What the Wave?!

Today I went with my surfmigos, Rob and Chris, to our usual Del Mar, 11th street spot. We go there when the surf height is expected to be larger than 3-4 feet - it’s a reef break and will form more ride-able waves than the typical closeouts that happen at OB or Coronado on larger days. 

Surfline had predicted 3-5 foot waves today. HAH, they were wrong, so wrong. 

I knew the waves were big when we pulled up at 5:30am and I could see their shadows rolling in far in the distance. 

We made the hike across the train tracks, down the sketchy cliff “path” and to a patch of sand/smooth rock to stretch and (this time) mentally prepare for whatever was going to happen next. 

My friends didn’t have too tough a time paddling out as it seemed they were happily on the outside within 10 minutes while I was floundering in the turbulent, annoying-ass 50 foot long stretch of white-wash. It seemed that for every 10 feet I paddled out, I would get pulled back 8 feet by a broken wave. After about 20 minutes of this nonsense I looked behind me to realize I was no further out than when I started paddling, AND there was a dope sunrise peaking over the cliff that I was sure to miss if I kept the struggle going. And so I cried a little, took some deep breaths, and got back on the horse with determination to force my way across the ocean to my friends. 

One thing that happens out in the ocean, as I was well aware of during this session, is that every man is for himself. With every oncoming wave, you have to make a choice - either position yourself to catch the wave, or paddle-sprint the HECK over that wave. I was mostly doing the latter - that was enough of a challenge to deal with, and furthermore, I didn’t want to catch a wave only to spend another 30 minutes trying to paddle back to safety - (safety being on the outside). 

But let’s be honest, I can’t catch 7-8 foot waves... YET! The majority of these waves rolling through were overhead and then some. Even Rob, someone who has been surfing for 10 years, said afterwards that it was one of the biggest days he’s been out on. 

There was a particularly potent moment when, after paddling for a 4-5 footer and missing it, I looked back to see what seemed like a 10 foot face arching forward... and then another behind it. You have no choice but to paddle as fast as you can to “win the race.” It’s just you and a line of surfers all headed in the same direction, with the intention of surviving the wave. Some of the more experienced surfers would float further out in order to catch the monsters rolling through, but more often than not surfers today were pretty content to stay out of danger’s way. 

I’ve been home now for a few hours and I still can’t shake the complete awe that I felt in the ocean. I was able to see some incredibly huge waves, I was machine washed a few times, I paddled the HECK over massive mountains of waves, and I maintained composure and trusted my instincts to navigate the ocean. I didn’t catch anything today, but I did push the cap of what conditions I’m comfortable in... and maybe next time I’ll be riding those waves.

If you haven’t guessed already, this preserve is a favorite of ours. It has one of the most gorgeous expanse of Lake Ontario lakeshores. This is a great winter destination for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing.
