AUTHOR EXTRAORDINAIRE
'We all need to look into the dark side of our nature - that's where the energy is, the passion. People are afraid of that because it holds pieces of us we're busy denying.'
'I spent the first twenty years of my writing career preparing for the mystery genre, which is my favorite literary form.'
'I started writing seriously when I was 18, wrote my first novel when I was 22, and I've never stopped writing since.'
'I don't want to write formula. I don't want to crank these books out like sausages. Every book is different, which takes a hell of a lot of ingenuity on my part.'
'I focus on the writing and let the rest of the process take care of itself. I've learned to trust my own instincts and I've also learned to take risks.'
'Ideas are easy. It's the execution of ideas that really separates the sheep from the goats.'

[The title cover of I AM THE PRETTY THING THAT LIVES IN THE HOUSE - Osgood Perkins, Netflix]
[ « I wasn’t beautiful anymore. / Now I looked like what I was, a raw wound. » Janet Fitch, White Oleander]
[ID: a scene from ‘I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House’. Lily is sitting in a chair, her back to us. She’s talking into an old phone. She is sat at a table, facing a window. The room is dark. A small lamp is on the left, close to a chair hung upside down on the wall. The subtitles read, This is how you rot. End ID]
[« At least she is there, / I’d thought, even if she is just a ghost and doesn’t speak, / at least she is / there » Helen Oyeyemi, White is for Whitching]
[A scene from I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House. Most of the image is pitch black; the characters on the far right are faintly illuminated. Ms Blum has her eyes closed while Poppy’s ghost whispers in her ear, her left hand up to hide her mouth.]
[« Let me be clear: every version of the story / ends with you being slaughtered. » Tory Adkisson, Anectode of the Pig.]
[« ‘Ghosts don’t haunt us. That’s not how it works. They’re present among us because we won’t let go of them.’ / ‘I don’t believe in ghosts,’ I said, faintly. / ‘Some people can’t see the color red. That doesn’t mean it isn’t there,’ she replied. Sue Grafton, M is for Malice »

'A' is for Alibi
Finished reading (aloud, to my spouse) “‘A’ is for Alibi” by Sue Grafton.
This is the first in the 25 book long alphabet series featuring private investigator Kinsey Milhone. Kinsey is twice-divorced, lives in Santa Teresa (a fictionalized Santa Barbara, CA) does most of her work for an insurance company, and lives for her job.
Nikki Fife is about the same age, widowed, and newly on parole after eight years for having been convicted of murdering her husband. She hires Kinsey to find out who really killed her husband (a well-known and well-loathed divorce attorney who wasn’t above sleeping with his clients.)
Now that Kinsey is on the case, a second, possibly-related, murder from eight years ago has turned up. As Kinsey tries to figure out not just the who, but the why, she needs to be careful or she might end up dying for her job, as well.
It’s a quick, fast-paced read, with enough twists and turns that the final solution is satisfying. It is also very much a product of its time (the early ‘80s) and reading it was something like time travel to an earlier and simpler time. There were several “Oh, yeah, that’s how we used to live back then. Forty years ago. Oh god, I’m old.” moments that just made the story that much more interesting to me.
Recommended.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Kinsey is back at it, this time it’s right in her own neighborhood. Her landlord asks her to look into something for a neighbor who has recently passed away. His relatives want to bury him with military honors but are having issues with the paperwork so they ask Kinsey for help. She looks into and finds out quite a lot more than she ever…

TERFs out here saying you can't be a woman if you don't have a uterus. I didn't realize I was non-binary until my late 30s.
At 31 (family record), I had a full hysterectomy so I could function as a person. Do you have any idea how much pain you have to be in to be 31, no kids, and get your uterus removed?
It's a lot.
Anyway, I had a TERF tell me once (before I was identifying enby, so she was only mostly terrible) that, yes, she did see me as less of a woman because I had removed my womb.
Other than fuck TERFs (and radfems and tradfems, the world's worst appetizer platter, truly), I don't know that I had a point here.
Oh! Wait! It's been 10 years! 10 years without crushing pain and depression every fucking day because I could barely walk for two years due to said pain!
And some fuck said I was lesser for making my choice.
Fuck 'em. It ain't parts. It's you. You make yourself who you are, you got me? You.
