“Later we [Culture Club] played with them a few times and they had the most unique, hypnotic sound. It’s trashy Americana, John Waters, Divine, the Shangri-La’s, high camp and bubblegum punk. The beat is everything. Fred always reminded me of Dr Zachary Smith from Lost in Space. I never thought about whether the B-52’s had a gay angle. They were just against rules in general – taking classic American kitsch and giving it a punk, space-age irreverence, like a beautiful car crash with pop surrealism. For me, Pierson’s spine-tingling dissonant science fiction anti-harmonies with co-vocalist Cindy Wilson are one of the defining sounds of American New Wave music. Desumanos - s/t LP - Brazilian surf rock

Desumanos´ fresh mixture of guitar driven melodies is as evocative as it is playful. From their native Brazil, the band casts uncompromising surf scents on a handful of songs that also drop in the mix African rhythms, cumbia and lambada. This instrumental project is made up of a dream-team of producers and musicians: Kassin (bass), who was member of The +2´s and co-produced Gilles Peterson’s Brazilian project Sonzeira, and former Os Mutantes member Liminha (guitar), as well as Felipe and Manoel Cordeiro (guitar), one of the lambada originators, and Stephane San Juan (drums), currently playing with David Byrne.

—Movie soundtracks have a language of their own. Composers and musicians supply the allure to support the atmospherics of the script and the photography. The genre known as “spy movie music” conveys intrigue, secrets, living on the edge, cheeky humor, fighting against wickedness in high places, and saving the world from terrible fates. Whether it’s James Bond or vintage film noir, one can expect an exotic template of chords and orchestrations: Like the ironic zither of THE THIRD MAN, the Anglofied harpsichord bumpers in THE AVENGERS TV show, or the staccato cello in the BOURNE movies. “Spy movie music” is often dark but scintillating, detached but empathetic to the character, even if you’ve never been “a spy.”

Over the years I’ve drawn from the “spy movie music” template, with cross-overs into surf guitar rock, classical, jazz, psychedelia, techno, and world music. Every other song on this compilation is instrumental, so it flows like a soundtrack (or one of those old Eno records—you decide). Guest artists include Bret Alexander, John Bechdel, Bil Bryant, Davy Jones (Monkees), Dan Rielly, Ron Simasek, Felipe Torres, and Chris von Sneidern. Thanks for listening—and watch your back.
