Don't imagine ducking into the Last Drop about closing time to find it quiet and peaceful for once, the old jukebox still going softly

The oddly inviting scent of old wood, with the faint traces of alcohol, age, and a metallic tinge pulls you further in

Don't imagine looking to see Vander sprawled in a booth, arms across the seat back, his pipe sending wisps of smoke skyward and heavy brow crooked curiously

He rests easily yet powerfully, his posture both vulnerable and intimidating, like a lion or wolf surveying his territory

Those gorgeous steel-blue eyes, the ones you secretly adore, study and entrap you and you find yourself temporarily frozen

"'Aven't seen ya around in a while, love. What brings ya in tonight?"

Don't imagine his voice like honeyed bourbon, deep and smooth but burning through you and sending sparks flying up your spine

You stutter out an apology for coming in so late and whirl to leave but-

"Ey! Where ya goin'? I'm still open, it's pourin' out, and 'sides, I could use the company."

You thank him, trying not to stare as he braces his hands on his knees to stand, the thick muscles of his arms on display

He goes around behind the bar to grab a bottle and two glasses, then returns to the booth, and to your surprise gestures for you to join him

Time passes easily, too quickly as you treasure this, chatting and sipping the liquor, some sort of high-quality stuff, the kind that goes right to your veins

Those veins that are now on fire with how he's gazing at you

When did you two move so close?

Don't imagine him casually putting an arm around you to pull you in fully

"It's gettin' chilly. Why don't ya come 'ere?"

Definitely don't imagine him giving you a devious grin, or reaching out to gently grasp your chin, his large thumb swiping your bottom lip

You feel like you'll burst into flame at this point and you've never wanted something more than the promise those eyes held

"Ya know...I've always liked ya. Was kinda hopin' we'd get a chance like this..."

Don't imagine resting your hand on his face, your heart hammering like a wild thing as you silently all but beg him to do it

Don't imagine his lips meeting yours, that flame roaring to life and you inhale sharply

He tastes faintly of bitter tobacco and the sweet liquor and you've never had something so wonderfully intoxicating

Don't imagine tangling your fingers in his thick, surprisingly soft hair, involuntarily letting out a soft groan as his tongue swipes across yours

He pulls back, cradling your jaw with one hand while the other grasps your thigh, a downright devilish grin on his slightly flushed face

And definitely don't imagine him murmuring, "Well then...now that we're on the same page, where this goes t'night is up to you, darlin'..."

The new waitress startled back from the jukebox like she’d been stung, a ragged washcloth still in hand from where she’d been about to smudge it across the old wooden frame. 

“I told you not to go touching that thing.” Cassie scowled. “If you can’t do as you’re told then I’ll sure as hell fire you on your first night, I don’t care how much Della likes you.” 

“Sorry, I just thought-”

“You’re getting paid to clean, not to think.” said Cassie, ignoring the clear discomfort of the customer whose head was talking over in order to chew out the new girl. He wouldn’t leave before he’d had the meal he was meant to. They never did. “Now go and take out the trash before I decide to stop being so polite.” 

“New hire giving you trouble?” the customer said after the girl had scurried to back, leaving the relaxed reggae tones of Mama’s Love to undercut the sparse chatter of the midnight diner crowd.

“Steak with mashed potatoes and carrots on the side, right Ed?” Cassie said, ignoring his question.

“I hate carrots.” he said, shaking his head.

“They’re good for your eyes.” Cassie insisted.

“No carrots.”

Cassie shrugged, making a disparaging strike across her paper pad with her pencil before turning to walk back to the kitchen.

“Any possible way you could change the song?” he called after her.

“Thing’s broken, it plays whatever it wants.” Cassie shot back, flicking a hand over her shoulder as she entered the kitchen. 

“Slaughter in the pan, in a fog.” Cassie said, relaying the customer’s order to the cook in the most lackluster voice possible, heading over to the little stained mirror over the sink to prod absently at the mascara that had made its way under her eyes.

“How’s Dana working out?” Paul said, flashing his trademark sunny grin as he pulled out a fresh red steak to slap on the grill.

“She won’t last the night.” Cassie said dismissively.

“You always say that.”

“Mind your business, Paul.”

“You know I won’t.” he replied cheerily.

In a perfect world Cassie would have been able to take half a minute to prop up her sore feet in the back room, but just as she was starting to think about it there was a clattering sound from up front and the jarred tinkle of the front door’s bell.

She sighed, wearily making her back back through the swinging door to survey the damage, which seemed to amount to a fallen broom, a mildly concerned looking customer, and some rock song or another playing from the jukebox. 

“Not sure what happened.” Ed raised an eyebrow and shrugged. “Your girl was over by the music box thing and then ran out all of a sudden. Looked like she’d seen a ghost.” 

Well. so much for Miss Dana.

Against her better judgment Cassie went over to the old thing and peered through the glass.

Psycho Killer by One Bad Son read the disk that had just finished playing.

Cassie sighed, rolling her eyes.

She walked over to the window by the front door to tack the little laminated “help wanted” sign back up, and then turned around and got back to work.

There was a line that could not, no, absolutely would not be crossed if she could help it with her entire being. She'd cash in every favor she'd ever tucked away for a rainy day. Her father had connections all the way back home and her Frank, well, his work portfolio always allowed time to dedicated to his wife's sudden passions. Colleen was after all, an artist and quite given to her creative and Irish temperament. It was this very temperament that made her so protective of her best friend in the world. She never had the chance to have a sibling as her father, Reg Murphy had died suddenly back Home, as it was called. Minnie had never remarried, or rather taken up residence with another man since then so she was always Minnie MacKeen.

By some grace she's wandered downstairs and taken over cleaning duties. The entire place soon smelled of Country Garden cleaner and lemon furniture polish and she, well, she was stoned. Rueing over her feared reaction to Mackey's reaction to Helene's news she scrubbed the bar top until it shone. Moving on quickly to bar prep she took note of the garnish trays, sticky with red grenadine and finishing sugars.

'That won't fucking happen to Helene.'

Colleen vowed fiercely as she sliced lemons behind the bar at the tiny prep station. The entire time her knife snipped with cold efficiency as her father had showed her. She then moved on to peel garnishes with the same determination.

"There's my little aggressive garnish maker! Woah...what the hell did those lemons do to you, Colly?"

"I called Mackey to talk...I'm all over the place about how he's going to react and I swear to god Frank...if he tries anything with Helene I'll fucking kill him."

The way that his wide green eyed rosy cheeked wife said this with such cold determination scared Frank a bit. He remembered the mess with Benson and how her father's legal team 'cooperated fully' with the Sloughbridge PD.

"Frank Mackey's not Joel Benson. Frank Mackey's a scared scarred little boy who got dealt a shit hand in the father department. Joel Benson was a psycho piece of shit whose mother should have kept her legs closed. There's a difference. You of all people should see that."

"Touche, Flannery."

"Why not let me handle this and you can get started on...lunch? a sandwich sounds good about now."

"I've got a knife in my hands, pouring my worries out to you and you want food?! What the hell kinda man did your mother raise?"

"Ma raised four strapping Flannery men, thanks much."

"Your sister Mo doesn't count!"

"I'm tellin' her you said that!"

"No! No! Don't! She'll kill me. What kind of sandwich?"

"The Everything with Mac Salad."

"Fine."

"You ever think of just talking openly to Mackey? Make him a plate, settle him down with a drink and just talk. You can do that, Col."

"I'll think about it."

A fist pump from Frank Flannery as he went about cutting lemons. Score one for the peaceful approach.
