As we commemorate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, I renew attention to David Byrne's American Utopia. The central idea is that the world depends on our individual, inner transformation of mind and heart, which we cannot accomplish alone. I noticed that when comic writers make popular characters who are shown to be in traditionally straight relationships have gay relationships that they do it with their alternate universe version.

True, there’s been tons of subtext with Hal and Sinestro and Morrison takes that and has the anti matter versions of Sinestro and Hal be a couple. In Multiversity he also had Flashlight and Red Racer, who were the Earth 36 counterparts of Hal and Barry, be a couple but you know he changed their code names and names to Hank and Ray (even though it’s obviously them). He also made an alternate version of Ray Terrill gay in Mastermen but afterwards when Ray Terrill was reintroduced in the main universe he was gay.

Then there’s was Supermartian (an alternate version amalgam character of both Superman and Martian Manhunter) who was heavily implied to be in a relationship with a Lex Luthor who was also Batman.

At Marvel there was an alternate version of Hercules (who in the main universe has been bi for awhile) in a relationship with Howlett (alternate version of Wolverine). In Exiles we had an alternate version of Mary Jane Watson as Spider-Woman be in love with an alternate version of Mariko Yashida who was Sunfire. In Hickman’s Fantastic Four an alternate version of Johnny Storm (named Jack Richards) is married to Reed Richard.

There’s also the case where one of the characters have their sex and gender changed and the relationship becomes heterosexual one. Like in Shogun of Steel Bruce Wayne is a female Ninja named Hana who swears vengeance on Brainiac for murdering her family, she eventually falls in love with a man named Hoshi (who is that universe’s Superman). Or in Fantastic Four when Hickman had Reed peek at alternate universes to see what stopped the Civil War in those universes an in one Civil War came to a halt because Steve Rogers married Natasha Stark (an alternate version of Tony Stark).

We all know why it happens in alternate universes and not in the main universe (when it comes to A list and B list characters at least) and we all know you’re not going to see this stuff outside of comics either.

Today is Wednesday, June 10, 2020. There will not be a new episode of Unwell today. Following the example and the words of Black Lives Matter Chicago, we call for an end to the state violence against and criminalization of Black communities through police forces, an unjust legal system, and federal, state, and local political organizations.  

As the artists of HartLife NFP, we call on our fellow art makers in positions of institutional power and privilege to take concrete actions to make your institutions and artistic work explicitly and actively anti-racist.  

We affirm our commitment to do the same here. We will interrogate ourselves when we have fallen short of this goal and recommit to do better every time.  

The United States is a country founded on land stolen from indigenous peoples, built with the stolen labor and lives of enslaved Black people. We call especially on White listeners to reckon with this fact, today and every day.
