Cats of the Sun

The SunClans are four clans making up the whole that is SunClan, each clan fulfilling a different role in serving SunClan.

DawnClan

DawnClan are the healers. While every clan has its medicine cat, they are trained and evaluated in DawnClan, with the DawnClan medicine cats being the most respected and skilled of all medicine cats.

DawnClan does have its warriors still, though they know more basic healing than the warriors of all other clans. They live by the sea, which provides them with an abundance of food, and the cats of DawnClan are known as laid-back and trustworthy. Though, less favorable cats of other clans think of DawnClan as lazy and unwilling to do the "hard work" of clan life.

DayClan

DayClan are the peacekeepers. They are opposed to fighting, and instead do everything in their power to end conflict bloodlessly. DayClan trains and holds the best mediators, and are the most welcoming to outsiders.

DayClan, like all clans, has its warriors, some very skilled, but they prefer to keep their claws sheathed whenever they can. They live in the plains, enjoying its warmth and peace, which is fitting for how many cats would choose to describe DayClan. This does have the downside of many cats thinking of DayClan as weak, and sometimes even a danger to SunClan's way of life due to their willingness to take in outsiders.

DuskClan

DuskClan are the protectors. They defend the clans from outside threats, enforce the warrior code, and punish those who have committed crimes against the clans.

Their warriors are incredibly skilled and disciplined, believing themselves to be the strength of SunClan. Their forest home gives them a mastery of climbing and stealth, you can never truly know when a DuskClan cat is watching you. DuskClan cats are known for being fiercely loyal and always reliable, but some think they take advantage of their reputation, and their "protection" can border on the cruel.

NightClan

NightClan are the guardians of StarClan. They live amongst the spirits of their ancestors and pass on the history and stories of times long since passed.

Their warriors are wise and calm, some thinking of their roles less as warriors and more as walking stories. NightClan lives in the caves deep within the mountains, among towering crystals, said to be windows into StarClan. hey, katy! a question for you: what do you think happens to uranus, neptune, and saturn during the 30th century?

we know that the inner guardians are protecting neo-queen serenity and king endymion while pluto watches over the space-time door

i think it's general fanon that saturn will assist chibi moon and the asteroid guardians, but uranus and neptune seem to be shrouded in mystery, and it's something i've been curious about for a long time

Honestly, I think that Neptune and Uranus will still uphold their duties as protectors of the outer solar system, but I highly doubt Usagi will follow in Queen Serenity's footsteps by having them stationed so far away all the time. I imagine them as honorary aunts to Chibiusa and backup protectors of Crystal Tokyo while still occasionally visiting the outer solar system and running maintenance checks.

But maybe instead of guardians of the royal family and Crystal Tokyo proper like the Inners are, they act as peacekeepers and guardians for the rest of Earth? Haruka and Michiru like doing their own thing and being independent. I can definitely see them traveling around instead of staying in one place.

more random observations

hey, it's me :-) I haven't had time to make the detailed posts I want to, so here are some things I've been noticing in my studies lately

sun in the 7th house/sun opposite ascendant is a dangerous placement for someone to have, as you might risk becoming overly dependent on your relationship status/your partner and co-dependent dynamics. you discover yourself through relationships, but always remember that the knowledge remains even when your partner is gone and you'll always have yourself.

neptune in the 8th people have no boundaries. point blank. it might even be something you're not aware of, but people can easily take advantage of your energy and suck the life out of you. please analyze your relationship dynamics more closely.

sun conjunct north node people usually have a big ego since they know they're on this planet for a reason, there's no "oh why was I born" shit. the danger is leaning completely into the sign they're in and ignoring your south node completely. balance is power.

being a capricorn moon, i have a famous love for my fellow saturn-ruled aquarius moons, but the closer i get the more i see how different we are. repressing my feelings is a conscious thing for me; i know i'm an emotional wreck but people do not, and i'm always mistaken for a stone-cold bitch (not something I try to change though). aquarius moons, though... you guys project such a friendly/open (not exactly warm or intimate) exterior and people often mistake you as more emotional than you really are. you try to rationalize emotions rather than feel them, as inwardly, unlike me, you're pretty detached and cool.

moon-pluto (conj/square/opposite) aspects please seek therapy to help you deal with all of that, i'm begging you. living is better than just surviving.

moon conjunct/trine mars have a terrible time saying sorry because they always feel right about whatever they do, good or bad. they might know they're on the wrong, but they somehow rationalize their actions and align it with their emotions.

moon opposite chiron is a bottomless pit of need. there's an empty feeling you don't think will ever be filled. that's because your emotional wounds/traumas are extremely slow to heal and you can't ignore it, so you end up focusing on it the wrong way. make that extra effort to be vulnerable, please, it'll all work out.

ascendant conj lilith/lilith in the 1st people are extremely self-conscious; you might be obsessed w your looks or attitude. this aspect gives you a magnetic energy which attracts all kinds of people, some who are bad for you. don't run away from this or your sexuality; it's a part of you. just be careful.

having a conversation with a scorpio mercury is like "wait... i just vented for 2h and learned nothing about them". you're not the person who interrupts your friends just to say "i know, because when that happened to ME," and we love it, but we also want to know how you feel.

i love the ability people with mercury in the 7th have to always stay detached in relationships and think them through (or at least you think you can).

virgo venuses/venus in the 6th, there's nothing wrong with you. you deserve just as every bit of happiness and kindness as everyone else. you don't have to be lesser than your partner or to have them just tolerating you. i know me saying this won't mean shit but you need someone who will tell you this while looking into your eyes, and if you don't: fuck them.

wherever your sun is placed is where you are most likely to seek affirmation of your own personality/feel most like yourself: sun in 11th might only feel seen when they’re being seen by their friends: in the 7th that might only happen with their partner; in the 4th, they might only feel real at home; in the 10th when at work or being seen by the public, etc.

libras will always have that ultimate need for peace/no conflict even if it’s a single placement, it’s always there. the problem is that they put themselves in situations there’ll be inevitable disagreements and so they’ll be the ones to smooth things over and look like the peacekeepers/manipulators. i have a libra friend with an aries moon so she’ll always need a little conflict to feel safe, but whenever we call her out for it she’s like “me?? but i would never do that, i just want us all to get along!” and it just makes her look bad.

scorpio venuses are so secretive even about their crushes and likes, i mean… they love talking about sex/kinks in general terms, but when you ask their own experiences it’s literally crickets. i understand there’s a lot of trauma in that area, but you guys won’t heal until you let others in.

virgo mars are unbelievably controlling, to a level that shocked even me, a virgo sun. you guys need to let some things go, please, there’s no way you can control everything happening around you or be prepared for everything.

❤️‍🔥 i’ve been seeing many people mention that virgos/virgo placements have a thing for making people feel horrible about their appearances and as a virgo raised by a virgo i have to chime in. it’s true. it’s sooo fuckin true it hurts. i even recognized that the way my mother would judge what people wore or how they looked was starting to bleed into my way of viewing the world. not only that, but i can’t remember a single day when she didn’t make a comment on what i looked like- and i mean every day. some were better than others, but it was extremely difficult hearing my mom say these things to me, especially when she thought she was being helpful. as a self-conscious, self-restricted, and insecure saturn in 1st baby trying to grow up, the things she said heavily contributed to my depression and body dysmorphia. it’s a daily battle but being aware and correcting the judgements i make of myself and others, and staying consciously open-minded, has helped A TON. virgos can be cut throat and their tongues are sharp as knives. there are ones that use those tongues for good and others for bad, and sometimes their intention is good, but the delivery can be severe in the most subtle of ways. but virgos are not the only ones who will tear your confidence to shreds! my libra sun granny is the most judgmental yet the least judgmental person i’ve ever known and it’s so infuriating??? (she deserves her own post tbh) also i had a cancer friend who’d literally never let me have a moment of peace if i wore something around her that she didn’t like, but she was just toxic as a whole 🤣 but yeah that’s my two cents, there are a lot of virgo placement people who are so terribly judgmental but there are plenty of gems out there who are working on their shit or have gotten it together! but psa, and i don’t care what your sun sign is, you never have the right to make someone else feel like shit for the way they look. and if you feel as though you do, there is a very special circle in hell for you ol’ buddy xoxo

Venus-neptune because neptune angers me

Venus-neptune interwines the themes of venus: love affection, romance and self-esteem with neptune's: creativity, dreams, illusions and boundaries. I see the people with these aspects a little like the typical libra/pisces venus, social, charming, and a bit oblivious in romance.

Anything neptune touches breaks down its walls, it becomes like goop, the boundaries are gone. It also brings a lot of creativity and a dreamy nature to the mix.

So with venus-neptune, one's self-esteem, relationships and beauty are tied to mysticism, creativity and well, lack of boundaries.

Right off the bat, creativity > limits. These people are very creative, usually excel in arts, film, and music. If not, they have a very very powerful imagination :D

They are good at manifesting!

These aspects can also make someone very generous too. Neptune is a generational planet, and tied to venus, it creates this sense of desire to be one with others (am exaggerating but you get the drill-)

Venus-neptune makes love a little confusing, but as in it might be hard for them to pinpoint their feelings in relationships.

Uhm, dreamy? I know, again with venus-neptune and their aura, but it's true. Most of the time (depending on other aspects too), their energy is out of this world. Even if they aren't the most physically attractive people, they're definitely the ones with some of the best vibes.

Can be, you know, prone to delusions in relationships, more common with harsh aspects. They can be prone to idealise other people, especially the ones they admire or are close to. F. e: Aries venus sextile aquarius neptune. They're energetic in love, and Aries venus doesn't make them put themselves before others (not necessarily in a selfish way, Aries is a very individual sign), but sextile neptune, they can become susceptible. It calms Aries down, but also clouds it a little.

Could be a little impractical with money.

Venus conjunct neptune smashes the two planets together. Creativity is through the roof and there is great potential for artistic skills. Very generous and is likely to give second chances a lot, which can lead to unfair relationships. They may avoid conflict because they value peace, and then escape into their fantasy world when things go wrong. They can have a hard time separating the self from others especially since venus is a planet that deals with people. (I don't mean this as hate, neptune aspects simply do that, and I am no better, sun square neptune got me :,/)

Venus trine neptune is a harmonious aspect. These people are very giving and attractive, high talents with this one too. Compassionate and romantic, they may find themselves in many relationships, people are drawn to them because of their peacekeeping nature, however this may lead to difficulties as well. The trine can be easily taken advantage of, so the person may end up not putting much effort into harnessing their talents from time to time.

Venus sextile neptune as an easy aspect as well. The sextile is less apparent than the trine but it's still there. Venus sextile neptune is kind with a big heart. They may be easily fooled like outer venus-neptune aspects too (depends on the rest of the chart of course).

Venus square neptune is a harsh aspect. I think this one is the most difficult, even more so than the opposition. I read somewhere that squares are internal conflict, and oppositions are external conflict. So, with the square, love, romance and self-esteem are in a turbulent relationship with dreams, illusions and creativity. These people are super imaginative, altho they could experience creative blocks too. They could feel like they're constantly being lied to, or that they aren't seeing things clearly in their social lives. They may also be too giving or idealise romance or peopleand, others could take advantage of them because of that. The key here is compromise. They have to learn to be more realistic in relationships for their own good.

Venus opposite neptune is another harsh aspect. Love, affection, romance and self-esteem are at odds against illusions, creativity and dreams. I am sensing a lot of creative blocks here, or conflict whether they should go with one idea or the other. Alth these people have a strong imagination. They can often find themselves at a crossroad, venus' love or Neptune's illusions and dreamy claws. This can make them indecisive in this area, like all opposition aspects do. They may lead towards one planet and neglect the other. The way to deal with this is take the middle road and find balance between these two options.

As an end note, neptune aspects aren't the end of the world, just like pluto aspects and Saturn aspects. They're something we need to learn to see through neptune for our own good. Once we have done that, the placement becomes like a river of generosity, creativity and wiseness.

Couples' Synopsis 🗯: Brett (yes her name is Brett) is a more liberal pop-chic, glamour, outgoing type of woman. Ryan is conservative, country music, outdoorsy, camo hunter, introverted guy. So far up to episode 11, they arent really into each other but they get along okay. You can tell that there isnt much of a spark, yet they still participate in activites. First day of the wedding, they were like oil and water as Brett felt uncomfortable with Ryan's lifestyle and views as she grew up in a more socially relaxed upbringing. Ryan is more quiet and soft spoken so although he peeps things he doesn't say much. Brett leads most of their activities together and although she is aware of their differences she's modest and optimistic about it. They dont argue theyve just sorta accepted how different they are and casually press on. They look more like coworkers that dont talk much. Ryan has gone on to say that he doesnt feel a connection with Brett and so he doesnt put in much effort toward the relationship. I created a poll amongst fans asking if they think Ryan's lack of connection is valid OR should he try more to make it work as Brett does? The results were 55% with 75 participants leaning towards them just not being a good fit. I agree in that regard.

Below is an example I give for basic synastry clients. One thing astrology doesnt account for is having a connection, as 2 people can be completely incompatible yet still crave each other in a love/lust way. Ive also seen couples that had highly compatible charts but they werent interested in each other. However, despite lacking a natural bond, theyre more likely to come to appreciate one another over time due to how naturally smooth things are. Synastry is more for analyzing the differences in 2 persons' behaviors and personality, as well as how they interact with each other. Youre able to see where you disconnect and where you have similarities. I do them for couples, family members, and best friends.

🌞 Sun - Leo * Scorpio

Represents what each person takes pride in and is the core of their personality. They are incompatible here because they view life and take pride in very different things. Their Suns also create a square aspect which intensifies how polar they are. Leo Suns are more extroverted and take pride in the joys of life, creativity, romance, independence, and things that encourage spontaneity and challenge. Although they may be able to trigger each other in the mood by way of Venus, Capricorn mars prefers more slow and steady lovemaking, while Librans like things more fast paced and fun in the bedroom. When it comes to aspects traditionally I would break down them all, but when first looking at someone's chart in a basic synastry standpoint, I analyze longevity factors first. They could attempt to work through these problems but for a lack of connection on Ryan's end, hes less likely to try to make it work. Brett is at least open to it but having different lifestyles and alternative desires for a relationship will make it hard to move forward. This is why having a mutual connection is so important in a relationship because both partners at least have that glue to try and make differences work. The only thing theyve got going for each other is the ability to understand each other's emotions and have a good time. But when examining aspects, Ryan still views Brett as overly sensitive and not disciplined in her reactions. Even if they did press on with their relationship, they may still find it dull, just based on the lack of fun aspects in their synastry chart.

Aw. Ok that poses a interesting question. With so many different personalities how does everyone get along in general? Best buds vs can barely stand each other being in the same room (if any).

Ok house dynamics owo

Sans pretty much is neutral with everyone. Other then with his bro probably gets on with Red most, jokes and trips to Grillby's ya know. Second would be Pluto, they talk a lot of space and science. And the third best he gets along with is Stretch, they chill together doing nothing on the couch sometimes. Axe does make him a little uneasy for... Reasons...

Papyrus gets on really well with everyone, basically everyone's mom friend, really enjoys the morning jogs with the energetic gang. Gets on super well with Crooks is one of the few that visit their cottage. Enjoys time with Jupiter.

Red gets on well with Sans. Sometimes Black, Rus, Pyre and Stretch. He and Edge have a love-hate relationship, they bicker often but they are good brothers. He has trouble handling Blue and Papyrus' energy. Red really doesn't get on with Axe, but he's doing better.

Edge and Black either get on really well or clash it's unpredictable and depends on what side of the bed either woke up on. Pyre reminds him of his brother this can be good or bad. He gets on we'll with Papyrus though. Kinda hates Stretch's guts but in a how can you be so annoying way. Doesn't mind Blue or Jupiter's company. Is iffy about the horror two mostly cuz his bro has a problem with them but also want to be friends with Crooks but feels like he can't because of Red.

Blue loves and gets on with everyone. Is getting to know Red's and Edges limits when it comes to his boundless energy. Is BFFs with Pluto, likes Jupiter, adores Papyrus as a little brother. See's Rus as a bro too. Will be friends with anyone who lets him ramble on and on and on. Is friends with Axe and likes spending time with Crooks, is another who visits them, and does so more then Papyrus. Is the peacekeeper most of the time, but knows when to stay outta things.

Stretch feels a tad off with his 'cousins'. He enjoys time with Rus, he gets on with Sans really well, and Papyrus he has trouble peopling he mostly keeps to himself unless he's chilling with Sans, causing mischief or annoying Edge.

Black sometimes is best friends with Edge or mortal enemies for no reason, they are a little too similar. He sometimes gets on with Red, Thinks Sans is too lazy so finds it hard to get on with him. Likes Papyrus. Doesn't mind Axe or Crooks. Gets along with Jupiter. Gets along with his bro but can be a tad like a helicopter mom, they sometimes bicker but he has his bros interests at heart.

Rus gets on with Stretch, Red and Blue. He looks to his brother for safety and reasurance. On occasion he gets on ok with Edge. He can be a bit of an anxious recluse tho. Pyre likes to stir and mess things up for Rus just because he can, but even then can still get on with Red, he hates Blues 'understanding' and kindness, starts fights with Edge. He has a love hate relationship with his bro, like a "Hey only I can call my bro a pompous jerk/ass." Kinda love.

Axe knows he puts some of the boiz off, but he really likes Blue, he doesn't feel judged by him. Him and his bro have an unbreakable bond. Likes to get Red a little riled up but we're sorting their relationship out so he's doing that less.

Crooks wants to be friends with everyone but realises not everyone can see past the past. He can't stand the look he catches Sans giving him and sees the conflict from Edge. He spends time Papyrus and gets on with Blue and loves their visits, he bakes them treats and shows off progress on the farm, they sometimes like to help and enjoy joining him on the odd farmers market trip.

Pluto likes everyone. He adores Blue they are the troublesome two. He missed him a lot on his travels and sent lots of postcards. He will pretty much spend time with any of the others.

Jupiter, (I don't fully know Jupiter yet... But) He gets very well with Papyrus, Edge, Blue, Sans and Crooks. I can see him doing puzzles with Papyrus, Blue, Crooks and maybe even Edge.

Mercury in Libra: Diplomacy & Poise

Mercury enters the sign of Libra on September 5th and will leave on September 27th. This is a transit that will have us practicing the Diplomatic values of the sign. Recon Three (A draft of a short story about a space orc)

“Recon three, approaching target. Going comms-quiet.”

“Understood, Three Preeminent. Good hunting.”

Captain Sallys slid the communicator back into its pocket in her armor, folded seamlessly against her serpentine body. Behind her, Bo checked her mag rifle with a nervous tic.

Yualith rebellions were nothing new in the cosmos--the fractious insectoid folk had dealt with internal struggles since well before their starfaring days--but humans in the Orion Peacekeeping Alliance were an entirely novel matter.

Bo, for her part, felt absolutely out of place. Back in the Solar Defense Force, she’d been a highly decorated marine: a master marksman, a dauntless survivalist, and an uncanny tactical wit. It was why she was chosen among the first five hundred to take part in her home arm’s united security front.

For her part, though, she might as well have been fresh out of boot.

This world, for starters, was nothing like home. She’d rooted out contraband enclaves on the cold canyons of Pluto, led formations on the dusty plains of Mars, and run dozens of drills under the hellish heat and pressure of Venus.

Gios, though? It was surreal to her.

Monolithic vegetation akin to fungus dominated the landscape, undergrown by lichens so rigid they scraped the paint from her shin plates. Sporeclouds stirred each time the wind blew and cut visibility to a few tens of meters. Even her life support system, for all it could do to filter out a wisp of breathable oxygen, left an acrid taste of ammonia in her throat.

She had no idea what tactical superiority even looked like in a place like this. After five years as a fire team leader and three as a platoon commander, it felt bizarre to her to be entirely beholden to the combat sense of another. Sallys had proven a reliable leader in training and a’ship, but this would be the first time Bo had ever followed her into a combat zone.

She trusted, as much as someone one knows only through their records can, her team leader. Regardless, she couldn’t shake the feeling of fighting blind.

Then there was the unit in which she found herself.

Captain Sallys, foremost, was of a serpent-like people called the Ixori. Their agility and marksmanship were unparalleled in the cosmos, and she’d seen twice as much combat in the last few years than Bo had in a lifetime.

Second in command was Warden Iommo. He stood barely a meter tall, yet had the aspect of a chameleon: incredible situational awareness, and skin that melded into the vivid colors of the landscape. He wore no camouflage--just a translucent ballistic vest and the kit on his back.

On point was Peacekeeper Abrox--a Gorolai whose resilience in battle was without peer. They were bipedal, manually dexterous, and of a meter and a half’s height, much like a human; yet, they could see and hear well past the spectra of homo sapiens. They further differed in their amber exoskeleton, upon which they nailed their battle plate like an old-age shoe upon a horse. Bo asked them once if it hurt; in return Abrox asked, “have you ever gotten a tattoo?”

Just behind him marched Peacekeeper Ojore, a Taelic. An tripedal fellow with leathery skin of a dozen brilliant hues, he carried an enormous recoilless rifle--not to mention the team’s allotment of explosive charges. His hands were as large as Bo’s head, yet when priming a detonator, they moved with a surgeon’s grace. For this mission he had daubed himself in deep fungal-brown pigment, giving him the image of an alpha predator in the shadows. (Bo, of course, knew him to volunteer in children’s creches and sing in the OPA All-Faiths Choir whenever ashore--but the foe didn’t need to know that.)

Then there was Mender Hali--a Kastarine. Bo had never cared for cockroaches, and though she was hardly proud of her prejudice, it didn’t sit well with her that a being who so resembles one was her medic. If he cared to stretch his limbs and lean upright, he would stand near to her chest--yet like most of his kind he scurried along the ground, his rigid digits quite comfortable on the unwelcoming terrain. 

And last, there was Bo. Peacekeeper Lashawna Boudicca. A mere human in a galaxy of fantastic creatures. She stood near two meters tall, a hundred kilos of muscle and grit, yet in the company she now kept she felt as feeble and clumsy as a suckling child. For all two decades of training did for her, Abrox could still lift her with gear and all single-handedly. Hali could outrun her with a sprained pedipalp--she’d seen him do it. Iommo could scale a ten meter climb before she’d so much as made her second step.

But here she was, marching into a fungal grove the likes of which she’d never seen, their designated marksman. These five put their faith in her covering fire, their lives in her aim.

She might have lost herself in her doubts, but the team’s march was cut short. Sallys raised a spindly hand and signaled them down low.

In the clearing ahead stood a blood-brood of Yualithi--a dozen razor-clawed beings each clad in the colors of the Gios rebellion. Most bore gas-actuated assault weapons with cruel-looking bayonets.

If the wind were to turn, or the sporeclouds dissipate for even a few moments, team three would be exposed and assailed in an instant. Mercifully, however, whatever orders the brood were waiting on came; they filed out in bored succession.

“Remember,” said Iommo in a hushed breath, “we’re not here for a firefight. We find that depot from the orbital scans, we drop a multiwave beacon for the artillery battalion, and we get the hell out.”

“I don’t think anyone has forgotten, Warden” said Sallys. He shot her a glance which she met immediately, and after a few stern moments, she signaled the team to carry on.

“I hope we don’t find a fight” said Ojore as they marched. “It would be so nice to have a peaceful operation for once.” He shrugged his weapon further back against its strap, apprehensive of it even still.

“Peaceful,” said Abrox with their best impression of human “air quotes.” “We have an objective. Anything between it and us is as good as forfeit.”

“Still,” added Hali, “it would be nice not to return covered in viscera. You lot have an awful way of staining my good uniforms.” He gave a chittering laugh, and Abrox along with him. The grimace on Ojore’s face was rather like Bo’s.

“Quiet, all of you” said Iommo with a hiss. “Our orders are to engage responsively, and that is all to say on the matter.” As soon as he turned his eyes back to the horizon, Bo saw Sallys’ tail-tip twitch in a circle--a gesture she’d learned was much like rolling one’s eyes.

Kilometers of alien vegetation passed beneath foot, tail, and claw, led with certainty by Abrox’s keen senses. They could see further through the sporish haze by naked eye than any targeting sensor--and they seemed just the slightest bit perturbed that the rest of the team fought to match their pace.

At last, silhouetted against the glow of the sky, their target came into view. Iommo leapt to the top of one a towering fungal spires to train an omniscope on the target. “It’s a match to the gamma signature from the scans,” he said. “Enough ammunition and fuel rods to supply this rebellion for weeks longer. Captain, shall we being our app--”

Without warning, Iommo’s perch burst out from underneath him. A hail of mass-reactive shells rained from the flank, and he plummeted toward the ground. “INCOMING FIRE!” cried Ojore as he reached out to catch his Warden. Sallys slapped Abrox’s shoulder as she advanced ahead. “Weapons hot, get to that hill line! Defilade, now!”

Iommo locked eyes with Ojore for a moment: first in bewilderment, then quickly-swallowed fear, then in burning displeasure. He laid his superior down on his feet with an awkward gentleness, and refrained from the urge to pat him on the head. Another volley pulped the vegetation that concealed them, and they put aside their differences to dive for cover.

Bo brought up her targeting sensors, following the tracers from Abrox’s assault-mag. Her first shot went wild into the alien flora. “No, dammit” she said to herself, “fire discipline.” She choked down the surge of adrenaline that followed the break of battle. Hali could smell it on her--he gave her a sideyed glare as he drew his sidearm.

An absurdity of humanity. One of the most dangerous combat drugs known to science--and humans simply dripped with the stuff when you so much as startled them. How they managed to form a single coherent thought in the throes of it was beyond him. Bo raised her head up again and, this time, ventured a longer look at her target. Three Yualithi on an emplaced weapon at four hundred meters; another nine barreling down upon them fifty meters closer. “They spent their surprise too early!” she said. “Targets at three-fifty and closing.”

“Then deal with them!” answered Iommo as he hunkered into cover, his carbine quite useless at such range. Bo’s training flashed through her mind. Prioritize: their heavy weapons were too far out to be accurate, but held them under suppression. Objectivize: clear the air for her allies before the foes closed on them. Actualize: …” She squeezed the trigger and sent a mag-driven bolt directly into the field gun’s frame. Its crew ducked for cover for a moment before resuming their barrage, and the stream of fire edged its way toward her. “Damn it all!” she swore, chambering the next cartridge. She’d only have time for one more shot, and there were three of the clackers to take down. “Mark that… whatever it is!” said Ojore as he drew his weapon. “Give me a bead, if you please!” “Trusting you here, Ojie!” she answered as she trained her sensors. She didn’t love the thought of shooting an enemy pointing high explosive armaments at her with an infrared dot instead of a mag-cartridge, but she knew he had the right idea. The gentle Taelic broke into a song of war as he hoisted his launcher high. “He’s really going to fire this one blind?” Bo thought as she steadied her barrel.

“Blood upon stone and ash upon coals…”

“I swear if you nip the canopy and frag us, I’m going to come back from the grave just to kick your a--”

Ojore’s weapon screamed and scorched the earth behind him to glass, his payload rockering skyward.

“Fear within hearts as the fire-wind blows…”

Bo held the lock as long as she could. Not until splinters of woody fungus rained onto her did she at last roll back into the cover of the hillside.

“Onward we march; to glory we rise…”

Ojore ducked beneath the fire that Bo drew and emerged just in time to guide his rocket himself to its destination. 

“Our lives we will gamble; our enemies die.”

The micro-atomic impact was nearly as deafening as the launch. Mass-reactive shells cooked off like the rolling of thunder, drowning out the screams of the weapon’s operators. “Good damn shot!” Bo said as she rolled over pat her comrade on the back.

“No time to celebrate,” Sallys interjected. “Troops closing fast; small arms, go!”

As Bo drew her sidearm and caught her breath, shame gutted her. She’d missed. She’d put her comrade in harm’s way because she’d been too panicked to make a single shot against a stationary target. She could almost hear her former sergeant scolding her from beyond the grave for her mistake. A rookie’s mistake. A fool’s mista--”

“Head in the battle, damn your glands!” cried Iommo, not content to let her sulk with foes bearing down.

He and Abrox, freed of their biggest threat, laid a fierce volley against the storming insectoids. Their entire exchange would bring down only a couple of foes, but it forced them into a covered approach and gave the fire team a valuable moment to prepare.

Ojore raced to load another rocket; by the time he could prime it, however, the target had drawn too close. Its safety sensors squacked at him in anger, and with a sigh, he shouldered it again. “So much for hoping, I suppose…” he said, as he reached instead for the enormous charges belted to his waist.

Bo had to admire his willingness to stick himself in harm’s way. The enemy’s scattered fire whizzed about him as he lobbed charge after charge over the crest of the hill. At last Sarrys flicked the safety on her own assault-mag. “Foe closing to ideal range; make your shots count!”

She wasted no time in leveling her fire. Two hard bursts--”That’s one for me,” she said proudly. “Two for me,” laughed Abrox as they swapped their magazine.
