tiny sigh, he held her gaze as he pulled the sleeve of his sweatshirt up, revealing the red and black of the device so familiar he forgot it was there half the time. She stared at it unblinkingly.
"Want me to crawl on the ceiling to prove it?" he asked, more dread than sarcasm permeating his voice.
"No… that's - that's plenty, I think," she replied without taking her eyes off his wrist.
"Oh."
"Yeah."
Pause.
"So about -"
"What happened to your face?" she interrupted. He blanked, sucking air through his teeth. A small smile found its way to her lips at his expression.
"I uh… fought a weird guy in a leopard suit?"
"Seriously? Ugh, animal print hasn't been in for like, eight years.", she said with a raised brow. Peter wasn't sure how to respond to her being more concerned about the fashion style of the guy that tried to kill him than she was about anything else. He had to be blunt, or they'd get nowhere. And yet, she surprised him once more.
"Did you do this to me?"
"Do what to you?" he asked, alarmed. She was the opposite.
"This. Whatever I have now - ew, that sounds like I'm diseased. Like, I just woke up like this four days ago. I've been sticking to everything, it's so annoying. I can hear people gossip at work from the other side of the room, and it's depressing, because I didn't know they were talking about me. I feel like I'm on crack, I'm twitchy 24/7 and I cannot.stop.eating."
Peter laughed in disbelief. So similar, yet so different.
"Oh, what - because you're much better? I've seen the news. You move like a bug." she reprimanded, crossing her arms. His laughter fizzled into animated chuckles. Apparently, finding stressful situations funny wasn't one of the things they had in common.
"That's because I am one. Kinda. And so are you," he offered, childishly wanting to rile her up. He was beginning to enjoy this little talk. She took the bait.
"Me? Am I dressed in a skin tight - horrendous, by the way - onesie with spiders on it?"
"I meant that I move like that on instinct. You should try it, it's fun. And it's not a onesie." Peter said flippantly, his own arms coming up over his chest. They probably looked like two petulant toddlers staring each other down.
"Whatever."
Neither of them said anything in the brief pause, but both had more questions and too much pride to ask any of them. The stalemate was punctuated by an announcement made over the store's speakers.
3 for 2 on all beef jerky flavors at checkout.
Another pause. A growling stomach. Hers.
Immediate embarrassment. Peter felt both smug and charitable enough not to laugh. Unassumingly plucking a Snickers bar off the shelf, he held it out to her with his brows raised.
"Peace?" he asked innocently.
"Very funny."
"Hey, I mean it. I know what this is like. I wanna help you, if you'll let me?"
There it was. He hoped she'd say yes, or at least be open to hearing him out, but the look on her face wasn't giving him much hope. She was shifting uncomfortably, fingers pulling gently at the fluffy bits sticking out of her cardigan every which way. Her teeth were abusing her lower lip, and little sighs of frustration kept leaving her mouth at random intervals.
He wasn't that bad, was he? He thought he'd built a good enough reputation for himself, even with the Bugle's militant campaign to sink public confidence in the web slinger.
"Look, I know you don't really have a reason to trust me, but I promise tha -"
"What is that?" she interrupted, looking around the isle and then back to him.
Peter took a moment to get back on track.
"What's what?"
"That. There's something here. I don't know what it is. I'm kinda freaking out."
He looked around with her, listening for anything that she might've picked up on, but his ears told him nothing.
"I think you might be a little sensitive. It happens a lot in the beginning. Just try to focus on -"
"No, it's not that. I know what that's like. This is different - it's here. Like - like it's here, but not?"
Peter wasn't sure what to say. His spidey sense was not going off in any capacity. Everything was tranquil, yet she was getting more agitated, bouncing on the balls of her feet and hugging herself even tighter.
"Hey - everything's ok. You're ok. Nothing's happening. What do you feel?"
Quick as lightning, she reached out with her right hand and poked a finger right on the soft flesh between his eyes.
"There. Feels like static."
"Ow," Peter said, though it didn't hurt at all. She retracted her hand just as quickly, looking at him expectantly.
"Well?"
"Well what?"
"I thought you said you'd help me. You're not being very helpful."
"I'm trying to be helpful, but there's nothing wrong right now."
"Then why do I feel like this?"
"Like what?!"
"Like I'm going to die!"
At first, he thought he imagined the vibration - as though it was a hallucination resulting from the exhaustion seeping into his bones.
And then it happened again.
And again.
And again.
Peter had only enough time to get them both to the ground before shards of glass went flying. The tile floor was undulating under his knees, dull and sustained. The street noise was no longer muffled, owing to the storefront windows having been blown out. It was everything Peter was familiar with - screaming people, asphyxiating smoke and crumbling infrastructure.
Mayhem.
"Are you alright?" he asked quickly, looking down to notice a small cut on her temple. A moment ago she'd been huddled in his arms, and now she was looking up with wide eyes that communicated nothing but fear.
There was no time at all to think about the intricacies of the situation - how she sensed something was amiss way before she was supposed to and how he didn't sense anything.
A rumble of vibration cut through their chests that elevated the tension in chaotic patterns, forcing one's breath to slow and the other's to cease entirely. Whatever was coming shook the ground under them. He had to get in the suit.
Moving away from her and into a secluded spot proved difficult as the hold on his forearm prevented his departure. Her eyes were pleading.
"Hey, I have to go. I have to suit up, ok? I'm coming back, I promise." he reassured, right hand over her left.
Urgency building, he pulled himself out of her grasp and searched for the nearest alcove away from security cameras. This was a rehearsed dance he couldn't teach to anybody, known so crudely only by him as he emerged from the flurry of eccentric movements a new person. It was different behind the mask. Questions he might've had were put on hold as the new environment pushed his senses to acclimate under duress. The ground shook even harder. The sounds of struggle had him moving before he finished replacing his cartridges.
Rounding the corner, his assessment of the candy isle induced dread on the spot. At the other end was the strangely enthusiastic Russian he'd fought at lunch, looking just as ridiculous as the first impression of him but also bigger. He definitely looked taller and more muscular, tiny rips in his suit that could be attributed to his sudden growth. Now naked from the waist up, Kraven wore only a fur vest that had not been there last time. Peter was looking up at the good foot and a half he had over him. He was a mountain.
What the hell happened to him?
Between them and right where he'd left her, Maya stood still, her back to Peter. She was closer to Kraven than to him, and the man - animal? - had changed demeanor and size. He was sniffing the air. The moment Kraven closed his eyes to inhale, Peter ran, crossing the distance swiftly and pushing her behind him. He started moving them back one slow step at a time, keeping his arm in front of her and ignoring her death grip on it.
"Wow, he does look awful. And that's not leopard print, that's tiger," she muttered.
Was she serious?
"Oh, I'm sorry, I must've gotten my killer cats mixed up," Peter shot back, eyes trained ahead. His senses were only now going haywire. Kraven was more dangerous than he'd been only hours ago.
They neared the end of the isle right as the threat zoned in on both of them. His eyes were not as they were before, pupils in a thin black slit against yellow corneas .
"Like you," he said, voice rumbling as if his entire chest vibrated with the words.
That wasn't good.
"You like me? You tried to kill me!" Peter retorted, trying to make light of the situation while he thought of a way out for Maya. He knew that wasn't what Kraven meant.
"She is like you."
"Leave her out of this, Kraven. She's not like me. You'll be hurting an innocent person," Peter warned, pushing her further behind him.
"If I defeat you both, I can finally claim my title. I'll be the world's best hunter!" he snarled.
Earlier when they'd clashed, he seemed to have the same motivation for fighting, but he'd made it clear there was no murderous intent. Peter wasn't so sure that was the case anymore. Whatever happened to him, whatever he took, Kraven wasn't himself.
"Ugh, this is so lame," she complained quietly.
That wasn't how Peter would describe the situation.
"Listen to me: I want you to focus on getting out of here. I'll deal with the big guy; try to go around us when I engage," Peter instructed.
"When you engage? You talk like this?" she whispered back, apparently thinking Kraven couldn't hear her if she did.
"Just do as I say!"
"Oh, don't worry. I wasn't gonna stick around for this. I'd literally rather -"
Kraven lunged.
Peter met him halfway, throwing one last glance at Maya ducking around the shelves and running before he put all his concentration into the fight. The first thing he learned was that Kraven was now more of a wall than a person, and Peter's reflexes did not protect him as well as they had in their previous altercation. Catching a swipe from this guy would be distinctly unpleasant, and he figured out exactly how unpleasant when he parried a second too late. He went flying into a wall of sunscreen lotion that gave him an idea he was instantly proud of. It'd be easier to topple a guy whose footing was a little slippery.
Grabbing an armful of blue bottles - why was everything blue? - he threw them one by one with enough force that they lost their integrity on impact with the hunter. It looked ridiculous, but soon enough, Peter discovered just how different the result was from what he had planned.
Kraven did not cartoonishly slip when he moved forward. He took three steps before halting, eyes flaming murderously. Based on the way his nose was twitching, he did not appreciate having one of his senses overwhelmed by SPF.
The next time he went at Peter, it was with renewed determination that scaled into irreparable destruction. The longer they engaged, the less recognizable the store was as anything other than the site of a demolition.
With smoke billowing from the violence, even Peter's well-honed senses were struggling with reaction times. He felt Kraven's high kick land between his shoulders and soon his chest embraced one of the last upstanding walls in the building.
He'd had worse. So why couldn't he get up? Even as he heard the footfalls of the hunter approaching, his organs didn't feel like they were in the right place.
C'mon, Parker. Get up.
Kraven's foot slammed down on his back, flattening his body into the floor again and breaking the tile underneath.
He really is trying to kill me. It'd really suck dying here -
"Hey! You big ugly brute! Get off him!"
The pressure on his spine eased up at the same time that the one inside his skull multiplied exponentially. What was she doing?!
With Kraven stepping away, Peter tried his best to get to his feet before something terrible happened, but the floor kept pulling him back down as if gravity itself was holding a grudge. Letting out a grunt of frustration, he pushed even harder and heard something snap - only, it didn't come from his own body.
Oh God.
With worse urgency than before, he made it to his feet and caught his breath for a moment, trying to locate Kraven in his immediate surroundings. The smoke was overwhelming every one of his senses. Consequently, he realized what had been thrown at him only when his back made contact with the floor. Something soft lay on his chest.
Hair. Pink fluff under his hands. Little gasps and curses in his ears.
She got off him before he could open his mouth to say anything, and was on her feet with a frustrated huff.
"Ugh! What is your problem?!" she shrieked.
She did not direct that at him. Her eyes were looking elsewhere, hands fixing her clothes and hair in a frenzy. Her left arm was noticeably resting at her side, a tear in the fabric at her shoulder.
"What's his problem?! What's yours? I told you to go!" Peter freaked. Getting up again was challenging, but he managed for the sake of pulling her away and towards the windows that had been blown out. This far inside the store, they were barely visible.
"I felt guilty! I wasn't gonna come back but he - I saw him flatten you like a squirrel, and I ran over a squirrel last year! Ugh, it's awful!"
"Oh my God, that is awful!" Peter said in mock horror. Guilt over a squirrel made her endanger her life. He couldn't believe he had to deal with this on top of everything else.
Why was he finding it so difficult to focus? Not only that, but he was and felt slow. He should have dodged - or at least seen that coming - but he didn't. He'd been feeling weird since his last fight against the hunter, and things weren't helped by the ridiculous circumstance in which he was now trapped. Even with the smoke clearing the closer they got to the windows in the checkout area, it was still thick enough that he couldn't see six feet in front of him.
"Listen to me: you need to get out. You can't help me. You're too new at this and you're gonna get hurt."
"I helped you just now!" she complained.
"Yeah, and it probably made him angry!"
Too late.
Whatever happened in the next few seconds, neither Peter nor Maya could react quickly enough. Caught in the path of a large object thrown their way, both got flattened this time, but it was Peter's situational awareness that immediately kicked in. An entire shelf had just been used as a projectile, at a speed too fast to dodge. Kraven was growing stronger, and something was very wrong with his own powers, because he felt weaker by the minute.
Despite his mind telling him he needed to figure out what it was, his body was taking up all the energy just to move the shelf off both of them. The shelf was difficult to maneuver, and he didn't want to risk injuring Maya further. There were no sounds coming from her, and he doubted she'd stay quiet in a situation like this. Silence didn't seem to be her preferred mode of operation.
"Hey, hey! Are you ok?!" he asked, hoping she'd turn her head left to face him. All he could see was hair, and it sank his heart to not hear a response.
The shelf was gone in an instant.
Wherever the adrenaline had come from, he welcomed the voracity it reinstated to his tired bones. For a brief moment, he felt normal - and just in time, because Kraven was charging at him from the retreating smoke. Now confident again, Peter webbed his eyes with astounding accuracy, a second later following up with more shots to his legs that destabilized the giant hunter and brought him to the floor face-first.
Peter finally got his fantasy of a cartoonish takedown, and he would've been happy with it, if Kraven didn't immediately recover. Keep your distance, play your advantage, Peter thought. His strength was not his advantage when faced with an eight-foot mass of muscle and fur. But, his mouth could be.
"You know what? I think our little game is over," Peter called from the ceiling.
Kraven didn't answer. Instead, so fast that Peter almost missed it, the hunter's eyes flashed back to the color he remembered them to be: a simple brown, with no inhuman characteristics. What followed was even stranger, because either he was hallucinating, or Kraven's body was visibly shrinking, muscles trembling in a violent spasm. An agonized groan escaped the hunter as his hands came up to cover his face.
Seconds later, he was kneeling on what was left of the floor.
"I think whatever you took must be wearing off, huh?" Peter mused, watching him carefully for sudden movements.
Certain that Kraven wouldn't be retaliating any time soon, he took the opportunity to scan his surroundings, breathing a sigh of relief when he couldn't spot Maya where he'd last seen her. However, the same breath left him lightheaded as his eyes fell upon the trail of blood from the shelf's remains to an area by the leftmost checkout line. All caution was thrown to the wind.
Calling out for her as his legs carried him down the horrifying tracks, Peter noticed for the very first time that the closer he got, the worse he felt. His thoughts veered towards what he hoped was an erroneous assumption, but stranger things had happened. Two months ago his mind was forcibly opened to the reality of interdimensional travel. This would not be incredibly far-fetched.
A hacking cough disrupted his analysis and replaced it with instantaneous concern. Finally coming into view, Maya was crouched beneath the counter in the spot usually occupied by the cashier. Clutching her left side and breathing heavily, she jumped when he materialized from the smoke and backed up into the small space. To his surprise, her tension did not ease as he kneeled in front of her.
"N-no! No, you - you need to get," she said with another cough, "you need to get away. Away from here."
Peter ignored her request on account of wanting to deny reality for a while longer, especially when he noticed the pink cardigan rapidly turning a different color where she was pressing it with her hand.
"I'm not goin' anywhere." He shook his head. "We're getting you out, yeah? You'll be ok. You can heal," he said, reaching out to place his gloved hand over hers.
"Listen to me! Every time I'm near you, I feel like I'm going to die!" she rasped, making him recoil in shock.
"I felt it when I ran away," she began on a shaky breath, "and when you were on the ground. I felt really strong. And as soon as I was next to you, I lost it."
Come on, Parker. You know she's right. You've felt it since the beginning.
He knew he was being stubborn. If she had figured out what was happening, either by reason or instinct, then he definitely had a responsibility to not be obtuse. And yet.
"I can't just leave you here," he tried.
"If you don't, one of us will die," she pleaded. He noticed how truly frightened she looked, perhaps for the first time. Her entire demeanor had changed. He had to act.
"Alright, come on. Get up, and when I say run, you run," he instructed, but she was shaking her head before he had a chance to finish.
"I can't."
"Yes, you can. You can do it, Maya. I promise."
"There's something in my back," she whispered then, another cough shaking her upper body. Appalled, he watched a few drops of blood spill past her lips as she calmed. It short-circuited the command center of his brain. Before he could stop himself, Peter was turning her around in the small space and discovering with mild horror that a short metal beam was lodged in the spot where her lung should be, though thankfully not very deeply. It looked like a corner of the shelf they'd been hit with.
"I need to get this out."
"What?! No!"
"Maya, I need to!"
"No, you don't!"
"You'll be fine! I've had worse!"
"And I haven't!"
Peter ripped out the piece without warning, and immediately found himself on the receiving end of a world-class slap.
"Ugh! You - you - Dickhead! You absolute - prick!" she screeched, though to Peter it was evident she was having trouble settling on names to call him. He laughed. The situation was fucked, but he was laughing. He couldn't help it; it felt like bickering with the sibling he never had.
"I think the words you're looking for are 'thank you'," he said lightly, cheek still tingling from the impressive blow she dealt him.
"As if! You just ripped out my insides!" she glowered, hand coming up one more time, this time aiming for his chest. He didn't stop her.
"Are you always this dramatic?" he shot back, amused.
For a moment, he didn't know which was more dangerous: going back to face Kraven, or staying here with her. He was delighted. And perhaps a little off-kilter.
"Are you always this dickish?" she returned with a scowl.
"You already used that one. Gotta come up with new insults if you're gonna keep up with me."
"Keep up with you? I can't wait to get away from you!"
Silence. Moments passed in a fierce stare-down. And then it appeared he wasn't the only one who felt a little deranged. He watched her curiously as she looked away with a chuckle.
"I just realized… I was waiting for you to blink first," she snickered.
"No worries. We can reschedule this for later," Peter reassured.
"You wish."
"Alright. Come on, enough chit-chat. Let's get outta here." Peter helped her up carefully, prompting another glare.
"So you can be a gentleman."
"I'll have you know I'm nothing but."
The first thing he noticed upon rising to full height was the absence of Kraven. He wasn't where Peter had last seen him, and if he could at last rely on his senses, he wasn't anywhere in the store. With a focused sigh, Peter gently took her right arm and hooked it over the back of his neck, encouraging her to lean on him when he noticed how feeble she actually looked.
"This feels wrong," Maya breathed out, though she didn't protest his gesture.
"I'm offended by that," Peter mocked as he directed them towards the exit.
"No, not this. Although you do smell kinda bad, so… gross.”
"It's not me, it's the suit. Laundry day's tomorrow."
"This feels wrong. Can't you feel it?" she repeated.
Peter wasn't really listening. He could see the light from the windows through the smoke. They were so close to fresh air.
"Feel what?"
His senses crashed in all too late. His best reaction time was nothing compared to the speed of what hit them.
Maya was ripped from him in an instant, and when he predictably lunged forward to grab her, claws slashed deeply into his chest and he was pushed away. He tumbled to the floor with the breath knocked out of him. And though his mouth didn't work for a moment, his ears bled with the pitch of silence. He felt a surge of strength flow through his chest with horrific intensity.
He was calling her name as the blood pounded in his ears. Dull thuds shook the floor under him, getting further and further away. Whether he crawled or jumped to his feet was uncertain, but he stumbled forward blind, grasping at the edge of the mask to remove the image in front of him. His eyes would tell the truth.
His eyes saw nothing but what used to be a bright pink cardigan.
So much blood. Peter collapsed next to her with no sensation in his legs.
"H-hey. Hey!" He grabbed at her unthinkingly, gathering her upper body and shielding it against his chest. Her eyes were open, unfocused.
"Look at me. Maya, look at me. Please, please!"
Only a weak breath remained in her chest. A weaker heartbeat still. He was clinging to it with desperation. He couldn't do anything but beg. His mind was stretched to the absolute breaking point.
'I felt it when I ran away. And when you were on the ground. I felt really strong.'
For the longest moment of his life, he was paralyzed by uncooperative limbs. If he didn't let go of her now, she'd be gone.
"I'll make it better. I swear. I'll make it go away."
Debris was everywhere. He grabbed the first piece that looked sturdy enough. The adrenaline made it so that the first few seconds didn't even hurt, but there was only so much slack he could get for putting a wooden spear through his chest. He fell to the floor with a grunt, narrowly avoiding their heads colliding.
He waited until the sirens outside got quieter and his fingers got colder, but he could no longer fight the pull of sleep.
And then, a weight fell over his almost numb right hand. One of his eyes was pried open uncomfortably.
"Please don't be dead." Her breath hit his face point blank, and maybe he was hallucinating from blood loss, but she still smelled like bubblegum.
"Not yet," he choked out.
"Ok… good. I don't - don't want Spider-Man on my conscience," Maya said with a wheeze, leaning back down next to him but holding his hand still.
"Thought I was a dickhead." Talking really wasn't something to do at the moment, but he couldn't help it.
"You got bumped up a couple tiers."
"Why?" he croaked.
She turned her head to catch his eye.
"You just put a stake through your chest. Like a vampire wannabe," she said. And then, more quietly, "For me."
"That's what it takes to… to get in your… good graces?" He should stop talking.
"Yes," she whispered.
"Hard to please."
Peter thought he fell asleep, because there was no other way that he heard what he heard without it being a dream.
"You haven't seen anything yet."
A/N: So, not even I know where I was going with this. It started out as a completely different thing and ended up a mess. Do take into account that I may or may not have been exceedingly caffeinated while writing. Read at your own risk. Also, I went ham with the italics in this one. It was... a choice. If anyone’s wondering what the weird thing was that was going on, it’s the fact that two people with the same powers aren’t supposed to exist in the same dimension, and this is the universe’s way of correcting it - making one weaker when one is stronger.
Cuddliest Avenger
Tumblr media
Kayla has been best friends with Clint Barton for years. He finds her after the battle of New York and takes care of her.
Rated T ~1,600 words
-----------------------------------
As soon as Clint realized that Kayla had been in Stark Tower through the entire battle for New York, he was running through the halls.
"Kayla!"
Tony said the evacuation plan would call for anyone inside to head to a secure basement area. Practically a bomb shelter. Best there was.
He hit the large metal door.
"Kayla!"
Of course she wouldn't hear him. He punched the code into the security panel and the air seal released, allowing him to pull the door open.
"Kayla!"
"Clint?"
His eyes scanned through the crowd in the large room until he spotted her. He exhaled, relieved, and moved toward her until he was able to wrap his arms around her.
"Clint, what the hell is going on out there?"
"I'll tell you about it later. It's over."
He held her at arms length and looked her over.
"You ok?"
"Me? I'm fine. You look like you've been through war."
"I was."
"How bad was it?"
"Bad. Come on." He grabbed her hand and turned to the rest of the group. "Everyone can leave, but prepare yourself... there's a lot of damage up there."
No one moved.
"Come on, guys, let's go. Find your families. Come on."
He started guiding people toward the door, but never let Kayla out of his sight. The thought of her being in the same building as Loki, knowing what Loki was capable of... she would freak out when he told her what happened to him.
Once everyone was out, Clint grabbed her hand again. He led her to the ground floor and outside. She stared, eyes wide, her hand over her mouth.
"Where's Nat? Stark?"
"They're both ok. Got some new faces for you to meet, too. They're finishing up with some cop stuff, then we're heading over to this shawarma place that Tony wants to try."
"Seriously? That's what Tony thinks of after everything that happened that caused this?" She motioned around to the destruction.
"Hey, fighting aliens works up an appetite."
"I'm sorry... fighting what?"
"Later. I promise."
He started to walk away, but she tugged his hand.
"Hey, have you called Laura? Does she know you're ok? I mean, I didn't have a tv down there, but I'm sure this was all over the news."
Clint smiled. "I called. She said to do this when I found you."
He hugged her so tight that her feet came off the ground.
"Right, because Laura can lift me up," Kayla giggled.
"I'm just doing what I was told. Let's go."
Kayla held back tears as they walked down the street. It would take a long time to get the city back to normal.
Clint tried to shield her from the bodies, both human and alien, that littered their path, but it was impossible.
Inside the restaurant, Natasha and Tony sat with a few others. They all looked battered and exhausted. Natasha gave her a weak smile, but no one said a word.
"Hey, guys," Clint said, "this is Kayla." He pointed around the table. "That's Steve, Thor, and Bruce."
Everyone gave a nod. Clint picked up an overturned chair and sat it next to the only empty one at the table left for him. They all ate in silence.
Kayla traced some cuts and scrapes on Clint's arm and he grabbed her hand.
"I'm fine."
"I know."
"So," Thor's booming voice cut through the silence, "Hawk... man—"
"Name's Clint."
"Is this your lady love?"
Kayla and Clint both chuckled, and Natasha shook her head, smiling.
"No, she's not."
"But you're so..."
"Sickening is what they are," Tony said. "I know I thought you two were a couple the first time I saw you together."
"We're just friends," Kayla said.
"Best friends." Clint winked.
"You should just hook up and get it over with."
"Leave them alone, Tony," Natasha said.
"Do I sense jealousy?"
Natasha rolled her eyes. "Do you know me to be the jealous type?"
"Does anyone really know you?"
She smirked.
Kayla sighed. "Have you seen my apartment building? Is it still standing?"
"No idea. We can go check it out."
"I need to. If it's still there you can clean up. Nat, you want to come?"
"No, I have some things to take care of."
Clint and Kayla stood.
"It was nice to meet you all. Maybe I'll see you again under better circumstances."
As they walked through the streets, Clint kept stopping to help people; pointing them to cops, the relief crew, or checkpoints that were being set up for anyone who couldn't get in touch with their families. Cell towers were either down over overloaded. Kayla helped him when she could.
As they approached her street there was a little less debris, which gave her some hope. Finally seeing her building, she breathed a sigh of relief.
"It's still in one piece."
"Most of the fighting was centralized a few blocks over. You were lucky."
"Was I? Or did a certain superhero keep those things away from my street?"
"I have no idea what you mean."
"Sure." She punched him in the shoulder.
"Ow. Abuse." He rubbed his arm.
"Such a drama queen."
As they got closer, several guys came out of her building carrying tv's and other expensive items. Kayla slowed her walk.
"That doesn't look good."
Clint wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her into a quicker pace.
"Stay close."
They ducked inside and took the stairs to the fifth floor. Clint pushed her behind him when he realized a lot of the doors on her floor were open. He notched an arrow into his bow.
"Hold onto me so I know you're there. Keep an eye behind you, though."
They eased down the hallway and Clint checked around her doorframe before entering her apartment. The living room looked fine, but as they rounded a corner to her bedroom Clint raised his bow.
"Put the laptop down."
The man froze at Clint's command. He looked over his shoulder at Clint.
"I've had a long day. I'm not interested in fighting or arresting you, just put that down and get out."
The intruder put the laptop back on the desk. Clint circled around the bed, Kayla still clinging to him from behind, as the man slowly walked to the door.
"I want to hear the front door shut when you leave."
A moment later, there was a slam.
"Stay here."
Clint left the bedroom, arrow at the ready, and came back a minute later.
"All clear. Damn looters."
Kayla threw her arms around him. "I'm so glad you came with me. He could have killed me."
"Nah. He wasn't armed. Just an opportunist."
"Clint, that man was in my apartment. In my bedroom."
"Come here." He pulled her into a hug. "You're ok. You know I won't let anything happen to you."
"I know, but if you hadn't been here—"
"But I was. End of story. And I'm staying. Your lock is broken."
"Great."
"I told Laura I'd likely have to hang around, anyway."
"I have the landline if you want to call her."
"Yeah. She'll be glad to know you're ok."
Clint grabbed the cordless phone from its base and called his wife while he followed Kayla around the apartment. She went through everything to make sure nothing was missing.
"Hey, babe. I'm with Kayla. — Yeah, looters are out. Some guy was in her apartment, so — Yep. That's what I was thinking. You good for a few more days? — Love you. Bye."
Clint put the phone back on the charger.
"Laura says hi, and that she'll kick my ass if I don't stay and make sure you're ok."
"I love that woman."
"Get in line. I'll go move some furniture in front of the door, then I'm taking a shower. I'm covered in all kinds of stuff."
"You could be covered in sewage and I wouldn't kick you out right now."
"Ha! Liar."
"I think I have some of your stuff from the last time you stayed here."
"Great, because this outfit isn't comfortable for sleeping."
After they were both showered, they sat together on the sofa.
"I'm exhausted," Clint said.
"I can't even imagine."
"You must be, too. Adrenaline crash will wipe you out."
"Believe me, once my head hits that pillow..."
"Then why aren't you in bed?"
"The looter has me freaked out. He was in my bedroom, Clint."
"But I'm here. Nothing to worry about."
"Just... the thought of sleeping in there. I feel violated."
"Come on." He took her hand and led her to the bedroom. "Get in. No arguing."
"Clint—"
"What did I just say?"
"Who are you, my father?"
"Get in the bed."
"Fine."
Kayla slid under the covers and lay on her side, then Clint turned out the light. He straightened the comforter, then lay on top of it, and snuggled up close behind her.
"I'll stay until you're asleep."
Kayla took a deep breath. "What would I do without you?"
He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her closer. "You'll never have to find out."
I have 7 scenes left to finish for Electric Boogaloo; I'm currently writing a scene covering the last day of school, tentatively titled The Last Wednesday Studio. I'm going to remove one sentence for being too spoilery, but otherwise, here's where I'm at:
Recounting Flynn’s date carried them through the rest of the lunch line—Julie got the cup of baby carrots and ranch along with her pizza, so now her meal was totally healthy!—and to their usual table.
After the first person came up asking for a yearbook signature, Julie got her own book out to have it ready, since it felt awkward to her to sign someone’s book and not ask for a signature in return. Which meant her book was now crowded with kind-of generic messages from students she didn’t know very well, or at all in some cases, but that was fine—she’d gotten Flynn, Kayla, and Nick to sign right after she’d picked it up so she wasn’t worried about saving room for more meaningful messages. And maybe she’d actually be willing to look at this yearbook again someday, unlike last year’s, which was filled with well-wishes for her mom that now made her cry.
Her nervousness grew as the lunch period wound down, and she thought that she should’ve skipped the pizza—the grease wasn’t sitting well in her stomach.
“You OK?” Flynn asked.
“Just nervous.”
“About Wednesday Studio?” Flynn rolled her eyes. “OK, A, this is the smallest audience you’ve played to in a while, or will play to, and B, everyone loves you, and C, even if they didn’t, who cares? It’s the last day of school! I’m pretty sure our grades are already turned in at this point. Personally, I can’t wait to hear this new song.”
She remembered telling Carrie she should sings songs that reflected what she was actually feeling, and mentally shook her head at her former self. All well and good to suggest that for Carrie, but not so great when it came to baring her own soul.
Uh, tagging @1mnobodywhoareyou, @caswellseyes, @60sec400, and maybe also @junebugclaremontdiaz and @onward--upward since I've seen stuff you've posted and was like, "Well, apparently I'm about to get sucked into reading RWRB fic!"
“How’re we doing on money?” Will asked. “We don’t have much, just about… Six bucks?” Cecil guessed. “Good thing we got snacks while we still could. That’s not nearly enough for a full tank, much less any more food.” Will sighed. “Ok, well… What’s our plan if we run out of gas?” Will asked. “I dunno, Will. I didn’t think that far ahead.” Leo admitted. “At least this thing’s fast.”
Will looked down at Nico, not asleep but not entirely awake either. His temp was going down thanks to the Tylenol, but things still weren’t looking good. Will was mentally going over everything he’d need once he got to the infirmary; Painkillers, antibiotics, fluids, an oxygen mask, a proper cast for his broken arm, and weeks of bed rest, maybe months. He may need physical therapy after that, definitely talk therapy. And the extent of damage from the assault was still yet to be determined.
“I can probably take care of gas,” Lou Ellen said. Will wasn’t sure what her train of thought was, but he figured it was probably better not to ask. They’d all be metaphorically dead tomorrow anyway, might as well keep piling on the problems. Nico wheezed a cough, grabbing Will’s attention again. Nico’s lungs didn’t sound fantastic, even without proper listening equipment. Will was sure that Nico’s broken ribs were bothering him, but all they could really do for that was just try and keep him from moving around too much. All Will could offer him right now was pop to try and soothe the cough. “You want something to drink?” Will asked. Nico turned his head away from Will, which was likely a no. Will hoped Nico wasn’t starting to get delirious from fever.
Will’s own hip was throbbing from the sitting position, and with the added weight of Nico on his lap, but he wouldn’t dare move Nico. Once they got back to camp, he’d likely need his own brace for his leg, at least to help stabilize it. There weren’t any gifted healers in the Apollo cabin at the moment besides himself, though Austin and Kayla would no doubt help if he asked. Luckily no one else was hurt besides himself and Nico.
S2: E6 "No Exit"
Brought to you by I'M SORRY I KEEP FORGETTING TO POST THESE. HERE YOU GO
This episode featuring: Misogynistic tropes, Family Guy, the daddy issues continue, and Robert Smirke's 14 Fears
Silas: YAY
Kayla: hello queers and sam winchester
Compilation of Dean's dumbassery in the beginning, we love to see it
Ominous flickering lights! Great start
EWWWW GOOP
Hell is RIGHT baby bc its probably a demon or something
Oh boy mom and daughter fight
WHDHDHDHDHDHSH
Poor passerby family walking in on that
Yeah and you're young and blonde and therefore likely to get eaten by this thing, which I'm sure is the point
Melon: Oh to be born as a disposable horror movie character
ECTOPLASM
STATEPUFF MARSHMALLOW MAN EHDHDHD
WHSHSGSGSGS JUST WALKS UP TO HIM LIKE HI THIS IS MY BOYFRIEND AND DEAN'S LIKE uhhhhhhhhhhh ookay
Whshsgs yeah her moms not an idiot
Shes thinking abt stabbing u with it Dean
LOOK I GET THERE'S LIKE AN ISSUE WITH SEXISM BUT SHES SO STUPID
HAND
Anyways as I was saying its like "definitely a sexist character archetype" but also she really is stupid
Dean gonna get his hand bit or somethin just putting it in a vent w/a spirit
EWWW SCALP
Oh look another random blonde girl
Did they not check to see if there were any other blonde chicks in the building when investigating
DEAN WHY ARE YOU SLEEPING LIKE THAT??
He was fucking sleeping like that
Tumblr media
Ah yes the tragic backstory bc of her dad dying
Ofc
Dude honey he has daddy issues out the wazoo this isn't something you want to be asking probably
Melon: Wait is she asking Dean for parent advice
Me: Asking what yhe first thing he thought of when he remembered his dad
Melon: MAAM
Me: Dean saying it was shooting bottles on a fence I Feel Like Thats A Lie
Melon: Ma’am this man exudes daddy issues in a 6 km radius at all times you really shouldn’t ask him anything about his dad
Melon: Does this look like the face of someone who was hugged as a child? No? Cause he wasn’t
Melon: Pretty sure any answer he gives could be a lie cause like I’m pretty sure the entirety of everything he’s ever done with his dad flashes simultaneously every time he remembers him.
[ Melon appreciates the humor of using an acronym and then adding the rest of the statement. ]
Sam and Dean looking like dumbasses with their fuckin. Metal detector?
Into the sewers without delay we can't go wrong we know the waaaay
That ladder is pretty sketchy
What a creep
Ok scared him off for a sec
Dean army man crawling in a stupid little sewer
[ Melon notes that he's always felt showing someone crawling through a dark tunnel on their stomach is, in his opinion, one of the scariest things to be utilized in horror. I think there's a lot of merit in this; you can't go very fast, and you can't turn around, so if something else is in there with you... It occurs to me, that while we've warned away Melon from TMA for Prentiss reasons, I should show them MAG15. ]
WOO SPIRIT SHOOTIN
Eugg... bones...... the corpse of one of the victims
Well thats creepy as shit
Salt circled him
[ Crepe makes a reference to a Tumblr post about salt in hoola-hoops, instead of salt circles. I'm sure one of you guys could dig it up. ]
CONCRETE TRUCK LMAOOO DEAN WHERED YOU GET THAT
WHSHSHS THE AWKWARD SILENCDean stfu
LMAO
Well thats rough
[ More discussion comtinues on useful and hilarious solutions to demons and ghosts, such as holy water squirt gun, holy water humidifier, and salt infused hairspray flamethrower. ]
Like father like sons oh ma'am
Oh boy
AHAHA.
I mean I get being upset but also its stupid as hell
You can't blame someone for what their parent did thats fucking stupid
I mean I get being concerned that some traits carry over but this soecific behavior is stupid!
[ At some point around here, the episode ended. I, however, was hung up and DEEPLY offended by Jo's behavior at the very end. ]
Me: THE SINS OF THE FATHER ARE NOT THE SINS OF THE SON. BANGS HAND ON DOOR. DO YOU HEAR ME.
Melon: *cough* unfortunately pretty sure john could find a way to pass on his sins or smthn. Dudes done some weird shit
[ I rant about it a bit more. I'm so deeply, deeply offended. Then, a pivot into discussion about the monster of this ep. ]
Me: Anyways absolutely wild that the monster this ep was an irl serial killer
Me: Same energy as Robert Smirke being in the Magnus Archives
Kayla: ROBERT SMIRKE WAS REAL?
[ Needless to say, the conversation was immediately sidetracked. ]
Crepe: What did he do
Melon:
Tumblr media
Kayla: BUILT STUFF AND ITS EVIL???
Me: WELL NOT IN REAL LIFE
Kayla: WHAT
Kayla: IS THAT A US GOV BUILDING
Kayla: HE DID BUILD REAL EVIL INK YOU LIAR
Kayla: THATS THE HIGHEST EVIL???
Me: Ok I can't argue with that actually
[ There's some more prattling about this, but I'll mainly leave you with this last thing. ]
Kayla: the us govt isnt its own fear?
Me: No that would be giving it too much credit
---
Well, needless to say, I can't say I'm a fan of Jo at this point. It's a bit frustrating, because it's very clear (to me anyways) that her characterization is the result of some annoying tropes. I can get behind the idea of her wanting to be like her father, and maybe being a bit reckless, but the treatment of her is just... idk. Really frustrating.
I probably would have been a lot more sympathetic if it weren't for that weird turn around at the end. I understand Helen seeing John in the brothers and having issues with that, but Jo? After surviving all that with them? I can understand feeling conflicted, but the way it was presented... hrgh. Irritating all around.
At least this episode had concrete truck. Keeping in theme with the TMA references, Adelard Deckard would be proud.
Hi, I'm emotional 🥺 they are going to be missed
Not a word had been exchanged between you and Mason since that night he left you in bed. Not a call or a text. Nothing. No sign of life from him at all and the longer it went on the more your heart broke. THIS HURT A LOT
‘Fine’ she laughed. ‘We were hoping to make it a pizza making party, like do something a little different? Bens just got the new oven installed and wants to try it out’ she explained. I WANT TO GO TOO
‘Oh the usuals, Dec, Lauren, Woody, Kayla’ she listed off and the omission of a certain someone’s name made you relax. ‘Bens also got a friend from home here and possibly a couple of the Chelsea boys might come. Oh and Mason too, he’s free that weekend’ OPS
It was all still there, the pretty flowers and little cakes, the heart with gwens face in but what really made you melt was the detail on the bottom you missed. His initials, MM, in a little heart and you had to bite your bottom lip to hold your emotions in. THIS KILLED ME
You managed to hold it together but as the days became closer to seeing him you could feel yourself freaking out. You decided to throw yourself into work and the night before you distracted yourself by making all the dough for the next day. Making way more than you needed to but it seemed to be your coping mechanism for the night so you didn’t think about looking back into his brown eyes again. THATS ME
WE DONT LIKE TAHT GIRL
You heard his voice before you turned to give him a once over and you hated the way your tummy sunk at the sight of him. The last time you’d seen him he was abandoning you in your bed as he made it clear you were nothing more than someone he wanted to fuck for the week. Now he was just Mason again and you weren’t sure you’d be able to differentiate between the two. OH MY LITTLE GIRL
Him wrapping his arms around her waist as she buried her face his neck and you had to turn away before you burst into tears. MASON....
‘Ladies, how are we?’ Mason smirked, leaning over to give Carly a quick kiss on the cheek before looking down at you. ‘You alright?’ HE IS ACTING LIKE THE FUNNY ONE
‘You too’ you whispered. Not sure how good it was to see him right now and his standoffishness was making your heart shatter. I FEEL SO BAD FOR HER
You could see Mason out of the corner of your eye, standing with Kenny as they chatted just the two of them and you wondered why he never came to join you until Carly called you into the kitchen and they finally joined everyone else. Realising you must have been the reason he didn't want to sit with everyone and you felt your eyes sting. I'M HATING HIM
‘Sorry we haven’t spoken much lately, I’ve just had a lot on’ he told you quietly and you knew it was the worst excuse in the world from him. The way he didn’t care enough to be honest with you made you feel sick and you had no idea how to respond YEAH....OF COURSE MOUNT
‘Mase?’ Ben suddenly called, head popping into the kitchen and his eyes lit up at the sight of him. ‘Ahh there you are. We’re playing Pictionary and Kenny needs a partner. You coming?’ BEN 😒
‘Well yours looks way better than mine’ he huffed and you sent him a small smile. ‘Are we okay?’ He asked carefully, his voice small and scared almost and when you finally made eye contact with him you saw how sad he looked. NO MASON YOU'RE NOT OK
You were being miserable and you knew you were and you knew you had to snap out of it. You were the one who caught feelings, clearly he hadn’t so this was a you issue and if you didn’t fix up you were risking ruining the whole friendship group. OH NO HE HAS TOO, HE IS JIST STUPID
You felt lighter as you made your way back in, stopping in the kitchen to cut your pizza up and as if by magic Mason appeared. Walking over to the fridge to grab a drink before standing opposite you. HE IS FOLLOWING HER MOVEMENTS 😂
‘Oh yeah? What do you think’ you asked, showing it to him proudly with a wide smile and your sudden change of demeanour had him looking at you bewildered but he soon mirrored your expression and smiled back at you widely. THEY ARE TEO BIPOLAR PEOPLE, THEY ARE MEANT FOR EACH OTHER
‘Please? I’ll never finish it all. I want you to have some’ you told him, placing your hand on his arm and his eyes flashed to where you were touching him before looking at you with a soft smile. SHE IS ACTING TO CUTE
You ignored it though until you couldn’t, watching them discuss the pizza on his plate before she picked up the slice you’d given him from yours and take a massive bite from it. WE DONT LIKE THAT AT ALL
‘I don’t wanna cause a fuss, I’ll just go it’s fine’ you told her with a weak smile. ‘It’s been a long day and I just don’t feel great’ OH BABY
‘Oh Mason didn't tell you?’ She asked, brows raising in shock like she couldn’t believe you didn’t know but you could tell she was about to take some satisfaction in filling you in. ‘I was meant to go with him originally but like a week before I had a really important job come up and I had to back out. I told Mason to find someone else to take and he mentioned you guys were friends. You know what Masons like he probably didn’t want to say anything and upset you’ FUCK OFF KENNY, THANK YOU
You could barely focus as you drove home. Feeling even more used now that you knew you were his back up. Probably only sleeping with you as you were all he had to choose from and you felt even dirtier than before. OMG IM SAD
‘Mason, what do you want?’ You asked with furrowed brows and you knew you looked pissed from the way he was looking back at you. THERE HE IS
‘Where’s Kenny’ you questioned, eyebrow raised but he looked even more confused at this. I LOVE HER
‘Are you gonna tell me what’s really wrong? Cause you look fine’ he told you and you felt your anger rise up in your throat. TRY TO UNDERSTAND ALONE
‘Well it has. Look I know things have been a little weird since Portugal but I’m only here for a few days and I…’ WEIRD....
‘I miss you’ he whispered. You heart breaking at the sound of his voice but you knew you had to stay firm. ‘Things aren’t the same as they used to be. What happened to the contract? Friendship comes first and all that shit? You can barely look at me now’ he told you, unable to hide the hurt in his voice but you were too upset to let it affect you. ‘Last time we spoke at Ben's things seemed better and now you’ve gone all cold again’ YEAH, CAUSE KENNY DECIDED TO RUIN IT
‘Cause I fucking like you, you idiot!’ you suddenly exploded, silencing him immediately as he stared at you in shock and you knew you needed to take it down a peg. ‘I like you’ you told him, your voice sounding vulnerable and small as your eyes fell to the floor. ‘I know about the contract and I remember the rules but I like you. And I’ve been trying to make it stop but I can’t and then you shared my pizza that I gave you with some random girl I’ve never seen before right in front of me’ SHE FINALLY SAID IT🥺
‘It’s just pizza, Muffin’ he said quietly, trying to hide the smile on his face but you saw it clear as day. NOT MUFFIN NOW MASON
‘A friend of Bens from back home. I didn’t meet her that long ago but he introduced us cause she lives in Manchester now’ he explained and you hated the fact she lived so close to him. WE DONT LIKE THE FACT THAT SHE LIVES IN MANCHESTER
‘First of all, that’s bullshit. It was always meant for you and I’ve got the texts to prove it’ he told you, reaching for his phone to prove his point but you felt a little silly now. GOOD MOUNT GIVE ME THE TEXT
‘Muffin, who are we trying to kid?’ He asked you softly, your eyes on his face immediately and the soft look on his face made your knees weak. OMG OK
‘When you said you liked me, did you mean it?’ He questioned, wanting an answer but you weren’t ready to speak so you just nodded, hoping that would be enough for him. ‘Well, I like you too. A lot in fact, more than I ever intended to. And I know it’s against the rules but fuck all that’ he laughed. ‘Why are we fighting so hard against what we want?’ WOOOOOO
‘I didn’t say any of that stuff cause I believed it’ he sighed. ‘You don’t know how many times that night I came back to your door ready to knock it down and tell you how I was feeling. Why do you think I left that night like I was going out of my mind and I was crying like a baby’ he laughed but your heart broke at the sound of his confession. ‘I was so caught up in you and then reality hit that I probably can’t give you what you want. What you deserve’ THIS HONESTLY KILLED ME
‘You’re this big scary boss lady who’s got so much going for her, you know? Like you’ve got your whole little empire and that’s your world. I thought being with me would be too much for you or something. I’m so far away now and I can’t give you the time you deserve. Maybe I’m not making that much sense’ MISS INDEPENDENCE
‘What if I want you in the way?’ You asked and he looked up at you hopefully. SHE WANTS HIM ON TGE WAY
‘You did’ you laughed, nodding your head as you moved your hands to his shoulders. ‘But you said everyone’s got time, you just have to make it. And you Mason, I’d be more than willing to make time for you’ SCREAMINGGGG
‘I know, I was trying to run away I think. I knew I pushed it too far that night before and we broke all the rules but I was past the point of caring. All I wanted was to wake up next to you that morning, kiss you and tell you how I really felt. But you’d gone and then I saw you in the pool with Chilly and it drove me mad’ SILLY BOY
HHEHEHEHHEHE THE GIRL HE SPOKE TO WAS DRUNK SO NO DRAMA GUYSSSS
‘You don’t have to thank me, all I care about is you being okay and I get it didn’t seem like that sometimes’ he sighed. ‘That whole day I knew it was gonna be my last with you and I was miserable. Didn’t wanna do anything or speak to anyone, like once I was over my strop that morning I just wanted to hold you cause I knew I wouldn’t be allowed to the next day. I was terrified of talking to you about anything cause I knew I’d get upset so I just didn’t and then when we went out I thought if I wasn’t around you then I could push it all down and move on and maybe by the time we saw each other again it’d be alright but as soon as I saw you earlier I knew I’d messed up. I don't think I can be just friends with you now Muffin, it’s not gonna work. Not when I know I want so much more from you’ IM SO EMOTIONAL
THE LITTLE KISS/LIPS BRUSHINGGGG
‘You gonna let me be your muffin man, then?’ He joked, referencing the fact he always asked if you had found your Mr. Muffin but little did he know he’d been your muffin man all along. PF YOU ALWAYS HAVE BEEN
‘Well I realised pretty quickly you’d gone but I didn’t know what to do so I waited until Woody asked and when Carly said you didn’t feel well I knew something was off’ he shrugged. ‘You were fine before we ate so I went into another room to try and call you but Dec found me before I got a chance and when I told him what I was doing he gave me a bit of a talking to’ he gulped, his face going as red as you’d ever seen it and you weren’t sure if you wanted to hear anymore. ‘Don’t be upset with him but he told me about when you spoke after I’d left. I don't think he told me everything but I got the main parts and I felt like such a knob. He told me he’d bang our heads together if I didn’t come over and make things right so I left and I guess he thinks if we’ve worked it out then it’s all down to him’ OHHHHHH🥺
‘Of course, had me hooked since that first chocolate muffin’ he confessed. ‘I like you a lot and I didn’t want you to think I’m like what everyone else sees me as. I love having you in my life and I love having you as a friend but lately I couldn’t help but see you as more’ he told you truthfully. ‘And then you showed up at my birthday looking hot as hell like you’re enough to drive anyone insane’ he teased and his words made you giggle as you tried to hide your face in your hands. I'M NO MORE MAD AT HIMMMM, I LOVE HIM AGAINNNN
‘We can still be friends’ he told you softly. Kissing your cheek gently before smiling down at you. ‘Well just be extra special friends who kiss and get to see each other naked’ he teased and you rolled your eyes playfully. ‘Plus now you're my girl you get a prime face time slot’ YAYYYYY FACE TIME SLOT FINALLYTT
‘Of course not, but just like my best friend figured it out I think yours has too. Probably knew before we knew ourselves. Remember when we were at the airport and you made your big entrance?’ He teased, making you hide your face in embarrassment but he was quick to pull your hands apart. ‘She came over to speak to me, mainly just to say thank you for the surprise but she asked me if something was going on between us as she knew you always keep your cards close to your chest’ I'M GIGGLING
‘Of course, I don’t wanna go back there without you’ he whispered and you knew you didn’t want to leave him either. ‘I promise I’ll get you room service in the morning’ he laughed, trying to convince you further but you were already wanting to free yourself from his grip so you could grab your things. SCREAMINGGGG
‘Thank you, Muffin. I’ve honestly been miserable without you and I’m really glad we get to start again’ he told you truthfully. Your eyes stinging as you nodded back at him softly before he kissed your forehead. ‘We’ll do it the right way this time, yeah? No more secrets or ground rules or whatever else. We’ll just be honest with each other about our feelings and we’ll go from there okay?’ OH YESSSS
Chapter 1 / Part 2
Pairing: Rafe cameron x OC / JJ maybank x OC /JJ maybank x sister!reader
Warnings: swearing, alcohol, drugs, typical obx stuff; (remind me if I forget something)
Summary: Skyla is JJ's older sister. Growing up together they were inseparable. A short while after going to school she met her best friend Kayla. She would convince Kay to join her and the pogues. But Skyla would be strongly invested to make her dream of going to art school come true, that she didn't notice her best friend totally falling for her brother. On the road to her dream she accidentally crosses paths with the Kook prince himself. Maybe he's not that bad after all?
Word count: 2.8K
AN: This is part two of the series also it's a bit longer than the first ~
(shot back to the pogues)
When I arrived at the chateau, Kayla and JJ were already there. I got off the motorcycle which my brother was lending me whenever he didn't use it.
“Yo Skizzle perfect timing!”, JJ was shouting over the music which was bumping in the background. Making my way over to them I laughed “For what?”. Kayla turned down the volume a bit, getting a sad face from my brother.
“We were debating where we should start the fireworks this year”, she told me cheerfully. I wanted to punch myself for forgetting my friends wanted to put on a whole party for ourselves. I guess working made me much more forgetful than I was already.
“Well.. about that”, I started, but was interrupted by John B and the others arriving.
 “Heeey who's ready for fourth of july party, pogue style?”, John B exclaimed while handling a crate of beer. Kiara and Pope brought some party decorations and lights. JJ ran towards John B to take the crate “Let me handle my babys”. “You could've take some off of me you know?”, Kie sighed.
I went over to Kiara helping her with the boxes of decoration. “Thanks, I've always known you're the helpful sibling”, she laughed as she handed me a box. As everyone excitedly talked about the party I was wondering to myself how I should tell them that I yet again forgot something important.
A little panic rose inside of me. “Skyla?”.
I looked up, nearly dropping one of the boxes on the porch. “Y.. yeah?”, I stammered. Pope smiled at me “I asked if you're done with work for today or are you joining again later on? ”
I gulped as I carefully placed the box with the fairy lights down. “Uhm.. about that.. I was trying to say earlier that..”,my hands were so sweaty that I could've used them to water some plants. Finally I pulled myself together as I said “I won't be coming”.
 Pope looked at me a little worried, saying calmly “Why? I mean are you ok?”. Pressing my lips together I shaked my head yes. But before I could give further explanation I heard my brother shouting “What!?”. He came over to the porch leaving the others by the oak tree who were hanging the lights and decorations. “What do you mean you ain't coming Sky?”, he nervously laughed furrowing his brows.
I don't mean to upset them but I'm pretty sure I will. Wiping my hands off my shorts I tried to tell them as calmly as I could “I was invited to a party today and accidentally said yes.. because I forgot we had something planned .. “.
My brother looked at me in disbelief “Which party?”. “At the island club.. Nina asked me.. “, but he interrupted me with angry shouting and furious running his hands through his hair. “What the hell Sky? The fancy Kook Club!?”, JJ was really not happy about that.
Pope tried to calm him down, though he wasn't too bumped eater with my decision. “Calm down bro, it's just a party”, he said.
“To be fair I didn't think too much of it either”, I mumbled, shuffling with my feet, kicking away a stone. My brother let out an angry breathy laugh “That's the thing Sky you don't think too much about anything”.
Wow ok that hurt, my brother sure knew how to get on my nerves. “What is your damn problem!?”, I screamed, looking at him hurt. Now I noticed everyone looking at us and I felt a wave of anxiety washing over me.
JJ glanced at me, his face getting more red from the anger building up inside him. “What my problem is!? Because you apparently don't give a shit about us and rather go to a fucking kook party”, he yelled at me.
Kayla was now looking at me sad “Is that true?”. I bit down on my lip too hard making it bleed a little. “No of course I give a shit about you guys, I just… forgot”, I said, quivering, trying not to break out in tears.
I know I tend to mess things up a lot, run’s in the family I guess. But I really cared about my friends. Sometimes my head gets too clouded and I'm losing focus on what is important and what can wait.
Pope still tried to calm the situation a little bit “Guys just chill for a sec ok? Everybody's on edge and yeah, it's not cool that Sky forgot, but are we really fighting over a stupid party?”.
JJ exhaled sharp, rubbing his forehead. “Do what you want, I'm out”, he stated walking away.
“Where are you going?”, Kiara and John B. said at the same time as they watched my brother get on his motorcycle. He didn't even bother to put on a helmet and shouted “I need to cool down”.
 As I watched him start the engine I just couldn't hold back anymore and yelled after him “When you're coming back, I'm gone so you don't have to put up with me anymore”. With that we both left in different directions.
I went home just to grab some fresh clothes and some other stuff for the party. As I finished packing I rang up Nina asking her if I could come by her place before the party started. She happily invited me to join her pre-party-makeover-season, so I took the next bus to her place.
When I arrived at her place she opened the door already a little tipsy. “Heeey come in! I soo need your opinion on what to wear”, she laughed and shoved me inside.
Nina lived with her family near the figure 8 district, so her house wasn't too shabby. In fact it was really nice. We went up to her room, where it looked like a hurricane of clothes striked earlier. “Whoa ok, I see now what you mean”, I chuckled, investigating the pile of fancy dresses.
“Yeah right, I tend to get too nervous and keep picking out one after the other”, she giggled making a little snorting noise while inhaling. So I helped her pick out the ‘perfect outfit’ and got dressed myself.
 I didn't bother dressing up too much, I just put on some black pants with old skool vans , a pastel yellow crop top and some cardigan for when it's getting a little chilly. Fully dressed and a little bit tipsy we made our way to the island club.
“Oh look how beautiful they decorated everything “, Nina beamed, as she took my hand to get us faster to the entrance. For me it was mostly red and blue everywhere.
We made our way through the entrance and got us some seats at the bar. Nina said that she wanted to pay us some drinks and I didn't had a problem with that. Waiting for our cocktails to arrive, I looked around investigating the scene. Mostly tourists and rich people were gathered at the club.
Now having the drinks in our hands we decided to look a little around. Until we found some of Nina’s fancy pants acquaintances and she sweet talked me to sit with them.
A few drinks and painful lame conversations later I excused myself and went in the direction of the toilet rooms. But as I was out of sight I straight headed for the pier down the beach.
I really needed a break from all this and to be honest sometimes an excuse just to get drunk and have some time for myself. Looking around to be sure that nobody was watching me and out of sight I sat down the pier and rolled myself a joint.
 I know JJ wouldn't mind me smoking but I still wanted to give him the ‘good older sister’ vibe most times. “That prick”, I murmured to myself, taking a hit. I still was hoping that we figured out our dispute afterwards.
 I was so focused on my thoughts that I didn't hear someone coming up behind me. “Hey uh, you have some paper's? “. I slightly jumped at the sudden voice and turned around. “I uhm.. maybe”, stammering, I looked at the person and was surprised who it really was. “Rafe Cameron?”, exhaling some smoke, I glanced at him a little disbelieving.
 He looked at me furrowing his brows “Yeah and you're… oh wait you're the blondie from the club”. He smiled and sat next to me on the pier.
“Well you could say that, name’s Skyla actually”, I snickered and offered him some of my joint after I made sure he wouldn't snitch on me. But I heard from different people that they saw the Kook prince smoking several times.
He grinned and took it out of my hands. Inhaling some smoke he looked at me saying “Well it's nice to officially meet you Skyla”.
 “I bet that”, I chuckled, because of the whole situation right now and maybe the drugs. Me sitting with a Kook on the pier whilst smoking some weed was never something I had imagined.
Rafe looked at me and I noticed he had some really stunning blue eyes. “You're totally different right now”, he stated, focusing his gaze on me as he gave back the joint.
“Well I'm not at work”, I chuckled and took another hit.
He looked as he silently was determining something to himself.
“Suits you much better”, he then said and I found myself a little blushing.
Why was I getting flustered? Maybe the drinks really have gotten to my head I thought. Or maybe it was really nice having a somewhat normal conversation with a guy. With a Kook. Other than that I wasn’t fond of the whole label stuff. Why did it matter how much, or less money someone had? I mean yeah, we got into trouble a lot but Kooks too, they just had the money or higher privilege to buy the police and anyone off.
As we silently sat at the pier I shyly glanced over to the boy. He wasn’t too bad looking either. Suddenly fireworks were blazing into the sky and lit up the beach. It was so cliche but yet so beautiful to me.
I couldn’t not think of my brother and friends right now. Maybe I should have paid more attention to their feelings. That I would notice that this day was important to them. Not just a stupid party. After all, a few years ago, shortly before the fourth of July, I introduced Kayla to the group and we had a welcoming party for her simultaneously.
 I sighed loudly holding my knees up to my chest. Rafe noticed and looked at me questioningly. “You’re alright?”, he asked, gazing at me with his piercing blue eyes.
 At first I wasn’t aware that I nervously bit my lip, but soon it got to my attention, because Rafe was glancing at my lips for a second. Hurringly looking down at the water I stammered “Yeah, no, I’m fine…I just tend to mess things up”.
 He looked a little confused at me but soon after smiled softly to himself. “Me too...you can tell me if you want”, he calmly said and flicked the end of the joint into the water in front of us.
I wasn’t entirely sure if I should tell a person which I just met about my dumb habits. But at the same time it felt right to talk to him. “I just..had a fight with my brother earlier because I ditched him and my friends for this party”, I told him, pressing my lips together.
Another firework came up flashing a bright red light, Rafe slightly squinting his eyes. “Well fuck them, you’re your own person. You can do whatever you want”, he grinned at me.
 Cute smile, I thought. Catching myself staring at him a little, I looked up at the sky and said “Yeah, but this day is important to them..to us”. At least I thought it was. After all, I was becoming more distant from everybody.And mostly occupied by smoking pot and getting drunk.
 But I didn’t want to become like my dad, a drunk asshole who hits his kids and doesn’t care about anything.
Before I could ponder any deeper, Rafe gave me a soft nudge with his shoulder and said “I’m sure you’ll make it up to them”. Now I was chuckling. He is really cute. Geez did I just think that Rafe Cameron is cute?
Adjusting my hair a little, I tried to hide my upcoming blush. I watched him considering something silently. “We..I mean I’m hosting a party at my place next weekend if you’d like to come?”, he asked, looking at me with his cute smile.
 Normally I would decline an invitation from a guy I just met, but I’m pretty sure the weed just killed the last responsible brain cell in me so I just said “Sure, sounds fun”. Rafe grinned triumphant as he took out his phone. “You wanna exchange numbers..so you know”, he hesitated. I gave him a flashing smile as I took out my own phone “No of course”.
As we exchanged numbers I heard my heart bumping in my chest. The last time I was this nervous was when JJ got injured while falling off the stupid tree in front of the chateau. He braced his ankle really badly and had to wear a cast for two weeks. But being JJ he took it off earlier to go surfing and as I found out I made Kayla watch him for the rest of the week. As I said he just behaves better when she’s around, I don’t know why.
Just as we were finished adding our numbers into the phones, we heard someone shouting Rafe’s name from behind. Looking back I saw Topper and Kelce standing on the beach.
“I..better be going now, I told them I was just searching for some pape’s an hour ago”, Rafe leaned in on me chuckling.
 As he was just inches away from me I picked up a hint of his cologne with a slight mix of weed. Another firework exploded, shading his face blue. I surely didn’t notice at work, but his lips looked really kissable.
 I snapped out of my trance as I heard Kelce shouting and lightly hitting Topper. “I’m heading back too, bet my friend who I came here with is worried about me sick”, I said, as we both stood up.
 We walked up the pier, stopping a few feet away from Topper and Kelce who were waiting on Rafe to get back. Rafe stood with both hands in his pockets, looking a little nervous at me.
“Thanks for...for the joint and stuff”,he smiled. “No problem, thanks for the company”, I grinned as I fumbled with my phone. “Yo Rafe! You coming or what!?”, Topper screamed a little annoyed. “I’m coming! Geez..”, he laughed.
 As I looked at him for the last time, I noticed he had slight dimples forming when he laughs. “Well, see ya at the party?”, he asked hopefully. “For sure”, I smiled. “Great and..don’t ditch on me Blondie”, he laughed as he ran up to his friends. “I won't!”, I shouted after him.
 Grinning to myself I watched them leave. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I made different decisions. Like if I said no to Nina, staying with my friends. Would I still someday smoke pot with a Kook on a pier?
 I couldn’t stop myself from smiling but soon got woken up from my dream by looking at my phone. “Shit!”, I exclaimed, my phone blew up with ten messages and seven calls from Nina. And also a text from JJ.
“Hey you’re alright?” “You’re taking a long time in there just saying..” “This isn’t funny Sky!” “Where are you!?”.
Oh gosh I need to get to Nina fast or she might call the police or some shit. Looking up all the messages I read my brother’s too.
“Yo Sis, sorry I freaked out, let’s talk ok?”. I couldn’t be mad at him for long, after all we need to stick together. I sent him a text that I’ll be coming home soon, so he knows we could talk there.
 Dialling Nina's number I made sure I didn’t sound too slurry.
She picked up instantly, sounding totally panicky. “Sky! What the hell, where are you?”, she asked. “I’m at the beach, everythings alright”, I assured her. “I was so worried some weirdo took you or some shit!”, she shouted into the speaker.
 I apologised to her, making my way back to the party. We decided to call it a night and Nina ordered for an uber to drive us home.
THE WEEK IS OVER!!!
I'm finally done! I have had a perpetual headache since yesterday, and I feel slightly like throwing up (but in a relieved tired sobbing happy way, if that's possible).
Which means I have time to write something! Yay!
Okay, I have another thingy of Klance as parents. This was inspired entirely by my band teacher. He told us to "Not let the notes/rhythms catch us off guard like a deer in the headlights, because what happens to deer in headlights?" And everyone immediately went, "They get run over!" But of course I said, "They get smooshed! Like a pancake! Pancake deer!" And the guy 1 seat over from me (my semi-friend, but that's not important) said, "Damn, that was dark," to our other friend and they both proceeded to stare at me like I'm a madwoman. (Haha jokes on them, who ever said I'm not crazy. It would only raise their concern levels if they knew that I'm writing something about this now.)
Ok, sorry. That was longer than I thought it would be. I'll stop talking about my life and let you move on with yours.
Their daughter is a 6 year old kindergartener, and she is genetically related to them and therefore looks like them. (Don't ask me how that works, Blue and purple-eyed female Lance with A Keith-ish personality is unbelievably cute to me.)
Yes, she is part Galra, though that's not really important.
Wow, the intro is probably gonna be longer that the actual writing.
------------------------------
You might think that Lance is the dad that worries constantly over his child, the one who spoils her rotten.
But, nope. Keith, after having been a lonely kid, and having a lack of parental figures in his life, (The only reason he is a functioning human being is thanks to Shiro) HATES the thought of his daughter being lonely or feeling unwanted by anyone. He's felt that way too often over the years.
So when it's Kayla's first day of kindergarten, his protective dad levels go through the roof.
"Alright, my Rose. Remember what I told you. No matter what, do not be a deer in the headlights. Because what happens to deer in headlights?"
As loving as Kay is, she inherited her Daddy's impatience and fiery temper. She can only take to much of her Dads' worrying before it gets tiring.
"They get mushed into pancakes, I know, Daddy. We've gone over this 5 thousand times."
Keith blames Kay's sassiness on Lance.
Speak (Thought?) of the devil, Lance walks into the room at that moment. He starts to back out at the annoyed look on Keith's face.
"Oh. no you don't. Get over here and help me tell our daughter how bad it would be if she turned into a deer pancake!"
Lance rolls his eyes.
"Ugh, Keith. The poor girls brains will ooze out of her eyes if you don't stop. You've been going on about this for ages."
Yep, the sass is definitely all Lance's fault. Kayla giggles at thought of her brain liquifying. (In her mind, it would be electric blue and if it got in her mouth, it would taste like blue raspberry.)
Keith starts to argue, but his husband shoos him out with his shoe.
Do NOT get in the way of a McClain with a shoe in hand.
Once Keith is gone, Lance turns to Kayla.
"Don't worry him, baby. He's just being proud in his own way."
They both hug before Lance finishes packing Kay's lunch.
Before Lance goes to call Keith back into the room, he crouches down to her height.
He holds up a small pink bejeweled bottle.
"But just in case, you know how to use pepper spray. Don't you DARE get kidnapped. Me and your Daddy have already fought a war, all we ask is that you let us stay peacefully retired."
Kayla giggles. "Okay, Papi"
Keith breaks down sobbing when they drive Kayla to her school.
Lance just shakes his head and pats his husband's back. Keith is so going to deny this tomorrow.
----------------
OH MY GOODNESS. I was just spellchecked for writing "kindergarden!" Is that seriously not how you spell it?!?!? I've been writing it that way my whole life! Also raspberries! I thought it was Razberries or Rasberries. That is so weird. This is just proof that I would wither away and die without spellcheck.
I have officially decided that the only thing that I can call their child is 'Kayla Rosa McClain.' She's bisexual, though she leans more towards the lesbian side. She calls Lance Papi, and Keith Appa (the Korean version of 'dad') or Daddy. I'm not sure how the last name works, though. In my head, she decides when she's older which last name she likes better or uses both with a hyphen. With Keith, he either hyphenates it or uses McClain.
This song makes me happy:
Go listen to AJR. They'll make you smile.
And this too:
