anytime i'm subjected to a video of karlach talking about exactly what happened - ie gortrash selling her to zariel and just suddenly being forcibly shoved into avernus in a moment's notice it makes me want to cry out of cruelty, but more so because it was so cruel but karlach fought tooth and nail to retain the heart she also forcibly lost. she wanted her soul, she wanted her kindness, and she'll be DAMNED if she let that rat man and fallen devil take THAT from her when they took everything else. and what bothers me too is that she wants to ask gortrash why he did ... but she knows why he did it. he did it just for the money. that's it. she just wants to hear another reason. a better reason. something more solid.
something that makes more SENSE than just money.

DAY 2: FALL: Kanej
Unease is not a feeling Kaz Brekker likes to be associated with. He despises the feeling of relinquishing control, by even an ounce. He likes knowing the steps of everyone around him before they do themselves.
He should have know this trip was a bad idea to begin with.
Visiting Ravka with Inej, so she could see her family, and they could meet the man that returned her to them, was not supposed to be this stressful.
Inej must have explained to them in advance his discomfort with touch, her father and uncle shaking his hand (gloves on) was the only thing he had to suffer on his arrival. Practically off scot-free with a family so open and touching as hers.
He must have spent the first three days just getting used to watching the causal touching between them all. Flinching unexpectingly when they approached him was enough to set his nerves on edge for a week. Hugs between Inej and her cousins, helping hands between them all, the way her father holds her mother each night after dinner.
Unnerving to say the least to someone who is normally avoided by the people near him. But this isn't Ketterdam. Not even close.
In Ketterdam, Kaz doesn't have to worry about Inej. (Not conciously at least). She has her knives. Her skills. Her speed to protect her from the dangers of the twisted streets. Those and the knowledge possessed by the citizens of the Barrel that to harm the Bastard's Spider is a death sentence in and of itself.
Not mention that in Ketterdam, Kaz is not expected to actually watch Inej perform her supernatural acts of acrobatics.
An hour ago when Inej's youngest cousin, Miri, a girl with crooked pigtails and a crooked front tooth (it's loose, she explained) walked over and asked Inej to show her some tricks, Kaz didn't have any worries.
But now, watching the person cares about most, (read loves), scale a flimsy wire twenty feet from the ground with no net whatsoever, has him grinding his teeth and clenching the grip of his cane so hard its a wonder it doesn't snap off.
(Inej of course is perfectly at ease with no two qualms about it, but then again she's a professional.)
Kaz can't tear his eyes from her, the way she flips and hops and carries her weight full on her hands like there isn't an unflinching drop centimeters away. His nerves jarred by the cheering of her family below.
She's midway across, when she stumbles. It's a miniscule thing that most people wouldn't notice, but Kaz has been observing her years, even this far away he can see the flash of panic across her features.
He's on his feet before he can process the thought, determined to catch her before she hits, but a withered hand stops him.
He turns to unleash his wrath on whoever would attempt to keep him from Inej.
Kaz stills at the placid expression on the face on Inej's grandmother, Maarah.
His gaze flickers back, in time to watch Inej right herself and skip to the safety of the otherside.
"Aṣtepta. Wait. Watch."
Relief fills him in a way that makes him feel wake, he sits waiting for the dizziness to pass.
"I thought she was going fall."
Maarah passes her cloudy gaze over the young man, wilted before her. "And so she has."
